Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet. Today our number two
(00:26):
sports radio ninety two to seven WF and Z Big
thanks to Cameron Wolf NFL Network for stopping by. Always
fun talking to him. I got a chance to hang
out with he and Smitty yesterday at joint practice to
catch up. That's, of course how we ended up on
the show again today and I heard Mack and Bone
this morning. They were giving me a hard time because
I broke the media rule and I walked out into
(00:46):
the end zone to hang out with Smitty yesterday for
a couple of minutes, and nobody.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yelled at me. I don't know what I mean. I
don't know what the big deal is. Nobody yelled at me.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
You would air what at the minute of the most I.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
Think a couple of minutes, but still yeah, like you
were way far away from the action. Plus you know,
you basically said, oh, I'm gotta get passed back to
the line, see you guys later.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
I didn't want to be that guy who was flouting
the rules when nobody else could break, But I mean,
you know, I was with Smitty, were they going to do?
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Throw me out?
Speaker 6 (01:10):
Right?
Speaker 4 (01:10):
And then I think they got jealous because they tried
to reach out to Brinson Buckner, and Buckner completely ecled him.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
So although buck was great on their show a couple
of mornings ago, I thought it was awesome.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
I still forget he's not coaching anymore, but he looked
like he looks amazing. Yeah, this point twenty years, it's
hard to believe it's been twenty years since he last
played football.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Oh wow, So that dad, just speaking of that. Shout
out to our guy. Kevin Donnelly was out there practice.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Yesterday right behind me, right as I got my credential,
and almost made me fall down, because you know, it's
not that often you see guy like he's not played
football and over twenty years, but he's still as tall
as he was when he was playing for the Carolina
Panthers and even when he was protecting Dan Marino into
Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
No, shout out to Kevin Donnalley great singing him yesterday.
I guess Bill Belichick gave him the day off out
there at Carolina Football, so he made the trek back
to Charlotte from Chapel Hill to come watch the Panther
practice yesterday. I had a lot of guys out there
to watch this. Kirk Coleman, Yeah, Kirk was there, saw
him too and speaking to folks out there yesterday. Carla
Metz is going to join us in about eighteen minutes. She,
(02:11):
of course with the c W studio host still doing
some pits, I believe in certain instances some places, but
mostly studio hosts the CW Xfinity series all things racing,
but also out there yesterday. Is she still helping out
with the Panthers on the preseason side. I believe she's
going to come up with us in eighteen minutes to
talk about her observations from practice yesterday and a whole
lot of racing as well. Coming off of Iowa this
(02:34):
past Sunday, Iowa, Owa. They're going to be in the
country this weekend too. Ah what they're going to be
in the country of Watkins Glenn. The Country of Watkins,
the country area of Watkinson, Oh Okay. By the way,
interesting fact about Watkins Glenn that was supposed to be
the original spot for Woodstock.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Woodstock was originally supposed to rely Watkins Glenn. Yes, at
the track.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Oh, they were supposed to do woodstock at the racetrack.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Was it a racetrack back then?
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Oh used to Well do you add the Watkins Glenn like, Uh,
I think it was like a hill race or something
you race for out the town and part of it
was in Watkins Glenn. But it was too dangerous, you know,
trying to get all those cars to go through downtown
Watkins Glenn.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
It's it's I've heard.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Opened in nineteen fifty six. Okay, it's one.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Of the I'd say it's one of I've heard it's
one of the best infield atmospheres in NASCAR, Like, I've
heard a lot of good stuff about it, like that
and Poconoo. I heard already two most underrated, uh infield
party scenes in.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
All of Nascar.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Okay, real quick, A few people have asked about Panthers injuries.
I want to touch on that really quickly before we
get to the best audio in sports. I'm I don't
have much. I'm gonna double check the latest. We're always
checking the old Twitter sphere and uh the wire for
news while we're on the air. Claude and Cheralists was
carted off the field yesterday. I haven't seen an update there. Smoke,
(03:56):
maybe you have, but Claude and cherists back up the
line back, you know, rode the card off the field yesterday.
