Speaker 1 (00:01):
What's up, jammies.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Welcome back to another episode of Ricky's Ramjam, presented by
Barefoot Wind. The Rams came up short against the Bears
on Sunday, but it's on to Week five and we
are hosting the Packers at SOFI Stadium, Big, big show
coming up today. I have Omar Ruiz from NFL Network
joining me in a little bit, and I had the
opportunity to sit down with Xavier Smith after his Week
three major game changing punt return. We talked about that
(00:26):
with a little bit of a Ramjam twist. So that's
coming up soon, so don't go anywhere. But first, the
coin Toss drum roll.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
We had our first hit. We hit you guys. Caleb
Williams was sacked three times in Week four, crowning the
first coin toss victory.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
So if you called it last week, I want to
hear you sound off below that you nailed it.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Give yourself a pat on the back, pour yourself a
nice glass.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Of Barefoot wine, because we are the kings and queens
of the coin Toss. Okay, So for this week, I'm
thinking how about a kyn Williams touchdown. It would be
his eighth consentative game with a rushing touchdown looking pretty
good or I know I've already done this one, but
I want to run it back because I'm willing it
to happen, and I feel like it will to two touchdown.
(01:10):
Obviously we want both, but if you have to pick
option one or two, what are you gonna do. Let's
kick off this episode with style by heading back to
week three. I had the opportunity, like I said, to
sit down with a Xavior Smith to learn more about
his story and that amazing punt return. Check it out,
Savior Smith doing how's it? How's it going?
Speaker 3 (01:29):
It's going good. I love busy, Yeah, but.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
What are you doing? Things like what's going on?
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Just people in general?
Speaker 1 (01:36):
You know, fans, yeah, people, people, your life.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
You know, it is what we work for.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
So I'm enjoying it absolutely absolutely.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Okay, so week three, let's go back to week three
for a second. Okay, there was an incredible punt return
that set up the game winning kick before we Before
we go through that in a little bit more depth,
talk to me about that moment.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
What were you thinking when the ball was in.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
The air, This going to the crib. Yeah, we're about
to win the game. On this return right here.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
So you knew it.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
So so before the play, I think it was second
down or third down. I told Tyler Johnson, I was like,
if they give me a chance back there, I'm about
to win the game for us, and like not wanting
to make it about me, no, but like knowing, like
if I get an opportunity, I'm gonna help my team
win this game.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Yeah, you called it, you called it. Is that how
you envisioned your first NFL touch happening?
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Nah? Nah?
Speaker 4 (02:40):
Like, honestly, thinking about the first one, I was nervous
just because I'm like, I never played in the NFL before,
so it didn't feel nothing like I thought it would have.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
So just having that moment probably it just means a lot.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
It's like, you know, it's just everything I could have
dreamed of and probably more.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, and then so you get the game ball. Take
me through that moment. Did you know what was coming?
Speaker 4 (03:10):
You're honestly I didn't because I felt like it was
one play and maybe I kind of underestimated the severity
of that play, like because to me, it was just
like I'm making a play to put my team in
position to win.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
But then yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Excited and seeing like just saying like for me, my
favorite play was probably like the reaction.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Of the sideline more so than it was what I did.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Yeah. Yeah, So your NFL journey is so humbling.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
And there was a story floating around out there that
when you were in high school you weren't getting necessarily recruited,
so you wanted to take matters into your own hands.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
What did you do to get recruited?
Speaker 5 (03:56):
I was.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
I probably emailed probably like a hundred like coaches like
I wish I still had that email so I could
go find them. I remember the email Zay Smith for
for for what y'ahoo dot com? Yeah, that was my email.
But I emailed probably every coach, like I went down
every college roster and I found the running backs coach
(04:20):
and the receiver coach, the special team coach, and I
emailed them all the same letter.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
You know.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
I never heard nothing back, But even on my Twitter,
I was dming like juco coaches. I was doing everything
trying to find somebody that just give me a.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Did you make your own highlight tape? Is that something
I heard too? So are you like an editor?
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Do you think you're like I look back at that
highlight tape, not like what was I doing?
Speaker 3 (04:46):
I could have did a lot better than what I
put together?
