Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right now, we welcome in and welcome back Chip Patterson
of CBS Sports dot Com, CBS Sports Network in the
Cover three podcast, back with us for a Friday conversation. Chip,
I saw you took in the Canes opener last night.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Man, how was that electric? It was? It was? It
was a lot of fun to be back in that building.
And it was a fun game, right, you know, It's
just a little bit nervy there at the end, but
then you get the game winner from Jarvis and then
pour it on. I was, uh, it was. It was
a good one to be in the building for. That's awesome.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
All right, we have limited time. Give me Chip Patterson's
read on the North Carolina situation with Bill Belichick after
a week week's worth of reporting and statements and tons
of speculation. What's you take?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
You're in the big game now here we go? You know,
like this is it's just like where every people have
chosen their sides, right and in the same way that
I felt, and I'm sorry, just gonna get a little vibesy,
but I think you could roll with it. But I
felt that there was a force around on the North
Carolina coaching search that thought if they just spoke Bill
(01:03):
Belichick into existence. Do it happened? Right? Like, if we
just keep talking about it, if we just like, I think,
we can just make this thing happen, And they did successfully.
Now it has not been successful in terms of the
way that it's played out. And now it's like there's
this crew that's just already over it, Like no, absolutely not,
this guy. End has got to end right now. And
(01:25):
so kind of is in the midst of all that
there still is a team, right is? I see Kamori House,
one of the better players on that defense. I see him,
you know, offering up, you know, encouraging sort of messages
on his Twitter account, Like there still are players that
are gonna have to go out to Berkeley, California and
play against the cal Bears coming up next weekend. So
(01:47):
everyone on the outside of that building seems to have
chosen their side where they stand on it, and now
we'll see how it ends up affecting, if at all,
the players on the inside.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Okay, so do you have any I mean, what do
you think of the notion that they could be done
with him before col next week? Because I don't know
that I find that to be truthful, but it has
been reported, and at the very least the conversation would
indicate their extreme displeasure with what they've seen so far.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
I would imagine that I would imagine that the process
is going to be very detail oriented, like this is
the example I've been using. Northwestern, like was sort of
rushed to action to get rid of Pat Fitzgerald, and
the hazing allegations came out, and then Pat Fitzgerald sued
him for every single bit of the buy out and
(02:33):
won the lawsuit. You know, it was like, as a university,
you got to make sure if you're going to take
action on a head coach, that you've got everything buttoned
up from the paperwork perspective, I guess is the best
way to put it. So that any sort of swift
action because of that, I think would surprise me.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Okay, Chick pattersoncbsports dot Com. It's not a robust weekend
in the ACC. We got pitt Florida State, Virginia Tech,
Georgia Tech, we got n C State, Notre Dame, Wake Forest,
Oregon State, out of conference, Clemson, Boston College. Which of
these games means the most to you? Which one will
have the biggest impact?
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I mean, truthfully, there's sort of two things that are
going on this week. The Georgia Tech Virginia Tech game
is interesting just because it is a game that if
Georgia Tech is as good as the number beside its name,
then they should handle business there. Georgia Tech also, especially
in this series, they've been known to play really close
(03:30):
to each other. Somebody plays off and somebody plays down,
So looking at Georgia Tech. And then the other thing,
which is I guess on a similar line, is how
does Florida State respond after the lost to Miami. So
that's a fascinating one because Paton Ordozy does have in
his record book as Pitt's head coach road wins against
good ACC teams, going into Depth Valley and beating the
(03:52):
eventual national champs in twenty sixteen. So you know, does
Florida State bounce back or does make that thing a
little bit Harry? Those are two spots where you've got
teams in Georgia Tech and Florida State that should take
care of business. All signs point to it, but there's
just a feeling that it could be closer than you expect.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
We were just talking South Carolina at LSU. We had
a Gamecock fan, a very confident game Cock fan, saying
they're going down there to get a win. I could
see it with the big time Ladora Seller's performance. I
still don't trust the defense, but I do think it's possible.
Where where Where's your gut on this game Saturday night?
Speaker 2 (04:27):
I mean, Brian Kelly slats the podium and tries to
remind you about it, but I mean, his seniors have
only lost one game in Tiger Stadium at night, so
it's I mean, I'm I'm so sorry to be over
simplistic about that, but I just don't see this South
Carolina team being able to do everything that it takes
(04:47):
to go into that building and win under the lights
in baton rouge.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Okay, all right, well that's I'm with you on that one.
What about this Florida Texas A and M game A
and M's favored by a touchdown? Florida feels a little
dangerous right now, But I don't know they're dangerous enough
to go in there and get a win. What do
you think? I mean, here we are again, Billy Napier
kind of trying to save his job. Lagway seems to
have figured some things out, but is it enough?
