Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by Victory
Chevy Charlotte. Want to drive a sweet Silverado trail Boss
like KB Go to Victory Chevy Charlotte dot com.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
It is the twenty third annual wufn Z Street Turkeys.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Baby, we are back.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
It's Street Turkeys number nine for yours truly, and I
am excited as ever to get this thing. Roland, the
Boys in the Morning, Back and Bone on through Colin
and Shrappy and of course the Great West and Walker
and now we bring it home. We are the final
leg of the race. If you will to raise as
much money, collect as much food as possible to help
our friends here in the Greater Charlotte region our neighbors,
(00:59):
feed them, you know, to feed our neighbors and friends
this holiday season. Our friends at Second Harvest Food Bank,
Metro Lina Norrish Up, they are here. They are on
the corner of Minton Morehead taking physical cash donations and
collecting the food. And of course if you can, we'd
love to see you.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
I've seen so many people out here already. We've had
listeners coming throughout the day. Shout out again to who's
your Bobby he's a regular caller and listener on the show.
But every year that guy is standing on the corner
of Minton Morehead with his panthers Santa hat on and
he is collecting money. He's got the headphones on, he's
listening to WFNZ all day and he is out here
collecting cash from passers by drivers coming through the intersection.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
We appreciate him deeply and all of you.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
So bring us a frozen turkey, bring us canned goods,
bring us boxed foods, and if you can, if you
can't get here, but if you can donate monetarily. Tech
Street turkeys all one word street turkeys to five zero one,
five to five. So the number to type in like
the phone number. This can be confusing for some people
over the year, so I try to hit this as
often as I can off the top. You know, it's
(02:02):
not like you know the phone number you're texting is
five zero one, five to five. In the body of
that text, make it street turkeys all one word. Capitalization
doesn't matter. Street turkeys to five zero one, five to five.
Here's the deal. We are closing in on twenty four
thousand dollars donated so far. You know it's it's a
(02:22):
personal goal of mine to get to forty thousand dollars
if we can. We have crossed that threshold at least
twice since I've been a part of this, and every
year can be different, you know. We know every year
there are different economic conditions and things like that. A
lot of you are very charitable people anyway, and you
give to other institutions and other philanthropic organizations other efforts,
and we love that about you and we appreciate that.
(02:44):
But we need you to step up with us here
on this twenty third annual Street Turkeys. So text Street
Turkeys to five zero one five five to give monetarily.
We need to get about sixteen thousand dollars in the
bank in the kitty over the next I'm gonna say
three hours, but I'll be for four with Hornets pre
game from six to seven, so we might be able
to sneak in some overtime donations as well. Here's the
(03:06):
simple math. I need thirty four hundred people out there,
and Lord knows we have a lot more listeners than
thirty four hundred people. If thirty four hundred of you
texted in a five dollars donation right now.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
We'd get there, right. We would be there.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
If seventeen hundred of you, all right, text me a
ten dollars donation, we'd get there right.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
So this is simple stuff.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Just hey, skip the extra beer tonight at the bar,
or don't let me just be charitable, that's fine. Five dollars,
ten dollars. If I could get a bunch of you
texting five to ten dollars donations, we would get there
in no time. You get the math right, twenty dollars donation,
so on and so forth. But five ten twenty bucks,
if you got it, text Street Turkeys to five zero one,
five to five, and let's make a difference here. On
(03:49):
the twenty third annual WFNZ Street Turkeys, Smoke is connecting
us with Kay Carter of Second Harvest Food Bank. As
we speak, we'll get her on the air to talk
about this annual tradition and spirit of giving that we
do on Thanksgiving Eve each and every year. We'll talk
to Kay Carter. Also coming up later in the show,
Al pardon me, I'm over here choking as I'm trying
(04:11):
to do some good on a Wednesday. Coming up at
three forty five, Al Wallace, former Panthers defensive end. We'll
talk Panthers Rams. We'll talk Panthers in forty nine ers
on Monday Night Football with him. Also later in the show,
Roman Harper, two time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champion, SEC
Network analyst, back for his Wednesday conversation. We'll talk with
him here on this twenty third Anvil Street Turkeys about
(04:33):
all the great college football action coming up this weekend
on rivalry Weekend. And speaking of that, I heard somebody earlier.
Forget who it was, was it. It might be might
have been Fitty who said it was the best weekend
of college football in the calendar year. I don't know
if I agree with that. In some ways, I can
see the argument. But at the same time, you know,
(04:54):
this is the one that also makes me sad because
we are this close to college football being over. So
I don't know if it's the best. I'm pretty partial
to the way that college football opens up its season
and the opening week.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
I don't know this is going to be a good one, though, man.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
And there's a lot of great rivalry games that we
have to talk about, and we will do that coming
up here in just a bit.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
But right now, we head out to the hotline and we.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Welcome in as we do every year on this show
on this day, the CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank
of Metrolina, Kay Carter, is with us here on a
very special day.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Kay, how are you? We appreciate the time.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Hey, I'm doing great. How are y'all doing?
Speaker 5 (05:30):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (05:31):
It's always a good day, k when we get to
do this.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
We've been at it for a long time, you included,
and you know it's always fun to get together on
this day every year to try to make an impact
in our community. What fires you up about this event
in particular every year?
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Well, you know this has been going on. I was
trying to remember how many years. I think it's twenty three,
twenty three, yep, yeah, and I think I've I've been
around for twenty two of those now twenty one or
twenty two. And it's just fun. You know, it's a
great atmosphere to be out on the street and people
are collecting and stopping by, and you know, having all
(06:05):
those great snacks that y'all have laid out. But I
mean the big thing is just knowing that you're feeding
families that might not have a Thanksgiving meal so you know,
nothing makes me happier than feeding people. That's just sure.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Now I come from a family of people who feel
the exact same way. How would you describe your efforts
so far in twenty twenty five and you know how
you're set up to help people here around the holiday season.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Well, you know, every year it seems like the meat
is greater and greater. We've we've had quite a quite
a few things factoring into that this year, like we
always do, and we're just getting out as many food
boxes as we can, as many turkeys as we can.
