Live Platform Sports and South End Sports Radio ninety two
to seven double ufn Z. Good to be back on
a what is it? Boys and girls? A football Friday?
The Carolina Panthers play football on Sunday, and of course
on a football Friday. I want your thoughts about it?
Seven oh four, five to seven oh ninety six ten.
Hit us up on the FanDuel text line. Anything you got, obviously,

(00:45):
I want that. Your Monday headlines today, you know the
tradition on a Friday during the football season. Monday headlines today?
What does the front page of the Charlotte Observer look like?
What's the headline to Mike Kay's column in his game story?
As we're talking about things on Monday, shout out to
Mike k by the way, hope he's out there listening.
What is Joe Person's headline in the Athletic? What's Vashti

(01:08):
Hurts headline over Carolina Blitz?

Speaker 3 (01:10):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:10):
And of course not to bury our own lead. What
are we talking about first thing Monday morning here on
wfn Z Monday Headlines today Panthers and Jaguars Edition Sunday
one o'clock kickoff down in the stinkiest city in America.
And yes, I am still holding that grudge from those
golf podcasters back in the spring besmirching the great name

(01:31):
of Charlotte, North Carolina. So it's all things Jacksonville hate
here on this first football Friday with Panthers football on
the horizon. I just got wings delivered here at Platform
and I love this place and I think y'all do too.
One of our best sponsors, one of our best partners
here at WFNZ. It is a true Vegas style sports
bar here in South End, and there is an incredible

(01:54):
view of the city from their outdoor third story balcony
and Patty my guy Rocks walking by. What are we
looking at? Five thousand square feet out there? With what
fifty five hundred square feet outside? My Guy Rock, give
me all the specs that I need. Platform Sports is
the place to be. I'm staring at a wall that

(02:15):
is approximately fifty feet long at about twelve feet tall,
and we've got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight nine, ten screens right now, ten individual square screens
on this wall with soccer, tennis, baseball, golf. Last night's
replay of the Eagles and Cowboys absolute craziness. So this

(02:36):
is the place to be on a Friday, seven oh four, five,
seven oh ninety six, ten.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Hit us up.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
I want to hear from you Monday headlines today. I'm
at Platform Sports. Smoke is back in the Chandler Volta
WFNZ studios.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
One call.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
That's all the Carolinas personal injury lawyers. Go to Cvinjurylaw
dot com. That's Cvinjurylaw dot Com. I am told that
we're gonna have some real Panther's legends in the house today.
I hear my guy Trey Boston is gonna make an
appearance here this afternoon. I'm told Charles Johnson is gonna
make an appearance here this afternoon. We'll get you the
full list, but if you want to come out and

(03:11):
hang with some former Carolina Panthers, a bushel of them
are on the way right now. And speaking of the
Carolina Panthers, here at Platform, they are giving away a
pair of tickets to see the Panthers play coming up
later this evening.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Specifically tickets to see the.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Panthers battle the Miami Dolphins coming up on October fifth
at Bank of America Stadium. Again, I'll get you the
details on how you can win those tickets, but you're
gonna have to get over here to platform if you'd
like to win a pair of tickets to Panthers and
Dolphins October fifth, and, by my count, Smoke, that is
week five of the Carolina Panthers season. So we got

(03:49):
a ton going on. Chip Patterson coming up in forty minutes,
assuming he's not live on television, A lot to talk about, Smoke, Ludwig,
Howard you, sir, how are you feeling today?

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Man?

Speaker 4 (03:59):
It's been months months of waiting, but after last night,
we are officially in football season, both for college football
and the NFL, and we don't have to wait much
longer for the Carolina Panthers. After months of pontificating, hypothesizing,
we're finally here.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Oh yeah, no, we're here. Also, real quick, let me
add a name to the list. My guy Rock also
reminded me KK Short is apparently on his way over
to hang out this afternoon. So we are kicking off
the Panthers season in style. At platform sports, which has
become and I'm not only I'm not just saying this
because they're having us out today and they're great friends
of ours and a great advertiser, but if you follow

(04:34):
them on social media you can see the proof. This
is one of the hottest places to hang out anywhere
in Charlotte right now, especially in the South End area.
They've had folks out here for all sorts of major
sporting events. But Rock just told me smoke they have
been sold out five nights a week for these Love
Island watch parties. What yes, the Love Island show, the

(04:56):
reality show on Peacock. My guy Rock was just breaking
it down for me, and there's proof of this on
social media. This place has been packed to the gills,
he said, five nights a week during Love Island and
I guess this was a little while back, but they
just had a reunion celebration, a reunion show, I think
it was last week, and he said they packed the
place out again for that too. So not only has

(05:17):
it become one of the premier destinations to watch live
sports here in Charlotte, apparently this is where the Love
Island watch parties in the Queen City take place as well.
I'm not kidding you, smoke. It's a real thing. Okay,
So I've heard of Love Island. How is it different
from like Love is Brother? I have no idea. I
couldn't tell you, you know me, I don't. The only
one I watched was what's the one that we all
watched and talk about?

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Love is Blind?

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Because it was it was a Charlotte season, right, that
was like what two years ago, three years ago, something
like that. That's the only kind of show like that
that I've watched any time recently, So I don't know.
I'm sure there are folks out there who watch it,
watch it with their significant other. I just don't happen
to be one of them. So I'm sure they've got
some thoughts on that. But apparently this has become the
destination for those watch shows as well.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
I'm not shocked by it.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
It's a great place, great people, beautiful people, great food.
My wings just arrived and again a fifty five hundred
square foot patio on the third floor overlooking the city.
You can see the skyline. It's got a great view.
They've got TVs everywhere. Not that you'll need the heat
lamps tonight because it's suddenly gotten a little bit warmer
outside here in Charlotte. But they've got every amenity outside.

