Speaker 2 (00:27):
Good afternoon, Queen City Sports Radio ninety two seven wf
n Z. Back on a Thursday, creeping toward the weekend.
Thursday Night football is back tonight, College and professional and
NFC eastbouts on Amazon. We got Eagles and Giants. We'll
touch on that coming up in just a bit.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Lots. Why did you make that?
Speaker 2 (00:48):
I can't even get through the opening monologue and you're
looking at me like that face? Why are you so
grossed out by Eagles and Giants over there smoking not.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
To Eagles, but Giants, shacks and dark coming off a
loss against the Saints. Look, the only good thing about
tonight's game is most likely gonna be We're gonna get
very grumpy and perturbed al Michaels tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Okay, but that's only charming. For so long, it was
just funny. All I did was mention the game, and
it looked like somebody hot boxed you in a car
and wouldn't roll the windows down. The look on your
face was pretty awful over there? Is that one of
those things that people pretend to like in sports that
they don't actually like? Thursday Night NFL Primetime Amazon Football?
Is that one of those? In fact, that is a
question that I'm asking today something, What are things in sports?
(01:32):
Give me one thing in sports that you think people
only pretend to like? Seven oh four five, seven ninety
six to ten. It's a theme question. In today's show,
we got Actual Football to talk about Michael Felder's coming
up in forty five minutes. We got Charles Lee back
at five o'clock, horn itt Head coaches with us, and
Willie p In at four twenty five. We'll talk about
Charlotte FC, among other things. But is that one of
(01:54):
those things in sports? Thursday Night Pro Football that people
only pretend to What do you think of something in
sports smoke that people only pretend to like but in reality,
like ninety percent of people actually hate that thing?
Speaker 3 (02:04):
What is it? Parody?
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Oh God, that's a good answer. Parody's a good answer. Well,
I keep going elaborate. Why why do you say that?
Speaker 4 (02:11):
Well, people say they want to have more teams in
the title hunt and want to contend, But when that happens.
You see the viewership. I know we you know some
people like, oh, why are you talking about viewership? But
I'm just going on a broader audience. Viewership when you
have more parody is down most of the time. And
we say the NFL loves parody, but they love parody
to keep them into the hunt until you get to
the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Then they want the big teams to win. Okay, Like
I mean, you know the.
Speaker 4 (02:35):
NFL wasn't complaining and whatsoever with the Chiefs potentially going
three straight Super Bowl See, because the truth is, you
love to see teams dominate or you'd love to hate
see teams dominate. And whenever you have a team that
is a dynasty or close to a dynasty, you want
to watch them ever win or lose because we all
love greatness.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Prime example, look at the NBA in the seventies. It
was on tape delay when Magic won his first championship
because of how much parody there was in the seventies.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
And then you get to Magic Bird MJ.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
When has the NBA been most successful when there's been
a dynasty.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Okay, now listen, I love that answer, I really do.
Text has already blown us up on this. The question is,
what is something in sports? What's one thing in sports
that you think people only pretend to like that in reality,
like ninety percent of people really dislike that thing. They
only pretend to like that thing. Seven oh four, five,
seven ninety six ten, seven oh four numbers just said
any form of all star games last weekend. I the
(03:31):
only that is definitely not true of baseball. For me,
I still deeply enjoy the Midsummer Classic getting all the
best players together on the same field. I still really
like that because I do think they all compete. Now
it is a little bit different because guys aren't pitching
multiple innings. There's no World Series home field advantage on
the line, So yeah, I get it. But still there's
(03:51):
not that driving incentive because that really was an incentive,
even if it was a silly one, it was an incentive.
Guys wanted to win that game. But yeah, the NBA
All Star Game has become unbearable bad. The Pro Bowl
that's over. We know what that was, or is or
isn't really NHL's All Star Game though, wasn't We had
the four Nations, which I thought was absolutely incredible, But
it doesn't exactly fit the mold of the traditional All
(04:12):
Star format. So yeah, I think I'll accept that answer,
even though I would exempt Major League Baseball's Midsummer Classic
from those that list of all star games that.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
In NASCAR, even though they haven't been the best, just
because you're racing for a million dollars, even if you're
not getting to full million.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Yeah, so yeah, you're still racing for money, So I'd
say that.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
But the outside of those two or three, yeah, Like,
I don't I forget the last time I really cared
about the Pro Bowl.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Okay, all right, the thing in sports that people only
pretend to like seven oh four, five, seven ninety six ten,
T Time is with you and Tea Time said parody
is a great answer, to be honest, that's a great answer.
Smoke you might have. You're in the early lead for
the best answer so far. I got one locally. I
don't know how this will play with you or anybody else,
Sweet Caroline. After football all wins a Bank of America Stadium,
(05:01):
don't throw something at me. Don't don't throw anything at me, please,
I actually agree with if you agree with me.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Yeah, Like I've been noticing that the Panthers they start
put over the past couple of years, when they've won,
they start playing the song Sweet Victory. I think that'd
be better than Sweet Caroline. It's just better, like to
the problem with Sweet Caroline, in my opinion is, you know, look,
I make so many name and joke puns. Oh Caroline,
Sweet Caroline. Oh, it's too slow of a song. Man.
(05:29):
You know, it doesn't really get me all like, yeah,
you know, it just takes too long. The only thing
that's really worth it is but uh, that's really the
only thing that's worth it. And look, I'm a Red
Sox fan. I like it as a Red Sox fan. Yeah,
but I could I could take it. The song itself
is fine. There's nothing wrong with the song.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
It's just to me.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
And I understand we'll get those people that have said,
look how long it's been around here versus that's fine.
