Speaker 1 (00:20):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
The text line is golden. Following the Kyle Larson clip
with Julian Edelman where Kyle Larson said he liked Talladega Knights,
but he really felt like it made NASCAR look bad.
And he's not the first guy to say this, And
I truly don't get it. Like Kyle, I'm sure you're
a really nice guy. No offense intended, but I think
that's such an insane take. Nobody who ever watched Talladega

(00:42):
Knights thought it was a documentary. I don't understand that.
AJ said, Hey, KB, the longest yard really made football
players look bad too. Yeah, who else said that? Somebody
said Cole Trickle was passing dudes in Days of Thunder
like he was on I eighty five. I think somebody
sent that a minute ago. I dropping the hammer. Yeah,
he's like he's on ninety five. Happy Gilmour really did

(01:02):
damage to the reputation of the PGA Tour. I'm sure
I don't get that take.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
I really agree Roading Garter gave a bad taste to
the Chicago Cubs. I mean, a little kid playing for
the Chicago Cubs as an eight.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Year old, Like, what the hell are they doing?

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Well?

Speaker 2 (01:16):
That's the bicycle. Herd said, Rookie of the Year. You
mean to tell me a teenager can't break his arm
and then throw as hard as Roger Clemens.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
I news to me. I mean, and what the hell
or the Minnesota Twins doing. Let the owner have the
eleven year old take over to team and his will.
Oh man, I have that's the one that I need
to rewatch so great. I haven't seen that one. Oh man,
it's been a very very long time. I wonder if
I was wondering the other day, is that one? Is
that one good for kids? Little big League? By the ways,

(01:45):
what we're talking about, absolutely yes, it's It's a top
five baseball movie of all time for me.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Michael said, Space Jam really ruined my view of the NBA.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
What do you mean these mon stars could take their
basketball abilities.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
I don't know what Kyle Arson's talking about. Maybe Carlo
Metz knows. The CW studio host and of course he's
back with the Panthers here in the preseason. Was taking
in Panthers practice yesterday against the Browns. Carla Met's back
with us on the hotline. Carla, what's going on?

Speaker 3 (02:12):
How you been I'm doing good? Yeah, both preparing for
a race and for this preseason game against the Browns
tomorrow night. My plate is pretty full as yours is.
I'm sure. I'm sure too.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, you and I are both. It'said this time of
year for us. We're grateful for it, we get all that,
but it is a lot. Now I do to get
you to weigh in real quick. Kyle Larson said that
he doesn't like that Talladagan knightes. He feels like, you know,
makes makes NASCAR drivers kind of look bad. I don't
get it, Carla, we all know it's not a documentary.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Well, I'm gonna say, I mean, I think that was
also around the time where you know, slapstick comedies were
just getting produced, you know, just numerous ones, right, I mean,
that was the same time that Step Brothers and all
of those little peral movies got made. I think the
biggest thing, at least from a NASCAR perspective where they're
coming from, I think is like when you think of Nascar,

(02:58):
like what movie pops into your head? And I think
for a lot of people it probably is Taladay to night.
That doesn't necessarily mean that you're taking it serious or
not serious, but there's just not that many. I mean,
there's some good racing movies out there, but there's just
not you know, outside of Days of Thunder and some
other ones. You know, there's just not the ones that
you really like bring to the forefront of your mind
as opposed to maybe some other sports. Maybe that's where

(03:20):
he's coming from. I'm trying to play Devil's advocate. Yeah,
I definitely don't think it. You know, it's definitely not
a representation of what NASCAR is. But again, you know,
any kind of attention in that area I think can
be good attention.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yeah, listen, I'm with you, and you're right to play
Devil's advocate. That's fine. It makes for a fun conversation.
But there is one guy on the text line, Michigan Shawn,
who just said Kyle Larson is completely right. The other
several hundred texts disagree. But anyway, we'll leave that alone
for right now. Let me go to football. We'll come
back to racing for a second, because if we have
a lot of Panthers fans chomping at the bit to
hear about how the boys look out there on the

(03:57):
field and thoughts on what we've seen so far, you know,
you and I were standing similar place yesterday watching practice.
We all had a better view of the Panthers offense
than we did of the Panthers defense. But from what
you saw yesterday, what'd you think what stood out to you?

