Speaker 1 (00:00):
And keeping with the fine tradition of w f Z listenership,
I could give you the hottest, most refined football take
that I have to offer, and it gets some response
that if I bring up sprite Maridid for Hamburger, it
turns into a free for all FanDuel text line. Eric
McClain of the ACC Network, former Clemson Tiger, is on
is on set with us here Jake Dickert, Wake Forest.
(00:21):
It's a thing, right, he says, it's a Wisconsin thing,
which I am finding that Wisconsin people don't necessarily sign
off of.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Exactly my dms were flooded from wisconsinites. I didn't even
know I had this many friends from Wisconsin saying, uh no, no,
we don't do that. So this is a coach dickerd
thing and we're gonna leave it to that.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
And I truly have to believe that this was stumbled
onto somebody fell into a bottle of sprite accidentally dumped
it onto a plated burger Damn lemon lime cheeseburgers.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Not that, not bad, not bad. I don't believe it.
Are you gonna try it? Kill? Yeah? Same, No, it
sounds terrible.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
I'm good on all that now I also, you know,
I have to give a little bit of a hard time.
I'm to our friend here, Will Palachik Whui and listen.
I don't even talk I haven't even talked to Will
about this this morning, but the Morning show made it
a thing. You know, Will is bragging to our our
buddy Josh over here this morning, but he leg presses
four hundred and seventy pounds.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
In addition to being an ACC network analyst and former
Clemson Tiger, you also host multiple podcasts, one of which
is a Strengthened conditioning based podcast, which is fairly new.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Feel free to than no, no, it's awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Feel free to plug away on that, but give your
assessment of a late thirties man bragging about leg pressing
four hundred and seves.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Okay, so that was gonna be My first question is
eighty plus years old? Why he's not let's get replayed tomorrow.
Was he saying he's single leg pressed four hundred not
bo both leg both sticks? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Bro, keep that to yourself. It's not fun. That's not cool.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Next time I'm in Charlotte, we can work out together.
We'll work on that. Okay, we'll put at least uh,
you know, seven eight nine before we start telling anybody
that we're doing it, work in darkness and then shine later.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Yes, my type of thing.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Okay, so just for for the point of reference with
the guys out there, then we'll talk some actual football.
Uh you're a big beefy man. Yeah, I know, you
get after in the weight room. You're doing everything back squad.
What what's what's your max?
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Right now?
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Right now?
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Better question prop four O five Like I'm not you know,
I don't need to do more than that. You want
to you want to preserve the knees, Yeah, because I mean,
you know it is a little dangerous, but I mean
leg press, I mean a thousand plus pounds, That's what
I said. Because it's safer, it's different, you know it
is for seventy though. Cool, that's sick, dude. Hey, he's
(02:35):
working out though. I'm proud of him for working out.
Let's swing this back around, keep going. There's a lot
of room to grow. Yes, we're proud of you for
working out. That's that's a big deal.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
And I was even gonna make this a big deal
with that guy right here, and he put me up
to it. So anyway, I didn't want to ask you
about something else too. There is a report out and
we're gonna call it that from Inside Carolina on Threes
picked it up that that the tar Heels are amongst
several schools aiming to get out of the ACC and
land in the SEC. My perspective on this is that,
all due respect to those guys, I don't know what's
(03:07):
new about that report.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
What do you think, Well, water's wet? Yeah cool, so
is everybody else. I don't know if there's no more
other if there's no further details, or like like, is
Greg sink you here?
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Is he here somewhere the rafters? He doing the deal? Yeah? Sure?
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Great?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Why not? Why wouldn't you explore that it's just good business? Yeah? Cool?
Speaker 2 (03:29):
I don't think there's anything else to it. And like
I said, who's not exploring that?
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (03:34):
I mean, looksten I My response to that the last
couple of years has been the ACC just needs to
be better as the football conference, and I think that
that will solve most of its problems. I don't know, like,
how deep do you think this conference runs this year?
How many good teams are in the ACC?
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Well?
