Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know, wine and football aren't that different. Sure they're complex,
but enjoying them should be easy. You don't need to
worry about complex formations and flavor profiles, or which wine
pairs with what all that matters is together. Barefoot Wine
and rams are easy to enjoy, so let's enjoy ourselves.
Barefoot the official wine sponsor of the NFL. What's up, jammies,

(00:25):
Welcome back to another episode of Ricky's Ramjam presented by
Barefoot Wine. What a fun, exciting win over the Raiders
at SOFI on Sunday twenty to fifteen. There's only a
little time to reflect because TNF and the Vikings are
upon us. Marcus Grant from NFL Network will be joining
me soon, but first we have to do the coin toss,
So this week I need you guys to weigh in

(00:45):
at the game on Sunday. And then an awesome fan
who said he loves this part of the show all
the way from Montreal shout out. It was really great
to meet you. Okay, So here are the two options.
Option number one is a Cooper Cup touchdown. It will
feel so good to see that again under the right
lights at SOFI. And option to another Rams defensive takeaway,
either a fumble, recovery or an interception. Comment below what

(01:08):
you think is more likely to happen for the coin
toss option one or two. Joining me now is a
fantasy editor and analyst for NFL dot Com.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
He's also on the radio. It's Marcus Grant. Marcus. What
You're doing a lot of different things right now?

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, probably more than the law allows, between all the
stuff and the NFL network, being on Fantasy Live, doing
the NFL Fantasy Podcast a couple of times a week,
and doing some part time fill in radio at ESPN
seven Sin, which is the.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
Home the radio home of the Rams at the same time.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
So a little bit of everything kind of got my
fingers in a whole lot of pies right now.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
It's so good to see you. We were just talking
off air.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
There's obviously a lot of exciting things happening with the Rams,
but I.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Want to look back. It's a short week, you know.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
We have two home games in five days, so the
Vikings are coming to so far for Thursday night football.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
But I want to look back at the Raiders. It
was a big win.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
The defense was doing some work over the by and
it really showed when they came off of it. What
do you make of the performance from this young, hungry group.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
I mean, I think it was good, right.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
It was very encouraging because obviously this was a defense
that was going to look very different. You lose Aaron
Donald in the middle to retirement, they make the trade
where they ship out Ernest Jones just before the start
of the season. Those are two really big pieces right
in the middle of the defense. And I think we
saw the struggles of that group in the first few

(02:35):
weeks of the season, but to see them get a
win and look, yeah, I mean, I think you have
to sort of understand, right, this is not a Raider
team that anybody thinks is going to be a long
time contender. But for a team like the Rams that's
really trying to build some things on the defensive side
of the football, I think you still take encouragement from
what you saw from this group. So they went out,
they held the Raiders down, they got a really big win.

(02:57):
And the fact is in the NFC West still wide open.
I mean, the forty nine ers have a slew of issues.
The Cardinals, I think are still sort of trying to
figure themselves. Out, the Seahawks are in first place, but
I couldn't tell you what the identity of the Seattle
Seahawks is right now. So even sitting at two and four,
the Rams aren't out of this thing by a long

(03:18):
shot right now. So to see what they saw from
the defense, I think has to give them hope for
what's to come.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah, four takeaways in week seven, which was great. So
staying with that first round pick, Jared Verse career high
nine pressures on thirty six pass rush versus the Raiders.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
How high is the ceiling on Jared Verse?

Speaker 4 (03:36):
I think it's very high on Jared Verse.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
And you know, you saw why the Rams liked him
so much and brought him in, and so far he
has been fantastic for this team. In fact, Jared Verse
and Brayden Fisk, the two guys who played together at
Florida State, were drafted by the Rams. Together they are
one and two in QB pressures among rookies. So I
think that gives you hope for what this group can be,
what this duo can be going forward. It takes more

(04:01):
than one person to replace an Aaron Donald, right, like
nobody was going to step in and fill that gap
for ninety nine. But you do have the beginnings of something,
because the thing we've seen in this NFL is it
really does start up front. If you can get pressure
on the quarterback, if you can make the quarterback uncomfortable,
that helps you out so much on the back end

(04:22):
where you've got you've got some youth in that secondary right,
so you can get pressure on the quarterback. It makes
that job a lot easier. You don't have to cover
for quite as long. It allows you to be maybe
a little bit more aggressive as well. So I think
the erarow very much pointing up on both Verse and Fisk.
And hopefully what we saw this past week you mentioned
the nine pressures. Hopefully what we saw against the Raiders
is those guys starting to figure out what they can

(04:45):
do and how to sort of play the game in
this league, and maybe they can build on that going forward.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Next Gen Stats tweeted out that through week seven, he's
league leading in twenty three point six percent pressure rate,
and Chris Long, who I've always admired his game quote,
tweeted it and said he's such a disruptor. Love his
game power, lots of stutter off the ball and lots
of sitting tackles down to the edge, relentless. So I
love to see that type of like pump up from

