Speaker 2 (00:20):
Will the Panthers be pretenders or contenders?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Will they follow up a resounding.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Win with another win? Or will they revert back to form?
In New England on Sunday? It's a football Friday here
on the show. And you know what we're asking for,
Monday headlines today seven oh four, five, seven oh ninety
six to ten. It's a tradition on this show, Monday headlines.
Of course we take them in all forms, but we start,
of course with the Carolina Panthers at the New England
(00:49):
Patriots on Sunday one o'clock from Foxboro in Jillette Stadium.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Give me Monday headlines today. What are we talking about?
Speaker 2 (00:56):
What's on the headline of Mike Kay's story in The Observer,
of Joe person story in the Athletic, and of course
the theme of our conversation all day long on Monday
as your Carolina Panthers head up to New England. And
it was really interesting last week when we of course
brought back this exercise like we do every single week.
Didn't seem like anybody felt the Carolina Panthers had a chance.
(01:17):
There was a whole bunch of cynicism and negativity, and
then we walked right right into a thirty to nothing
beat down of the Falcons. And so I would imagine
the tune is going to change a little bit this week,
although I have heard from fans this week that believe
there's a very real chance of a letdown and a
coming back to Earth on Sunday up in New England.
(01:37):
So your thoughts Monday headlines today seven oh four, five,
seven oh ninety six to ten. Hit us up on
the FanDuel text line same number if you want to
give us a call and chat the old fashioned way
on x formerly Twitter at Kyle Bailey Club. It's at
Kyle Bailey Club and emanating live from the Chandler VAULTA
Studios the Carolinas Personal Injury Lawyers. One call, that's all.
(01:59):
Go to cvlog dot com. We'll talk to Chip Patterson
of cbssports dot com coming up in forty two minutes,
and of course to cover three podcast and the CBS
Sports Network. Marty Snyder, NBC Sports Turner, Amazon NASCAR studio
host and Pitt reporter is back live from Kansas coming
up in four twenty five. We will of course talk
(02:19):
about the race this Sunday and the continuation of the
NASCAR Playoffs, but also reports yesterday one in particular from
Jeff Gluck of The Athletic that NASCAR Brass, the NASCAR
Brass considering scrapping the playoff format and going back to
the system that existed from nineteen seventy five to two
thousand and three, as Smoke reminded us yesterday, and that's
(02:40):
the straight up Winston Cup Points Series format of accumulating
points throughout the season and crowning a winner and a
champion in the final race on the schedule. So we'll
get to all that with Marty Snyder. And I did
just just check in with Nate Wimberley of WBTV, longtime
sports director, sports anchor out in our parking lot. And
again most of you know this by now, but we
share a bill here in uptown Charlotte with WBTV, so
(03:03):
I see Nate a lot. Somehow I have managed to
not see Nate at all this week up until today,
and of course Nate has covered all things Charlotte Sports,
Carolina Pro Sports for the last three decades essentially. But
he's from Georgia. He grew up a Falcons fan, and
I got a chance to have a little fun with
him in the parking lot about what happened with Atlanta Sunday.
(03:24):
So you will have that same opportunity Charlotte Cognizanti at
five o'clock to remind Nate Wimberley, a man who I
do think you should be able to trust, a man
who does love covering or all things professional sports here
in Charlotte, but does have that particular tie and did
pick his Falcons to win last week. And we'll come
in at five o'clock with some egg on his face,
had a little bit less pep in his step when
(03:45):
I saw him in the parking lot earlier today. So
all that's coming up Monday headlines today to get the
show started. And today, as you probably heard already, Anthony
Flounder Pagnata sitting in for Smoke Ludwig here on a Friday.
Smoke Ludwig is a proud North Lincoln alum, really celebrity,
and it's where his dad is coach football all these
(04:06):
years and he is headed back home tonight to fill
in as the PA announcer. Hey, there it is on
Friday Night lights the PA announcer. So these boys swap
shifts today. Smoke did a great job with Walker, and
we have Flounder in for the next three Baby and boy,
we're gonna have some fun.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
What's up, Founder? How are you?
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (04:22):
What's going on? What's going on? You get me on
a Drake May Friday?
Speaker 2 (04:26):
So I gotta be honest with you, man. I understand
your love for Drake May, but I was enraged when
I saw you in a Drake May Patriots Jersey yesterday.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
Well that's not the first time when I'm mowered in
here for the first time, you got mad at me
as well.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Did you think about it that it was going to
subside the second time you did it?
Speaker 5 (04:42):
I thought maybe a little bit. I thought maybe you
would soften your stance. I mean, what's your Do you
have a hatred towards Drake May? Just the Patriots? No
love Drake May. God, I love Drake May. I mean
I only got to sit down with him once for
about a twelve minute interview.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Loved him.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Got no problem with Drake May. No, I agree, love
the kid. But you know you're a Giants fan, and
it's one thing. If he was playing for me, we
own them.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
We own them, though, I know, so we can wear
their kind of stuff.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
You're gonna get really mad at me. Not Oh, okay,
go ahead. I do own two jerseys that would probably
get you very angry.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
One now, I never wore it, but I got it
in a kid size because I wanted it framed. That
would be Ryan Switzer's Cowboys jersey.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
And then I do have the irregular sized Washington Commander's
jersey from his rookie season.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Of Sam Howe. So okay, I do have both of those.
Speaker 5 (05:34):
I have worn the Sam Howell before as a Giants fan.
All right, well, I mean listen, I'm not anti Sam
Howell either, but you are wearing a Patriots jersey here
in the building the week that the Panthers take on
the Patriots, and you are a Giants fan, although it's
not an easy thing to be right now, is a
New York Giants fan. It hurts Kyle, it really does.