(06:22):
They got couches, they got massive tables. I mean, it's
about the coolest spot as you will find to hang out.
So anyway, we got a lot to do, a lot
to talk about. Seven o four five, seven ninety six
ten hit us up on the FanDuel text line. Couch
coach Kyle said that was last year, KB Lol. Then
he called me old ass? What wait, Love Island was
last year? Was that right?

Speaker 3 (06:43):
This straw? Okay? So there's no way that was it
right that this Charlotte episode?

Speaker 5 (06:47):
Was it?

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Okay? Actually that was that right? That that might be
the case. It might have been springing. Okay, So is
he calling me old because I forgot him? Forgetful? Is
that what he's saying? I guess, Well you forgot how
long it's been? I guess, and you thought it was
a lot longer. Pretty sure it was about two years ago.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
I mean, to be fair to you, it was recorded
in twenty twenty three. So okay, I guess he's.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Technically right if you want to get you know, if
you want to get technical on it. But I mean
no seasons sometimes, Like it's weird when I see stuff
like the Voice for example, like they say, oh, we're
on season thirty five. I'm like, how Yeah, especially been
around for like fifteen years, and I was like, well,
we have a season here, Season Air. I think earlier
this week's same thing with Dancing with the Stars. I'm like,

(07:29):
how many seasons have they had? How's this possible? It's like, oh,
they have like two or three a year.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
I like that. That's cheating. No, that's not a season,
it's a year, all right.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Well, Texters. Texter's already blown us up. To start the show.
Monday Headlines today Panthers Jags. What's the headline on Monday?
Brian says, the hunter becomes the hunted and then it
gives me a caption underneath it. Despite a decent showing
by Travis Hunter on offense, he struggles mightily on defense,
including giving up the go ahead touchdown to Hunt a

(07:57):
renfro to give the Panthers the twenty seven four win
in Week one. My man Brian coming through with the
specifics on his Monday headline today, Let's see Mike the Wolfman.
Panthers d shows up against the Jags look like a
top ten defense.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
I mean, listen, smoke.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
I don't think anybody here is gonna be picky in
how a win arrives if in fact, they deliver a
win on Sunday. But boy, wouldn't it be nice to
see the Panthers get a win on Sunday and maybe,
just maybe the defense plays really well in the process.
How much better would that make everybody feel about this
football team.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
I think it definitely would cool off some of the concerns.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
I honestly think, even though I believe if you were
asked me right now, I think Jacksonville wins in a
close game against Carolina, I do think we've gone so
much on the pendulum to being so optimistic to so
negative due to the injuries into trades, that I think
maybe the fan base has kind of gotten too negative
and realized Aightes team actually is going to play better
than what some people are expecting on Sunday, even if

(08:55):
it's in a loss.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, I mean, listen, I'm not negative. I think that
the people who are suddenly concerned about this team's, you know,
perceived positions of strength offensive line and wide receiver, those
being a bit more of a question mark. Now, I
don't think that's an unfair criticism. I still think that
you can feel mostly comfortable with the offensive line on
Sunday even if ike He doesn't play. And earlier today,

(09:19):
Ikey was listed as doubtful on the injury report, so
I think we all kind of expect that, and it
may be smoke. I mean, maybe I haven't seen exactly
everything that Dave Canal has said today in case I
missed something, but I guess it's possible that you know,
he's out there with shoulder pads as an emergency type
of option, but you know he doesn't end up playing
on Sunday. Do you expect him to even dress out

(09:39):
at this point, because I'm not sure I do. I
don't know, probably not, Yeah, probably not.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
I'm doubtful, like doubtful essentially means yet it's probably not
gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
You know.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
I don't think I saw anything in regards to that,
but I think the emergency option is gonna be Brady
Christensen essentially for sure enough tackle. So I'm not really
getting all bent out of shape or anything, and any
hopes it just the whole entire practice for him this
week was about him just getting ready I believe for
next week against Arizona de se If he's going to

(10:09):
be ready for that, they say day to day.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
But I think that's a little.

Speaker 4 (10:12):
Bit of gainsmanship just to say Hater's still a chance
to the people down in Jacksonville that he could play.
And that's why I think he's listed as doubtful, just
so they could have that small chance creep into the Jaguars.
But I I think everyone's calling their bluff right now.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Okay, all right, Monday headlines today seven four five, seven
ninety six ten. What are you expecting from Carolina? And
what are we talking about on Monday? HJ says Bryce Young,
silence his doubters. Panthers ground Jaguars with balanced attack.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
I like it. I like it.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Scooter and Huntersville Monday headline Panthers offensive line dominates producing
four hundred and fifty yards of offense on the ground
and in the air. Rather lengthy headline. But God, I
hope you're you're right about that. I really really do.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Now.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Jack of course, has to come in with a shot
of cold water over all of all of us, it
says Bryce starts It's year three with an interception on
the first play.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Can you imagine?

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Like I'd rather not, and I don't really want to
spend a lot of time imagining, but I can still
vividly remember exactly where I was on the road last
year on ramp on to four eighty five.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Smoke.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Just you know, as soon as I'm hitting the interstate
and I hear the call that Bryce is thrown a
pick on his first pass play of the game. So
I look, the odds are extraordinarily low that happens again.
But I just don't think my heart can take it.
So Bryce, please don't do that. Please don't do that,
mister positivity. Douvall goes down. Now that's a headline that

(11:37):
I'm not sure it's going to be the preferred headline,
but that's what I'm talking about.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Du Vall goes down.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Chad from Greenville, same same spin on the creativity says
the crawl through Duvall Panthers edge out the Jags to
win season opener. The crawl through Duvall all right, not bad,
not bad. I like that a lot. Keep them coming.
Seven oh four, five, seven ninety six to ten. Hit
us up, brown Mamba, says Tepper. Reverse his course, and