(05:11):
someone who was such a you know, an esteemed pass rusher.
And then Jalen McCullough, an undropped free agent, has three
interceptions in the last two games. How will he and
the rest of this RAMS secondary look to affect Sam
Darnold and you know Justin Jefferson coming and Jordan Addison.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Yeah, I mean for well, for Donald and Addison, a
little bit of a homecoming, right, a couple of USC
guys coming back to play in Los Angeles this week.
I think for Donald it's again we're going back to
Verse and Fisk and those guys up front.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
It is getting him under pressure.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
You know, this is a guy who generally speaking, has
done really well against man defenses, but we've seen teams
sort of switch things up and make life difficult for them.
You gotta get Sam Donald under pressure. You can't let
him have a clean pocket. I think with Justin jeff
it's sort of understanding that he's going to get his

(06:04):
You just have to limit the big plays. You can't
allow the big plays over the top of the defense.
You've got to try to keep everything in front of you.
He's going to get his catches. That's just who he is.
You're talking about arguably the best receiver in the league
right now. So it's just sort of limiting the damage
after the catch. I think the same thing for Jordan Addison,
because he's proven that he can stretch the defense, he
can get downfield. Donald is not afraid to take those

(06:26):
shots over the top of him. So for the Rams,
you just don't want to let anybody get behind you,
understanding that this is an offense that's going to move
the ball. Donald playing some of the best football of
his career right now, and you know he's he's at
least being talked about as an MVP candidate. We'll see
how long it lasts, but that's how well he's playing
right now. So for the Rams, it really is just

(06:47):
about sort of limiting the damage, forcing the Vikings to
have to go long drives down the field, you know,
preventing big plays as much as possible, you know, and
you know, I know it's a cliche, but limit them
to threes instead of sevens.

Speaker 4 (07:00):
That gives you a chance for your offense to come
back the other way and try to win.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Sam Darnold twelve touchdowns, five interceptions this season. Hopefully we're
adding some more to that list come Thursday. Cooper Cup
expected to play Thursday. How much of a boost does
he provide to this Rams offense.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
It's huge, right, I mean you've seen over the years
the connection that he and matt Stafford have and how
well they work together. And I give Matthew Stafford all
the credit in the world because statistically it might not
be showing, but that man is playing his butt off
this year for this team. I mean, he's going out
and he's playing the quarterback position, I think as well
as can be expected under the circumstances that he's given, right,

(07:39):
having lost Pooka Nakua and lost Cooper Cup for an
extended stretch, and really trying to make it work. I
mean the fact that two two out, Well's going out
and having some nice games that he's trying to sort
of make it work with Jordan Whittington and guys like that.
I think Matthew Stafford has played some really good football
this season. He just hasn't had the type of weapons
he's used to having there.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
Getting Cooper Cup back means that he can do that.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
He's got that guy that you know, when things start
to break down and he's in trouble, he can sort
of go look around and say, you know what, bleep it,
Cooper's out there somewhere, and he'll find him to try
to make a play for him. So I think I
think that's a big boost to the confidence of Stafford
and this offense. And on top of it, because you've
got cut back potentially, that means if you're the Vikings defense,
you cannot You've got to dedicate some extra resources there,

(08:25):
and so hopefully that makes things a little bit easier
for the rest of those guys catching the football.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Yeah, and Tuesday morning, the Rams designated Puga to return
to his twenty one day practice window, which is very
exciting for Rams fans across the league and it will
be so great to see him back out on the
field and to give Stafford those weapons. Rams fans and
fantasy owners are rejoicing about number twenty three and horns

(08:52):
nine straight games with a rushing touchdown.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Why is kyron a must start in fantasy football?

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Because he's got nine straight games with its down. Look,
I want to use this opportunity on this forum to
issue a public apology for doubting Kyrone Williams.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Thank you, I'll take it.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
I Kien Williams this year, and it wasn't so much
that I didn't think he was a good player, because
obviously what he did last year was amazing. I didn't
know that Sean McVay was going to lean on him
as heavily as they have this year. I saw the
Rams go out and draft Blake Koram, coming off a

(09:30):
national championship at the University of Michigan, thought he was
a good player and realized that, Look, there's a thing
about believing in draft capital.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Right.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
The Rams spent a higher draft pick on Blake Coreum
than they did on Kyron Williams.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Sometimes that means something. This year, it has it.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
The Rams obviously know what they have in Kien Williams.
They've made him into a true workhorse running back. I
think every time every time somebody out there, whether it's
in the real NFL or in the fantasy community, throws
any kind of doubt as to what Kien Williams can be,
he goes out the next week and reminds us exactly
why he is getting the kind of opportunities that he has,

(10:07):
but the fact that he does everything. I mean, he's
incredibly efficient running the football. He's got a great nose
for the end zone. I mean, there were times last
year and even earlier this year where nothing was working
for the Rams, but Kyen Williams was working for the Rams,
and so he's been fantastic. I again, I apologize for
ever doubting. I no longer doubt. I believe Kien Williams

