Speaker 2 (00:29):
Good Friday afternoon, Queen City Sports Radio ninety two seven
wfn ZKB and smoke back with you on a football Friday.
And boy is it. We are fully in swing for
the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl down in Tampa, and
right now the NC State Wolfpack with a seven nothing
lead over the Memphis Tigers. And we are going to
(00:51):
keep you abreast all afternoon long and let you know
what's going on. If you're wondering how we got to
seven nothing. CJ. Bailey a four fourteen yard touchdown run
capping off and opening game drive with eleven thirty two
left to go in the opening quarter. But CJ. Bailey
a fourteen yard rushing touchdown to give the wolf Pack
a seven nothing lead over formerly Ryan Silverfields soon to
(01:15):
be Charles Huffs Memphis Tigers in the Gasparillo Bowl or
Gasparilla Bullbar. Pardon me. We'll get to a lot throughout
the course of the show. Monday headlines today probably the
most pressing thing we do, or at least thematically here
on a Friday, Monday Headlines Today returns Panthers Bucks edition.
I will also open it up to college football playoff
(01:37):
Monday Headlines today as those festivities begin tonight in Arnest,
Alabama and Oklahoma tonight first round playoff action. Smoke's gonna
be locked in. I'm gonna be locked in. Nick Saban's
gonna be locked in, and Nick Saban also trashing the
Group of five and JMU in particular. We got to
talk about that coming up in just a bit. But again,
(01:58):
Monday Headlines Today, seven oh four five, I have seven
ninety six ten. What happens Sunday? All right between the
Panthers and the Buccaneers Monday Headlines today. You know how
this game works. Send me what you've got. I think Sunday.
I'm hopeful maybe that Sunday. I don't know what I'm
thinking right now. As Smoke's got Oh, okay, so we
have a big play in NC State. You got to
stop pointing because I'm gonna turn around and look, I'm
(02:20):
a squirrel. Ooh, a nut like I'm gonna turn if
you put if you turn or you point it's stop
just point, stop pointing at the TV.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
I'm sorry, I just saw Rogers just hurtle a man,
all right, I mean that doesn't happen at all.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
I know, but the powers that be position those TVs
behind the hosts in the studio so that we're not
distracted by what's going on your season. You're a veteran
at this point, you know better than to point excitedly
at the TV because I'm gonna wip my head around
to look with see what's going on. I'm bad, not bad.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
By the way, NC State fourth down stop all Memphis,
which was pretty big.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
So yeah, okay, all right, So again we'll keep you abreast.
We'll do it in a timely manner where smoke doesn't
distract me and uh, you know, get me off track.
But anyway, Monday headlines today seven zho four five seven
ninety six ten. I think Sunday can be really awesome.
And I know that probably sounds, you know, a little
bit captain obvious, but this is a massive game. It's
(03:11):
the biggest game of the season. It is a to me,
it's the definition of a must win game for Carolina.
The playoffs have arrived early because of the way this
division is played out, and so this is like a
playoff game on Sunday, and I am hoping that the
atmosphere will reflect that in Bank of America Stadium. We
got Christmas Week coming up. I know people are going
to be traveling. The roads were insane today all over
(03:34):
the city. I'm sure we got people bouncing out early
to get to the Christmas holiday. So I am hoping though,
that on Sunday the Bank is full, it is loud,
that there's a true home field advantage inside that building.
And I've got I think Sunday could be potentially one
of those all time special moments that we talk about now,
like the job's not done. One win will not get
(03:54):
them to the playoffs, but they have to win this game,
like I have to win this game because the following
the Panthers will get the now number one seed in
the NFC Seattle Seahawks after last night's thrilling win. Although
no one told Al Michael's thrilling win in overtime last night,
the Seattle Seahawks are now the number one overall seed
in the NFC, so Carolina will have the opportunity to
(04:16):
knock off the number one seed in the NFC at
home twice after beating the Rams a couple of weeks ago.
But this is one Carolina absolutely has to have on Sunday,
and so it got me thinking smoked, like if I believe,
if we believe Sunday could be one of the more
special times and games and moments that we have together
in Bank of America Stadium. I would call out to
(04:37):
the longtime Charlotte sports fans especially, but really for anybody
to you, this is the question I'm gonna ask today,
on an addition to Monday headlines today, what is your
most memorable sporting event or moment in the history of
Charlotte or Carolina Sports. I'll extend it to the Carolinas,
all right, with a particular focus though on Charlotte. What
(04:58):
to you is the singular most memorable sporting event in
the history of Charlotte Pro Sports? And I will say
Carolina Sports too. You know, we can expand it out.
We got our folks south of the border that listen
to this station as well. We are only nine miles
from where we sit from the South Carolina state line.
We are the Carolinas after all, So the singular most
memorable sporting event to you in the history of Charlotte
(05:21):
and or the Carolina seven oh four five, seven oh
ninety six ten. Would love to take your memories and
get your thoughts on that throughout the course of the show.
But again, your prediction Sunday's game, Panthers, Bucks. Good news
yesterday we got more players back on the field practicing.
Better news today, if you want to call it that
smoke that Ikyakuanu was on the practice field today. Now,
(05:42):
I'm not going to rejoice because I still think he's
going to be battling through some serious pain on Sunday,
and like everybody else, I am anxious to see how
that affects him, what he looks like when he's out there,
you know, will it play a major role in the
way that he plays. Earlier this week when we brought
this up, you know, somebody told me that, well, it's
(06:03):
a good thing the Bucks pass rush stinks that they
don't have a pass rush either. Well, that's true. You know,
it's a good thing you're not facing you know, Micah
Parsons or you know, players like that out there on Sunday.