Speaker 2 (03:46):
You know, it's interesting, you know, talking with a lot
of these head coaches, a lot of said, we feel
as good as we have since maybe twenty nineteen. That's
a long time. It's twenty twenty five, and for them
to say they feel the best at they have since
then is pretty substantial. And again, I think what's interesting
more interesting about this is you look around the entire
(04:07):
country Ohio State, new quarterback, Georgia, new quarterback, Alabama new quarterback,
Notre Dame, new quarterback, Texas, like there's some turnover happening
and there's some advantage to be taken of, and can
you win when it's a down year? I mean, all
still very good arts Manning is at Texas, high expectations
(04:27):
for him from a lot of different people, so on
and so forth, all those teams I mentioned. But if
you're an experienced team that has a quarterback and has
other guys around you, do you feel pretty good? So
I think the top is pretty clear. The Tigers. I
think there's a gap there just because of the knowns
and unknowns. Miami maybe a slight gap, maybe not with
SMU Louisville. I like Georgia Tech a lot, maybe more
(04:49):
than others. And then after that you're looking at a
Pittsburgh can they stand up? They have a lot of
talent back, got a quarterback back. N C State being
really slept on right now, dude, being really slept on
right now. You know, teams of that nature. Syracuse very
hard schedule. It's just unfortunate timing for them, I think.
But there's some depth and there's some fun quarterback play
in this league.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
I agree. And you specific to Miami. You know, camp
Moore's off to the NFL. Carson becks there now, I
know Carson can play, like we've seen evidence of that
at Georgia.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
I don't know that.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
I'm a real listen, I'm never a believer in Miami
if I'm being honest about things, but like, I know
they'll be good. Like what do you think Carson Beck
achieves in the ACCX.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, Well, the interesting thing is at this point in
time a year ago, he was the number one overall pick, right,
he was Dean the guy, and so you know, can
you get back to that? And I think there was
a lot of reasons for that at Georgia last year.
A lot of drops, maybe the most or some of
the most in the entire country. The injury, of course,
and you know, maybe just trying to force things a
little bit too much, which we see quarterbacks do, try
(05:52):
to be superman when you don't have to be. How
can you move on from that? And really, to be honest,
I don't think he fit at Georgia at all. I mean,
this is a guy driving a Lamborghini in Athens. They
one f one fifties from their quarterbacks. Miami, they're cool
with Lambeau, So it's fit wise, you know, I think
there's something to that. And hearing it from his teammates,
hearing from his coach that you know, he's a leader
(06:13):
and he's been doing this, and that we didn't hear
that from Georgia. You're hearing it now. Whether it's all
fabricated or not, we'll see. But I think there's some
juice there. There's some uncertainty with the pass catchers, right, Like,
that's a big deal. Six of your best are gone. Yeah,
you know, either transferred, moved on to the NFL or whatever.
But the biggest thing is your offense and defensive line
should be amongst the best in the country, right and
(06:35):
you should be able to dominate relatively every game you
play there. If you play to your full ability. The
run games should be sick from Miami. So those three
things I know to be true. It's kind of the
fluff around it. How good can Miami be? Mario cristoball
has done nothing but Bill five seven ten? What's next?
Speaker 3 (06:54):
It's time to compete for championships.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Eric McClain acc network with us here on set. A
couple of quick things. I'll let you go. You know,
I was in the Bill Belichick press conference a couple
of hours ago. I've been in a lot of those,
and you hear about the fullback. I did hear about
the full but you know, I've been in a lot
of press conferences.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Most of them don't stand out. That one did.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Kind of felt like a big show trial, Like, you know,
hundreds of people in the room. All of a sudden,
he and the players walk in, A hush comes over
the crowd. I think there was just this kind of
disbelief that we're looking at Bill Belichick, head coach of
the North Carolina tar Heels. Then you get him on
the set, looked like it went well. What do you
think of his demeanor, his presence and what he said
about his team?