(12:03):
pours water on his white T shirt after a Panther's
victory smoke. What have we learned about the relocation of
the visiting owner's box at Jacksonville that came.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
Out earlier today? Yeah, I guess that was a report
from Joe person. Apparently he got from the team team spokeswoman.
Of course, the last time Carolina was in Jacksonville was
when David Tepper fruit to drink at that fan and
Carolina got shut out for the first time since two
thousand and two. Per the team spokeswoman to Jacks had
moved the visiting Owner's box to the opposite side of

(12:34):
the stadium and up a level out of close proximity
to fans. Joe did clarify in the tweet after that
that the change was not in response to the twenty
twenty three incident, but a result of STAD construction projects.
Current site is where visiting owners used to sit, so
remember because there. I believe after this years we're going

(12:54):
to start renovations right for the stadium, So I mean,
it kind of makes sense, but it's also a coincidence,
and I bet if that wasn't the case, maybe for
temper they would have changed things or would have changed
things for owners moving forward. Anyways, Well, yeah, there you go,
Jack said allegedly threw his drink.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
He said, he spilled it. Yeah, we'll go with that.
That's fine, walk him down. Headline says Panthers lose in
an icky way. Oh I hate you for that. I
really hate that. I hate everything about that headline. Six
oh nine number Monday headline and excel win Lee gets
scores twice, including the game winner. Now that's a headline
right there. Excel win and excel win Lee get scores twice,

(13:35):
including a game winner. Of all of all the ways
that the game could go on Sunday, and again, all
that matters is a win. You know, there are ways
in which the Panthers could win this game that would
make people feel, let's say, a lot better and might
still leave them, of course, feeling some kind of you
know way about the Carolina Panthers, because Jacksonville was of
course not great last year either, finishing four and thirteen.

(13:57):
Their defense was nearly as bad as Carolina. So you know,
you beat Jacksonville. I think there are some people that
will give this Carolina team credit for winning on the road,
something they obviously have not been able to do very
often the last several years. So you get credit for
a road win, but what does it look like? You know,
do you play well defensively? Does the offense look to
show some continuity coming off the way they finished last

(14:20):
year down the stretch? Or is it ugly? Do they
need a special teams player two? You know, is there
a flute kind of play that decides the game? You
know what I'm talking about. So the way in which
you win will obviously impact the discussions, impact the narratives.
But I like that one because if if they win
and it's because Xcel has a big day, well, you
hope that can be the start of quieting some of
the concerns about not only one of the most popular

(14:42):
players on the roster, but one of those guys who've
been much maligned by a good portion of the fan
base even the media. Even if he's got a big personality,
he wasn't consistent down the stretch. He's been involved in
lots and lots of non football stuff here this offseason
that's led to people, of course questioning his focus, commitment
to the Panthers and to his craft and things.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
Of that nature.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
So that would be big if XL went out and
had a dominant Sunday at the wide receiver position, more
of these coming in real tar Heel says, young guns
blast the Jaguars. I like to see that Seth from Kannapolis.
Renfro revives career at Cardiac Cats. All right, I think
that one we could probably workshop a little bit. But
if Hunter Renfro were to come out and play an

(15:24):
immediate massive role in winning a road game to start
one to oh, yes, that would be a massive headline
that we would all be We'd all lap it up
on Monday. Let's see, Oh, Hurricane Mark, Liam is taken
for a loss?

Speaker 3 (15:37):
You get his smoke? Liam taken for a yea, let's
go of.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Course, if you don't get it, the movie Taken and Liam,
what's his face?

Speaker 3 (15:45):
Smoke? What's his last name? Thank you? Liam Neeson. That's good,
Hurricane Mark. I like that one. Got one for you?
What you got? You know?

Speaker 4 (15:51):
It's because I'm predicting Jacksonville to win JAG's Edge out Carolina.
Josh heines Allen with a massive performance into Jay season
opening one.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Smuck. I mean it's clever. There's no way that feels
good though. That's Oh, it doesn't. I know, I know.
I just feel like, on the one hand, you can
feel good about your creativity, it's clever, but there's no
you can't possibly like saying that out loud.

Speaker 3 (16:15):
No, I don't.

Speaker 4 (16:15):
But I also feel like in some ways that a
lot of people are gonna have to eat their humble
pie this weekend without Ikey, because a lot of people
have been, you know, trashing Ikey for over the years,
thinking he's not an elite left out and he may
not be the best of the best, but you can
do a whole hell of a lot worse than Ikey Ikwanu.
And I'm afraid with joshneigem been likely starting Ikey strains
will be shown.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
I mean it was interesting as I did that Jacksonville
interview yesterday, the Home at Home with Rick Blue, there's
very much a perception down there and elsewhere that, you know,
Ikey is a much maligned player, and I don't know
if that's the right way to put it. He had
a really disappointing year too. But for anybody who paid
attention last year, you know, outside of I think maybe
two or three afternoons where he was below average, let's

(16:59):
say the rest of his season was more than solid.
I mean, he had some really good Sunday afternoons last year.
So year three he was much improved. I wouldn't say ike,
he's much maligned, you know. I still think there are
some questions about him long term among some fans and
probably a little bit the organization too. But he has
bounced back and I think continues to get better. So yeah,
they're gonna miss him. I'd like to think they're gonna

(17:19):
try to run the ball early and often to get
Yosh Niman, you know, completely comfortable out there. He can't
help you in that way, but that is icky strength.
He is a road grading, run behind me, run blocking
left tackle, and there's certainly you're gonna miss that anytime
he's off the field. So again, Monday Headlines today seven
oh four, five, seven ninety six ten Panthers are Jags

(17:40):
on Sunday. Want your headlines. We're live from Platform Sports
in South End. We got Panthers stopping by KK short
Trey Boston. I believe Charles Johnson will make an appearance
as well. We're giving away Panthers tickets, they are They're
giving away Panthers tickets here at platform as well to
see Panthers and Dolphins in week five, lots more to
get to Sports Radio ninety two to seven live from

(18:17):
platforms Sports in South End. We are still in South End,
right if we crossed the line into Loso, because I
know that's that's a thing that I don't I know,
I'll get the side eye from some people by even
flirting with the term Loso because they hate it, especially
the o G Charlotteans. But I'm gonna call it. I'm
just gonna stick with South End. If you know what
Loso is good for you. If you hate it, I'm sorry,

(18:37):
but it's a thing that people say, tell me, yeah, well,
you know what though, I gotta save our guy. Brad
Panovitch has often participated in the Loso branding of this
area of town too.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
I love Brad.

