Speaker 2 (00:15):
And good afternoon Queen City Sports Radio ninety two seven
WFNZ KB and smoke back with you on a Wednesday.
And we have been adventuring together today, hanging out outside
(00:38):
the office. We went to Panthers practice the training camp today,
joint practice against the Cleveland Browns, and I got to
tell you right off the jump, Carolina looked good. Now
I say that more in the perspective of having watched
the offense closely.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Today.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
We didn't get a great view of Carolina's defense, so
I want to put that out there right away. Nor
did we get much of a take from Dave Canalis
in the the post practice press conference today about the defense,
because I don't know that he looked over there more
than five times the entire two hour practice as he
was focused on the offense. He clearly gave the keys
to his ziro everro today defensively, which he typically does,
(01:15):
and they were on the defense, that is, on the
other end of the field, battling the likes of Shador
Sanders and Joe Flacco. We'll talk about that coming up
very shortly, but a lot to get to. The rain
held off this morning. They got a clean practice in
even though you know, Smoke and I both showed up
in rain gear today and know I did not bring
(01:35):
the umbrella. I've had multiple listeners tweet and DM me
on Instagram today asking if I actually went through with
it and carried an umbrella for the first time in
my life to practice.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I did not.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
I couldn't bring myself to do it. I just went
with the raincoat today. And Smoke will attest to this.
The raincoat lasted maybe five minutes into practice and I
just couldn't take it anymore and I had to take
the damn thing off. But fortunately the rain and subsided
and we got to watch a dry football practice today. Smoke,
that was your first glimpse at the twenty twenty five
Carolina Panthers today.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
What'd you think? Nothing that makes me go, oh my god,
here we go. Let's get the parade route ready. But
it's like, okay, they held their own. Nothing that really
made me go ooh, that's very concerning. Oh yeah, I
think they overall had a better practice. But I also
think that this Carolina team is going to be and
it's supposed to be better than Cleveland this year. Specifically
(02:29):
everywhere outside of the defensive line, I just it looked like, Yeah,
they did a good job from what I saw from
their defense offense. For Cleveland's offense and Carolina's defense, they
were doing a good job of stuffing to run, which
was a pleasant surprise to see. Even if we already
expect them to be better, it's like, oh, they're actually
(02:49):
stopping to run and stuff like that. The only standouts
I saw for Cleveland on offense, and again we didn't
get to see that much because they were far away
from us, was Jerry Judy.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Judy Judy Judy. Yeah, Judy Judy Judy.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
He was looking like a crisp wide receiver who's finally
found his gear in consistency. He made one of the
most nonchalant one handed catches I've seen in a while
in seven on seven drills. I'm like, geez, he's going
to be a stud, and there for a while he
was that for them last year. The only question is
who in the world is going to be your quarterback?
(03:25):
Because I don't think they know. But I will say,
for as much as people were wanting Shdura Sanders, I
don't think that's gonna happen. Just based on the quarterbacks
I saw for Cleveland, the guys that looked the best
today were Flacco and Kenny Pickett.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
By the way, Zach Jackson, who covers Cleveland football Cleveland
Browns football for the Athletic, he's going to join us.
Coming up in forty minutes, we'll talk to Zach. I
spent smoke and I spent a good portion of the
morning standing with Zach. Next to Zach on the sidelines,
we kind of split the field because there are two
really four practice fields, but like two big ones, and
so we sort of split the differents, the three of
(04:00):
us standing in the middle. Of course, Zach was watching
Cleveland more intently. We were watching Carolina's offense a bit
more intently. So we'll get Zach stalks coming up in
forty minutes about you know, what he saw from the
Cleveland perspective. But you know, I watched a couple of
Shador Sanders reps this morning. I didn't see anything particularly
(04:20):
interesting that he did. I also, again, we had kind
of a tough view of things, tried to focus when
he was out there. I will say that what stands
out is Joe Flacco is a lot bigger than all
of them. Like, Joe Flacco is a big man. And
I've been around Joe Flacco once or twice, but you know,
just seeing him next to the rest of those those
quarterbacks this morning, you were reminded that is a very
(04:42):
large person in Joe Flacco. The ball even comes off
his hand differently than the rest of them. Now, he's
not their future. He turns the ball over a lot,
you know, and so on and so forth. But that
stood out to me. But nothing really from Schador Sanders
that I saw this morning really stood out. I saw
a couple of checkdowns, there was a pass breakup that
got the Panthers defense pretty hyped over there, but not
(05:02):
much else, you know, really stood out. TFB is on
the FanDuel text line saying, I wish we heard more
coverage on defense from some of our reporters. I saw
some of our best saying that our run defense looked good.
But I saw Cleveland's beat reporters saying their wide receivers
were having their way with our secondary again. It's it's
hard to say, right because the way that it was
(05:24):
set up, all the media was standing in the same place.
We were all on one end of the field, so
we all had a better view of the Panthers offense
versus the Cleveland defense than we had of the Browns
offense versus the Panthers defense. I saw, you know, Cleveland
make some plays offensively, but nothing that was like WHOA,
(05:44):
what a big play, what a special play? Nothing like that,
So you know, you're right. I saw some of the
run defense they were talking about. Carolina's run defense did
stand out on a couple of occasions, to be sure.
But I think the big story that's being taken away
from practice today from those were they're covering it is
that Carolina's offense looked the part. They were a little
(06:05):
bit shaky in the beginning of the seven on seven stuff,
and even that wasn't Bryce Young For the most part.
Andy Dalton didn't have the best day throwing the football
during seven on seven got picked off. Yeah, but Bryce
came out and was accurate pretty much from the jump.
He hit Adam Thielen in tight coverage and then the
very next play, I believe found Jalen Coker in the
back of the end zone for his first touchdown of
(06:26):
the day. That was the first of two touchdowns today
for Jaylen Cocher. So Bryce was accurate. Bryce had a
good day. That's an opinion that I don't think is
really disputable. And I saw the likes of Joe Person
and I believe Mike Kay saying the same thing on Twitter.