We've been distributing turkeys all throughout the month of November,
you know, at our various school distributions and through our
(06:53):
emergency pantries and you know, just tens and tens of
thousands of turkeys, and you know, and the thing for
me is that every one of those is a meal,
you know, for a family in our community that might
not have had a Thanksgiving meal without it. And so
it just keeps us going. And because we have great
partners like w f n Z and Round Pavement, we
(07:16):
get to have a whole bunch more turkeys to give out.
So we're super excited to see what the results are today.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
How I guess here in radio, we measure our success
in ratings and podcasts, downloads and streams and revenue and
things like that. What are the metrics that you judge
your success by at Second Harvest Food Back.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
Well, one hundred percent. How many people we seed, you know,
is the number one. And then of course you know,
that's followed really closely by the amount of nutritious food
that we're putting out there, because we don't want to
just put out any food. We want to put out
food that's healthy for people, like fresh produce and meat
and protein and eggs and dairy and all of those
(07:57):
kinds of things. So we kind of track our elves
based on the number of people we're helping, but also
the quality of the food that we're helping them with.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Okay, Carter CEO Second Harvest Food Bank Metrolina with us
here on the twenty third annual WFNZ Street Turkeys powered
by Ram Pavement. As far as the need goes in
the city, you're touching on it with everything we talk
about here, but you know, the families that come to you,
the sources of you know, things that you're offering them,
But you know, where are the folks coming from.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
You've talked a lot over the.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Years about the profile of the people that come to
seek your assistance and your help this time it may
not always be what people expect, right.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Well, it absolutely isn't you know. I think that there
are a lot of misconceptions about people that are hungry.
You know, most of the people that we come in
contact with are families that are are working. You know,
the parents are working, but they're just not making enough
to pay for everything that they need. You know, they
can't manage the rent, you know, the food, the clothing,
(09:00):
and you know, when families are living on really tight
budgets and something goes wrong in the household, you know,
somebody gets sick or misses some more, or the car
breaks down or you know, they're just things that happen
to people in real life and they're not always you know,
able to recover from that. And that's where our emergency
pantries come in. And we have so many seniors that
(09:22):
live on fixed incomes and so you know, their incomes
don't go up as prices go up, or as cold
weather comes and utility costs go up, and the price
of their medications go up, and so you know, those
are kind of our lived experiences. So many children, you know,
in the families that we help, We serve a lot
(09:43):
of veterans, you know, that that have issues from from
the time that they spend in combat. You know, it
just really runs a whole range of folks. But the
thing that they all have in common in my in
my mind is they're neighbors and they just need to
hand up.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Now, Listen, we have people here collecting food, collecting donations
all day. We have a lot of generous listeners that
are going to bring by the food and make the
monetary donations.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
But as you're telling us here.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Obviously the holidays you've got a highlighted, very particular need,
But hunger doesn't stop outside the holiday season. For folks
that want to get involved outside of you know, the
months of November and December.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
What's the best way?
Speaker 4 (10:26):
So visit our website, which is Second Harvest Metrolina dot
org and you can learn how to have a food drive,
you can learn how to donate safely online, you can
learn how to volunteer. Pretty much any question that you
might have about us, you know, might be answered on
that website, and we would encourage people to do the
(10:48):
same for our partner in this event and to rush up.
You know, there are our largest food pantry partner in
Macknburg County and we work hand in hand with them
all the time, and so you know, by all means,
look us up, find out how you can help you
around because you know, when we really need the help
is all the time, not just at the holidays. So
(11:11):
you make a great point with.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
That, all right, So before I let you go, then
for anybody out there listening who might be in need
of assistance, you know, who might need that hand up
that meal for the family this holiday season. It's close,
I mean Thanksgivings tomorrow. Maybe they've been putting it off,
maybe they didn't want to ask. Where can they go
right now to get the assistance that they need?
Speaker 4 (11:30):
Yeah, again, go to our website and we have a
tool on there that you can go and it'll say
if you need help, you know, punch this button right
and it'll take you to a page where it will
ask you for your ZIP code and once you tite
that zip code in, it will give you a list
(11:51):
for resources within a very short distance. I don't know
which of our pantries are still open you know at
this point, sure on the day before Thanksgiving, but that
information would all be online and I think that would
probably be the best way that they could get held.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Great, Kay, we appreciate you as always.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Happy Thanksgiving, Thank you for what you do for the community,
and we'll talk to you very soon.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Happy Holidays, Ah, same to you, Thanks so much of.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Course, Kay Carter, CEO, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina
our partner here for the twenty third annual WFNZ Street
Turkeys presented by Ram Pavement the Doghouse powered by Jack Daniels.
Of course, we opened up shop at six am this morning.
We'll be here, I guess technically until six. I'm here
a little bit later than that. Hornets pre game tonight.
By the way, New York Nixon Town Hornets and Knicks
(12:40):
pregame at six. Didn't mean for that to Ryan with
myself and Willie p He's filling in for t Bone tonight,
so we've got an hour of Hornets pre game. So
we might be able to take some overtime overflow donations too,
as I'm sure we'll have some people out and about
listening and you know, making last minute Thanksgiving runs and
things like that.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
But here's the deal.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
We started the show fourteen minutes ago at about twenty
four thousand dollars raised. My goal every year is to
hit at least forty thousand dollars, and I think we
could very easily get there. Like I said, the math
breaks down simply by my account, we need thirty four
hundred people out there listening, and I know there are
more than thirty four hundred of you out there listening
right now. To give a five dollars donation, you do that,
(13:18):
We're there. Seventeen hundred people. Give me a ten dollars donation.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
We're there.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
We move past that threshold and that goal right, Give
me eight hundred and fifty people with a twenty dollars donation.
