Speaker 2 (00:24):
It is trade deadline day in the NFL, and while
most of the league is buzzing about who's buying and
who's selling, and boy do we have a lot to
talk about on that front already here in Carolina, the
question is kind of simple. Should the Panthers do anything
at all? Because for the first time since twenty nineteen,
the Panthers are above five hundred, As you've likely heard
(00:46):
five and four after going into lambeau Field and stunning
the Packers forty eight hours ago. That was a statement
when it displayed toughness and resilience and signs of all
the right things finally starting to happen for the Panthers,
and it was the latest sign that this team is
learning how to win football games again. That David Tepper
quite frankly, after what appears to be a real learning
(01:08):
curve for ownership, something we knew was a real thing,
but almost no fan base is going to take much
consideration of in real time. When things are bad, we
all get that, right, but David Tepper has seemingly figured
some things out as an owner. Charlotte f season the playoffs,
Carolina is above five hundred and specific to the Panthers,
we do have to be real like this still feels
(01:29):
like the year before the year to a whole lot
of people. The signs of growth are clearly there, but
you could easily argue that the foundation isn't finished. This
roster was short on overall talent before this season, and
Dan Morgan knows that, and he's been working his tail
off to build depth, to build competition, to build a
roster that's strong from top to bottom, and that kind
(01:51):
of work is done through the draft, not through desperate
mid season trades. And they aren't all desperate. Some trades
are good. I will readily acknowledge that. And still it's
the NFL. Anything can happen before four pm today. Maybe
there's a move that makes sense, maybe someone becomes available
who helps the cause this year and beyond, or maybe
the smart play is patience continuing to let this team
(02:13):
grow and to learn and to fight its way toward
what's shaping up to be something of a fun run
both this year and hopefully next year as well. And
you know, something to be said for allowing a young
team that's doing it together to continue doing it together,
learning together with so many first and second year guys contributing,
(02:34):
not bringing in outside forces to mess up the mojo.
There are arguments to be made in a lot of
different directions here, So, Panthers fans, as the clock tick
towards that four pm deadline today, what do you want
to see, if anything? Do you want to see Dan
Morgan make a move and go for it now, or
do you trust the plan to keep building for the
long haul, to keep the draft picks and build the
(02:55):
quote unquote right way. Let's talk about it seven oh
four five seven h ninety six in Hit us up
on the fan duel text line, same number if you
want to give us a call and chat the old
fashioned way on x formerly Twitter at Kyle Bailey Club.
It's at Kyle Bailey ce lub hey real quick. Nick
Carboni's back at three forty five for the first time
in several weeks. A proud new papa. He's been on
(03:17):
paternity leave. Right smoke with a pe poo pa puh
paternity right, you got it? Uh, puh like papa paternity,
pup maternity, like pap Paul. Yeah, like paternity pup maternity,
not that one. No, honestly, I should just start saying
that from now on. If I don't know, it's like
pup maternity. I wouldn't recommend that. No, I wouldn't recommend that.
But Nick Carbonie, a proud new papa coming off paternity leave,
will join us for the first time in weeks at
(03:38):
three forty five. We'll talk Deadline, We'll talk Panthers, we'll
talk Hornets. Tonight they face the literal worst team in
the NBA, in the New Orleans Pelicans. However, LaMelo Ball
is out again tonight. It's that you know, pesky ankle
impingement that we've unfortunately been talking about again for the
last couple of days now. So no LaMelo tonight. They
did win the last time, out beat the Jazz two
(03:59):
nights ago without the services of LaMelo or Brandon Miller,
but they'll have to do it again tonight. And you'd
like to think that with the additions that they've made
in the offseason, that the Pelicans are a team that
they can beat without LaMelo Baw. Now, of course, I
say that the Pelicans are no doubt hungry for their
first win. There's turmoil down there, the head coaches already
on the hot seat, and the whole NBA is talking
(04:19):
about how they blue draft picks and have put that
organization in a miserable, miserable place. So anyway, there's a
lot to talk about here on a Tuesday afternoon. Also,
Joe Ovius back at four twenty five. Ryan McGee has
become a fan favorite on this show for completely understandable
and obvious reasons. He wishes for me to pass along
(04:40):
to you his apologies today. He told me this morning
that it was time for his weekly apology that he
needs to move again for the third straight week. So
we love Ryan. We're happy to accommodate a schedule. He'll
join us tomorrow on the show at four twenty five
because he will be airborne today during his regularly scheduled conversation.
And then finally five o'clock today, Jake Delone, Panthers legend,
former quarterback, Hall of Remember and Panthers Radio Network color
(05:02):
analyst Jake delom is back at five o'clock.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Smoke what's going on?
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Also, want to let people know that you have a
chance to win tickets to Game three of the Charlotte
FC playoff series against NYFC. Winner takes all literally and
figuratively for both the people in this text spread and
the MLS Playoffs pair of tickets.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
All you have to do is text.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
To word crown see rown to the fandle text line
to enter for a chance to win the tickets for
Friday's match.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
There you go, all right, So what do you?
Speaker 2 (05:33):
I don't think the Panthers are doing anything in the
next fifty two minutes personally do you? But since we're here,
and historically you and I get inside the hour, be
it NFL tradeline, trade deadline or NBA trade deadline, anytime
it seems we get within the final hour and nothing's
been done, Nothing's going to happen, right, That's more or
less how this goes most of.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
The time, especially in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Yeah, I definitely think even though we see the NFL
become more active on trade deadline or the day's leading
up to it, I still think it's a scenario where
not every team needs to make a trade like we
see happen in different sports like the NHL, in MLB
and the NBA. So I don't think it'll happen. I'll say,
if they do make a deal, I'll equate it to this.
