Speaker 1 (00:01):
To my surply.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Hit the Monks tonight.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
It was a graveyard smell.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Get caught home in a fly hit the Monks.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I'm still a little bit shook by Sam Farber referring
to me as creepy Kyle Bailey on the Hornets pregame
show in Hornets broadcast promo right there, how about that
creepy Kyle Bailey and terrifying Travis T Bone Hancock. What
Sam doesn't know at this point, I think is that
I'm off tomorrow. I'm not on Walker Mayle filling in
for me tomorrow on the Hornets pregame show with Travis
(00:36):
T Bone Hancock. I'm off. I don't get many days
off this time of year, so I'm taking a day off.
Walker's in tomorrow. I'm back on Sunday for both Panthers
and Hornets pregame. So should be a busy, fun filled
weekend ahead. Hopefully these teams can get back on track.
More on the Hornets coming up in just a bit.
Wayne Larravie, voice of the Green Bay Packers, back on
the show in twenty minutes, will preview Sunday's game between
(00:58):
the Panthers and the Packers. Right now, we check in
with Chippatterson, CBS Sports dot Com, CBS Sports Network, and
the Cover three podcasts. Back with us here on a
Halloween football Friday to look ahead to the week ten,
Chip Patterson, what's going on, Budd, Happy Halloween.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Happy Halloween to you too. I hope it is. I
hope it is a safe I hope it is a
fun one.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
I hope all the kids are going to stay in
their costumes without two minutes too much repair needed throughout
the throughout the evening.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
I'm gonna guess that your and and my Friday evenings
will will look quite similar tonight. You know, are you
dressing up or are you just show ferring the kids
around the neighborhood.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Oh, without a.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Doubt it is. I thought about throwing on like some
extra like gauze or brace in terms of being a
Carolina Hurricanes injured player, you know which with my canes gear.
But ultimately, yeah, I am I am bodyguard. I am chauffeur.
We've got an inflatable dinosaur situation, so I've got an
(01:54):
extra set of batteries and a screwdriver. So yeah, this
this I am maintenance, without a.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Doubt, maintenance and bodyguard just carrying around a screwdriver. Okay,
well that's awesome.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Man.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
There's a lot going on still here in the world
of college football this week. Let me start with what
is you know, certainly the biggest, if not one of
the two biggest stories this week, Brian Kelly being fired
at LSU. We're a long way from Baton Rouge, but
obviously that factors into what's already a crazy, crazy coaching carousel.
What was your reaction and what will be the ripple
effects of Brian Kelly's firing?
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Ooh, you know, the ripple effects are probably the more
interesting piece because it is like the Florida job, and
really like the Penn State job, one of those jobs
that comes open and I and many others immediately start
to go to the fan fiction of all the dominoes
(02:49):
that can that could end up starting starting to fall.
Lane Kiffen is doing a lot of messaging that he's
not planning to leave. Lane Kiffin's been a target or
a candidate for the LSU job before and of course
ended up not taking it. You know, Florida fans have
their eyes set on Lane Kiffen. What if Lane Kiffin
stays Matt Rule Penn State, Penn State alum.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Now, all of a sudden on.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Thursday, we get news that Matt Rule has signed an extension,
and of course Carolina Panthers fans remember he signed an
extension with Baylor two still took the Panthers shop.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Is where I remind you that the.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Carolina Panthers bank roll for hiring Matt Rule at the
time is not a university that is going to be
excited to pay fifteen million dollars in buy out money
to get Matt Rule and then a competitive salary on
top of that. So while it might keep Matt Rule
from the NFL, I do think his well, it might
not keep him from the NFL. I do think Matt
Rule's extension keeps him from making a move to another
(03:43):
college job in this hiring cycle. So with Brian Kelly
opening up too, we've got this situation where there's a
top level of candidates. Then everybody just seems like, oh, yeah,
of course, and it'll be him. It could be him.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
But if all those coaches decide to stay put.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Then we're going to have a very interesting coaching carousel where, yes,
a lot of jobs could change hands, but it might
not be the massive dominoes that we might have expected
given the caliber of an.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
LSU A Penn State of Florida.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Job now side state Mikyle. I'm sure you, like many
have been following the drama throughout the state of Louisiana,
the Louisiana government, the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors,
and all of the all the goodness there. But I mean,
that is going to be a book that's written twenty
years from now that's still unfolding. I don't know how
much your listeners are interested in those politics, but if
(04:35):
you are even mildly aware of the history of the
Louisiana governor and the Louisiana Governor's office and the way
that that state handles business, buddy, it is it is
interesting that we have no sitting president, no sitting athletic director,
no head football coach, and a governor who's made himself
the main character of LSU football.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Buddy, gets you popcorn ready?
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Yeah, listen, it's Southern college football. In my eyes, that's
always entertaining. But they're a different level to Louisiana, There's
no doubt about it. The opposite end of the spectrum,
though still in the coaching carousel conversation kind of is
the fact that Dave Dorn all but shut down any
rumors that he's retiring at season's end at a press conference.
I believe what yesterday two days ago, yesterday where I
mean he just came out and said it, I have
(05:15):
no intention of retiring at season's end. And that's been
the hot goss, you know, around NC State for at
least the last couple of months, rumors that it was
around last year as well. What did you make of
Dave yesterday?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
I think I think that is good legal advice, Kyle.
I think that his representation. I think that you know,
his his agent, his team, whoever it was, they were
very very sharp to make sure that he did.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Not message some kind of I'm just gonna pack it off,
pack it up, and sail off.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Into the sunset, because if you do that, you lose
any kind of leverage as it pertains to the buyout.
