Em 1972, Maria Teresa Horta, Maria Isabel Barreno e Maria Velho da Costa publicaram o livro “Novas cartas portuguesas”. As autoras ficaram conhecidas por “três Marias” e o livro foi muito falado sem, contudo, ser lido, pois foi apreendido pela censura três dias após a sua publicação.

As autoras foram a julgamento em novembro de 1973, acusadas de atentado contra a moral pública  mas viriam a ser absolvidas a 7 de maio de 1974, ajudadas pelo 25 de Abril que trouxe, finalmente, a liberdade de expressão e o fim da censura.