(06:18):
It'll maybe be a slightly bigger move than when the
Hornets traded for Brad Wannamaker.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
God, I hope. So that yielded nothing. Yeah, but they
brought him in for death, I know, but that also
just yielded nothing.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
So yeah, slightly bigger version of a Brad Wannamaker deal.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
That's what I'm expecting if they make a trade Brad.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
You guys want Trey Henderson. Brad Wannamaker's all I got.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
I always feel terrible when I point out the lack
of athleticism and pro athletes relative to a talking head
like me. But Brad Wanamaker truly is one of the
least athletic NBA players I've ever seen in my life.
Like and obviously he's a good basketball player global scale,
but in the NBA, it always felt like the one
thing he was short on was athletics. You can definitely
do that. Loved him, Eric did love him, You're right,
(07:04):
he did love him all right. Seven oh four five
seven ninety six ten. Panthercliff said, who see exactly who Brad.
Just look it up, Brad Wannamaker. Couple of years ago,
James Brego teams. It was a thing for a little while.
It was Lamello's rookie year. Yeah, yeah, it happened, Wolfpac.
James says, I'm interested in mid size to small moves.
I would have been interested in Myers. I'm interested in
the Joku, though it seems the Browns may want to
(07:26):
keep him. I would hold off on any big moves though.
That's why I don't mention linebacker or edge, because I
consider those to be holes we need to fill with
big moves or via first or second round picks. Yeah,
I mean, I agree with that last part. If you're
not swinging big that fill those holes in the draft.
I if Dan Morgan's drafts the last two years and
(07:47):
what they appear to be through nine weeks are fruitful
drafts that have yielded real NFL players, you know, the
full caliber of which we don't know yet. Maybe Trevin Wallace,
you know, tops out at a good player. Maybe Trevin
Wallace becomes an All Pro linebacker. Don't know, We'll have
to wait and find out. But they appear to have
yielded at least real NFL players. That's a good thing, obviously,
(08:07):
So to me, if Dan has stacked back to back
drafts and you're not a team that you believe you're
ready to compete for the NFC, okay, well, then let
these guys grow and learn together the rest of the way.
Let them continue to play and learn and grow and
evolve together, learn the system, see what kind of magic
carpet ride they can take you on themselves, and then
(08:28):
go try to stack a third strong draft on top
of this one. All right, I want to win all
the time, and I think a lot of you are
the same way. And you're all very impatient with the Panthers.
Completely understandable because after seven years of an aptitude and
hurt feelings and disappointment and embarrassment, everybody just wants this
team to win. Well, the good news is they are
(08:50):
winning now more than they are losing. At least for now.
They're five and four with a chance to get to
six and four against a very bad football team. So
they are more or less where you would like for
them to be. They are winning more than losing right now.
But yesterday, when I asked Steve Smith, senior and Smoke.
I don't know if you had this audio or not,
and I should have asked you this now. I asked
Steve about the possibility of playoffs or if it was
okay in his mind that I'm paraphrasing here for you know,
(09:14):
fans to make the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
This is what Steve said.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
You should be thinking playoffs, and I get it. But
it's also one of those where I don't know, going
to the playoffs the way this team or just in
the past, going to the playoffs barely squeaking in or
knowing that you have some clear deficiencies that is going
to get you in trouble in the playoffs. Yeah, it's
like saying we're gonna go to Disney World. We get
(09:41):
in the car, we all packed up, and ain't no
gas man. You just you just let down some folks.
I just I don't know if I'm comfortable really enjoying.
I know the players would, but really does that set
it up for an opportunity for people to complain and
and say, you know, I hate this team and all
(10:02):
that stuff. So that's that's kind of where I'm you know,
they just stay into the victory Monday to day before
we start, before we start doing the Rose Parade now
down in Pasadena.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
All right, So I don't.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Want to put words in his mouth, but translation to me,
I like where they're headed. I like what they're doing,
but I'm afraid of a bad matchup and an ass
beating in the playoffs that could really leave in the
season with bad morale and leave people with the it's
our taste in their mouths, which I do understand, but
I also have no I want to see this team
make a playoff run.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
I want to see.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Listen, the Bucks are the best team in this division.
But if you can catch them and win the division,
go do that. Of course, go get a home playoff game. Nobody,
not even Smith, He's going to be, you know, hesitant
about that. I do get his point, though, right this
team is not perfect. They're still growing. You want them
to make the playoffs, but can you can you do
anything when you get there? Yeah, I understand the feeling
(10:55):
that he's conveying right there in the moment. So I'm
okay with them standing pat, letting this group grow together,
stacking another draft on top of it, and then continuing
to move forward. Seven h four numbers just said but
if you're going to preach, learn and grow together in
the system, then we can't be thinking about firing a
varo or changing the front office.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Well, I hope not. That's certainly not my mindset today.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
I mean, maybe you're talking to the more negative faction
of the listenership or the fan base, but that's certainly
not where my head's at today.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
I don't think anybody should.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
In fact, I think as Ziro Everro is back on
the very good side of this fan base just based
on the first nine games. How could he not be,
and especially after Sunday's performance against Green Bay. So I'm
not thinking along those lines. I'm also certainly not thinking
along the lines of what the Indianapolis Colts did today
in trading for Sauce Gardner like the Panthers. It's so
(11:43):
funny because look at where is Indianapolis an argument for
the Panthers being more aggressive? Because I don't think it is.