I've not seen anything in the way of updates on
him today.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
No, the way that Dave Canalis made it sound like
yesterday though, it's probably he's not going to play, definitely not,
we think so, Yeah, I don't, And it sounds like
it's still up in the air for next week in
Houston as well.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
What about Damian Lewis. Damian Lewis was also toward the
end of practice. He got banged up yesterday, But I
don't know if we have any if we have any
real updates on that yet either. I'd imagine anybody who
was nicked up at all yesterday it participates in the
preseason game, especially.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
If you're Damian Lewis. Yeah, you're your starter.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah you don't.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Yeah, although when Bryce is out there, you'd like to
have your starting offensive line.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
You would.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
But this is a good thing about getting your whole
offensive lineback. You're not really going to be scared out
of your mind with Brady Christensen out there. I was
the only problem is you're kind of nicked up on
the death because I believe Chandlers have all. I got
hurt late last week early this week, so he's kind
of been nicked up over the last couple of days.
So that's not good to your death during this time
of the year. But as long as you still I
(05:08):
have Brady out there just playing left guard, I think
he can get by with it for a driver too.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah, I think they'll be okay, Yeah, I do, all right,
So we'll keep our eyes peeled for any updates on
that throughout the course of the show. Carla Matt's in
about fifteen minutes. Right now, we go to smoke with
the best audio in sports. What did you say?
Speaker 2 (05:23):
You what?
Speaker 6 (05:24):
What did you say?
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Hold up? Wait a minute?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Send me right. What I mean by that.
Speaker 5 (05:30):
Is all right?
Speaker 2 (05:31):
What you got over there?
Speaker 3 (05:32):
All right?
Speaker 4 (05:33):
Well, the focus is going to start with tomorrow's preseason
game between the Browns and the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
We'll start with the brown since they're to visitors.
Speaker 5 (05:40):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
The big story with them, obviously is Shadur Sanders is
starting the game, is likely going to play most of
the game tomorrow night and yesterday. Miles Garrett was asked
about his expectations for Schaudure tomorrow night.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
I mean, he's he's funny, he's optimistic, light hearted, but
he works hard, he takes it, he takes it seriously,
his craft, and he's watching what the others are doing
and not doing it his own way in which only
he can. So looking forward to see him these preseason games,
and you know how he u no manages the offense.
But I think he he looks good, but all the
(06:16):
guys look good right now.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Yeah, I don't know like what I can take from that,
because he's gonna say nice things. I do wonder about
the level of belief inside the locker room that Chador
can be a starting quarterback. I'm not saying it's not existent.
I'm just wondering, what the if you gave those guys,
those starters, a shot of truth serum, like what they
think about him so far, how much of that locker room,
(06:41):
you know, would rather see Joe Flacca. And Joe's gonna
get the Week one start, like he doesn't need the reps.
He's not going to play in the preseason, but like
you know, those guys want to win. I'm sure they
would like to roll with Joe Flacco, but I would
love to get some truth serum and all of them
just to get their real thoughts on Shador Sanders. I
didn't see much yesterday that really stood out good or bad.
I got no interceptions that I'm aware of. There was
(07:03):
a couple of checkdowns that we saw. I don't think
he can didn't Zach Jackson tell us yesterday that he
didn't complete a pass over eight yards yesterday.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
I think that's what he said.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
Yeah, and I may makes you fake yesterday I saw
he was when he was out there at quarterback.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I nudged you.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
I was like sure, and he's like you looked immediately
and unfortunately it was an air mail on the tight end. Yeah,
we immediately both had the cringely Yeah, just one pass.
But you know, tomorrow night, how does he how does
he look? I don't know, what do you what do
you expect? I think he'll maybe get a little roughed
up in the first series, but by the time the
two's come in, he'll start to catch his breath a
(07:39):
little bit. I don't think he's gonna look amazing, but
I don't think he's gonna stink up the place too.
