Speaker 1 (00:00):
But what is the single most shocking early retirement in
sports history. We'll come back to this, but right now
we welcome in and welcome back the pastor of Payne
Corey Miller. Decade in the NFL as a linebacker, always
a game cock with a dash of roll tide. And
he and I ra adversaries this week, ra adversaries, but he's
always my guy. He's back with us on the hotline, Pastor,

(00:20):
what's going on this week?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
My brothers, my brothers in the Queens City, how are you?
I'm just fresh off eighteen holes golf tournament for pro MJM.
Denny Hamlin and Mark Brin of Hoody, and we just
came off the course of the timing was perfect and
didn't play great today, but had a great time and
down here on the coast of South Carolina, of course
you know very well, and at Bulls Bay and so

(00:45):
my beautiful track. So having a great time. By the way,
Barry Simmons was the most shocking of retirement, because Barry
Sanders retired when he was really in his prime. He
has so much more. Yeah, and he said, and he
stopped for to me, that would be the most shocking
retirement well, and I.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Know you know this, but I think folks forget it
wasn't just that he had more left in the tank.
That he was only thirty one when he retired, but
he was less than fifteen hundred yards shy of Walter
Payton's all time rushing record when he did it.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
He couldn't have cared less, which is unbelievable to me.
I mean, the dude played football the way it should
be playing. And you think about a two thousand yard season,
and I know I played him a couple of times
in New York and at in Detroit, and the offensive
line wasn't that good. And I'll Mitchell the quarterback. They
had a passing game, they spread you out, but man,

(01:30):
the offensive line was really terrible. And the fact that
he could do that be fifteen hundred yards shy of
Walter Payton's record and said, you know what I'm done,
And to me, it just says a lot about who
he is and his character. I agree, all.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Right, I got to get to it. I told the
folks earlier in the day that I was trying to
convince you to ride down to the game with me
in Atlanta, but you, being the church going man, that
you are with real principles and responsibilities. You're gonna watch
this one from home coming up on Sunday, for better
or worse. I'm gonna get up at the crack of
dawn and make the trip Sunday morning with my dad
to go watch this thing. So I'm feeling okay, Corey.

(02:05):
In fact, I'm feeling really good about my Hokies. I
have actually come out and predicted the upset win on Sunday.
How do you feel about that?

Speaker 2 (02:13):
You predicted that win? I did. I'm taking that Is
this based on you know, educational homework and looking at
rosters and who's coming back and who came in? Is
it based on that just based on your heart?

Speaker 1 (02:28):
I will never deny that there's some heart involved here.
I'll never deny that. All right, there's definitely some heart
involved here. I do think though, that Kyrin drones in
a new offense with Philip Montgomery. I think they're going
to be more wide open. I think drones can play.
I think he can do many of the same things
to the Gamecock defense that Lenoris is going to do
to our defense. I expect Leonoris to have success, I

(02:49):
really do. But I think Virginia Tech's gonna put up points.
And I think Shane and that defense with a lot
of new pieces in Week one, because you and I
know that Week one college football, very strange things happen.
I'm starting to get that fluttering feeling Cory that my
hookies are gonna show up on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
They're show up. I mean, they'll be there. They're being
mistake has been domed. They're gonna warm up, they're gonna
play the game. But unfortunately they're gonna go home with
an L. They're gonna take an L back to Blacksburg.
I mean, you know that that's gonna happen. Uh you know, listen,
I know, I you know, I thought to Shane, Uh,
you know, people around the program this this team did
lose a lot. I mean, everybody's looking at the one

(03:25):
area that's the defense, right. You lost a lot of
players to the National Football League that are gonna be
on rosters this year. They gotta replace a lot of guys.
But one thing Shane has done is plug and play.
I mean, you know, they had the fact league in
the country last year was a transfer. Uh So he's
done an outstanding job of bringing guys in that fit
what they do. Defensively, Uh, they got some pieces back

(03:46):
that has played there, or they have some some young depth.
But but this offense, you know, they're gonna run the ball,
they're gonna throw it, they're gonna play action you and
they're gonna they're gonna win on special teams. I mean,
and that's what happens. And I think it's gonna be
a close game. But I think South Carolina Leonois Sellers
in the end will find a way to take the drive,
go down the field and score a touchdown. But I