I saw somebody trying to make that case earlier.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
That way.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Look where both teams were at the end of last year.
Look what Indianapolis is doing right now. Why can't you know,
Carolina make that kind of aggressive move. Well, there's seven
and one, two, they're sorry, Yeah, sorry, seven and two.
Daniel Jones has been around a lot longer than Bryce Young.
Their roster I think overall is in a better place
than Carolina's his right und now.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
So a more veteran laden roster, like a lot of
those guys have still been overs from the Frank Reich days.
I mean, Quentin Nelson's still there, playing at the top
of his game. He's been there since twenty eighteen. The
whole defense, it feels like he has been there for a while.
Jonathan Taylor has been there for over five years, so yeah,
that makes a little bit more sense.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
Now. I love Sauce Gardner to death. Dang, that's a
very steep price.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
That's a very I mean first round fix and giving
away Donna Mitchell, who you know, there have been character
concerns with Donnie Mitchell, and then he made that stupid
mistake against the Rams.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Yeah, where he did the whole of Shawn Jackson fan did.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
But I who better hope it works out for you,
but hey, it could benefit to Carolina, you know why
if Sauce plays to week, which is going to be
pretty tough because they're overseas in Germany, he's playing against
the Falcons. And I do want to mention too, that's
the second time this year Carolina is going to be
playing a team coming back on the from the road
(13:14):
across the country to play a home game against Carolina,
because remember they played the Jets after they lost in
Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium, and now the Falcons will be flying
home from Germany to play against Carolina. Yeah, I just
find that very interesting to get Carolina got that break
twice in the schedule in the same.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
And I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
And first of all, Indianapolis also tops in their division
right now.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
I mean, look at Houston. They dropped to what three
and five, three and six, three and six and c. J.
Stroud got a concussion.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Jaz's terrible.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Jacksonville's pretty solid, but you know, they've got enough of
a gap over them right now, like a game and
a half, So it's basically their division to lose.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
And as you said, Tennessee's got awful oh.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
Off, They're just they're just hoping and praying to get
for the next month as quick as possible.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Well, what's interesting there is, first of all, they the
Jets right now in the middle of a fire sale
They dealt Quinn Williams to the Cowboys today too, but
Sauce Gardner traded to the Colts for two first round
picks in twenty six and twenty seven, New York also
receiving a Donna Mitchell as part of the trade. A
smoke mentioned there a second ago. So clearly Indianapolis is
(14:18):
going all in on a playoff run and hoping they
can do more than that even But on top of that,
doesn't that indicate clearly that they think Daniel Jones is
their quarterback of the future. Yeah, I mean that's the
clear indicate. That's the clear signal here, right, is that
they think Daniel Jones is their guy.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
Yeah, he only signed to a one year deal, so
they'd have to make a move on them. I don't think. So.
What I think is going to happen here with Daniel
Jones is we're going to see them sign him to
a deal similar to what breaking Baker Mayfield got after
the twenty twenty three season one, that where they give
him a lot more money, but they don't completely just
give him bookous of money and they have him out
in the contract just to make sure with themselves and
(14:54):
if he balls out, the next year like Baker Mayfield
did in twenty twenty four. Maybe they restructured that deal
add on another year or two to that. And you
have to remember, Daniel Jones is still young enough. He's
twenty seven years old, so you signed up to a
three year deal, you get him to his early thirties.
You're thinking that he's in the prime of this career
in athleticism has never never been to concern with Daniel Jones.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
No, no, no, there's no quick, no doubt about that.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
I got somebody, Freddie Freeman Choppers on the text line
telling me that Daniel Jones. He said, let's be honest
about it, Daniel Jones is way more talented than Bryce,
so we can't compare, not to mention bigger, stronger, and faster.
All right, listen, it's funny now that Daniel Jones is
being talked about this way as opposed to the way
Daniel Jones was talked about a year ago. But hey,
winning will do that. I mean, look at Sam Darnold.
(15:35):
He looks like the best quarterback in the NFL at
times throughout the course of the season. So we'll get
to see him coming up in a few weeks.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Too.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Narratives change quickly in the NFL. I will say, though, again,
if I was an Indianapolis Colts fan today, i'd be
excited about the commitment. Clearly you're stoked about seven and two,
but I don't think i'd love that trade. I mean,
I wouldn't love what we gave up to get Sauce Gardner.
That's a real two first round picks.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
For so start, it's seen two like, oh wow, that's
just man, that's a lot to give up, all right?
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Seven oh four five seven oh ninety six ten, We
are forty two minutes away from the NFL trade deadline
at four pm Eastern time. Your argument's four and against
the Panthers doing anything at all. I think we've we've
missed the window here if there ever was one. I
don't think Carolina is doing anything in the next forty
two minutes, but it's possible. Four PM is the deadline
for a reason. What move would you make, if any
(16:25):
at all? Seven oh four five seven oh ninety six ten,
keep it right here. Sports Radio ninety two to seven
wfn Z Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn ZKB
(16:48):
and smoke sitting around and creeping toward the four o'clock
NFL trade deadline. I don't believe the Panthers are doing
anything at all. That's possible still, and I've certainly been
wrong in the past, But when we get into that
final hour on trade deadline day, especially in the NFL,
but NBA two around here, and especially during the Mitch
Cup check era, you knew that nothing was probably gonna happen.
