Speaker 2 (00:34):
Good afternoon, Queen City Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ,
it's the best damn sports talking to. Carolina's back with
you on a Wednesday. Hornets lost last night Duke in
Town against Texas. We got Rico Dowdell working on the
side today scaring Panthers fans just a little bit. And
more record breaking numbers from the World Series. We have

(00:55):
the College Football Playoff initial rankings last night, and I
gotta be on. I didn't have that much to complain about,
although I do think the ACC is not very good
conference and is not going to get multiple teams into
the College Football Playoff this year. Shocker. We'll talk about it.
Ryan McGee's coming up at four twenty five. Roman Harper's
back at five o'clock, and Tom Bogert of the Athletic

(01:17):
Covers MLS covers all things soccer, including the US national team.
He's going to stop by a three forty five. We
will discuss Charlotte FC and NYCFC in Game three coming
up Friday here in the Queens City. So hit us
up seven oh four five, seven oh ninety six ten.
We'd love to hear from you with your thoughts on

(01:37):
just about anything you're thinking about today here on this Wednesday.
He's at Smoke Ludwig on x formerly Twitter as well,
and again we start with a lot of things to
discuss today, but Smoke you were. I was working Hornet's
pregame last night for Hornets Pelicans, which turned out to
be a disaster, not a blowout, but a disaster at
the end. You and Fiddy and some of the FNS

(02:00):
guys ended up at the the Dick Vitel Classic over
at Spectrum Center to watch Duke in Texas square off
last night in one of the you know, many Duke
non conference contests that are coming up for them in
the non conportion of the regular season. How was that
last night? I was stuck here behind the mic. It
was slaving away behind the hot microphone in studio doing

(02:21):
Hornet's pre game. I was very jealous of the FNZ
crew that got to go over there last night.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
It was very nice first time being in the reimagined
Spectrum Center you imagine. Yeah, you can definitely see in
the concourse areas. I mean, good lord, it is so
much more open than it used to be. It's awesome
that that is the biggest plus. And where we sit
in the media the media row, it's the opposite end
of where you enter that they completely caved out the
opening and it's like this was so needed because it

(02:46):
was kind.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
Of feel like celebrities walking in there. Now you do.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
And I'll say it, it's not like it was completely
dark in there. Yeah, over the last you know, twenty years,
but there's a new brightness in that arena that you
can tell is like, oh, I can see a lot
more things now. And I'll say, good crowd out there,
not not sell out or anything like that. But for
a Tuesday night neutral side game hole Lower bill a

(03:09):
Bull was filled. It was about i'd say at least
seventy five eighty percent full, So you've had about i
would say fifteen thousand people there, give or take. And
it was very pro Duke. We're talking ninety five percent
Duke fans, four percent Texas fans. And then you had
Larry Brown in attendance.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
Well, Larry Brown goes to everything yeah, on top of
coaching everywhere.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
And I basically told Fiddy, I was like, I want
to give that man a piece of my mind. I say,
remember when you drafted DJ Augustine over brook low Penzi.
Well here's to Yeah, still not over that, but yeah,
So it was good atmosphere.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
Game start out very clunky, it was.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
It was a rock fight for a little bit, but
then both offenses got it going. But you could clearly
tell that Duke was the better team for out the
entirety of the game. And while it wasn't the most
glamorous performance from Cameron Boozer, do Mesar, the veteran specifically
Isaiah Evans showed out in his hometown last night fourteen
points within the first ten minutes, ended up I believe

(04:07):
with twenty three, twenty four points, freeze galore, dunks galore,
and the defense of intensity that Duke had, Oh my gosh,
like they were. They've been good with John Shire on
defense to begin his tenure. Yeah, if they play like
that every single game, that might be the best defense
Dukes had. Like Fitty looked around and told me, and
we were sitting beside Vast I heard of Carolina Blitze

(04:28):
He's like, this is like late nineties Duke defense.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Oh yeah, they locked down. I told you last night
I was, you know, I was. I had both team
By the time I got home last night, I had
the Hornets on a big TV and I had that
game on the small screen, and I didn't have the
audio on, and you could like it didn't need the commentary.
You could see the way that Duke was defending in
that game last night, Isaiah. The first half was tight,

(04:52):
by the way Texas led at the break thirty three
thirty two. Duke started cold, then got hot thanks to
a stretch from Isaiah Evan, who I mean, wow, If
you're looking for that kid to step up and take
the next step as a player this year, last night
felt like the beginning of that potentially career high twenty
three points, four for five from deep and then Cameron Boozer,

(05:13):
who we've just been raving about and the season's barely begun,
son of former NBA and Duke star Carlos Boozer, scoreless
in the first half. He was zero for seven from
the field, but exploded in the second half to finish
with fifteen points and thirteen rebounds. Duke opening up that
second half with a ten zero run and essentially took
control from there. And I was laughing this morning listening

(05:35):
to the Mack and Bone Show and listening to all
three of those guys, but Fiddy in particular, who I
guess you were sitting next to last night raving about
the physique of Cameron Boozer. How much of that now?
I just saw your reaction, so clearly you feel the
same way. But listening to Fiddy described the physique of
Cameron Boozer this morning was something else. But it's evident
on your face you clearly have the same feelings about it.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
That's an NFL body. That's not a basketball body, man,
that's an NFL body. Where are you running some grow
go routes or some quick curls man?