But we all saw it. Bryce had a very good
day throwing the football. It was really keeping in line
with you know what we've seen so far in camp
(06:48):
from him. You know, nothing incredible, right there was there
was no off script, you know, being chased by three defenders,
backfoot throw falling out of bounds to the back of
the end zone of that today, but set his feet through,
with timing, with rhythm, was you know, accurate, got the
ball out for the most part quickly. I only saw
(07:09):
one or two occasions where Bryce probably held onto the
football a little bit too long, but you know, otherwise,
everybody watching out there today felt like Bryce Young had
a really good day throwing the football.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Yeah, and when you know he had no one to
throw to and you know, essentially dirted it ahead of
the field. He threw the ball to the ground to
where no one else could catch it. But also, you know,
wasn't really being that reckless with it. He got the
ball out quick enough. I honestly think they would have
gone to the flat a lot more if this was
a real game, because you know, I just don't think
people want to run the flats on seven and sevens
(07:39):
or on scrimmages. But I'll say Xavier le Guett had
a pretty damn good day. And I'll also say this, honestly,
the best wide receiver that seemed to flash the most
today Kyle was Jalen Cocher. Oh, Jalen Cocher had a
lot of really big plays today in practice. And I
think that's big because we haven't heard that much about
Jalen Cocher this training camp. He's been very signed quiet, yep.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
All the talk's been about TMAC sorry ted Arone McMillan.
All the talk's been about, you know, whether or not
xavierly gets coming along, whether or not Hunter Renfro is back,
and of course him having a strong camp. But there's
been very little about Jalen Coker and what he's done.
And today he came out early and was making plays
from the beginning. As a matter of fact, give me,
give me twenty four Smoke. Dave Canalis said after practice,
(08:21):
I forget who asked him about Jalen Cocher, but he said, listen,
Jalen took the five weeks that they were off leading
up to the start of training camp to really work
on himself physically, and he said, Jalen came back a
different athlete to training camp, which really is it's the
first time I think we're hearing that about Jalen Coker
from Dave Canalis in training camp thus far.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
But it was on display out there today. It really was.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
So you know, if you are looking for reasons to
believe that this wide receiver corps is as deep as
it appeared to be at the start of camp, today
was another reason to believe that based on the performance
of Jalen Cocher, but really quick. Dave Canalis met with
the media after practice today. Smoke and I were there.
From that he gave us a thirty thousand foot overview
(09:06):
of what he saw from the offense in this practice today.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
The first couple of drills, I think the first team period,
I was I was excited about the execution. I was
excited about the physicality of it. You know, some of
our play actions we were able to hold up, which
can get a little funky, you know, with different fronts.
It's a different defense, you know than what we've been
playing all camp. So that's a challenge. But I loved
the run game, loved how we moved it, you know.
(09:32):
And then the second team period it got sloppy. You know,
we weren't throwing flags we had we had I think
three delay of games and two fall starts. We can't
have that, you know, we we're gonna put ourselves in
really bad spots, you know, when we're trying, when we're
putting ourselves in first and fifteen, you know, and or
if it's a third and six and we have a
false start, you know, all of a sudden, it's third eleven.
You know, he makes it really hard. You know, that's
(09:53):
now you're in the twenty percent or less, you know,
conversion zone. So I think that's something that just from
what I saw, you know, I was very excited about
the physicality. I was very excited about the execution after
the snap pre snap, these kind of opportunities really shine
light on what you need to work on, and.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
So right there you go.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
He liked what he saw from the offense today, you know,
pointed out some of the stumbles and Dave's very honest
about some of those things, and in my experience so
far in these press conferences, but liked what he saw
from the offense. Now back to Cocher really specifically, because
I didn't realize we had this cut. Here's Dave Canalis
talking about a strong day for Jalen Coker.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
I think Jalen has taken full advantage of the five
weeks that we had off since the spring. You know,
in OTAs he kind of just was ramping up, kind
of getting a plan for his readiness, and he came
back a different athlete. I have to say, you know,
of all the guys, Jalen really did a great job
of just working on his his transition, his speed, his
(10:54):
body comp his readiness for practice and all that. And
I think he's just taking steps. He was a rookie
last year, you know, kind of thrown into the fire,
and this year now he's got a plan. You know,
he's got a routine. We talked to the guys about
the routines, and people ask who are the players that
you've seen have success over time. It's the ones the
young players that have had that have been able to help.
They just kind of watch a veteran player and they
(11:16):
just follow kind of their preparation when they study, when
they take care of their body, how they recover the
legs and all those things. And you know, and Jalen
he shows up like this, you know, and you're playing
against other pros and he's got game experience, you know,
so this isn't too big for Jalen. And he got
out there and made some great plays. And I'm also
excited about his you know, his impact on special teams.
He's done a great job this camp also covering kicks
(11:38):
and also as a blocker.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Yeah, and in case you forgot, even though everyone assumes
that he's part of the receiving corps and is poised
for a big second year, you know, he's still earned
his keep out there on special teams. And I think
they're very appreciative of the work that he's putting in
there as well. If you're just tuning in KB and
Smoke there today for Panthers and Brown's joint practice. Good
(11:59):
day for the Panthers offense. Kind of TBD for the defense.
Even Dave Canalis himself again said I gotta go watch
the tape. I don't know anything that happened over there
on the defensive field. As the Panthers defense was battling
with the Browns offense. Again, we were trying to keep
track a little bit. Zach Jackson of the athletic who
covers the Browns, had his eyes on Cleveland all day.
(12:22):
He's coming up in about thirty minutes to talk about
everything from the Cleveland perspective. But you know, others asking
on the text line, hey what about Tedroro McMillan. One
guy saying, KB, I saw you posting that Tetoroh had
a touchdown grab overall, how did he look? Again? Today
was more of the same, I think from McMillan. There
was certainly good. There were a couple of hiccups, but
(12:43):
a lot of it good. There was, you know, one
play I know, first of all, he caught a touchdown
pass from about ten yards out over the middle on
a slant, well run route in traffic contested ball. I mean,
that's the kind of thing they brought him here to do,
so that was nice to see. There was also a
deep from Bryce Uh that would have been caught for
(13:03):
a touchdown by Teterron McMillan. I guess it's possible he
would have dropped it, but the ball was right there.