We're getting there. You get the point, right, Tech Street
Turkey's all one word to five zero one, five to five.
That is five zero one, five to five. And we'll
talk more about it throughout the course of the show.
Al Wallace coming up in thirty minutes. We'll talk some
(13:43):
panthers with him. Haven't said good afternoon. You have to smoke, Ludwig.
I know you came up here. And made your annual donation.
Good on you brother. What's going on, Howard? Thanks nothing much.
Speaker 6 (13:51):
It just you know, it's that time of the year
where everyone's feeling thankful, and we're just trying to make
sure that everyone else that is less fortunate also feels thankful.
They're in this great holiday and you know it's gonna
get a little bit colder, so tomorrow you also want
to help everybody that's in need with it being dropping
what twenty thirty degrees compared to what it is right now. Yeah,
so you just want everyone to make sure that you
(14:12):
have the same great holiday that we all have too.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
So that's the main goal for tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
All right, what's the what's the Ludwig family? What's the plan?
What's the tradition? How do you spend your Thanksgiving Tomorrow?
Speaker 6 (14:23):
We go over to our second cousin's house and have
something jack Man, No, no, Mom's side to family, that's
dad side, that's Christmas. But you know, we go over there,
we eat at around anywhere from twelve thirty to one thirty,
just depends on the year, and then you kind of
go back some years we kind of did Black Friday
shop and just more of a watch the Chaos type
(14:45):
of thing, but ever since Black Friday has not really
been a thing. We just kind of go back home
and maybe have leftovers that night ecastically, So it's very straightforward,
but it's also very calming and fun. It's not a
hectic type of Thanksgiving like I know a lot of
people do.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Oh no, you know, I'm with you on that. I'm
me and Walker are both headed up to the mountains tomorrow.
My brother is doing the rot We're kind of starting
the rotation of hosting Thanksgiving. My brother's hosting at his house,
so we're headed up late tonight. I'm gonna do the
night trip tonight so that we can get up and
get the food ready in the morning. Place is gonna
be littered with kids and dogs and loud and messy
and just you know the way Thanksgiving is, in many
(15:21):
ways meant to be. So that's what we're up to
this weekend. I hope everybody has a great one. Be
safe out there traveling the roads. I noticed yesterday on
my way into work. I bet you it seemed like
yesterday was the big travel day for a lot of people.
Traffic yesterday was a nightmare. I'm sure it's gonna be
a little bit rough today too, or has been and
probably will continue to be. I'm looking out at the
intersection of Minton Moorhead right now in Uptown. It's just
(15:45):
as busy as ever for the most part at about
this time of day, so people are out and about.
The weather's awesome and it's about to get chilly. So
if you can stop by, make your donation. If you can't,
send a monetary donation by texting Street Turkeys all one
word to five zero one five five.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Check this out, Man Panthers. PSL.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Sucker just said, KB, I just gave five hundred dollars
to your wonderful cause. Thank you for brightening the days
of this long suffering Panthers fans with the show. Two
things my Wolverines will let's see will beat Ohio State
this weekend, and going to the Hornets game tonight to
root for the Knicks. Okay, not everything could be perfect,
says what can I say? You take the boy out
(16:26):
of New Yawk, but you can't take the new Yawk
out of the That's how he spelled it, by the way,
I'm not making that up. Says you can't take the
New Yawk out of the boy. I bet you I
just butchered that. You know what, it doesn't matter. Go
root for the Knicks.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
I don't care.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
You gave us five hundred bucks for street Turkeys tonight,
so I will take that incredibly generous donation and say
thank you, and you can wear your knickerbocker's gear to
the Hornets game.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
And I will not say a word.
Speaker 6 (16:46):
By the way, I can concurge that's exactly how he
spelled New York, New York.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
No, exactly, that's how he spelled it.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
So again, we got a lot to get look of
this Rob Longo, the Hornets Radio Network walking up with
a donation right now. Oh, we got kb's right topswee.
That's my wife knows, that's my girlfriend. She knows, she
knows that's my girlfriend. Cat's looking at me like you're
an idiot. You're gonna get in trouble, all right, So
we got a lot to get to. We'll talk some
sports on the other side. But it's the twenty third
annual wfn Z Street Turkeys presented by Ram Pavement. Let's
(17:16):
make a difference Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z.
It's the twenty third annual wfn Z Street Turkeys presented
by Ram Pavement and it's a good time, man, It's
(17:37):
a great day. It's our signature giving event of the year.
We look forward to this every year and we have
for twenty three years. Shout out to the originator, the
og Mark Packer and crew who back in the day
launched this event, and we've been able to carry it
on for nearly a quarter century.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
At this point.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
It's a pretty special thing because there are a lot
of giving campaigns and philanthropic organizations. Not all of them,
not even most of them, could lay claim to sticking
around for nearly a quarter century. But Street Turkeys has
had lasting stay power or staying power, and that's because
of you, the wfn Z listener. So we are trying
to get to forty thousand dollars. We are taking your
frozen turkeys, your canned goods, your box goods on site donation.
(18:15):
I got to check on the Hornets tickets. I don't
know if we're I think we still have some Hornets
tickets to give away. I gotta get the particulars on
that because I don't want to make sure. I don't
want to make a mistake on the air. And say
I'm giving something away the wrong way. But I think
we have Horneeds tickets to give away for those who
are stopping by to make donations to this weekend's game.