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Was it sort of like you know the old Real
World TV shows where they'd be like, hey, it's Zaber
Smith audition.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
It was Huddle, So like Huddle automatically had a place
you just put him in, Okay, but the order that
I put some of those plays, and I'm like, what
was I doing? Like, no, I could have did a
whole lot better than that I did.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Yeah, but hey, look at you now.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
So I ended up walking on to Florida A and
M and then become an HBCU All American MVP in
the Legacy Ball, Like, so you've you've been that guy.
So how did it feel to put it all together
in your week three first NFL touch, Like to see
the fruits of your labor payoff like that?
Speaker 1 (05:29):
How did that?
Speaker 5 (05:30):
Just?
Speaker 4 (05:31):
It felt good because I know how much I prepared
right all the way up until this moment.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
It wasn't like they told me on playing.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
And then I started preparing like I've been prepared, like
I was the starter all the way from the beginning.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
So once I finally.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Got that opportunity, like I was ready, And that's probably
the most at peace I felt like before a play
like I knew I prepared for this moment, so you know,
thank God.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah, So you seem like a guy that likes to
have some fun though as well. Okay, so if you'll
indulge me, I want to recreate your thirty eight yard
punt return and we're gonna just have you draw it
on the whiteboard.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
But there's gonna be a twist. I'm gonna blindfold you.
Is that okay? Okay, cool, You're gonna have some funky
throw this on.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
So wait, I gotta I gotta put it on a
before I.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Even and then I'm gonna hand it to you. It's
a good look, all right. I'll take the cap off
for you too.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
I feel like Superman.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
All right, here, reach your hand out.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Okay, all right, So what I want you to do
is draw the whole thing out, like the moment the
balls in the air, you're celebrating with your teammates on
the sideline. Don't forget to draw your mom flying in
and being at the game. So walk me through this
play call.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
All right, Okay, it's eleven guys, right, hit one?
Speaker 5 (06:54):
All right?
Speaker 3 (06:54):
I know that's he a right. So he punted to me.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Okay, your spatial awareness is very good. It makes sense
why he is a wide receiver.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Okay. So he punted this the planet right here, puts
it down. I see it. I see this, gunna.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
He's kind of he's kind of split both of my
jamas and.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
He gets by right here.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
So once I catch it, I just make him miss.
Like I got like four blockers. They come down and
they set in the wall they supposed to set.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Can you see you're crushing the draw No, I can't see.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
I don't lie, don't from I'm just like you know,
I got it.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
He's not, dude, I got it X ray X ray vision.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
So you missing?
Speaker 1 (07:51):
You got four blockers.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
Okay, So they set the wall. When they set the wall,
I know if I make my guy, they did their job.
They already set the wall, so it's on me to
get behind the wall and take it out the sideline.
I see the panner, so I try to weave him
(08:14):
in and weave him back out, and then he.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Kind of knocked me out. And then you know, mon, dude,
you understand this.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
Dude?
Speaker 4 (08:23):
There she is, she's screaming, and I see her, so
I point to her and you know, I kind of just.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Hard.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
I get a heart.
Speaker 5 (08:35):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
You want to see your drawing, you can take you
can take a pic. You did a really good job.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Okay, Okay, that's what's up.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
How did you? Are you sure? That was that was great?
So yeah that was your first touch in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
See but yeah, yeah, that's kind of how it went.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
To me.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
That's my favorite part of like just seeing the sideline
in the.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Background going crazy.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Yeah, like saying, like seeing that that excitement for me?
Speaker 3 (09:13):
That was that that meant.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Yeah, yeah, no, I can I can watch that all day.
Thanks so much for hanging out today.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
How can you not root for that guy? That was
so much fun. We we just looked back and now
it's time.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
To look forward to the Packers and to do that,
we welcome in NFL Network reporter Omar Ruiz.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
Omar, it is so great to see you.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Always a pleasure to join you and always a pleasure
to see you.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
So so good to see you.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
It's a get right game for the Rams on Sunday
at Sofi and I want to talk about the run game.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
But first you were at Sofi.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
This weekend with your daughter who was sporting the cutest
but daddy, I love him, you know, Tortured Poets Department,
Taylor Swift, merch Dad of the Year. But now you
got to make you know, I know Travis Kelsey was
at so far this weekend, but you got to get
her to a Rams game. Come on, Homer, what are
we doing?