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Yeah? Curls? Uh curls for the girls. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
So I he was a little bit raw round when
it came to offense. Shot Like his three point shot
doesn't look bad, it just doesn't look like it has
enough unfinit that'll take time with development.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
I don't think he'll have it while he's in college.
That'll be had.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
That'll be something he'll have to grow in the NBA game.
But all the stuff physicality, specifically on the defensive end,
is there. Yeah, It's like, I don't feel concerned about that,
and then you kind of get reminded, Oh yeah, Malik
Brown comes off the bench.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
How crazy is that?

Speaker 2 (06:36):
I mean, the fact that Malik Brown's coming off the
bench is it's like, ah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
And did you see his passes? His deflections.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
I told Fiddy about five minutes into the game and
like that, gum, there go going Roy. But that gum,
the amount of deflections we've seen in the first five minutes.
They're on pace to have like hundreds upon hundreds of
deflections throughout the season if that continues, and I think
it will to a certain extent. Now there are certain
things that they're gonna have to work on home. I
think Dome got more comfortable as the game went along,
but he still was kind of little Herky Jerky's saying

(07:04):
for Cameron Boozer, Patrick Gungba, he's playing more outside than
he's used than he was playing last year, which is
going to be kind of concerning for me because I
don't know if he's really one of those big men
that you want to have outside that you just want
to have low down to the back to the basket
and let him play the old fashioned way. So that's
kind of a concern I think they're going to have
to work on over the next couple of weeks heading
into conference play. But I mean, you got guys like

(07:25):
Isaiah Evans balling out, Cameron Boozer got going into second half,
had a double double, and then you have Malik Brown
coming off the bench too. And I'll also say, even
though he didn't have the biggest minutes, I wouldn't be
shocked if we see a guy like Darren Harris grow
into a role as the season progresses too.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
No, I'm with you on that. It was a really
good night for Duke fans. Clearly, like you said, that
was the more heavily represented fan base as it should
be by country in the state of North Carolina. The
first half would have said it did suggest that Duke,
or rather excuse me, Texas could hang around, But Duke's
adjustments and second half in intensity just flipped that game.

(08:02):
Boozers impact off the bench, he stepped up in the
second half. Turnovers, cold shooting sunk Texas. They just couldn't
sustain any of the early momentum that they found and
for Texas. By the way, Dylan Swain had sixteen points,
so you know he was one of the bright spots
for them. But Duke gets a big early season win
and again they will be just tested over and over
again in the non conference portion of the schedule. And

(08:25):
this is the way that the John Shier wants it.
And last night was again it was a big night
because it was a special event, Dicky v all that stuff.
But this is what Duke does now. And I realized
the haters and detractors, and I'm not a Duke fan,
so I'm not sneering at you. I'm just saying I
understand you're going to tell me that for all that
talent and all the five star recruits and all the
NBA players, that they sure haven't hung many Final four

(08:45):
banners or won much in the Final four or beyond.
And that's fine, but this is what they do now.
They beat Texas last night, they got Smokes Catamounts up. Next,
they got Army, they got Indiana State, then they see
Kansas top twenty teen. They're going to face Florida in Arkansas.
And the non conference portion of the schedule as well,
they got Michigan State coming up in early December, two

(09:06):
Texas Tech on December the twentieth. I mean, just clearly
this was the strategy. You know, load up on these games,
test yourself, become battle tested early, and this is what
you have to do when you know Duke's in a
great position. It's not as if they're in some struggle,
but you know, when you rotate and you know are
swapping out talent the way that they are every single year,
the best way to have that team tournament ready is

(09:28):
to test the hell out of them in the first
month of the season.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
And in the back half of K's Eric career specifically,
I'd say the last fifteen to twenty years of K
it was all right, have one big tip off neutral
site game, right, not Con dot Con, maybe a big
ten ACC Challenge game or now sec ACC Challenge, all right,
and didn't get ready for conference.

Speaker 4 (09:46):
But it's shifted.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
You know, the ACC has not been the same ACC
as it's been over the last five years. John Shire
has new philosophies.

Speaker 4 (09:52):
And I've been to lot. John Shire has kind of
been ticked off.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
With a lot of people who been saying, well, Duke
doesn't play anybody, what are you gonna say this year, huh,
But what's gonna be excused this year? And I think
they're gonna be ready. And look, I think that Texas
team is gonna be pretty good. It's they're not gonna
be great. I don't think it's year one of Sewan Miller,
so it's gonna be kind of a rebuilding year for them.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
But Shawn Miller is a good basketball coach. We know
we can get the job done.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
I wouldn't be shocked to see the Longhorns make the
tournament in year one, especially being in the SEC, so
I it's not like they played to nobody here, and
you know they'll have a couple of games to tune
up before they take on Kansas. Then they'll have two games,
as you said, against Arkansas, Florida and Michigan State. But
I think that was a good season opener, not something
that's gonna be too hard. But also it's a challenge

(10:34):
for your team because you're going against a power forward
team that's likely likely has a good chance to make
the tournament if they do your jobs.

Speaker 4 (10:42):
Possibly. So then you enjoyed yourself at that game last.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Night, and now Saturday is gonna be hell for me.
Because they played Western Carolina.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Well that's fine too, But what I was more aiming
at was you got to have fun at that game
last night. At what point did you realize what the
Hornets had done or we're doing in New Orleans last
night at this Smootheking Center midway for the second half.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
How angry were you?