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah, I mean, I've liked the way that they were
moving the ball, you know, I think that's kind of
a big focal point for the preseason right now, is
just this tempo of offense and how big of strides
they've taken from year one to year two under this
system with Dave Canalis. They certainly, I think, you know,
just watching them look more comfortable in what they're doing.
And that says a lot too, because they've got some

(04:32):
other some new pieces on offense still that are you know,
just in year one of the system. But I think
it's just a veteran presence around that. Thinking about Bryce
Young being more confident. You've got Adam feeling out there,
JT Sanders a tight end making big strides this year
in the system too. So I think there's just a
comfortability with this offense that makes you excited about watching it.

(04:54):
And then to you know, Bryce Shung kind of said
after you know, the practice yesterday, there was an element
of going up against the Browns defense, the first defense
they've seen outside of their own all of training camp,
that you know, it felt good to see exactly what
the execution of the offense looked like when you when
you're putting it up against the defense that's not as
familiar with you. So I'm super excited about seeing, you know,

(05:18):
maybe these first couple of drives tomorrow night to see
what the first team actually looks like. But yeah, I feel,
you know, pretty good about where the offense is, even
though I think, you know, there's some questions of some
battles on that side.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Still, Yeah, and look, the offense is the big story
because they drafted a wide receiver Bryce Is in year three,
it's critical. They brought in an additional thousand yard back,
they brought the entire offensive line back, all the things
that you already know. But I think maybe the best
thing that came out of practice yesterday, Carla, is the
reports that the defense had a really good day against

(05:55):
the run for Cleveland. Now, again, it's joint practice. We
should not we should be very careful not to try
to scraple eight too much. But you and I both
watched that defense every Sunday last year. To get reports
that the run defense was stout yesterday, that's great news.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
That's great news. And especially I think just because there
are so many questions and so many guys on defense
that we haven't seen and honestly just I think guys
that haven't played with other guys, right, I mean, think
about Derek Brown and dj Wanham never got a chance
to line up against each other last season on the defense,
and so to kind of maybe see that take place

(06:31):
as we get through the preseason. You know, I don't
know how aggressive they're going to be with the dB there,
but I think, yeah, just knowing that you've got those
pieces in place, but then to know that you've got
some guys that can actually stop the run and those
edge rushers that they brought in, I think there's a
lot of competition in that room that we maybe haven't
gotten a chance to see because the practice fields and

(06:53):
the way that things are set up, Like, I just
I feel like we haven't gotten our eyes on it yet.
So that's going to be really fun to see tomorrow.
And I mean and going up against the Browns offense
tomorrow that you know, I have just as many question marks,
at least for this preseason run. A lot of people
are going to be interested to see Shador and to
see that the ground game and what they've got going

(07:13):
on that side of the ball. But a great opportunity
for this defense to get some reps under their belt
and working together, and we'll see how quick, how quick
they are, because that's that's the big thing that also,
you know, you look at the defensive line too, it's
just bigger bodies this year, and that's going to make
a huge difference.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
You know, as far as I go on the offensive side.
Specific to Tedero McMillan, I wanted to bring this up
with you too. You know, he's a top ten pick
and he's listed as a starter on the depth chart.
I do think he can make an impact at some
point this year, but I am I'm fully prepared for
him to start slow. I hope he doesn't, and you know,
it'd be great if he didn't. But he's still a

(07:51):
rookie and he has had a little bit of an
up and down training camp. A lot of good but
some things that need to be polished. Where are you
in terms of expectations and how much he impacts this offense, say,
in the first four games of the season, Well, I
think what.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
We've seen in practice so far is just that he
has the ability to make that splash play or that
one hand to grab, you know, or just you know,
get up in the air and make a play when
maybe there wasn't one. We've seen a little bit of
offscript that he's been successful on. And I think I
will say, you know, I do expect him to have
those plenty of rookie moments this season, but I think

(08:25):
his talent and his ability is going to outweigh those.
And also you start listening to guys like Mike Jackson,
you know, going up against him every day, and j. C.
Horn certainly, these guys that he's really kind of learning
from on you know, going up against on the defense.
But they're saying, you know, we're able to teach him,
and he's able to be corrected, and you know, we're

(08:45):
telling him something one week and the next week he's
fixing it. So I do definitely believe he's going to
have those rookie moments, but how quickly is he going
to move on from them? I have more confidence, I
think in the fact that he's you know a humble
enough guy to know that that he can have the
confidence to go make a play but also correct what
he needs to in a quick amount of time. And
I think that's what coaches are seeing from him too.

