Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's talk about that and everything else going on this
weekend with Chip Patterson, Cbsports dot Com, CBS Sports Network,
on your television sets, and of course the Cover three
podcast Talk in College Football. He's back with us for
a Friday conversation, Chip, what do you think about this
UVA Florida State matchup tonight here on a Friday night?
Does Florida State roller? Does UVA put a scare into them?
Speaker 2 (00:20):
UVA can definitely put a scare into them. I don't
know if they're going to be able to win the game,
because I don't.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Know if UVA is going to be able to get stopped.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
They are getting healthier on defense, but I still don't
think that against quality competition, Virginia's defense is to be trusted.
And like, let's be honest, Florida States far more than
quality competition. The way that Gus Malsan has this team
running the football like they are potentially one of the
most dangerous and diverse rushing attacks in the entire country.
(00:47):
Now they've been doing it against Tomato Cans for the
most part ever since they played Alabama.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
But I look at this game and I think that
it is the spot of all spots.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Right, You're it's a Friday night, You're going up to Charlottesville. Well,
you've got Miami on deck at home, you know, just
sort of everything that's going to be buzzing, pointing and building.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Back in that direction. So can this defense be locked in?
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Because I do think that that's the one part that
we have not gotten a chance to see Ty Simpson.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
In the opener. I just thought it was a little
bit off. I think Alabama had.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
A lot of chances that they didn't capitalize on. So
I don't know how good this defense really is yet.
That's what I'm trying to figure out. That's clearly what
will be on display as they have to defend Shaman Morris.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
So can they put a scare into them? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Because I think they can score some points, so I
think they can win. My answer is no, because I
don't think they can get stopped.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Okay, if if Florida State, you know, takes care of
business tonight and we get Miami Florida State, you know,
one of the biggest matchups in that series next weekend.
I know we're kind of looking ahead here a little bit,
I am, anyway, but that appears to already be the
game of the year in the ACC. How massive will
that game be next weekend?
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Massive enough that the Cover three podcast is going to
be live from downtown tallahad Let's get on Friday.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Oh that's huge. Look, look, this is gonna.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Be a boss Like I think that the both of
those programs just sort of like the arc and what
they've been building to and the journey, it's gonna be potentially,
you know, one of two matchups that we.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
See the suit between those teams.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
So I am I am fired up for it. But again,
like we have seen, Miami have to play better teams
than Florida State. That's what I do think makes the
UVA game so key is because now we get.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
To learn a little bit more about.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
The seminoles, which will inform all of our analysis, discussion
and picks going into the game against Miami.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
So let me stay in the ACC for a second.
A rather quiet weekend in this conference after tonight, but
number eighteen Georgia Tech does go to Winston Salem to
face Wake Forest tomorrow. You know, Jake Dickard and company
a little better than I thought after Week one against Kennesaw,
but I still expect Georgia Tech to go. If they're
and going to win tomorrow, what's the How real is
the path in your mind for Georgia Tech to make
(03:05):
the College football Playoffs?
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Well, I mean as a as a eleven to one
team or as an at large you've got a shot,
which is something that's very possible given their path as
an ACC champion, which is something that I think is
possible given the quality of the team. So it is
I would say that I would put Georgia Tech in.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
How about this? You know it's a pie, right, Not.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Everybody from the ACC is all going to have the
same opportunity. I've probably taken a little bit out of
the SMU splice the pie.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Given it to Georgia Tech.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
I might have taken a little bit out of the
Louisville slice of pie just in terms of overall quality
that I've seen from the cards so far this year,
and give that to Georgia Tech. So yeah, I mean
they are in that mix. If it's not going to
be far to State, and if it's not going to
be Miami and you need to grab somebody else from
the ACC.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
To me, there is no question that is the Georgia
Tech yell jacket.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Now I do not think they are dominant enough to
survive a game where they.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Are not playing their best football. I think that they are.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
And this is one thing that is good given the
way that haines King plays football. They are healthy enough
at the backup quarterback position that if Haineskin gets hurt
or needs to rest, Aaron Filow is more than ready
to answer the call right there. So that helps your
chances one hundred percent. But you just got to be
realistic about.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
This because, as I've said a.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Couple of times in a couple of different places, this
is still the Atlantic Coast Conference, the most crabs in
a bucket type league. Anytime anybody has it all going
in their direction, you are liable to get nabbed and
nipped by somebody who jumps up from the bottom of
the conference.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
So that's like, yeah, like, sure of course I can
see it.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
But can Georgie is titant be trusted enough that they're
just going to one hundred percent play to peak efficiency
the rest of the way.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Absolutely not.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
J Patterson cbsports dot Com cover three podcasts Hanging out
with Us here for a front conversation Clemson. The next
time we talk next week will be previewing North Carolina
and Clemson jokes flying this week. That game will be
on ten AM at the Cartoon Network because you know,
the conditions are very different than we thought. But obviously
there's a big picture conversation taking place about both programs,
(05:17):
but Clemson in particular, after this god awful start that
was really unexpected. Where where is Clemson football right now?
