Speaker 1 (00:03):
here we are wrapping season for up above the buzz.
It's been a great season, and I really want to
express my gratitude again to to, um, our producer, Ryan
from sucker Fish Media. So Roe is here joining me
this season. You made it back
Speaker 2 (00:22):
on my way to Europe when you were recording last time,
so I didn't get on the mic, which is a shame,
But congratulations on season four. Can you believe we've got
to season four?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
No, I actually can't go. It's been a bit nuts. Yeah,
so good. So much, so much inspiration. So much gold.
And I think, you know, we're now at the point where,
you know, I'll see someone at a networking function which
I think I told you the other day, and they
have come up to me and they've said, Hey, it
was really good to hear that. Um, and this was
(00:50):
actually in particular, um, Emily Osmond from the modern marketing collective.
What an incredible ray of sunshine she is. Um, but,
you know, she also trouble has has her troubles, you know,
here she is with a young baby trying to fulfil
her vision of her business But then also, you know,
it's needing to to be mum
(01:11):
a hands on mum and and this person who had
come up to me was like, Oh, it was so
good to hear that, you know, she's experiencing the same
things that that I
Speaker 2 (01:22):
do. And it's so nice because that I know from,
you know, putting this podcast together with you four seasons ago. Um,
that was what you wanted to do, right? You wanted
to highlight that. There's 1000 successful people out there that
seem to be doing it so easy. But, you know,
there's
and down to every task that you
Speaker 1 (01:40):
100% and actually, I think, you know, there were a
few in the season who were really open and and
quite vulnerable around mental health. Um, and their struggles with it.
I know. Um I know our local business feature Lyndal
Daley from daily health. She, you know, was quite open about,
(02:02):
you know, her struggles with it,
and then we had, you know, Jane Clark from Imagine Revolution.
Also a local feature.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
I love her. What a what a Like you talk
about people. That purpose is bigger than money and and
what not and she's just she I could have just
hugged her. I think we did it.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
I think to be fair, I think I pretty much
do that with every guest. I come off such a
high and want to give them a big hug. But yeah,
Jane especially. But she
also, you know, shared with us her moments of self doubt,
and she was just so open. And you know, what
Speaker 2 (02:36):
a creative person, what a loving person. Just someone that
wants to make the world a better place through what
she does. She's making a difference,
Speaker 1 (02:45):
and she's fighting through all her own demons to make
that happen for her wider community.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
And I think people that express that and talk about
the mental health aspect, I think it's just so helpful
to people
Speaker 1 (02:57):
100% 100%. Yeah. And, um, you know, when I think
of that, also, I think of Mira. Claudia, I'm just
thinking of the locals actually at the minute. And Mira,
who who created her tribe and as a coach, um,
you know, she had enormous strengths but also was so
open and honest about, you know, where she she was
(03:19):
struggling in from a mental health, you know, perspective. So
I think, um, that's certainly one big theme, and it's
so nice to just blow it out of the water
and let everyone know that this shit happens, you know?
Speaker 2 (03:32):
And it's and you can work through it and and
you can still be a success. And it's OK. I
think that's I think that's all really important. It's not.
It's not the barrier that you think it is.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
I think, No, you just need to work through it.
You need to work through it.
Um, we think about, you know, actually, I was just
thinking of Mirra and then the the A nice, sick
way in that is actually strength, you know, she was
quite remarkable and in, you know, single Mom and and
she started this whole community. She's so grounded, um, and strong.
(04:08):
But she also talks about finding your strength. You know,
she coaches people on really finding what your strength is
and how you can apply that in a professional
professional world. And then strength also comes to mind when
I think of Cassidy Kriger, right. What an incredible story
of that Multiple sclerosis diagnosed at 23. She's got all
(04:30):
these dreams of being, you know, like a You know,
this huge, you know, filmmaker and successful actress, which she
actually is. Mind you, that's exactly what she's doing.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Well, yeah, to find success in that space. I think
just doing it is a success. But she's just, um
the way she holds herself, and
she just looks like that classic Hollywood incredibly talented, incredibly
open as well and and again just just bashing through
those barriers that life's put in front of her and
doing it in style. And
Speaker 1 (05:00):
she had them from a really young age, too. And
what I love actually about her story to one of
the many things I love is about how her mum
was just her number one supporter, and, you know, she
couldn't leave the house to go to school. But she
could leave the house to go to acting.
And, you know, people are asking her mum well, how
come she can't go to school and her mum just
stands right behind her and goes, It is what it is.