Speaker 5 (10:05):
Well? She she's only been to Rams game. This was
her first non Rams game. Okay, fair, So you know
she's still a Rams fan at heart, but now is
a Travis Kelce fan because of the Taylor Swift connection.
And it's just unbelievable for me as a dad. And
I don't care what it is. I think I think
we can only ask as parents to have your kids
(10:25):
engaged in something, and for her to be so engaged
with Taylor Swift and her songs and knowing all the
words to hundreds of songs and all the catalogs of
the albums is just really cool to see her enthusiasm
for that. And if it's a if it's a connection
to football for her and it allows me to be
a football dad because of that for her, then you know, hecky,
(10:46):
I'm gonna support that.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Yeah, I love that. That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
I love all three of your girls incredibly much, and
I'm very happy to hear that they're swift these like
Auntie Erica.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
That's very that's very important to me. So let's talk Rams.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
You know, you know them well, you cover all teams,
but you do know the Rams very well. Kyen Williams
has a rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games. How important
is that to continue? But also to get Kyen in
the run game going on Sunday, especially against the Packers, Well.
Speaker 5 (11:18):
I think it's critical, and I think that's important for
every game. And you know, of course every team in
the NFL wants to establish the run but I think
for the Rams, how they are right now, you know,
just kind of looking to find their footing, and I
think to establish that physicality in the run game that
Sean McVay likes to play with and to set the tone.
I think it's important for all those reasons, and because
(11:39):
Kyron Williams can be a player that is a heartbeat
to the team, you know, with his style and his
energy and just the way he runs the football and
how that's you know, so contagious to a football team.
I think for all of those reasons, it's important to
get him going, and obviously for the reason you just said,
because simply he gets into the end zone and they
(12:02):
need to find ways to continue to score touchdowns. I think,
you know, that was the difference in Chicago, the fact
that you know, the Rams had five scores to the
Bears four scores, but the Bears had two touchdowns, and
then that essentially was the difference in the game. So
finding ways to get into the end zone. Writing Kyra
Williams for the energy, the enthusiasm, setting the tone, all
those reasons will be critically important against the Packers as well.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Yeah, it's it's seven straight games with a rushing touchdown,
second longest in franchise history since nineteen seventy when the
merger happened, and coach McVeigh was talking about it on
the you Know the Coaches Show this week about how
what was most frustrating for the team is not the
lack of play, but the lack of execution. And so
(12:44):
I think using that because this team is so capable,
even with all the injuries, even with all the missing
pieces that to get Kiren and some of these other
players that we're going to talk about like getting the
fundamentals right because it's it's just like an exeit cution thing,
which they've had a couple of missteps with. You know,
two tou aut Well has been impressive the last two weeks.
(13:05):
We don't have cup Puka's sidelined. This has really, you know,
impacted the Rams offense. But how do you see these
guys like a Kiren, like a tow Too, even a
Jordan Winnington stepping up to help this offense on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
Well, they need to continue to do so. It's Robinson
another player who's kind of stepped to the forefront in
the absence of the big two Pookah and Cooper being absent.
They'll need to continue to do that because obviously with
Kyne being able to establish himself, it's going to open
up the pass game and that'll be key for them.
We didn't even mention that component for how important it
(13:39):
is to get Kiren going to open things up for
Stafford in those passing lanes and for the players you
just mentioned to to and winning Can everybody else to
be able to step up and have those opportunities.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Yeah, Matthew Stafford just passed Eli Manning to move into
tenth all time in career passing yards. And he also
achieved this which I like to brag for him because
he's such a humble guy. Anyways, he also achieved this
milestone in sixteen less games.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
Than Eli Manning. So he's just a badass.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Like Matthew Stafford is that gunslinger, and it's really exciting
to see sort of the way that they have been
using Jordan Winnington, and you can see that Stafford's kind
of developing a connection with him where he feels comfortable
throwing to him. I mean too to out well, you know,
ninety three and eighty two receiving yards in the last
two weeks. So using these guys in the step up
(14:31):
fashion as you just alluded to has been has been
really important. So Jordan Love was back under center in
the Week four loss to Minnesota. He threw four touchdowns,
but he also threw three interceptions. How do the Rams
go about limiting Love and this offense?