Big picture.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Soul searching on a walk about Yeah, I mean they've
they because the thing is, it's got to.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Happen internally, and there's no amount of pointing to the
faces on the walls. There's no amount of, like, you know,
trying to trying to will it into existence. They've got
to go get it done. And I'm curious because Kate.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Klubnet in twenty twenty three looked awful at the beginning
of the year, and.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Clemson started four and four through eight games, but they
want the last four games of the season, including a
win over a ranked Notre Dame team. They beat Kentucky
in the bowl game. They finished nine and four. It
wasn't the double digit.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Wins, but you were like, hey, this Funston team turned
it around.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
I mean, Kyle, honestly, that's the best case scenario that
they just they find something internally, they dig in, they
get some real leadership from that talented group, and they
come out and play.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Because right now, I just I just I.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Don't see it from their quarterback cake club that I
don't see it from the defense that just seems to
be I mean, I mean sometimes I'm like, are they
playing with like ankle weights on? There's just not There's
just not like a pop, There's not an extra step,
They're not just the communication isn't there, The closing speed
isn't always there.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
I just they're in a funk, man, And they can
turn this around. They can you know, finish with a
They can finish this thing.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
From where they're sitting right now, you know, with seven
eight wins on the season, give themselves a chance to
go get nine in the bowl game. But man, they
need somebody to step up, and no one from the outside,
and no one from the outside is going to be
able to do it. And I don't even know if
we can trust anybody from the coaching staff to be
able to do it. This is one that's got to
happen with the players. So it's a real gut check
time for the Tigers.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
All right, Chip, all of us who are die hard
college football fans are faced with a great dilemma tomorrow
evening at seven point thirty, as we'll have both Oregon
Penn State and Alabama Georgia on at the exact same time.
I know you're going to see both of these games
in their entirety, but which game gets preference on the
big TV tomorrow night? Which one gets the audio?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
I'll think that the Penn State Oregon game holds slightly
more significance from the national picture because both Penn State
and Oregon will not have as many opportunities to.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Log huge, like huge wins.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
With playoff implications the way that both Alabama and Georgia will.
There are games left on Alabama schedule. There are games
left on Georgia schedule, multiple games that are going to
be against teams that are at ranked inside the top ten,
the top fifteen, and so on from the College Football
Playoff rankings or the rankings however you want to look
at them. That is not necessarily the case. In fact,
(08:12):
for Penn State, they've got this game against Oregon, They've
got a game at Ohio State, and then depending on
what happens with some other teams in.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
The Big Ten.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
I don't know how many other games there's going to
be for Penn State to be able to get out
there and make a statement other than.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Their win column.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
And Oregon same thing. You know, this was one of
those spots where we looked at it and like, Okay,
this is one of those huge games. If they win it, now,
all of a sudden, they're in this big position. So
I think that that's the one that you say, because
Alabama Georgia is going to.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Be an awesome game and so much fun.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
But I don't think it's I think both those teams
will get more tracks at it. The winner and the
loser both don't come out as different as they were
going in before.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
I let you go. Any thoughts on the Ryder Cup
underway today? Of course, you're opinions have already jumped out
to an early lead and they're the heavy favorites anyway,
But thoughts on what we've seen so far?
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Why was Cam Young ever doubted as a part of
this team. I mean, just like carry in the team,
go Deeks and go acc He's.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Getting it done right now.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
And so with Scottie Scheffler, absolutely shrinking. It's great to
see cam Young rising the occasion.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
All right, we'll see how it plays out. Chip, have
a great weekend brother. We'll talk to you next Friday.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Sounds good. Y'll be well.