(05:22):
You tell me
Speaker 2 (05:25):
what I wish her all the success. I'll be interested
to follow her career as she goes, it's gonna be
It's gonna be a wild
Speaker 1 (05:31):
one. No, I So, too. Then we, um actually, I,
I loved this story. I felt so inspired. This was
our seasoned, um, business owner Peter Jones.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Oh, my God,
Has he done everything?
Speaker 1 (05:46):
A firecracker,
Speaker 2 (05:47):
right? But also just so giving. Like he's just been
in that industry and done it all, and but will
just sit down with us and just take it right
back to the raw basics. What makes him get out
of bed every day still, and building his teams up
and making other people successful? And he's just at a
point of his life where he just wants to give
(06:08):
it all back. And
and I love that
Speaker 1 (06:10):
I love that, too. And I love his commitment to
that next generation. But
Speaker 2 (06:15):
also he's just he's just a guy with energy who
believes in himself and and just makes it happen. And
he's talking to the people at the who we would
consider at the top of the echelon, right, the Gil
McLaughlin of the world in the a F world and
and you know, I think you said it in your
intro from memory that if you've been to a big
event around Melbourne, you've probably seen his work like whether it's,
(06:39):
you know, the VCR or Spring Carnival. And so So
he's working with the biggest brands, the biggest personalities, and
you could just see him at at the negotiation table,
being himself and just wowing everybody and just backing himself
in and just going
just agreeing to Yes, we'll make this happen and then
(06:59):
going and making it happen like
Speaker 1 (07:01):
that's exactly what he said to remember. There was that first,
I think it was his very first parade because he
was approached to do the parade, and he's like, Yeah, yeah,
Speaker 2 (07:13):
no. Well, he is a legend of the industry and and, uh,
that's a That's a must list episode. Actually, you haven't
heard it. Go back and listen to.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
I agree. I agree. Then we had our two Melissa,
both from the beauty, um, industry. We had Melissa Peters,
who kicked off our season one Maoris cosmetics very driven
woman from the counters of Chanel and and BMW And
then to go. No, I'm gonna do this myself now.
And wow, I loved her drive. I loved her,
(07:47):
um, you know, grounded her commitment. She was no nonsense.
She was absolutely no nonsense. And she's been very successful
in creating a really wonderful brand she's collaborated with, You know, um,
Doctor Lynn, the fertility queen here in Melbourne. Um, and yeah, again,
Speaker 2 (08:08):
just her passion and just the way she's she had
a vision in her head and a product in her head.
And instead of saying with these
brilliant brands and working with the BMW S and the
Chanels of the world, which feels good to your community
because your community goes Oh, that must be special. She
left it all behind and did her own thing
again. There's huge, big, huge bravery in that and and
(08:31):
huge kudos. And it's all it's all starting to pay dividends. Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Absolutely. And then Melissa I loved her
Speaker 2 (08:41):
story. She was just a ray of French
Speaker 1 (08:44):
style grace. Um, she was so humble. She was so grounded.
She was so honest.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Um, but you could just imagine her at a French event,
like on the stairs with a champagne and a cigarette
in my hand. And, darling, I think she was just
that beautiful person that you just you know, don't be offended, Melissa.
But just on the slight, eccentric side, and you're just
like you're warm to them really quickly and just go. Oh,
(09:12):
you're fun.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
So much fun,
Much fun. And I think what, they too both of
those you know, two had going into that industry, too,
was a huge risk factor. So, you know, it blew
me away. Melissa ob saying, You know, I just, um
you know, just sold up the house and and, you know,
moved with the family. I know it like, look how
(09:37):
it's paid.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Well, this is how people have massive success, right? They're
just willing to put it all on the line and
just go. No, let's make this happen. And
Speaker 1 (09:45):
like she said, because it all was on the line,
that was like, It is all on the line. So
I've actually got no option. It has to be successful.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Burn the boats. Do you remember that quote she used?
So I can't remember. I think it was. Anyway, there's
a quote that says,
um, once you get to your destination, you burn the
boat so you can't go back. So the only way
you can, um move is forward and be a success
because there's no way back. And that's what she did.
And and the product is
Speaker 1 (10:16):
incredible. It's incredible love for, um, you know, it's it's
globally recognised. She's working on, you know, expanding out her,
um, you know, her collection. But
Speaker 2 (10:26):
then you look at her and you go, Well, that
was always gonna happen. Like, look at you like,
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Yeah, it's just
Speaker 2 (10:32):
the kind of person that just makes
Speaker 1 (10:35):
absolutely, and inspired them by some real greats along the way.
You know, Jean Paul and Picasso, you know, had years
at the NGV. Just yeah,
Speaker 2 (10:46):
and never.