Speaker 2 (18:48):
I'm just pointing out that Brad's anything but a gen
z or so there. I mean, Brad's an institution, so
he can get away with it. That's correct, exactly, He's
an institution. So, uh, that's where we are, just down
South Boulevard if you know, kind of the end of
the rail trail where the cat station is. It's a
heck of a spot, third story Vegas style sports bar,
fifty five hundred foot patio with outdoor seating and couches

(19:09):
and numerous televisions and just an incredible setup to get
out here and watch the game. Tonight, We've got Case
and the Chargers in Brazil. Last night, of course, we
had Philadelphia holding off Dallas in an absolutely bizarre game
that featured a sixty five minute rain delay in the
third quarter, incredible offense in the first half next to
non existent in the second half. We had Dak Prescott

(19:29):
and Jalen Carter spitting on each other. Jalen Hurts was
phenomenal in that game last night. And of course Philly
fans last night got to hang another banner and we
played the Now my favorite Phillies fan or Philadelphia sports
fan of all time, mister Ferdiebirds himself smoke. Was there
any update on furd Birds?

Speaker 3 (19:45):
What was it?

Speaker 6 (19:46):
No?

Speaker 2 (19:46):
Nat Madsen was his name yesterday? Did anybody follow up
with him?

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Actually?

Speaker 4 (19:50):
Yeah, apparently that new Barstools show on FS one actually
had him on for an interview this morning.

Speaker 5 (19:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (19:56):
I didn't see the interview, but I saw a screenshot.
I think it was you marshand I think tweeted out
a photo.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Okay, all right, well now listen, speaking of Philadelphia, the
phone lines are open seven oh four five, seven ninety
six ten. I do want your Monday headlines today, Panthers
and Jags edition, So hit me with those seven o
four five seven ninety six ten. What are we talking
about on Monday? After Panthers and Jags? But speaking of
Philly and Dallas last night, I am told that Philly
Nate is back on the phone lines, and being that

(20:24):
it is a football Friday and they did win last night,
I am inclined to take his phone call. However, I'm
proceeding with caution, Philly Nate. Congrats on the dub last night. Man,
what's on your mind?

Speaker 5 (20:34):
And I appreciate you opening up the combo? So nice,
so friendly, so humble. Let's try not to dump me
so quick. I've got a bunch of great information. Listen.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
All I ask is listen. All I ask is no
FCC violations. That's all I ask.

Speaker 5 (20:50):
Fair enough, I'm okay with that, But let's just start
with one thing really quick. One quick fact.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
Dak is a scumbag.

Speaker 5 (20:59):
I do not doing what Jalen Carter did, and let's
be real, gentlemen, in two years he's going to be
the highest paid non quarterback player.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
That boy's getting a bag.

Speaker 5 (21:10):
And if he didn't do the drag racing terrible mistakes,
he probably would have been a top three pick. That's okay,
Howie the magician Roseman got him at eleven. But with
all that said, the way Dak spit in his direction,
you can't disrespect the Super Bowl champs like that on
banner days. Now, well, hold on, now, what Carter did

(21:31):
summerd a bag of bricks. But these people that are
saying Dack didn't do nothing are just those scumbag Cowboys fans.
But last night I had just another light bulb go off.
As they're putting all these stats up, Jalen hurts. You know,
twenty four million dollar cap hit, Eagle's youngest defense in

(21:51):
the league. We lose arguably the best defensive linemen in football. Yeah,
and we still and we still beat the Cowboys four.
I mean, if that's not putting the NFL on notice
week one.

Speaker 1 (22:04):
What is.

Speaker 2 (22:07):
All?

Speaker 3 (22:07):
Right?

Speaker 2 (22:07):
So you're so basically you're you're talking up another Lombardi
Trophy in twenty twenty five huh.

Speaker 5 (22:13):
I mean, you tell me who's gonna threaten that Eagles
team with that offense, that offensive line.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
Stay Kwon Barkley.

Speaker 5 (22:19):
I mean every Giants span every time they turn on
and watch the Eagles. I mean, you just lost stay
Kwon vot to the number one player by his Peers
Offensive Player of the Year, biggest contract in running back hit.

Speaker 3 (22:31):
All right, the guy.

Speaker 5 (22:32):
Had sixty yards rushing and we still won.

Speaker 3 (22:35):
All right?

Speaker 2 (22:35):
So you really okay, Nate, this was great Drake catching up.
I'm glad you got to win last night. Go ahead
and do it, spokes ceremonially. Now we blow him off
the ear. I mean, I don't know, man like Dak spit.
I didn't think he was spitting at Jalen Carter, but
he certainly spit in his direction. He said that Jalen
Carter called him out. Dak said, he said, what the
bleep would I do that for? Carter spits back at him.

(22:56):
It's ugly. Carter's gonna get suspended. They have to do
something about it. I don't think anything's happening to Dak
Prescott quite frankly, smoke. What do you think the league does,
if anything, about that situation?

