Speaker 1 (00:11):
Oh, we got some fired up Carolina Panthers fans about
the fifty three man roster, which was brought to us
about an hour and a half ago. Cut down deadline
four pm today. The fifty three man is set. For now.
Hunter Renfro, the Clemson legend, did not make the fifty
three man at least not for now. For those of
you again freaking out about that, it's far from over.

(00:31):
My conversation with Hunter a couple of weeks ago, and
I'm not the only one, indicates that he really only
wants to play here. Now that could change. If you
really want to play football, maybe he'll go somewhere else.
But he's a vested veteran. He doesn't have to clear waivers.
I think there's a world in which he's back in
the next forty eight hours. Maybe maybe not. We shall see.
We'll come back to that in due time. We'll talk
about the roster. But it's Week one of college football.

(00:54):
We have some great games on the slate, and we
got to talk about him right now with our buddy
Danny Kanell CBS Sports, CBS Sports Network college football analyst,
Sirius XM host and of course, former college and pro
quarterback Danny Canell with us courtesy a bet online. Check
out bet online dot ag for updated college football playoff
win totals, Conference Heisman and college football Week one lines.

(01:17):
And it's good to have him back on the show.
Danny Canell, how'd you been?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Have you been? Man?

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Happy football?

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Oh? Happy football? Indeed, it's like happy new Year. Like
we've got a whole new season on the brink. We
had a nice little appetizer last week with Week zero,
a massive, massive Week one slate. It's great to be
hones with you, man. It's been a minute.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
I love it. It has been a minute, and I appreciate
you doing it and look forward to these conversations every year.
And I'm going to start with Monday and work my
way back for a second, because Bill Belichick and the
Tar Heels, as you well know, a very hot topic
of conversation here in North Carolina. I don't know what
to make of them. I'm guessing and I'm acknowledging that upfront,
I could see this team winning four games or eleven games.
I really don't know. They have a lot of new pieces,

(01:55):
a lot of new players. I do think, Danny, there
are some fans under selling t see you Monday Night.
They've got like sixty percent of their starters back at
some key positions. Sonny Dikes is a good coach. This
is a game that I'm worried about. If I'm a
Carolina fan, What is your take on this game Monday Night?

Speaker 2 (02:12):
So, Kyle, I think you're onto something because I do feel,
for whatever reason, I feel like it's boom or bust
for Carolina. Like when you said four or eleven, I
was thinking kind of four ten, like, And I don't
know if there's just a seven or eight win season
in there, you know, like, which is kind of what
they've been under the Mac Brown tenure. But I do
feel like you could get that upside surprise, and clearly

(02:34):
you could get that disaster. But I really don't know.
Here's the one thing I'll say about the TCU game,
and this is where I think it's a huge edge
for North Carolina. We're talking about one of the best
all time, not only head coaches, but one of the
best defensive minds in the sport of football that we've seen,
Grace the sideline. I'll give you an example. The last

(02:55):
time my last start in the NFL was on a
Monday night football game. I was playing with the Denver Broncos.
I was into action as a backup, and I started
against the New England Patriots. And I remember Gary Kubiak
was our offensive coordinator and he was getting me ready
to face the Bill Belichick defense, and he said, this
is gonna be the biggest task you've got mentally of

(03:16):
any game on the schedule, because Bill is going to
throw the kitchen sink at you, and he's gonna throw
something that you've never seen before. And sure enough he did.
He gave a lot of different looks stuff that we
had to game plan for adjust to on the fly,
and it was tough. And that's the type of mentality
where you've got TCU who likes to throw the ball around.

(03:36):
They've got you know, the Big twelve is littered with
really good quarterbacks. Josh Hoover is one of those really
good quarterbacks who put up great numbers last year. But
this is where you've had extra time to prepare. They've
had an entire offseason to break down. Sonny Dyke's the
offense to throw some things that are going to confuse
Josh Hoover to make some big plays while your offense

(03:57):
is kind of figuring in its way. So I think
this is a game where you actually should feel pretty
good about the edge you have a coach, because you've
had this entire training camp to prepare specifically for this game.
Then I think it'll get a little bit more challenging
because what you want to do, or with Bill Belichick
has always done historically in the NFL is really throw
a lot of different looks at you throughout the course

(04:18):
of a season. That's not typically what you see in
the college game because there's not enough time. You don't
go from nine o'clock till six o'clock in the building.
You've got to go to class, You've got other requirements
you've got to do. That to me becomes a bigger thing.
But I do think this is a big opportunity to
start off on the right foot against PCU.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
All right right there with you? Now, let me go
to Clemson and LSU coming up on Saturday night. I
think Clemson's the real deal. I expect them to win
this game. I'm not a Brian Kelly believer. I don't
think LSU is going to be able to run the
football this year, and I'm not sure their defense is
that much better, even though their fans are telling us
that's the case. I think Clemson wins this game by
ten plus on Saturday Night. What's your read?