Speaker 5 (14:48):
Well, trying to go for the ball and you know
they know they're going to have opportunities. You mentioned gun
slinger with Matthew Stafford. Jordan Love is somebody who is
ultra confident in his ability his arms strength is his
ability to fit the balls into tight windows, and so
they're gonna have their opportunities. And obviously Minnesota took advantage
of those opportunities, and the Rams will have to do
(15:10):
the same. I just find it ironic that you know,
their franchise quarterback in the lineup, they're zero and two
and have their backup right just traded for a week
before the season started there two and oh. But that's
just how the NFL is. Sometimes Sometimes things just don't
make sense, and in a lot of the ways how
the Packers have started doesn't make sense in that regard.
(15:32):
But I think, you know, for the Rams to limit
Jordan Loven to create more of those opportunities will be
to slow down Josh Jacobs. And we saw wed a
couple of weeks ago and he went wild running the
football and they're able to ride him to a victory.
So I think, you know, stopping the run for the
Rams will force Jordan Loves to throw and then and
then you know, try to capitalize on those turnover opportunities
(15:53):
to really shift the ball game in the rams favor.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Yeah, I mean, cornerback Darius Williams practice window started and
has a chance to play Sunday. I think as of
the moment that we're taping this, he hasn't been decided
whether he'll play or not or what that status is.
I know Cooper Cup will not be playing, but then
there's the bye week, so there's a lot to like
sort of just hold.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
On for for the Rams.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
The Rams have the number.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
One pressure rate in the NFL this season.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Like, let's talk about a couple guys, Omar, what do
you think about you know, Braydon Fisk getting his first
career sack against the Bears and he had a ninety
point six PFF grade. Or Jared Verse has been really dominant.
Obviously we are missing Aaron Donald and no one can
replace him. But what have you seen about this young
Rams defense that makes you excited about the future.
Speaker 5 (16:40):
The relentless, they're ferocious. You know that this sack, especially
to sort of you know, wedge himself in the hole
and then overpower the lineman to get to Caleb Williams,
was just impressive. I Mean, that's that's what you hope
every interior defensive lineman has the ability to do, and
they don't always are able to do that kind of
kind of show off the speed to beat the man
(17:02):
in the middle of the hole and then overpower within
the same play. And it's something we saw obviously for
years with Aaron Donald. And and you know, I think
this is just part of the legacy of Aaron Donald.
I think for a couple of years, we are still
just going to talk about him, the shadow that he
has on the history of the RAMS, on the history
(17:24):
of the NFL. And I feel like it's just so
unfair to compare, you know, these rookies, you know, to
Aaron Donald in that same breath. But that's just the
way it is. That's just how this organization, you know,
winning a Super Bowl with Donald leading the way, It's
just how it's going to be for a couple of years.
But all that being said, I think he would be
proud of the effort of these young guys you mentioned,
(17:44):
you know, Fisk and Verse, you know, they're leading the
team for the guys up front in tackles. You know,
kind of speaks to their effort making the most of
the opportunities when when ball carriers where there's quarterback or
running backs, you know, find them, you know, not letting
the you know, tackles be broken. You know, by the
ball carrier and the effort and everything like that. And
(18:04):
then you know, to see you know, Kobe Turner and
Barn Young they're making plays as well. And so just
to see that youth and the relentless, relentlessness that they
play with is encouraging and it's exciting. And I think,
you know, you mentioned Darius Williams, you know, hopefully coming
back to kind of strengthen that that secondary for it
to come together. And I think, you know, as they
sit here one in three and you know, obviously in
(18:28):
Arizona a couple weeks ago, you didn't look good. You know,
there's frustration in Chicago, you know, the miracle comeback in
San Francisco. I think, you know, what we saw in
San Francisco, I think embodies, you know, kind of like
the leadership that we've seen from Sean McVay that, no
matter how the chips may be stacked against them in
this year, injuries, you know, just overwhelmingly so this first
(18:49):
month of the season, just taking it one week at
a time, still continuing to work and develop and come together.