But there was a defensive pass interference penalty throne as
the defender was beaten by McMillan and came across with
a slash to keep him from dropping the catching the football,
and the flags came out immediately.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
There was like two of those.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Yeah, yeah, one in particular stands out, but would have
been another touchdown grab for McMillan on a really nicely
thrown ball from Bryce. So I mean, I think though
they're overall really happy with what McMillan has done so
far because I believe, like we talked about yesterday, you know,
their view of him is and he is first on
the depth chart to be clear, that came out yesterday.
The first Panthers' death chart came out and McMillan is
(13:41):
listed as a starter at wide receiver. You know, I
think the coaching staff wants all of us to remember that.
You know, there's some polishing, some refinement there that needs
to take place with McMillan, but overall he is he's
showing some things that they really like out there, and
there was more of it this morning against Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, definitely not a finished product.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
But when you look at the mistakes he makes, it's like, oh,
he's just he's trying to get adjusted. It's nothing like,
oh my gosh, this is going to be a real
problem here for out the season most likely, Like Dave
Canal has talked about it when he was speaking to
the media, how you know, there's one pass in particular.
I think Bryce was behind it, but it was the
only place that he could sneak it into Tetora and
t Mac was, you know, a little late to adjusting,
(14:20):
and it was one of those things where Bryce saw it,
but Tetrorora didn't see it. And I think it's just
one of those things where Bryce is trying to get
used to the rhythm of t Mac and same thing
vice versa. On the utter end too, So when I
look at him dropping the passes, it's not like they're
completely easy passes to catch. And I also look at
it too, thinking, yeah, I think you'll figure it out.
(14:40):
It's not nothing that's like oh no, it's like, Eh,
he's a rookie. That's what I kind of look at
from his mistake so far.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Yeah, no doubt about its seven oh four five seven
ninety six ten. Speaking of McMillan, for those that asked,
here's Dave Canalis on the growing chemistry between Bryce Young
and tedro McMillan.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Oh yeah, it's going great. You know.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
I love the chemistry that they're developing. I think that,
you know, especially down the field. You know, Bryce has
been giving you know, Team AC a lot of opportunities,
a lot of shots down the field to figure out
where can I put this where he's gonna be able
to get his hands on it, you know. And on
the play that he had a touchdown that he dropped
today and he was kind of running a corner route
and Bryce kind of instead of leading him to the
(15:21):
back pylon, Bryce kind of threw it right behind the defender.
And I think that was a new one, you know,
for Team AT because he was like, oh, shoot, this
is a good spot for it. Bryce kind of saw it.
So I was excited about that. Bryce turned around to me,
We're both smiling, and we would love him to catch
that ball. He will, but I love just taking those
attempts down the field just because it's just the mediu factor,
you know, learning, learning new skill players within our scheme.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
All right, there you go. So again there's a lot
of good.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
There's some stuff that needs to be worked on, but
you know, overall, a very good day for the Panthers
offense from what we could see today at practice seven
oh four, five, seven ninety six ten. Hit us up
on the FanDuel text line. It's tough because unlike last
you know, we would come in here after practice and
we would have you know, we would have people telling
us what they saw, like their perspective, sitting in the
(16:07):
end zones because they were there. Y'all can't be there
this year, you won't be there next year. So we're
telling you what we saw. You're just asking us to
be your eyes and ears. We're trying our best out there.
I will say the entire WFNZ staff was represented for
the most part today. I think every on air member
of the staff, with the exception of Hoggard and Strappie
who were on the air, was it practice today. So
we're going to relay everything we see to the best
(16:29):
of our ability over the remainder of training camp, and
again we'll do it all over again next year and
then in twenty twenty seven y'all can come hang out
with us at training camp. Also, we need to mention that.
And I guess maybe I'm burying one of the leads
a little bit because we already know kind of the
outcome to this. But JC Horn did not practice today,
so you know when we're seeing And I meant to
say this a couple of minutes ago when someone said, hey,
(16:51):
some of the Cleveland reporters are saying that the Cleveland
wide receivers, you know, had a good day or made
some plays out there. Yeah, but it was also in
the the absence of Carolina's number one cornerback J C. Horn,
who was in a car accident on his way to
practice this morning. Now we have been told and jac
has tweeted himself that everything is fine, But Dave Canalis
(17:12):
told us after practice that JC required I believe it
was eight stitches in his left thumb as a result
of that accident, and he of course did not participate
today and will not play on Friday, which was the plan.
Starters will play on Friday in the first preseason game.
And Dave Canalis did tell us that specifically to the
offensive starters. He would like to see maybe a couple
(17:34):
of series. They're aiming for eight to twelve plays overall.
If they have a quick three and out, four and
out in the first series, they're probably coming right back
out there. If they put together a long offensive drive
that results in points, they might not come back out.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
It just depends.
Speaker 6 (17:49):
But J. C.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Horn was supposed to be playing on Friday against Cleveland,
but he won't.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Now.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Good news is there's no long term reason to be
concerned about this, but they're going to hold him out
the rest of the week and Friday's preseason game, so
we'll get to it. All your thoughts on the fan
duel text line, A lot to talk about. Zach Jackson,
the Athletic Browns beat Reporter, coming up in twenty five minutes.

Sports Radio ninety two to seven w f n z
KB and smoke with you on a Wednesday. The first
joint practice of training camp is in the books Panthers
and Browns. Today the weather let up. It was Dave
Canalys walked into the post practice press conference and said,
he said a little prayer and asked the Lord today,
just give us a window with no rain today, Just
(18:52):
give us a window with no rain. And it didn't
rain all the way up until the time they called
the last play of joint practice.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
Today. We were all prepared.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
I did not bring the umbrella smoke and I wore
our rain Coach didn't need them. It was a relatively
dry practice out there, and that was a godsend. Apparently,
according to Dave Canalis, it was awesome.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
No, literally, right as the horn yeah sounded off, the
rain started spitting yet again, and as we were walking
up to the stadium for the press conference.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
That's what it let loose.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
So you could ask for a better start and a
better finish for joint practice. In that sense, that rain
was somehow able to just hold up a little bit.