So we got a lot going on here. Your chance
to give, and we'll give back as much as we can. Also,
(18:37):
I want to address this really quickly. A couple of
people have texted in to say, hey, KB, just to
be sure, I'm getting a receipt back that says it's
the fourteenth annual WFNZ Street Turkeys. I thought you said
this was the twenty third. You are at the right place.
We knew that already, but we just double checked with
our folks back there. I think it's a little bit
of a glitch, or maybe just somebody forgot to upload
(18:58):
the different graphic this year.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Maybe it reverted back to an old one when they
change systems. I'm not quite sure how that works. But
you are in the right place if you are getting
something that says street Turkeys, even if it says the
fourteenth annual. So if you can make a monetary donation,
it's simple tech Street Turkeys all one word, no spaces.
Street Turkeys to five zero one, five five. We are
(19:20):
working toward forty thousand dollars. I need three thousand people
to make me a five dollars donation. I need fifteen
hundred people to make a ten dollars donation.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
And we hit our goal. We can be there.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
PSL Sucker just made a five hundred dollars donation, all right.
And speaking of big donations, we got to talk to
a friend of the show, friend of the station who
always makes a big donation this time of year. Mike Yates,
the North Carolina state sales director of Republic National, a
distributing company for Jack Daniels. We got Mike Yates back
in the house. What's going on, man?
Speaker 3 (19:49):
You look good.
Speaker 7 (19:49):
Coyle's good to see my friend. Yeah, you too, trimmed
it down, dropped a bunch away, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
Man.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
It's that time of year, right.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Well, what I really was I started back in May
to prepare my body for all the e I'm going
to do tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
That's all right, before we fatten up for the holly,
exactly right.
Speaker 7 (20:03):
That's my motto too.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
Yeah, So what's going on with you? How are they?
Speaker 7 (20:06):
Man? Life is good, you know, it's the business wise
it's it's been a little soft this year. We're doing
better than most, as I would say to some North
Carolina is outperforming most of the country. And we're sort
of the shortest of the tallest short person in the room.
But we're doing all right and holding our own. And
you know our partners here at Jack Daniels right there, Yeah,
(20:26):
they always join in myself with Republic National Distributed and
one of my top suppliers, with Brown forming the parent
company of Jack Daniels. You know, this is just a
special day for us. Always has been street turkeys. I've
been involved now with a doghouse for over twenty years,
since the first liquor license was ever assigned here. I
(20:47):
was like, I gotta get involved, and Jack's been in
the building ever since, and as long as I'm around,
it'll stay that way in some capacity or another. And
this is just a signature of ven It's near and
dear to my heart. You know, with all the years
and times and changes with the radio stations and the
different groups and different people like yourself, you've been my
(21:09):
favorite to come on with. Oh on with Packer before,
you know, way back in the beginning, Packer just wanted
some bottles, right.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
Just kidding pack It's funny, but no, it's It's.
Speaker 7 (21:22):
Always great to come down and be a part of this.
In my company and Brown forming the parent company of
Jack Daniels, we really feel it's an integral part for
us to give back. And today I am here to
announce that we're going to make a five thousand dollars
donation right to a second Armors Bank and Nourishop for
this twenty third annual.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
Twenty third man, how crazy is that?
Speaker 2 (21:46):
This is my ninth I was adding them up the
other day and I'm just shy of fifty berth. You know,
obviously that doesn't really matter, but just thinking nine years,
you know, and when I started this thing was at
fourteen years and we're at twenty three now, and you
guys have been here for all of it, and you
make such a massive impact every single year.
Speaker 7 (22:03):
I remember my first year I came down. There was
a crowd trocket. I'm gonna show my age right now, right,
there's a crowd rocket. I've been down here on the
Harley Davison a few times and then a transition to
the golf cart. And today I'm blessed to have my
wife for her first time down here with me, So
of course we had to bring the truck.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
There you go, So you want to ride in the
sidecar's sidecar?
Speaker 7 (22:23):
Okay, Well, but I always do bring gifts and tickle
to dad to announce you know, we've just launched our
newest Jack Daniels Tennessee BlackBerry whiskey. It is absolutely phenomenal.
It is flying off the shelves. So I've brought you.
Guys always bring you something to wash the turkey down with.
So today we're bringing you our brand new hottest flavor
(22:44):
out to start. Tennessee BlackBerry.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
You hook us up every year.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
I can keep a buzz until I see Mike Yates
the next year Thanksgiving. You hook us up so much.
Now that's incorrect. So Tennessee BlackBerry.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
Huh, what like? What's behind that? Where'd that come from?
Speaker 7 (22:56):
Hey, let's not kid this monkey. See monkey do in
the business a little bit. Yeah, we know there's a
big monster from Canada that came down with a BlackBerry
and just sort of took over the market. Nobody really
ever thought about it. I just think we made it
a little better.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Yeah, that's pretty awesome, And.
Speaker 7 (23:11):
We launching right here in BlackBerry season. The response has
been incredible in the market and the bar and restaurants
scene and the stores and the proofs in the putting.
The taste is there and it's an incredible product. The
team did a fantastic job.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
Mike Yates, Republic National Distributing Company. Jack Daniels.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
This is the WFNZ Doghouse powered by Jack Daniels.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
After all. So I hear something about carrols and barrels
coming up on something.
Speaker 7 (23:36):
It's going on a special display out back at the
at the Jack Daniels Doghouse. And it's the first time
we've ever done this. Jack Daniels started this program several
years ago. Where they started it was Carrols by the barrels. Right,
We're always known for our barrels, right. And Jack Dowels
you see him at Home Depot and Low's. You make
planners out of them and everything else. What they have
(23:57):
been doing around the country was they come in and
they'll stack all these barrels up in the shape of
a Christmas tree, light them up, and they do a
signature event carrols around the barrels. So we're gonna be
proud to do that for the first time. Ever in
North Carolina this Sunday after the Chargers game Rams game.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
All right, probably I wish it was the Chargers, don't
get me wrong. Probably another l I wish it was
the Chargers. It'll be Uh, we're gonna do carrols by
the barrels.