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah, you know, I didn't know what to expect from him, right,
because you see this hard dude for his entire career
that you know, halfway answers questions to the media, doesn't
like doing media, doesn't want any part of it. Now
we're forcing him, you know, to forcing him, you know,
to be here and to do that. And he smiled,
he laughed, He was funny, He had great answers, had
great stories, and you know, I think at the end
(07:50):
of the day, it's our job as analysts, as talent
to get that out of him. You know, if you
historically know the guy doesn't like it, will ask questions
that will get him to like it, and you know,
try to lean into that, make good TV, make a
great first impression. And I think we accomplished that. And
to be able to talk about coaching with his sons,
to be able to talk about getting into college football,
(08:11):
which apparently has been a dream of his forever. You know,
his dad coaching at Navy for fifty years, growing up
at for a college football coach's son, you know, so
just fun things about that. And really, at the end
of the day, this dude has seventy new players, he's
had a brand new place. Who the heck now even
if he told us he's lying, he doesn't know. He
has no clue, right, and maybe not lying, but he
(08:32):
just doesn't know. So it's gonna be we're all gonna
find out at the same time Monday night in front
of the whole world, you know, Monday night football there
as TCU comes to town. You feel bad for Sunny
Dyke's a little bit. He's in this now a couple
of times in a row with Colorado and now with
these guys, so it's, uh, it's gonna be intriguing. But
you know, I'm excited to see what they're able to do.
(08:53):
And you know, it's cool that he's here. It's good
for the league that he's here. There's clearly a lot
of attention. You know, ESPN's like createing a show to
go to that game, which is super unique for our league,
and it's a benefit.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
It is now.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
Last thing, you know, I was here Tuesday morning as
you were, for Jim Phillips opening address and he's urging
other conferences leaders to adhere to the new rules, to
the new system, which is still kind of coming together
right right, But that house settlement, that's twenty and a
half million dollars. Everybody has this allotted amount of money
that they can spend. The guys we have to spend
it and no more because we can't undermine this system.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Do you believe that?
Speaker 1 (09:28):
And then factoring in the College Sports Commission and Brian
Sealy and all these things, like do you think we're
nearer to you know, uniformity in some way?
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Well you got that twenty and a half million. And
then a new court case came out yesterday or the
day before saying that you can still pay from outside
third party resources. So there is no rules. It's the
wild wild West. There's nothing that you can do. There's
no uniformity at all. And it's unfortunate, right because you
want everybody to play by the same rules, and so
(09:55):
how do you get there? You know? Is it a
baby NFL? Is it a whole new division? I don't know,
but I do not like that. We have different things
by state, we have different things by conference, we have
different things by team. And let's play by the same
rules and let's have enforceable, actionable punishments.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Yeah, I was funny.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
We're talking with Bill o'brant, like we have all these
NFL coaches now it's hilarious. Uh, in the acc and
talking with him and he said, you know, there's real
ramifications if you go outside of the rule book in
the NFL that doesn't exist here.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
What's the enforcement?
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Who?
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Okay? Great? What happens?
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (10:31):
And so draft picks? You know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (10:33):
So it's, uh, we're in a weird spot. Hopefully we
figure it out. Can the NCAA do it?
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Know? Who will it be? Yeah, that's what I'm interested
to see.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
This really isn't an in depth question, but the most
swagger of any head coach so far this week, it
has to go to Brent Key. Right, my god, what
a suit? Yea, the Great, the Great?
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Watch dude. Really it's like one hundred thousand dollars watch stop? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Man? Really that dude, he says, I'm a redneck with money.
What do you expect you've seen us? No? One hundred
thousand plus dollar truck. I mean this dude, he's living
the life we all wish we had. Ooz it swag swag,
the chains, the bracelets, the wise ray Gator.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Yeah. Man, he's a badass.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
There's very few coaches that if I ever stop this,
what I want to coach Dabo Sweeney, him red Lashly
is short list. There may be a couple of others,
but that's the short list of guys i'd be interested in.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Well, you former offensive lineman. Have to be especially proud
to know him and Mario doing a service here for
us in the league.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Hey, Eric McLain, acc Network, former Clemson Tiger with us
Mondays in the football it's him and Steve Smith.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
You're here city on Mondays. I've bet like that company.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Why would you not be here every Monday for that?
Thank you, brother, Appreciate you always, Eric McLain, He'll be
with us here in a couple of weeks when college
football gets fired up with us here on Radio Row.