So I guess there's a wartex fury on the football field.
I guess Texter said, KB.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Do you think it was deliberate that the Panthers put
the defense as far away as they did from you
guys in the media. Are they trying to hide the defense?
Speaker 3 (19:42):
No?
Speaker 2 (19:43):
I mean, I guess no. I don't think so. I
anything's possible. I don't know what conversations were had. I
don't know why they decided to put each unit where
they did. I was actually thankful that we got a
closer look at the Panthers offense today. I do want
to see the defense, and we got to see a
little bit of it. The problem again was that all
of the assembled media was along one set of end zones.
(20:05):
We were all together up against defense. The Panthers offense
against the Browns defense was up close to us. So
we got to see Bryce Young and the offense operate,
but we couldn't, you know, we really had to work
to see the defense up against Joe Flacco and Kenny
Pickett and shaduor Sanders today And according to Kevin Stefanski afterward, today,
they are still working through who will start on Friday
(20:27):
night for Cleveland, but it's being reported that at shaduor Sanders,
and it seems to be that it will be Shadoor Sanders,
but Stefanski didn't really want to declare that.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I guess after practice today.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
It sounds more and more like based on what it is,
it's like, all right, who is and who is not playing?
Because I don't think they're playing Flacco, which makes sense
he's forty years old or damn near wright at it,
so I don't think they would have wasted any of
his snaps on preseason games or getting him hurt. I
think Kenny Pickett's may be dealing with something to where
he can't play in games, but he can do enough
for joint practices. And I definitely know Dylan Gabriel's banged
(21:01):
up a little bit more. Uh So it's just I wonder.
I think what they're trying to figure out right now
is how are they going to distribute the snaps because
they want to get a lot of Schadur, but they
don't want to play Shadear for a whole game. And
then the problem is at that point with all three
quarterbacks lingering injuries and one of those quarterbacks not even
going to play in one of these games, They're like,
all right, how much do we want to play Tyler
(21:22):
Snoop Huntley because he literally just got here twenty four
hours ago.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
Yeah, what does that do for them? By the way,
I don't think it does anything for They need a body,
right because some of these guys are dealing with injuries.
I don't imagine Snowpontley will be on the roster come
week one. So yeah, of course you're playing Shaduur Sanders
probably a lot like if I'm Stefanski and he doesn't
give a hoot what I think about anything. But if
I'm Kevin Stefanski, I'm playing I'm playing Shadur Sanders the
entire first half, oh on Friday Night, if not the
(21:47):
first three quarters of that game on Friday Night. So
you know we'll get a pretty good look at him.
I believe that now.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
You know.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
It's I don't know how many series the Panthers starting
defense will get against Shador Sanders on Friday Night. I
don't think that that will go super well for him.
But then he's going to get a steady diet of
the Panthers second and third stringers defensively. So Friday night
should be interesting for a bit, and then it will,
of course devolve into the usual preseason festivities in the
(22:14):
second half, where you're watching names of guys who will
at best be practice squad players, most likely on somebody
else's roster here in a couple of weeks, once the
regular season begins. Seven oh four, five, seven ninety six ten.
We had a text for a minute ago, say, k B,
did you'll see the Cam Jackson rep where he obliterated
the Cleveland Browns center. It's funny we were standing right
(22:36):
next to that. We had offensive versus defensive line off
to our left. I'm trying to set the scene, so it's.
Speaker 4 (22:43):
Sposically Cleveland offensive line Carolina de correctxet.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
Thank you for that.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
So Cleveland's offensive line, Carolina's defensive line. So it wasn't
team eleven on eleven, but we got to see those
drills pretty close to us. It just imagine, if you will,
I'll put my play by play guy's shoes on for
a second. You know, Smoke and I are staring long
ways out onto two fields, one to our right, one
to our left. On the right field is the Panthers
offense versus the Cleveland defense. On the left field is
(23:08):
Cleveland's offense versus Carolina's defense. But before that, we had
that drill that we're talking about right in front of us.
And when Cam Jackson, who is enormous, what Cam Jackson
was taking him with the sixth round out of Florida?
Speaker 3 (23:19):
Or was it?
Speaker 2 (23:19):
It wasn't seventh. No Horn was the seventh rounder. So
Cam Jackson, I believe was the sixth round.
Speaker 4 (23:24):
I think it was one of those picks that they
had in that ginormous trade with.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
No fifth round. He was a fifth round round.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
I think they gave up their sixth round pick to
get Princely Uman Miellen.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
If I'm not mistaken, sure, well I don't.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
Cam Jackson obliterated a man who I don't even think
is on the Cleveland roster. Like we couldn't find the
guy's name on the roster. All of us had rosters today.
No one could find this dude on the roster. But
Cam Jackson, I mean that he's enormous, six six, three
hundred and thirty five pounds. I don't know how much
you'll hear from him when the season starts. If you're
talking a lot about Cam Jackson, it's probably because guys
(24:01):
got hurt and that's not a good thing. But you
can see why they took him and why they believe
they can turn him into something because there is the
obvious size at six six three thirty five, but there's
a there's a mean streak there too, and we saw
some of that today. So he's a dude, laws, Yeah,
he does. He's got big paws on him. That's a
guy they're trying to develop over the next year or two,
(24:22):
and today was a pretty good first look at him.
I thought, Bobby Jackson, I'm sorry, Bobby Brown, pardon me.
I thought Bobby Brown had a couple of really nice reps.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
That guy.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
You can see again, same kind of thing. Why they
signed him in free agency. His size and his push,
just the inertia of his frame stands out right away.
Good luck staying in front of that guy. And that's
what he's here to do. Like, he's there to take
up space, to force double teams, to clear up room
for you know, other guys to make plays. And you
saw some of that today. Oh, something we haven't addressed yet.