(10:27):
truly is him, and it really hasn't been a joy
to kind of watch him play over the last couple
of years, and I look forward to kind of seeing
it again for the next year or however much longer.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
The Rams want to ride him.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Absolutely, I'll let him know that you apologized, because you
know I'll tell him first.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
He's due, so I will don't worry.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
We have a big TNF game obviously coming up, and
the Dodgers are in the World Series beginning Friday. You know,
you're a huge baseball guy. Who on the Dodgers do
you think could make an impact for one snap if
they were playing for the Rams.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
And what position do you think they would be playing.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
So I will give you a couple of guys.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
First one, the the easy answer for me is Mookie Betts,
just because MOOKI is good at everything. Yes, I mean,
this is a guy who's spent most of his career
as an outfielder. The start of this year, the Dodgers
were like, hey, we want you to try shortstop, and
so he's like bet and he went out and he uh,
you know, it was sort of a work in progress
defensively a shortstop, but still was still was hitting the

(11:26):
ball great and was getting better at shortstop. This is
a guy who has bowled three hundred games, you know,
like he's he's great as a bowler. He's just an
amazing athlete. And I think that you know, you could
put him in the backfield or maybe as a slot
receiver and he would find a way to get open
and get you a big catch at a first down.
The other guy I would say is Michael Kopek is

(11:46):
maybe a tight end coming out of the bullpen, big,
strong guy, kind of intimidating. He's got the big beard.
Like Michael Kopek. If you saw him walking around Silver Like,
you wouldn't look twice at him because he completely fits
that vibe over there. But just a sort of intimidating
guy on the mound. I think as a tight end,
you know either, I don't know if he catches the
ball well, but maybe in the run game he could

(12:07):
just open up some holes or set the edge and
help Kyroen get to the outside. I think Kopek would
be a nice, nice pick for one play.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
I love that Mookie Bets came down to training camp
this year as well. So who knows, let's start those
trade rumors. Maybe after a World Series win, the Rams
are gonna go on a huge run. Maybe we maybe
we get a little cross you know, pollination here with
with the LA sports.

Speaker 4 (12:29):
I mean, hey, look, I don't, I don't.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
I don't know if you've heard this, Ricky, but Matthew
Stafford and Clayton Kershaw they're friends.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
They know each other.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Oh really, I've never heard that before.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
That's I'm the first person to ever make this connection. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
Also on the flip side, like I feel like Matthew
Stafford is good at everything too, so I feel like
you could put him maybe at like a third base
and just with that strength to get it to first
and his hand eye coordination like such a legend. All right,
let's do the ram jam before I let you go.
Each show, I asked my guest the same three questions.

(13:03):
So describe your perfect day start to finish.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
Oh, my perfect day would be, let's see, waking up
in the morning, having a nice cup of coffee and
you know, kind of a nice breakfast with the family,
and then I would actually go into downtown Los Angeles.
One of my favorite spots in the city is the
Last Bookstore right in downtown, you know, kind of perusing

(13:28):
the bookstore, maybe grabbing a couple of comic books. They
have a record section, maybe picking up some vinyl, and
then from there it's a short walk over to the
Grand Central Market, grab something to eat for lunch, some
kind of street food or something like that, have a
nice lunch, you know, and then if depending on the
time and the weather, maybe a quick stop of the
beach and have a beer over at the beach for

(13:50):
a little bit, and then you know, back home to
crash on the couch watching a terrible sci fi movie.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
I love that. It sounds like an amazing day. Which
celebrity would you like to switch lots for one day?
And why?

Speaker 3 (14:03):
Ooh, I would switch like I would probably say Donald
Glover slash Childish Gambino. I think he's just incredibly talented
in so many different areas. Uh, you know, whether there's
a writer, performer, you know, actor, musician, what have you.
I just think he's incredibly creative. I also just think
his mind works a little bit differently than a lot

(14:25):
of other people. So, like, just for a day, just
to kind of see what it's like to be childish Gambino,
I think would be kind of fun.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
I love that iced coffee on a snowy day or
a hot coffee in a heat wave.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
I would probably go with an iced coffee on a
snowy day, just but my logic being I you know,
I enjoy eating ice cream in the middle of December
when it's cold. I mean, I know that La cold
is different than like, you know, real people cold in
other parts of the country. But you know, sometimes it's
chilly and uh like, you know what, a nice big

(15:00):
bowl of ice cream and curling up under a blanket
seems like a good idea.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
So we'll go iced coffee on a snowy day.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
I love that. Marcus.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Thank you so much for your insight as always, and
it's so so good to see you.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
You as well, Ricky. I appreciate you having me on
and looking forward to Thursday night. It should be a
lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
There he goes.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
He is right. Thursday night is going to be a
ton of fun and we can't wait to see you
at Sofi Stadium. It's going to be an exciting, exciting game.
There's so much to look forward to, and wow, what
a short week. I can't believe we're already here.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
You guys know what to do. Let's ram it.