Speaker 7 (24:32):
They're right out back here at the Jack Daniels Doghouse
five to seven after the game. So we'd love to
have everybody come out check it out. And after the
season's over, and we're gonna auction these barrels off for charity. Really,
that's how it works. The barrels stay in the market,
we aution them off to charity. These are all polished,
finished branded barrels. Is beautiful and uh, they'll look great
(24:55):
in somebody's house here around the hollow.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
See, I wish I'm glad you said that, but I
kind of wish you hadn't because I told my wife
a while back. I said, you know, we've got this
great new outdoor space at my house at my place now,
and I.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
Said, you know what would be cool?
Speaker 2 (25:07):
And she said, oh god, And I said you know
what if I cause I need like a work bench,
a work table, but a longer one. I said, what
if you got a bunch of whiskey barrels and lined
them up and ran a tabletop across them, right, And
she was like, oh God, here we go. And so
here I am talking to Mike Yates and he's talking
about having extra whiskey barrel So you and you and
I might have.
Speaker 3 (25:22):
To well a couple of barrels.
Speaker 7 (25:24):
You just come save me with my warehouse is up
off Sunset, right, We'll figure something.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Out for you.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
Kyle, listen, brother, thank you for everything you do for us.
Every I can't say enough you guys, the impact that
a five thousand dollars donation makes. I know you know
this and we all know this, and we thank you
every year for it. But I just want people to
appreciate what you're doing for the community.
Speaker 7 (25:42):
I think it's our companies in the business that we're in.
In this industry, it's critical that we always give back.
I know my teams have been around the state for
the past month trying to raise funds, raise food for
different charities around the state based in their markets. We'll
do the same thing for Christmas with Boys for Tots
and different things. But this is a key piece we
(26:04):
got to get back.
Speaker 3 (26:05):
Man yep, yep, Happy Thanksgiving brother, Thank you very much.
Mike Yates.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
Hang it out with us, the sales director Republic National
Distributing Company, Jack Daniels, our title sponsor here at the
wfn Z Doghouse. That's why you hear us say it
every time. The WFNZ Doghouse powered by Jack Daniels. And
that's because of Mike Yates and his crew and the
job that they do. Now again we get back to
the business of talking sports. But one more time, and
it's not the last time. Text Street Turkeys to five
(26:31):
zero one five five to make a monetary donation if
you can. We'll certainly like listen, if you want to
get in the car and go to the store and
you know, buy a frozen turkey, pick up some canned food,
some boxed food, and bring it down here. Man, we'd
love to see you. We'll even hook you up with
with Hornets tickets if we can for the weekend. I
believe we still have the ability to do that. Miss
Katrina Wiles is nodding her head and telling me that
(26:52):
we can. So if you bring your food down here,
we'll hook you up with some Charlotte Hornets tickets, not
tonight's game. Not for the Knicks game tonight, but rather
the Saturday game I believe against the Raptors coming up
this weekend. Six o'clock tip. So if you bring your
food down here, just tell us you're here with food.
Ask us about the Hornets tickets. We'll hook you up
with Hornets tickets to see the Hornets and Raptors on
Saturday at the Spectrum Center.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Let's pack that place out.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
But if not, Tech Street Turkey's all one word to
five zero one five five to make that monetary donation
five dollars, ten dollars, fifteen to twenty minut it goes
a long way. Doesn't have to be five thousand like
Jack Daniels, or like the Hornets, doesn't have to be
a five hundred dollars donation like Panthers PSL sucker. Literally,
a ten dollars donation is gonna pay for a lot
(27:36):
of food this holiday season and beyond. So hit us
up seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten. If
you have any questions, you can hit us there on
the fan duel text line again. Al Wallace coming up
in about eleven minutes.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
Smoke. I was thinking about this.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
I was texting with Al earlier this morning just to
confirm that he was on today, and we talk a
little Panthers this afternoon. He was pretty feisty. Last time
we talked to him, that was following the Saints' loss.
Al was pretty feisty. Any thoughts on what he's gonna
sound like in ten minutes coming off that loss to
San Francisco on Monday.
Speaker 6 (28:05):
I think he'll be frustrated, but I don't think he'll
be as feisty. I think it'll be more maybe towards
the offense and Dave Canalis, but defensively that was not
the problem. I mean, the run game wasn't really the
problem in the loss on Monday, because they averaged a
very good and efficient stat line. It's just probably he's
gonna be more mad at Dave Canalis more than anyone
I bet.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
I yeah, yeah, I mean that makes sense to me.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
I think a lot of people, the folks who are
all red like, who've decided that Bryce can't be the guy.
I don't think they're moved in any way on the
Bryce front by what happened on Monday. And the thing
about Dave is, I don't know about you, Like it's
almost like a little bit on tilt for me, because
it wasn't that long ago that people got really fired
up when Luke Keigley said, Man, this guy's a good
(28:51):
play caller. Man, this guy's got me on my heels.
On the radio broadcast, Luke said, man, Dave's doing a
great job. Jake came on here and told that story.
And then you get a game like Monday against the
forty nine ers where nothing makes sense.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
Right.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
It's not just that you abandoned the run and and
you know, only gave nine carries to the running backs.
It's that you abandoned the run for a passing game.
That and credit to Colin Hoggard because he used this phrase,
I think yesterday on his show, and it's the best
way to describe it, compressed passing game, Like you opted
not to run the football on the road in primetime
(29:25):
against a team that had been giving up one hundred
and eleven yards on the ground per home game this
year at home, and you didn't even do that to
air it out and you know, chuck the ball down
field to give receivers and Bryce no doubt had some
level of involvement in that two smoke, but That's the
most confounding thing about it is that nothing about the
play calling, nothing about the game plan seemed to make
(29:46):
any sense whatsoever.
