Speaker 1 (00:00):
We haven't focused as much on NC State as of late,
and I wanted to do that and bring in a
guy who knows the pack well. He is the editor
of pac Pride, part of the two four to seven
Sports network. Our buddy Corey Smith is back with us
for a Thursday conversation. Corey, what's going on, man?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
How you been na much?
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Actually just driving out of Tampa right now, driving to Tampa.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Really, what's going on?
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yeah? Oh, you know Gasparilla boll to.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Jenny. Yeah, no, I know.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
We were just talking about the Gasparilla Bowl a little
while ago. We'll get to that in just a second,
but I will start with the Will Wade rant last night.
And I think we've all probably joked. You would have
never known they won the game by thirty six points
if all you saw was his postgame rant about his players.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
But boy, he just got fiery last night. What'd you
think about that?
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah? I mean, look, this is a you know, kind
of what Will has done a couple of times so
far of the season. You know, he did it after
the VCU game, He did it leading up to the
VCU game. Actually not to this degree. And you know,
you might have heard some of the pregame talk and
he was discussing, you know, leading up to the unc
Ashville game, the fact that he had to practice that
(01:04):
morning to get guys back on track. I think he
had like four and a half hours worth of practices
between you know, the eighteen hours leading up to that
game against you in se Ashvil. So there's been a
lot of kind of pressing his thumb on the scale
here to try to try to tip things in the
favor of what they're trying to do defensively, and it
really just doesn't seem like it's all clicking yet. You
(01:26):
see more energy, you see more physicality at times, but
you know, when you go into a game against you know,
a team like Texas Texas Southern and you give up
over seventy points, I think it was still a little
bit of frustration for him coming out of that game.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
So, I mean, how do you feel like they've played
so far? Obviously it's been up and down, but overall,
what do you think of what Will Wade has produced
in his short tenure thus far as the head coach.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
I mean, I think it's it's pretty short of what
he was hoping for. I know, you know, his hope
going into it was to go win the now Invitational
and win one of you know, the two games against uh,
you know against Kansas and yeah, against Kansas, and obviously
you know the road game against the ball burn two.
But uh you came away oh for four and in
the four high major games that you played so far,
(02:13):
you still get a chance to win one against Ole
miss Is coming up Sunday, but that's you know, you
kind of lost the luster on that one a little
bit too. But you know, there's there's been some ups
and downs. You know, guys like Darian Williams started off
the season really well and then his play is dipped
against better competition. Obviously, Paul McNeil has been up and down,
but forty seven points for him last night, you know
(02:34):
what he's capable of. It's just it's really I think
the point of frustration for will Wade and I think
Frenzy State fans is, you know, number one, finding consistency
on the offensive side of the basketball and being able
to produce from the guys that you know are supposed
to produce. And then number two, you know, just on
the defense side of the basketball, closing out perimeter defense
has to get significantly better. You've seen you know, random
(02:56):
dude just heat up over these three, you know, especially
the last three they've lost. Seaton Hall was just you
know they were going to feed the ball inside and
then dominate inside. But you know the games the last three,
the perimeter defense has really been suspect.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
All of this is in the same vein. But I'll
ask it.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
When this roster was being assembled prior to the season,
back in the offseason, did you think it was a
roster As it became complete, did you feel them like
it was a roster that could compete with Duke and Carolina?
And has that changed to this point right now?
Speaker 3 (03:30):
I don't think it's necessarily changed, and I do think
it was. It definitely was the roster and I still
feel it is one that can compete there. The issue
that you're running into right now is again, you know,
you expected a little bit more out of Darien Williams
being the bus driver for this team, and you haven't
seen that to this point. Can that change? Yes? I
mean you saw it late in the game obviously against Kansas,
(03:54):
you know, picking up eleven of his seventeen points in
overtime in the final what thirty second into the game
as well. In regulation. You've seen it from Paul McNeil,
and you've seen it from you know, at times, Terrence Arsono.
He was another one that was expected to have a
bigger role. You just haven't seen those guys. Again, I
keep going back to the consistency aspects here. You haven't
(04:16):
seen those guys consistently produced. And that I think is
the kind of worrysome aspects here is once you get
into those games, those you've got to know what you're
getting from those guys. You've got to know that you're
gonna be able to press all the right buttons, and
you just don't know which one is the press going
in each and every single of these games. Will wait
right now.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Corey Smith, Pac Pride editor, he's with us here on
a Thursday afternoon. Let's pivot to football just in the
interest of time here, big picture stuff. Not the greatest
season in NC state history, but they finished strong.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
They get to the bowl game.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
As we talked about the Gasparilla Bowl tomorrow by the way,
at two thirty.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
For those that are wondering.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
What I mean, I guess what were your general expectations
going into this season? And by the end of it,
like what did you think of all the noise around
think Dave Doran's rumored potential retirement, and then very abruptly
him saying, nope, I am coming back for twenty twenty six.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yeah, it's funny because I actually said before the season,
I said, over and over again. I might have said
it one your show too. We were talking about you know,
what's the what what gets Dave Dooran off the forceives
hot seat? And you know, I said, I mean seven
and five is the bar. You've got to win some
games that you you didn't think you were gonna win. Uh,
and you got to beat UNC at the end of
the season, ECU at the beginning of the season. That's
(05:28):
exactly what they did. I mean, you know, outside of
losing to Virginia Tech at home, there wasn't really a
game on the schedules for like, ah, they should have
won that game. I mean you look back and and
a lot of these, a lot of the games they
ended up playing on the road ended up being you know,
against teams that were either competing to get into the
cons blow playoff or they are or one of them
(05:49):
is in you know, Notre Dame maybe should have been
in duke Quins the AC Championship. That's another road loss
for you. But you know, as far as as far
as what I made of the rumor thaws I mean,
or the you know, retirement rovers, yeah, I mean there
was still some of that, but again, I think it
was all just kind of like this muddy middle where
you know, he finishes seven and five, so wins three
(06:10):
out of the last four games. You can't really let
go of a guy at that point based off of
what he's been able to build and then you know,
kind of turn the trajectory around. But also if you're
Dave Dora, and that's not exactly the type of season
to be like, all right, man, I'm gonna ride off
into a sunset. This is you know, we were seven
and five, We we beat Georgia Tech. Man, this was
this is a great season. He'd probably needed at least,
(06:30):
you know, nine to ten wins to be able to
be like, all right, that was it for me. I'm
good to go. And I think now it's just kind
of left both sides like all right, we got to
do this again. Let's see what we can get next year.