(17:10):
And I can't imagine that this ain't Scott Fitterer's Carolina Panthers.
I don't think Dan Morgan is going to be Listen.
I think Dan's willing to do deals, but if he
hasn't done one already, I don't expect one.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
He did two in the month span. Yeah, that gave
up picks. Did you hear that last sentence? That gave
up picks?
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (17:25):
Like, I'm not saying I'm a kids giving up picks,
but I'm just like, yeah, no, I'm not wanting to
I'm not wanting to give away assets right now for
a guy that's not going to make that much of
a difference. This isn't like baseball, where you can make
a deal to get a guy at the deadline that
makes a huge difference to potentially winning a championship or
even making a push to the next Like, if you're
making a deal, I feel like you'd also want to
(17:47):
make sure that guy's next year prime example, if you
make a deal that's considered bigger big, I feel like
the big move that you should make quote unquote is
similar to what the Reds did at the deadline this
year by trading for key Brian Hayes. So you got
a guy that's third base, that's a gold glove potential.
You just work on his back, but you're not gonna
get a guy like that in the NFL trade deadline.
That's what free agencies for.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
I love you.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
I love that you went with a cross sport comparison
right there to a random keep Brian Hayes reference. Well, yeah,
I like it. That part I appreciate. But also I
do want to talk about the World Series ratings coming
up here in just a bit, because why you're laughing,
what's funny about that?
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Well, no, you're gonna gloat rightfully so.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
And it also I think stands out even more because
one of the teams was not in America.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Of course I'm gonna glow. Am I gonna gloat or am.
I simply gonna say, I told you so. Are they
the same thing? Maybe they're the same thing.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Like I just laugh. I'll just do it like I laugh.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
In the faces of people who've been claiming that Baseball's dead.
Did baseball have some issues for a while, Yeah, baseball
had some issues, but they've seemingly fixed all of them.
And baseball just announced with authority that it reclaimed its
spot as the number two most popular sport in America
this past weekend. I'm not even sure it really ever
went anywhere, but those Game seven ratings, the average ratings,
the global ratings, I mean, basically near half the country
(19:03):
of Canada watched that game. Again, those twenty six million
that watched on average in Game seven thirty one and
a half million peak, those are just American numbers. That's
not the fifteen million Canadians that tuned in. That's not
the most watched MLB game in the history of Japan.
I mean, it was unbelievable. A game that the ratings
beat Dodgers Yankees last year like that. That's how crazy
(19:24):
that is too. So I'm you know, I'm just gonna
throw I'm gonna rub it in.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
I am a little bit.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
I'm gonna gloat because I've been fighting these people for years.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
Baseball is bor or baseball.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
You don't have to like baseball, that's fine, But baseball
is clearly the number two most popular sport in this
country behind football, and I don't even think it's up
for debate at this moment in time.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
It's just not.
Speaker 4 (19:42):
Wait wait wait wait, So they got higher ratings than
the Dodgers Yankee Series.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
So even though people say they hate the Dodgers and
they hate watching them, they hate watch them, and they
actually find dynasties very enticing.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
Dynasties are good for sports. Yeah, here's the worst thing
about it.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Ay, you losers in Daytona and Charlotte. You might I
want to think about that with your points system. Sorry, no,
it's fine. But like, dynasties are good for sports. Sports
needs bad guys, Sports needs villains, and I don't even
think the Dodgers are that.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Like, they're incredibly likable. I don't care what you say.
They're a likable group of dudes. Steared up watching that piece.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Of course.
Speaker 4 (20:13):
Ronaldy All made me cry during the World Series with
r J Pete. Yeah, which was awesome for those who
don't know. Rodney Pete's son who works with the Dodgers,
diagnosed falultism, said he wasn't going to be able to
function in the world. And he's been like one of
the head equipment managers for the Dodgers for like a decade. Now.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
Yeah, it's awesome, no doubt. Mauricio. I got a very
sarcastic text from him. He said sports is only about ratings,
not the game. Who said that it's the game that
made that many people watch. It was the quality of
the games that made that many people tune in. So
I recognize your attempt at starcasm, and I do acknowledge
that we oftentimes have too many conversations about ratings, or
(20:51):
at least I know we try not to have too
many about ratings. But like, sports is only about ratings,
not the game. The game is the reason the ratings
were so high. If the games were fantastic.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
You got shohe O Tani in the prime of his career,
coming off one of the best performances nol de Mankind
in the NLCS. Didn you Ceyoshi Nobu Yamamoto have what
he did in the World Series. Freddie Freeman has another
walk off home run in the World Series and one
of the longest games in MLB history in the World Series.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
And then you have.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
The Blue Jays team that has been talked about for
a couple of years in baseball circles.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Hey, when are they going to make that jump? When
are they going to make that jump? Well, this year
they finally made that jump.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Vladimir Guerrero Junior is the son of a legend, especially
at this point in Canadian icon, because his dad was
a legend for the Expos and the last great player
that played in Montreal. And then you have him, You're
he's trying to bring a World Series back to Canada.
You have a lot of veteran players on that team too,
Max Schuers are him starting in Game seven?
