Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet. Today our number two
(00:25):
Sports Radio ninety two seven w f n Z, the
Show powered by Victory Chevrolet.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Go to Victory Chevrolet dot com. See what my boy
Brandon Gandy's got to offer. I'll spoil it for you.
Lots of Silverados, go get a Chevy Silverado at Victory Chevrolet.
Go to Victory Chevrolet dot com. Nick Carboni's back in
twenty four minutes. He will be fresh out of the
Panthers locker room talking with players after what happened Sunday
against Seattle, the show down with Tampa on Saturday, but
(00:53):
also last night's development the Falcons beating the Rams on
Monday Night Football and opening up another portal for the
Panthers to make the playoffs. And I do need to
point out that more people are checking in on the
text line to say, hey, has KB had a chance?
And one guy said, has KB had a chance? To
reflect on his no yesterday? Late in this show, what
(01:13):
do you want me to say? Man? Did you believe
in the Falcons before yesterday. I had one guy who
texted the show late when Smoke was starting to ask me, KB,
do you think the Falcons can And I cut him
off and I said no. And then we went to
break and one guy was like, I don't know, KB,
they've been playing better lately and Yadi, and then everybody
else was like, yeah, I don't see it happening. And
then last night on Twitter as it's happening, and throughout
(01:35):
the course of the first hour of the show, people
checking in to say, has KB had a chance to
reflect on his error yesterday? Late in the show, Well,
yes I have. What was I said? What did you
believe in the in the Falcons? Did you want to
believe in the Falcons? Of course not. You never want
to believe in the Falcons, your Panthers fans, for God's sake,
come on, I wanted to believe last night.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
But then again, even when they were up twenty one nothing,
I'm like, they're gonna mess this up.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Well, waiting for the other shoe to drop is what
you were doing like everybody else. So I mean, it's awesome,
it's great news. We'll talk about all of it with
Nick Carboni coming up in twenty three minutes. Also Al
Wallace back at five. We'll talk a lot about what
went wrong against Seattle, what he thinks the game on
Saturday will look like, and we'll also talk a little
bit of pre or offseason pardon me with Al just
(02:18):
in terms of the continued buildout of this football team.
So all that's coming up will also take a look
at the biggest sports stories of twenty twenty five, as
this is our final show together in the calendar year
twenty twenty five, So all that's coming up as well.
Seven oh four five, seven ninety six to ten. Smoke,
How did we get again onto the topic of overplayed
(02:39):
radio songs earlier in the show? Did that stem from
your Tom Cruise Magnolia oscar speech or what was that? Yeah?
We talk about the Hall of Fame, Yeah, and you
started talking about overplayed How do we get there? I
totally forgot. I forgot too, Yeah, but it got good
and you know, smoke Smoke reference the Kenny Chesney Uncle
Cracker song what was it called? Again? When the Sun
Goes Down? When the Sun Goes Down? As his choice
(03:00):
for the most overplayed radio song of all time? Like
the song that they played so much. It made you
despise it, and then people started sending in their own
versions of it and it got really funny on the
text line. So I will open it back up to that,
what is the most overplayed song in the history of
the radio. Because we've been having fun with this during
the break, I'll give you two that I thought of,
(03:22):
Who Let the Dogs Out? Back in two thousand. All right,
you could not get away from that song for about
a twelve month span. You couldn't turn on the radio,
you couldn't go to a shopping mall, you couldn't go
to any public event without hearing who Let the Dogs
Out for about twelve straight months. And then that song
just disappeared from our collective consciousness for like twenty years
(03:43):
it went away, but for a twelve month span, you
could not get away from it. And that song made
me want to fight people in public when it came on. Well,
and I'll also throw this out too.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
You know in Walmart how they have like the five
dollars bins, Yeah, for like CDs and movies. I remember
walking past one one day and it was like, Eh,
your curiosity killed the cattle.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Wanted to see some of the stuff all right.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Apparently they had a greatest hits of the Baja Men
who were How could.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
The Baja Men have a greatest hits album?
Speaker 3 (04:10):
That was my question? How is that even possible? How
could you find ten to twelve songs? Is it just
all the songs from that one album where they had
who Let the Dogs Out? Like I'm asking because I don't.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, like a repackaged album with a different names. I know,
I'm with you. I'll give you another one. But the
song that got played so much you despised it, You're
Ready Smooth by Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
How about that one? Well, our former producer, Julian Counsel
will hate you for that.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
I don't care. That's the one that made you want
to put your foot through your radio when Smooth came
on for the thousandth time before lunch that day. That one,
and uh, there was another. This one. This one might
not be radio necessarily, at least not for me because
I was a little bit too old for this. But
I think the bars maybe in America over played the
(05:00):
Journey song Oh I'm drawing a blank here, don't stop believing? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
like they've ruined that song as well. Journeys Don't Stop
Believing was ruined a long time ago, really long time ago.
And I also don't think it helped that it was
used as the Sopranos last scene when Oh yeah, well
you know, because they were playing I believe they were
playing that song when they were into diner. Oh yeah,
(05:23):
oh yeah, yeah, that's true. They were Oh how you
remind me? By Nickelback. That's another one you couldn't get
away from. You just couldn't you. And really it was
all Nickelback of that era. Oh somebody said, Trains by
Drops of Jupiter by train. That's a really good one.