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Because I can tell you with somebody who was watching
the game live, it was it was sickening to watch
them blow that game to the Pelicans in New Orleans
last night. I mean it really was, I mean nausea
inducing to watch them give that game away the way
that they did. And I gotta be honest, between some
of the rotations that were out there last night, Charles
Lee's catching a lot of hell today from the Hornets

(11:23):
fans for some of the rotations out there inbounds plays
didn't look fantastic at times. I mean, they got off
to a good start last night, quick lead, hot shooting,
strong start from kan Ka Nipple. I mean it did
look like they were, you know, jumping out early on
top of a bad team. They've done that, you know,
a time or two already, and they would be able

(11:43):
to jump on them early, and you know, maintain the
lead and possibly just get a win, get back to
five hundred over a bad team. And then of course,
you know, you start getting into the benches and New
Orleans gets hot from deep and the Hornets are clearly
frustrated by that, and you know, the offense gets bogged
down a little bit. There was an eighteen point swing

(12:04):
in favor between the middle of the first quarter and
the middle of the second quarter. Hornets clawed back a
little bit before the break, still trailed after two quarters,
and then you fast forward to late in the game.
It just all that momentum they built it went away.
They took the lead back, they were able to maintain it.
Then it fell apart late and they had as many

(12:25):
turnovers as made field goals in the fourth quarter, and
they didn't score a point after the finale. In the
final three and a half minutes. I mean, Jose Alvarado
step back three gave them the lead. That was the
cherry on top of just a crap sandwich. But like
then you had the Miles Bridges rushed bad three point
attempt to try to tie the game, Pelicans get the rebound.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
That's that.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
Like, there were some good things. Kan Kin Nipple continues
to prove that just he's a great draft pick, or
at least it looks like he's going to be first
career double double. Last night, he had twelve rebounds in
that game. You know, Ryan Kalkbrean is putting up good
numbers early on, and we cannot again overlook the fact
that LaMelo and Brandon aren't playing. But we've been saying
that for a couple of years now, so it no
longer holds any meaning to people outside of just you know,

(13:10):
unfiltered frustration that these guys are sitting on the bench again.
Hopefully LaMelo's back on Friday. If not, I don't know
what we're saying by that point, but like last night
was really really frustrating. That's just not I don't know, man,
no Brandon, no LaMelo. Like I shouldn't be shocked that
they can lose it. But you play that way, it's

(13:30):
you fight back, you take the lead. It looks like
you've finally gotten your legs up underneath you, and you
just give it away to an zero to six team
and give up their first win of the season.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
Yeah, and you know, I was watching back that game
last night, Kyle. The problem was It wasn't the rookies
that were turned the ball over late. It was the veterans.
It was Colin Sexton. And you know, look, I kind
of flipped my phone over when I saw that they
lost the game on press row. If I knew that
Miles Bridges was taking a stupid fade away three with
his unreliable jump shot, I would have heated it.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
You wanna saw a fall in on the court. That's
how mad.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
I'm just I'm gonna say, I don't care how many
points he puts up. I don't care what he says
or if he puts on instagrams like, oh, I see
what you guys are saying about me. You're not an
efficient player. You are only an efficient player for one year.
You've been in anvil on this franchise and his fan
base for four to five years. You haven't changed your ways,
both on and off the court. Unfortunately, it feels like

(14:25):
and what I'm done with him. I'm done with him.
This team is not fully gonna change until zero is gone.
I don't care what you get for him. You can
get a guy into you can get five guys from
the G League. I'd rather take them than Miles Bridges
because Miles Bridges is not a winning player. And I
think there's a lot of guys that there's a lot
of guys that are gonna be making progress with this team.

(14:47):
There's actual progress, I think with this team in this organization,
and I look no further than that draft class. I
also look at last night too, Trey Man, another good
game for him, another efficient until the end, until the end, Yes,
until the end. But Miles Bridges is the a one
calls right now. You're supposed to be the gout. I
can't trust you to be a leader. I can't trust
you to make smart shots. I can't trust you to

(15:07):
be on defense and make big stops because you're lack
of days on defense. And then when you get call out,
you make big gains and have two good games with scoring,
even though one of them.

Speaker 4 (15:16):
Was not efficient.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
And last night, yeah you had twenty two points, you
still shot thirty six point eight percent from the floor.
You're not efficient, You're not good on defense. You're a
hindrance to this franchise. I can't wait till the Hornets
trade him in the deadline in a couple months.

Speaker 4 (15:29):
I'm sick of it. I've had seven years of this crap.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
It's it's just not I was excited about him being
springy and being in great shape. And you know, he's
kept his nose clean, we think, and certainly been out
of the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
And he has put up good numbers.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
And I'm sure there will be some people who defend
him on the text line, but like he just he
made so many bad decisions last night, had a couple
of turnovers with some really bad decisions, bad passes in
transition that the Pelicans turned into layups. You know, he
turned around after one of those and chuck to three
pointer with a hand in his face way early in

(16:04):
the shot clock. Like, when you've got teams like that
in that position, you have to play smart, effective basketball
to put them away. You know, it's not the NFL
where we say, you know, nothing's a given week to week.
Sometimes in the NBA things are a given depending upon
the matchup, but nothing's given with the Hornets. You cannot
take your foot off the gas even against an O

(16:25):
and six Pelicans team, and that's what they did. And
a guy who Miles Bridge is now in his eighth year,
you know, to commit that line, that sequence of just
idiotic plays and losing basketball plays in a short stretch
of clock against a team where you're just trying to
put the game away. Is I mean, clearly, it's infuriating

(16:46):
and frustrating. It's just unacceptable. And then Trey Mann, who
on balance did play pretty well last night, but down
the stretch in the fourth quarter when the offense was brutal,
I mean, those guys fell apart. They were the offen
there's the orchestrators of that team falling apart last night.
I mean, those guys were going back and forth playing
iso ball and just taking bad shots, turning the ball over.