I just I will always in forever a associate it
with Boston and be it's just not that cool to
play at the end of the like, you could just
do so much better. And I realized that the Canes
have stolen this, But I mean there's the fact that
the Canes took but like it still should be pet
Would there be a lawsuit if the Panthers played Pete
(06:12):
Pablo at the end of a win, because there shouldn't
be like that should be like, there's no way that
they could do that. You can't sue somebody else over
using somebody else's I mean, maybe there's a contract. I
don't know, but it would still wrong. Like, there's no
Can we share custody of pd Poblo? Please, just for
the purposes of celebrating wins in this in the pro
sports venues in the state of North Carolina, can we
all just agree to show up at QT at a
(06:33):
scheduled time and share pd Pablo, share custody of pet
Pablo at the end of wins. Be it the Panthers,
the Hornets, the Canes, I don't care if it's the FC,
the Assent, any other, the Independence, the Checkers, like everybody
ought to be able to play Pete Pablo at the
end of a win in the state of North Carolina.
It should just be like a state anthem. It should
be state law that everybody gets to play that and
(06:54):
the state has to pay pd Pablo royalties for the
rest of his life.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
The only problem is a lot of the counties he
mentions in that song are from the eastern side of
the state.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
That's true. You don't hear him saying Burke.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
County, hick Greeka, Lincoln County, Shelby, Cleveland County, a shield,
what's up there?
Speaker 3 (07:12):
You don't hear him mention it. It's a lot of
the cities around rawlegh Trangle.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
I'm laughing at you, but I'm also laughing at the
seven oh four number. Who is big Mad says respectfully,
f y'all for hating on Sweet Caroline? Are we hating
on it? Or are we simply saying that it nobody
really likes it as much as some people claim to.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Like.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
There's you, you're mad, and I understand it.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
You have a right to your feelings, and I will
be here with you as you work through them. But
I don't think it's disrespectful to say that it's it's
not that cool, Like I just it's not that. You
could do way cooler than Sweet Caroline at the end
of a football win at Bank of America Stadium, And
even even if it's not Pete Pablo, you could come
up with something else. That's all I'm saying. That's all
I'm saying seven four five, seven ninety six ten.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
I mean, I've never seen anyone defend Neil Diamond like that,
says the cast of Saving Silverman.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Let's see or CP in Mount Holly says KB. It's
funny you say that because my wife just said on
Sunday that the Panthers are still playing the same TD
song after double digit years.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Boom boom boom.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
No no no, no, no no no, that's a little
too far. Come on, that's pretty awesome. Okay, I'm my man.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Thomas says he thinks that Sweet Caroline should be played
at the end of the third quarter.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Listen, you can play it if you want to. I don't.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
I just don't know why it's the end of game
anthem song after a win when you could just do
so much better. Seven O four Numbers says Sweet Caroline's great.
We get to hear it three times a year. I mean,
that's that's more. That's it's sad, but yeah, it's kain
of partly accurate these last several years.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
What song? So, I don't know if you've noticed. I
think I've told you.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
It's been a decade since I've been inside Bank of
America Stadium there to panthers.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
I still can't believe that because I've been working.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
I know, I know, I know, you work all the
time and you're down the street and you still because
of what you do, you still take it all in
really on a deeper level than most people because you're
listening and watching and cutting up the audio and a
part of the interviews and talking to coaches on the
so like you're really like deep in it.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
But it is the flip side of that is, yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
You're not down the street in the stadium on Sundays,
and we're going to change that soon.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
By the way, when did they get rid of down
with the Sickness as the intro song? I don't know,
because he used to come out with the instrumental of course,
because they're not playing the actual lyrical version of the
Sturbs down to the Sickness, but they used to come
out to that. I'm not going to do it because
it'll just be so bad. Yeah, but you know the
it gets you into a mood when you hear when
(09:34):
you hear.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
The okay, I love doing that.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
So I've had several people on the text line already
tell me they think the Army Navy Game is the
answer to this question. Shut up, hold on, hold on,
because I as as as the resident Army Navy game expert,
who will be there again this year in Baltimore, I've
been to many of these now at this point, I
think the Army Navy Game should be on everybody's bucket list.
I think everyone should go to the Army Navy game.
(10:00):
If you're a college football fan. I'm not saying that
it has to be a top your bucket list, but like,
if you ever get invited or if you're ever you know,
offered tickets, you should go because it's unlike any other
game you've ever seen. And watching the march on, watching
them get into formation, watching the singing at the end
of the game, you know, just the way that both
you know, the well, the way that the entire stadium
(10:22):
fills out, first and foremost just the atmosphere inside of it,
but the way that the cadets and the midshipman, the
way they celebrate and act and you know, just get
to cut loose and let loose in their respective or
sections during the game. It's so totally worth it. Right
and then, and this is not political, all right, but
This is just the way like when you get you
get a president in there, you get a defense secretary
in there, you get Hell. When I went in Philadelphia
(10:43):
years ago, in a span of like ten minutes, I
walked by President Trump, Mad Dog Mattis, and Marky Mark
Mark Wahlberg, Like you just you don't know who's showing
up at that game. So it's a very It's unlike
almost any other atmosphere that you'll ever experience. Now, if
you don't like option football, Okay, if that's not really
your thing, maybe you don't want to go every year.