All right, we could probably do this all bit.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
I would also throw out a hero by in recky Iglesias.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Oh wow, I can be No, you don't need to
sing it. Don't don't do that. Don't start singing that song.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
It's fastly funny when you realize who the song's about.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Okay, all right? Seven o four five seven ninety six
ten the most overplayed song that made you hate it
in the history of radio? What is it? Seven oh
four or five seven oh ninety six ten? Would love
to know what you came up with on that front. Again,
Nick Carboni coming up in nineteen minutes. Right now, we
go to smoke with the best audio in sports.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
What did you say?
Speaker 2 (06:13):
You what?
Speaker 5 (06:14):
What did you say?
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Hold up?
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Wait a minute, send me right.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
What I mean by that is all right?
Speaker 6 (06:22):
What you got?
Speaker 2 (06:23):
All right?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Well, we start off by talking about the James Nagy
situation and a lot of some of these G League
two way players that are going to play college basketball
right in the middle of the season, and a lot
of coaches finally were able to talk about it for
the first time since this happened on Christmas Eve, and
the most outspoken believe it or not, it's not a shocker.
It's John Kyle Perry as he was talking to the
(06:46):
media in Arkansas yesterday, and Wade in owned the decision
for James Nagy to actually play college basketball.
Speaker 7 (06:54):
Well, look, I don't blame coaches. You know, I've got
friends that are playing with twenty seven year olds and
they feel bad. I said, don't feel bad. We don't
have any rules. Why should you feel bad? But let
me give you this real simple. The rules bees the rules.
(07:14):
So if you put your name in the draft, I
don't care if you're from Russia and you stay in
the draft, you can't play college basketball. Well that's only
for American kids. What if your name is in that
draft and you got drafted, you can't play cup because
that's our rule. Yeah, but that's only for American kids. Okay, okay,
(07:38):
Now here's the next lawsuit. Well, we don't have a
say over European players. You do if they're playing in
college basketball. So that means you don't have a say
over high school kids. So whatever a high school kid
does before he comes here, don't you do one thing
because there's a suit, Because what you're saying is is
(08:01):
if he's in Europe, we don't have the same rules.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
What I mean, he's right about all of it. Now
when he said he told Scott Drew, don't feel bad. No,
they should all feel a little bit bad. They get it.
The rules are the rules in that there are no rules,
and right now you can get away with it. And
so I understand his point. But no, they should all
feel just a little bit bad, a little bit. Okay,
(08:27):
I get it. It's cutthroats, it's all about wins. Got
it understood completely, But they should feel a little bit bad.
But it does need to be changed. Charlie Baker. By
the way, NC Double A President Charlie Baker, earlier today
for What's Worth Well Right, issued a statement that read quote,
the NC DOUBLEA has not and will not grant eligibility
(08:49):
to any perspective or returning student athletes who have signed
an NBA contract, including a two way contract. As schools
are increasingly recruiting individuals with international league experience, it's the
NCAA is exercising discretion in applying the actual and necessary
expenses by law to ensure that perspective student athletes with
experience in American basketball leagues are not at a disadvantage
(09:12):
compared to their international counterparts. Rules have long permitted schools
to enroll and play individuals with no prior collegiate experience midyear.
While the NCAA has prevailed on the vast majority of
eligibility related lawsuits, recent outlier decisions in joining the NCAA
on a nationwide basis from enforcing rules that have been
on the books for decades without even having a trial
(09:34):
are wildly destabilizing. I will be working with D one
leaders in the weeks ahead to protect college basketball from
these misguided attempts to destroy this American Institution. End quote.
That is from Charlie Baker, NCUBA President. And they've got
to get their arms around this. They have to. And
I said yesterday and I'll say it again. As a
sports fan, this is not KB the sports talk host
(09:57):
or sports broadcaster talking. This is simply KB the sports fan,
as I always was, long before somebody gave me a microphone.
I love college sports, I always have. I understand they've
changed dramatically, but I have no interest as a fan
in watching a bunch of twenty seven and twenty eight
year old dudes play college basketball. I don't. I don't
want to watch it. I don't if I wanted to
watch a water down NBA. There are a lot of
(10:18):
other things that I could watch, a lot of other
leagues across the world that I could watch. Don't want
to see this. Don't like what it's doing to high
school athletes, none of it. Okay, if you're twenty seven
or twenty eight years old, we all have dreams and ambitions.
Maybe it didn't get that scholarship out of high school.
That stinks, but damn it. Go play overseas or go
get a job like the rest of us. Okay, go
(10:39):
get a damn job. Like the rest of us, I
don't want to watch twenty eight, twenty nine thirty year
old dudes playing college basketball. I just don't. You can disagree.
That's my take as a sports fan. I think it
ruins everything that we've come to love about college athletics
over the years. Have there been outliers? Have there been
instances of this in the past, Sure there have, but
they were outliers. They were you know, small numbers, and
now we're watching those numbers creep up and up and
(10:59):
up up. These programs now going after like guys like
James Nausey, who's been playing professionally for five years, who
was drafted already by the Pistons, dealt to the Hornets,
dealt to the Knicks. No, he's never played in the NBA.