(04:06):
don't think there to be a lotside the game. I
think it's gonna be a close, very interesting game. So
I'm just fired up about college football. But I think
the game Cocks are gonna win. And just I just
don't know. And I haven't seen enough of Virginia Tech
to say upset. I know, you know more about that program.
I haven't really watched them a whole lot, but I
know what Shane Deem is doing. I know about South

(04:28):
Carolina and this is a good football team that has
built off of the nine wins last year, the six
game winn streak they went on before they went to
the bowl game. So they're gonna build off that, and
I think they're gonna play some good football and I
think they're gonna win.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Yeah, Listen, I get it. And I had up until
recently been saying that I think it's a tight game
and probably South Carolina pulls away at the end. That
had been my perspective, So I won't pretend that it
hasn't been. But I'm looking forward to Sunday, I really am.
What do you think, just in terms of Shane, you know,
I've known him a long time, you know him really
well at this point. You know, he talked about it
on that SEC documentary on Netflix, what it means to

(05:04):
him to Virginia Tech, to be Frank's son and all
that he's trying to carve out his own legacy at
South Carolina, which I love. I root for him pretty
much every other week. But I mean, there's got to
be something about this game where he's having to fight distraction,
where you know, I know he's got to preach to
it to his team about not being distracted, But for him,
I mean, he's human, right, There's a lot going through
his head. Do you worry at all about him getting

(05:26):
caught up and looking across the other sideline and seeing
Virginia Tech, of all of all teams.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Not at all, you know, not at all, because this
file is going to be in the booth, he's gonna
be on, he's gonna be one game cap clothing. Uh.
And And I think for Shane, this is one of
those things that he wants to win this game. And
he understands that everybody is watching, all the folks back
in Blacksburg and that pull for Virginia Tech. He understands
that that that competitive spirit with his dad, even you know,

(05:53):
he played at Virginia Tech, he coached at Virginia Tech.
So there's a lot of love there for him. But
at the same time, I can tell you when a
player goes through that type of situation when you go
play a former team or you know, it's just something
in you man that wants to win that game so bad.
Shane can't play. And that's why I don't have the
fear of him, like really just getting too caught up

(06:13):
into this game and be too emotional because he's not
on the field. Now, if you've got a player that's
different because they play a lot with emotions and they
try too hard and they make mistakes and sometimes bad
things happen, but not from a coaching standpoint, I think
he'll be cool, calm and collected, and he's gonna do
a great job and we'll see. Man, it's gonna be fun.
I know he talks about it a lot and he

(06:34):
smiles about it a lot. But this he's been circled.
He has been had this thing circle on his calendar
for a long time. And I hope they go and
do their thing. And what a way to start, I mean,
a good Virginia Tech football team.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Well, I think Shane also probably wants to stick it
to the ad. That's just my opinion. I think he
wants to stick it to the ad too. I'm not
lying about that. I think he wants to stick it
to win babcosh. But I don't know that he's never
said it. I don't want to put words in his mouth.
That's just a feeling that I get the pastor paying.
Corey Miller is with us on the hotline here, all right.
I also told the folks earlier and I said, I'm
not ratting Corey ol. But when I talked to him

(07:05):
on the phone a couple of days ago, you kind
of gave me the impotent like this implication, or rather,
you kind of gave me this feeling that you think
Clemson might actually be as advertised. I know you don't
want to say that, but Clemson LSU. I think that
the Clemson Tigers are winning this game this weekend. I
wouldn't be surprised if they win it by ten or more.
I'm not a big LSU believer. What do you think

(07:27):
happens in this game?

