Speaker 1 (00:02):
Enter on The Pretty Smiling Morning Show. Here's what's going
on in the news.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
The trial for former sangam And County Deputy Sean Grayson
begins today. He's charged with first ree murder for the
twenty twenty four shooting death of Sonia Massey, a woman
who called nine one one because she thought someone was
outside her house. Prosecutors say Grayson ordered her to move
a pot of boiling water, then he shot her, killing

(00:30):
her in her own kitchen.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Grayson has a checkered background, including past misconduct complaints to
UI's and a military discharge. The trial was moved out
of Springfield because of concerns about finding an impartial jury
and that jury's makeup could be key in this high
profile trial. Now, the federal government shut down just hit
day twenty today, making it the third longest in modern

(00:55):
US history. So while DC is in total grid luck
with no end in sight, hundreds of thousands of federal
workers remain furloughed, and today the National Nuclear Security Administration
is set to furlough about fourteen hundred people, leaving only
four hundred on duty to guard the nukes. This is
the first time the agency's ever had to do this
since it was created back in two thousand. In other

(01:17):
national news, George Santos is back in the spotlight and
somehow out of prison. The disgraced former congressman says he's
grateful to Donald Trump for commuting his sentence.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
I'm very grateful to President Trump. Dana and I sit
here quite literally.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
I don't know how much more humbled I can get
before people believe I'm humble or remorseful.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
But I can just do the best in my actions
moving forward. So why might people not believe him?

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Well, he lied about everything, his job, his education, even
his family background. He stole donor identities, pocketed campaign cash
and used it to buy designer clothes and other luxury items.
He even pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft,
and then got booted from Congress and jailed at our
Investigators called his entire life a con Even Trump called

(02:04):
him a bit of a rugue. But he's loyal and
loyalty piece off with Trump. The President has used his
clemency powers to help a number of people who critics
say committed serious crimes, including political allies, reality TV stars,
and major frosters. Santo served just months of his seven
year term before Trump's clemency set him free. For info

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Now here's a look at sports Rocky, the sports genius
is in the building.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Oh yeah, show Lamb beadies a gentleman, man, looks. A
lot of football happened over the weekend. One particular game
in the NFL that everybody still talking about is the
Denver Broncos being down nineteen and nothing at the end
of the third quarter and scored thirty three points in
the fourth quarter alone to beat the Giants thirty three
to thirty two. That tied for the most points scored

(02:55):
in NFL history in one quarter. Big up to the
Dallas Cowboys. Man, they may hand the Washington Commanders like Cowboys.
Look good man, they got ceedee Lamb back like it
is what it is. Little sad news man. Former Tampa
Bay running back Doug Martin passed away on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
No info on the cause of death.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
So while man, we're gonna keep his family in prayer
and I find out what's going on and give your
guys updated on that situation. Two Monday night football games
tonight Tampa Bay and Detroit.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Oh, that's gonna be a dang baby.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
You know, my Lion's gonna pull it off in Houston
and Seattle quick. In my last story, we all know
that Lebron James and Stephen A. Smith do not like
each other. They have been going at it for some
time now. Steve and they sat down on a Pivot
podcast and revealed a little more insight about that entire situation.

Speaker 5 (03:46):
And I would tell you my feelings haven't changed. I
don't like him at all. He doesn't like me at all.
I don't like talking about him because I think people
think that I'm looking to talk about him like Lebron's
Inside of Stephen they said, if you don't ask me
about him, I won't talk about him. I'm gonna be professional.
This man is one, in my mind, the second greatest
player to have ever played the game of basketball. He's

(04:07):
a great ambassador for the game of basketball. He's an
incredible role model. What he has done with himself, what
he has done with his crew, it's beyond admirable. And
he will always warrant the utmost respect. I know the
things that you said behind my back. I know what
you tried to do to derail me from being in
the position that I'm in the day.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Oh it is so, there's more to the story.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
But hey man, it's a respectful thing of Okay, you
don't like me, I don't like you.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
We cool and you live your life. I'm gonna live
my life. Were gonna keep it moving. That's what it
sounds like.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
That's my quick sports support right there, Man, Brett got
to the hotspot right now.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
It's drop it like it's hard.

Speaker 6 (04:59):
At.

Speaker 7 (05:00):
Good morning, everybody. I'm your girl, Brad, Tad tat, I'm sorry.
Did you want to intro me?

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Rock to go ahead? Dang, let me do it the
right way, ma'am.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
Okay, okay, get ready for to bring it attached hotspot.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Good morning, good well, good morning boy. How are you?

Speaker 7 (05:14):
How are you today? You doing okay, I'm doing great, Brad,
that's what's up. Well, let me get on into this
hotspot where we bring you music, movies and more. So
check this out. Brian Nickknight previously filed a lawsuit against
his ex wife Julie because he claims that she made
false claims about him in her book Mama Bear Beautifully Blended,
basically calling him an abusive husband and neglectful father to

(05:34):
their children. Well, y'all, now Brian is already declaring the
victory in his defamation case after she didn't appear in court. Now,
Brian fouled the motion for default judgment and is waiting
for the court to sign off to make his win official.
But that technically didn't prevent Brian from celebrating prematurely. The
R and B Legend posted a video of himself smoking

(05:55):
a cigar, and here's what he said.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
It's been a long journey getting to this day, October sixteenth,
twenty twenty five, and the verdict is in. We've been quiet,
listening to liars continue to lie, and keeping to ourselves,
living and loving our life, as we said, leaving everything
in God's hands and letting our lawyer do the talking.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
But according to the.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Courts, trying to ruin my name and trying to bring
harm to my family and a book filled with lies
equals eight point eight million dollars.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah. Wow.