(24:54):
The Bagel guy's the latest to ask about it, but
I think two others asked already. To start the show,
what about it versus Miles Garrett, you know the TFB
with another one. How was our offensive line versus their
defensive line, specifically Ikey versus Miles Garrett.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
I won't get to look at the film.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Dave's not gonna invite me in for a film session,
so I'll probably never see it. But I I didn't
In watching a ton of the Panthers offense, I recall
really only one or two times that the pockets seemed
to cave in on Bryce or that you know, pressure
got there to him. Now, of course nobody was hitting
quarterbacks today, but I really didn't notice much in the
(25:32):
way of Bryce. Like Bryce got to throw in rhythm today,
Bryce got the ball out quickly. There was I mean,
there were no deflected passes that I can recall. I'm
not going to say that that Garrett didn't win any reps,
because you know, when you go out there and break
down the film, there's probably one or two that he did.
But Ikey didn't stand out at all today for the
wrong reasons. As we were watching the offense and team session.
Speaker 4 (25:53):
No, especially in eleven on eleven, I was able to
see Bryce own pretty clearly when he was in the
pocket from like from the tip of his right finger
to the tip of his left finger.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
I can see it most plays.
Speaker 6 (26:03):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (26:03):
The only time it really looked like the pocket was
cluttered was when Andy Dunkan was out there, so that
was more two on twos. But yeah, nothing really that
made me go, oh, no, Icky. I mean, the only
thing that we used to saw for Miles Garrett was
when he was working on past rush at five feet
away from us.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Dude, thank god, I'm just can I just tell y'all man,
And if you have one like this text the text
line seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten, like
the one athlete you saw in person that just stopped
you in your tracks. Now, this is the second time
I've seen Miles Garrett in person, first time I've seen
him in pads. It just doesn't seem real. It's like
(26:39):
he's out of a comic book. Human beings aren't supposed
to be built like that. There's a very Julius Pepper's
quality to Miles Garrett. When he walks by you, and
he was standing in front of us, what twenty feet
fifteen feet in front of us for about the first
twenty thirty minutes of practice.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
He was doing a lot of work to decide. But
it's like, yeah, yeah, he.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
Was built in a laboratory somewhere. The heat Fanus Miles
was built in the label perfect.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
He was that guy. They built that guy in a laboratory.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
There are just a handful of guys like him, like
Julius Pepper's that you're just in awe of how they're built,
and he's one of them. I'm just looking at him
and I don't want it to be all weird, but
like this dude, he's got muscles on top of muscles.
He moves so fluidly. Nothing seems difficult, like with that
that frame on him, that level of muscle mass, like
(27:24):
you'd think he'd labor a little bit more to do
the No, it's all smooth, it's all fluid. It's just
overwhelming when you see him, Like, God almighty, I forget
some humans are built that way.
Speaker 4 (27:35):
Now because he's doing all of his past Russ reps
right in front of us, and we're thinking, oh, he's
gonna get a little tiry. He just does it effortlessly,
comes back, does it right over against like I'm watching
one of the goats at his craft. I was kind
of giddy as a football fan. I'm like, that's one
of the best right there. Yeah, that guy just got
paid forty million, big ones and that's why.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
So it was pretty cool to see that. Like I said,
I think I told you, I told Colin this.
Speaker 4 (27:58):
There's only two more guys that I've been more or
like just wowed with their physical appearance. And one of
them's Julius Peppers and I saw Pep Oldman Pep like
twenty seventeen.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
Yeah, and Cam Newton. That's it.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
That's yeah, No, that's a good one. Recently for me,
it was Victor Wimbayama to that was another one.
Speaker 4 (28:16):
Unfortunately did not get to close, get close to that
close to him during the matchup earlier disition.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
But still, like you, if you were just in the
lower bowl of the Specialis that night, you know you
can see it right away like that. He just he
doesn't look like anybody else out there.
Speaker 6 (28:29):
On the floor.
Speaker 4 (28:30):
Quand Jefferies, Yeah, poor to Kwan j I remember bucking
that shot without any effort.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
WHAT'SO whoever? I'm like, come on, give them a break man.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Yeah, seven O four numbers, just said KB. I saw
Garrett new his press or with no shirt on today.
He's an absolute unit. That's right, he did because I would.
I would do everything shirtless if I look like that dude.
Hell yeah, I would do everything without my shirt on.
I'd go to the bank with no shirt on. I'd
go to PTA meetings with no sh I might wear
a you know, I might wear a fish net tank top.
You know, I'd go pick up, you know, fast food
(28:58):
with no shirt. I do everything with no shirt on.
If you know, I was an eight percent body fat
and built like the universal soldier, like he's just unlike anyone.
Here's another one too. Dwight Howard was another one for
me where when I walked past Dwight Howard for the
first time, the first thing I thought was you're not
seven feet tall. But it doesn't matter because you're a
unit of a human being. So he's another one that
I throw in the lot. Talk about broad shoulders, oh, big,
(29:20):
deep energy, prime Dwight Howard. There you go, there's another one.
Dwight Howard is absolutely it all right, These are coming
in real quick. Let me read a few of these.
Scott the Platypus, said John Cena two thousand and eight,
Charlotte Race. He said, big boy, we had to cut
an x Excel Cruise shirt three quarters up the sleeve
so he could fit his arms into the shirt.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
That sounds about.
Speaker 4 (29:38):
Remember he did like They had a celebrity game show
where he was where driver celebrities were in race cars.
He won a competition get him getting into a race car.
Was one of the funniest things because he's got all
these shoulders on top of his shoulders and he's trying
to race the race car. It was one of the
most hilarious things ever.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
Oh, no doubt about it. A few more of these
coming to Julius Peppers A lot we said. Oh Charlotte
bleacher Bump said, I ran into Patrick Ewing and a
Whole Foods.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
He's enormous. Yeah. Patrick Ewing is another one.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
When he was with the Hornets, I remember walking up
on him for the first time thinking, Yeah, I don't
know how anybody could guard this dude, except for other
dudes who looked like Patrick Ewing of course. Seven oh
four five, seven oh ninety six ten hit us up
on the FanDuel text line. Gas House Earl said, the rock.