But that guarantees nothing, as we know, and so Ikey's
injury the knee injury concerning a whole lot of people.
But the good news is he is out there and
(06:23):
practicing today, so we'll see how it goes. I mean,
you've got yosh Nima to step in there if you
need to. Respectfully, that doesn't make a ton of people
feel better because there is a drop off there, obviously,
but otherwise it's smoke. It seems like this team is
going to be mostly healthy going into this game Sunday
against the Bucks.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Mostly well, uh, knock on wood, just so we make
sure everyone got three walk through safely this time around.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Yep, yep, yep. So tweet Tammy's But.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Yeah, I like Ikey's clearly not one hundred percent, but
he's going to give it a go, and I look,
I find that very admirable, just because you know, as
we said, Ikey's putting a lot of money on the
line here, not only this year, but for this game.
What happens if he gets hurt? How many millions of
dollars does he lose in this situation?
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Yep?
Speaker 3 (07:04):
I got to give him a lot of credit. Not
having Trevin Wallace not great, you know, I know the
linebackers have been to roast throughout the whole entire year
for the most part. Yeah, but you want to be
as bad as healthy as you can be a linebacker,
and now that you're not again, it gets a little worrisome.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Now.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Cherlist did pretty well in the second half, specifically in
that game against the Falcons, yep, but he also had
a couple of big coverage busts in the first half.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
He's not a starting caliber linebacker, but he's a replacement
level linebacker.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
He's a replacement level linebacker that you would like to
just keep on specialty.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
He could have some good Sundays. Yeah, he's also probably
gonna be a liability, a smoke just said, you know,
in the passing game from time to time. I like
and I've said this many times, I like Claude and cherylists.
I like his physicality. I think by all accounts, he's
a good teammate. He understands the defense. So you could
have worse options out there that I believe. But it
is a concern going into this game, without question. But
(08:01):
it's been a concern to some extent for most of
the season because this linebacker situation is one that we
all identified pretty early on as probably being the key
area of the defense that was still lacking or lagging
behind a little bit. So when you get away from
the starters Trevin Wallace and Christian Roseboom, you're not gonna
feel great about that, but you could feel worse because
(08:23):
claud and Cherliss has some experience in Claude and Cherliss
has filled in capably at times for this team. A
lot of Monday headlines today, by the way, coming in
right now seven oh four, five, seven oh ninety six, ten.
Hit us up with what she got over there, Buckeye
Dave saying, Monday headlines, Bryce walks the plank with two interceptions. Wow, okay,
(08:44):
Bryce walks the plank with I listen. I hope not obviously,
And you know, given the lack of depth for Tampa
as well in the secondary, I'm gonna have a couple
of rookies out there on Sunday. I certainly hope Bryce
doesn't get picked off twice. That would be disastrous, and
that's the kind of performance that would, you know, absolutely
take us into a sharp hairpin turn back in the
(09:05):
direction of oh Man. Bryce not only was inconsistent this year,
but laid an egg when it mattered the most and
the move on from Bryce we've got the wrong guy. Crew. Well,
they'll be louder than ever and it'll be hard to
blame them if that happens. Carolina. Mike keeping it simple.
I like his Monday headline today, Tampa gets their bucks kicked.
(09:28):
Don't think they're gonna run with that one in Tampa.
But hey, maybe the Charlotte Observer, Tampa gets their bucks kicked.
And I don't think this is going to be a
blowout either way. Hard to imagine, right, I mean, maybe
one team jumps out to a double digit lead. I
could see a scenario either way where the Panthers start
hot and they're out. They're up ten to nothing, thirteen nothing,
(09:49):
maybe the Bucks. Maybe Carolina does have an early turnover.
Maybe the Bucks capitalize and go up ten thirteen nothing.
I could see that, But I don't. I think you're right.
I don't think either team is running away with this game.
On Sunday. Let's see here a bunch more of these
coming in English. Paul Panther or Monday headline today, Panthers
defense burns bakers buns. All right, we're going with a
(10:10):
literation there, burns bakers buns. Shaw x Panthers win by
a Baker's dozen twenty seven to fourteen. Now that would
be a welcome sight. I mean, holding the Bucks offense
to fourteen points? Would that sounds like a good time.
Don't threaten me with a good time now, keep sitting
at your Monday headlines today seven oh four, five, seven
ninety six ten. What do you think happens in this game?
(10:31):
Juicy Junior Young's late heroic sink the Bucks. Panthers win
twenty seven twenty four to grab NFC South lead. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I can get with you on that. I like that.
Panthers win twenty seven to twenty four to grab the
NFC South lead. Let's see. And then I got a
bunch of people with their favorite most memorable all time
(10:53):
Charlotte sporting events. I'm gonna get back to these coming
up here in just a couple of minutes. These are
like really coming in on the text line right now.
Bebop says Baker, goes buck wild, b Bop. Are you
a Panthers fan? You claim to be? You do? You
claim to be a Panthers fan? And I'm sure you're
gonna respond to me that you're just being realistic or pragmatic.
You're just a realist. You just you know how this
(11:15):
game is gonna go because you just you just do right.
You just know that maybe you're you're right. But for
a guy who claims to be a Panthers fan, I
get a whole lot of anti Panthers propaganda from you.
On the FanDuel text line, I do JJ says Panthers
still clawing with win over the Bucks. All right, Panthers
still clawing with win over the Bucks sidebar smoke. I
(11:35):
will be and I bet you will be too. I'm
gonna be paying attention to what h well like. I
I want to believe that after this weekend, ideally after
a Panthers win, that when the Seahawks come in here
the following Sunday, at the same time, the Bucks will
be playing the Dolphins. I can't wait to find out
Sunday what quinn Ewers looks like. Ihead this Dolphins offense.