Speaker 6 (29:48):
Yeah, and it just you also could never get into
a good rhythm with how much San Francisco was controlling
the ball. But that still doesn't really explain some of
the play calling decisions you made and how you weren't
really trying to go over to vertical field. Now, I
think probably sane frame part of that was they were
making sure that you weren't gonna get the vertical passing
game for the middle of the field after what they
saw happen against Atlanta. But still to the point where
(30:11):
it just felt like it was just it was uneven.
It was just all over the place and uneven and
never the calls were not called at the right time,
it felt like, especially in that first half. And it
didn't help too that the offense shot themselves in the
foot when the defense got the stops that they needed
to or the turnovers that they needed to.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
That's the thing, like, I'm not really inclined to just
bury Dave Canalis and go after him necessarily. I just
I have so many questions, like what are we missing
what could have gone differently, What should have happened in
your mind that would have changed the perception of the
way you called that game, right, The third down drop
by Tetero McMillan, the really bad one, the first one
with the black clofs, the black cloves drop, like, who knows,
(30:54):
maybe maybe that's a drive where they start to pick
up momentum and figure things out. Right, the excel that
would have gone for I believe fourteen yards that might
have made a difference. You know, there were we talked
about it yesterday to if you believe the officials, the
forty nine ers do no wrong, right, they didn't there,
they didn't hold in that game. They didn't do anything
(31:14):
wrong right. There were almost no flags on San Francisco.
There were a couple of things that might have helped
Carolina out there. And we can do this with most
football games, okay, most, not all. We can do this
with most football games, but in this one in particular,
it's just like, man, you I went back and rewatched
the second half last night, and I just couldn't figure
out what they were trying to do. And the truth
is they couldn't either. They couldn't get into a rhythm.
(31:35):
There was no continuity, and I don't know that that's
going to change on Sunday against the I hope it does.
I did an interview with our boys, Smoke Andrew Philipponi
for the fan Dual Sports Network Sunday morning pregame coverage
this coming weekend for the NFL.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
Wow, you're you're such a time child or you did
it on a Wednesday Stefday.
Speaker 3 (31:55):
Well, you know it's holiday weekends.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
Everybody's getting prepped and recording stuff ahead of time, so
you know, I set down for a conversation with Philiponi
that's gonna air on the FanDuel Network coming up on Sunday,
and he was asking me my thoughts on this game,
and you know what I thought was going to happen.
And I said, you know, I think the offense will
play better. I think they can't play a whole lot worse.
And I do think they're going to be sharper and respond,
(32:18):
But I don't know what respond means on Like, I
still think they lose the game, probably like thirty four
to twenty one or something.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
Like that kind of sounds about right, yet, you know.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
What I mean, Like I think maybe maybe maybe they
come out. Just you know, the offense is going to
have to keep pacing this game, especially now with merrigout
JC and concussion protocol, Corey Thornton with a broken leg.
You know, I'm hearing good things about Trevin Wallace making
his return on Sunday, so that could be huge. Maybe
you get your starting linebackers back, in which case, like
if you're largely healthy upfront, you know, you might be
(32:48):
able to put up a fight a little bit. I'm
gonna stress the little bit part, but like I could
see the offense keeping this thing close going into the
fourth quarter, but I foresee the Rams, you know, a
couple of fourth quarter touchdowns pulling away thirty four to
twenty thirty four to twenty one in that scenario. I mean,
that's kind of what you're thinking based on what I'm hearing.
Speaker 6 (33:06):
Yeah, and the fact that you will likely not have
JC when they have two they had Let's let's face it,
they have two number one receivers on at the same time.
Speaker 3 (33:15):
Yeah, that's gonna be pretty hard to do.
Speaker 6 (33:16):
I think Mike Jack Mike Jack started a year hot
and then he was pretty ice cold for like four
or five weeks. I feel like the last two to
three weeks has been returned to what we saw early
in the year from Mike Jack. I think Mike Jack
can hold off one of the guys.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
It's just.
Speaker 6 (33:31):
I don't think you can hold off both the guys
when you don't have JC out there.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
No, that offense from La is so creative. Matt Stafford
knows exactly what he's doing. He's throwing in rhythm. The
arm strength looks back, I mean, and then he get
a pretty good run game with Williams part of movie Williams.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
By the way, I just want to point out that
was another one I was right on from South Bend.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
Okay, fair enough, fair enough, all right, we got to
hit a break. We got Al Wallace coming up in
about five minutes. We go to smoke on the headlines.
Speaker 3 (33:56):
Who is smoked? Where is smoke? Where there's there's fire.
Let's go what you got? All right?
Speaker 6 (34:04):
So, as you said, do you want to mention with
all the bad news about J. C. Horden, Claude and
Cherrill is probably not getting off the concussion protocol in.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
A short week, there is some good news.
Speaker 6 (34:12):
Dave Canals told the media he expects Trevin Wallace will
be back playing good this week. Yeah, so Trevin Wallace
is going to be back. It looks like in some
other news Chris Barnes has been activated to the active rosters,
so that will probably be who he's playing alongside. Still
a little bit up in the air about Christian rose Boom,
but that honestly kind of makes a little sense if
(34:33):
you remember Trevin Wallace got hurt before rose Boom. So
it sounds like the linebacking court this weekend will be
Trevin Wallace and Chris Barnes.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
All right, there you go, We'll come back. We'll talk
panthers with former panther Al Wallace. It's the wfn Z
twenty third Annual Street Turkeys. Let's make a difference. Sports
Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z live from the
(35:13):
WF and Z Doghouse, powered by Jack Daniels. It's the
twenty third annual Street Turkeys, taking your frozen turkey donations,
your canned goods, box goods here at the WF and
Z Doghouse. Even giving away Hornets tickets to those who
stop by and make a donation. Tickets to Hornets and
Raptors on Saturday. If you stop buy and make a donation.