That's a great one. It also reminds me of that
picture of the rock standing next to Charles Barkley, who's
standing next to shaq And I mean just that difference
(30:26):
in I mean, the rock looks like a teenager standing
next to Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neill. But it's six'
four probably what two hundred and ninety. Pounds the rock
is an absolute giant still and looks like a baby
next to those. Guys oh quick note on this on
practice today, too as these keep coming. IN i walked.
IN i don't think you were with me at this.
(30:47):
Point it was me And Julian council shout out to
our Buddy julian walking in, today and the first person
we see walking onto the practice field Was Deshaun. WATSON
i did not expect To Sewan watson to make the
trip today for joint, practice.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Or to make any trips at all this year For Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Browns, now when you think about, it when you're making
the kind of money he, is you, know and you're
not playing this, YEAR i guess it's still, guaranteed but you,
know you want to want, TO i, guess be a good,
teammate show up to work at least feel like you're
kind of earning the you, know two hundred and forty
million guaranteed or whatever the hell crazy it. Is but
(31:27):
he was, there AND i did not Expect Seawan watson
to be there.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
Today you don't expect. Him but did it make? Sense it's, like,
oh he's not that far away From. Clemson he probably
is going to go down there tomorrow to talk To
dabo or something like. That, yeah that's probably what he's.
Doing could be and, YEAH i think that's probably what it.
Is but it's just, reminders like for as much as
you want to get Onto David temper, rightfully so thank
(31:51):
god he decided to walk away when he wanted a
fully guaranteed. Contract, yeah because how bad of a situation
his franchise would be if they gave him the fully
guaranteed offer and then he played like he has In.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
Cleveland, yeah, yeah it was a, surprise but you're probably.
Right i'd imagine he's taking the trip down To clemson.
Anyway a lot of folks saying That shaq is their
guy that they were just in awe. Of that's probably
like one of the top five What shack's. HIT i
remember standing. That first of, ALL i Saw shaq for
the first time at the old. Hive i've told the
story as a, kid FIRST nba, Game hornets And magic
(32:23):
at the Old Charlotte. Coliseum we accidentally end up floor
level looking for our. Seats we have no idea where we're.
GOING a nice usher takes us to our, seats walks
us across the floor under the basket on The orlando,
end and like eight nine year old me walks By
shack AND i Thought i'd seen my first ever. Giant
LIKE i thought that's what giants really, were and That
shaq was one of. Them and then again as a
(32:44):
grown man at The Charlotte All Star game a handful
of years, Ago shaq seated was looking the eye to
eye on THE tnt. Set so he really, is you,
know one of those those mysteries of. Humanity how could
a man get that? BIG i love?
Speaker 6 (32:58):
That all?
Speaker 2 (32:59):
Right, well come back to The we Got Zach jackson
of The athletic covers The. Browns he's coming up in
the next. Segment right, now we go to smoke on the.
Headlines who is? Smoke where is? Smoke where there's, smoke there's.
Fire let's go what you?
Speaker 3 (33:14):
Got all?
Speaker 4 (33:15):
Right, Well caroline And cleveland's not the only joint practice
in THE nfl, today there was a joint practice between
The commanders and The patriots and there was a little
bit of a kerfuffle as some guys were jaw jacket
and getting some pushing and. Shoving it led to a
pile And Mike, vrabel the head coach of The, patriots football,
guy football, guy broke up the, pile but he didn't
(33:35):
come away, unharmed as he got a little bit of
blood on his cheek during. Practice, so, uh for my,
opinion sounds Like Mike rabel's already in mid season.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
Form, yeah that sounds about. Right was that one made me?
Speaker 2 (33:48):
Laugh i'm glad he's, Okay BUT i, mean just the
epitome of football.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Guy what else you? Got all?
Speaker 4 (33:52):
Right and we've talked a little bit about THE espn
merger with THE nfl. Network Roger goodell was on THE
Nfl network earlier, today SAYS espn has purchased the rights
to the Red zone, name allowing him to use the
format for uther sports moving, forward including a potential Red
zone style broadcast for college.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
Football there we, go all.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Right Zach jackson Of The, athletic A browns beat, reporter
coming up, Next Sports radio ninety two to seven wfn
z oh The FanDuel text lines hummin to start the. Show,
(34:38):
charlotte we appreciate you as. Always we just got to
talking About Miles garrett today at. Practice he's one of
those athletes who just reminds you there are some humans
that are built. Differently we had one here in The
carolinas for a long. Time Julius peppers was one of.
Those and you're sending yours in right, now everybody From
Yao ming To andre The, giant let's, see the big
show came. In The president just came. In Karl malone
(35:02):
made the text line keep those. Coming Warren sapp as.
Well Warren SAP's a good. One but let's talk about
a guy who's probably no longer enamored by the sheer
size Of Miles garrett because he covers The Cleveland browns every,
Day Zach jackson of The. Athletic we hung out with
him for much of the morning at practice. Today he's
kind enough to hop on the hotline to talk about
today's joint. Practice, ZACH i appreciate, you, brother how are you?
Speaker 6 (35:25):
GOOD i don't get tired of Watching Miles garrett because
he is one of, one so sometimes we get tired
of his. Antics BUT i mean he was right in
front of both of us today for, like you, know
the first forty five minutes or. What he's not a human, Being,
no he moves in a. Way and here's my Best
mile story for. You SO i think it was a
second or third year AND i had seen a video
(35:46):
On instagram or something of him dunking of basketball and
ripping the. Backboard and this is, like you, know In
sebruary Of. March so they get back to work and
Like may AND i see him after practice AND i, say,
hey you, know is this, Real, like tell me about?
