Speaker 1 (00:00):
We have Fran Brown, not just Syracuse head coach, but smoke,
what else is Fran Brown?
Speaker 2 (00:05):
What is Fran Brown to you?
Speaker 3 (00:06):
A legend of the Western Carolina Catamouts football program. Was
on the team in two thousand and four when they
defeated Appalachian State and he got to kiss the Old
Mountain Jug.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
So that's the main part.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
And he also beat Furman in two thousand and five,
which was a massive upset.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Okay, by the way, that was not me that snickered.
Flounder turned on his microphone. He's engineering Flounder turned on
his microphone just to snicker at you when you said that.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
It just amazes me how he I mean, he knows
everything about Western Carolina from the early two thousands. It's
yet another thing that's in the Smoke handbook of things
that he knows that you don't think he should now.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Well, I was at that game. So you were at
the four game for the Old Mountain Jug. Is that
what you're talking about?
Speaker 5 (00:48):
Really?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
My grandma's had season tickets forever. My brother was like
eleven months old. My mom had to go to the park.
Western Carolina was down two touchdowns, looked like two or
three minutes. Okay, all the time out because we got
to dicycle him in here, and he got here and
like I think he already is kind of up to speed.
Fran Brown, head football coach of the Syracuse aren't here
with us. You're on in Charlotte right now, by the way,
So you know that's what's up. It's good to see.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
I've been looking forward to this since they put you
on my schedule a couple of days ago. We got
a guy back in the studio, my producer, right, so
we're hearing Charlotte. You know, the Catamounts don't get a
ton of run here in the Queen City, but because
of this guy, they get more than they probably.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Would any other way.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
We appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
I mean, this is a die hard Western Carolina fan,
and every time I mentioned your name on the air,
he make sure to remind the audience that you are
Catamount proud.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Fran Brown head coach at Syracuse.
Speaker 6 (01:31):
Absolutely, I mean it's a lot. I think I heard
y'all talking about the at State game. Oh four yeah
fo yeah four at Western Carolina?
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yeah is that? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:40):
He was there for that game at Western Carolina. So listen,
before we played them, that week before they was on
a terror. Right, they had this kid named Devon Falkes.
He was a receiver like led the country. Yeah, the
week before they played us, he had twenty two catches
for like two hundred and seventy yards. Seriously, he was killing.
The quarterback was Richie Williams. I mean you remember that
they was on the run. They was beating everybody. Yeah,
(02:03):
they came and played as we ended up beating them.
I asked the coach, let me stick him, and I
was like, let me stick him. I got to stick
him everywhere. He had four catches for thirty two yards.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Really, you shut it down. You clamped him.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
I literally did. That's the only thing I will talk
about that day.
Speaker 6 (02:15):
I strapped him that day, right, really shut him down,
and he had four for thirty two and we ended
up beating him. We end up winning. They tore the
gold post down, threw it in the river. It was
wild that night. It was pretty cool to be able
to play against them though.
Speaker 5 (02:29):
It was good.
Speaker 6 (02:30):
Then the next year up there at app State they
beat the brakes off of us. I'm talking about that, well, yeah,
it was it was pretty cool playing this.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Yeah, they like how much I'm sure you remember plenty
about your playing days, but like what do you treasure
the most from those days back at you know, in
college playing at Western Carolina.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Relationships.
Speaker 6 (02:45):
Yeah, I got to see Lamar Barnes, who was a
captain with me the other day. One of my brothers
was going through something. He called me on the phone
the other night. Late called him the next morning. Just
talking to those dudes. Man, you know, I'm just still
the relationship and letting them know I'm the same dude. Right,
they needs something made me up, like let's talk, like,
let's be there for each other, right, Let's pray for
(03:06):
each other, be around each other. So there's no relationships man,
And just for me from up North coming all the
way to Western Carolina.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
Man, those dudes accepting me with open arms from.
Speaker 6 (03:17):
South Carolina and North Carolina and Charlotte my boys, and
Charlotte wants to sell them just everywhere Durham, like, man,
everybody accepted me with open arms and their families did,
so I was able to go and just being around
with everybody, and that meant a lot to me to
be able to come down here. So Western Carolina and
Catamount will forever have a special place in my heart.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
So I guess was that the place where the seeds
were planted, where, Hey, I'm going to be a head
coach one day?
Speaker 2 (03:42):
When did that happen for you?
Speaker 5 (03:44):
No, that wasn't wasn't. I was going to the league.
I was getting yea like everything going.
