Speaker 1 (00:00):
We got David Teal back with us on a Monday,
Norfolk Virginian pilot here to talk a little Atlantic Coast
Conference football, and it's always good to have him. Mister Teal,
football is near, my friend.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
How you feeling, Kyle, You're going to be out there
at six am?

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Absolutely not?

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Absolutely absolutely not. I'll have the yearbut and I'll show
up sometime around ten o'clock at the end of the show.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
How's that all right?

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Well, it's good to have you back. It was great
to see you here in Charlotte.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Was that last week? Time flies, this time of year,
we can have whenever.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
That was.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
It was good to have you back, Good to see you.
A lot was said, A lot was done at acc kickoff.
And I actually want to start with Bill Belichick if
we can here for a second, because that was unlike
any other press you know, I've been to a lot
of press conference, is not as many as you, but
I haven't seen much like that in my career. The
place was packed and we were all still kind of
staring in disbelief that Bill Belichick was there as the

(00:53):
head coach of the North Carolina tar Heels earlier. I
guess yesterday he also announced that he's not ready to
declare there are a quarterback just yet out there in
Chapel Hill. I mean, just big picture, David. I don't
think we've talked about this on the show. What do
you think of what we've seen thus far? And what,
if anything, you expect from Bill Belichick's North Carolina tar Heels.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Well, first of all, Kyle, Yes, it was quite the circuit,
so much so that they brought Belichick in through a
back door into the main ballroom for his big press conference.
He did not walk in through the same door with
the players, where he might have had to encounter a

(01:36):
few more folks in the public and media. So I
thought that was interesting. And then his breakout session, they
put up risers for the cameras. Been going to these
things for many decades and never seen anything quite like it.
What to expect, Kyle, He's got seventy new players on

(02:00):
that roster. How does anyone have a pulse on what
the tar Heels may look like? And what is striking
to me is for so long, too long in my mind,
the storyline in Chapel Hill, and this is Carolina's fault,
This is Belichick's fault, This is the administration's fault. For

(02:22):
too long, the storyline was Jordan Hudson and Belichick's personal
life unnecessarily, so all he had to do was go
out there and talk about football. All he had to
do was go out there and make his players available
to the media. But no, they shut it down, and
then Jordan Hudson became the story. And then as the

(02:43):
summer has hit, it has turned on a dime and
now it's about the football as it should be, and
she is in the background as she should be. And
perhaps this is a good sign for the program.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
I mean, I said the other day, and I think
you'd probably agree with this if they'd hire John Sumral
from Tulane instead that you know, with seventy new players,
that we'd be talking about this team very differently. But
you know, because he's Bill Belichick, because he's the goat,
they get a massive benefit of the doubt.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
And we all understand why what about Clemson?

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Right?

Speaker 1 (03:17):
You know, these are the two biggest stories going into
acc kickoff, Belichick coaching college football and Dabbo and Clemson
looking like they might be, you know, at least capable
of summoning the mountaintop again because this is a very
talented roster. Eleven of twenty six preseason All acc Votes
players rather Clemson Tigers. I talked to Dabbo and I

(03:40):
asked him point blank if he feels like this roster
is reminiscent of his title teams, and he seems to
think that that might be the case. You you've seen
all those teams. As you look at this roster and
you know what's coming back, do you get the feeling
that you know Dabbo's got a special group on his hands.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
I think he could, Kyle. I think this is this
is roster capable of being the first Clemson team since
twenty nineteen to advance in the postseason. Now is Kate club, Nick,
Trevor Lawrence or Deshaun Watson? I'm not there yet. Are
Antonio Williams and Bryant westco? Are they? T Higgins and

(04:23):
Hunter red from not? And they certainly don't have Travis
etn Run in the football who's arguably the greatest running
back in the history of the league. So I would
tap the brakes a little bit there, but certainly a
capable roster and won with a lot of potential.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
What about the I don't know how you voted.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
But the second best team in this conference, that's to
me the most interesting conversation of all because to me,
it could be SMU, it could be Miami, it could
be Georgia Tech, it could be I think there's about
five or six teams that could lay claim to being
the next best team in this conference.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Who'd you go with?