It and he looks at. Me he dead, seriously he,
goes you think that's the first TIME i ever did,
That And I'm. Miles the rest of us don't rip
down multiple back. Forths SO i JUST i thought it
(36:08):
was a valid. Question but sorry for At.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
That's.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
FANTASTIC i, mean he really, is, Man he's in a different,
universe a different category than.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
Most what did you?
Speaker 2 (36:18):
Think let me start, here because you, know it feels
like The panthers coaches were pretty happy with the way
that their offense performed today against The cleveland. DEFENSE i
told folks that you, know we were that was the
closest action to us and that was the easiest to.
See so let me start. There what did you think
of The cleveland d versus The carolina offense?
Speaker 6 (36:37):
Today, YEAH i think it was a fast moving. PRACTICE
i think that's what they want to. SEE i was
fairly impressed with With Bryce young in that. OFFENSE i,
mean this is a pretty good, defense, right so it's
figuring some things. Out it does not have its best,
Linebacker Jeremiah Wisu, pormo who might never play, again and
then the second best, Linebacker Jordan, hicks, retired and obviously
(36:58):
you're not Getting miles in it in a game, environment,
Right but like, that The browns have some guys on,
defense they have a third year into the same. System so,
yeah that's a really good challenge that they're going against.
Them and LIKE i, SAID i didn't see the ball
on the ground a. Lot WHEN i saw a couple
of miscues from The, PANTHERS i thought they came back
and did well with. It so you, Know i'm not
going to go full low bar and say they were
(37:19):
better than the offense on the other, field because of
course they. Were BUT i think both coaching, staff you,
know unless there's something we don't know. ABOUT i think
both coaching staff have to feel good about the two
hours or so that they got into, it because they
kept moving and there were moments for both.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
Sides just real quick sidebar going back a couple of.
Months we, were of, course reacting to The Micah parsons
trade request or demand the other, day AND i, said,
Listen i'm not really buying it, yet because my at
one point we thought That Miles garrett might be Leaving
cleveland and he's still.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
There what back then did you think.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
That was there was a real threat of him leaving
or did you just, think, hey as long as they
come with the right, money this is all going to get.
Speaker 6 (37:53):
Fixed, WELL i thought they should have traded, him BUT
i understand that they, didn't you, know and that's kind of.
Contradictory but he really is one of, one and they
first of, all they couldn't be the guys who traded
four To Shawn watson and traded the Way Miles garrett,
Right and the other legs of that are that they
could not admit that they're in the place that they're, in,
(38:16):
Right they're in a bad. Place but you, know they
still Have Denzel ward on defense very much in his.
Prime miles is going to be, thirty but he's very
much in his. Prime and they just weren't going to
find the right. VALUE i, MEAN i Think buffalo was
willing to give two one plus, more but is that
enough For Miles. Garrett they were saying, No so they
found their. Resolution it got. Ugly it's always been a
(38:38):
little complicated With, miles but mostly because they haven't. Won
and what happened is Last december he decided to start
talking publicly about how they hadn't, won and he didn't
say anything as the rest of us didn't. Know it's
just weird to hear, that, Right so lots of things
are awkward in this organization right. Now they should be
better than they've, been but they're in a really bad
place because of It's Shawn watson trade and having an older.
(39:01):
Roster but they're not really worried About miles running at
a gas.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Anytimes, Well i'm glad you said that BECAUSE i just
mentioned in the previous segment that maybe the biggest surprise
of the morning to me was walking into practice AND
i look up And i'm ten feet From Deshaun.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
WATSON i don't know what you.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
THOUGHT i didn't necessarily expect him to be, there but
it does make sense that he is. There, like is
should we be surprised that he made the? Trip what
is his level of involvement inside the? Building and With Jimmy,
haslam you, know recently saying that they made a, Mistake,
like how awkward is?
Speaker 6 (39:27):
That, WELL i, mean they made a huge, mistake but
they still owe that mistake about one hundred and seventy
million on the, cap so they can't send him anywhere quite, yet, Right,
no you, KNOW I i'm mildly. Surprised, sure but they're
treating this like a regular practice, week, Right AND i
think that was evidenced by some other things that went on.
Today and so they left yesterday and they were only
(39:49):
on the field for a couple of hours today and
they're not back out formally on the field right Until friday.
Evening so they have everybody here because they're going to
go about their meetings and their evaluation points and everything they.
Do And deshawn's been involved in. That so if you
count To sean And Tyler, huntley that's six quarterbacks right
now on the. Roster shawn he's on the. Ninety he's
(40:10):
not on the active AND i don't think he will.
Be but, yeah they're they're. Bad they're in a bad
spot because of. That and you, KNOW i don't think
he's ever going to play. Again BUT i think it's
eleven years since they've been back in ninety nine and
they've played three or more starting quarterbacks at this, stage
there's no reason to think it'll be any different this.
Year and if guys become not available for various, Reasons
(40:33):
i'm not sure you can totally rule it out because
that's just the story of The Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (40:37):
Browns, well that that situation that you keep alluding to
certainly worth the conversation for if you're just tuning. In Zach,
jackson the athletic covers The. Browns he's with us here
hanging out reacting to joint practice. Today you, Know Joe,
flacco can you pick? It Dylan, Gabriels hurt Sa Door.
Sanders they just signed New, Puntley as you, said what
are they? Doing, like what do you think they're they're
hoping comes out of all.
Speaker 6 (40:57):
Of this that they get to number one pick next? Year,
Probably but you, know you know some of them are thinking,
that and they probably have to think that, way, Right
but the truth is the coaching staff can't think, that
and the roster can't think, That AND i Think Joe
flacco probably gives them the best chance to go out
and be competitive. Early five of the first six are
(41:18):
against the teams that made the playoffs last, year and
the other ones against The bengals. Too if they would
have got, in maybe could have won it all, Right
so they have to show up ready to. Play And
joe's seems so. Much he's the only one who's been
on this team, before in this, huddle in this. Offense you,
know there's been some speculation that they wanted to Be
Kenny pickage is because he's. Younger they feel like he
has some, upside WHETHER i agree or, not and it's mostly.
