Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know, wine and football aren't that different. Sure they're complex,
but enjoying them should be easy. You don't need to
worry about complex formations and flavor profiles or which wine
pairs with what all that matters is together. Barefoot Wine
and the Rams are easy to enjoy, So let's enjoy ourselves.
Barefoot Wine the official wine sponsor of the NFL.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
What's up, Jammies, What's up NFC West Champion Jammies. Welcome
back to another episode of Rickey's Ramjam, presented by Barefoot
Wine and Wine on tap for everyone today. Coming up soon,
Connor Or will join me to preview the Seahawks and
look ahead to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
But let me break it down a little bit first.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Okay, the Rams beat the Cardinals on Saturday night in
primetime thirteen to nine. The energy was immaculate at SOFI.
Let me read this tweet from JB Long, the Voice
of the Rams, to you quote in Chris Shula's lifetime.
The only Rams defensive coordinator to hold three straight opponents
to single digit is Chris Shula. That's a really fun fact.
(01:03):
The defense was bawling out two interceptions and four sacks
against the Cards Okay, you know what time it is.
Let's see the coinin toss, all right, Jimmy's hands up
if you called option one last week, I was an
idiot and said two sacks for Kyler Murray. Brandon Fisk
got two alone, four sacks total for the defense last week,
really showing us what's up.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Good on them.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Okay, for this week, you know, I watched the Coach
mcfagh show, which with JB.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Long. If you haven't seen it this week, check it out.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Coach talked a lot about kind of what their approach
is for the Seahawks game and beyond. I think we
are going to see a little bit of Jimmy garoppolo.
So let's do option one two pass touchdowns from Jimmy G.
Two Jimmy G pass tds. That would be fun. And
then also, you know, we'll give Kyrin a little break,
and let's really kind of give Blake Korum these opportunities.
(01:54):
Let's see a Blake Koram touchdown. Okay, Option one or two?
What's it gonna be? Let me know below all right?
Joining me now is senior writer from Sports Illustrated, Connor
Or Connor. How nice is it to not only see me,
but hear this beautiful voice of mine over the years.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
It's even more angelic than I remember from our days
working together.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
So it's great to see you.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah, this is my Michael Jordan.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Like flu game made it through Saturday, the primetime game, Sunday, Monday,
down and out and then what a better way to
go into the new year than you know, on my deathbed.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
Yes, that's it. It's like a symbol of rebirth for
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Absolutely, that's such a positive spin, and that's so that's
so great. Speaking of positive spins, how cool was it
to watch this team go from one to four to
ending up as NFC West champs.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
Amazing?
Speaker 4 (02:50):
I mean, you know, we talked about this all the time,
like if you have you just want the best playoff field.
And the Rams are interesting, right because last three games
were really defensive performances, but before that they were winning shootouts.
And to me, they remind me almost like of a
higher ceiling Buccaneers at this point, and those are the
(03:10):
teams that you want in the playoffs where like anything
can happen. And I remember last year talking to some
people in that building and when they started winning at
the end, of the year and getting close to the playoffs,
they were like, if we get in, we're not just
gonna We're gonna win the super Bowl. Like That's how
that was the feeling at that point, and I do
believe that I think that this team has a similar vibe.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
I mean, before the trade deadline, many wondered if the
Rams would be sellers. What do you think about the
decision to stay put, get healthy, and then hunt down
a division title.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
It never made sense to me to get rid of
especially Cooper, right, It never made sense to me to
get rid of Cooper because even now, like there are
people and yes, he's on my fantasy team too, but like,
you know, it's one of these things that, well you
just trade him to the Chiefs and neverone will be awesome.
But it's like Cooper super important to everything that they do,
and especially when he's not doesn't have the on his hands, right,
(04:01):
So that to me was like you can't get rid
of him because if you get rid of him, then what's.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
The point of you know, any of existence?