I get again, settle down. But if you don't love
(11:05):
that brand of football, and you do, you wouldn't want
to go every year or even watch it every year. Okay,
I get that, But I still think that it is
absolutely worth going at least once to see what it's
all about. Because I didn't I didn't grow up in
that game. I didn't play in that game. But the
first one I went to nearly a decade ago, it
was like, oh my god.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
This is awesome. Wasn't it a snow game? Oh yeah,
it was like one of the best Army Navy.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
It was the year that Army broke out their snow
camo uniforms and we weren't even sure that it was Like,
of course that was pre planned, and nobody even knew
that it was going to snow, and we end up with,
you know, three four inches of snow on the ground.
So it was incredible as armies in those army snow
camo uniforms and all that takes place, just incredible. So
if you're just tune again, hold that thought. The question
to start the show is, what is the thing in
(11:46):
sports that you think most people only pretend to like
but really dislike seven oh four or five, seven oh
ninety six ten? What is that thing that you think
people only pretend to like in sports? Scott, the UFL
Hawks had Enter Sandman and he's now officially blocked. On
the text line, Brian says, football on Christmas. That's difficult
(12:08):
for me because it was very strange to watch football
on Christmas. It was I'm accustomed to watching the NBA
on Christmas. Some of this, I think is what we're
conditioned to watch and what we grew up on. So
like I grew up believing that it was normal for
the NBA to play on Christmas Day, as a kid,
I got to wake up, open presence, hang out with
(12:31):
the family, play with my new toys, and then shortly
after lunch I got to watch Michael Jordan drop thirty
on Somebody like just. That was Christmas Day for me
growing up on NBC. And so yeah, in some ways,
I guess it is strange, although it's still big time sports.
So how weird is it? I don't know, what do
you think about it?
Speaker 4 (12:49):
It doesn't feel natural having this one, especially because Christmas
Day can follow any day of the week, you know,
and it just doesn't feel natural like NBA watching it
on Christmas Day. If it's on the Fursday, yeah that
makes sense. If it's on a Wednesday or Tuesday, yeah
it makes sense. It's just natural, and I think it
flows a lot better when you watch basketball for twelve
hours straight. I don't watch it for the full twelve hours,
(13:10):
but to have it on the background. There's been a
lot of great Christmas moments, even in the last decade,
a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Games that people don't really talk about as much.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
So even though in the NFL is gonna take over Christmas,
I'm always going to associate NBA on Christmas Day. It's
just like if anyone tries to overcome you know, the
NFL on college on Thanksgiving Thursday, it's not gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Now, I will tell you this.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
I'm still pissed off that we don't have the egg
Ball on Thursday night anymore on Thanksgiving. That ticks me off?
Does it? Yes, the egg Bowl on Thursday night was glorious,
It was amazing. Football is honestly some of the best
football that you'd have on Thanksgiving Day, and now don't
we don't have it on Thanksgiving night anymore.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
It just it ticks me off. It ticks me off.
It ticks me off.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
Like one of the greatest college football games ever was
that Egg Bowl in twenty nineteen when Allies more mimicked
a dog using the restroom and then it essentially led
to Lank Kiffen and Mike Leech getting to jobs in
the state of Mississippi. How can you not love the
egg Ball? The egg ball badly for the egg Now,
I'm with you on that.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
I'm also surprised at the number of people who are
simply texting in Lebron James. I mean, look, we're getting
a lot of really good specific answers on this right now,
and I want to get to these. But I'm a
little bit surprised by just how many people are simply
saying Lebron James. But you know what, after that whole
hennessy ad thing, I totally get it. I try not
(14:35):
to be a hater. I'm a talking head for a living.
You know, he's got thirty thousand plus points in the NBA,
several championship rings, probably a billion dollar well not probably,
you know, billion dollar plus networth. He's successful by every metric.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
So I don't know.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
I don't like doing the hater thing, but I've tried
with that guy. I've tried, I have. I know he's
not I don't think he's a bad person necessarily. I'm
not trying to plain him like that, but I do
think he's the mo annoying and obnoxious superstar in my lifetime.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Really, he's got to be.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
He's got to be the most obnoxious and annoying superstar
in my lifetime. Not a horrible guy, never been in
bad trouble, never never gave the league a black eye.
You know, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna paint it
any other way than fair. When it comes to him
as a dude. But like that Hennessy thing. Dude, I
haven't even wanted to talk about it this week because
it's so annoying and I don't even know what I'm
(15:25):
good with. It's not even that I thought he was
going to retire. I figure something was up, but I
didn't know. I also didn't think that hard about it
because I didn't care that much, but that it being
a Hennessy ad was just the cherry on top of
reasons to be annoyed by Lebron James. And it was
so corny and it was so stupid. Everything about it
was bad.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
I get.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
So I do get people texting in Lebron James as
the thing that people pretend to like in sports but
they really don't. In fact, my own father just texted
me that. Now that I look down, my own dad
just texted me the exact same thing. So is there
anybody who wasn't annoyed or at least thought was stupid
that that decision part two Hennessy ad.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
That whole thing was a clown show.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Uh, yeah, it was stupid, but I never bought into it.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
And if you know, I saw someone's already suing Lebron
James and the Lakers because someone was so much of
a mark they did. They were already planning to buy
tickets for the last Lakers game of the year to
go watch Lebron James potentially playing his last game. And
now he's asking for the money back. So congrats, Mark,
you got played. So yeah, it just I don't really care.