I think he'll have a couple of moments where it's like, oh,
that's rough, but he'll have a couple of moments as
where as like Okay, yeah like it.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
You know, you gotta maybe connects on a big deep
ball or something like that, hopefully against the Panthers' third
strikers UH nine one oh number said they post quarterback
stats every day. Sanders has been the most accurate out
of all their quarterbacks. When you say accurate, are you
talking completion percentage? Because I mean when we've talked to
we talked to multiple beat writers yesterday Zach Jackson joined
the show. They seem to indicate it's a lot of
(08:13):
checkdowns and short stuff, which is a nice way to
get to a seventy percent completion percentage. So, I again,
I'm not anti Shador Sanders. I just don't I don't
know what he's going to be at the NFL level.
I don't know if Cleveland and Stefanski are the right
fit for him. I don't know what their intentions are
for this season. They might be bad. And if they're bad,
are they aiming for a quarterback in the twenty six draft?
(08:35):
Probably not going to be arch Manning By the way
as Jimmy Haslam already came out and said last week
to a reporter he doesn't expect arch Manning to come
out of Texas. And Archie Manning told some publication in
Texas in an interview yesterday that yeah, he's staying at Texas.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
So that's what done. Right.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
So if it's not a march for arch you know
who would Cleveland cove it? As the number one overall
quarterback pick in twenty twenty six, Drew Aller.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
That or to go to the Palmetto State, Lenora Sellers
or Knutt. Yeah, yeah, I don't think he's that high
I ever, but you never know.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
And plus this is the Browns we're talking about. Yeah,
their owner took advice from a homeless man on who
to take.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
He did do that, all right? What else you got?
Speaker 3 (09:19):
All right?
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Moving on to the Carolina Panthers. Of course, Bryce Young
will be playing tomorrow. The question is will it be
one driver or two drives. That's really up to debate
and up to what happens. Andy Dalton will play, but
we're gonna be seeing a lot of the plumber Jack
Plumber And yesterday Dave Canals talked about Jack Plumber and
how he's different and has improved from last year where
it was really rough to this year.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Yeah, a lot more prepared, you know.
Speaker 7 (09:43):
I saw him take take steps throughout last preseason from
one game to the next in terms of his operation,
just calming down, knowing how to win his way. And
then I saw him play really well against the Bills
in the third preseason game. So I fully expect, you know,
Jack to continue to take strides. He's been there before,
he knows all the words, and also to just help
(10:05):
elevate the rest of the group, because when you get
out there in games, sometimes a guy might not line
up properly. Sometimes the clock's running low, and hey, we
gotta go, we gotta go. So I feel really confident
that he'll be able to help that group operate.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Isn't he still younger than Tyler Shook? I think he is, right.
I'm pretty sure Jack Plumber is still younger than Tyler
Schoff Shook Schaffer.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Wait what, I don't know, man.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
I always forget how to pronounce his last name, And
it won't matter because we won't have to do that
a year from now because he'll be gone.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
I'm sure.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Yeah, Jack Plummer is twenty five, Shook his twenty six,
and Jack Plummer was in college for a long time too.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
That's what I'm saying, both former Louisville quarterbacks like you know, Uh,
I don't know, like Jack's had an off season in
the system, just like Bryce. I'm sure he's gotten better.
I also hope we never have to to watch Jack
play football this year, so outside of preseason of course,
So nothing personal, Jack, but I hope we watch you
hold a clipboard all year long.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
What else you got?
Speaker 8 (11:03):
All?
Speaker 6 (11:03):
Right?
Speaker 4 (11:03):
Earlier this week mark nineteen years since Calladagan Knights hit theaters,
which is hard to believe. And also earlier this week,
Kyle Larson was on the Games with Names podcast name
Yeah Games with Names podcasts I Can Get You Tricked
Up with Julian Edelman and uh. It's caused a lot
of conversation within the NASCAR community about Talladegan Knights in
(11:25):
The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Do you guys like Talladega Knights? Is that movie funny
or is that dumb for you? I mean, I like
the movie.
Speaker 9 (11:32):
I think it did not do anything good.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
For our sport.
Speaker 9 (11:36):
I think it turned our sport into like a joke, unfortunately,
but it is. I mean, that's gonna be like the
most one of the most popular races.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
It's just a funny comedy with those boys.