You know, Since twenty twelve, it's been a pretty painful ride.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
I was gonna say, you really, it's not that you're
a Panthers fan. But you know, I know you're not
anti Panther, you don't have no, absolutely not. You like me,
have been treated to a lot of really tough football
to watch over the last several years. So and then
it's on top of that, being guitar heels fan, you know,
it's been a little bit of a rough ride for you.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
So yeah, Mac Brown, by the way, looking pretty good.
Huh yeah, maybe a little bit not bad. How do
you feel about that? By the way, since since you
and I never get to work together in this capacity,
I know you've talked about this with Wes and Walker
some too, But how about that US Weekly article with
Jordan Hudson. This, I mean a frustrating moment obviously for
the program, for the fan base, hoping that she'd be
(06:34):
on a shelf somewhere, out of sight, out of mind
once the actual football started. No, you get bludgeoned by
UCF and the following week there's an US Weekly.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
She's on dust shelves, Yes, she's everywhere.
Speaker 5 (06:45):
Yeah, it's it's not what you want from a program perspective,
because again, by this point in the season, we thought
that the focus was supposed to be on football, and
I get it.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
They did not participate in the article.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
They were not the ones that said, hey, this is
the time that we want this article release. Sure, but
of course it comes out during a bye week when
the team is massively struggling. You have been embarrassed in
your first two Power four games. That's the thing to
me that just makes me face palm whenever I see
that pop up on social media.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
It's just like, are you serious?
Speaker 5 (07:18):
This is exactly what this program needs right now, in
the midst of already some bad publicity.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
No doubt that's it. Like you just you hope that
she'd be out of the news cycle. And you know,
there's this whole and the weird way they wrote it too.
I was kind of scanning it the other day, like,
you know, some think that she's just this opportunistic muse
and a gold No. I think we all think that,
Like there's it takes there. There are people that have
a differing opinion on her, like what is why is
she famous other than being you know, I'll be a
(07:44):
little bit crassier Bill Belichick's hood ornament, like that there's
nothing that she does that brings any relevance to the
program or anything along those lines.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
Yes, she's staying in the headlines.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
So yeah, all right, Well anyway, moving on, we'll get
back to that in just a bit. Some really, I mean,
I'm talking great college football coming up this weekend. It
is a lates. I was just checking the weather before
the show. You'll I keep bringing this up, but you know,
I'm gonna be forty later this year, and I'm noticing
myself doing more and more old man things. I check
the weather all the time, all the time. So I'm
(08:15):
checking the weather. My son's supposed to have his his
second te ball game tomorrow, right.
Speaker 6 (08:19):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Yeah, weather's not looking good for that.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, weather's not looking good for that, right, So you
know it's I'm bummed for him if it happens that way.
But I was also thinking to myself, you know, a
rainy Saturday on this particular Saturday might not be the
worst thing ever, because all day long it's loaded with
college football games that I really don't want to miss.
So I'll play catch with the boy in the living
room while we're watching college school.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
Yeah, I'll play catch with Fiddy in his living room.
Yeah that sounded weird. That sounded really well, doesn't he
have a girlfriend. Now I thought he had a girlfriend.
Now I was pretty sure he did. He does, he does,
but she lives in Seattle. They call her Seattle Sally.
So we'll be hanging out. We will be watching the games,
and luckily we do not have to take an atarial
game this week, so we will be locked in on
all of the college football.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
The only issue that I.
Speaker 5 (09:03):
Have is the two best games of the night on
the same time at the same time.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Why do you do that to us? Put one earlier
in the day?
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Man, I agree, one hundred percent, But how about on
top of that, Apparently Fox trying to pressure Penn State
not that long ago into making this white out game
a noon game so they could line it up with
big noon kickoff. Oh yeah, I mean yeah, because nothing
says white out and one of the best environments in
college football like trying the white out at noon because
Fox wants that to be the big noon kickoff game.
(09:31):
You'll hear that audio coming up in just a bit.
James Franklin referenced that. But I will say the white
out game at Penn State is one of those college
football bucket list items. I've never really been drawn to
Penn State for any particular reason, but I would like
to be there for a night game in a whiteout
sweet I'd love to experience that environment. I think it
would be absolutely amazing. All Right, seven oh four five,
seven oh ninety six ten, Hit us up on the
fan duel text line, we do have a lot to
(09:53):
talk about. And again Monday headlines today seven oh four
five seven oh ninety six ten, hit us up with
what you've got Carolina, Achille says headline for the second
straight weekend, Charlotte Natives come up empty against the hometown team.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
I like that, Okay, because last week Jalen Walker, I
think he's Jalen Walker, James Pierce Junior. There's probably another
one or two that I'm missing out there, but he's
alluding to Drake May of course coming up empty against
the hometown team. I am afraid I am a little
bit nervous about this game. And it's not because of
any logical football reason. It's because, as of right now,
(10:32):
this moment in time, I still don't have any inherent
belief that Carolina is ready for this situation. I want
to believe that, and there's even a chance that I'll
go in and make a pick on Sunday on the
pregame show with completely my heart, like I might abandon
all logic and make a heart pick because it would
be so massive for this team to go up there
and pick up a second straight win. Not against a
(10:53):
great New England team. We know that they know that,
and I'm talking about their fans and media. They're not
a great New England team. One win was rather suspect.