But it's just it's wrong. To me, it's absolutely wrong
and it shouldn't be happening. And speaking of get a job.
One of my favorite recent social media posts, I think
(11:24):
ESPN was the original place that I saw this. They
had a great post where they went on LinkedIn to
find out what all these former star athletes are up to.
It's great. There's lots of things for former athletes to do. Okay,
what was you reach a certain age? Toby Gerhardt is
the senior director of Sales and Enablement at A Shuryon.
(11:46):
Mike Glennon is a commercial real estate broker these days.
Josh Rosen is an NBA NBA candidate at the Wharton School.
Justin Tuck, Super Bowl Champion managing director at Goldman Sachs
these days. Jake Plummer, Vice president and peace and love mushrooms. Okay,
there are lots of options for former athletes to go
out there and just get a damn job. That's all
(12:07):
I got.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
All right, Well, we do still need to be on
d James Naji situation because we need to hear from
Scott Drew. Why did you make this decision? And yesterday
Scott Drew finally answered that question.
Speaker 8 (12:18):
Well, first, coaches, oh and I are friends. I got
a lot of respect for him, a great conversation. As
he said, most coaches are ninety nine percent aligned on
things that we would like to see done with our game.
At the same time, from my knowledge, until we get
to collective bargaining, I don't think we can come up
(12:38):
with rules that are real, born forcible until that, I
think all of us are got to be ready to
adjust and adapt to what's out there. Early on, when
it first came out with G League players, I wasn't
in favor of that either, but again, we don't make
the rules, and as we find out about things, we're
(12:59):
always going to adapt to put our program in the
best position to be successful, because that's what we get
paid to do.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Everybody keeps talking about how important collective bargaining is moving
forward to get all this right, and I do think
that's where it's headed. But what's ultimately standing between that
and where we are now? I've thought a lot about that.
Is it like recognition from the National Labor Relations Board?
Is it? You know, do these guys have to be
(13:28):
w two employees? Like? What is standing between collective bargaining
between where we are now and getting to the stage
of collective bargaining happening? If everybody agrees that's the way
this has to be fixed, I think representation on both sides. Well,
I know, but that's what collective bargaining is. I'm saying,
what is the next step to get them there? No
one really ever seen, and I'm sure that the lawyers
(13:49):
have some idea, but I'm not one of them, Like
I'm genuinely asking what needs to happen next so that
you can have a CBA or that collective bargaining can
take place in football and basketball to get us past
all the silliness that's occurred the last three to five years.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
The problem is at that point, the title nine is
still going to be a factor, So you've got to
do all the other sports too.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
And question is how do you divvy out the money
for the other sports? Yeah, in that situation, sure, I
think that's what a lot of it has to real
Quick seven o four number said, what's the difference between
those twenty six year olds and the guys that are
on their eighth year of extended COVID eligibility. Well, the
difference is the COVID thing is, you know what was finite.
It was going to go away at some point, right.
That was an extenuating circumstance, and we all kind of
(14:31):
felt it was ridiculous. The dudes were playing their seventh
and eight years of college football and even college basketball,
but they were supposed to be an end point to it.
So when you ask what the difference is, you know,
that's it. And I'm also last night and I'm watching,
like the difference between Jannis and Tetakoupo and t Jhan
Salon Ti. John's twenty years old. He could be in
another world a college freshman right now at twenty years old.
(14:53):
I mean, I guess Theiannis could technically now too, But
you know, that was the difference between a grown man
body at a twenty year old who still growing into
his body. Like, do you want to see that kind
of discrepancy in college basketball all the time? I don't
what else you got?
Speaker 3 (15:07):
All right, this came out last week, but I wanted
you to hear it. As Austin Rivers called the peacock
game between the Calves and Hornets to Hornets lost the game,
but it was a valiant effort so they didn't embarrass
themselves in front of a national stage. And Austin Rivers
was honestly the first over the last week to really
point out that, hey, things are kind of changing in
the right direction for the Hornets and possibly for the
(15:30):
long term.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
You know, on paper, I'm like, oh my gosh, Charlotte,
And then you meet the coach and you meet new management,
and you see how optimistic they are and how positive
they are, and then like they're shoot arounds and all
this stuff. You're like, yeah, they're really like turning stuff around.
It's actually like it was eye opening for me being
around them, especially for an office the coach, like they
got a certain way about them where you start to
(15:52):
see why they're GM's thirty something years old and in
that position you got, you start to see why their
coach is thirty something years old and in that position
like these guys got. Because yesterday I'm talking to Charlotte's
front office and.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
He's like, you know, it's been tough.
Speaker 5 (16:07):
We came in and we were behind, you know, and
we had draft picks, but they haven't come to fruition yet,
so we needed something to go right for us. We
knew LaMelo's gonna be good. So LaMelo worked out all right,
but that wasn't our drafts, you know, we weren't here
for that. He's liked, so we were like, we got
a draft. Well, Brandon Mill's worked out. In our opinion,
he's very good, he's talented. We like him, but you
(16:29):
got to get lucky. Can Nipple's our guy, you know
what I mean, Like we got lucky with him. Do
we think Nipple could play. Absolutely. We like how strong
his lower base was. I mean, this is how they
were talking about it, like we like how strongest bases.