Speaker 9 (11:48):
Yeah, but that's just I feel like it just the
rest of the world, like that's what they think about
our sport.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Now, what a dumb take? Like, I'm sorry, what a
dumb take? Does he think that basketball is how people see?
You know where I'm going with that. I'm gonna let
you weigh in on this. But bro, it's not a documentary, no,
But do you think people watch Talladaga nights and they
were like, wow, NASCAR drivers are definitely all hopped up
(12:13):
on mountain dew and praying to Baby Jesus.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
No, Bro, they thought that already.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
It doesn't help when a legend does buy to Talladegan
Knight's house and Kevin harvicdo I will say that that's
pretty funny. But isn't the best racing movie ever? Know,
it's the only one NASCAR related that's really come out
in the last twenty twenty five years. I like it,
there are parts of it that I don't like it,
specifically the racing in the movie is crape shifting it?
(12:39):
How they could give me a break?
Speaker 1 (12:41):
And I just I mean, the Sandlot is one of
my favorite movies of all time, and the baseball scenes
and that aren't particularly believable either. You know, there are
plenty of baseball and basketball movies that we like where
the action is not really all that accurate or not
all that great. You're banking on actors to do Nascar
is different. I guess I just don't really understand this
(13:01):
is about Kyle. But it's also not the first time
that we've heard this from some people where it's like, well,
we don't think it made us look good.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Well, well, William Byron had that sentiment.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
I think I also saw Bubble Walls and Ryan Blaney
earlier this year have something similar to that as well.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
But honestly, and I'm gonna be a jerk here, but
you think that movie made NASCAR look worse than you
dropping a hard r on a racing stream, bro, I mean,
come on, what are we talking about it? And I
don't think he's going after the movie. I just don't
understand why some people get worked up, like do you
think Happy Gilmore is representative of the PGA tour?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
No, of course not absolutely, not right, That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
So like, I don't understand NASCAR drivers who are like
I don't like that movie because it made us look bad.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Nobody who watched.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
It thought it was a documentary, man, Just funny, that's all,
just funny. That's what did you say? The best audio
in the world of sports. When we return, Carla Metz,
we'll talk to NASCAR and we'll talk some football sports
Radio ninety two to seven WF and z.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
OH.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
The text line is golden, following the Kyle Larson clip
with Julian Edelman where Kyle Larson said he liked Talladega Knights,
but he really felt like it made NASCAR look bad.
And he's not the first guy to say this, and
I truly don't get it. Like Kyle, I'm sure you're
a really nice guy, no offense intended, but I think
that's such an insane take. Nobody who ever watched Talladega
(14:42):
Knights thought it was a documentary.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
I don't understand that.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
AJ said, Hey, KB, the longest yard really made football
players look bad too?
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Yeah, who else said that?
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Somebody said Cole Trickle was passing dudes in days of
thunder like he was on I eighty five. I think
somebody sent that a minute ago. I dropping the hammer.
Yeah he drives, he's on ninety five. Happy Gilmour really
did damage to the reputation of the PGA tour. I'm
sure I don't get that take.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
I really agree Road Garter gave a bad taste to
the Chicago Cubs. I mean, a little kid playing for
the Chicago Cubs as an eight.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Year old, Like, what the hell are they doing? Well,
that's the bicycle Herd said, Rookie of the year. You
mean to tell me a teenager can't break his arm
and then throw as hard as Roger Clemens.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
I news to me. I mean, and what the hell
or the Minnesota Twins doing. Let the owner have the
eleven year old take over to team and his will.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Oh man, I have that's the one that I need
to rewatch.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
So great.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
I haven't seen that one. Oh man, it's been a
very very long time. I wonder if I was wondering
the other day, is that one? Is that one good
for kids? Little big League? By the ways, what we're
talking about. Absolutely yes, it's It's a top five baseball
movie of all time for me. Michael said, space Jam
really ruined my view of the NBA.
Speaker 4 (15:55):
What do you mean these mon stars could take their
basketball abilities?
Speaker 1 (15:58):
I don't know what Kyle Larson talking about. Maybe Carlo
Metz knows. The CW studio host and of course he's
back with the Panthers here in the preseason. Was taking
in Panthers practice yesterday against the Browns. Carla Met's back
with us on the hotline. Carla, what's going on?