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Okay, I'm gonna put my analyst hat on without the
you know, the game cock deal. Clemson's got eight players
coming back on offense. They got eight players coming back
on defense. The main position that quarterback with Kate Klubnik.
They got wide receivers, frisbee catching dogs that have done
great things for their program last year. I know they'll
have you know, new guys at there running back position,

(07:51):
so to speak, but but they have talent there. The
offensive line is going to be, you know, a senior
ridden type of offensive line. You know they're good there.
The defensive line has been solid up front, especially at
the defensive tackles position. They added a kid I believe
from Purdue in the transfer portal. But listen, it's LSU
is to buy you, Bengals. They got a good team,

(08:13):
and I'm telling you this because LSU is going to
be the surprise team in the SEC. What they focused
on was their defense. Their offense was spectacular last year,
but their defense couldn't stop a common code. They could not.
But they have gotten better. I think they have a
new defensive coordinator. They're going to be more aggressive. They
got good players, and the thing that they're looking at

(08:36):
they normally lose openers, right, so when you look at
it from that standpoint, they struggle in openers on the
road in Death Valley and Clemson's going to be tough.
I understand that, but I think their offense with the
secondary of Clemson, I'm not buying that just yet. I
think you can throw the football on this football team.
I think they're gonna have They got some dudes out
there that can play, run and catch for the football,

(08:57):
and I think they find a way to win this
game in the fourth quarter. If would I be surprised
if Clemson wins this game, I wouldn't say ten or more.
But would I be surprised if they win this game? No,
I would not be surprised, But I think just because
it's game number one. I go back to you remember
LSU Florida State a couple of years ago. You know,
one of those types of games where Florida State ended

(09:17):
up winning that game. I think ls you had a
box you'll go. If my memory serves me correctly, I
think it's going to be that type of game. Whoever
turns the ball over less or minimize those mistakes, the
off size, you know, the motion penalties which you have
in early games. Whoever minimize those things and don't make
that crucial mistake will win this football game. But I

(09:39):
you know, my church is ninety nine point five percent
Clemson Tigers in Greenville, South Carolina, and we just had
Spirit Day and everybody except about four people had Clemton
Jersey's on. So I will say I expect the Tigers
to win, and I'll leave it at that.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Okay, all right, I like it now Before I let
you go, you're doing radio for the folks that may
maybe forgot. You're doing radio downe in tusk, Lisa during
the week. How confident are those folks that they're gonna
beat the snot out of Florida State.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
They are confident? I mean, what's the kid's named Constellano Costah. Yeah,
he has been nothing but diarrhea of the mouth, right,
and how he's gonna do this and do that. And
the defense that he practiced against is the best defense
that he'll probably see all year. That tells me one thing.
He's scared, right, he's trying to talk himself into confidence. Well,

(10:28):
it's not gonna work. This team is gonna be more rounded,
more grounded, I should say, offensively, with ty Centson now
being the starting quarterback, they will depend on the running
game much more. They got a very good offensive line.
They got receivers with Ryan Williams and others on the outside,
and the Barnard. They got some dudes that can make plays.
But I think they're gonna pound the football. Ryan Grubb

(10:50):
being backed as the offensive coordinator. They're gonna win this game.
Florida State is gonna wake up to reality come Saturday.
And I'm not buying anything that's old the State are saying.
I mean this team they love to transfer port. They
got dudes from everywhere. To me, that's hard to build camaraderie,
especially this early in the season. Row God Rot, I'm

(11:12):
with you.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
I think they're getting blasted, and I think I think
Mike Norvell is done at the end of the year.
I don't believe in anything Florida State's selling. I'm right
there with you.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
I don't either. I'm just so sick of them and
Danny Canell put him in that mixtreat. I'm sick of all.
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
You know Danny's coming up in seventeen minutes.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Right, well tell him. I said hello, but I'm sick
of him. Man, Florida State.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
All right, brother, I appreciate you. I will honk at
you from the interstate when I'm passing by on Sunday morning.
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
Well, Hank the harm Man. Listen, I'm gonna be praying
for a safe travels for you. But I do pray
that you handle the l with dignity in class, which
I know you will. Much love to you and I
know you have a good time. I wish I wasn't.
I don't wish I wasn't passing the church because I
love my church. But that's the only reason that I'm
not going. I got to. I got to do the
Lord's work.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Football, you know, I respect it. Getting I'm catching some
flag by the kids for not going to church on Sunday.
So I get it all right, buddy. I'm I know,
I know Corey Miller, Pastor Payne. Decade in the NFL
as a linebacker, always a game cock with a dash
of row tide.