It was against a bad team that is on the
verge of firing its head coach and may do so
this week if they do lose again. So it's not
even about the team itself. But I have been to
a game in Foxborough, as many of you probably have,
or at least some of you have. It is one
(11:14):
of the more raucous, and you know, let's be honest,
nastier environments in all of pro sports. I literally watched
a Patriots fan vomit, I believe, intentionally on the head
of a Ravens fan in a playoff game at Foxborough
one night. I will forever believe that that man aimed
and did that on purpose, you know, just to be
inhospitable to visiting fans. But anyway, it's not an easy
place to play. This Panthers team, as we've seen a
(11:37):
couple of times, unfortunately, has not only started slow, but
given the ball away at the top of games, and
that's an environment where things can swell on you. And
the Patriots are going to be I'm sure motivated, fired up,
ticked off about the way that they played last week
against the Steelers. We just found out earlier today that
Mike Vrabel announced that their defensive coordinator has been diagnosed
(11:57):
with cancer, which is awful, and of course, as a human,
my first thoughts and prayers go out to their defensive
coordinator and hope that everything works out okay. But my
second thought is, oh, man, you know, they're also going
to probably be a little a little bit fired up
to play well for a guy that means a lot
to them. So can Carolina match the energy early in
the game. Can they come out focused to start this
(12:18):
game and get off to another good start. Ideally you
can go down the field and score and take an
early lead and you know, let that defense get out
there and go back.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
About it's work like we saw last week.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
But therein lies another concern because now it looks like
officially we're not going to get dj Wantam or Pat
Jones out there. The two Minnesota defectors who now play
on the Carolina edges, which means a lot of rookies
in Nick Scorton and Prince Leumann Miellen on Sunday, and
that means opportunities.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
And I like both of those young guys.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
But you know, you worry about consistency in rookies and
especially in a tight game on the road.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
Will they make the big plays?
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Will they avoid mental mistakes, penalties, things of that nature.
So some defensive injuries have you a bit concerned about that?
And then of course offensively, you've allay reready plugged in
two backup offensive linemen. Tedero McMillan looks good to go
for this weekend. Doesn't sound like Xavier Leaguet's going to go,
which is a whole story unto itself. J T Sanders
with the high ankles brain, he's not going to be
able to play this week still know Jalen Coker, So
(13:13):
will they be able to find a way offensively on
the road. To me, this win would be really validating
for Dave Canalis and his system and his culture. If
you can go up there and having to plug in.
You know, a couple of twos. I mean you're going
to be running at times with twos and threes at
certain positions, not most of them, but a couple of positions.
If you can go win on the road in a
(13:35):
tough atmosphere, follow up a great performance at home with
a win on the road, I think people will start
to believe that organizationally, culturally, operationally, that the Panthers might actually,
you know, start to know what they're doing in a
situation like this because they have they seem to have
Atlanta's number. That seems to be one thing that under
Dave Canalis so far they have done pretty successfully is
(14:00):
eat Atlanta. Now you want to see them do it
against another team and in this case, going on the
road to be able to do it.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
You know, this could be a team that is really
good at home.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
I mean, they sure looked like they had the case
that you could build a case around that with what
we saw last weekend, that maybe this is just a
team that once they get into their own environment, they're
fans behind them, they're gonna perform pretty well this season.
But you want to see them actually do it on
the road against a team that is very winnable because
when you get to the end of the schedule, it's not.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Gonna be as easy to pick up those road wins.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
So you want to start building some of those right now,
building some of that momentum, and yes, putting some trust
in your head coach that he can actually get these
guys ready to go. It's all about the fast start
for me, because we've seen two games where they've started
off incredibly slow. They get down and from there it
changes what you are doing offensively. You cannot run the
football at that point. You have to throw it to
(14:53):
try to get yourself back into the game. I understand
that we didn't see them run the ball a ton
in this last game, but it felt like they were
able to dictate a little bit more what they were
going to do. They dictate their own game plan. So
I think that's what you should hope for again in
New England is just get off to enough of a
fast start where even if you're not blowing them out,
you're at least leading or you know, close in this
(15:15):
game where you can run your own offense and do
the things that you want to do.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
Yeah, Zach and Miami on the FanDuel text line said, KB,
the only way the Panthers lose is Bryce being Bryce.
Now take that with a block of salt, because Zach
and Miami is not a Bryce fan and has said
to me multiple times that he would like to see
Hendon hooker at some point very soon. So listen, I'm
a Hendon hooker, stand is what I am. But that's
a ridiculous thing to say. But I will say this.
Bryce absolutely has to take care of the football and
(15:43):
he did against the Falcons. He was efficient. You know,
he took what was given to him enough in the
run game. You know, he has to play another clean game. Yes,
your quarterback needs to make plays, and no one's lowering
the bar for him. But you're not talking about going
into Philly where you know, hey, if you're going to
beat that team on the road, the quarterback is going
to really have to make some places. You're going in
(16:03):
to face a New England team where Drake's played pretty good,
and I think Drake's a good player and will be
a good quarterback in this league for a good long while.
But they're still regrouping and rebuilding, and you know, they
got young pieces and they're still searching for more talent,
So you cannot give them anything if you can avoid
helping the Patriots out on Sunday on the road. Obviously,
we know this is a very beatable football team. So
(16:25):
Bryce with another clean sheet, to me, is critically important.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
I think that certainly is important, and I think that
he has a chance to do that.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
I mean, you look at this New England defense.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
What really scares you about this group probably what they
are as a run defense. That's the only thing that
maybe you look at and say, yeah, you know, they
could slow down this Panthers run game, make it a
little bit one dimensional. The problem is if they are
gonna make it one dimensional, they're one of the worst
pass defenses in the entire league. Yeah, so this is
an area where Bryce might be able to pick them
(16:54):
apart a little bit. I know he doesn't have Xavier
league get but we saw it last week. It looked
like the offense moved a little bit more smoothly with
him on the sidelines. I'm not saying that that's going
to be every week. Maybe this is the week where
you do actually end up missing excel, but you never know, man,
Bryce and Tremaine has been playing pretty well so far.