(16:29):
And here's the thing. For all the people that were
complaining about Coach K's retirement tour, Derek Jeter's retirement tour,
this retirement tour to Lebron. Whenever that day comes, he's
going to go to it's going to be the most
insufferable retirement yes, all.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Time, easily easily uh seven oh four numbers mad at
me again, he says, you don't like doing the hater thing,
but you just bleeped on Sweet Caroline just ten minutes ago.
Well they're not the same, and you know that you
want to play Sweet Caroline in the building at some
point during a game five, go right ahead and do that.
But as the celebratory saw him to end the game
after a win, you could.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Do much better. That's the most boomer thing ever.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Seven four five, seven ninety six ten hit us up
on the FanDuel text line, what is the one thing
in sports that you think people only pretend to like
but the majority actually intensely dislikes that thing.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
We'll come back. We'll talk about that.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Hornets back in action tonight preseason game number two. Lots
of Panthers to get to as well. Sports Radio ninety
two to seven WFNZ, North Carolina. Stand up for what
(17:40):
you believe? What's something in sports that you think most
people secretly or just really dislike but pretend to like
in public? Seven four, five, seven of ninety six ten.
The answers so far have been pretty fantastic. We really
did get sidetracked on this this week Caroline thing there
for a minute, but I think Smoke is still in
the lead with the best answer of all. He said,
and I think that's a great answer. Now I'm the
(18:02):
one that brought up sweet Caroline at the end of
Panthers games. Most people seem to agree, but there are
two or three people who vehemently disagree. So I will
say you are clearly outnumbered, at least on our text line.
And apparently I missed it. Smoke said it was the
most boomer song ever, to which two or three people
were upset mos City Jacker saying, why you gotta hate
on boomers? You're nothing without us. If by that you
(18:24):
mean you gave birth to our generation, then I guess
that's technically true. But it's also because, and I can
only speak for the millennials out there, we had to
listen to you Bozo's crap on us for years on end,
and we still turned out just great. So you gotta
if you're gonna dish it out, you got to take it.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
That's how I see it. Boomers.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
I don't hate you, but you know, you'd spent a
lot of years talking a lot of trash about millennials
and looking around. We're doing all right, So we have
to do college debt. Where's your college debt? Huh? Yeah,
you're sixty three thousand dollars four thousand square foot house.
Yeah yeah, sort of thing. Tea Time said, yeah, I
(19:02):
love Lebron James, but he is definitely an a tension seeker.
Lebron James was the answer to a lot of this
this this question on the text line, A lot of
people said, Lebron James. I was a little bit surprised
by that little bit surprised seven four five, seven ninety six.
I shouldn't be, I guess, but I didn't think that
many people would send it in TC says the WNBA.
(19:24):
Lots of there. There have been several people too saying
the WNBA. I think I haven't. I mean, I know
the ratings conversation triggers some people, but I don't know
how the ratings ended up for the WNBA this year.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
Well, season still on, going to finals, I know.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
But what I'm saying is like after Caitlyn Clark went down,
I'm pretty sure there was a precipitous drop in the ratings.
I don't know if they've rebounded at all. I haven't looked,
to be quite honest with.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
You, Well, right now, I don't even know if there's
gonna be a season right now next year, based on
what's been happening with the players and management, specifically cathl
Engelbart and the commissioner.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
I did see that press conference last week. Well, yer, yes,
that was pre pretty awkward, pretty awkward. Oh, here's a
good answer. Several people have said preseason football, Now, that's
not a new discussion, but you know, I do believe
that we love preseason football mostly because it only signals
the return of actual football. I think, yeah, you agree
(20:17):
with that, huh, Because it just signals the return of
actual football.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
I mean, the only thing preseason that is even somewhat
watchable is back in the days when I would watch
high school football and you go to jamborees. At least
that's a lot more fun because it's only one half
and it's a lot more loose. But preseason football in
the NFL it's needed, don't get me wrong. And you know,
less and less teams are making it useful, which is
not great. And I think that's why the product for
(20:43):
the first month of the year for the last five
years has really kind of been sluggish.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
But it's a necessary evil of sorts.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Okay, As it relates to somebody said the NFL on
Christmas during the first segment of the show there, and
we debated that back and forth for a minute. Followed
up and said it might feel weird, because to me,
it does feel weird. I grew up with the NBA
on Christmas Day being normal. The NFL on Christmas Day.
I'm not mad about it. I just it doesn't feel right.
It doesn't actually feel like Christmas when there's football on.
(21:13):
I'm not saying it ruins anything. It just was never
the norm for the first couple of decades of my life.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
He says. It might feel weird.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
Let's be real, it's freaking awesome just having a crap
ton of sports on now with the NFL, which is king.
So give me NFL on any day and that day
gets better. Yeah. I mean, if you like football, you're
going to watch it. I certainly had the games on
last year, and I don't know, I think we certainly
talked about it after it happened, because the NFL did
blast the NBA off of Christmas Day in terms of
(21:40):
the numbers of people watching. So the NFL on Christmas
Day is not going anywhere. It's just going to take
some time for many of us to actually get used
to it. The library guy says the universal DH. Now,
let me tell you something. You could not be more
wrong about that. I grew up on pitchers hitting. I
never needed to see pitchers hit. I never needed it.