We liked how thick and strong.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
He is, how he could shoot. Do we think he
was going to.
Speaker 5 (16:45):
Be a twenty point per game players rookie year and
break Steph Curry's three point record? No, we but you
got to get lucky. Yeah, you know what I mean.
He's like, we've had a lot of bad luck. I mean,
this is the guy looking at me like we've had
a lot of that luck here. It's about time it's
coming back our way.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
I love that breakdown, and there's a lot I could
say about it. But did you see Charles Lee and
Janis embracing after the game last night and having a
little conversation, very very intimate conversation after the game last night.
Oh don't start this, Kyle. I just I just wondered, like, hey, buddy,
you like what you see around here? We played you
(17:20):
tough and we didn't even have Cohn tonight. We're building
something here. You think you could, uh you could work
with these cast of characters here? What do you mean?
Don't get what do you mean?
Speaker 3 (17:29):
Don't start, You're starting to get this idea that he
could be traded here.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
Well, isn't it possible? You mean to tell me that
if Charlotte called up to Milwaukee, it was like, we'll
give you the first rounders you want, We'll throw in
a bushel of second rounders, because that's that's, you know,
big time currency in the NBA these days, they have
they have a boatload of them. And even if they
wanted a young player, like if you had to give
up T John, would you do it for that trade
(17:55):
to get Yannis here? Johannis? And then the third team
would probably get involved in the process. You give him
the first they want, you give them T John, you
give them the second. And I don't want to give
up T Joon to be clear, I don't, but you
would you give up the first, the bushel of seconds
and a good young player.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
The problem is, I just don't think this team is
in a spot yet to give up first round picks.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Yeah, I get it, I do. I'm just and Jeff
Peterson says, we don't want to skip steps. And I've
said previously that he's in north to thirty and I
don't know, but he doesn't look like he's slowing down,
So I'm just curious. We were having this conversation earlier
in the office, but last night, you know, Charles Lee's
little pow wow with with Giannis got a lot of
people thinking what else you got?
Speaker 3 (18:36):
All right, we end with Monday Night Football, as I
have never heard Troy mandiskidti and is nearly twenty five
years of broadcasting football games. But in case you didn't know,
the Rams have a linebacker named Nate Laman. Of course
he calls him a little bit differently, Nate Lanman, and
it sent him on a tangent about the greatness that
is of linebacker Nate Lamman of the La Rams.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
Now Here in the bail he.
Speaker 9 (18:58):
Gets hit over the right set and on second and
ten gets to that sid So you're going land Man,
You're going land Man. I know you're friends with Taylor Sheridan,
so you're you're just skipping the Landman thing.
Speaker 6 (19:10):
Well, and he likes being called Landman. Great joke, great linebacker,
great name. I mean, you just said all ties together.
The interesting thing, guess what his sister's name is.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
I'm not even gonna.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
Try Ocean land Man. And she was a swimmer at
Oregon State. So there you go. Good, that's outstanding.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Well, I mean, I got some things to say about
Landman season two, but I don't guess anybody cares about
that right now. The real quick, the real thing is
Ocean Landman. I heard she's a really damn good swimmer.
Well you're talking about what what Aikman said? Yeah, Ocean Landman,
I've heard she's a great, damn good swimmer. Yeah, he
just said that she swam at Oregon State. Am I
missing the joke? Yes? What is it? What is it?
(19:55):
I said, she's a damn good ohing, damn goods dang man,
that's good man, And that went right over my head
for a second. That's what did you say? The best
audio in the world of sports. When we return Nick Carboni,
NBC Charlotte Sports Director, Sports anchor, fresh out of the
Panthers locker room, we'll find out what Panthers players had
to say about the upcoming matchup against Tampa and they're
odds to make the playoffs. Nick Carboni Next Sports Radio
(20:18):
ninety two to seven, WFNZ Sports Radio ninety two to
seven wfn ZKB and smoke with you here on the
(20:39):
final show of calendar year twenty twenty five, having a
good time al Wallace coming up in thirty three minutes.
I do want to take a look at both the
college football playoff quarterfinals starting tomorrow Ohio State Miami. We
got Alabama and Indiana. We got Georgia and Ole Miss.
We got Oregon in Texas Tech. I think these games
are going to be just phenomenal. Maybe that's you know, hoping,
(21:02):
but also I think these games can be phenomenal. So
we'll get to that and we'll take take a look
at the biggest sports stories of calendar year twenty twenty five.
I did get a funny text from Dale a little
while ago. He said, KB, just jumping on. I heard
you say earlier that you are flying into a flu
den to pick up your family tomorrow. Buddy, you better
double mask and stay at a hotel if you need to.
(21:22):
You better not miscountdown to kick off on Saturday. That
is my great fear. And I told the bosses about
this earlier today. I told Hoggard. I was like, listen,
I'm flying back up tomorrow to the upper reaches of
New England to go get the family to drive them
back home. We're doing it. Today early so I can
get back in time for Panthers pre game on Saturday.
But my entire family is down with the flu right now,
(21:45):
and I'm flying up and into a flu den. My
father in law's house is full of nothing but people
who are dealing with the flu, and I don't know
how I'm going to make it out unscathed. Smoke. I
did text my wife earlier and tell her that I
might get a hotel room next door. She got really,
really mad. I was gonna ask to am I a jerk?