Speaker 3 (21:46):
One last ride for Max Scherzer.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
Potentially, you got Alejandro Kirk, You've got bobashett a big
name that's going to be entering free agent that's playing
for the Blue Jays. Can he submit his legacy and
make some more money in the World Series? That I mean,
we're just scratching the surface of the stories that were
told throughout this World Series. That's great storytelling.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Well it's funny too, because my guy, AJ is yelling
at me, mocking me and laughing me on the text line,
as if AJ hasn't been wrong about damn near everything
related to the Panthers here recently. He gives me an oh,
my bleeping god, KB, you are so shameless. Baseball is
nowhere close to being the number two sport in America
over basketball. People wanted to see o Tani and it's
an LA team in the World Series. That's a big
draw to Buddy. Only one team was American. He goes
(22:27):
on to say, this is a bit of an anomaly.
The sport as a whole is not ahead of the NBA.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
Get out here, Buddy, in America. It is.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
In fact, let me give you some numbers here. Recent
gallup polling showing baseball and basketball. We're in a near
tie behind the NFL, but actual viewership Baseball's audience footprint bigger.
Twenty nine percent of of a US adults reporting watching
Major League Baseball compared to twenty four percent reporting they
watch the NBA. Game seven viewership peaked at thirty one
(22:53):
and a half million viewers. Game seven of the NBA
Finals peaked at nineteen that's a twelve and a half
million difference. And you can say Indiana and Oklahoma City
not two big markets, and you'd be right. But in
baseball's case, it was only one American market. They don't
get credit for Canadian viewership. And it's still blew out
game seven. More kids are playing baseball age of six
to twelve than any other sport in America. You can
(23:13):
laugh all you want to, but I've been fighting knuckleheads
like you for years. This is still America. It's still
baseball's pastime and in the pitch clock and some of
the changes have completely vaulted this sport back into popularity
it hasn't seen in years. Ratings up, National broadcast Fox
up nine percent, ESPN up twenty one percent, TBS up
twenty nine percent. Attendance over seventy one million, baseball fans
(23:36):
going through the turnstiles, third straight year topping that mark.
I can keep going aj you mock, you laugh, but
you don't have any information to back it up, boss,
Like the numbers are out there, Baseball is having an incredible,
incredible run right now. Meanwhile, NBA fans are wondering at
the Draft lottery's legitimate. How the hell to Cooper flagging
up in Dallas. Why has Steve Bomber been getting away
(23:56):
with the money thing? Oh and by the way, thea
FBI just swept up a coach a player and they've
already banned one for life. So I love basketball too.
It's not about crapping on it, but I've gotten tired
over the years of hearing it, what Baseball's this and
Baseball's that. Look at the numbers. They don't back up
your narrative. They just don't.
Speaker 4 (24:11):
With that being said, Rob Manfred, get this CBA, nip
it in the bud, find a way to sign it.
Whatever you do, do not go into a lockout at
this point, because that's gonna be, unfortunately, gonna be one
of the main talking points for that next year. There's
much momentum as baseball's had over the last i'd say
three to four years.
Speaker 3 (24:31):
That sounds about right.
Speaker 4 (24:33):
If you get into a lockout in twenty twenty seven,
you basically undo all of what you just said.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
No, I'm with you like it's listen, nothing's perfect. They
still face headwinds like everybody else, fragmentation, RSNS, all that stuff.
We'll talk about this, by the way, with with shoey
Otani I've show you it, Tony good Lord j Yeah,
let's go Ovious coming up in about fifty minutes, so
we'll talk about all that. But yeah, we'll talk about
it with him and see what he's a big sports
media s or it's business guy, so we'll talk about that.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
But anyway, back to the trade deadline.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Panthers fans, there are a few people who don't really
get why any of us would believe that the Panthers
should stand pat or that it's okay for them to
stand pat. Like I've had a couple of people say, KB,
I don't get it. You know, why wouldn't we make
a run at this thing. Why wouldn't we do this?
Why wouldn't we, you know, try to make this team
better at the trade deadline? Tate from Wesley Chapel said,
(25:25):
we're built for that cold weather football to win a
game or two. So he thinks this team can get in,
get in and win a game in the playoffs. I mean, listen,
I'd like to think so too. I think Steve was
very hesitant yesterday to believe that, you know, this team's
flaws would be you know that this team's flaws might
hold them back and I think it's a matchup dependent.
(25:48):
I don't care though I want to playoff. I want
to playoff appearance so bad in Charlotte with the Panthers.
It doesn't matter to me if this team's flawed. But
if they decide to let this group do it together
without making any alterations at the trade deadline, I'm okay
with that. I am okay with that, but some people aren't.
Steve Carolina Cats saying, but what about the experience the
(26:08):
young guys would gain by having a playoff game. These
guys don't get primetime games. I agree with that. Pitch
and Swing says, we're the nine to seven Giants, perfect
that beat the perfect Patriots. One game scenario, anything can happen.
This city needs success. Period. We lose, we lose, but
I'd rather make it than not and get just about
as terrible of a draft pick. Keep pounding TCS saying,
I think the Carolinas would enjoy making it to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
I absolutely agree with that.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Backyard Legend says, I don't think we know for sure
if we have our franchise quarterback. I think that makes
it hard to make big time moves Right now, Wait
a minute, so you think is Bryce a deterrent to
making a big move in the mind. How many people
would agree with that smoke? Do you agree with that
that maybe not thinking that Bryce has proven it one
(26:54):
hundred percent yet should stop you from making a significant
move with the trade deadline.