He catches the passes that he you know, most people
(17:16):
don't expect him to be able to catch.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
You've still got.
Speaker 5 (17:20):
Hunter Renfro, who I think is improving each week that
he's out there on the field. And then I don't
know how New England, especially if Christian Ezales is unable
to play for them, how are they going to be
able to contain Tedoroa McMillan.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
I don't know that they can.
Speaker 5 (17:35):
I think the Panthers that should be their game plan
going into this game is win with this passing game.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Although I am hearing that Christian Ezales will play on Sunday,
I'm hearing this a decent chance he plays, of honey,
if he's out there, he's not gonna be one hundred percent. Well, listen,
I think there's a lot that's interesting about that story.
There's no doubt about it, and we'll talk about it more.
I also want to come back and play some audio
of Xavier league Getz speaking to the media after practice yesterday,
peppered with questions from David Newton and Joe Person and
(18:03):
others in the scrum and Excel sounds like a very
different version of Excel in certain ways. We'll get to
it all next Sports Radio ninety two to seven wf
and Z Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z.
(18:24):
Ryder Cup Weekend.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
It's a guy.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
It's a great sports weekend, isn't it. NFL Major College
Football weekend. We're hitting the end of the baseball regular season,
two playoffs just around the corner, and the Ryder Cup
this week as well. Right now, Europe up three to
one after the early matches on the first day.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
You big Ryder Cup guy or not.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
I've gotten into it this year a little bit because
it's in Bethpage Blash, which is of course on Long Island,
pretty close to where I used to live. When I
make a fit a golf course on the place like
Long Island, oh yeah, yeah, oh they will, they will.
But yeah, I mean, not the start that you were
hoping for from the Americans. But I got to tell you,
when I saw the rosters of the two rosters, I
thought to myself, how is America really supposed to compete?
(19:06):
They're really banking on the environment to help these guys.
I don't think it really matters, to be honest with
you, you don't. Yeah, now it's not looking like it right now.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
Not early on.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
You know, it's a rare event, happens only every two years,
alternating between the US and European courses. And golf, of course,
is this typically etiquette driven, very polite and very individual sport.
But the Ryder Cup is loud, it's emotional, it's team driven.
Fans cheer like it's a football game. I heard someone
(19:37):
earlier say that this is the only real golf tournament
that feels like a sporting event otherwise, and I'm sure
some of the golf peerists would you know, turn their
noses up or be upset with that.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
Yet the Waste Management Open right out there in Phoenix
where they throw stuff in the air.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
When guys, that's.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
More like a hybrid music festival golf tournament, you know
what I mean. Yeah, And even some of the guys
say it gets Oh, it's.
Speaker 5 (19:57):
Too rowdy out there, it's a little bit too much,
and it's like, no, this is what most other sporting
events are like fallas, Yeah, it's kind of like it's
maybe more like a Kentucky Derby golf tournament hybrid at
the Waste Management Open, where a lot of people go
out and they're not even there for the golf.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
They don't even care if they see the golf. Yeah,
that's true, you know what I mean, same thing with
the horse racing in Kentucky, but like with this one,
they're cheering. I mean, it's US versus Europe. And we
got some audio to play coming up in just a
bit as Rory McElroy declared the United States the greatest
country in the world, and I'm inclined to agree, but
you know he's upset some of the Natives with that statement.
So we'll get to that shortly. We got big college
(20:32):
football to talk about. But we're talking about the NFL
Carolina Panthers at the New England Patriots right now, your
Monday headlines today. But I also wanted to play this
Xavier League get who struggled mightily in the first two
games of the season. Former first round pick got to
South Carolina up and down rookie year finished kind of
limping to the finish line with some injuries. We all
(20:52):
know the story at this point, but did not play
Sunday against the Falcons. Developed a hamstring injury about the
middle of last week that caught a lot of people
off guard. And I again am not a person that
questions the injuries of athletes because I don't know how
they feel and maybe his hamstring really is tweaked or
whatever the case may be. But after listening to Xavier
league Get yesterday speaking with the media after practice, I
(21:14):
think we've been given a very different picture.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
Let's check out what he had to say.
Speaker 4 (21:18):
Is this a.
Speaker 7 (21:18):
Situation where if this were, say, a playoff game or something, you.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Might push through it or is you having trouble pushing.
Speaker 7 (21:26):
Off of it or knowing whatever they need to need
to do.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
What's it feeling like, cats? How does it feel different
than usual?
Speaker 7 (21:35):
I'm through the sellar right now.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Coach told us how you begged the last week to
let you play? How tough has it been to have
to sort of sit back in and watch?
Speaker 7 (21:45):
You know, I want to be in a game. I mean,
I'm going to do so much of what they want
me to do, so I don't.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
Know how to do.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
Is this a case where you want to play and
they're saying no, you're not ready to?
Speaker 7 (22:00):
Oh no, no, it ain't nothing like that.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
And if you feel like this, you're gonna be sitting
out another week. That's what you mean.
Speaker 7 (22:08):
It's the coaches too, whatever, they want me to do.
What do you want to do if I if I can,
if I'm able to.
Speaker 6 (22:16):
That's would you say though right now physically your handstring
is not ready to playing a game.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
I wouldn't say that.