(17:10):
You mentioned it a second ago. Colin Sexton was certainly
not great last night, but you know, he wasn't super
involved in the offense in the fourth quarter. I didn't
think kan Kainnipple con forced a three late. You know,
I felt deep from the top of the key that
you know, there could have maybe been a.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Better shot available.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
But I mean I thought maybe there were some opportunities
for him to get a couple of better looks last
night in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
So it was just a bad loss.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
And if if you lose that game, or if you
lose a game like that to a different team that's
not zero to six. Zion didn't play last night. The
Pelicans are the butt of the jokes across the NBA.
You lose to them, and yeah, we can say no LaMelo,
no Brandon, but you had a lead and you had
a chance to close it out to get back to
four and four. And now look at the schedule coming up. Now,

(17:54):
look at the schedule coming up, like they got they
got days off here. You got the NBA Cup games
coming up against the Heat on Fry, the Lakers on Monday,
Bucks after that, Bucks again in a back to back.
One of those is an NBA Cup Group stage game
as well, then the Thunder, Right, I mean, your next
five games are against the Miami who just waxed you,
the Lakers, the Bucks, the Bucks in the thunder.

Speaker 4 (18:13):
Like, what what are we doing?

Speaker 2 (18:15):
I mean, LaMelo, if he's not playing Friday, I can
only imagine how loud those conversations are gonna get. All right,
we got to step aside. We'll take your phone calls,
your thoughts on the Hornets. Big night last night for Duke.
We still have to get to the college football playoff rankings,
and of course the Carolina Panthers Rico Dubtle working off
to the side today. I don't think it's anything to
be concerned about, but we'll talk about it. Sports Radio
ninety two seven wfn Z A smoked heat off on

(18:53):
Miles Bridges there in the opening segment, and I do,
in scanning the FanDuel text line, clearly believe that, you know,
some folk's got more support than he does pushback, although
there are a couple of guys pushing back. As Smoke said,
he looks forward to the day that Miles Bridges gets
traded at the trade deadline.

Speaker 4 (19:09):
Now.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
I don't know if they're going to do that or not.
But last night they blew a game to the Owen six.
Previously Owen six New Orleans Pelicans handed them their first
win of the season. No Zion Williamson last night either
for New Orleans. Some also pointing out that this could
bode poorly for Sunday's game against the Saints. I don't
think those things are related, I gotta be honest. Not
after the trade deadline day had yesterday. Yeah, TC said

(19:32):
he thinks that Smoke went a little bit too far
on Miles Bridges and wanting him traded AJ, who was
just fighting with me like cats and dogs yesterday over
the baseball ratings. He said, you really are quick to
jump on Miles, Lol. Don't waste any time on him.
Dude carries us while all these other p words sit
out and refuse to work. And he has one bad

(19:53):
game and y'all jump down his throat. Literally should be
screaming at everybody other than Miles for what he's done
the past few years. This is so stupid, that's what
AJ said. Well, first of all, Aj, I will hear
your points about durability. Okay, when it comes to Miles,
I'll grant you that he's definitely more durable and it's
definitely played more. I would, however, point out that Miles

(20:15):
did accept the blame last night for the loss, citing
the same turnovers and bad shots selection that we are
pointing out to start the show, Like that's what it
boils down to. Miles has put up good numbers, but
a veteran in his eighth year repeatedly making really dumb plays,
chucking shots early in the shot clock, bad turnovers. I mean,

(20:36):
that's against a bad if they can't pull out a
win against a top half Western Conference team. Okay, that's fine.
You can't beat the Pelicans with the lead, you can't
find a way to close it out with those veterans
on the floor. It's okay to be frustrated by that
as far as I'm concerned, Like that's it's the plays specifically,
not just missing the shots. He's not just missing open looks.
He's chucking shots early in the shot clock. He's taken

(20:58):
bad shots. He and Trey Mann were going back and
forth playing iso ball last night down the stretch and
either missing shots or turning it over. There's nothing wrong
with being frustrated by that. Because this team we were
told has greater depth, right, this team is deeper than
they were last year.

Speaker 4 (21:12):
You should be able to at.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
Least find a way to win some of these games
against bottom tier opponents, even without your stars in the lineup.
And you had an opportunity to close it out last night,
and Miles was one of, if not the primary reasons
why they didn't close the game out last night. I
think that's the point that a lot of people are making.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
That and it's just a facade that people think he's
actually a good player because he scores a lot of
points even though it's not been efficient. Guys, outside of
one year, he has not been a good three point shooter.
He has never really been in a good efficient scorer
when it comes to jump shots. He's only really good
at explosive plays. And eventually, even though that spring is
back right now, how much longer do you think that
spring is going to last.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
He's twenty six, twenty seven years old.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
He's lackadaisical in defense, he falls asleep a lot on defense.