(11:59):
Now they get the Bucks are the rather the Bengals
on Sunday, so they're at home scenes the best barometer
are That's what. But here's the thing though, I thought
that too, quinn Ewers against the but the Bengals, well,
you know, but nice little ramp up. You know what
I'm thinking, Bad defense, get quinn Ewers, build some confidence
on Sunday at home. Bad defense coming to town. Let's
(12:20):
get yours going for like two fifty and two touchdowns
and carrying in a whole bunch of confidence and swagger
against the Bucks the next week. That's what I'm thinking.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Yeah, I'm just not wanting to put all my eggs
into quin you weers, pall, No, nobody does, I'm saying.
But you know what I'm thinking here, the same thing.
Even if the Panthers beat the Buccaneers on Sunday, which
they have to, it's massive.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Yeah. If the following week the Seahawks come in here
and beat the Panthers and the Bucks beat the Dolphins,
Carolina is still gonna have to win in Week eighteen, right, Yep,
You're still gonna have to sweep them. So, no matter,
even if the Panthers win, you know, there's a chance
that we're all rooting hard for the Miami Dolphins the
next week is implausible as a win, there might be
because you know, if that the following week Panthers lose,
(13:02):
Bucks win, you're right back to Week eighteen and Tampa
one game for the whole shebang.
Speaker 3 (13:07):
Yeah, and you know, this is where it kind of
gets very interesting, is because you haven't played this team
at all this year, so you don't know really what
to expect. Look, I think this game kind of gives
me vibes to two games in Panthers history. For a bucks,
it gives me the Carolina Panthers vibes in twenty eighteen
when they took on the Saints.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Of Hey, this is our last shot.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Let's go get them, you know, because if we don't
win this game here, we're really in a tough situation
and we're basically scrapping and calong just to get the
Week eighteen. At that point, when Carolina lost that game
to the Saints, we kind of all felt.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yep, it's over. It's over.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
You know, put Cam Newton down for the rest of
the year. Let's just limp to the finish line. That's
what that was like. And for Carolina, it gives me
the vibes with this fan base and just how this
team has been performing. Of the Saints game in twenty thirteen,
Week sixteen, the Monsoon, Greg Hardy Sack and Drew Brees
(14:07):
multiple times. Luke Keickley with twenty six plus tackles, and
then you know, Cam Newton gets that game winning drive
with Dominic Kickson and the place that was apparently one
of the only times the place is shook and it
was visible for it to be shaking. Yeah, that's what
it kind of feels like because just like in twenty thirteen,
not saying that the teams are exactly the same, because
(14:28):
they're not, but that was the team that was gonna
get Carolina to the playoffs for the first time since
two thousand and eight, which was a five year drought,
which was a long time at that point. This is
even longer drought. This is the longest drout in franchise history.
So I think given this opportunity, I don't think we're
gonna see no takeover. We'll see a couple of Bucks fans,
but I don't think that many are coming up here. Yeah,
(14:48):
because they live in beautiful Tampa, Florida, where it's like
seventy degrees all the time.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Florida.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Yeah, why why would we move? Why would we go
up there for a game? Is Charlotte?
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Why are you talking like they're from Wisconsin? I don't know,
probably wis consin Heights moved down there probably. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
It also doesn't have like three or four neighbors that
are from Wisconsin, so the Wisconsin accent kind of gets
drilled into me. Okay, all right, but yeah, I just
I viewed this as a game where Carolina has a
chance to do it. And I think Carolina, if they
get off to a hot start, Tampa will still respawn,
like you said earlier. But I just I don't know
(15:22):
why I'm this confident, Kyle, but I just I feel
confident Carolina's gonna win both these games.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
I obviously I hope you're right. I don't know. After
the Rams game a couple of weeks ago, and I
told you this, I just it was one of the
coolest times I've ever had in Bank of America Stadium
that day, cold, rainy Rams fans are non existent, as
we found out and we know already, and so the
Panthers fans had the place all of themselves. There was
(15:46):
no takeover. It was all Panthers fans, and it was
only sixty or seventy percent full, but the place was rocking,
and Carolina was in it. And with every big play,
every chunk play touchdown, every big stop. The place was
getting louder and louder and a bit more aus and
so I just think the I know the opportunity exists
for that on Sunday. Smoke's right, we'll probably get you know,
a decent smattering of Bucks fans in here. But man,
(16:08):
if you're considering getting out to the stadium, if you're
on the fence, if you're a season ticket holder, and
you're just not sure, maybe your add's Christmas week and
get to the stadium. Please, Like selfishly, I'm asking you
because I want to see it. I want to be
a part of it. But we're going to finish that
game under the lights on Sunday night, right, I mean
very possibly, So like I mean, yeah, I guess that's
pushing it a little bit. The sun's going to be
(16:29):
going down, but the lights will be the lights will
be on, I guess, is what I'm thinking. But it's
got a chance to be an amazing atmosphere in there
on Sunday. So get out there to the bank. We'd
love to see you. We'll talk about this, by the way,
with Mussim Muhammad coming up at four twenty five. Moose
is back in just over an hour to talk all
about Carolina and Tampa on Sunday. Make sure to be
there for that. We'll come back. We'll take more of
(16:50):
your Monday headlines today. What you think is the single
most memorable moment in Charlotte sports history. And we got
to talk about the Hornets last night because, as Smoke
said via the Godfather Al Pacino video he sent me
last night, just when you think you're out, they pull
you back. In Sports Radio ninety two to seven wf
and Z, I'm gonna pay you right now.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
In my opinion, there is no one in the thing
zip code with Gooman.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
I'm so so We're coming to the phone lines here
in just a minute. Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z.