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Right, right, But like yeah, but uh no, I thought
it was always you know, if you have Sean, if
you have Matt, you're going for it, and I love
that attitude, you know.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
I mean coach McVeigh is really he's not going to
get you know, the Coach of the Year nods, but
what he's done with this team willing them to win
in so many different ways. And like you just said it,
when you have Matthew, you have Cooper, you have Pookah,
and you have Coach McVeigh who has done this, you know,
year after year. Like I think the head coaching job
(04:40):
is cannot go understated.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
Head coaching job, and even in the executive chair, I mean,
you know, you have an offensive line with sixth round picks,
with fourth round picks, with undrafted free agents who are
playing probably if not as good at bar better than
probably ninety percent of the end NFL right now.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
And there are some years where you just get that,
Like I remember Chicago a couple of years ago had
that and it's magical. But it's also great coaching and
it's great talent identification. And Matt Stafford, when he's a
clean pocket, is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
And he's had a clean pocket, you know, thanks to
these guys. So I think the whole operation like this
is one of those good like operational years where it's
(05:23):
like yes, like you know, okay, we.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
Don't have Aaron Donald. We don't have you know whoever, whoever.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
We've had guys who are hurt, but look at all
the cool things we're still doing.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Did you see that video of Aaron Donald like dancing
at the TV when the Rams clinched the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
It's my favorite video of all time, Like he was
just so happy.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
I got really excited because every year I do one
hundred predictions, which is far too many, one hundred days
before the season, and one of them was that the
Rams were gonna get hot down the stretch make the
playoffs and Aaron Donald was gonna unretire. And when I
saw it, and I was like, here we go, Like
but you know, maybe you still have time, Aaron.
Speaker 5 (05:56):
Let's go come on.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Yeah, I think we spread something that there's like some
If it's not by week thirteen, then he has to
clear waivers or whatever. Just pay him whatever, just come back,
just make it happen. Like this is crazy. I sent
him so many texts and emails and like he just
doesn't answer. I don't know if they're going through or what,
but he doesn't seem to be super too interested.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
Try just try showing up at his front door.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
That always works exactly exactly.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Well, his wife is named Erica, So I was like, hey, Aaron, like,
isn't it cool that like two Ericas are super cool?
He was like, yeah, what are you talking about? Like
my first training camp. I was like, all right, Yeah,
that didn't work the.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Way I like thought it. He was gonna, you know,
make us like the FFS. It didn't work.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
But this Young defense has been so impressive. I mean
it's a first year defensive coordinator with Kris Shula. I
mean they've held the last three opponents to single digits.
Like this Young defense, Like, what is the most impressive
to you about this unit?
Speaker 4 (06:55):
So this is one of the few times that I
will take issue with, Like, I think PFF does an
unbelievable job. And it could just be like when I'm
watching and I go back and I do watch every game,
but or maybe it's like a visual thing. But like
Braden Fisk and Byron Young have been like two of
my favorite players, and maybe it is like a just
like one of those things where I turn on the
(07:17):
game or you know, my attention's just drawn to them,
but I feel like they've been awesome.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
And I mean, obviously.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
Jared Vers is you know, defensive Rookie of the Year material,
you know, I mean just playing.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Brad Fisk might even be too, which is crazy to
have two wild.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
I agree, And that's what's so fun about this, And
you know, having Chris Shula having worked his way up
through that system. The defensive coordinator job is such a
big one for McVeigh because you know, he only historically
picks guys that would give him fits if he played
against them, you know, and and would give him trouble.
And I think that's such a compliment to Chris, first
(07:53):
of all that he would be able to get even
get that job, you know, but second of all, to
do what he did with such a young team. I mean,
these guys are fun, and that's what you want in
the playoffs, right It is like, you know, we want
to introduce the world to these people, and we want
a crazy berserker game where Braden Fisk and Jared Vers
have like, you know, six sacks. You know, that's that's
what you want in the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
That's what I want anyway.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Yeah, No, I mean we all want that.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
I mean thirteen sacksimone rookies, the most in the NFL
between those two, which is crazy. You know, we talked
a little bit about Coop, but let's talk a little Pooka.
He's setting records almost weekly at this point. You know,
he's the most receiving yards over players first two seasons
in franchise history for the Rams. I mean, if this
guy gets going with what you talked about with Cooper,
(08:38):
like what makes him so like unstoppable, Like he's just
so difficult to cover?
Speaker 5 (08:46):
Yeah, I think it's two things, right.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
It's the willingness to block and to set yourself up
and to get yourself open. And then it's the yards
after the catch and how hard you are to bring down.
So it's like, I mean, it's almost like having like
a a like a baby Marshawn Lynch that's a receiver,
you know. I mean, you know you're grinding, you're grinding
out yards after the catch, and that it's just a
demoral like just how coaches say, like, Okay, if I
(09:11):
run sa Quon Barkley thirty times a game or Derek
Henry thirty times a game, it's demoralizing. Well, if Pooka
and Aqua gets ten touches a game, it's completely demoralizing.