(22:00):
Was it a fun peculiarity, you know? Was it a
great little story from time to time? If you know,
Mike Hampton barreled up one and hit a ball out
in Colorado. Yeah it was fun. You know if if
Greg Maddox or Tom Glavin got a hit, yeah it
was neat. It's fun on Sports Center highlights. But I
don't need to see pitchers hit. I don't know anybody
who needs to for the longest time, those of us.
(22:20):
And this doesn't apply to Smoke because he's a Red
Sox fan. He's an AL guy. But for those of
us in the National League, you know, we talked about
how superior the baseball was in the National League because hey,
you got to manage around the pitcher spot. In the
American League, you don't have to deal with that. They
have a designated hitter. Okay, in Hell's there's more managing
going on over there. You got to find a way
(22:41):
around that. You got to make more defensive switches, you
got to do this and that and the other. And
it was true, But it didn't mean that I ever
really wanted to watch pitchers hit. So I can't imagine
Smoke that you're as an AL guy in any way,
shape or form. Upset by the arrival of the universal
designated hitter. A couple of years ago. Oh damn, time
you guys woke up.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
There you go, that's your answer.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
A few more of the seven oh four five seven
ninety six to ten Battlehawk Nation says Tom Brady, which
is funny, but I'm not sure that it's true because
plenty of people openly hate on Tom Brady. There was
a few more that there was one in particular that
I just missed a minute ago that I thought was
really funny. Oh, I gotta find this. Oh man, uh,
let's see, Sweet Caroline is still getting banged on right
(23:21):
now a lot, like a lot, a lot, Jake Paul
catching a lot of strays?
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Doesn't everyone hate Jake Paul? I thought so too, Yeah,
I thought Jake.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
I thought most people kind of disliked Jake, Like they
acknowledge his marketing genius and the fact that he's made
a lot of money and helped boxing kind of stay relevant.
But does anybody actually like Jake Paul? I kind of
thought that was the majority viewpoint on him. So seven
oh four number, by the way, saying KB, it's not
about pitchers hitting, it's about the strategy. Yeah, but you
(23:52):
don't how many times have you shown up to the
ball game and been like, man, I'm so glad I'm
here for this strategy you haven't. Oh yeah, you want
to see pitchers pitch and hitters hit. That's what we
all want to see.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
I mean, you have the.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
Rare picture that actually can hit, like you know Madison
Bumgarner or your Carlos Zambrano. And yeah, sure, I love
watching every time a chance I get the bartolokalo On
home run against the Padres in twenty sixteen. But they're
so rare, and it's just so pointless that you have
to go through so much slash. It's like, oh, this
is an automatic out. We just go ahead and lay
(24:26):
the sack bunt just maybe try to get one and plays.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
It's not useful at.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
All, It's not somebody eight six four numbers said the
Super Bowl halftime show. Well, it's a fun conversation right
now with bad Bunny. I never cared that much about it,
to be honest with you. There've been some good ones,
and there have been some legendary ones. There's been the
nip slip, there's been.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
That's what's a little different for me because you grew
up in an air in the nineties where it was
still kind of not really sure what it was supposed
to be.
Speaker 3 (24:59):
Because you had to Michael Jackson.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
But then you had like I think Garth Brooks and
like Disney on Ice doing a halftime show in Atlanta.
There are a lot of weird halftime shows still in
the nineties, and it didn't really start to become a
thing until the early two thousands. Okay, the first one
I saw was Super Bowl thirty seven, so that was
Shania Twain, that Shanna Twain. But I also it kind
(25:24):
of changed for me and was different for me because
the second one I watched was the N's Nip Slip
and that was the big, one of the biggest pop
culture events in two thousand and four. Yeah, that was
an election year. You know how hard it is to
do that.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
It was just different in the nineties two because you
couldn't just because now if I can just skip it,
like I'll catch it on Twitter tomorrow morning, you know
what I mean. Yeah, I couldn't do that in nineteen
ninety seven. So there there was like a curiosity and
the understanding that if you didn't watch it live, the
best you were gonna get was watching some clips of
it on the news, right or maybe if you had
(25:58):
a cable channel that was possibly replaying it. And maybe
you'd see it there.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
But yeah, and even if you saw it on the news,
it was like b Rolls was actually hearing.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
You wouldn't actually hear it, and you'd get to maybe
get ten to fifteen seconds of it because the copyright
stuff was a problem too. But in nineteen ninety seven
ninety eight, if you didn't watch it live, there was
a chance you wouldn't get to see it at all.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
So there, you know.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Now people can be like, eh, Like, I'll be honest
with you. I not a Bad Bunny guy. I know
he's got some some like songs that are you know,
really popular. He's not my company. I'm not interested.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
It's not your music.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Yeah, but I know what the NFL's doing. The NFL's
courting a younger audience. Like this guy surpassed Taylor Swift
in total streams a couple of years ago. I don't
know if she took her crown back. I have no idea.
I just remember a couple of years ago saying that
Bad Bunny had sur passed Taylor Swift on Spotify or
maybe all of them Apple Music too and total streams,
and it was a really big deal. And that's cool,
and so we know what the NFL's doing. I get it.
It's a marketing play. They're trying to cultivate younger fans.
(26:52):
The average age of an NFL fan, I still think
is like forty eight years old, so they're trying to
get younger and that sort of thing. But like, in
terms of Bad Bunny and who he is and his
new like, I couldn't care less, Like I'm but I'm
not mad about it.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Yeah, like I'm not. I don't think it halftimes obvious
what they're doing.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Not the biggest fan of Bad Bunny, but I also
know that Bad Bunny makes a lot of money. Bad
Bunny's literally everywhere. Bad Bunny is in a lot of movies.