Speaker 3 (26:57):
What do you say?
Speaker 4 (26:59):
I don't think you should make a move at the
deadline here at this point. Like, I get it, you
want to make the playoffs. Enough, I think playoffs is
the goal inside that building right now. But I also
think they've realize if you make a move trying to
get into the playoffs one year, you then kind of
get yourself in a quandary of a situation to where
hope you really either get a guy that's on a
(27:20):
deal that at the end of the deal for him
and it's a rental, and then you have him leave
for nothing and you're not making a deep run, and
that could halt your momentum that you have long term.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
I just think this is not the way to go
about it. Just right with what you got right now.
Speaker 4 (27:33):
See what you have if you make the playoffs, great,
And I'm of the belief do I think this team's
gonna win.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
A Super Bowl? No, I don't believe that.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
I'm ninety nine point nine percent sure at this point
this team's not gonna win a super Bowl. But I'm
also of the belief just try to get into the playoffs.
See what you have. If you don't make the playoffs,
with what you have right now, now you know what
to improve upon ind the off season clearly, and you
still have all your whereabouts within place when it comes
to draft picks, capital with the funds in the salary cap,
and I think a lot of it's going to open up.
(28:02):
You already have some decisions on your team that you're
gonna have to make for the next eight weeks. So
I'm going to believe, though, if you do make the playoffs,
write it out. See what you got, Let's see what
we have a chance. This is the year to go
all bombastically into a phone call saying, hey, we're gonna
make this deal, go all in because we saw it happen.
We saw what happen in twenty twenty one when Carolina
started three to zero and then all of a sudden,
(28:23):
Scott Fitterer got Haullum all high and mighty saying I'm
gonna trade Dan Arnold and a third round pick for CJ. Henderson,
and we thought, okay, well a former top ten pick,
I guess it can maybe work out here.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
No. CJ.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
Henderson was the butt of jokes within this fan base,
and then a couple weeks later he actually made a
smarter move for Stefan Gilmour. But at that point, you
already gave up two draft picks for cornerbacks and one
of them was only a rental.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
All right?
Speaker 2 (28:46):
Seven oh four five, seven oh ninety six ten. Hit
us up on the FanDuel text line. Your thoughts on
trade deadline Tuesday, twenty two minutes to go. I think
the door's closed, But that doesn't mean you can't make
your case. That doesn't mean that you know, for some
of you that you can't lament the fact that it
looks like Caroline is not going to do anything. You know,
I don't blame you. If you really wanted to move,
(29:06):
that's fine. I would be curious to know which move
you wanted, Like, did you want Rashid Rice? Did you
want to give up two first for Sauce Gardner?
Speaker 4 (29:13):
Sho?
Speaker 3 (29:14):
Should they have? You know? Gone?
Speaker 2 (29:15):
I'm not big sarcastic, I'm asking would you should they
have been in on Quinn Williams. I doubt it given
the way this d line's playing right now. I don't
think somebody said Max Crosby, I don't think that guy's
leaving Vegas.
Speaker 3 (29:24):
He just got resigned this past year.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
Yeah he did, But like overall, just I don't think
he's leaving Vegas. I don't think he wants to. I
think they want to keep him. So I don't think
that was ever on the table. What move did you want?
Seven oh four, five, seven ninety six ten hit us
up on the fan duel text line?
Speaker 3 (29:38):
Right now we go to smoke on the headlines. Who
is smoke? Where is smoke? Where there's smoke, there's fire.
Let's go two things first, we'll go on the local skill.
Here'll here to.
Speaker 4 (29:51):
Hornets announced yesterday that eleven more games will be broadcast
over the air for the rest of the year, starting
with tonight's game against the New Orleans You can watch
the game on Channel nine, Channel sixty four and all
for our friends in the South Carolina region d Palmetow
Sports Network. So you got that and in more in
a national news scale, this is very interesting. The Cowboys
(30:13):
make this trade for Quentin Williams less than twenty four
hours after losing to the Arizona Cardinals where they lost
twenty seven to seventeen and Kyle it looks like a
former Wilf Packer may have gotten the starting job in Arizona,
as Jacoby Brissette has been playing well told you in
relief for Kyler Murray, even into losses.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
And including last night's win.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
And Brob, what did I bring this up to you
two weeks ago when but Kyler still got hurt and
I think it was the Packers game. Yeah, I told
you that this is going to become a quarterback controversy.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Watch.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
I mean, he was already gaining some momentum out in
Arizona among some of the fans in media.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
They're so tired of Kyler out there.
Speaker 4 (30:47):
And Jacoby's a grown up. Yeah, he's a grown man.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
All right, Well, come back, Nick Carboni, fresh off of
paternity leave. My man's got a baby nowraternity paternity leave. Ah,
that doesn't I mean it's a boy. That just means
he's a boy. He's got a little girl. He's a daddy.
He's a girl dad. We got Nick Carboni coming up next.
Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ, heyvercruising on a Tuesday,
(31:31):
seven oh four, five seven ninety six, ten KB and
Smoke having a.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
Real good time. AJ is still hot.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
He's still I mean, he is sending me entire novels
right now trying to combat my point. Baseball's World Series
Game seven drew a peak of thirty one and a
half million viewers on Saturday night, an average of nearly
twenty seven million. That blows away Game seven of the
NBA Finals and even beats last year's Dodgers Yankee Series.