Speaker 7 (06:23):
Well, now his son Brian mean N Junior is speaking
out and believes his pop celebration is way out of line.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
And here's what he's saying.

Speaker 8 (06:31):
I've tried, man, I've tried really really hard to let
it go, to be the bigger person, to be mature.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
But it's going on with my dad right now.

Speaker 8 (06:38):
Man, If y'all aren't seeing what's happening, if y'all aren't
seeing the fact that this is just a very hurt,
emotionally unavailable and non intelligent person, the person that is
still has not been able to handle the death of
his own mother, the things that we're seeing him go
through right now. To decide to make certain posts on
my late brother's first day, the gloves are off for me.

(06:59):
Just to keep it real, man.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
It's a messy, messy family situation right there.

Speaker 7 (07:04):
And Junior is referring to his younger brother, Nico McKnight,
who tragically passed in May of this year after a
cancer battle. He would have been thirty two on October sixteenth,
So I think that's when Brian McKnight Senior released the
video celebrating immaturely about winning. So we'll see if he
wins or if he doesn't. But you should never celebrate

(07:25):
too soon if you're not super sure of what's gonna happen.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
You don't know what the court is gonna say. They
will flip it on you. Even if you think you
win it.

Speaker 7 (07:33):
So I'll keep y'all posted on that and last, but
not least, y'all, Brandy was performing with Monica doing that
The Boy's Mind tour stop in the Shy Chicago, That is,
when she abruptly walked off the stage and did not return.
Monica sang the remainder of a solo set, and the
audience was sent home without hearing the duo's iconic track
The Boy's Mind, The Boy's Mind, The Boy's Mind. So

(07:55):
fans speculated that she was frustrated with the sound, but
Brandy revealed that the actual reason is because so she
was dehydrated, and an Instagram post on Sunday, she wrote,
I sincerely apologize for the abruptly into last night's performance
in Chicago. After weeks of NonStop rehearsals, last night, I
experienced dehydration and feelings of wanting to faint. Everyone involved

(08:15):
the greed that prioritizing my well being was of the
most importance. I deeply am grateful to my sister Monica
for stepping up with such grace and professionalism, and to
the entire crew for their continued care and support. Ah Man,
that's crazy. I hope she feels better, because feeling like
you want to faint on stage is no joke. You
get hot, the lights are super bright, the roar from

(08:36):
the crowd, even do something to your body like it's
a bit overwhelming, and the anxiety rises high, especially when
you feel like you're getting ready to pass out, because
you don't want to fall out on stage.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
All right, y'all, Well, we gonna wrap.

Speaker 7 (08:48):
Up the hospital on that note before information on these
stories and more you can go to Ricky Smiley Morning
Show dot com and you can catch me on all
my social media so so Brad, It's the Ricky Smiley
Morning Show.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Aunt John, This's.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Monday time for the State of Blank America, and this
morning we have the current president of the National Urban League,
Mark Morriale.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Hey, good morning with and Mark. We happy to have
you and I know it's a lot going on in
Black America.

Speaker 6 (09:09):
Good morning, Ricky, Mark moray O here again with the
State of Black America. And this morning, I want to
say thank you very much to the people of Memphis.
I spent two days in Memphis last week, and I
especially want to give a shout out to Russell Wigginton
and the National Civil Rights Museum for honoring me with

(09:32):
their Freedom Award. The National Civil Rights Museum is at
the site of the Lorraine Hotel where doctor Martin Luther
King was assassinated on April fourth, nineteen sixty eight. The
transformation of that hotel into a spectacular monument to the
civil rights movement is something you must see. It is

(09:52):
worth a visit to Memphis. What they've done there creates
a chronicle and an ability to tell the story, and
the story is behind the stories of the courage and
fearlessness of men and women who in the forties, the fifties,
the sixties, and the nineteen seventies fought for civil rights
and human rights in this nation. I urge you to

(10:13):
see it. A big thanks and a congratulations to my
Coana Ease, but especially to the team at the National
Civil Rights Museum for they're great welcome and for all
of the people that showed up for a spectacular gala.
I also want to thank the Mayor of Memphis, Paul Young,
and the Mayor of Shelby County, Lee Harris, for their

(10:34):
welcome and the conversations that we had. Memphis is a
great American city, no doubt. With some challenges. Those challenges
are not going to be met with an invasion of
the National Guard. And while the leaders there have to
navigate carefully due to local politics and state politics, let
me make it perfectly clear, there are better uses of

(10:56):
the National Guard than to put them on patrol in
major American cities. In my experience, the National Guard has
been used for hurricane response and natural disaster response, used
to provide protection for major special events like Super Bowls
and the light There's a role for the National Guard.

(11:17):
This is not a role for the National Guard. The
better approach is to provide those resources that cities need
to be able to confront the issues that they face,
the quality of life issues, the issues that lead to
an environment that sometimes may not be as safe as
we want it to be. But also, let's be honest,

(11:39):
gun violence is a problem all across America, with fifty
thousand people losing their lives each year, So let's not
get distracted or deceived. That's simply putting the National Guard
on patrol in our American cities is a solution to
the challenges we have. No, it's more about performative politics
and revenge politics, and that is what it is. Stand

(12:03):
up strong. The people of Memphis stand up strong. The
people of Chicago stand up strong. The people of Washington,
in Portland and all of the cities beyond. Our cities
are great places with great people and showcase the best
of what this nation has to offer. I'm Mark Morial.
This is the State of Black America. Following me across
all social media and I'll see you next week on

(12:24):
the radio.