And I think that's where they find themselves now. And
I think, you know, Sean has said it, they have
to continue to work. You mentioned the fun of mentals,
and that's just those are components in continuing to get
better as a year goes on, and hopefully for them
it translates into wins. But I think the talent is there,
(19:10):
and especially when you consider, you know, the injuries and
hopefully those guys eventually come back and really fortify the team.
And you know what happens when you get a team
that has so many injuries early on, You get guys
that weren't counted on playing necessarily early, but they do
get those value and then you build that depth for
a playoff push. So you know, kind of when you
think about things optimistically, especially when you consider that so
(19:31):
many players on that roster we're part of that three
and six team last year and made that push and
continue to develop. I think they have an opportunity to
do it just from an earlier standpoint this year. But
the talent, I think is there, the work ethic is there,
and the leadership is there for these twenty twenty four rams, oh.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Mar the ram jam I asked my same three questions
to every guest. Describe your perfect day start to finish.
Speaker 5 (19:57):
Well, we're in the perfect season. For it, and I'll
even throw a little wrinkle. You know, at NFL Network
were starting the European Games tour. We're gonna have three
London games and then the Germany games a couple of
weeks after that. So starting with football at six thirty pm,
watching the games all day, and then the night game
(20:19):
sandwiched with playoff baseball, you know, having both TVs going
Sunday night, Football, playoff Baseball. I'm a huge Dodger fan,
so hopefully the Dodgers will have, you know, some of
those primetime windows and then the same thing on Monday nights,
Thursday nights, you have those primetime games, you have the baseball.
You know, throw some meat on the grill, maybe a
cold one there. You know, I think we have our
(20:41):
perfect day cook in there.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Yeah, you're speaking, you're speaking my language.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Which celebrity would you like to switch lives for for
one day?
Speaker 5 (20:47):
And why, oh that is a good one. I would
say Chris Pratt. You know, he's always a guy like
he's he's funny, he's an action star. It just seems
like he has so much fun when he goes into work,
and you know, like I love to have fun when
I go into work and just kind of being on
all those sets and Guardians of the Galaxy. It's all
(21:08):
silly stuff, you know, and and he just seems like
he's having a blast for those reasons. You know, I
think that would be just so cool to be this
big movie star just having a blast at work, not
taking himself so seriously, but still you know, producing content
that people love to watch.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Yeah, you go Guardians of the Galaxy to Jurassic Park.
He's he's been on a hit on, you know, a
hit after hit list for forever. So that's a good answer.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
Yeah, thank you, and get I love going and you know,
the girls, we love going to Universal Studios for so far.
Ride it's so awesome, especially now they've kind of redone
it with the Chris Prap movies and the you know,
the huge you know shark. I forget the actual name
of the dinosaur name for it, but it's like, you know,
this new thing that crashed it into the window and
then you then you have the Tyrannosaurus Rex versus that
(21:52):
new crazy dinosaur is just so awesome, you know.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Oh my gosh, it's so fun.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
And I love the original Jurassic Park is like one
of the Spielberg like, oh yeah, one of my favorites
is one of my favorites iced coffee on a snowy day,
or a hot coffee in a heat wave.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
Oh geez, that is a great westkit. Oh my god, gosh,
I'm gonna say hot cop because I do this hot
coffee on a hot day because you know, like I
usually have a coffee maybe in the afternoon before I
go to the gym, and that really gets me kind
of sweaty and sort of like warm smith already. It's
(22:30):
not even having to warm up. It gets kind of
the juices flowing, and I'm able to have a good workout.
The caffeine pushes me through. And it's hard for me
to have cold stuff in cold weather. I'm not built
for the cold. You know. Some some teams aren't built
to come from behind. I'm not built for the cold.
I can deal with the cold, obviously. We get into
those playoff months and they're out in New England week
eighteen and it's snowing everywhere. I can deal with it,
(22:53):
but I'm not built for it. Erica, So I got
a hot coffee on a hot day all day long?