With the number one and number two media markets in
the country going ahead to head with more overall superstars
(31:59):
in last year's World Series, Baseball's ratings are up, you know,
mega percentages nationally across the networks, breaking attendance records across
the country for the third straight year.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
Two.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
Baseball's back in the silver metal spot. Baseball is back firmly.
I believe is the number two sport in America. It is,
of course America's pastime. We're a football country, there's no
doubt about that. But the American public has fallen in
love with baseball again in a way that we haven't
seen it in a while.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
Oh God, Oh no, you just.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
I was so excited to deliver that that thought again. Now,
what's happened? I'm terrified.
Speaker 4 (32:31):
Well, the only reason I did this is because I
know it's going to break your heart. The Carolina Panthers
have made a move. Oh no, it's not a trade.
They released Hendon Hooker.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Did they really? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (32:42):
Oh wow, I'm sorry, buddy. Oh no, look at the flowers.
Oh no, no, don't look at it. Oh that's thanks
for Hendon Hooker. But it also tells you why they
let Andy Dalton play with a broken thumb, and what
I signed Mike Way and why he was allowed to
be the backup quarterback with a broken thumb in Green
Bay on Sunday. All right, we got to get to this.
This next guest, he can weigh in on this. He's
been out for the last several weeks. He is one
(33:02):
of our favorite people in the Charlotte Press corps. He
is the sports director of sports anchor at NBC Charlotte
and a brand new dad. Everybody give it up for
the great Nick Carbondy, who's back on the show post
paternity leave.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
And it's good to have him back. Nick. How is fatherhood?
My man? It's good to have you.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
Well, let's just say, knowing that I had to do
something on Tuesday at three forty five made me keep
track of what time and what day it was for
the first time in about a month. So grab me back,
ready to jump aboard the Panthers fun train. I will
defend myself. They did win thirty to nothing in my
last game covered, so this is not a MEILMX situation.
(33:41):
Oh yeah, but yeah, and listen, they should win this
Sunday too. I know we'll talk.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
About it all right.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
So you have been in that fatherhood vortex the last
several weeks where you don't know what time it is,
you don't know how much sleep you've gotten in the
last week alone. How's mama doing? I mean, have you
figured out the diaper situation yet? Like, have you settled
into being a dad?
Speaker 4 (33:59):
Buddy?
Speaker 6 (33:59):
I just did a speed and two consecutive diapers within
the last twenty five minutes. Let's go, and didn't even
sweat this call. Mom's doing great. She's taken care of
baby as usual right now so that I can get
this call done. And got a vote today too, So
getting out and about in the world. It's kind of nice.
Speaker 3 (34:18):
Buddy, that's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
Well, our congratulations to you in the entire Carbony clan.
But what did you think about the Panthers going into
the hollowed grounds of Green Bay, Wisconsin and coming out
with a win on Sunday?
Speaker 6 (34:30):
That was an incredible win. And unless you're like the
Chiefs or the Eagles or some dynastic team, you don't
worry about what it looks like or what the score
is or what the quarterback's stat line was. This was
a game that you know, the Panthers even last year
when they were in some of those big games against
some of those big name teams, you know, would come
(34:51):
up just short. So to have them go into Lambeau,
to have them make the wise decision before the game
that Greg Olsen and everybody you know by now has
kind of talked about to uh take the ball and
then get the direction in the uh in the second half,
uh and and nail the game winner into the win.
Well with the win with a rookie kicker. By the
way the defense is playing, the way the run game is,
(35:13):
you know, they've obviously figured out like listen, let's just
ride the hot hand and Rico daddle right now Bryce
Young again, not gaudy numbers, but once again you trust
this guy in late game situations as as much as
everything else about you know, his career so far, Uh
has has you know made us fit sit here and
(35:33):
go okay, we got to wait and see in those
situations he plays really well and he did yet again
he made the plays he needed to make.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (35:41):
He obviously made that brilliant uh you know identification of
the Mike linebacker that threw off the Packers and and
allowed a really good run to set up the field goals.
So yeah, I'm really excited about what the back half
of the season holds.
Speaker 5 (35:55):
They should win this week.
Speaker 6 (35:56):
Let's see how they handled not being the underdog. But
you know, you very much, very much should be looking
at six and four as they head into to Atlanta
next week.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Yeah, I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
So then, I mean, nine minutes to go until the
NFL trade deadline. I entered the show at three o'clock
today saying, every time we get to within the final
hour and they've done nothing, it means they're doing nothing.
And outside of letting Hndon Hooker go, it appears that's
what's going to be the case.
Speaker 3 (36:18):
Do you have any issue with that.
Speaker 6 (36:20):
Not surprised at all. You know, listen, like a guy
like Jalen Phillips for instance, which you know a lot
of people thought, hey, maybe they could use him, although
the linebackers have been playing a lot better and the
safey has been playing a lot better. Like you're not
the Eagles. You're not trying to just stack pieces because
you're thinking you're going to win the Super Bowl this year.
This is a team that thinks that can compete for
this division this year. They've got two big games against
(36:42):
the Bucks later this season. Crazier things have happened. They're
good enough, with enough breaks along the way to compete
for that spot at the end of November and in December.