Speaker 4 (21:53):
He's a fu gayzy player. He's a few gazze.

Speaker 3 (21:56):
I told Walker dis and I'll tell you this, and
I'll tell everyone this right now. Miles Bridges is the
most empty calorie player that has been in Charlotte since
Kelvin Benjamin. Because I remember listening two D to the
station in twenty seventeen when people are still not giving
up on Kevin Benjamin, even though he gave up on
routes left and right and there was the weight issues,
saying well, hang on.

Speaker 4 (22:16):
Why does he have the bad year?

Speaker 3 (22:17):
He had nine hundred yard receiver in his first year
back from a torn acl What happened? He immediately got
traded into trade deadline in one of Marty Herney's two
point zero is only really good moves in that stage.

Speaker 4 (22:28):
And what did you in Buffalo? Nothing?

Speaker 3 (22:31):
They ran a fade route to him into a wild
card game, He had no separation. It was a half
assed route and did what do you do next year?

Speaker 4 (22:38):
Nothing?

Speaker 3 (22:38):
That's when Biger McFarlane said he's a Popeyes biscuit away
from being a tight end. Okay, we'll watch Myles Bridges
will get traded from here, and someone will trade for
him at the deadline because he plays in a lot
of games, a lot of points that you just mentioned there,
and they'll maybe have a reduced role. But guess what
he'll do when he leaves Charlotte Probably much of nothing. Well,
here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
If this team does enter a contention window where playoff
contenders and possibly beyond, do we think he's going to
be a part of it?

Speaker 4 (23:03):
I think that's a fair question.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
I also think you just opened up an interesting question too,
like call it empty calories or just the most frustrating
I would ask, you know fans around here, who fits
that bill for them? Who is the most frustrating player
to ever grace the confines of Mecklenburg County? Who is
the most frustrating Hornet or Panther or althrow Charlotte FC

(23:24):
in there. And by the way, Tom Bogert of the
Athletic covers Major League Soccer and the US national team.
He's going to stop buying about fifteen minutes for a
couple of minutes to talk about Friday's playoff Game three
against NYCFC, So stick around for that. But I would
throw it out there, like who is the most frustrating
player to ever grace the confines of Mecklenburg County in
the city of Charlotte via a Panthers or Hornet's uniform

(23:46):
or anybody else, whoever you want to throw in the mix.
Seven oh four five, seven oh ninety six to ten
And immediately I get LaMelo answers as soon as I
finished the question. People are texting in LaMelo ball, and
that's fine.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
I just find it weird how people are more willing
to give up on LaMelo even though he's got a
high ceiling, a lot quicker than they have been with Miles,
and like I said, just due to the off the
court stuff too. He's been in anvil with his contract
situation because we had to wait out Like, well, are
the signing him or not. Well, can't make any moves
because Miles contract situations up in the air.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
Oh uh.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
And by the way, that led to that ridiculous traits
because they were trying to get more money cleared up
from Miles before the incident, and then the next year's like, oh, well,
I guess he's going to resign. That's two straight years
that he was a contract anvil for his franchise too.

Speaker 4 (24:25):
All right, so you're getting a lot of applause.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
I will point out that AJ and DJ Skinner and
Delvis the Rock j.

Speaker 4 (24:33):
Just crossed the line. He said, Brad Hoover sucks. That's
a lot.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
He's just trying to hurt your feelings now. But AJ
and who would I say, Ritchie and Delvis the Rock
DJ Skinner, You do have a couple of people on
the text line that are really coming at your neck
right now. But yeah, listen, the Hornets are frustrating. They're
three and five. They should have won that game last night.
Let's take a phone call. Teflon wants to talk about this.
He wants to talk about Miles Bridges. What's going on? Tethlon?

Speaker 4 (25:00):
Oh, oh, do we have Tatlon on the phone lines.

Speaker 5 (25:03):
Yeah, can you hear me?

Speaker 4 (25:04):
Yeah, we got you. What's going on? Buddy?

Speaker 5 (25:06):
All right, buddy, I think smoke just have you know?
He he doesn't like Miles, and that's obvious. I get that,
you know, but to compare him to Kevin Bijayman, come on, dude,
Kevin Bijamin Belly played, Miles plays every game. This dude
is an iron man.

Speaker 6 (25:19):
I know what happened with him and his wife or whatever,
but I mean, that's that's done.

Speaker 5 (25:24):
They resigned him.

Speaker 6 (25:25):
Let's move on.

Speaker 5 (25:26):
You know that he's still here.

Speaker 6 (25:27):
He plays preseason twenty twenty five minutes in the preseason
in an eight year he does it?

Speaker 5 (25:33):
Man, Come on, man, and I mean Miles and mellow
it's been four years.

Speaker 4 (25:38):
Dude.

Speaker 6 (25:38):
He never plays. He's definitely the most frustrating person we
athlete we've had here.

Speaker 5 (25:42):
In a while.

Speaker 6 (25:43):
I mean, he's really good, but he never plays. This
guy is like the third wheel. He's like the Andrew Wiggins,
the Austin Reeves. He's not supposed to be a superstar.

Speaker 5 (25:51):
He's not a star.

Speaker 6 (25:52):
He's the third wheel, you know, and he's having to
lead this team we have here.

Speaker 5 (25:56):
I think we're developing real star talent here, con.