You know, when you launch a new product, you go,
I'll start down here and then hopefully one day, I'll
be up at the she would never talk down her
product or she'd never discount it or never like it
is what it is. And it plays in that you know,
that real extravagant space luxury
Speaker 1 (11:04):
space.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
And she believes it. And and it is,
Speaker 1 (11:10):
Yeah, absolutely.
You know, Then we talk about, you know, I think, um,
another quite common theme and and and comments throughout the
season was your deep connection to your why, You know, um,
and and they've all
connected with that in in different ways, and some they've
(11:30):
connected when they've been in their lows and others, you know,
connected more to that feeling and that in that high, um,
and that's a real you know, piece of advice. Actually,
that I've taken on board personally is to really look
at you know what I offer as a business and go.
Why am I doing this? Um,
Speaker 2 (11:50):
and what was the answer for
Speaker 1 (11:51):
you? Yeah. Look, I think, um
Speaker 2 (11:53):
because mine's always to pay the rent I've done. I've
done a lot of work on my why, and I'm like, Well,
it's to live I don't like so So I know
that it's very big out there at the moment in
the self health world. Have a why have a have
a why why are you doing this and make all
the hard work worthwhile? But my why is to I
guess if you break it down further, it's family and
(12:14):
all that kind of stuff. But essentially it is to
live and live in a way that I want to
be comfortable
Speaker 1 (12:19):
in that.
That's it. I think. Yeah, my wife. Certainly, you know,
is there's a financial aspect of it, too. But I
also want to feel really good, you know, like, yeah,
like making a difference. Like with this podcast series. You know,
it's it's a lot of work, Um, and the way
I do it in particular because, you know, we we
sit here together and it's a It's an old school production.
(12:43):
I don't do it over Zoom and and they are
quite long episodes. So there's a lot of work, but
the pleasure I get out of it and and being
able to share, you know, these these amazing inspirational stories
and then to have, you know, people come to you
and say, You know how much they appreciate it and
and it's certainly ticking the box for them,
(13:04):
you know, going back to that original, you know, vision
of it is is really satisfying. So when you
Speaker 2 (13:11):
say that to press you on that, so what is
your why for doing the podcast? Do
Speaker 1 (13:15):
you think the why for doing the podcast is to
make people or to to support people in their business
journey with other stories of success and and helping
realise that it's not all a bed of roses, that
there are the downtimes. There are the challenges. But you know,
these people that we we interview, make it through those
(13:38):
downtimes and they all do it in really different ways. So,
um you know, being able to share those stories and
the variety of those you know stories and the ways
that they do, it
brings me a lot of satisfaction. Personally. Obviously it's feeding
something in, you know, in me. But then to be
able to make a difference to other people's lives and
(13:59):
their business journey, that's real special. All right,
Speaker 2 (14:04):
I'll let you off the hook. That's a pretty good one.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Thanks. And finally, Reeva bother my goodness, like
crazy
Speaker 2 (14:17):
the amount of notes you had to take on 100
Speaker 1 (14:19):
percent 100%. And I don't even know if I could
get many words. And to be honest, he was on
fire and so generous with all his information. Like all
his experience, he just could not give enough in that episode.
And I think it's a really great episode for people
to listen to who you know might be going into,
(14:40):
you know, creating a product and and even on the
e-commerce side of it.
Um, but also, how you do it like, yes.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
And he worked at WOOLLIES and then found What do
you call them? Biochemists and all that stuff. But he
took him a year.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Yes, and and he was very driven by his wife
because he had awful, awful acne. And he was really
embarrassed about, you know, going,
um, out and about. And
Speaker 2 (15:10):
so he had a problem that he needed to find
a problem that hasn't been so
Speaker 1 (15:17):
That's like a marketing, You know, when When we do
our deep dive discovery sessions with clients, we say, What
problem are you solving in the market right now? Um,
Speaker 2 (15:27):
yeah, he was amazing. He was He was You could
see his mind working 1000. He's gonna be that guy.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
Well, already, you know, their their business is just, you know,
going absolute gangbusters. And they, too, are expanding their range
because of this huge success that they've had.
Yeah, Look, wrapping up such a variety of, um, you know,
business stories here experiencing all you know, all types of success.
(15:55):
You know, we talk about what are your measures of
success and and it's really so varied in amongst this
this season, which is really wonderful to to see. Um,
I've really loved loved this season, and I'm yeah, looking
forward to
getting on with the next season. But, um, yeah, thank
you to all our guests. Thank you to To and
Speaker 2 (16:17):
yeah, well done, Karen. That was an awesome season to
be involved in. And we look forward to keeping the
inspiration coming.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Absolutely. Stay tuned.