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Who? I love the simism, Kyle, because I actually have
Clemson going all the way to the National Championship game.
Like I am a believer in this squad. I find
myself also drawn to Dabbo the way that he's built
this program kind of doing things the quote right way,
by not going to portal heavy on the season and
you know, really developing from within. Here's the one thing.

(05:19):
So I'm like, you're like, you're preaching the choir right now.
Like I love this Clemson team. Here's the one thing
that if we're both wrong, it is wrong on the
defensive side of the ball. So like last year and
everyone's talking about TJ. Parker and Peter Woods, guys that
are first round talent that are on that defensive side
of the ball, they were there last year and this
team could not get off the field versus the run.

(05:42):
They were second to last in the ACC defending the run.
LSU is going to want to run the football. That's
the one thing that makes me nervous now that being
said they brought in Tom Allen, They cleaned house on
the defensive side of the ball on the staff to
bring in a new defensive coordinator with a new mindset.
So like, they should get better, but they've got to
get dramatically better if they want to obtain their goals.

(06:04):
I feel very confident in cag Plubnick and the offense.
The offensive line brings back a ton of experience. Their
receiving corps might be one of the best collectively as
a group, with TJ. Moore, Bryant Westco and Antonio Williams
across the board. And I feel like Kate is one
of those more mature quarterbacks who can trust. But here's
the only butt. They were zero and three against the

(06:24):
SEC last year, so this is a huge opportunity for
them to get that taste out of their mouth and
start the season off on the right foot. I do
like Clemson to win this game. I don't know if
I'm quite as confident as you to go over there
and say they win by double digits, but I do
think they get it done in the real death Valley.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
I hear you Danny Canell with us courtesy of bet
Online talking about a massive Week one in college football.
Now Sunday, right, I'm headed down to Atlanta for Virginia
Tech South Carolina. There are two games I want to
talk about on Sunday with you. I'll start with that
when then we'll get to the Irish and the Hurricanes.
But I as you know, I mean, I'm a Virginia
Tech fan, so there's a lot of heart involved here.
But I do think that Brent Prying Company are going

(07:02):
to go down and give South Carolina everything they've got.
I think there there's a chance they win the game.
But you know, I do understand South Carolina overall is
considered to be the better team. What are you looking
for in this game?

Speaker 2 (07:14):
I want to see a more consistent Virginia Tech team.
I mean this is remember last year, at this time,
I think I was probably talking about him just like
everybody else was. It was a dark horse contender in
large part because he want to side from Kyron Drones.
The previous year, he showed so much potential, and then
last year he's banged up and he's kind of a
little bit more inconsistent, which makes total sense. I want

(07:35):
to see more of a consistent effort from the quarterback
and I want to see a defense. I mean, he's
got to remember, Brent Prior is a defensive minded coach.
I mean that's where he kind of cut his teeth,
came in well known to be a defensive coordinator. I
want to see a team that is up to the
task defensively, that gets those big stops, and they're going
to have their hands full with the Leonora Sellers, who's
one of these one to many quarterbacks across the country

(07:57):
who we've seen flashes of brilliance. Everybody thinks they're going
to take this huge step forward, but we don't know
for certain if that's going to happen. Now, we saw
him run all over Clemson in that Clemson South Carolina game.
But then in the bowl game, you saw Illinois do
a really good job and it was one of the
reasons they won the game. They did in an outstanding
job containing that quarterback, making them win from win the pocket,

(08:18):
making sure they didn't give up the big plays. I
am sure that it's something that Brent Pry is preaching
to his defense. You cannot let the quarterback get outside
the pocket. Let's force them to beat us from inside
the pocket. And if they do, they could have a
huge opportunity to pull off that upset, and if they do,
that is a massive, massive win for the ACC in
a game that a lot of people aren't given Virginia

(08:38):
Tech much credit. South Carolina is a trendy team that
people think is going to have a big year this
season for the SEC. That would be huge for the
ACC and as well for Virginia Tech.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
All right now, speaking of a Miami win is something
I know the Conference is really hoping on, maybe even
counting on. On Sunday, the Carson Beck led Hurricanes. I've
always been a Mario Cristobaul skeptic, but he certainly got
a loaded roster. And then Marcus Freeman. I mean, I'm
a believer last year's national runner up. They got some questions,
but who doesn't at this time of year? What is
your read on Miami and Notre Dame?

Speaker 2 (09:09):
So this one I think is huge. I think it
means more for Miami. Right Miami's playing at home, even
though they're an underdog, this feels like a game that
could really propel them into a really strong season. Like
if they win this game, you get a feather in
your cap, you get a big win under your belt.
Because remember in the first month of the season, they
play Notre Dame and then they play the Florida Gators

(09:30):
at home, so they have a huge opportunity to get
some big wins. They played Florida's eight the fifth game
of the season, so it's almost like if they win this,
that could propel them. They build confidence. If they lose it,
I do worry. What what conversation about Miami is, man,
they had this opportunity at home, they came up short, Like,
why didn't they win the game? And the reason I

(09:51):
would say, if they don't win the game, it's because
their defense can't get off the field versus a Notre
Dame offense, which is breaking in a new quarterback and CJ. Carr.
But they you do have probably the best running back
in the country in Jeremiah Love, who is a dynamic back.
He's a playmaker, he's tough, he played injured back into
last season, and he can put the team on his back.