And based on I've not pulled up his contract recently,
but if I remember correctly, we're talking about ten to
twelve million.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Dollars, Yeah, twelve and a half.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
I think, yeah, I would not be messaging that I'm
just gonna make this easy on you. I would make
sure my public statement is I'm showing up to work
every day until you all make the move to get
me out of here. And of course doing that would
cost some money.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
So might we end up with some kind of resolution.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Might we end up with some kind of agreed upon
deal something along those lines potentially, But I would think
that that's sort of what's at hand in terms of
the messaging that he's sending in addition to trying to
make sure that he holds a locker room together that's
really been tested during this losing streak against FBS competition.
I hear you.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Chim pattersoncbsports dot Com Cover three podcast hanging out with
us here on a Friday, We talked about this a
little bit yesterday. Game day is going to Cincinnati at
Utah and Scott Saderfield after a really rough start for
you know, rough couple of first two years at Cincinnati,
has this team, what's seven and one and with a
big opportunity this week and they're seventeen in the country.
(07:02):
What if this coaching carousel stuff gets wild, do the
Scott's Saderfield suddenly become a candidate whose name gets bandied
about more often.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Yes, Yeah, unquestionably, they're undefeated in conference play.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
They are a contender for the College Football Playoff.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
They're heavy underdogs as they head out to go play
Utah in a very difficult place to play in Salt
Lake City late Saturday night, especially being down one of
their top two running backs. But Brendan Sowarsby's been fantastic.
And you know, if the app State fans remember when
coach Satterfield had that thing hummin. You always had a
couple of different running backs. You sort of had that
(07:38):
run game that was built on the zone principles. Offensive line,
kind of inside outside, keep defenses off balance. I mean,
they really are working. They are really working that thing
to the idealized version of what a Scott Saderfield offense
could be. Defensively, they've got enough good players. They've been
pretty solid along the lines of scrimmage. So yes, I
(08:01):
think that Scott Satterfield with the you know, he's got
Louisville on the resume, he's got he's gonna have Cincinnati,
He's a big twelve title contender. Another former at State
coach that I would say could count trigger that. Let's
say Eli Drinkwitz ends up getting the LSU job, the
Florida job, the Penn State job, and Missouri all of
a sudden needs to hire a replacement. Scott Saterfield I
(08:23):
think would certainly be on the list of candidates that
you would look to and at least want to have
a conversation with.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
You know, we I don't know if I'm going to
put Scott Scott.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Satterfield on the list for Florida, LSU or Penn State,
But if we do start to have those dominoes where
a program like a Missouri needs to make a hire,
given the what he's been able to do to take
a Cincinnati program that dropped off a cliff after Luke
Fickle left and all of a sudden have them as
a contender for the playoff, I think he'd be worth
a look for sure.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Any chance Carolina gets their first conference win for Bill
Belichick at Syracuse tonight, I do yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
I think so. Couple of reasons.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Number one, I think that Syracuse since losing Steve Angeli,
the offense just really hasn't been good. I mean, Ricky
Collins is oh to four, is a starting quarterback, and
what we've seen from North Carolina defensively has been improvement
in each of the last couple weeks.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
We're starting to see that group.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
They are not overwhelmingly talented, and honestly, they are missing
some of the players who are going to have the
best chance to make NFL rosters the in coming years.
But they're letting a lot of their young players play.
They're starting to get in there. I am buying in
on the idea that Syracuse is going to have trouble
lighting up the scoreboard tonight. Now can North Carolina score?
(09:40):
I don't know, man, they can hold on to the football.
I think it's gonna be a low scoring game. I
think it's gonna be one where North Carolina's gonna have
a shot. And so for those reasons, I mean, yeah,
it's my pick. I think North Carolina's gonna get their
first ACC win under Bill Belichick tonight. But more than anything,
I feel like they're gonna have a shot because of
the defense and because of Syracuse's offensive struggles.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Favored at home tomorrow noon, ACC Network over Duke three
and a half point favorites. Currently I'm a little surprised
by that, are you, well.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
I mean, we've got the uncertainty about Clemson's quarterback situation, right, Yeah,
and they've been playing super poorly. I mean they haven't
won have they won a conference they won a home
game against the power conference opponent since the Louisville game
last year.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
I don't think think the answers.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
No, No, the mestique, Yeah, the mystique is gone. So
Duke is in the words of many Diaz. I love
our friend Joe Ovius who echoes it all the time,
but they are the architects of their own demise. Like,
let Duke put things together and not trip all over themselves.
That is a game that Duke can go and win.
It's a pride game for the Tigers. How about this, Kyle,
(10:46):
It's a swing game for their bowl chances. The Clemson
Tigers have never missed the postseason.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Under Davos Sweeney.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
Worst finished with six and seven with a bowl loss
to BJ Daniels in South Florida.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
That's that's a tricky spot, no doubt, all.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Right, Miami SMU, Miami's ten and a half point favorite
on the road down in Dallas. Any chance for some
you know, frustration there or do they roll?
Speaker 3 (11:10):
All right? So, Kevin Jennings, the SMU quarterback as we've
seen in recent weeks and certainly did.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Against wake Forest.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
He's banged up, So on one hand, you like credit
him for gutting it out, but also handicapping this thing.
You're like, fmu is going to really struggle when it
comes to him being able to escape Miami's pass rush.
I don't know if Carson Beck is going to be
great or not. He just can't be four interceptions bad
and Miami should be able.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
To win, all right.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Chip Patterson, cbssports dot Com, CBS Sports Network in the
Cover three podcast with us each and every Friday, Thank you, brother,
We appreciate it. Happy Halloween.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Happy Halloween sounds good. Y'll be well