Speaker 3 (23:05):
Last night. I definitely think.

Speaker 4 (23:07):
There is a chance Janling Carter gets suspended, but if anything,
it would be at the very most it would be
two games. I think it's gonna be just one if
he does get suspended. Yeah, I think he will. No
matter what, he's going to get a hefty fine. I
wouldn't be shocked just to even if it wasn't the
intention of Dak, because let's face it, everyone on a
football field spits. It's like a common occurrence. It's like
saying hello or saying God bless you down here in

(23:29):
the South. But I think they would give a small
monetary fine to Dak Prescott just to kind of a
we did something to him to Yeah, you know, I
know he didn't mean it, but it just be careful,
be careful where you spit. Very little galvanizes the text
line and this listening audience like their hate for Philly Nate, I.

Speaker 3 (23:48):
Just want to throw that out there. I will say too, Kyle.

Speaker 4 (23:53):
This was the most talked about spitting incident on NBC
since Keith Fernandez spit at both Kramer and new back
in the eighties.

Speaker 3 (24:01):
Okay, let's go back to the phone lines.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
I've told it Fizzle is waiting online too to talk
about the Carolina Panthers. Let's break it back to a
more local discussion here, Fizzle, what's going on, brother Howard?

Speaker 6 (24:10):
Thanks?

Speaker 2 (24:11):
Thanks, are good?

Speaker 3 (24:12):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 7 (24:13):
Hey, I got a Monday headline.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
For it, Kyle, let's do it.

Speaker 7 (24:16):
Perpetual poverty. Panthers drop other season opener in Jacksonville. The
team is the team. Tell me there's not one special
player on this roster, not one, not a single one,
not a single special player, no class player. There's not one.
And and you got rid of your best receiver option.
This team has gotten worse, is taking a step back.

(24:38):
The defense is terrible. I wish I could be positive.
I want to be positive. Six and a half is
the win total that Vegas has right now. Hammer the
under This team is woeful. It's gonna be another really
long season. You probably have a new coach starting to
say this year's same time next year.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
Damn, Fizzle, Now that's gonna fight.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
You started up. Congratulations. I appreciate the phone call. All right,
does anybody do you agree with that that there's not
a single special player on this roster?

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Not one.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
There's one that's coming back. Okay Brown, I thought that's
what you'd say.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
Yeah, I mean Derek Brown, look, look and the whole
Adam Field the best receiver. I think people are mixing
up best receiver to most reliable receiver. And I'll put
it to you like this, Xavier leg Get. You know
how many drops he had last year, Kyle, he had seven.
That's the same amount of drops as Ceedee Lamb had
last year. And no, I wasn't making a joke of
last night because CD messed that game up. But like

(25:30):
I think people have been so down on Xavier because
of that drop he had against the Eagles. If he
didn't drop that pass against the Eagles, I don't think
the drops will be as much of a talking point
as it became this offseason. I am fully expecting a
big start to the year for Xavier league Get. I
think too many people have been written him off as
some type of bomb and have forgotten the fact that

(25:50):
in a lot of games he got open, he just
dropped it. I think he can overcome the drops. And
I remember when we had Jake Delomo in a couple
of times for out the offseason, he mentioned how you know,
even though it wasn't really noticeable and didn't really show
up on the stat sheet that for the first time
in a while, we saw Zavier le Get play with
a little bit of confidence in that last game in Atlanta.
So I'm I'm quite frankly, I'm thinking that xavierly Get's

(26:12):
gonna prove a lot of people wrong and shut a
lot of people up by having a hot start to
the season.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
Okay, Well, we also have the you know, a strong
opinion on the text line right now that Fizzle is
an undercover Atlanta Falcons fan. Was there any specific thing
you heard there to indicate that or is that just
people thinking he's a hater hater from Atlanta try to
tear down the Carolina Panthers. I don't listen. Are there
no special players on this roster? No, I think that

(26:37):
Derek Brown could be classified as such.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
I do. I think that, you know, j C.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
Horn has the potential to be that Bryce Young has
the potential to me to be special. The believers in
Teneral McMillan have a chance to believe he has a
chance to be special. But you know, again, we'll have
to wait and see. Who do you think on the
Jacksonville side, is you know, special at the NFL level.
Maybe Brian Johnson, Tom oh Bright. I'm sorry, Brice, Brian Thomas.

(27:02):
Do we think Brian Thomas JUNI your special? I think
you know there's a good Josh Hams Allen, Josh Heinz Allen. Yeah,
But like it's about your list. Is there a real
disparity in special players between these two teams right now?
Like even if you don't think that there's an abundance
of special guys on this roster, maybe like there are
in other places Kansas City, Philadelphia, maybe Detroit. You know,
is the team on the other side, Jacksonville, do they

(27:23):
have a litany of special players. I'm certainly not convested that.

Speaker 4 (27:27):
Here's the problem I had with a lot of people
in the talking points of how negative people have gotten
over the last few weeks. And I get it because
the preseason performance against the Texans was not great. You
traded Adam Field, Jalen Coker goes on ir, You've had
a lot of stuff Inchy Quantu in his situation, which
has me the most concern. But here's my problem, Kyle.
I understand. I said, I think Jacksonville's gonna win, But
I feel like a lot of people when talking about

(27:49):
this game, have gotten so negative just because they've been
watching what Caroline has been doing. They've forgotten the fact
that even though that this team has a lot of wards,
Jacksonville has almost just as many wards as Carolina does. Sure,
and it's basically who's going to be the one to
eliminate the Warts on Sunday to most and it's gonna
be the margin is going to be very close. I'm

(28:10):
kind of getting sick and tired of people acting like
it's going to be a blowout and people thinking, oh,
they're automatically going to suck, even though I said they're
gonna lose.