If I tell my wife, Hey, I'm coming to get you,
(22:06):
but I'm staying in a hotel tomorrow night because I
need to do a countdown to kick off on Saturday?
Am I a bad dad and a bad husband? If
I tell them, Hey, Daddy's coming to get you, but
I'm staying in the hotel next door tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (22:17):
I mean, I don't think it'll be as bad as.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Wearing a hazmat suit as you go to pick him off.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
That would be That would be probably consulting's like, all right, kids,
let's go.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
Yeah. I mean, I am I embracing for having to
call out from the the pregame show on Saturday I
don't have a choice. I gotta go get him. But yeah,
I might be down. We'll have to wait and see.
I got the black Lonton pop but no, seriously, like
she got mad. But I was like, i'mighta to stay
in the hotel and she didn't like that answer. All right,
Let's go to Nick Carbony, NBC Charlotte Sports Director, sports anchor.
He's back with us, fresh out of a Panther's locker
(22:46):
room session. He's back a little later than usual here
on a Tuesday. Happy to year, brother, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (22:52):
I'm good man, Tuesday is Wednesday. Wednesday is Thursday, Thursday,
it is Friday. It's a short week. But man, and
what a happy holiday for Panthers fans or something to
play for in week eight?
Speaker 2 (23:03):
Team? Yeah, it's awesome, man, it really is. Let's just
real quick. Let me get your thoughts out of the way.
On Sunday, you and I were in the press box
together and they listen, they lost to a good team.
They lost to the best team in the NFC at
a Super Bowl contender. But I think it's how they
lost in the fact that you know, Miami did their share.
You know that really left fans pretty disappointed on Sunday's result.
(23:23):
What'd you think, Yeah, losing.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
To Seattle on face value is, you know, not that surprising.
It's nothing to hang your head about or think you
can't go and do what the Panthers have done since
October nineteenth and go out there and win the very
next week. But yes, it sings doubly so. I think
for the two reasons you mentioned, the Bucks losing to
(23:48):
Miami and that golden opportunity being right there for you
around four o'clock on Sunday afternoon when both games wrapped up,
and then you know the turnovers and the lack of
passing game and offense over all. But you know, part
of that you hand a Seattle. Part of that you
scratch your head like we do every other week and say,
you know, what's going on with the play calling, the quarterback,
(24:09):
the receivers in the old line. I thought it was
kind of a confluence of all of those. But you know,
they're right back in it. We see, this is how
it goes over in this locker room every other week.
They're focused on this week and confident that they can do,
you know, just like they've done the last two months.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
What the overall offensive performance fifty four yards passing, not
nearly enough rushing production. I mean, the defense came to
play nick, but the offense just laid an egg for
a multitude of reasons. Where do you start in assessing
the blame on the offensive side, because somebody's got to
take it.
Speaker 4 (24:43):
Yeah, I think it's that's tough. I think it is
the lack of separation from the receivers in that particular
game against man coverage, which they didn't expect. So that
goes into coaching. I mean, Bryce Young having fifty four
passing yards in a professional football game.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Is a jarring stat And I don't.
Speaker 4 (25:02):
Want this to sound the wrong way, but like I
didn't think much of it until I realized you had
like sixteen with eight minutes to go in the third quarter,
because I wasn't looking at the offense and going, this
is all on nine. I just don't think it was that.
I mean, certainly's got a part of it, but you know,
we've seen again every other week where you know it
just doesn't sync up coaching, play calling, quarterbacking, blocking, receiving.
(25:27):
But you know, to me, it was tamas illness the
man coverage and not being able to adjust lea guests,
many many miscues, you know, Cocher being a nice player,
but still thinking they probably need to add a big
weapon or you know, a one A to t Mac
this offseason.
Speaker 7 (25:46):
J C.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
Sanders going down like all of it, another offensive line
combination and a good Seattle defense.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
What the As far as the health situation goes, we'll
get the official injury report, but I got people who
have wanted me to ask you what you learned today
about the injury situation. Robert Hunt has come up a
number of times as well. What do you know about Hunt?
I'm curious what we found out about David Moore as well,
and just the general availability of some of these guys
for Week eighteen.
Speaker 4 (26:10):
Yeah, Hunt and more full participants today. But again it's
a walk through, so you take that with a bit
of a grain of salt. But we did talk to
Robert Hunt and he told us he's still in a
heck of a lot better than he even did the
time he talked to us last week when they opened
up that twenty one day window, and of course he
missed last week's game, but according to him, according to
Dave Canas, is still a little bit too early in
(26:30):
the week to tell if he's going to be able
to go out there and do what he physically needs
to do in an NFL game against the Bucks defensive line.
But I will say, like, if he has a good
day tomorrow, that would give you a lean on, like
he may be able to play Saturday. They've also got
to keep in mind they they might need him the
week after, but not if they don't take care of business,
(26:51):
and not if Atlanta doesn't take care of business this weekend,
of course, but just it's I think we'll get a
lean one way or the other tomorrow on Hunt.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
As far as I'm concerned, if David Moore can go Saturday, Nick,
I know he hasn't played in a while. I'm giving
him excel snaps personally, Yeah, that's the way open.