(09:08):
So we may see those mistakes, but just expect him
to hopefully turn it around pretty quickly if we do.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Carlo Met's with us here on the hotline talking Panthers
and now talking racing Iowa on Sunday, the Iowa Corn
three fifty powered Bythanol. It was it was a good race,
was certainly for William Byron, a dramatic win. And you know,
the fuel mileage strategy there at the end was really
impressive stuff. He got one hundred and forty laps out
of that final tank of gas and the caution certainly

(09:34):
helped too. But William Byron wins again. What stood out
from Iowa?

Speaker 3 (09:38):
Yeah, I mean, I think you know, there were a
lot of different takes after this race. I think it
was certainly good for William Byron, who's been on the
cusp of another win. You know, his only other win
daytona five hundred to start the season, but he's been
really close before, so to see him kind of carry
through and actually punch that win in. I think that
was big for him, for his crew chief, Ruddy Fugel,

(09:59):
for his team as a hole, to know that they still,
you know, can accomplish more this season. But as far
as you know, a shorter track, we're still getting used
to Iowa, We're still getting used to the characteristics of
this track, and and a lot of people were pretty
critical of this being another fuel mileage race, which just
doesn't seem right when you're talking about a short track

(10:19):
in NASCAR. So yeah, I mean, I thought it was
a good race for what it was, but I still
think that there's a lot to be said about, you know,
the product of racing when it comes to this car
and you know, are we wanting it to be a
fuel mileage race when we're going to a short track.
I think a lot of people in the industry don't

(10:40):
think that's, you know, necessarily the best case for the
longevity of the sport. But I certainly know that NASCAR
is probably, you know, having those conversations even this week,
trying to improve the product as well.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
Any quick thoughts on Sam Mayer winning the Exfinity Series
race that was competitive, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
I mean, the hosts Factories first win in the Exfinity
Series since they kind of rebranded from Stuart Haas Racing,
and that was really big for them. It was big
for Ford right, Chevrolet has dominated in the Efinity Series
this year. I think they've led over like seventy six
percent of the lapse this season, so that was really
big for that camp. And then of course Sam Mayor,

(11:17):
he was already you know, doing really well in the
point standings, he just didn't have that win, and he
had been close before a lot of top fives, a
lot of consistency just this season in the top fifteen,
so I'm not surprised by it at all that he
finally got that win and you know went ahead and
locked himself into the playoffs. Now he's only sixteen points

(11:38):
out of the regular season because he has done so
well in the point standing. So the battle for the
regular championship on the Xinity Series side right now between
Justin Augar and Connor Zilich, they're both tied at the
top right now, Sam Mayor sixteen points below. So as
we're nearing the end of the regular season for that series,
it'll be really fun, I think, to keep up with
who's where in the points, and the same could be

(12:00):
said for the Cup Series because that's pretty tight as well.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Well, glad you said that, because I think we're down
to what six races left in the regular season? Is it?
Is it three? I'm sorry?

Speaker 1 (12:07):
Three?

Speaker 2 (12:07):
What am I thinking? Three in the regular season and
it starts at Watkins Glenn this weekend. They're going back
to the Glen. Just your general expectations, what you're looking
for and who's most desperate for a win.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
Yeah, I mean I think there's a lot of people
in the field. If you're talking Cup Series, I mean, yeah,
you are looking at that regular season battle. I think
it's William Byron, Chase Elliott ending up losing the regular
season lead this past week, so you got the Hendrick
Pamp up top and certainly some other guys that are
going to be vying for that those extra points right
that you get if you get the regular season championship.

(12:41):
But Watkins Glenn really fun race track. I mean, it
is a road course, but it's really not like anything
else that that we go to. I've heard a lot
of guys this week talk about how you know, typically
for road courses, you want to lean heavily on the brakes,
and it's how you use the brakes that help you
go around this track. This track has been known as
kind of the super Speedway of road courses, so speed

(13:04):
actually plays a bigger factor here. So a lot of
guys that are strong at the ovals might perform a
little bit better here. And that's saying a lot. Because
you're going to have Connor Zvillach and Shane van Gisbergen
both in the Cup Series and the Xinity Series this weekend.
We know how good those guys are at road courses.
But again, like I said, don't be surprised if you
see some other guys performing well and possibly sneak a

(13:27):
win away from those guys.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
All right, Carla Metz covering NASCAR, the Panthers and more,
and as her ex bio says, fluent in Southern vernacular,
in case you haven't picked up on that, hanging out
with us her regular Thursday conversation, although a little bit
later this week. We appreciate you as always. We'll see
you soon, all right.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