I don't know if you've noticed it. I know he
was in Happy Gilmour, he was in Uh. I didn't
know that until it was pointed out to me after
I watched it. But yeah, do you ever see the
movie Bullet Trained with Brad Pitt.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (27:21):
No, he was in Bullet Trained, which is, by the way,
great movie. You need to watch that.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
And you know he's been He's hosted SNL a couple times,
and heck, he's been in wrestling. You know he he
had a match at Wrestlemannia and it was actually really good.
He's actually a really good wrestler. Hecky was in the
same ring at one time as brock Lesnar. He got
f five by brock Lessner. Really yeah, how about that?
He never looked smaller in his life?
Speaker 3 (27:42):
How about that? All right?
Speaker 2 (27:43):
Is a bum, says you old man KB. His era
is next level and he has the riz no cap.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
I don't know he's gen Z sling, but yeah he
does have aura. That's the kids say.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Yeah, Okay, that sounds debatable to me anyway. Michael Felder
coming up up in ten minutes. Former Tar Heel defensive
back east mech Eagle and college football analyst Learfield College
Sports Now podcast hand in the Dirt podcast. He is
well connected in Chapel Hill. He studies the tape in
college football. Michael Felder back in ten minutes, will get
his thoughts on. Of course, the latest out of Chapel Hill,
(28:17):
which we have you know, obviously avoided in the first
thirty five minutes of this show. We'll dive into it
with Michael Felder. Some of the big games coming up
this weekend as well. I want to play some of
what Greg Olsen had to say this morning on The
Mack and Bone Show. Thought it was a fantastic segment.
We'll talk about Greg Olsen's thoughts on the game this weekend.
He'll be calling that with Adam Aman on Fox and
(28:39):
as of right now, Adam Aman is scheduled to join
me on the show tomorrow, although he's in the middle
of calling Major League Baseball playoffs on Fox, so we're
gonna have to figure out how to make that work.
But our buddy Adam Aman, who is also the television
play by play voice of the Chicago Bulls, is expected
to stop in tomorrow, so we'll get both halves of
the Fox Sports broadcast on the show today and tomorrow
(29:00):
or here on wfn Z, so we'll get to all that.
And a Bryce Young Dax Prescott comparison that I know
you're you really want to talk about.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Why does that fire you up so much?
Speaker 4 (29:08):
I just find it interesting because while if you say
that the peak of Bryce Young is Dak Prescott, I
think it does sound underwhelming, But I also feel like too,
Dak Prescott has helped keep the Cowboys above water in
a lot of seasons, and the prime example, looked back
to the COVID year when he got hurt in the
fourth game and what happened afterwards.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
They were a mess.
Speaker 4 (29:30):
Now they were a little bit better last year with
Cooper Rush replacing him. But I just think, you know,
Dak is, while he has his flaws, he arguably has been,
you know, really the thing that keeps Dallas in a
hunt most years. And I think a lot of that
has to do with just Jerry mismanaging, kind of like
how Romo. He put up a lot of great numbers,
but it was it wasn't capitalized on by Jerry in
(29:52):
the front office just because they didn't do the best
to put the team around him. And Jerry's flaw has
always been, you know, being horrendous at negotiations, prime example,
Michael Parson's earlier this year. Now was a little bit
different with Tony because they were just dumb trades left
and right, like trading for pac Man Jones, trading for
Roy Williams wide receiver not his safety.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
Well, let me let me stop you there, though, just
in terms of isn't it always gonna be for some people? Though, Like, hey,
if Bryce becomes Dak, is that good enough? Or is
that good like no, because for most people, they're going
to say, well, Dak was a fourth round pick and
Bryce was not only the number one overall pick, but
you met that had that massive tray with Chicago to
go get him. So for some people, it's just gonna
stop and end right there.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
Now.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Is that right? Is that fair? Is that the way
we should look at it? We can and probably will
debate that coming up in just a bit. But you know,
Dak was a fourth round pick out of Mississippi State
and Bryce was the number one overall pick. So people
are going to, I think rightfully and understandably hold him
to a much much higher standard. Seven oh four five,
seven oh ninety six to ten hit us up on
the fan duel text line, far more bad bunny text
(30:56):
than I would have anticipated. In this conversation. We may
or may not come back to some of those, but
I'll tell you what. Michael Felder coming up in about
seven minutes. Right now, we go to smoke on the headlines.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
Who is smoke? Where is smoke? Where there's smoke, there's fire.
Let's go what's the latest. All right?
Speaker 4 (31:17):
First off, this report is brought to you by bet
three six' five and The panther's latest injury report has come.
Out per everyone that covers the, beat But Jalen cocher
was a full participant in practice along With Mike jackson
and J. T, sanders a full participant after being a
limited participant. Yesterday Shaw Smith wade also a full participant
(31:38):
after missing last week due to the jest. Injury the
bad news, though it looks Like Turf wharton's gonna miss
another week with that two, injury so that's not. Great
Schuba hubbard also did not participate with The. Cap feels
like they still could be trying to be safe with.
Him as of this, moment the only edit name that
was on the list that did not Participate Taylor. Moten
But i'm believing it's it's, elbow but it's probably still
(32:01):
rest With.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
Taylor, yeah we're going to go back through this in
just a. BIT i think he'll be. Okay, yeah based
on his his, history his, past he's a tough. Guy
man had that Iron man streak snap just last last.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
Year, yeah last.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
Year if he can physically, go he'll. GO i believe.