Speaker 4 (27:09):
Somebody they can get open and know where they are
on the field and have that professionalism and reliability and awareness.
And he brought that to this team for the bulk
of last season and brought Bryce Young a reliable target
that he could go to in key situations. So yes, absolutely,
you're you're one hundred percent right. You know Dave Canalis
when kind of you know, he always kind of is
(27:30):
asked about lea get you know, whether he's going to
bench m or not, and he kind of tows the
line there a little bit. But speaking of towing the line,
like he did reveal to us all that Leaguett didn't
even see the official signal that he was offside. So
I think there is definitely some frustration there under the surface,
and they can't afford to mess around anymore. They can't
afford to say, hey, hey, it's okay. You know you're young,
(27:51):
and you know you didn't know better, because he does
by now, and they need better than that out there
on the field. So I think you're absolutely right. Didn't
have a whole lot of conference about more or with
More today, but can tell you he was listed as
a full participant, so much like Robert Hunt, kind of
on the same timeline. Tomorrow is gonna be really interesting
with those guys.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Now, I think you alluded to this, but even if
you didn't, it's fine. The fact that Seattle ended up
running a ton of man coverage on Sunday, despite the
fact they came in leading the league in zone usage.
Dave Canalis admitted it. Bryce Young said it like it
really caught them off guard, and they're catching a lot
of criticism on my text line for their inability to adjust.
(28:30):
If I couple that with maybe, you know, being bottom
four in the NFL and points per game this year, Like,
does that concern you about the future of the offense
at all? How do you ingest that?
Speaker 4 (28:40):
Yeah? I mean, I think they've had more good days
on offense than at quarterback and play calling this year.
Speaker 10 (28:45):
Than they did last year.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
But much like with the team overall, it is still
very much a work in progress. Dave Canallis is in
his third year as full time play caller in the NFL,
just as second balancing head coaching and play calling, and
asked this, but I don't think he's going to give
that up at the least at the beginning of year three,
not without some outside help coming in different than what
(29:08):
they have here now. So yeah, I mean, and they're
still adding they still need more weapons around Bryce Young.
I mean, t Maak was a fantastic pick. He's going
to be here for a long time and make a
lot of Pro Bowl The running backs are solid, but
outside of that, they don't have a lot of reliability
for Bryce Young to get the ball to and I
think that's a big part of all this. You know,
you look, you look at this season without Adam Feeling
(29:31):
David Moore, as you said, but it's just all first
and second year guys out there.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
It's frustrating. Nick Carboni NBC Charlotte hanging out with us here.
Any thoughts on j C.
Speaker 3 (29:40):
Horn.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Obviously third and twenty one was a disaster on Sunday,
He's overall had a good year. I mean, he's a
pro bowler for the second straight year. But between Sunday
and a couple of miscues against the Saints, I mean
it's been I think net Net it's been good, Nick,
but there have been some catastrophically bad snaps and Sunday's overall, yeah,
I mean not how I.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
Think you know any minute right after the game didn't
He didn't need to have his hand up that high
on that play. You just need to shove him out
of bound. So kind of the I don't want to
say lack of maturity because I think he's a leader
on the team. He's a mature individual.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Off the field.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
They're not saying that, but just you've got to know
that situation got to come up with the pick in
the first half. Got to stand your feet against the
Saints in that first game, you know. So overall, I
think he's got a very solid year and he's probably
going to make another Pro Bowl or two or three
the rest of his career. But like the rest of
this team, they kind of need to be able to
(30:33):
execute when everything's on the line, when that playoff spot
is there for the taking, when the ball is there
for the taking, when the downs are there.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
For the taking.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
The team overall, that's the next step I think for everybody.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
How big is Sunday for Bryce Young just in terms
of how they view him going into the off season.
I hate reducing things to one game, Nick, but I mean,
here we are going toward the end of his third year.
It's been wildly inconsistent, has been better than like overall
the last five games, you know, in terms of being consistent.
But after Sunday, like, how do you how much do
you think they're putting on this game in terms of
(31:09):
judging him moving forward.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
That's a great question because of what's on the line,
and because of the defense that and the secondary that
is to be had in this game. Obviously, it's all in.
It's an accumulation. It's data points throughout two or three
seasons for Bryce Young let's call it two after the
first year disaster for everybody around here. But you know
(31:31):
he's he's still had if you stack it up, more
bad days than good days, you know, and maybe an
even split this year at best. So I think yes,
maybe Dan Morgan and the company weighed a little bit
more to see, Okay, what can you do when the
lights shine the brightest, which they won't really shine until
like the fourth quarter, obviously with a four thirty kick,
(31:52):
But the stage is said, and you know, this is
where this is why you draft the guy number one
overall and and this is what he did at all.
Now can he do it in the pros when the
playoffs are on the line?
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Dot dot that kind of dot kind of All right,
talk Hornets before we let you go here. I was
in the building last night for the game against the Bucks.
They played well. They fought hard, the Hornets, that is,
But then Giannis and Bobby Porter and Bobby Portis rather
and Miles Turner took over in the fourth quarter. They
lost Miles Bridges at halftime. They never had con Ka
Nipple or Ryan Kalchbrenner last night. But overall, there are
(32:26):
a lot of positive things from this team right now,
and it seems like they are maybe turning a corner
a little bit. What do you think of their their
last week and a half.