Speaker 2 (28:17):
I think it's going to be a close game. Well, listen,
I think that too. Cooper Flogg said Bryce can be special? Really, KB,
why is that an outrageous take? Why he's the number
one overall pick? He played like the number one overall
pick down the stretch last year. He ended the season
in Atlanta against a team that had playoff aspirations and
still a chance going into the day, and he put

(28:39):
five touchdowns on him. So I don't know if he
will be But do you really think it's outrageous to
suggest that the former number one overall pick quarterback who
is still just what twenty three to twenty four years old,
has a chance to be special.

Speaker 3 (28:49):
I think that's crazy.

Speaker 2 (28:50):
If you don't now, again, you're entitled to your opinion,
but I don't think that's wild, not based on what
we've seen most recently seven oh four five, seven oh
ninety six ten, and also with Atlanta. I heard Bone
and Mack bring it up this morning. I don't love
the ESPNFPI stuff. I don't not necessarily always trust their analytics,
and they've done some things that I think would justify

(29:10):
me in believing that way. But I think they gave
the Panthers a twenty one percent chance to win the
division and a fourteen percent chance to make the playoffs,
and no was the other way around fourteen percent chance
to win the division, twenty one percent chance to make
the playoffs, so a one in five shot to make
the playoffs. I would think that they are right there,
neck and neck with Atlanta. But ESPNS FPI gave the
Falcons a twenty seven percent chance to win the division

(29:33):
and a thirty seven percent chance to make the playoffs.
I believe with the numbers, I would expect those two
teams to be right there neck and neck, because well,
last we saw that's pretty much the impression that we got.
I thought anyway, seven h four five, seven oh ninety
six to ten Monday Headlines today, Panthers Edition would love
your thoughts. We're also going to talk about the big week.
Well it's not that it's not that big. They're all important,

(29:54):
but Week two of college football not quite the star
studded lineup of Week one, but of course a ton
of games to talk about. With Chip Patterson hearing about
nine or ten minutes, smoke, what did you say one
college football team is doing in terms of their uniforms
this weekend?

Speaker 4 (30:10):
Oh, Idaho, Idaho they're honoring, you know, because i'd ho
they make a lot of potatoes.

Speaker 3 (30:15):
They do. There are lots of taters. They are to vandals.

Speaker 4 (30:17):
But they have a special helmet out this weekend where
it's written in cursive similar to Florida Gators, except that
says the fighting Taters.

Speaker 3 (30:25):
And Homefield that's gonna be on the helmet but fighting Taters.

Speaker 4 (30:28):
Yes, and home Field has released apparel line of t
shirts with fighting Taters and Kyle I am not an
Idaho fan. I'd buy that. I'd buy that too, Yeah,
buy that. It's kind of like when I bought in
high school one of the best shirts I had, I
had a Montgomery Biscuits T shirt.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
See, this is one of the cool things in sports
right now. That's happening because in part the success of
the Savannah Bananas and how they've you know, upended the
traditional sport of baseball and become this powerhouse brand. We
have been seeing it in minor league baseball for years,
this willingness to rebrand so many of these minor league teams,
especially since Major League Baseball's reshuffling, because rebranding can be

(31:04):
highly lucrative, especially if you're able to come up with
or establish a brand that people love. Right, And so
you're seeing all these new minor league teams that people
are snapping up all the gear for, like the trash
pandas for instance, Right, people love this stuff. I was
on the phone driving into work this morning, and I
was talking to the folks that I nine sports. I'm
gonna be coaching my son's three to five year old

(31:25):
T ball squad here in about two weeks. Right, So
I'm on the phone with these folks this morning. They're like, yeah, KB,
you're listed as the head coach, you got seven players
on your roster, all right, you're good to go on
that front. But you don't have a team name, and
you're allowed to name your team whatever you want to. Now,
I didn't know this was a thing. I didn't know
I was allowed to do this. So I got to
come up with a team name. And there's like an

(31:46):
old school, traditional part of me that thinks, well, just
like I did in my youth, our teams were the Braves,
the Dodgers, the Yankees, the Cubs, the Athletics. Right, But
do I want to go that way, smoke, or do
I come up with some awesome name for this three
to five year old? I guess I need some help
naming a three to five year old baseball slash t
ball team on the FanDuel text line today. So if

(32:09):
you're feeling creative, I'll take your best suggestions. What should
I name my son's very first baseball team? Because I've
been bestowed that power, apparently by the fine folks at
nine nine Sports and the first games in two weeks.
So what am I naming this kid's baseball team? Seven
O four five seven ninety six ten. Spider Monkeys came
in right off the top. Spider Monkeys is strong. Chris
and Hunters will out of exile going with Spider Monkeys.

Speaker 3 (32:30):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
Help me out with what you got. We'll come back
to it. Right now, we go to smoke on the headlines.

Speaker 3 (32:38):
Who is smoke? Where is smoke? Where there's smoke, there's fire.
Let's go what's going off? Quote?

Speaker 4 (32:46):
All right, Well, we start out with some unfortunate news
regarding to Carolina Panthers. Found out earlier today Dan the
Marie math Is, who they picked up off of waivers
last week and was with E Barrow back the one
year at Denver towards ACL at Wednesday's practice and he
is done for the season. Won't be shocked if eventually

(33:07):
they reach an injury settlement within the coming days.