(10:11):
But if Miami's defense, which was a SIV last year,
they couldn't stop anybody. It's one of the reasons they
went out, got a bunch of players in the portal,
brought in a new defensive coordinator from Minnesota who had
a top ten defense last year for Minnesota. That's the
big question mark for me. That is supposed to be
the big area of improvement. The defense has to turn
this into a game that's competitive in the fourth quarter,

(10:34):
and if you get the best version of Carson Beck,
that's the formula for success. But that's a great unknown
because they lost six of their top receivers from last year,
they're breaking at a bunch of new guys in the portal,
and Carson Beck's coming back off of major elbow surgery.
So I think there's a ton at stake for Miami.
I like Notre Dame's pedigree, their ability to win some
of these tough games on the road last year they

(10:55):
did it against Texas and m early in the season.
I like Notre Dames lightly, but I think this is
going to be one of those games that comes down
to the wire. My favorite playing that game is the under.
I think it's going to be a defensive blood bath
for both those defenses. Banging on each other.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Makes sense to me. Two quick things. I'll get you
out of here, State and ECU on Thursday night. Dave
Doran has made no bones about it, he did not
like the way his team conducted themselves against ECU. Like literally,
the last team they played was ECU in the Military Bowl.
They'll play him again on Thursday night. They've got CJ. Bailey, Hollywood'smothers,
Noah Rodgers, tight end Jolly. I mean, they got guys
coming back here, but nobody really seems to believe in

(11:31):
NC State. What's your take?

Speaker 2 (11:33):
So I think they're flying under the radar. It was
interesting on my Cover three podcast we were doing win totals,
and if you look at the history of Dave Doran,
last season was more than anominally the more normal is
that he's eight to nine and pushing for, you know,
a double digit win season, so I kind of expected
them to get back on that track. You mentioned CJ. Bailey,
who's a really talented quarterback who's young to kind of

(11:54):
just signed to develop him, which I think is the
right move to make. They've got some returning pieces. The
defense probably for me, is a bigger disappointment last season,
but they are one of those teams that historically has
been really physical upfront, and boy, you talk about a
must win game because of the way that Bowl game unfolded,
because of some of the trash that was talked. It
almost feels like a must win situation for Dave Dorm

(12:17):
and the wolf Pack if they want to get back
toward that eight to nine win type of season.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
All Right, last thing, Danny, you know me long enough
to know that I have a lot of respect for
the Florida State football program. I do think Mike Norvel
is a good football coach, and I respect Gus Malazan's career.
But I'm not a Thomas Castellanos believer? Are you? And why.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
I am doubtful? Like I have my concerns about Thomas Costellanos.
I'll tell you why. Florida State and this makes sense.
I used to see this all the time in the NFL.
When you play really good against the team that's their
best memory of you, and that kind of sticks in
their head. Thomas Costellano's almost beat Florida State in Boston
College two years ago. Last year, he goes into Tallahassee

(12:58):
beats him outright, and he played great in both of
those games. And so if you're Mike Norvell and Cruz,
you're looking at that tape and you're remembering what he
did against you, and you're thinking man, this kid's a playmaker.
He is an absolute headache. The problem was there was
a much bigger body of work, right, It was a
little bit more up and down, and he did make
some mistakes in some other games. And the one thing, too, Kyle,

(13:19):
that I've heard a lot, but how many times we heard, oh,
this is the quarterback that fits Gus Maleson's system. Like
we've heard that a bunch of times before, going back
to his time at UCF. There were other quarterbacks at
Auburn and they didn't always work out great. So, like
I've heard that narrative a bunch, I want to see
it work for once. And I do think one thing
that is a good news for Florida State is I

(13:40):
do think Gus Maleson being able to just focus on
the offense and just be the offensive coordinator kind of
get back to his roots. He doesn't have to worry
about managing the whole team. I think that could be
a good thing for Florida State. And it's one reason
I give him a little bit of a chance in
this Alabama game where they're, you know, almost a two
touchdown underdog, they'd better have some scheme stuff that some misdirection,

(14:00):
some stuff that Alabama hasn't seen and been able to
prepare for. Because Alabama definitely has the clear advantage on
the offensive and defensive lines. That's where Florida State's gonna
have to kind of pull some tricks out of their
hat to make that game competitive.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
Danny can't wait for the weekend. Thank you as always
for the time.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Brother.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
Enjoy yourself this weekend. We'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Appreciate it. Kyle, enjoy the games. We'll catch up soon.