On top of last thing here too is you know,
just the coaching market as well, and obviously all the Tower,
all the teams and Power four to let go of
head coaches. That obviously changed tide a little bit too,
because you were just you were gonna be competing at
(06:52):
different waters when it comes to what you were trying
to get ahead coaches offseason.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
You're right, so you kind of fed into it right there.
But I mean, generally speaking, do you view it as
a good thing, a positive thing, that Dave Doran's coming
back next year.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
I mean, we'll see, because again, it's about what you
can do in the transfer portal. It's about who you
can keep and you lose Hollywood smothers today. But I
don't think anybody even going back to the spring, thought
Hollywood Mothers gonna be back. The thought process was he
was potentially gonna go to the NFL Draft after the season,
or you know, if he had a good enough season,
potentially look for more money elsewhere. So that's not really
(07:25):
a massive loss. The other question marks really are are
going to be, especially on the offensive side of the football. CJ.
Bailey to Curious Peak is another one. But I think
he's probably looking at the NFL Draft or maybe going
to the transfer portal, we'll see, but he's the guy
that's got NFL draft potential written all over him. And
then you know a couple others. I mean, Terrell Anderson
was your leading receivers this past offseason. What does he
(07:47):
ultimately do that's gonna be one to watch, and then
some other playmakers around the offensive side of the football.
You're losing a lot of players who've got to retain
some or go out on the transfer portal. So it
can be a positive and you can continue the builds
for that, but it's number one, you know, how much
are people bought in and how much money they're going
to have to spend and go out and get the
right players. Number two, are they going to be attracted
(08:09):
to NC State and ultimately come to play for them?
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Since you mentioned it, I mean I've followed the reporting
as it relates to CJ. Bailey, But you know, any
thoughts on the market for him, who you think would
be coming after him, and what his mindset is right now?
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Yeah, I mean it's interesting because it's it's very similar
to what we were talking about when it came to
you know, the job market for NC State. If you're
out there looking and you're you're looking for who you're
going to get as your head coach, and you're seeing
all these high major places you know, drop their head
coach and needs there suddenly needed to look for the
top option. Well, that's kind of what's happened to CJ. Bailey.
(08:44):
You know, the last week or so, you've seen some
really good quarterbacks enter the transfer portal and they're all
going to be finding they're probably going to be looking
at at you know, landing at higher marketplaces as well.
So how much does that kind of saturate the market
for him and does that make NC State that much
more were desirable of an option. Everything I've heard behind
the scenes is that it sounds like things are still
(09:05):
tracking well for Incis State and they, you know, on
their side of things, the people that are dealing with
the contracts still feel like they're in a good position
to be able to retain him. It's just again, it's
a matter of how does he play in the gas
Parilla Bowl. You know, how much do other teams out
there covet him and how much are they trying to
pull him in because we do know, you know, the
week's leading up to the transfer port actually opening on
(09:29):
January second, he's going to be back at home. He's
going to be in Florida and spending this time there
and not on NC State campus because the Gasparilla Bowl
is placed so early in the bowl season.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
All right, last thing, and speaking of we're going to
talk to Anie Schroff coming up in just a bit
on the call for the Gasparilla Bowl tomorrow. Also the
voice of the Panthers. But you know, it's a bold
season has become a very weird thing. We're having very
you know, different conversations about it again these days, maybe
even moving it to the beginning of the season. I
believe you can correct me if I'm wrong. I do
not believe Ryan Silverfield is coaching Memphis in this bowl
(10:00):
game tomorrow. But you know, what do you hope what
do you hope n C State can get out of
this game tomorrow in Tampa?
Speaker 2 (10:05):
What's most important to see a win?
Speaker 3 (10:08):
That's the most important thing. You know, this is a
for Dave Dorian. He hasn't won a bowl game since
twenty seventeen. It's something that's kind of, you know, been
kind of stuck in a crawl for a while now,
and something that NC State fans. If you're not a
Dave Doran fan, they often point that out, and he
would like to have that kind of office record. You know,
we won a bowl game. Finally he got the eight
(10:30):
wins you'd love to see for you know, the younger
guys that are that are gonna have to step up
into some roles next season, particularly Duke Scott at the
running back position. Uh, don't know what they're gonna do. Ultimately,
who's going to opt out of this game? They still
haven't said one way or another technically, but you know,
if if a guy likes a curious peak opts not
to play in this game, who did they put at
(10:51):
the left tackle position? So there's gonna be a little
bit of watching that and watching the younger guys and
seeing how they step up. But the most important thing
for NC State is coming with a win because again,
it's just been something that has just eluded them for
so long now at this point and being able to
get to eight wins in this type of season would
be huge for them.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Love it, Corey Safe travels down to Tampa. Merry Christmas
to you and yours brother will do it again soon.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Yes, sorry, Mary Christmas? Do you Guys, I appreciate you always,