Speaker 2 (33:10):
Just total misfortunate luck here, awful, just terrible news. And
again it's just like it's they've been largely healthy throughout,
but these injuries as we close in toward week one.
I mean not that Demaron Mathis was going to decide
this game, but I mean, I guess we can't ever
know that that stakes it really does. All right, listen,
we'll come back, Chip Patterson, cbssports dot Com Talking Week
two and college football were live for Platform Sports. Not

(33:34):
to get everybody all started up, but Carolina Panthers legend
KK Short just walked through the door. Trey Boston's making
an appearance as well. It's gonna be a fun night
out here. Come see US Sports Radio ninety two to
seven WFNZ live from Platform Sports in South End, KB

(34:06):
Colin Hoggard, AJ and Nelly Promotions extraordinary. We got the
crew here at Platform hanging out, getting set for a
great party tonight. We got some young listeners here with
their other fine looking parents as well. This place is
filling up. How are y'all doing? Pound it right there?
There we go. We got some young WFNZ listeners here
in the building. Absolutely Panthers fans as well. Speaking of that,
Panthers tickets being given away tonight. We've got tickets to

(34:29):
Panthers and Dolphins in Week five. We're not giving them
away here at FNZ, but they are at Platform, So
you got to get out here for your chance to win.
KK Short, former Panther, he's in the house. He's apparently
going to stop buy and throwing a headset here in
about fifteen minutes. So right now we got to get
to it. Chip Patterson, cbssports dot Com, CBS Sports Network
and the Cover three podcast. He's back with us for

(34:49):
a Friday conversation, Chip, what's going on, brother Howard things?

Speaker 3 (34:52):
How was week one for you?

Speaker 6 (34:54):
Oh? I mean it's like k Im right, you got
five five in five days. I did a little in
studio work all day Friday, all day Saturday. I was
in Chapel Hill for the most one of the most
horrifying nights of football that I've ever been a part of.
You know, it's a you know, I'm still unpacking it.
I don't know if you've got to hear the instant

(35:14):
reaction version of the Cover three, and we did right
after the TCU win. But I did it from the
Athletic the TCU Athletic Directors spot, and so it was
a very raw out pouring basically therapy of Confernelli letting
me unpack yet another opportunity of the tar heels just
falling on their face on the biggest stages in the sport.

Speaker 2 (35:36):
It was very kind of TCUs Ad to give you
a space to get your thoughts out in podcast form.
But for anybody who didn't hear it. We all talked
about it, certainly all day long on Tuesday Prime Time.
They get blown out after an incredible pregame scene, after
a great opening drive, and it was just all straight
downhill from there. How bad is it? How bad is
the aftermath? And how does that, in your opinion, change

(35:57):
the trajectory of the tar heels.

Speaker 6 (36:00):
Feeds up one of my burning questions about Bill Belichick
in college football. You know, I said that one of
the biggest questions that we would not know and would
be impossible to know until we got into the season.
What's going to be How is he going to guide
a locker room of one and ten, one hundred and
twenty college players through adversity, Because when you're up within

(36:22):
New England, or even if you're in Cleveland, those are
fifty three to seventy five men that are playing to
put food on the table, in many cases, to put
food on the table for a family. Just an entirely
different mindset about the way that you face adversity. That
is not the case for has never been the case
for college athletes where a very few percentage of them

(36:44):
are even going to the NFL, and it is even
less the case for college athletes in today's transactional nature
of college sports, where the transfer portal is always awaiting.
His great challenge for this week is to keep that
locker room together because what they've got ahead. Everyone thought
it was gonna be an easier manageable schedule, but I

(37:04):
just think the margins are very thin for this team.
The weaknesses that we had on paper in terms of
upfront defensively exposed right away by CCU. He's kind of
whipped them at the line of scrimmage. And those offensive
line injuries, you know, all of the way, being down
to your first string center for the season opener very
clearly an issue once they got after that first drive,

(37:26):
a total inability to run the football. So you know,
this is a group where I know they talked about
the roster building process and you know, being bigger and stronger.
In Michael Lombardi's own words, quote the middle of the field, well,
the middle of the field right now and at least
against CCU quote showed that it needed a lot of work.
So there's some some soft factors, you know, some intangible

(37:48):
in terms of making sure that this team seventy new players,
many of them haven't been fighting for their brother year
over year like you have in some other programs. He's
got to keep that locker room together. But then there's
also some very simple x's and nose stuff. And Kyle,
here's what I'll tell you. I am confident that the
x's and ose stuff will get sharpened up, they'll find
new ways to win. They'll put in some adjustments that

(38:10):
will make them a better football team when they take
the field against Charlotte this weekend. But I do not know,
and we won't know even through maybe the middle of
the season. Is the intangible stuff, whatever's being done to
help keep this group together.

Speaker 2 (38:23):
All right, So, well, Clemson, LSU, Florida State, Alabama, Texas,
Ohio State. Like, which game in Week one do you
think induced the biggest overreaction from college football fans?

Speaker 6 (38:36):
Well, I mean the arts manning of it all was
definitely the biggest over reaction, right.

Speaker 3 (38:42):
Probably, Yeah, I mean I think that's pretty safe.

Speaker 6 (38:44):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, like that's the way that it
was getting thrown out. And then then our whole what
is the definition of a generational talent? I mean, we've
we really lost the plot because I'll tell you what
I saw from Arts Manning and really from the ex
with Longhorns, I saw a super talented player have a

(39:05):
bad game. I mean credit to Ohio State yet, but
I'm not gonna bend over backwards to say it was
all Ohio State and Arts Fanning in the press conference
right after the game admitted, we have to get better
on offense and it starts with me. Texas's defense looked awesome.
Hexans defense played well enough to win that game, and
offensively they just didn't have it.

Speaker 5 (39:26):
There were some.

Speaker 6 (39:27):
Brows that Art Smith he was not seeing it in
terms of the defense and the pressure that they were
bringing or stimulating poked a little bit off schedule, kind
of running for his life a lot, and there's there's
just a lot that needs to be improved on. And
I just players have bad game, people have bad days.
At worn't Arch Banting will be better. And the thing

(39:48):
is to go these next couple of weeks and he's
gonna put up a stupid number. He's gonna have incredible highlights.
He is going to hit all of the like trending
topics with you know, five total touchdowns against San Jose State,
and he's going to light up their next opponent, and
it's really going to be only a couple games this
season that arch Manning will be able to reverse the narratives.