That the rest of, it, Though, man you'd love to Have.
CHEW i know they just ran all Over, Miami but
you'd really like to Have cuba out there On, sunday
like you need as many of your offensive weapons at
your disposal as. Possible what was the latest On sanders,
too by the, way what was that a full? Participant
well that gets. Me, yeah well he was a limited.
(32:37):
Yesterday's now he's a.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
Fool so basically what they're waiting for is just to
see how he responds tomorrow against the Old jews is
flowing and he could be back For sunday's.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
GAME i know people will tell me maybe that you,
Know Mitchell evans has a couple of touchdowns And Tommy,
trump BUT i WANT. J. T sanders out, There LIKE
i still believe he's the best tight end on this,
team best pass catching tight end on this.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
TEAM i want him out.
Speaker 4 (32:56):
There And Shaw Smith wade looks like coming back to
that also helps as.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
Well is this destined to be a? Shootout can The
panthers defense slow? DOWN i mean the fact that That
dallas went out there and hung what was, it forty two.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
Thirty?
Speaker 2 (33:10):
Seven i'm sorry they could have gotten the fifty if
they really want, NO i, know and they did it
without four starting offensive linemen and ceedee. Lamb So i'm
a little worried about The panthers defense hanging. It they've
got to get after the. Quarterback they've got to Hit
dac On sunday. One just the offense has been on
fire for basically the whole entire year For. Dallas, yeah all,
Right Michael felder, next we'll see what he. Thinks how
bad is it In Chapel. Hill he's well. Connected we'll
(33:31):
talk about. It Sports radio ninety two SEVEN. Wfnz excuse, Me.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
I'm.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Sorry we're trying to get ahold Of Michael felder AND
i started choking on coffee As i'm Sending michael the hotline.
Number APPARENTLY i don't know what's going on with our
phone system. Lately it's not the engineer's. FAULT i think
IT'S at and t's fault for some, reason out of the,
blue when we started calling guests from our hotline, numbers
it will show up as spam and automatically get knocked
into people's. Voicemail and it is. Infuriating and we've never
(34:29):
had to deal with this. Before and NOW i NEED
Dvr dave to come save the day like he did
a couple of years. Ago with our phone. Line remember
what was it two years? Ago they told us that
our phones might be down for weeks or months on,
end AND Dvr dave came to the rescue and hassled
at AND t until they fixed it. All so, YEAH
i might NEED Dvr dave back on the case here pretty.
Soon but we're trying to Call Michael felder talk To
(34:51):
mike this, morning Former tarheel defensive back east Mech eagle
and the college football, analyst and it's going straight to
voicemail when we call. Him so we're trying to get
that that sorted, out trying to Get mike to call.
Us we'll try to get. Connected it's a weird situation right.
NOW i will throw out there because of course we
intend to talk About Bill belichick and what's going on
In Chapel. Hill how about the last night the statement
(35:13):
from Unc. ATHLETICS i, mean can we get more than a, sentence?
GUYS i Mean Bill belichick And Bubba cunningham releasing a
statement last night that really didn't amount to anything to me,
anyway more than we can't agree on a buy out.
Yet that's what it looks like to, me If i'm being,
honest with. You it was almost Like Dwight shrewd, SAYING
i state my regret.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
THERE i declare.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
Bankruptcy, yeah it Was Bill belichick, saying, Quote i'm fully
committed to THE unc football program we're building.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
Here end. Quote that's. It that's.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
It i'm fully committed to THE unc football program we're building.
Here and Then cunningham, said, Quote Coach belichick has the
full support of the athletic department and university end quote
until we fire, him or, yeah or until we can
decide on a buy out number that works for. Everybody so, yeah,
YEAH i mean that's what we've got so. Far and that's.
(36:06):
It and you, KNOW i had a couple of people
text me last. NIGHT a few people send it LIKE i,
GUESS i guess everything's going to be okay at no
NOW i. DON'T i, mean this is the dreaded vote of,
confidence the college football. Version and this, IS i believe
after yesterday's reporting from people who have been all over,
This Andrew, jones who's very well connected when it comes
To Carolina, athletics but Also Oli, connelly who was the
(36:29):
guy to break the news a year ago That Bill
belichick was taking the, job that what they reported is absolutely.
True maybe there are some minute details that you, know
could be a little bit. Different but you you now
have The carolina folks pivoting and doing their own thing
behind the scenes and trying to you, know position themselves
the way they want to be. Positioned and so again
(36:51):
you've Got bill SAYING i am committed to THE unc
program that we are building. Here what you don't read
at the end of that statement is dot dot dot
for now or until they give me WHAT i want?
Now is it, POSSIBLE i guess that he stays.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
On till the end of the.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Year, yeah it's it's always. Possible, sure we got a
long way to go still until The cow game Next.
Friday AND i hate to break it to, you this
team still stinks, really really.
Speaker 4 (37:16):
Bad and the thing, is if they're gonna fire, him
they have to fire him by What wednesday? Morning for
what The cow, game because you're gonna have to go
all across the. Country oh oh, OH i see what you're.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
Saying, okay you're talking about in terms of logistics and
flying the team out.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
There, yeah so technically you could, say, well the game's On,
friday but, heck they got six days essentially or less
than six days at this point to figure it out
that he's going to be coaching the cow game or.