Speaker 4 (32:35):
Yeah, I think as they gain health and you know, granted,
you just talked about a couple of angle injuries and
they are in an elbow injury, but as they gained
better health than they had the first portion of the season,
you start to see a little bit of traction. It's
not coming all at once. It's not an eight game
win streak, but it's been a better stretch. I do
believe Conk Nipple will come back as soon as humanly possible.
(32:55):
I think he wanted to play last night, but it
just wasn't in the cards. And there being a little
bit careful, but he's not going to let them be
super cautious. I don't think. I haven't seen I think
it comes out in like an hour the injury report
for tomorrow or maybe sooner as the one o'clock game.
Haven't seen it either way, so correct me if I'm wrong.
But I think he'll try to play tomorrow. You know,
write a passage for Charlotte Hornet, right, so to hould
(33:17):
your ankle up in a basketball game. But yes, I
think as we see the healthy versions of Tinnippul LaMelo
and Miles with Bridges when he can be healthy and efficient,
I think it's a better team than they've showed so
far and what their record has showed.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
All Right, buddy, we appreciate you as always and you're
not going anywhere. But it's the end of the year,
so I want to say thank you for everything you
do for us. We always enjoy your Tuesday appearances and
we will do it again next Tuesday in twenty twenty six.
Same here.
Speaker 4 (33:44):
Look forward to it every year every week.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
Buddy, thank you having you. You're Nick Carboni, NBC Charlotte
sports director, sports anchor with us on the Hotline. Dude
named Hot Wheels just texted me to say he'd rather
have Max Brosmer than Bryce Young. I'm not taking your
bait today, sir. I am not going to let that
get to me. Why would you say something like that, though,
Why would you say you'd rather have Max Brosmer than
Bryce Show?
Speaker 3 (34:05):
Why would you say that? I guess that's a major
Gopher fan, right there.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
You don't mean that. There's no way you could possibly
mean that. I get it. You're trolling. Its rage bait.
You want me to scream and overreact and rant and rave,
and I'm not gonna do it. I just I I
want to ask you again, why would just why would
you say that? You don't mean that. Let's go to
smoke on the headlines, all right.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
Don't have the Hornets injury report, as Nick said, that'll
probably come out within the next hour. But do have
an update on the Carolina Panthers. According to Dave Canals
in his press conference. We mentioned earlier that Rico Daddle
was not participating in the walk through today, and according
to Canalis, Rico Daddle has a sore toe. He's day
to day, but it's hopeful that this rest day will
(34:51):
help him. All right, And you're a toe expert, so
I figured you would. All right, Okay, what else you got?
Speaker 2 (34:56):
All right? Well, I mentioned this earlier to you.
Speaker 3 (34:59):
But the Chie Bowl, which has taking place over the
next couple of days, they are going all out with
their concessions. And I love how these Bowl games more
so are going all out over the last couple of years.
I mean, the Duke's Mayo Bowl is a prime example.
The Pop Tart Bowl, well, the cheese at Bowl Citrus
Bowl is living up to the hype as well. Here
are some of the concessions that you could get in
the game. Loaded chili, cheese at crunch Dog.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Oh, that sounds great, mac and cheese it walking nachos
What is that? And do you have like a description
on there?
Speaker 3 (35:30):
It's basically a lot of stuff, a lot of stuff
you get in nachos and just add a couple of cheese.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
It's so like a layer of cheddar jack cheese. Its yeah,
with like chili and cheese and jalapenos and not as
much chili based off the photo really but yes, but yes,
I guess not chili. I guess more like ground beef
or something. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
Also cheese at bacon cheese burger with the cheese it's
in between the buns and a cheese at turkey leg.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
A cheese it what turkey lick? Oh, turkey leg. I'm
sorry that last one doesn't sound very good. It's just
a turkey leg with a lot of the cheeses. The
first three things you mentioned sound fantastic. All right, we'll
come back, We'll tell you who balled out? We got
Al Wallace in eighteen minutes. We still got to talk
about the college football playoff quarterfinals and the biggest sports
stories of twenty twenty five. Stick Around Sports Radio ninety

Speaker 3 (37:13):
I'm going with the biggest folk hero in Minnesota sports history,
nas Reed Kyle. He came off the bench last night
and only twenty seven minutes scored thirty three points eleven
of eighteen from the field, six of ten from behind
the arc that included seven rebounds in three assists as
the Timberwolves cruise to a victory over Dobbles one thirty
six to one oh one.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
How about that, I'm going with Chip Kelly, who has
another new job, this time at Northwestern. Chip Kelly, two
time college head coach with Oregon and UCLA, two time
NFL head coach with Philadelphia and San Francisco, is now
headed up to Chicago to become their new offensive coordinator,
joining David Brawn's staff. Well, I'll tell you what. A
(37:54):
couple of years ago when he left UCLA for to
go be the play caller at Ohio State, and you know,
people said, well, you know, maybe that guy doesn't want
to recruit, he just wants to call plays. He just
wants to coach ball. It appears that's exactly what Chip
Kelly wants to do. I guess he's just going to
keep hopping around and calling plays at various programs and
teams until he decides to hang it up. And I
think that's cool. Like he's he's had his time as
(38:16):
a head coach. I don't think he likes recruiting very much.