If you can't, text Street Turkeys all one word Street
(35:35):
Turkeys to the number five zero one, five to five.
When you do, you should get a response with a
link to a secure donation page. You can make your
donation there, and do not be alarmed if it says
the fourteenth annual. I think that might just be a
glitch in the system. But you are on the right place,
on the right site if you do that, So make
sure to text Street Turkeys to five zero one, five
to five. We'll get you an updated donation number coming
(35:57):
up here in just a bit. But right now we
talk Panthers with a former Panther. Former Carolina defensive end
Al Wallace is back with us. You can catch him
on the postgame pregame postgame Queen citynewspanthers dot com. He's
all over the place and he's our press box buddy
here at WFNZ AL.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
Happy Thanksgiving brother, what's going on?
Speaker 5 (36:15):
Yeah? Happy Thanksgiving man. Everything's good down in South Florida.
Family and getting ready to eat way too much.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
Kyle, I hear that.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
Are you a traditional turkey and ham family? How do
you get down from a food standpoint?
Speaker 5 (36:27):
Yeah, I'm all the proteins. Right, they'll beat some turkey,
they'll beat some ham. It's South Florida, so we'll have
some ribs, smoke. There'll be a bunch of different options
here for the Wallace family. So always excited about Thank you.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
All right, that's awesome, all right, Well that's awesome. Monday
night football was not We got to talk about that.
Don't want to ruin your appetite, but we'll talk about
it anyway. To me, there's a lot we can say
about it. I just felt like this team, the coaches included,
just didn't look ready for prime time for a lot
of reasons. What were your big takeaways from that loss
in San Francisco?
Speaker 5 (37:00):
Yeah, man, I think you neiled it. It just looked
like a team that wasn't prepared, maybe a little bit
jet lag. Nothing seemed to connect Tederroa McMillan, Bryce Young
that connection, and not only the drop balls, but just
miscommunication on routes. Things we haven't seen. And you hate
to talk about the proverbial rookie wall with the guy
(37:20):
like that, but this team in general just looks like
looked like they were prepared for the big lights, right,
the big stage with all of football watching on a
Monday night, to build off what we saw just a
week ago from Bryce Young Dave Canalis in this offense
against a former foe, right, a guy they knew. Seven
of the first eleven you know snaps for the San
(37:42):
Francisco forty nine ers went to Christian McCaffrey. Just all
out of sorts. That would be the biggest takeaway. Just
very frustrating as a fan to watch.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
No doubt about it. What did you I mean? Dave
Canalis has taken a lot of heat. Bryce Young always does.
He's the quarterback. He pretty much always will until unless
he wins a playoff game. I'm sure, But I mean
Dave Canallis is taken a lot of heat around here
since Monday because of that game plan. Nine carries for
the running backs combined, and so he abandons the run
game but doesn't exactly push the ball downfield in the
(38:10):
passing game.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
What did you think of his game plan, the way
that he called plays?
Speaker 5 (38:14):
Yeah, I just I wish I understood who and what
this offense is supposed to look like under Dave Canalis.
We were told in that first press conference that it
was going to be a run heavy offense. We've seen
college glimpses of that throughout his stint here with the Panthers,
But when it boils down to it, he's not stubborn enough.
He's not a dog enough about his game plan. If
(38:35):
you're going to run the ball, then run the damn ball,
and don't let somebody push you off of that spot
so easily. It's like, if it doesn't work, if you
feel threatened by a heavy box, then I'm out. I'm
going to start trying to use extended runs, right, I'm
going to start doing the smoke screens, the checkdowns as
part of part of my running game to get it
to my backs to the Hubbard and ric o'dowdle. So
(38:57):
he's just, I mean, he's a half glass full time
a guy. And you can see that all over the
play calling that he's just he's gonna back off, and
he's gonna pivot and he's gonna do something else. And
I just wish he was more stubborn about the idea
that I'm gonna run the ball and been defensive to
my will and not the other way around. You gotta
make adjustment, that's what the NFL is. But he just
(39:18):
moves off that spot too quickly for me.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Are you at all concerned about the health of the
offensive line right now? They've started nine different combinations of
Ola got hurt the other night, Kate May's already hurt.
Like they brought back all of the starters and all
of the depth from last year's team out and here
we are going into week thirteen and it feels like
that offensive line is just beating the hell up.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
Yeah they are, they've been beaten up. But would I do?
And when I can't say about the offensive line, it works.
They're not the problem. And I know guys gonna get beat.
You're gonna get watch Ikey get you know, beat on
the edge once and Devala's struggle. Corbett has missed some guys,
even Taylor Moten we've seen on his backside way more
often than we've seen in a number of years since
(39:58):
he's been a Carolina Panther. But that line is not
the issue. Go back two years, three years where you
just you couldn't watch them play, that's not the issue.
They've opened up big holes. I think they've provided time
for Bryce Young. This scheme is a lot of get
out of the pocket, you know, boots and waggles for
Bryce Young. So, yeah, you worry about the offensive line,
(40:20):
You're concerned about the depth, But I think they've held
up in spite of it. I believe because that system
is in place, they know exactly what to do. Just
go look at Rico Doddle's number. It was the same
offensive line. These guys have been opening up holes without
Robert Hunt all season. So I don't know that they're
the reason why these seem out of sorts on that
side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
Oh no, I agree, They're not the reason. I just
worry about their health. At this stage of the season,
feels like everybody's dropping like flies. And listen, you've talked
about this. You played for this team, you played in
the NFL, but you were a Panther in particular, so
you've gone from player to analysts. But you also talk
pretty plainly about being a fan too. You know, you
live and die on Sundays like the rest of us,
and you know there's been a lot of that. And
I think because of how roller Coastery this season has been,
(41:02):
the wild pendulum swings week to week, it's driven a
lot of people to pull their hair out. I came
in yesterday and said last night sucked. They weren't ready
for prime time. That doesn't feel good. But I'm still
looking at you know, the schedule, two against two or
three against Tampa in the season. I'm looking at Baker
Mayfield's shoulder injury. I'm looking at the Panthers coming out
(41:23):
of the by against the Saints. And I'm still looking
at this sal thinking, man, i think Carolina is going
to be seven and seven with three to go before
those two games against Tampa.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
What do you think about that?