Speaker 2 (37:39):
Not, yeah one of the things THAT i do wonder,
about and we brought this up, yesterday like do they
have an idea of where they want to go with
this if they decide to move, on BECAUSE i don't
know what's being said behind the. SCENES i don't know
if you Know bill is trying to sell them on
let me get through the cow, game you, know let
me finish the year and then we'll be done with
this or something that along goes are maybe you know
(38:01):
something was said and we know this thing happens all
the time that you know in interpersonal relationships and office,
settings people say, things they tick off people in power decision,
makers and things can change at the drop of a.
HAT i, mean remember When Jerry richardson decided that he
was going to Fire Dave gettleman eight days before the season, Started,
like do we think that was just pre planned By
Jerry richardson the whole?
Speaker 3 (38:21):
Time BECAUSE i. DON'T i don't think you ever. DID
i don't.
Speaker 4 (38:24):
Know he got pissed off because he wasn't going to
GIVE td an, extension right And Greg olsen an.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Extension, yeah so conditions change things.
Speaker 4 (38:31):
Happened, Well now that was the second Time jerry did that,
too Because Bill pollium fallout was another thing too in
nineteen ninety. Seven SO i don't think he planned ever,
one and we saw how in a great scheme of,
things both times it hurt the franchise in the long.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
Run.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
YEAH i just got a text From Michael. Felder now
he's trying to call, us and it's also not going
through on our. End it's the craziest Thing i've ever, seen.
MAN I, YEAH i WISH i had control of things
around here AND i would just give at and t the. Boot,
no it's not that. Simple but like we can't call.
Him you could try one more time if you want.
To But felder's texting me and saying he's trying to
(39:07):
call our studio and that he also can't get. In
AND i know it's not ringing Because i've keep. It
i've kept my eye on the phone lines this entire.
Time so we're gonna Try Michael felder once, more and if,
not we'll probably have to get our crack engineer back
on the, Case, dave who's a good man to try
to figure out WHY at AND t will not allow
us to take phone calls doing the same.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
Thing is that what's? Happening all? Right SO i.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
Guess we'll have to figure this out during the break.
TOO i don't know what this means for later. Guests
Hopefully Willie PE's on The, comraes Hopefully Charles lee coming
up at five.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
O'clock we'll get it all figured.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
Out but if we can Get Michael felder on the
line in the next, segment then we will certainly do.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
That But.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
Rob, said call him on your personal cell and put
him on. Speaker. Lol that'd be great, radio wouldn't. It but,
anyway when we get him, on if we get him,
on we'll talk about this And belichick and what's going
on In Chapel hill his read on. It mike has
often re referenced in our conversations that he's in a
big group chat with a bunch of Former carolina, players
(40:05):
and he's referenced that many times in these. Conversations would
love to, know And i'm sure he can't share, everything
but would love to know what's being said by former
players right now as it relates To carolina And belichick
and that statement last, night and an on three report
this morning too That bill was apparently on the phones
last night with committed recruits answering their, questions and you,
(40:28):
KNOW i guess the implication being trying to quell any
concerns about what's going on with the, program and to what.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
End i'm really not. SURE i, just, YEAH i don't.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Know is this damage control for his Own hold on
before you, nod, like this is all damage control to an,
Extent but what form of damage control would.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
This be For Bill? Belichick you know WHAT i?
Speaker 2 (40:50):
Mean is he realizing that nobody else is going to
want him to coach and he doesn't want to go
back to the, media and so he's trying to double,
down buckle, down and try to figure out a way
to salvage this situation before.
Speaker 3 (41:02):
They cut him.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
Loose Because caroline is absolutely digging into and compiling information
on these recruiting violations so that they have ammunition to
fire him for cause and save a bunch of money
if they need. To they're doing that regardless of what
he's telling. Them they'd be idiots not. To so that's
happening for. Sure is This bill trying to salvage this whole,
thing you, know is this bill trying to do the
university a solid and keep some of these kids committed for,
(41:25):
now knowing that it's still coming to an, end which
might not be worth the effort because they're still likely
to decommit and take meetings elsewhere or visits. ELSEWHERE i
think he's still trying to say face just a little
bit too, basically maybe help some of the the, university
help with some of the. Commits BUT i also know
how many times have we had situations like. This reer
(41:46):
coaches have been near to getting fired and they still
trying to do, this and it doesn't really make that
much of a. Difference you're finding a losing.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
Battle you're trying to stop a dam with a bunch
of twigs instead of a massive.
Speaker 3 (41:58):
Thing SO i think that's kind of what it.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
Is, OKAY i believe if That's Michael felder calling, in
we'll give it.
Speaker 3 (42:04):
All we'll do. This you'll give me a thumbs.
Speaker 2 (42:07):
Up if It's mike calling, in what we'll do is
we'll hit a break and we'll come back and put
him on the other. Side if that is in fact
WHAT i think it. Is if, not that could be
our engineer. Calling he is a diehard loyal listener of the.
STATION i apologize for, this. Y'all i've never had to
do so much behind the scenes inside baseball radio in
my entire, life but the phone line situation is less than,
(42:28):
ideal AND i would like to bring you guys some
of the guests that we have lined up for today's.
Show so kind of all over the place trying to
get this. Fixed we'll hit a, break we'll come back
top of the hour if we. Can we'll Put Michael
felder on the. Air Sports radio ninety two seven wf
AND z