Speaker 7 (22:25):
Oh I maybe have to be a little limited or
something like that, or maybe I could play. Oh no,
this is a day to day said Jayce.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
All Right. I actually I feel for the kid. I do.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
I feel for him. He's trying to handle that media
scrum where he's being peppered with. These reporters are doing
what they're paid to do. They're asking questions, they're trying
to get more of an answer. You know, he's been
he's been put out there, you know, as available to
the media. So you know, I heard some people earlier
say like why why are these guys pet That's their job.
These guys are there too ask questions on behalf of
(23:01):
their media outlets to try to get answers for the
people like Panthers fans who read their stuff. The Panthers
made him available, and I think all things considered, he
handled it pretty well. But he does sound beaten down.
He really sounds disappointed, and it sounds obviously like there's
more he wants to say, but he knows better than
to say it. At this point, when you're saying, oh,
I'm solid, okay, that's you telling us that you think
(23:22):
you're healthy enough to play. Like there was a follow up,
would you say your hamstring is is such that you
couldn't No, I wouldn't say that. I'm going to do
whatever the coaches want me to do. It's the coaches
and the trend. He's telling you everything you need to
know right there. He thinks he's healthy enough to play.
A lot of folks felt like he was probably healthy
enough to play last week. I don't know that. Maybe
he wasn't. But here we are again. Hasn't practice. That's
(23:44):
the other thing, not even practicing. So if you err
on the side of or lean more toward no, he's
actually hurt, all right. He's not practicing. You'd think if
this was a silent benching, maybe he'd be out there
getting reps at practice and you know, working more and
maybe not playing on Sunday or playing as much. But
he's not even practicing right now. And I've got people
already on the text line saying he needs a fresh start.
He's got to be on the trading block at this
(24:06):
it feels too early for that for me, but maybe
it's not.
Speaker 5 (24:09):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
We've seen crazier things in the NFL. First and foremost,
I feel for the young man. I think he's got
a lot of potential, a lot of talent, great athleticism,
and he seems like a really nice young man. But
listening to him talk right there, it's both sadness and frustration,
and he's holding back from what he really wants to say,
And like a lot of people, I'm just left wondering
(24:31):
flounder what that all means for the immediate future but
also the next several weeks.
Speaker 5 (24:35):
Yeah, I mean saying that he's on the trading block
I think might be a little bit too much. But
it certainly is interesting when you're hearing that I am solid,
I'm ready to go, and for some reason they're still
not playing you or practicing you. I do think it
is It is a little head scratching, because why would
(24:56):
if he feels like he is healthy enough to play,
you would feel like you would at least see him
at practice. But I guess, yeah, maybe they are really
trying to get a look at some of these other
guys and say, let's see how these guys compete out
there instead of Xavier. Do they fit our offense a
little bit better? And maybe they are contemplating a move
already off of him. I do find that a little
(25:17):
hard to believe, though, just because of how much we
have heard them say he is working when in the
offseason he's putting in the work, he's just not getting
the results. So I don't know if this is something
where they are trying to hold him out just to
be cautious. Remember that towards the end of last year
very beat up was playing through, you know, multiple injuries,
(25:39):
and maybe they just want to make sure that he
doesn't get to a spot like that again because they
think it limits how effective he can be. But it
is kind of mind blowing to me that he has
not been out on the practice field and really that
we haven't heard any clarification as to what exactly is
going on with him and why he's being held out.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
Okay, all right, we get texters blowing us up right
now on the FanDuel text line. Let me get to
a couple of these, then I'll take a phone call.
TC said, I think he caught too much heat the
first two weeks. Did he not play well? Yes, but
who did? I don't think he caught too much heat.
It wasn't just you know, talking heads like me and
the media that we're pointing out his you know, his shortfalls.
(26:20):
It was former players too, Like there were guys with
you know, real NFL credentials pointing at him and saying,
what are you doing? Why are you even on the
field if you're going to do things like this. So,
I mean, we can debate whether or not he caught
too much heat, but he made a lot of mistakes
and they were all self inflicted. And he said, a
first round pick going into his second year, they're trying
to get off to a quick start, and he's doing
the things that make them question whether or not they
(26:40):
can trust him. It's one thing to drop a ball.
It's even another thing to not get your feet down.
It's the lack of blocking, you know, It's the lack
of awareness on the field when you're trying to go
hurry up. It's all the things that we've seen so far,
and it opens the door for some of the speculation
that we're seeing. You know, a Texter here said, reports
are the Cowboys and Browns like him. Okay, well, I
mean maybe, I guess, but I don't think the Panthers
(27:02):
are out on him unless there's more behind the scenes
that we're not aware of, and that's always possible, as
we've learned over the years. You would also have to
be really really sure about a guy like Bryce and Tremaine,
Oh yeah, somebody else on this roster. You don't know
when Coker's going to hit the ground running. I mean,
he might be back in a week, but he might
not be himself. So I mean, if you're moving off
(27:22):
that guy and you're already making plans for it, you
really got to think that you can roll with what
you've got.
Speaker 5 (27:28):
Something something, there's something else going on behind the scenes
if that move is made. Honestly, I don't see that
being a move that they make just out of the
blue because oh, somebody's expressing interest. This is not the
third year, fourth year of him being on the team.
If it was, then maybe we're in a different spot.
But I don't think this is Jonathan Mingo for example. Yeah,
(27:50):
I don't think they're there yet. I don't, but then again,
we'll have to wait and see. Let's go to the
phone lines. Doug in Winston Salem wants to talk about this, Doug,
what's going on?
Speaker 6 (27:58):
Yeah, I guess thanks for having me on. Uh. Leget's
definitely being shopped. Uh, that's what That's part of what's
going on. He could play and he should be playing,
but he's not because they don't want to get him
hurting and they get nothing for him, so they'll probably.