Speaker 6 (03:49):
It was just getting the opportunity to do it right,
just after getting cut from playing the league and then
getting a chance to just start working kids out, not
really knowing.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
You know, I'll go to college.
Speaker 6 (04:00):
We all got an education, but I didn't get to
go work in my field, the criminal justice major.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
So trying to figure out what to do.
Speaker 6 (04:06):
And then I was watching people that were in a
head coach position. I'm like, oh, if he could do it, yeah,
I'm doing that.
Speaker 5 (04:13):
Nah. I focused lily, like, this is what I want
to do. I'm going that way. That's my route. Yeah,
one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I'm going that way, no doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Well, and I was just looking back over your resume here,
Fran Brown, head coach at Syracuse with us here live
on radio, row Simple Baylor, Rutgers, Georgia. Obviously before you
got the job. Shane Beember, South Carolina is a friend
of mine. Have known it for a long time and
he you know, his resume and leading up to his
first head coaching job was really impressive. I look at
the places you've been, the guys that you've worked for, Like,
you know, how much were you molded at those places?
(04:40):
And you know what stands out in terms was you
know that's shaping you into the coach you are today.
Speaker 6 (04:44):
I think I took a little from everybody, yeah, naturally,
but of course, honestly, I'm just myself. I think I
was elite recruiting on every one of those staffs. Yeah,
or wherever I was, it was always the best guy
on the staff when it come.
Speaker 5 (04:55):
To and recruiting.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Why do you think that is, by the way, because.
Speaker 6 (04:58):
I'm myself just like sit here talking and you feel
comfortable understanding. I know who I am. So I'm not
trying to impress anybody. I'm just being myself consistently in that.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
It's just pretty cool, funny, how simple that is.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Right, I mean, it's the easiest thing to do.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
A lot of guys.
Speaker 6 (05:13):
I watch so many people try to be everybody else
and it doesn't work for them, and then they try
to switch back to themselves. Now, people think you being fake, right,
But that's all alone, that's who you are, right.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Yeah, Guys who don't get like being you twenty four
to seven is actually a benefit to you, Like just
being yourself.
Speaker 6 (05:27):
All the time, absolutely, you know, just all the time,
just always being myself.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
I'm gonna go back to the offseason because I've been,
you know, beating the drum for years. I'm a diehard
college football fan. I've always wanted to have you know,
preseason kind of like you know, not just scrimmages. But
you know, I think your idea was you and Dion
were talking about the spring game and getting together. I've
loved that idea. Why do you think there's so much
push back to that? Why do you think that they
don't it was new? Yeah, I wasn't sure how to
do it. What was gonna be the benefits?
Speaker 6 (05:52):
That was everyone gonna get the same opportunity to go
and do it, and since some people had already been
done with their fifteen games things that nature, they just
didn't want to push it that way.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Okay, that makes sense. Fran Brown Syracuse with US here
on Radio US. Let's talk about your team with ten
and three last year. Really, you know, just a football
team that I thought was really fun to watch. I mean,
what did you what were you most proud of last year?
With that team? Every years different, what were your most
proud of?
Speaker 6 (06:16):
That's how they came together. They all listened to everything
that I wanted to get done. Me growing through the losses, right,
me being there for them during the losses, showing them
why we lost and being able to understand and know
that a lot of them was because of the coaching,
not the players, right, So just being able to teach
them that.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
After that, the big Miami win last year, Like, how
big was that for your program?
Speaker 4 (06:39):
That?
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Like, I know they're all supposed to weigh the same,
but like some wins are different than others, right yeah,
come back and everything else.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
I mean, it was good.
Speaker 6 (06:46):
It was great to show them that we can overcome adversity,
that we fight, that we will continue to fight, and
that we could play with some of the best teams
in college football.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
Right yeah.
Speaker 6 (06:57):
Miami was arguably the best team in college football. They
had the first person picked in the draft, right, so
it shows how good they were and a lot of
other players that were really good.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
Just showed that we can compete and play against those guys.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
You also, like you demonstrated with Kyle McCord, like what
the offense could be. It's one of the best offenses
to watch Saturday to Saturday. How do you keep that
continuity going. I know you've been asked about the quarterback battle.
You know we can talk about that, but like just
from year to year, how do you keep that foundation
in place?
Speaker 6 (07:23):
Keep keep fixing it, keep making it better, keep it going,
keep it going, keep making it better. Not try to
just say, well, this is what we do. How do
we fix it, How do we get better? How do
we fix it? How do we get better? Add new
pieces to the offense, bring new people in, right, just
keep being able to do that and not if you
get complacent quick there's no complacency, Like you're not allowed
(07:45):
to you get complacent at all place. You ain't gonna
like me. That's just not the spot to be. That's
not who I am. I'm wired a little bit different.