(41:41):
Not he got hurt on the fourth practice and has
not had a full practice. Since, Right and now by
the time they get back to work On, monday we're
into Mid. August, right we're into the second to last
week of. Preseason so they Drafted Dylan gabriel in the
top one, hundred which stunned, everybody and they Drafted shador
on the last day After Dylan, gabriel which Undercut Dylan
(42:01):
shador and everybody. Else so it's a. Mess nobody benefits
from four quarterbacks out, there and the quarterback of the
future is probably not on the. Team, okay if there
is a guy that has a chance at should or.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
STANDARD i didn't mean to step on you right, there
But i'm glad you said what you, said because The shador,
THING i was, LIKE i MEAN i looked Over zach
at one point in practice today AND i was, like
what numbers SHAUDOR i? Forget so THEN i locked in
and you, know as best we could from the depth
that we were at to try to figure out and
watch the reps that he was out there. For did
anything stand out to? You and, overall how would you
rate the way that he's performed thus far in?
Speaker 6 (42:33):
Camp, well he didn't complete a pass over five yards.
Today he didn't really have many chances To you would
think if he was starting the Game, friday give him
a couple extra, chances, Right but they're. Not so it's,
interesting you, Know LIKE i, SAID i just don't Think
Dylan gabriel has a chance out. There and he has a,
hamstring they, said so he's been kind of. LIMITED i don't.
(42:55):
KNOW i Think shador will struggle On. FRIDAY i Think
shudor will make a couple Good he has obvious natural
talent with accuracy and the ability to layer. It you.
Know one of the knocks on him in colleges he
didn't handle pressure real. Well well in a preseason, environment
he's going to be under. That so he's a long
term development. Piece he can use these next few weeks
to change some. Opinions we'll, See BUT i just, thought you,
(43:18):
know why Does tyler huntly need these snaps or if
these guys are, Hurt, like why can't it wait until they're?
Back like why wouldn't he get a couple extra reps
when he's a rookie that clearly needs, it but they
chose not. To so we'll. See we'll see How friday,
goes and we'll see how the rest of it, goes
because the expectation is that they'll have all four of
them available next week when they go To philly for
two joint practices and then a preseason, game which will
(43:40):
be just the rookie quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (43:41):
Playing all, right two quick, things we'll get you out of.
Here Zach, jackson the. Athletic he's with. Us he you're
hanging out talking about joint. Practice today we go back
to the. Draft The jags trade with The. Browns jacksonville
Takes Travis. Hunter we're going to see them In week.
One cleveland ends up With Mason, graham a player who
was very popular down here going into the. Draft how
is you know what's been the report On Mason graham
(44:03):
Though feig in training.
Speaker 6 (44:03):
Camp, yeah he doesn't get a lot of attention right
because of should or because of everything. Else but he's
a good. Player he's off to a good, start immediate
day one, starter which you would. Expect and you, know
his job is to clear people out of the way
For Miles. Garrett his job is to make sure the
teams can't always double and Triple Miles. Garrett so you,
know we're just starting to see, that, Right But mason
(44:25):
G graham is what they called a clean. Prospect you,
know he doesn't look like most top five defensive tackles
who are just absolute freaks his. Nature but this guy
was one of the best foot players in college football
for three years and HE'S nfl, Ready so we'll. See
they made that long term play, there you, know they
picked up the extra first. Rounder as you, mentioned like
this is about going. Forward it's just there's a lot
(44:47):
of awkward decisions that need to be made on the
way because one of the few strengths they have is
an offensive line before the five starters or free agents
after this, year you, know it could be the worst quarterback,
group worst wide receiver, group worst running back, group at
least in the bottom, three, right and that makes it
hard to. Win so then even if you play great,
defense what. Happens so they just, didn't LIKE i, said
in a really awkward spot to where a lot of
(45:09):
these offensive linemen are top of the line And denzel
Ward is And miles Garrett, is there's just a lot
of question. Marks so they need to find a way
to win some, games and they need some young players
to show there on their way up or there's going
to be some really hard decisions to make about who
should be in charge going.
Speaker 2 (45:24):
Forward all, right last, thing and in that, front what
does all that mean For Kevin. Stefanski i've been trying
to tune Into Cleveland Sports radio this week and finding
out what the temperature in the room. Is but you, know,
if like you, say they're in contention for the number
one overall. Pick what does that mean For Kevin, stefanski
a guy who was lauded by the fan.
Speaker 6 (45:41):
Base they're not that long, ago, yeah AND i think
he's a smart guy who's done a good. Job but
after you go three and, fourteen, right who's? Safe SO
i think it comes down to, this are they? Competitive
are they showing signs of being a well coached and
on the up team that just doesn't have enough overall?
Talent or is it a? Mess and there is Another
(46:02):
is there Another Quinn chanja can incident As miles whining
again like you did last? Year you, know are they
playing six quarterbacks or just? Two all of these things to.
Go but people are really on edge because people had
to convince, themselves and by, PEOPLE i mean the fan
base mostly. Right people had to convince themselves to Like Deshaun,
watson and as soon as they, did they saw it
was the worst trade IN nfl. History and then The
browns one to eleven games and Had flacco for a
(46:23):
month and everything was trending up and expectations were, high
and they totally crashed last. Year so people are just set.
Up they know what this cap situation is they know
the age of the roster and they want to see.
Wins SO i think if they don't deliver a certain
number of wins and a certain number of good young,
players then it's not going to be comfortable for, anybody
and we have to see how it turns.
Speaker 2 (46:43):
Out, zach great thing you did, today my. Friend thank
you for the, time and we'll see You friday.
Speaker 6 (46:47):
Night he's a Super bowl.
Speaker 2 (46:52):
Jackson of the ATHLETIC a get. Out you know what's
funny about. That AN nfl writer That i've known for
a law long time wrote earlier today that he thinks
it's not that crazy The panthers could end up in
the Super.
Speaker 3 (47:06):
Bowl i'm not.
Speaker 2 (47:07):
Kidding we'll talk about it. Next Sports radio ninety two
seven WF z