I think his days in the NFL as a head
coach or behind him obviously, so I think there were
some rumors about possibly him landing in Chapel Hill not
that long ago, before they landed Bobby Petrino. But I mean,
chip Kelly, Northwestern, you can do a hell of a
lot worse than chip Kelly calling your plays. Big get
for David Brown.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
The real question is how will he do if those
recruits compared to the Ohio State recruits he had, Yeah,
that loaded wide receiver room.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
So that's going to be interesting.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
And it's specially interesting considering north Western's never really played
his style. Northwestern even in the past at s Gerald
days in the bron era, which has been actually pretty good.
You know, they've made a couple of Bowl games, which
for them is big. They've been a very slow, grinded
out Marmie type of offense. Now you're getting chip Kelly
(39:03):
in the shotgun formation and a lot of stuff.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
So Northwestern has become very interesting.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
Hey, just in time for them to finally move back
into Ryan Field because they're not going to be playing
at their soccer stadium next year.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
Cool. All right, there you go, seven four, five, seven
ninety six ten. Hit us up on the FanDuel text line.
Al Wallace coming up in ten minutes. Right now, we
go to the phone lines US Marine Corps. Dave is
back here on a Tuesday. Dave, what's going on? Buddy?
Happy New Year.
Speaker 10 (39:29):
Happy New Year, man, Happy new Year. So let me
get to the positive before I hit the butt, right,
So the positive.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
If you told me pre.
Speaker 10 (39:38):
Season we would be going into the final week of
the season with a chance to win the division, make
the playoffs, man, I would have took that. I would
have took that and been happy with that.
Speaker 4 (39:49):
But and there is a butt.
Speaker 10 (39:51):
Dave Canalis play cole. Let's start with Jimmy Horn Junior
and I'm gonna roll o'clock back. I think it was
I think it was UH person's on his on his
uh writing years ago, and he was talking about Ted
gin Jr. We got rid of Ted gin Jr. What's
wrong with her offense? We can't run the football? Well,
(40:14):
we got rid of the deep threat. And that's what
he said. We're teams are stacking the box because we
got rid of the deep threat. Why are the new
we not running Ted getting or not Ted Jr? Jimmy
Horn Jr. Down the sidelines to make a deep threat.
And so that's my question. And my other comment is, dude,
(40:35):
I got a dog that will fight you over a
tennis ball more than Nextdale fights for a freaking touchdown.
And that's frustrated.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
Man, What are your fault? All right? No, look, I
appreciate you. The Horn thing we brought up yesterday before
I let you go. The Horn thing we brought up yesterday.
They've pretty much exclusively used him as a gadget guy.
He had the big catch against Miami and the comeback
on fourth down a big catch against Dallas. Neither of
those were deep balls. Though, I'm with you, I don't
(41:06):
know if they've seen like what they've seen to not
trust him, but I'm surprised that we haven't seen them
attempted at least a couple of times.
Speaker 10 (41:14):
But Kyle, if you go back to and I do
think it was Joe Persons that wrote the article that
I might be wrong. If you go back to that,
and he pointed out, maybe he gets overthrown, maybe it's
in his hand and he drops it, but you have
to respect the fact that he can take.
Speaker 4 (41:31):
It to the house.
Speaker 10 (41:33):
Every time you have to put somebody on it. We're
not even doing that.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
Yeah, listen, I appreciate the phone call, Dave. I'm with
you on that. We talked about it yesterday. It's not
that I think that Jimmy Horn Junior is suddenly going
to turn into one of the great deep threats in
the NFL overnight. But you took him because of the speed. Okay,
you couldn't have taken him because you thought you were,
like the jet sweep was just going to be that
insanely successful.
Speaker 3 (41:59):
And you haven't had him as a healthy scratch all
year too, Right, I'm mistaken, right, I mean.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
I guess since what he got his first crack at
things in week three? Actually, yeah, so he was actually
he didn't get a helmet the first two weeks, right, yeah,
because that was when David Moore was ahead of him
as well as Hunter Infro right, and then around the time.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
So actually they did hit the deep that one against Dallas.
It was about a twenty yard.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
Pass, okay, yeah, but like not the like the you know,
it's not a fifth to go route to go. Yeah. Yeah,
when people are thinking deep ball, they're thinking the go route,
the fly route, the nine route, like just get down
the field and Bryce put it out there for him, right,
we haven't seen that, And again, like I I'm surprised
that at least on a couple of occasions they haven't
you know, run a formation out there to get him
(42:41):
in man coverage to, you know, to get him alone
on one side and at least take a shot at it.
But I don't know. Do they not trust him to
win fifty to fifty balls? I mean, he's not a
big guy. I don't know what the reasoning of the
rationale is there, but I would love to know. I
don't know if Dave's been asked that recently, but i'd
love to know why.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
I don't think he I don't think he's really asked
about Jimmy Horn since the Dallas game, if we're being honest, Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
I'm with you on that. Seven oh four five, seven
oh ninety six ten. Hit us up on the fan
duel text line we come back. Al Wallace, just hit
me up. He is locked and loaded, good to go.
I'll bring this up to him. I'll see what he
thinks about it. Next. Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn
