Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is my recital. I think it's very vital. That's
right on top to around, that's right on time.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
It's chick game.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
It's my favorite time of the week when I get
to catch up with coach Matt Doherty. It is a
pleasure to have you on the program once again. We
are back together and better than ever. How you doing
their coach.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Ah doing great, man doing great. Thanks for having me on, Brett.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
It's my pleasure. Absolutely, it's absolutely my pleasure. Let's let's
take a look at a couple of different things here.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Number one, certainly a huge development with the President of
the United States going over to UH to get the
hostages rescued and and the certain change that we're hoping for.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
But we have to wait and see how this is
gonna go.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Your reaction, your thoughts to what it is that we
saw just in these last days.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Yeah, it's pretty impressive the fact that Trump could connect
and leverage the power of the United States, and I
think he showed it by bombing and Iran nuclear site
and also taking out some drug running boats that he's
(01:21):
not afraid right to use the power that we have.
But through the power comes peace, and I think that
white the white hat, which is America and Trump is
leveraging that and shows it off enough that people respect him.
And then the ability to connect with all these different
(01:46):
what thirty countries to come together in the Middle East
to come to this peace treaty is really amazing. And
this takes a lot of effort and energy, which I'm
so I'm amazed at his level of energy. I mean
(02:07):
as as a as a man and you know what,
seventies to do the things that he does all day long,
every day at such a high level is truly amazing.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
So when from from your perspective visiting with coach Matt Doherty,
from your perspective, uh, is this going to be a
one and done or do you feel like he's going
to have to be involved.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
In this moving forward?
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (02:35):
On a on a on a regular basis.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Well, I think with anything you know, and I say
this in in my executive coaching practice, Uh, you know,
I relate so many things to sports. You know, when
when you know Dean Smith or Roy Williams or Nick
Saban or Mike Cresski at the beginning of the season,
they talk about, you know, what is success us look like?
(03:01):
And you know we're going to go into, you know,
a hostile territory, whether it be at North Carolina, like
the first day of practice, all right, our goal is
to win the ACC championship and win a national championship. Well,
to do that, we have to train. We can't just
talk about it once and not revisit it. You can't
just say the first day of practice, hey, we're going
(03:25):
to go into Durham and beat Duke at Duke and
let's run through some drills and put in our offense
and defense and I'll meet you in four months in
Durham and we'll win. You know, it takes repetition, accountability.
You know. The thing that always made me nervous as
(03:47):
a coach is when I had a big lead at
halftime or I was on a winning streak, because I
was afraid that people would let their guard down. And
one of my favorite coaching quotes is from Jeff Van Gundy,
and he said, do not accept in victory what you
would not in defeat. Right, So what does that mean.
It means the process, It means accountability. It means repetition, repetition, repetition,
(04:13):
and just because things are going well doesn't mean you
can take your foot off the gas or your eye
off the price.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Hugely important. So how do you how do you assess
the upcoming season?
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Here?
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Coach? It's going to be here before we know it.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
What are you?
Speaker 1 (04:29):
What are you feeling about this?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah? You know what's weird today? When I was playing
and when I was coaching, October fifteenth was the official
start of practice.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
How about that?
Speaker 2 (04:42):
And it was so it's such a great day and
it's etched in my memory, in my heart, my soul
because when I played, it was the day we ran
the mile and for time and if you got if
you made your time, you got out of sprints and
you got heat dessert at the team meal. It was
(05:02):
the day where everyone I had hope for a great
season and you got to put on that practice uniform
or you got to put on the game jersey for
the pitchers, and you know, the shoes, and you know,
just the energy and the weather, you know, the changing
of the seasons, the little crisper good good uh, you know,
(05:25):
wearing sweats into the office and really focusing on what's ahead.
What does this season look like? I have no freaking
idea because there's so much change, you know, with the
transfer portal and the ni L. You don't know what
(05:48):
rosters look like like, I couldn't. I couldn't tell you
who I think the starting five would be at North
Carolina this year.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Well, that's fascinating, that's fascinating, coach. He's already final question
for you, actually one and a half questions for you.
Number one, is Belichick long for this job?
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Well, listen, the dudes whatever. I hate to do the
ages and thing, but you know, just do the math.
At seventy two, he's not long for Yeah, you know,
probably not long for the job. However, however, listen, he's
a victim of his own success. So the hype was
(06:32):
over the top, right, The coach cannot step on the
flip field and throw the ball, catch the ball, make
the tackle. And to his credit, he has not thrown
his team under the bus. They are like seventy new players.
And when he got involved late in the recruiting process,
(06:54):
you know, he's recruiting you know, secondary level players, five
star play. So he doesn't have great players. All right,
I can say that. He can't say that. He shouldn't
say that, all right, he's talking about the process. Yes, listen,
mac Brown in his first two years. The first time
around went one in ten, one in ten, and then
(07:17):
he got the team into the top ten in the
country and a year or two later. It takes time,
and people want a microwave success. Now. You can't do
that when you're building large organizations, which a football team
is a large organization, right.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Great, great stuff, coach. So where do people go if
they want to get coached by you the coach?
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Well, thank you. I actually refreshed my website nice and
so I would love people to go to darity coaching
dot com. That's d H e r t y coaching
dot com.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Great stuff. Always appreciate your perspective.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Coach.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Thank you so much for being here and I can't
wait to catch up with you again soon.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
My friend. Yeah yeah, tell Isaac to call me next time.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
You got it.