And you don't want to mortgage your future. You don't
want to give away any young pieces that you've been
developing and done a good job draft thing and developing
for once the last few years, everybody talks about the
(37:03):
redundancy because Rico Dawdle has had an incredible month or so, well,
you're gonna need Chewba Hubbard again at some point, and
Dawdle's only on a one year deal, So I didn't
think it would have been wise to move Cuba, even
though he's kind of fallen into the background a little
bit here these last couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (37:20):
So not surprised.
Speaker 6 (37:21):
I mean, the NFL trade deadline has become really really relevant,
kind of like the Baseball trade deadline, so I always
equate it to that, and I kind of look at
the Red Sox this year my team, of course, where
you're kind of in that tweener mode like, sure we
could make we can make the playoffs, and that would
be important for our franchise's development. But we don't need
to sell off, you know, we don't need to abandon
(37:42):
any assets along the way.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
Nick Carboni, NBC Charlotte back with us for his regular
Tuesday appointment. Let's talk about the Hornets really quickly. They
are three and four. They've got the Oho and six
Pelicans tonight down in New Orleans at this Movie King Center.
Really good chance to get to four and four and
that would be fantastic. But also no LaMelo Ball, the
last to go, LaMelo Bone, last game. He won't play tonight.
Brandon Miller's been out since night two. What are your
(38:05):
thoughts on where they are?
Speaker 6 (38:07):
I'm really concerned about LaMelo. To have him out two
straight games with an ankle related you know, I know
they're calling it impingement, but obviously that's been the bugaboo
for him. His really now is the bulk of his career.
I know that they won easily without him against Utah.
I know they could win easily without him tonight against
New Orleans. But to me, like, this is a guy
(38:29):
that's got to play sixty five seventy seventy five games,
so to be out back to back nights with something
ankle related this early in the season really concerns me.
Again with Brandon Miller also was really excited to see
the jump he could make this year, and could still
make this year, but a rough start and given the
(38:49):
old reevaluated in two weeks, so we know that can
go kind of in perpetuity with some of these guys.
I don't know that that's going to be the case
with this, but not something you want to see. On
the flip side, they did a really nice job with
the roster building the offseason. Colin Sexton has been a
fantastic addition, whether he's coming off the bench or playing
with the regulars. Ton K Nipple, I mean they hit
on him, and he keeps hitting. He's been unbelievable to
(39:11):
have a Charlotte Hornet make NBA history night after night
with the amount of threes he's made to start his
career as fantastic. And Sion James has been great. I mean, PAULK. Brenner,
I still think McNeely can contribute at some point this
season too. So love what they did in the offseason
with the draft. They should beat teams like Utah, which
they did. They should beat teams like New Orleans, which
(39:31):
they should. Tonight with al LaMelo ball.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
What was your Because you've been gone the last couple
of weeks, you weren't around for these conversations anyway, for
the opening of the season, and you know, the big
picture discussions about what people thought they could do and
what they could be. I think the official preseason over
under win total was twenty six and a half if
memory serves. What are your thoughts on, you know where,
how many wins you think this team could get if
(39:54):
they largely stay healthy together.
Speaker 6 (39:56):
Yeah, and that last part is important, obviously, but that's
why you're asking. I think i'd take the over on that.
I mean, I think they should absolutely be over that
with you. Some of the talent I mentioned Sexton coming in,
Brandon Miller taking the next step, LaMelo ball when he
is on the floor, he's been brilliant for the most part.
And then the addition of Konk Nipple, who's clearly ready
to play here, Ryan Kulkbrenner, who on certain nights and
(40:19):
in certain matchups can absolutely play on both ends of
the floor. So I think you'd take the over on
that all day. I'm still excited about what the season holds,
don't get me wrong, but to see LaMelo out two
nights in a row with an off night, I believe, Yeah,
an off night again. I don't know a day it
is Kyle, but to see him out two two times
in a row then ankle.
Speaker 3 (40:39):
Anything is concerning Charlotte FC.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Big Game three coming up on Friday. They forced Game
three this past weekend. Listen, Christian Kalina was a hero.
This city, I know is buzzing about this team a
chance to advance. They've already had to play once without
Wilford Zahab, but they got him back. What are your
thoughts on their chances of advancing on Friday?
Speaker 6 (40:59):
Yeah, and shout out to my partner over at w
C and C, Danielle Stein. She does a remarkable job
covering Charlotte See especially through this run, and she'll continue
that this week.
Speaker 3 (41:07):
Listen.
Speaker 6 (41:08):
It could have got it could have gotten really ugly
if they lost that game in the Bronx on Saturday,
because of the way they played in the previous game
and that that you know, with everything involving Zaha prior
to that, but now you know, you've got to give
them the advantage. Being back at the Bank on a
Friday night should be an incredible night. I think the
weather is going to beautiful, and we saw what that
(41:29):
looked like last year against Orlando in that game too.
But now it's for a trip to the Eastern Conference semifinals,
which is an incredible This franchise has just gotten better
and better and made more progress every single year, so
I expect that they'll go out and they'll be a
kind of complete product when it comes to finishing. I'd
love to see Toklamadi get active again and obviously Zaha
(41:52):
and and and find a way to get it done,
because you know that that's that's the next step for
this franchise. Now that they've clinched the top four seed
home field advantage in that round one to now advance.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
Buddy, It's great to hear your voice. Glad you're doing well.
Send our best to the baby to mama. We'll talk
to you next Tuesday.
Speaker 6 (42:09):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (42:09):
KB, There you go.
Speaker 2 (42:10):