Cornerback doesn't want to deal with that, and especially half
the time it's just Puka's hands on you trying to
steer you away from a running play. Like that's just
a horrible afternoon for a defensive player. So that's why
I love watching him. He's so physical.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Yeah, he's crazy, he's he's so much fun to watch.
The Seahawks come to so far on Sunday, and it's
an opportunity to get some guys some rest, but also
a great opportunity to get some meaningful snaps for some
of these other guys, Like on Sunday, what are you
looking forward to seeing from, you know, guys like Jimmy
Garoppolo and maybe even Blake Koram, which I'm like excited
for a Blake Koram touchdown.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Yeah, that's what I'm looking.
Speaker 5 (09:54):
For, absolutely.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
I mean this is always like I always find like
these are the and and we'll see this with Andy
Reid too if the Chiefs end up resting their starters too.
But this is one of those great like again like
organizational games, like you remember the Baker game a couple
of years ago, where he shows up on like Wednesday
and then wins Thursday Night Football knowing like four plays,
you know. And I think that this is one of
(10:15):
those things where watching Jimmy light it up is just
proof of concept. It's proof of process, right, and you
can't sit everybody, but you know, having your backup quarterback
come in and win a game against you know, one
of the better defensive coordinators in the NFL, certainly in
the division, is like one of those like, yeah, look
at all the things we can do, and it's things
that people don't keep an eye on but I think
are really important.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yeah, I'm excited for this game. It's like, really I was.
It was a little bit of a nail biter and
was like to see sort of also get give the
offense an opportunity to like really click too. Like I
think everyone hopefully will play like a couple snaps, depending.
I'm not sure what's going to go that way, but
it'll be fun to have a last game at so
Far before a wildcard game at SOFI.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
The following week, which will be great.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
So I'm excited to see how it all shakes out
and who the Rams will take on in the wildcard round.
Connor before I let you go, it's time for the
ram jam, where I asked my guests each the same
three questions, describe your perfect day start to finish.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
Oh, I actually had it a couple of days ago.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
It was really nice waking up and having like a
good cup of coffee, having like I cleaned off the
like it cleaned up the kitchen a little bit the
day before, you know, and you just wake up into
like sort of sanity. And then I would say, going
to the gym and going swimming and riding the bike.
(11:39):
And then that day I also went for a run
with one of my best friends and was.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Just kind side, okay, chill out.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
But that's like you know when you're old, like, oh.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
I love like having a protein shake and get a like, no,
I don't.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
And then I went on a seven mile run.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
I just I don't like lifting weights. I just like
being outside, you know, or like and you know, riding.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
My bike for a little seven mile hike.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
And then and then coming home and having the rest
of the day just to hang out with my kids
and listen to them just talk about whatever because they're ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
You know.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
Yeah, that's cool, you know.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
That's that's the best.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Yeah, wish celebrity would you like to switch lives with
for one day?
Speaker 3 (12:23):
And why.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
This is a good one.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
I've been thinking a lot about this since I saw
your email, and I will say, like, lately, for some reason,
my Instagram algorithm has been spammed with a bunch of
mom influencers, okay, and like they all have like stealthy
secret childcare and like an army of people that will
like do everything for them, and they all have like
(12:49):
gigantic homes and like these coffee machines that like probably
cost ten thousand dollars and personal trainers. And it's like,
I wonder what that would be like, just for one day,
to just be like put on a conveyor belt and
just carry it across the finish line.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
You know.
Speaker 4 (13:04):
Yeah, it would be kind of nice, Like it's super
and then and then I get to go on Instagram
and be like I'm better than you and everything.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
You know, Like that would be kind of fun, you know.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, Yeah, we'll unpack your algorithm later offline. Lastly, iced
coffee on a snowy day or hot coffee in a heatwave.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
Iced Coffee twenty four seven three sixty five no matter what,
I'm man every day perfect.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
You're the best. Hey, and Jammy's out there. We'll start
a gofund me. Maybe we can get Connor a really
nice coffee machine year.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
I have one, but these people have bet you know,
there's stuff that I've never even seen before.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
You know, I don't know. It blows my mind.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Connor, thank you so much for hanging out. And I'm
waiting for you to be on the cover of Sports
Illustrated and a Bikini next.
Speaker 5 (13:49):
Year, talk about things nobody ever wants to see.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Great to see you you too.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
There, he goes, Thanks Connor for hanging out. That does
it for this week's Ricky's ramjam are NFC West champs.
But that doesn't mean we don't need you all to
show up on Sunday to beat the Hawks. Happy New Year, jammies,
and I'll see you Sunday. Until then, let's rim a