Speaker 4 (28:11):
Just do it.
Speaker 6 (28:12):
They're probably just shopping him out just to see what's
out there and see what they can get. Should have
never left feeling, should left kept him, should have kept
him at least one more year because this is uh,
this is you know, this team's not progressing. They won
last week. That's one victory, one victory. We'll see how
it is the rest of the year. And can I
s what cheers to talk about Ryder coupes for a second.
(28:33):
We're we're getting boat raced. Could be seven to one
here very quickly, and in an hour's time it could
be seven to one. This could get ugly. We're we're
we're down in every match. We're down at least two.
Uh yeah, we're down at all four, you know, we're
and then and the d Chambeau and and j T
(28:54):
got boat races this morning, so it doesn't look good
up for the United States. And I agree with you guys,
this is not the most talented group and they're counting on.
But the Europeans wanted more than we do, and we
want to get paid. We've been trying to get paid
since nineteen ninety nine. Now we're insistent on getting paid.
Luve Donald took advantage of that made some pretty derogatory
(29:15):
comments about getting paid. And it doesn't take much Baltimore
to get these Europeans fired up. They don't really care
where they play. They just they want it more than
we do. That's just the bottom line, Doug.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
I appreciate the phone call, buddy, thank you for wig in.
Doug's insistent right there that that Legett is being shopped
super Bowl. Scotty just said, he said, did they not
make Tremaine a captain last week? I'd say they made
it clear. Well can you have that much? And I'm
just asking, can you have that much faith in Bryce
and Tremaine at this point? I mean, maybe you do,
(29:47):
we absolutely, but I just don't how do you justify that?
Like that's a gut field type of call. Maybe you
end up being right. But if that's the way this
plays out, that's that's a big risk me.
Speaker 5 (29:56):
I mean, you either have that much trust in him
or you really try us David Moore, which I mean,
I don't know, maybe Coach Canalis does. We know he
does have an affinity for David Moore, but that to
me seems that seems wild that you would be shopping
him after I mean, again, what did we see from
him as rookie year? There were flashes. This is not Mingo,
(30:17):
this is not Terris Marshall. Junior guys. There were flashes
from him. So I find it hard to believe unless
he is really being a pain in the rear end
behind the scenes, which from everything that we've heard, that's
not the type of guy that he is. I just
I just cannot see them moving off of him this early.
Let's take one more phone call Carolina. Kelly wants to
talk to Xavier league yet. What's up, Kelly? How are
(30:37):
you Bud doing well?
Speaker 8 (30:39):
How about yourself doing well? I think any talk of
him being shopped, that's ridiculous. People are jumping the gun.
We had receivers that we took three four five years.
Tight ends that you know Thomas played how many years
before we let go of him. There's no way you
let go of the first round wide receiver that you
traded up for after eighteen nineteen twenty games. I think
(31:03):
with more likely, and I'd like your opinion on this.
They're trying to humble them. It was a lot of
alsor fields, not issues, but austerfield, you know, celebrity and
you know, keep the main thing the main thing, and
they're trying to humble him and bring the focus back.
That's what I think is going on.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
What do you think, I know, I think you're I
would air more towards your side of things right now.
I have a hard time believing that this early, already
they've already waved the white flag on him. And if
they think they can get by with him without him
for another week and they can just leave him on
the shelf to think about getting better, to stew on
it to, you know, really look inward about the kind
of player he wants to be. There could be some
(31:39):
some psychological tactics going on here. I appreciate you, Kelly,
thank you for the phone op. I didn't know he
was done. Sorry about that, Kelly, text me Buddy, seven
oh four, five, seven oh ninety six ten. We got
Chip Patterson coming up, So we go to flounder on
the headlines.
Speaker 5 (31:54):
All right, Kyle, when we go back to last night
where the East Carolina Pirates were, they pretty dominant performance
over the US Army, the US Army Knights. They last
night only put up six points in this game, a
twenty eight to six win for East Carolina. They score
twenty one in the first half. Cayden Howser fifteen to
(32:14):
twenty two, two hundred and fifty one yards and two
touchdowns in this game. A strong all around performance from
East Carolina and now sitting three and two on the season,
one to zero in the American This was a nice
bounce back, Kyle, for the Pirates after they were thoroughly
beat by a really good BYU team.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
That is true, they also own Army. They've beaten them
nine out of the last ten games. They got to
Now if they truly are a different football team after BYU,
We'll get an answer next Thursday at Tulane against John
Somemrock gony game.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
That's gonna be.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
That's gonna be a big Thursday night game for ECU.
What else you got that's it. We'll come back Chip
Patterson cbssports dot com, CBS Sports Network in the Cover
three Pod when we return Sports Radio ninety two to
seven WFNZ Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z KB
(33:19):
and Flounder here with you on a Football Friday. Smoke
and Flounders swapping shifts today. Smoke is off to do
some pa work for a high school football game tonight.