Speaker 5 (41:32):
I'd love it. I'd signed up for that were the
preseason games. If you told me seven and seven, three
games to go with two opportunities at Tampa Bay, I
for one, hope Baker goes on plays. He keeps playing,
keeps getting hit, keeps getting knocked down from that shoulder
to give us the best opportunity. Right, So I like
(41:53):
where you are. I think part of being a fan,
and I know guys talk about it all the time,
sitting a couple seet down for me up in that prepot, man,
it's emotional, and I think to be a good fan,
you have to feel all the ups and downs, the
peaks in the valleys, and this year's certainly been a
test of everyone's fandom. But if you're in a position
no matter what. I was just with Mictber and he
(42:14):
was talking about being three seven and one, I forget
what year it was, and then coming back and still
fighting a way to make the playoffs and winning the
NFC style. So it doesn't matter how up and down
of a roller coaster it is. I like where the
Panthers are. I think they can make a strong push
to the end. The injuries JC being out, you know,
(42:35):
melting with the broken leg and things like that starting
to pile up now concern me about that final push.
But if you have the top two teams, two of
the three, two of the last three games of the
season with the division on the line, man, it makes
my blood boil, It makes my juices flow. And if
you're a competitor and you're on that Panthers roster, you
gotta be looking forward to that because that's what it's
(42:55):
all about. You won't remember anything that happened at the
beginning in the middle of this season if you can
get to that point and be right there to win
the division.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
Yeah, well said that twenty fourteen season with Mike Tolbert,
that was that's one that everybody's been pointing to, I
think the last couple of days.
Speaker 3 (43:09):
It's a great point.
Speaker 2 (43:10):
Al Wallace hanging out with us here on Street Turkey's
Day Live from the WFNZ Doghouse, powered by Jack Daniels.
I'm gonna be here Sunday morning doing pregame, then going
across the street to the game.
Speaker 3 (43:21):
The Rams.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
I think we all thought would be a good team
when the season began. By the time I don't know
about four three four weeks rolled around, I thought, Wow,
that's the best team in football, and they're playing like it.
And Matt Stafford has been unbelievable the last eight games.
And so you got that team, red hot, fresh off
of beating of Tampa, coming in here on Sunday, and
to your point a moment ago, you got J. C.
Horn and Claude and Cheryl list in the concussion protocol,
(43:44):
Corey Thornton with a broken leg. You know, the good
news is a guy like Trevin Wallace is expected to
play on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (43:49):
So that's great.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
I don't know, I mean, this is one that nobody's
going to expect Carolina to compete in, I think much
less win.
Speaker 3 (43:55):
But what are your thoughts on this game.
Speaker 5 (43:57):
Yeah, this one's scary, but so is Green Bay and
throw are a lot of other games on this schedule.
The difference is you went into those with all of
your guys right now, missing a guy if JC is
not able to get out there and play, and then
the suspension for a guy that just does so many things,
so versatile position, versatility of tackling machine on the back
(44:19):
end and Merrick that's gonna hurt. And I think you
can't afford to not have all eleven guys that can
compete at the highest level on that defense. I mean,
my goodness, they have two or three number one receivers
and capable running back to Matthew Stafford could be, should
be maybe the MVP of the league. So that offense
(44:40):
works to perfection, and down a couple of the horses
on that defensive side is a scary proposition. But then
you think about Jared Burst, you think about Young and
the guys on that defense as well, and the problems
they're going to present for Bryce Young. I think this
is a tough spot for the Panthers. Just what you
talked about, the injuries on the offensive line and now
on the defense, with the way they played, puts a
(45:01):
lot of pressure on the back end, especially Mike jack Man.
He's gonna be under fire all night if Jac's not
able to go out there and play his Sunday it.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
Just as an extension of that.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
Is there any world in what you think is hero
Leverro's familiarity with the Rams and Sean McVay could be
of a benefit to them this weekend, just knowing what
it is they do so well.
Speaker 5 (45:20):
Yeah, absolutely, So. What I do know is he's gonna
get his guys in the best position, and I believe
that over the course of his time here as a
defensive coordinator. Now those guys got to execute, and can
the guys that are gonna have to be called into action,
called into duty? You know, cherlest was in there, boom,
he's out. Are you gonna get Trevin Wallace back? And
how long you know I've had an ac joint or
(45:42):
a bad shoulder or labor room. That thing just bothers you.
It's pain tolerance. How long he's he gonna be last?
Is he gonna last? Even if he plays? It's scary.
We've seen him go in and out of the lineup.
So I think coach. Hej is gonna do his best.
He's very familiar with the offense. He'll have some things
up his sleeves. The counter well, you know, McVeigh is
gonna do. But at the end of it, are the
(46:04):
players right, all the guys out there capable of executing it?
And that'll be the storyline we'll talk about come Monday morning.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
Happy Thanksgiving brother, Enjoy it in South Florida, and we'll
see again in a couple of days.
Speaker 5 (46:16):
All right, man, appreciate you guys.
Speaker 3 (46:17):
Thanks big Al.
Speaker 2 (46:18):