Speaker 6 (25:59):
And the guys gonna be able to make up for
what we're gonna lose.

Speaker 5 (26:02):
From Miles being hurt and.

Speaker 6 (26:04):
And uh the other guy being hurt all the time.

Speaker 5 (26:06):
We're developing that, but right.

Speaker 6 (26:07):
Now we don't have it.

Speaker 5 (26:08):
Miles is what we have. We cannot be talking about
getting rid of this guy.

Speaker 6 (26:12):
This guy is the only guy who's.

Speaker 5 (26:13):
Gonnay we can go and look at on a nighty
basis that actually puts up point.

Speaker 6 (26:18):
It may not be officient as you like, but he's the.

Speaker 5 (26:21):
Andrew Wiggins, the Austin Reeves.

Speaker 4 (26:23):
He's those guys.

Speaker 5 (26:24):
He's not those Lebron's and the other guys.

Speaker 4 (26:26):
He's the third wheel.

Speaker 6 (26:28):
Yeah, I mean too much on the guy.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
I think maybe I don't know if he'd agree with
this or not for me, because I agree with you, like,
he's not supposed He's not the batman or the robin
on this team.

Speaker 4 (26:36):
He's not supposed to be.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
It's I think, though, for a veteran player, the decision making,
the shot selection, and Miles admitted as much last night.
It was the shot selection of the turnovers last night
that really doomed him. And he was a big part
of that I think it's okay to be frustrated by that.

Speaker 6 (26:51):
It is, and so that's the coaches job, just like.

Speaker 5 (26:53):
You putting Mellow on the bench for not playing defense.

Speaker 6 (26:55):
Sit him down, I mean, don't never keep going out
there making the bad mad mistake. Sit him down. You
did it with your best player. I'm not doing.

Speaker 4 (27:04):
I hear you, thank you for the phone call. Good
to hear from you.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
Teflon defending the honor of one Miles Bridges right there. Again,
we have some people eight to eight numbers saying Teflon's
on point AJ's back, saying to act like durability is
the only thing to hang your hat on if your
pro Miles is crazy. He's actually a damn good basketball
player too. The guy's smoke will stump for is so confusing,
which is why I hit you with a Brad Hoover
sucks well A.

Speaker 3 (27:27):
By the way, I also want to mention too, Uh,
last time I checked, hasn't Miles missed almost the same
amount of games because of his off the court stuff
compared to LaMelo. Sure, so we also got to bring
that up too. And it's also not surprising when you
had basically year and a half off that you were
going to stay on the court once you finally get.

Speaker 2 (27:43):
Key, if you just want to go total games, but
it matters why and how those games are missed, and
he is listen. I'm just I'm trying to present the
side that people are arguing against you and saying he
is talented, he is durable, he does show up, he
does have some big nights. But we all and I
think you'd acknowledge this too. This this team was not
built from Miles to lead them. This team was built
for Miles to be the third banana beside LaMelo and

(28:04):
Brandon Miller, and those guys aren't out there last night.
And in those situations like the fourth quarter last night, Yeah,
Miles might be taking some of those shots, but you're
hoping it's because it's coming off a feed from LaMelo,
you know, or it it's an extra pass from Brandon
drawing defenders, not Miles needing to be the focal point
and engine of the offense to look to those shots.
But I mean, some of that stuff last night was
just bad, bad basketball IQ, bad decision making, stuff that

(28:27):
you would like to only see from younger players. Again,
chuck in the three with six seconds into the shot
clock like that's that's not okay, and Miles admitted last
night it just it was a blown opportunity. You lose
that game to a good team. We're probably talking more
about Rico's availability today than anything else, but you're losing
to the Pelicans, and it's embarrassing for Hornets fans who
are already frustrated because the top two players are out again.

(28:48):
Speaking of Rico down, We're going to come back to
more of this later in the show seven oh four five,
seven oh ninety six to ten. We've had some people
texting in to say, KB, I just got here. What's
the deal with Rico? Is he hurt? Is he going
to play on Sunday? I'm saying that he didn't practice today. Well,
he did practice in a sense. He did warm up
with the team, did all the usual stuff in the
beginning of practice, but then he was working off to

(29:09):
the side. I think we he was riding an incumbent
Mike maybe and was working with the trainers a little bit.
It's Wednesday. He is a veteran at this point. You
know a lot of guys get vet days on Wednesdays.
Let's not forget this team still hasn't had a bye
week yet, and that matters. This team's bye week is
not for another month, so you know that's it's kind
of brutal too in terms of managing injuries in this

(29:31):
game in particular, and he's taken a pounding over the
past couple of weeks. So I unless Dave Canalis and
I watched the press conference earlier today, I didn't see
Dave Canalis say anything about, you know, Rico Daddle being
in doubt for Sunday's game against the Saints. To me,
this is just I think they're being smart and allowing
him to rest up midweek a little bit, work with

(29:51):
the trainers, you know, try to make sure that he's
going to be as close to one hundred percent as
possible against the Saints on Sunday. You'd like to believe
you can win this game with Chuba Hubbard if you
have to, But no one's in that mind frame right
now because Rico is the guy for this team. So
all we know is he was working off to the side.
There's been no indication that he won't play Sunday against
New Orleans, so that's not something that I'm really worried

(30:11):
about right now. Based on all the reporting that we've
seen seven oh four, five, seven ninety six to ten.
Hit us up on the fan duel text line right now,
we go to smoke on the headlines.