It's the best damn sports talk in the Carolinas. And
we are powered by Victory Chevrolet. Go to Victory Chevrolet
dot com. Surf the inventory where nineteen dollars down can
(17:41):
put you in a brand new Chevrolet. Go to Victory
Chevrolet dot Com. Smoke is demanding that I apologize as
we come back from break here. Smoke, I'm not apologize.
Why do you think I need to apologize? Tell the
people why you just demanded an apology for me during
the break.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Well, you said the game will be ending under the light.
It will, but you know, technically your right. But we've
had two collars during this break ask what time is
the game one o'clock or four o'clock? And I think
that was directly because of your comments there about the
game ending under the light.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
It's December, okay, the sun will have started to go
down after four pm where we will be you they
turned the lights on at the you know, for that reason,
So at the end of this game, the stadium lights
will be on. That's what I meant. Okay, the bright
lights of the stadium will be on when this game finishes,
because it's the time of year the sun will be
going down, So that's what I meant. But Smoke's right.
(18:33):
We had two people call in like what it can
be made? I thought it was a one o'clock Was
he talking about it's a one o'clock kick? Yes, But
the only point was the we'll finish this game under
the lights, So yes, technically I'm right about that. Seven
oh four five, seven ninety six to ten hit us
up on the FanDuel text line, King McQueen saying, k
be my son and I will be in section one
twenty one to witness Bryce audible out of a very
(18:54):
predictable horn junior run play into a deep shot for
a seventy yard touchdown. I like houseacific that is, that's
really good. My guy also asked me if I'm willing
to guarantee another Bryce three hundred yard passing game. I mean,
if it feels feels very presumptuous and bold of me,
and I like to consider myself a bold man. The
(19:17):
odds are against me overall, but I do feel really
good about Bryce playing well in this game, so I'm
not gonna hem and haul around it. Yeah, I'm gonna
say Bryce goes for three hundred plus on Sunday. I mean,
you got an in genuine in saying that too. I
do like you have an inexperienced secondary back there. With
some of the injuries they're dealing with, it's already not
a world beating defense to begin with. So yeah, I'll
(19:37):
just I'll put my stamp on it. I'm gonna say
Bryce goes for three hundred plus yards passing on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
I mean, if scares me the most is on the trenches.
Yeah with vidavea. Oh yeah, just keep Beta Veil away
from Bryce. Please, Kate, Kate k Orbit.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
Lines. You guys do your jobs, please, just do please please.
I couldn't do your job, so no, I'm just saying,
you do your jobs on Sunday. Please keep Vidaveya away
from the quarterback. We all need that to happen. Rachel
rough rugged Rachel on the FanDuel text line, saying, Kyle's
gonna have the panther showing up even later than we
normally do. Stop that, quit it. She also said, you
(20:16):
don't know how bad I want to experience a moment
like that with the kids. I think the moment she's
referencing was the twenty thirteen Saints game you were talking about.
She says, I need it, fellas he's not witnessed important
panther wins since he's been sentient for him to get
to be at one dot dot dot. Yeah, I mean
as a parent, I get that. I understand that. I
mean my kids aren't there yet, But that exact moment
(20:38):
you're talking about, I know how cool it would be
to experience that with them. That's what I'm saying, show up,
get loud, like I know it sometimes comes across as
a little bit, especially with the teams and stuff, like fans,
we need you, and it's not always the most off.
But like in this case, it's a playoff game, you
got a chance to vastly outnumber the visiting team. You know,
give this this team a real advantage on third day,
(21:00):
you know, be the wind at their back, the wind
underneath their sales. I can get corner or if you want.
But like home field advantage matters. So if you can
get to the bank on Sunday, get to the bank
on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
And what also means a lot too is I don't know,
it's just the old school kid in me too. It's
been a while since these Bucks Panthers games have had
this much on the line. I know, in twenty twenty
two they were a quarter away from beating the Bucks
when Keith Taylor happened and Mike Evans happened.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Yep, that was the like.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
But that's the one time of Panthers Bucks games meant
something in the last fifteen years.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
I remember talking to myself into Keith Taylor getting more
interceptions at the NFL level than he did in college.
Remember the whole talking point. Yeah, you know what, we
know he doesn't have it, never had an interception in college.
But look at the frame, man, look at the he's
he's going to turn that around at the NFL. He
never did.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
But no, to be serious, it feels like I'm back
in elementary school. Yeah, a Panthers Bucks game in December
actually having huge importance on the NFC South. Yeah, this
is like those big drag out rawls in two thousand
and three, two thousand and five. Unfortunately Cadillac Williams got
the best of that one two thousand and eight. This
used to beat This used to be the mecca of
Panthers rivalries in the NFL. Stop talking about and saying
(22:12):
stop talking about the Falcons. No, this is our rival
and Dada Carolina should have beat them last year here
they let them win that game with the mistakes. I
want to beat these guys so bad. I hate the
Bucks all right, and it's been laying dormant for a while.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
I want to get these idiots, these pirates, go back
to their fake sombrero and Tampa Bay beat them, and
then go down to Tampa Bay again and beat them
again and knock out the Bucks for good.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
Because this is a Fougaysey team. Did you just call
a pirate had a sombrero? Remember Chris Berman called the
original stadium the sombrero. Oh that's right, he did. Yeah,
because the pirate hads not called a sombrero. Yeah, it's
called a tricorn.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
Yeah, I know, but you know I was giving a
hat not there to uh Chris berm because he called
the old stadium of Sombrero, which is now a parking
lot right next.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
To the stadium. Yeah, I forgot. I forgot that Berman
did that, Yeah, and that he called this to new
Sombrero factually incorrect. Pirate hats called a tricorn. I looked
that up once. Yeah, but the stadium arches looked like
a sombrero a little bit. Okay, all right? Seven O
four five seven of ninety six to ten. Hit us
up on the FanDuel text line. Nick the Amazon driver saying,
my birthday is Sunday. Only birthday wish I have is winning.
(23:24):
I'll be in section one twenty one, screaming, keep pounding.
Wait a minute, Wait a minute, King McQueen just said
he'll be in section one twenty one. You and King
McQueen meet up. Apparently you're sitting in the same section,
Nick the Amazon Driver, King McQueen, both in section one
twenty one where name tags find each other. Get loud
on Sunday. Okay, you should do that. Let's go to
(23:44):
the phone lines. Carlos is up first here on a
football Friday. Carlos, what's going on?
Speaker 5 (23:49):
First off, Happy holidays to you guys in a happy
New Year as well. By the way, Yeah, as far
as the memorable sports moments that I had to put
two out, i'd say for us, I mean super Bowl
thirty eight is always kind of like a memorable one
at least here because just to hear Bill Razinski stay
on the radio back when I was in I was
(24:10):
a sixth grader when I heard that and say like, yes, Charlotte,
there is a Super Bowl and we're in it. I
thought that was pretty memorable for me since I was
a kid growing up here. And the second one is
definitely if I had to put it up there, I
know not a lot of people don't talk about it
as much, but it is our only professional title. Is
when I'd say, too, when the Hurricanes won the Stanley
Cup and those sits over Edmonton. So that's those are
(24:32):
two up. There that could put up there also for
this Sunday if I can addend this just real quick
for the Panthers Bucks game. Yeah, we definitely got to
beat Tampa, and I hope you do beat Tampa because
I have a lot of family members in Tampa Bay
that have been on my case talking so much junk
down there in Tampa, and there there's there are a
radio guys down there are always poking fun at us
all the time, and he gets on their show to
(24:54):
rip on us every chance he gets. So I honestly
can't wait to see them for Christmas and they come
up here, I'll pissed off when they know that they
probably are going to go back home to Tampa with
a loss. In other words, guys, thank you for being
on the show, and you guys have a next day.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Thank you, Bud. I appreciate that. Now, hold on, you said,
did he say there was a Tampa show talking trash
about us all the time. I thought that's what he said.
Thought he said Tampa friends. Oh I know I heard friends.
I thought he said Tampa radio show too. I'll have
to check in with kras Nikki and find out more
about that. Let's go back to the phone lines. JC
is up next, JC. What's going on? Man?
Speaker 4 (25:24):
I got a special one for you. Okay, So I'll
have to borrow Smoke's memory. I think it was twenty
eleven and we had the Patriots at night at Bank.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Of America twenty thirteen, twenty thirteen.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
Twenty thirteen. All right, good, So anyway, that game was awesome.
The atmosphere in there was good, and I had this
drunk guy in front of me scream then go for
too even on kickoff. I mean, it was ridiculous. But anyway,
so I'm Indian zone and Tom Brady throws a pass
(26:02):
to the corner of the end zone and Thomas Davis
goes in and knocks it down. At the last play
of the game, everybody holds their breath, they don't throw
a flag, and the place goes crazy. And I sit
there and focus on Tom Brady and Tom Brady's veins
(26:24):
are popping out of his neck and he's f bombing
the referees right my end zone. That is the best
time I've ever had.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
That's a great memory. I also just love the fact
that Smoke, without even taking a breath, shot at twenty
thirteen to coop me with that's the pin of smoke.
But that's a great memory. So that was your best
twenty thirteen, Brady's pissed. TD knocks it away corner of
the end zone. That's good stuff. What do you think
about Sunday? Real quick? Pour, I let you go. What's
your gut? Tell you about this one?
Speaker 4 (26:53):
I don't know. I hope we can ground and pound
because they're getting so old on defense and I don't
think they can hold up if we wear them down.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
I like that take. Thank you, JAC appreciate the phone call, Smoke.
What do you recall about. Do you remember the play
he's talking about? I was. I was not in the
building for that one.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
Uh the passing affairs that they didn't call, but we
don't refer to it as a passing affairs.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
I want to go back and watch it during the breakdown.
I don't remember that. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
I kind of had to sneak past that one because
I'll still it was a school night in high school.
My parents are still pretty strict about it. Uh huh so, Mom, Dad,
if you're listening, I snuck up and watched.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
I basically had to.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
Not to make any noises or anything because that was
a big game because they just beat the forty nine
Ers the week prior, yep. And if they beat the
Patriots to go I believe to seven and three, and
it's like, holy crap, that this could be real. This,
this team could be it, and they could break the
spell and get back into the playoffs. And then they did,
and it was like, all right, we're really going now,
this really is a real thing.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Okay, all right, seven oh four, five, seven ninety six
to ten. Bunch of phone calls starting to come in.
I've gotten Chad Coda in nineteen nineties six several times
on the FanDuel text line, the one that you know
well sent them to a division title back in nineteen
ninety six season that you know is remembered most for
that signature home playoff win over the reigning champ Dallas Cowboys,
(28:16):
but was set up by that win a couple of
weeks prior over the Steelers with the Chad Coda interception.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
By the way, I think we're just days away from
that being the twenty ninth anniversary really of that game.
Yet that was the last regular season game of the
year that was also memberle for another reason. That was
the game that Sir pur fell in the live ball.
What Yeah, you've never seen the footage of Sir Purf
falling on the live ball.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
I think I have so.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
Back when punts were in you could down a punt
in the end zone, Sir per got.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
On the ball. Oh oh, I have seen that.
Speaker 3 (28:47):
Then and then the next play Cordell Stewart had an
eightyr touchdown.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
I have seen the old Grady Well. I guess it's
kind of grandy footage of that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's
good stuff. Back to the phone lines, Fan guy Dave
is up next. Dave. How are you, brother? What's on
your mind?
Speaker 5 (29:00):
Go good?
Speaker 6 (29:01):
How are you man? Happy football Friday? You real quick
to answer your question. As a lifelong Charlotte sports fan,
I think the most memorable sporting event I've attended was
the NFC Championship game. I mean, it snowed that morning,
the tailgating and just the overall buzz of Uptown was unmatched,
Like the city came alive. We had a chance to
see our team punch their tickets to the Super Bowl,
(29:22):
and we molly walked the Cardinals. I mean it was awesome.
Went to the game with my mom. You could fill
the upper deck shaking, just all time sports moments. Yeah, yeah, man, I.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
Watched that one with a great deal of envy because
I was living in South Carolina, vent and I didn't
get to go that night. So if I could hop
in a time machine doing what I do now, that
is the moment, one of the key moments that I
would go back to.
Speaker 7 (29:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (29:45):
Absolutely. And one quick thing too. You know, I hope
the team is as tough as you and smoke where
this week that will in the clubhouse. Bug. You guys
gave it your all. We appreciate that. But you know,
I found myself like throughout the week trying to pick
myself up off the match. That was a tough game,
but that was an important game, you know. And then
Roman Harper gave me a chuck on Wednesday talking about
his golf game, like he sounded like me out there.
(30:07):
You know, it's cold, the ball doesn't travel far. You
had to smash it on the greens. But he had fun.
And you know what, this season has been fun. Very inconsistent,
but it's been fun. And if I can rants the
Panther Nation real quick, I'll be I'll be quick good.
Speaker 7 (30:20):
You know, if you if you.
Speaker 6 (30:21):
Told me before the season started. After dropping to one
and three, we'd be seven and seven with three games left.
Like you said, it's time for Panther Nation to show
up on Sunday against the Dirty Bucks. We need to
come prepared for a first place battle. It's great weather.
We need a twelfth man. This team deserve. They deserve
a home crowd on Sunday, and we should give it
to him. Thanks for taking my call. As always, love
(30:43):
the show. Keep pounting them.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
Thank you, brother, appreciate you fan guy. Dave checking in
that last part to me is critical, Like I'm not
trying to sound like a team cheerleader here. The Panthers
don't pay me. We don't air the games here on
wfn Z, But you know it's what we do with
the home of the showld sports fan and we're all
sports fans, and we need all all the Panthers fans
in the building on Sunday. I'm going to be there
in the very buttoned up Bank of America press box
(31:05):
taking it all in. You guys will get to have
the fun. Y'all will get to have all the fun
inside the stadium. But like it needs to be and
and formidable atmosphere because it will make a difference, and
we haven't been able to do many things like this
in Bank of America Stadium over the last seven years.
So if you can get to the bank. Susan is
up next on the phone. Susan, what's going on?
Speaker 7 (31:25):
Y'all gonna have to help me with the year because
I'm an old ladies, but I loved the time. And
I think it may have been ninety three, four or
five somewhere, and after they won, I guess it was
the same year as you're talking about getting to go
(31:46):
to the conference final and the players came out after
the game and did a victory las flapping hands with
and I just thought that was.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Real. Yeah, was it smokers at the Steelers wins. She's
talking about what do you talking? What do you think
that is? The Cowboys winning? The Cowboys win? Yeah, okay,
so you're talking about the after the Cowboys win in
ninety six.
Speaker 7 (32:15):
Right, the first time they ever won anything.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Knocked off the defending champs. Absolutely, Susan, thank you for
the phone call. I love that. That's great.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
That's become a tradition, at least in the Jerry era,
every time they won a home playoff game, they go
outside and basically do a whole team does a victory lot.
They did it when they beat the Cowboys again to No.
Speaker 4 (32:35):
Three.
Speaker 3 (32:37):
Didn't have a home playoff game in No. Five, but
when they won in twenty fourteen, it was a little
laid but they're like, hey, go back out there after
beating the Cardinals in that ugly game.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
Cam and the guys all did it.
Speaker 3 (32:48):
And they did it when they beat Seattle and Arizona
in twenty fifteen.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
So yeah, it's been their tradition. Let's get one more end.
Kevin is up next, Kevin, what's on your mind?
Speaker 4 (32:56):
Hey man, I don't know if you all mentioned this, KB,
but do you remember when a Lonzo beat the Celtics? Oh?
Speaker 2 (33:01):
Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
It was so funny because my brothers and I were
watching it and we dove on the floor like they.
Speaker 7 (33:07):
Were diving on the floor.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
It was it was absolutely great.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
Well full disclosure. Do I remember it? Yeah? At the time,
I was seven, so I've had to rewatch that in
terms of remembering it. But yeah, I mean I was
seven in nineteen ninety three, so I know exactly the
shot you're talking about. We've watched it numerous times here
in this building.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
Yeah, that was one of my favorite Hornets moments.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
That's awesome. Thank you, Kevin. Appreciate the phone call. Seven
oh four five seven ninety six ten. Hit us up
on the FanDuel text line. Right now we go to
smoke on the headlines. Who is smoke? Where is smoke?
Where there's smoke, there's fire. Let's go all right smoking
what you got? All right?
Speaker 3 (33:42):
First off, the Seattle Seahawks beat the La Rams in
a friller No.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
T thirty nine, thirty eight thirty seven.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
The Seahawks were actually down thirty to fourteen heading into
that final quarter. Dude, but Rahi si Heat had a
big pump return for a touchdown. Damn, San Darnold had
a touchdown the wackiest two point conversion ever, yeah, ever
successful in history, and the game ended on a two
point conversion in Kyle. Interesting nugget from Adam Schefter. Per
(34:12):
ESPN Research Research, the Seahawks became the first NFL team
ever to win a game in overtime on a two
point conversion.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
Really, yeah, think about it.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
You don't really need a two point conversion ninety nine
point nine percent of the time, that's true. I mean now,
in this era. Wow, where both teams get it no
matter what. Unbelievable game last night. I was I texted
you at near midnight last night for other reasons. Well,
I was watching that game. Al Michaels he was.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
I mean, he's just sleepy and he's a legend Hall
of Famer. I mean, al Michaels is one of the
greatest to ever do it. But like, I didn't feel
like he served the moment. But this is the biggest
game of the year. I just thought it was bad.
I thought it was a real I just didn't think
he handled the moment at all last night. What you
got well?
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Also, speaking of moments, I know a lot of people
will love this. According to Jeff Goodman and multiple reports,
Seth Trimble looks like he'll be making his return tomorrow
for to Tar Hills as a take on Ohio State
in Atlanta. By the way, yeah, NDCBS Sports Classic, Yep,
there you go, we'll come back. We'll keep taking your
phone calls. But I do want to talk about the
Hornets for a couple of minutes. What a win last night,
(35:20):
what a performance by LaMelo Ball, Conka nipples. I mean, well,
I'll talk about it next Sports Radio ninety two to
seven WFNZ Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z
(35:49):
on a football Friday, taking your Monday headlines.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Today, it's the biggest game of the season. It's effectively
a playoff game at the Bank on Sunday, Panthers and
Buccaneers one o'clock and we've got countdown to off ten
am on Sunday morning, ten am. Sharp join us, Me
and Mac and well the whole crew at the WFNZ doghouse.
We got Fitty behind the board. We're gonna have the
whole crew up there.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
Man.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
I love it. I said yesterday, we only get but
so many of these throughout the course of the year.
I look forward to home games, can't wait for pregame
shows and Sunday, you know, the biggest that we've done
in a couple of years. And texta a minute ago,
Cucumber Cucumber Tim said, let's go. You guys got me
fired up. Let's smash those expletive pirates. And he listen,
(36:33):
I'm fired up too. I can't wait to get out there.
I love our whole crew. You know, it's me and Mac,
it's Fiddy, it's it's d Mac. Our buddy Daryl McCrae,
our engineer. We got our friend Katrina Whiles out there,
we got the whole crew, we got a manual. I
love Sunday mornings at the Doghouse and I just have
a great feeling that between the game, the opponent, the weather,
this fan base, having something to look forward to, all
of it, that Sunday is going to be just incredible.
(36:55):
Immaculate vibes at the Doghouse Sunday morning at ten am,
seven oh four ninety six to ten. Hit us up
with all that on the FanDuel text line, We'll get
back to your most memorable moments in Charlotte sports history,
hoping that Sunday could become one of those potentially. But
I do we have to talk about the Charlotte Hornets,
not that I don't want to, but after last night, man,
it was exactly what we hoped this team could be
(37:19):
when the season began. Last night and Smoke jokingly sent
me a clip from the Godfather of Pacino and the
as soon as I think I'm out, they go and
pull me right back in. And that's what last night was.
They set an NBA franchise record for most threes and
a half with eighteen threes in the first half, they
became the first team in NFL history to do that
twice in a season, having done that against San Antonio
(37:42):
earlier in the year. They went off offensively. LaMelo Ball
returning from injury, I think, I want to believe, but
I think he's getting healthier. He'd certainly looked a part
last night. He was absolutely magnificent in every way you
hope LaMelo can be magnificent when he takes the floor.
He hit seven of those eighteen first half three pointers
(38:05):
in his return from a right ankle injury, and on
the game seven of nine from three point range in
the first half, finished eight of eleven from deep. Had
twenty eight points and thirteen assists in just over twenty
nine minutes. I mean, they were He was just tremendous,
and they, by the way, spoiled Trey Young's return from
injury last night from a knee injury. He only had
(38:28):
eight points and ten assists in twenty minutes. Not a
terrible stat line, but you know, eight points, ten assists
certainly not what you expect from Trey Young. But LaMelo
was incredible. Conka Nipple's mid range game, I told Smoke,
I mean, we know about the three point shooting, but
like that kid's his mid range deserves its own chapter
in the Bible. It's so incredible. I know that's probably,
you know, blasphemous to some people, but I mean it's
(38:49):
he is so much fun to watch. This team, when
fully constructed, is a blast to watch, man, Like, I
enjoyed that so much last night, Smoke, I know you
did too, And I hope it's not a tease. I
hope it's not just that, you know, flash of what
we thought and hoped they could be and then we
go right back to hard times as Hornets fans. But man,
(39:10):
how much fun did you have watching that last night?
It was like, oh, we're doing this. Oh oh my gosh.
They almost flew to lead. It's like, oh, here we go.
And it was a great game altogether. By the way,
Jalen Johnson was amazing on the other side for Atlanta,
and by.
Speaker 3 (39:24):
The way that people kind of grilled them for giving
him that money. Yep, he's lived up to it so far.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
He was one assist Shy that was close of a
forty point triple double. Really fick accent there. I know
he had forty three, eleven rebounds and nine assists. He
was incredible. Nikhil Alexander Walker had himself a night twenty
eight points, but the Hornets overcame all of it and
they won the game one thirty three to one twenty six. LaMelo,
(39:50):
how about LaMelo. They're up one twenty six, one twenty
three with I think just under thirty seconds left, and
LaMelo after a couple of really strong, impressive and timely
drives to the bucket with a step back three from
Iredell County and as it's going up, you got Eric
Kalla jelling the kill shot and it goes in. It
puts the Hornets up by six, and boy, I tell
(40:13):
you what, man it And that was just a blast.
That was so much fun to watch. And it was
great to see not just Con continue to be con
but to see LaMelo being peak LaMelo. That's that's just
what we all want, just for the kid to stay healthy,
to run the offense with the flash, with the tempo.
You know, he's not always going to shoot it like
(40:34):
he did last night, but he can shoot the hell
out of the basketball. And last night was just for
Hornets fans, even if it was only one night, and
let's hope it's the start of something else.
Speaker 3 (40:42):
What a magnificent night of basketball. Yeah, Brandon Miller did
a great job as well. He's now stacked two good
games together. But here's one of the things that kind
of really took me for a loop. T Johnson line.
You starting to notice him, Kyle a little bit. Yeah,
he looks like he's starting to, you know, not look
completely lost most of the time. And this is not
compared to last year. This is compared to win before
(41:04):
he got sent that back down to Greensboro.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
If he develops and pops, that's a game changer for
this organization. And we have seen steady improvement here in
year two. You can't argue that that kid, I thought
took a whole bunch of unnecessary heat from people last year,
certainly toward the end of the season when he had
a couple of let's just call him sports center, not
top ten moments, but his combination of size and athleticism
(41:30):
and the shooting ability, we always knew that if it
ever just came together for him with that complete package,
it could really just change the complexion of who they
want to be. And you're right off the bench last
night sixteen minutes, ten points, four rebounds and assist, had
himself a good night off the bench, but overall twenty
eight from LaMelo, twenty eight from con Kak Nipple for
(41:50):
who was six from twelve from Deep, twenty six for
Brandon Miller, who was great, had the highlight reel dunk,
which I'm pretty sure made the top ten this morning.
I didn't watch Sports Center, but there's no way it
couldn't have. Miles had sixteen last night on a pretty
good shooting night. Two ten off the bench from t
Jon Musa gave him five points, six rebounds, two assists
in eighteen minutes. Ryan Kalchbrenner, good night, eight four to
(42:11):
two and a block like you. Speaking of the centers,
I had somebody ask me a minute ago, KB, did
you see what Bill Simmons said about these guys? I
did you know? Bill Simmons, who has often throughout the
years been rather harsh on Charlotte, and much of it deserved,
was last night, I believe on his podcast or his
live stream, I forget which, but he said, hey, they
put up sixty six points in seventeen minutes against Atlanta
(42:35):
held on for a late win. Really fun style. They're
one big man away, good coach, Charles Lee, good new owners,
respected front office. All of a sudden, I just liked
the spot they're in and I love watching them. That
was Bill Simmons on the Hornets last night on his
live stream, and you know, it's interesting the way that
he put that there, one big man away. I do
(42:55):
like what they have at that spot between Musa and Kalk,
But could they use, you know, know, another elite center. Well, yeah,
nobody's turning that down. If one comes along, They're not
easy to come by, but if this team can find one, yeah,
it'd be amazing. And hopefully Ryan Kalkbrenner continues to get
better and Musa continues to improve. But I think last
night was again proof that you're, you know, per the reports,
even the reports of you know, con K Nipple becoming
(43:17):
the face of the franchise and LaMelo Ball being misgruntled
from all those weeks ago that he of course shot down.
The core messaging within all of that was still Yeah.
But they'd still like to see LaMelo, Brandon, Miles, and
con together on the floor for an extended period of
time because they think they can play postseason basketball with
that group, and you know, you look up and we
knew this yesterday that they were still just on the
(43:38):
outside of the play in looking in, And here we
are this morning. They're two and a half games out
of the play in with fifty five games left to go.
So we got a minute here, But can you please
win five straight? Can you go out and win four
or five straight games? That would make me start to
believe that this team might actually be able to do something.
But it can't be one spot impressive win, two decent
(44:00):
wins sandwich by three or four losses with a bad
win in the mix. You've got to win four in
a row, five of seven, like they've got to go
on some sort of run here over the next week
or two.
Speaker 3 (44:10):
Yeah, And I definitely think that there is a chance
for them to potentially do something like that in the
next week or two. I will say, I don't know
if you've noticed, Kyle, but you know what the record
is in the last ten five and five. Yeah, Okay,
that's about a two game improvement for what they were getting.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
That's a good point. So I think that is a
good sign.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
Just got to hopefully think that they can get more
healthy now because I don't know how long Colin Sexton's
going to be out. I don't know how long trade
Man's going to be out. Kj's doing about as good
as you can ask him to do. But you still
want to have someone like Colin Sexton come back as
soon as possible. The real question is now, when are
you going to get some of those guys back, and hopefully,
like what's been happening the last three years, you don't
(44:50):
take a soul for a soul and lose somebody right
as you get somebody back.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
That's true because that's been a problem over the last
two to three years. Yeah, a lot of texts coming
in on the Hornets. We'll read some of these when
we come back. We got the best audio in sports
and stick around twenty eight minutes away from Panthers legend