So Flounders sitting in here on a football Friday seven
oh four, five, seven oh ninety six to ten, hit
us up on the FanDuel text line talking about the
Panthers taking your Monday headlines today, hopefully talking college football
(33:40):
here in just a moment with Chip Patterson of cbssports
dot Com and the Cover three Podcast. We're trying to
connect with him at the moment. Big games littered throughout
the weekend and even a game tonight between Virginia and
Florida State. That it's it's probably gotten to that realm
of too many people, I think any are pointing out
(34:01):
that Virginia thirtieth anniversary knocked off the number one team
in the country in Florida State thirty years ago. It's
become kind of a sexy pick. I think Florida State
comes out and takes care of business tonight. Now I
will say Chandler Morris the Virginia offense, Tony Elliot's done
a really nice job. I thought that guy was in
the real danger zone in terms of being finished in
(34:24):
Charlottesville after this year. But UVa's gotten off to a
great start and they're an interception late in that shootout
against NC State from being unbeaten.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
Four and oh, don't remind me. I know, I know,
I know.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
So let's talk about that and everything else going on
this weekend with Chip Patterson cbssports dot com, CBS Sports
Network on your television sets, and of course the Cover
three podcast Talk in College Football. He's back with us
for a Friday conversation, Chip, what do you think about
this UVA Florida State matchup tonight here on a Friday night?
Does Florida State roller? Does UVA put a scare into them?
Speaker 9 (34:56):
UVA can definitely put a scare into them. I don't
know if they're going to be able to win the game,
because I know Uba is going to be able to
get stopped. They're getting healthier on defense, but I still
don't think that against quality competition, Virginia's defense is to
be trusted, and like, let's be honest, Florida State is
far more than quality competition. The way that Gus Malsan
has this team running the football like they are potentially
(35:18):
one of the most dangerous and diverse rushing attacks in
the entire country. Now they've been doing it against Tomato
Cans for the most part ever since they played Alabama.
But I look at this game and I think that
it is the.
Speaker 4 (35:30):
Spot of all spots.
Speaker 9 (35:31):
Right You're it's a Friday night, You're going up to Charlottesville,
You've got Miami on deck at home. You know, just
sort of everything that's going to be buzzing, pointing and building.
Speaker 4 (35:41):
Back in that direction.
Speaker 9 (35:43):
So can this defense be locked in? Because I do
think that that's the one part that we have not
gotten a chance to see Ty Simpson in the opener
I just thought.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
Was a little bit off.
Speaker 9 (35:53):
I think Alabama had a lot of chances that they
didn't capitalize on. So I don't know how good this
defense is.
Speaker 4 (36:00):
It That's what I'm trying to figure out.
Speaker 9 (36:02):
That's clearly what will be on display as they have
to defend Shaman Morris so can they put a scare
into them? Yeah, because I think they can score some points,
so I think they can win. My answer is no,
because I don't think they can get stopped.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Okay, if if Florida State, you know, takes care of
business tonight and we get Miami Florida States, you know,
one of the biggest matchups in that series next weekend.
I know we're kind of looking ahead here a little bit,
I am anyway, but that appears to already be the
game of the year in the ACC. How massive will
that game be next weekend?
Speaker 9 (36:32):
Massive enough that the Cover three podcast is gonna be
live from downtown tallahad.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
Let's get on Friday.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
Oh that's huge.
Speaker 4 (36:40):
Look, look, this is gonna be a boss.
Speaker 9 (36:45):
Like I think that the both of those programs just
sort of like the arc and what they've been building
to and the journey, it's gonna be potentially, you know,
one of two matchups that we see between those teams.
So I and I am fired up for it. But again,
like we have seen, Miami have to play better teams
(37:06):
than Florida State. That's what I do think makes the
UVA game so key is because now we get to
learn a little bit more about the seminoles, which will
inform all of our analysis, discussion and picks going into
the game against Miami.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
So let me stay in the ACC for a second.
A rather quiet weekend in this conference after tonight, But
number eighteen Georgia Tech does go to Winston Salem to
face Wake Forest tomorrow. You know, Jake Dickard and company
a little better than I thought after Week one against Kennesaw,
But I still expect Georgia Tech to go up there
and get a win tomorrow. What's the How real is
the path in your mind for Georgia Tech to make
(37:40):
the College Football Playoff?
Speaker 9 (37:42):
Well, I mean as a as a eleven to one
team or as an at large you've got a shot,
which is something that's very possible given their path as
an ACC champion, which is something that I think is
possible given the quality of the team. So it is
I would say that I would put Georgia Tech in.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
How about this? You know it's a pie, right, Not.
Speaker 9 (38:05):
Everybody from the ACC is all going to have the
same opportunity. I've probably taken a little bit out of
the SMU splice the pie given it to Georgia Tech,
I might have taken a little bit out of the
Louisville slice of pie just in terms of overall quality
that I've seen from the cards so far this year,
and give that to Georgia Tech. So yeah, I mean
(38:25):
they are in that mix. If it's not going to
be Florida State and if it's not going to be
Miami and you need to grab somebody else from the ACC.
To me, there is no question that is the Georgia
Tech yellowjacket.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
Now, I do not think they are dominant enough.
Speaker 9 (38:39):
To survive a game where they are not playing their
best football. I think that they are. And this is
one thing that is good given the way that haines
Kan plays football.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
They are healthy enough.
Speaker 9 (38:49):
At the backup quarterback position that if Haineskin gets hurt
or needs to rest, Aaron Filo is more than ready
to answer the call right there. So that helps your
chances one hundred percent. But you just got to be
real thick about this because, as I've said a couple
of times in a couple of different places, this is
still the Atlantic Coast Conference, the most crabs in a
bucket type league. Anytime anybody has it all going in
(39:10):
their direction, you are liable to get nabbed and nipped
by somebody who jumps up from the bottom of the conference.
So that's like, yeah, like sure, of course I can
see it. But can Georgia Titan be trusted enough that
they're just going to one play to peak efficiency the
rest of the way.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
Absolutely not.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Chip Patterson cbsports dot Com Cover three podcasts hanging out
with us here for a Friday conversation Clemson. The next
time we talk next week will be previewing North Carolina
and Clemson Jokes Flying this week. That game will be
on ten AM at the Cartoon Network because you know,
the conditions are very different than we thought. But obviously
there's a big picture conversation taking place about both programs,
(39:52):
but Clemson in particular, after this god awful start that
was really unexpected. Where where is Clemson football right now?