Speaker 4 (30:23):
Who is smoke? Where is smoked? Where there's smoke, there's fire.
Let's go. What's you got?

Speaker 5 (30:31):
All right?

Speaker 3 (30:31):
Not all bad news only injury front four to Carolina
Panthers as Caide Mays, Prince Lee Uman, Niellen, and Taylor
Mowton were all full participants in practice and that's a
good sign for all of those. Dave Canals also brought
up during his press conference, which we'll get audio to
you a little bit later, that Austin Corbett will be
officially the right guard moving forward. That is in line
with Brady Christensen getting hurt and the fact that Chandler's

(30:54):
of all who did not practice and got hurt in
the game right when he came back from injury in
Green Bay. On the other note here, Kyle, do you
want to mention dat big news out of Fox? So
last month Mark Sanchez got arrested for that incident in Indianapolis.
He had been working with Adam Amen and now that
the World Series is over or postseason is over for baseball.

Speaker 4 (31:17):
Everyone's back to the assigned cruise.

Speaker 3 (31:19):
Well, Fox has just made a big move to replace
Mark Sanchez. Drew Brees will be joining Adam Amen on
his broadcast crew. So Drew Brees, who already had a
tenure with NBC didn't really go well, but he's now
a Fox.

Speaker 4 (31:34):
Adam Mean a very good broadcaster in his own right.

Speaker 3 (31:37):
So now it's pretty crazy the color commentator that Fox
has Tom Brady, Greg Olsen, Drew Brees talking.

Speaker 4 (31:44):
About name brands.

Speaker 2 (31:46):
Wow, that's big, all right, real quick. Freddy Freeman's Choppers
called me out. I said, incumbent bike. He said, Lol,
you mean recumbent bike. I blame election day. All right,
election Day's over. That's why I said incumbent bike. My mistake. Well,
come back, Tom Boger of the Athletic We spend a
couple of minutes with him. Massive match for Charlotte FC
on Friday that we'll get back to the Panthers and

(32:06):
four o'clock hour Best audio in Sports, and we talk
about the college football playoffs. Initial rankings last night from
the Committee. Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ Sports

(32:44):
Radio ninety two seven wfn Z KB and smoke with
you here on a Wednesday, talking about the Hornets, talking
about Duke in Texas, talking a bit about the Panthers,
and we'll get more into that with the Saints coming
up here shortly, speaking of that former Panther and Saint
Roman Harper. Back at five, we have Ryan McGee and
for twenty five we'll get his thoughts on the end
of the NASCAR season. Heartbreaking finished for Denny Hamlin. Not

(33:07):
so much for Kyle Larson, of course. But Ryan's got
a great piece out over at the Athletic about the
end of the season and how there's near universal sympathy
and disappointment for Denny Hamlin across the garages in NASCAR,
something that I want to I don't think he said
he's never seen before, but I do think the gist
of it was that it's unlike much we've ever seen

(33:27):
before in the history of NASCAR. So that'll come up
with Ryan McGee about forty minutes.

Speaker 3 (33:31):
No, I think we in this era have so much
more access to the drivers that we see a lot
more of that. There was probably something like that for
Mark Martin in two thousand and two when that penalty
came down, Even though it didn't make a difference in
the championship battle, but it did in nineteen ninety.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
But Mark was so young at that point.

Speaker 3 (33:48):
But I mean, let's face it, even though Denny rubbed
people the wrong way, people may have your opinion on him.

Speaker 4 (33:53):
He may not be goodie two.

Speaker 3 (33:54):
Shoes, but Denny Hamlin's warn't the best drivers that we've
seen in the twenty first century NASCAR point blanks.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
No, it doesn't matter what title.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
He has sixty wins, Kyle, only ten drivers have more
wins than him all time. Yeah, Like, and you look
at the wins three time day t on the five
hundred champion, Coke six hundred champion, has won a seven
five hundred so many times it's hard to count. Keep
count sometimes, Like he's won everything but two things. That's
a brickyard four hundred and a championship. Yeah, so it's

(34:24):
one of those things too. And you know, if he
ever wanted, I wouldn't be shocked if he wanted on Sunday,
we might have had a Day and Hart situation.

Speaker 4 (34:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (34:31):
So again that'll come up with Charlotte f c Rather.
Ryan McGee at four twenty five, hoping to talk from
Charlotte FC with Tom Bogert of the Athletic here in
just a minute, still awaiting his phone call, and once
he does give us a ring, we'll put him on
for a couple of minutes. We'll talk about the big
matchup coming up on Friday and looking forward to that conversation.
I do want to you know, look at this right on,
cue my guy, Scott GOTTLIEBDZ. I was actually gonna bring

(34:53):
this up. Scott's out there listening right now. Scott is
one of our favorite people in the building. Scott is
our d digital extraordinary here at wfn Z and Radio
one Charlotte, and he just came in into our studio
during the break to let us know that we had
And I know this sounds like a brag, it is

(35:14):
a brag, but I have to say this because y'all
are responsible. Our downloads for the podcast in the month
of October were just insane. I think our numbers were
up something like thirty five to forty percent. I mean
just massive download numbers for this show on the podcast, Apple, Spotify,
Google in the last month in the month of October,
and Scott literally just texted in to say, hey, you

(35:36):
should thank your listeners remind them they can listen on demand. Well,
I'm going to and I am so thank you Scott
for time at timely text because we do want to
thank the listeners out there. The numbers were just insane
in the month of October, So thank you all for that.