(40:11):
Because here's the narrative. You came from Newman you know,
a nice, very nice school in New Orleans, but your
competition was not the same as the very highest levels
of high school football. And you are out there as again,
as I said, lighting up lesser opponents. But what arch
Manning needs to do, and really what Texas's offense under

(40:32):
Steve Starkesian needs to do, is to be able to
really have that same success against the very best opponents
and the very best defenses that they faced. Because last
year when you weres going up against Georgia in two losses,
did not score seventeen points in either games, and Texas
against the best defenses really started to struggle last year.

(40:54):
So Canteve Sarkisian and arch Manning and Texas football did
it done against the best competition. Because right now, I
still think even after watching Texans in Week one, they
can go to the College Football Playoffs quarterfinals or semi finals.
I'm not ready to pick Texas as the national champion
until they show that offense can be just as successful

(41:14):
against Ohio State as it is against San Jose.

Speaker 2 (41:18):
Did the Clemson loss on Saturday night lead you as
it has some to believe that maybe all Clemson did
was take it was bring back a good team from
last year, but not a great team. I mean, obviously
this week Dabo is begging writers to write all about
how his quarterback sucks, his wide receiver sucks, and everything else.
But you know, since we're talking about conclusions, what did
you take away from that one?

Speaker 3 (41:38):
What's important?

Speaker 6 (41:41):
What's important is the gap between you You're talking about
being very good and being excellent and elite.

Speaker 5 (41:51):
You know the gap there.

Speaker 6 (41:53):
I might have been on display, and I will talk
about the quarterbacks because the other quarterback looked like the
other quarterback made some plays against where I think is
one of the best defenses in the country, right Like
I think Clemson's defense is phenomenal and clearly did almost
everything that they could do to be able to give

(42:14):
Clumkson a shot to win that game. And Garrett Nusmyer, again,
he didn't pile up a whole bunch of touchdowns, but
the way he avoided pressure, the way he kept drives
drives alive, he hung in there. Took some big hints
and got back up, kept throwing punches. That was that
was a performance in a hostile environment that as we're
looking around for QB one at the end of that Saturday,

(42:37):
you know it's like, oh God, well it's not gonna
be Arch and Julian saying on the other side for
Ohio State, you know, well, Hire State won. But it
wasn't like he was going to be the one that
knocks you off your feet. And and Kye Clebbe in
that moment, did not you stepped forward and grab hold
of really looking like I'm gonna take this game over.
I thought Garrett Nufsmyer did. Both defenses were outstanding. I

(43:01):
think both defenses are among the best in the country.
Place Bakers done a phenomenal job but solidifying what's been
a leaky, leaky LSU defense. But I thought Garrett Neufmeyer
outplayed Cavee clubnet and that is the seven point differential
in the game. So again, say, Vegas, Texas Bunson good
enough to win the AC seams, good enough to make
the College Football playoffs? Do you take them seriously at

(43:23):
the National championship contender? I say no until I see
their quarterback Jeff up and grapple one of the game
like that.

Speaker 2 (43:30):
I hear you, all right, last thing here, We'll let
you go. Not nearly as big as Slate. In week two.
We do have Michigan Oklahoma for game Day Top twenty matchup,
but we had Many Diaz on the show yesterday. They
won their opener against Elon. Took them a while to
pull away, but they eventually did. And they're going to
see Brett Vilama and twelfth ranked Illinois, or they're hosting
rather Brett Vilama twelfth ranked Illinois this weekend.

Speaker 3 (43:51):
Do they get it done? How big a win would
this be for Duke oh Man.

Speaker 6 (43:54):
It would be a massive win for Duke. I think
it could jump start a really special season. It would
continue to build confidence for in Darien Mensa in this offense,
continuing to try to build on the success that they
had in the second half against Elon. I'm I do now,
Do I think it happens? That's a that's another conversation
because I can buy some stock big picture while also

(44:16):
within the context of looking at this mashup and say
to that defensive front and the really the linebackers in particular,
they're gonna have their hands pull because Illinois brings back
a really big and a really experienced offensive line. And
my as they are continuing to look to find the
next replacements a wide receiver for Zach Ryah Franklin and
Pat Bryant who are now in the NFL, you know,

(44:39):
I think that in the road environment, they're going to
really lean on this ground game, you know, kind of
just blow things down because Duke goes bets right offensive
coordinator Jonathan Brewer, he just want to go SATs.

Speaker 1 (44:51):
That's fat.

Speaker 6 (44:51):
Let Garry and mist to fill it up. How do
you counteract that long, slow, methodical drives. You might get
some Wisconsin ret Vilma out there in this game. Duke's
defensive front got to get stopped, got to get off
the field, maybe force some turnovers, because the game plan
right now leads like, well, not into their strength. I

(45:12):
think Duke is stronger than the secondary. They've got phenomenal
players and they aren't necessarily upfront. I could be wrong
about that, could be proven wrong in Durham, but I
just think that right now, that's the game plan. You've
got to get off the field because Wisconsin's could come.
I mean nowis conson. Look at that Illinois coming to
play bullyball and trying to make sure Darien Nson doesn't
touch the ball all that offense.

Speaker 2 (45:33):
I hear you, Chip. Have a great weekend, buddy, as
always enjoy the game. We'll be tuning into the podcast
on Monday.

Speaker 3 (45:37):
Be well sounds good, Jobby, Well they go.

Speaker 2 (45:40):
Chip Patterson hanging out with us on a Friday live
at Platform Sports. Kick it off the NFL weekend. We'll
come back, KK Short Panthers Legend, Perdue Legend. KK Short,