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yeah, And you know Dallas it helps Dallas Wilson, this
freshman wide receiver who looks like he's NFL ready right now.
I mean that was his that was his first game.
He hadn't been healthy. This whole Florida team has been
a little bit snake bitten by injury, and some of
them turning around. Their play is coming along with getting healthier.
So yeah, they're I mean, they're they're surging up. I
(05:33):
just think Texas A and M is a good team.
I don't know if they'll be able to, you know,
duck the trend of falling apart in November, the way
that Texas A and M has kind of been doing
here for a little bit, even across different head coaches.
So I don't know those are going to be questions
for early November. As I look at him right now,
I think they are pretty good football teams. So I
(05:54):
think that's going to be a lot about Texas A
and M kind of proving itself and log going to
win that. A lot of people be impressed.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
By John Matteer makes his return tomorrow. We're told, does
that does that automatically equal to win over Texas in
the shootout in the cotton ball or do you think
there's more to this game?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Oh? I just I think that there's always always a
situation in a season where you got to look at
that game as an island, like it is all alone.
Whatever Texas does all year, whatever Oklahoma does all year,
they might do the exact opposite thing in this game.
It's just that's that's the way that this rivalry goes.
It really is something about playing in that stadium with
(06:32):
the fifty to fifty split crowd. It's just turned up
to another level. I feel like this is this is
going to be the one where, Yes, Oklahoma's defense should
absolutely maul Texas's offensive line, which looks really, really bad.
But at the same time, would it be the craziest
thing if this is where you know, Texas finally puts
(06:52):
it all together. So I'm I wouldn't be surprised if
Texas is able to get up off the mat and
make things a little bit interesting. But Mattier plays, then
it's gonna be a problem because he's such a difference
maker and an upgrade in my opinion from the backup
Michael Hawkins Junior.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
A couple of quick things we'll let you go. Chip
pattersoncbsports dot com Cover three podcast Hanging Out with US.
Bama is favored by two and a half on the
road right now against Missouri. Should they be.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah? I think so. I mean I'm on the Alabama
side of it. Yeah, I get like it is the
smart side. I know a lot of smart people who've
made really smart arguments for a while. You know this
is fair. Not only is this fair, but that Missouri
is a good bet. And I get it, I hear you.
But what was it I was? I think it was
against Texas A and M last year right where it
(07:41):
was like forty two to ten, like Missouri gets hot. Missouri,
you know, had some wins. I mean Kansas kind of
moved the ball on him a little bit. South Carolina
was in that thing late. I'm I just think that
I've got a little bit more confidence in the Crimson
tide now doing it on the road in sec play
in this huge game. Who knows. We saw them, you know,
(08:03):
wet themselves in Tallahaffy, so they're capable of it. But
I'm on the Alabama's getting better. That Alabama's really good
and probably my if we were just saying our favorite
team in terms of like the one you would want
to back. I think Alabama's that team for me. In
the SEC.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Indiana Oregon Top ten matchup in Austin Stadium and Eugene
just massive. Still hard to believe that Kurt Signetti's doing
this again. They're both five and zero both to and
oh and the Big ten. I mean, Oregon favored by
a touchdown and a half here feels like the winner,
but like, can can Signetti do this?
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Yeah? Of course signety can do this? Yeah? How about
this is also I mean, these are probably the two
top quarterbacks in the sport right now. Yep. I mean
it's I think it's like sixteen and one to fourteen
and one touchdown to interception ratio. I mean, they're just
they've both been absolutely locked in as like new starters
(08:56):
taking over it with those offenses. So, I I mean
it could be the way that I imagine this game
is that it is going to be a little bit
of back and forth and have a couple of big swings.
Now I think to like what you're sort of suggesting,
I think Oregon probably wins. I mean I generally think so,
but Indiana absolutely can do it.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Okay, Signetti and Indiana long term in your mind, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
I think so. I think that he's Yeah. I mean,
there's something about the journey he's already had where I
don't know. I mean, he he could absolutely find a
spot where he's got his own, you know, reasons to
want to do it or a relationship that could you know,
I'm not aware of. But I think he likes I
(09:44):
think he likes what he's got in terms of a
lot of new and excited benefactors. You know, like the
reason Indiana decided sort of as a community, we are
not going to let football drag behind, and they they
rallied and they pulled the together and they created a
situation where Indiana went from the bottom of the Big
(10:04):
Ten in terms of football investment, I think in the
upper third at least. And that's a massive conference. That's
like top five in the conference. So you know, that's
when you're the face of that, when you're leading that charge.
I think that's an invigorating spot. So I don't see
him rushing to leave just because Indiana is having historically
great success year in and year out. Chip.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
We appreciate you, buddy, have a great weekend. We'll talk
to you next Friday.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Sounds good job, be well,