I'm very chill off the field. But as soon as
we get to the field that were in the meeting
rooms this business.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Yeah you got a transfer from no or damn a
transfer melosue right, Angelly Collins, Like, what do you you're trying
to figure out who your starting quarterback is going to be.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
How do you test them? Like what obviously we hear
about the quarterback.
Speaker 5 (08:10):
So Ricky and Ricky's leading right now.
Speaker 6 (08:11):
But Ricky and Steve they're gonna both take all the
one in two reps the entire first sixteen days.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
We'll find out after that.
Speaker 6 (08:21):
They just gonna compete, right, It's going in every every position,
not just the Every position is competing. Like no one's safe,
you know what I mean. So it's like, let's go
to work, including myself. I better not mess up. There's
things that I gotta do in camp, and I gotta
I gotta grow in camp, right, offensive coordinator gott to
grow in camp, the defensive court. Everybody got to grow
in camp, not just the players gotta grow. We gotta
(08:43):
grow so they keep growing. If we don't grow, you
can think that that they got better. Now you just
didn't grow. You stayed the same, So you think they
got better because you're not evolving, right, You gotta continue
to evolve, like evolve or die, right, I mean, it's
just the way it is. You gotta keep evolving so
that way things work is so Fran.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Brown head coach at Syracuse with us here on Radio ROW.
I don't want to keep you all day, but I
do want to ask you. I mean, I was in
the Commission's address yesterday morning listening to Jim Phillips talk
about the state of the ACC how important it is
for you know, this conference to have a good year,
and it feels like we've said that ahead of the
season the last couple of years. But now there's a
perception that this conference is a bit behind the SEC
or the Big Ten. I know coaches and players wouldn't
(09:21):
agree with that, but you know, overall your thoughts on
this being a quote unquote big season for the ACC
and in the depth of the conference.
Speaker 6 (09:28):
I think, oh, the conference is cool. I mean, that's
just that's all opinion, right. I think we'll a good conference.
We've got good quarterbacks in this conference. We got a
tough non conference schedule, right. They say it's the strongest
in the country, whatever that may mean, right, Yeah, I
think it's just opinion. Right, at the end of the year,
you'll find out who it is, right, You'll find out
(09:48):
who was the best conference at the end of the year.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
For sure.
Speaker 6 (09:50):
Giving us all the fair opportunity to compete against each other.
I'm going out competing day in and day out. But like,
who's developing the kids, Like who's developing them as men?
Right they leave college? What are they doing? Like what's
happening right? Or is it just about what happened on
the field. And that's what gives you the mark about
he's great because of this, Like you know what I mean,
(10:11):
it's some guys that are Division three programs, D one,
Double A programs that are truly developing men, right, And
those dudes are going out and they're good fathers, their
good husbands, all the things of that nature. And I
think when you're looking at the academic standpoint, I think
our conference does an extremely well job of that. We
match up with anybody academically, right, Yeah, And I'm just
(10:32):
I'm excited to be a part of. Like some of
the better coaches in the country are in this conference
right when you start, Dabbo Sweeney, We got Belichick here, now,
I mean, it's so many guys that are in this conference.
Mario Cristobal, you know, I mean he's been coaching forever.
You got Bill O'Brien, the NFL coach, NFL head coach.
I mean, there's so many coaches in this conference that
(10:53):
are really good. Coach at SMU s CHA I mean,
there's so many guys in this conference that could be
coaching anywhere right, could be in the NFL coach, it
could be other spots. So for me, I'm just thankful
that my good opportunity to coach into such a prestigious conference.
But I think at the end of the year, you'll
see who we are. Our commissioner cares a lot. I
(11:15):
think our strickling, our assistant commissioner there, I think he
cares a lot also, So when you got a bunch
of people that care, now it's just we got to
all build the trust and we'll be fine.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
All right.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Last thing, real quick.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Not everybody gets the big opening weekend game to start
the season. You get Tennessee down Atlanta. What does that
mean for your program?
Speaker 6 (11:31):
Yeah, we get a big opportunity. With a big opportunity,
you better put on your big boys shoes. You know
what I'm saying. You see what they do everybody at
the beginning of the year, right.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Yeah, Yeah, So we'll be all right, though, Yeah, I appreciate.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Look, I was looking forward.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
To meeting you.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
I appreciate it, appreciate you. I appreciate the conversation.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
Yeah, be safe, man, there you go.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Fran brown head football coach Syracuse Starren't stopping by the table.