Speaker 2 (05:01):
I would I would throw Louisville and that that you mentioned, Kyle,
I picked Miami. Uh, probably shame on me for by
buying the end of the Cane hype again, but I
just the problem last year clearly was defense. And bringing

(05:22):
Corey Heatherman in from from Minnesota as the new coordinator
I think will help tremendously. They've really really got a
talented group up front. You know, if Ruben Baine is healthy,
which from all accounts he is, and you've got a
Keen Mesador up there with him. Uh, that's a group

(05:45):
that could really live in opponent's backfields. And then you know,
is Carson Beck healthy and and if so that I
think Miami's got a real chance. And while you know,
we talked about Clemson and Miami about those Week one
matchups on back to back nights, Saturday night in Death

(06:06):
Valley with Clemson and LSU, and then the following night
down in South Florida with the Canes and Notre Dame.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
David Teel with us on the hotline here talking about
the ACC A year ago. At this time, there were
folks trying to convince me that my Hokies were, you know,
right up there as a dark horse to win this conference.
I hate to say it because it sounds cynical, but
I didn't buy it, and I want to buy it.
I want to believe that this program can get back
on track, but they're clearly not there yet. You mentioned

(06:36):
the big opening week, you know matchups we got Shane
Beemer in South Carolina against Brent Prye and Virginia Tech.
Would obviously love your thoughts on the game itself, but
you know, Brent Pride those guys. They failed to meet
expectations last year. If he goes out there and lays
another egg this year, what happens in Blacksburg at the
end of the year.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
I think there is most likely regime change, and lay
an egg can come in many forms. If they are
like five and seven, four eight, man, it seems untenable
to bring you back for year five, although the buyout

(07:16):
is pricing, you know, we're looking at seven million dollars.
And yeah, not only the opener against South Carolina, but
then having to come home week two on a short
week to face Diego PAVI and Vanderbilt, a team that
beats you in last year's season opener. A fascinating dynamic

(07:38):
in Blacksburg. They really they desperately need that program for
the entire athletic department, for the economy. I mean, you
know how much Virginia Tech football means to the New
River Valley and it needs to be percolating again, which
it clearly has up really for decade. They've been pedestrian

(08:02):
for a decade.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Yep, that's accurate.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Now the other Commonwealth team, I know we have a
lot of UVA fans and a lumps here in the
Charlotte area. You know, I'm a I'm a Tony Elliott
fan in that I really appreciate who he is as
a man, his journey to get to where he is.
I'd love your thoughts on you know, what was expected
of him when he got there. Obviously it's win football games,
but in terms of you know, remaking the program in

(08:26):
his image, his own offense, his own defense, getting his
own people in there, Like, how does that compare to
what he's done thus far? And how much pressure is
on Tony Elliott this year to go out and let's say,
at least make a.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Bowl game, Kyle?

Speaker 2 (08:41):
If not? Now when for Tony Elliott and UVA they
spent upward of twenty plus million dollars for this roster.
They brought in thirty two transfers, including Chandel of Morris,

(09:01):
the quarterback from North Texas who put up big numbers there.
And the schedule is arguably the weakest in the league.
Virginia is the only team that does not play Clemson,
s m U, or Miami. Virginia is the only team
that plays the bottom four squads from last season's standings,

(09:23):
and the non conference schedule is not challenging really beyond
a road game. Bear with me here at NC State,
which is a non conference game that Bukrgan and Carla
Williams Uh decide to play, and they'll play next season
in Charlottesville, also in the non conference. So it's got

(09:49):
to happen now, And I'm with you. His story is
absolutely admirable, But you look at where Bronco Menden all
at that program and where it is now, and it
has declined further under Tony Elliott in his four season.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
All Right, last thing, David, We got news out today
that the NCAA Tournament will not expand ahead of the
twenty twenty sixth season. They'll revisit it for twenty twenty seven.
I recalled Jim Phillips at his commissioner's address two weeks ago,
letting it be known, I mean, making it clear that
there's their support for expansion on the men's side, not

(10:31):
so much on the women's side. I don't know how
much that has to do with this, if anything, but
what are your thoughts on There's seeming to be some
momentum to expand the tournament, and all of a sudden, Nope,
we're not doing it, not at least until twenty twenty seven.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
I think it's because their TV partners are balking and
paying more money. And if the TV partners won't pay
more money, they're not going to expand because it's too
expensive to stage more games and more venues, and nobody
wants to take a haircut. Everybody's trying to figure out
how to compensate athletes, and oh, by the way, pay

(11:05):
the back damages for the House settlement, which the NCAA
is on the hook four and all these schools to
the tune. If you're a power for school, you're looking
at a million, million and a half a year that
you have to pay for back damages. So that's the
hold up, and I think it's the negotiations with the

(11:26):
TV partners that will determine the fate of expansion.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
David, always a pleasure. It's about that time of year.
I will see you in a press box soon, my man.
Thank you for the time, Hope.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
So Kyle, thank you,