Speaker 3 (39:58):
Big picture.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
Soul searching on a.
Speaker 9 (40:01):
Walk about Yeah, I mean they've they because the thing is,
it's got to happen internally, and there's no amount of
pointing to the faces on the walls. There's no amount
of like, you know, trying to trying to will it
into existence. They've got to go get it done. And
(40:22):
I'm curious because Kate Klubnet in twenty twenty three looked
awful at the beginning of the year, and Clemson started
four and four through eight games, but they won the
last four games of the season, including a win over
a ranked Notre Dame team. They beat Kentucky in the
bowl game. They finished nine and four. It wasn't the
double digit wins, but you were like, hey, this Thumpston team.
Speaker 4 (40:45):
Turned it around.
Speaker 9 (40:46):
I mean, Kyle, honestly, that's the best case scenario that
they just they find something internally, they dig in, they
get some real leadership from that talented group, and they
come out and play.
Speaker 4 (40:58):
Because right now, I just I just I.
Speaker 9 (41:01):
Don't see it from their quarterback cake clubnck. I don't
see it from the defense that just seems to be
I mean, I mean sometimes I'm like, are they playing
with like ankle weights on? There's just not There's just
not like a pop, there's not an extra step. They're
not just the communication isn't there, The closing speed isn't
always there. I just they're in a fault man, and
(41:23):
they can turn this around. They can you know, finish
with a They can finish this thing. From where they're
sitting right now. You know, with seven eight wins on
the season, give themselves a chance.
Speaker 4 (41:33):
To go get nine in the bowl game.
Speaker 9 (41:35):
But man, they need somebody to step up, and no
one from the outside, and no one from the outside
is going to be able to do it. And I
don't even know if we can trust anybody from the
coaching staff to be able to do it.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
This is one that's got.
Speaker 9 (41:46):
To happen with the players. So it's a real gut
check time for the Tigers.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
All right, Chip, all of us who are die hard
college football fans are faced with a great dilemma tomorrow
evening at seven thirty, as we'll have both Oregon Penn
State and Alabama Georgia on at the exact same time.
I know you're going to see both of these games
in their entirety, but which game gets preference on the
big TV tomorrow night?
Speaker 3 (42:05):
Which one gets the audio?
Speaker 9 (42:07):
I don't think that the Penn State Oregon game holds
slightly more significance from the national picture because both Penn
State and Oregon will not have as many opportunities to.
Speaker 4 (42:21):
Log huge like huge wins.
Speaker 9 (42:25):
With playoff implications. The way that both Alabama and Georgia
will there are games left on Alabama schedule. There are
games left on Georgia schedule, multiple games that are going
to be against teams that are at ranked inside the
top ten, the top fifteen, and so on from the
College Football Playoff rankings or the rankings however you want
to look at them. That is not necessarily the case.
(42:47):
In fact, for Penn State, they've got this game against Oregon,
They've got a game at Ohio State, and then depending
on what happens with some other teams in the Big Ten,
I don't know how many other games they're going to
be for Penn State be able to get out there
and make a statement other than their win column an Oregon.
Speaker 4 (43:04):
Same thing.
Speaker 9 (43:05):
You know, this was one of those spots where we
looked at it and like, Okay, this is one of
those huge games. If they win it, now all of
a sudden, they're in this big position. So I think
that that's the one that you say because Alabama Georgia.
Speaker 4 (43:19):
Is going to be an awesome game and so much fun.
Speaker 9 (43:23):
But I don't think it's I think both those teams
will get more tracks at it. The winner and the
loser both don't come out as different as they were
going in before.
Speaker 2 (43:31):
I let you go. Any thoughts on the Ryder Cup
underway today? Of course, the Europeans have already jumped out
to an early lead and they're the heavy favorites anyway,
but thoughts on what we've seen so far?
Speaker 9 (43:42):
Why was Cam Young ever doubted as a part of
this team? I mean, just like carry in the team,
go Deeks and go acc He's getting it done right now,
and so with Scottie Scheffler absolutely shrinking, it's great to
see Cam Young rising the occasion.
Speaker 3 (43:59):
All Right, we'll see plays out. Chip. Have a great weekend, brother,
We'll talk to you next Friday.
Speaker 4 (44:03):
Sounds good, y'ally well.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
Jip pattersoncbsports dot Com with us each and every Friday,
CBS Sports Network, the Cover three podcast alongside Tom for
Nelly b Elliott and Danny Kanell. Love that podcast. Appreciate
Chip each and every week. Didn't somebody said you didn't
get to NC State Virginia Tech.
Speaker 3 (44:19):
We didn't.
Speaker 2 (44:20):
It also carries very little national significance at this point,
though regionally we clearly have people that care. Wes Bryant's
on the game, so that's a great tear watch our guy, Wes.
He'll be on the sidelines tomorrow. NC State's a ten
and a half point favorite in that game. Ten and
a half points. Now, I truly believe they'll win the game.
But can you imagine, like even in a year where
(44:40):
some NC State fans are really willing to give Dave Dorin, Hey,
this is kind of lost both coordinators offenses there, but
the defense isn't. I've had multiple State fans tell me, hey,
well we got CJ. Let's look to twenty twenty six.
Get the defense right. Things are going to be okay,
limited expectations for twenty twenty five, but can you imagine
if they find a way to lose that game tomorrow.
(45:02):