Speaker 4 (35:49):
We appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (35:50):
Well, there is one way we can thank our very
loyal listeners, Kyle, you know how we can do that.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
Yeah, take it easy on Miles Bridges. I'm just kidding. Ahead,
I'm just kidding.

Speaker 4 (35:59):
I'll tell that to mellow ball. Uh.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
Anyway, So what we're gonna do is we're gonna have
a family four pack giveaway to Charlotte f c's crucial
Game three does Friday against nyc FC.

Speaker 4 (36:09):
All you have to do.

Speaker 3 (36:10):
Is text the word zaha z A h A two
to Fandle text line and enter your chance to win
a family four pack to Fridays do or Die Game
three between Charlotte f C and in NYCFC. If Charlotte
wentz Kyle, it'll be the first playoff series they've ever
won as a young franchise.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
Yeah, and the first playoff win for anybody in Charlotte since.

Speaker 4 (36:34):
The twenty fifteen. Well, hang on, hangout.

Speaker 3 (36:36):
Well, actually earlier is here because the checkers, oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
don't don't.

Speaker 4 (36:39):
We don't want to piss off JJ Jansen, who's.

Speaker 2 (36:42):
As much as we love them, I do feel like
we have to play like that's that's minor league hockey.
It's great hockey. It's a lot of fun. But we're
talking about the you know what I mean, you know
what I'm geting at here he gave us.

Speaker 4 (36:51):
I'm not doing.

Speaker 2 (36:52):
I'm just saying there's a slightly different classification.

Speaker 4 (36:55):
That's all I'm pointing out.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
And I hope what if you want to go professional
will go to It's still national, but it's like it's,
you know, the major leagues.

Speaker 4 (37:02):
That's what I'm talking about. JJ. I had your back,
even though I.

Speaker 3 (37:05):
Know I probably can't tell time back, even though I
still can't pronounce confidently your hockey team in Greensbro's name,
which I'm not going to do. But we're going back
to the last time it did involve JJ was a
twenty fifteen NFC championship.

Speaker 2 (37:19):
G Okay, there you go, so again, what's the word
they text in? Give us a zaha z a h
a text only the word zaha to get in if
you want to win a pair of tickets to see
Charlotte FC NYCFC Family four Pack. Correct me on Friday
text zaja z a h A and again while we wait,
we had Ronnie the Panther fan, ask about the Panthers

(37:43):
working out a cornerback.

Speaker 4 (37:44):
They are doing that.

Speaker 2 (37:46):
Asante Samuel Junior is working out with the Carolina Panthers
this week. He is expected to visit multiple teams, including
the Vikings and the Packers, if memory serves, but Dave
Canalyis was asked about this earlier today and straight up
acknowledged that Mike I think Mike Kay was the guy
to bring the question up to him.

Speaker 3 (38:06):
Well, Mikey was the first one to break the story
out of anyone, that's right, even beat the Jordan schultzays,
Adam Schefters of the world.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
Adam Boy, Mike Kay. He was the first to report it.
So they brought a Sante Samuel Junior in for a visit.
I think when Dave was asked about it earlier today,
I was watching the press conference live, he had said
he they hadn't worked out yet, but they had spoken.
He mentioned that Samuel, who's a former second round pick
of the Chargers, cleared to return to the field after

(38:32):
undergoing a spinal fusion procedure during the off season. And
you know, Canals pointing out that he's played in this
scheme before said quote, all those things just a part
of our process. When there's guys out there that are
coming back from injuries that are ready to go, let's
look at all of them. And you never know, it's
a long season, so just keeping all of our options open.
And Samuel, since being drafted in twenty twenty one, has

(38:56):
started in forty seven of his career fifty games in
the NFL. He appeared in just four games in twenty
twenty four before he sustained a season enduring shoulder injury,
and according to the aforementioned Jordan Schultz NFL Insider, he
is expected to also meet with the Packers and the
Minnesota Viking. So, you know, you and I yesterday were
talking about the trade deadline and you know what the

(39:19):
Panthers might or might not do. They ended up not
doing anything, but we also brought up that you know,
there are players on the street that still could potentially
help this team over the next several weeks. We didn't
know quite who they'd be looking at. But a Sante
Samuel Junior is apparently one of those guys makes you wonder,
you know, looking at the if you're coming off the
street and you want to play, right, how much more

(39:42):
attractive were the Panthers today, obviously than they were four
weeks ago, five weeks ago? Is it potentially a more
attractive situation for a Sante Samuel Junior now, you know,
than it was a couple of weeks ago. Is it
potentially more attractive to him than Green But I don't
know about Green Bay. I mean they got Michael Parsons,
Rashaun Gary. I know the Panthers just beat them. That's
a legit, you know, playoff team. So what are we

(40:04):
gonna do? You want to hit a break here? What
do we need to do? What do you think? We
got Tom calling in? Let's hit a break?

Speaker 4 (40:08):
All right?

Speaker 2 (40:08):
Tom Boger called in. We're running a little bit late here.
We'll we'll stop this for a moment. We'll hit a
quick commercial break. We'll come back. We'll spend a few
minutes with Tom Bogert of the Athletic Charlotte FC NYCFC
on Friday. We'll get to him. Next Sports Radio ninety