Speaker 2 (16:11):
How you been?
Speaker 8 (16:13):
I'm doing good. Yeah, both preparing for a race and
for this preseason game against the Browns tomorrow night. My
plate is pretty full as yours is. I'm sure. I'm
sure too.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Yeah, you and I are both. It's that this time
of year for us. We're grateful for it, we get
all that, but it is a lot. Now I do
to get you to weigh in real quick. Kyle Larson
said that he doesn't like that Talladagan Knights. He feels like,
you know, makes makes NASCAR drivers kind of look bad.
I don't get it, Carla. We all know it's not
a documentary.
Speaker 8 (16:37):
Well, I'm gonna say, I mean, I think that was
also around the time where you know, slapstick comedies were
just getting produced, you know, just numerous ones, right, I
mean that was the same time that Step Brothers and
all of those little paral movies got made. I think
the biggest thing, at least from a NASCAR perspective where
they're coming from, I think, is like when you think
of NASCAR, like what movie pops into your and I
(17:00):
think for a lot of people it probably is Taladay
to Night. That doesn't necessarily mean that you're taking it
serious or not serious, but there's just not that many.
I mean, there's some good racing movies out there, but
there's just not you know, outside of Days of Thunder
and some other ones. You know, there's just not the
ones that you really like bring to the forefront of
your mind as opposed to maybe some other sports. Maybe
that's where he's coming from. I'm trying to play Devil's advocate. Yeah,
(17:23):
I definitely don't think it. You know, it's definitely not
a representation of what NASCAR is. But again, you know,
any kind of attention in that area I think can
be good attention.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
Yeah, listen, I'm with you, and you're right to play
Devil's advocate.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
That's fine.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
It makes for a fun conversation, but there is one
guy on the text line, Michigan Shawn, who just said
Kyle Larson is completely right. The other several hundred texts disagrees.
But anyway, we'll leave that alone for right now. Let
me go to football. We'll come back to racing for
a second, because we have a lot of Panthers fans
chomping at the bit to hear about how the boys
look out there on the field and thoughts on what
we've seen so far. You know, you and I were
(18:00):
standing similar place yesterday watching practice. We all had a
better view of the Panthers offense than we did of
the Panthers defense. But from what you saw yesterday, what'd
you think what stood out to you?
Speaker 8 (18:11):
Yeah? I mean I liked the way that they were
moving the ball. You know, I think that's kind of
a big focal point for the preseason right now, is
just this tempo of offense and how big of strides
they've taken from year one to year two under this
system with Dave Canalis. They certainly, I think, you know,
just watching them look more comfortable in what they're doing.
And that says a lot too, because they've got some
(18:32):
other some new pieces on offense still that are, you know,
just in year one of the system. But I think
it's just the veteran presence around that thinking about Bryce
she Young being more confident. You've got Adam feeling out there, JT.
Sanders a tight end making big strides this year in
the system too. So I think there's just a comfortability
with this offense that makes you excited about watching it.
(18:54):
And then to you know, Bryce Shung kind of said
after you know, the practice yesterday, there was an element
of surprise is going up against the Browns defense, the
first defense they've seen outside of their own all of
training camp that you know, it felt good to see
exactly what the execution of the offense looked like when
you when you're putting it up against the defense that's
not as familiar with you. So I'm super excited about seeing,
(19:17):
you know, maybe these first couple of drives tomorrow night
to see what the first team actually looks like. But yeah,
I feel, you know, pretty good about where the offense is,
even though I think, you know, there's some questions of
some battles on that side.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Still yeah, and look, the offense is the big story
because they drafted a wide receiver Bryce is in year three.
It's critical they brought in an additional thousand yard back,
they brought the entire offensive line back, all the things
that you already know. But I think maybe the best
thing that came out of practice yesterday, Carla, is the
reports that the defense had a really good day against
(19:54):
the run for Cleveland. Now, again, it's joint practice. We
should not we should be very careful not to try
to extra appolate too much. But you and I both
watched that defense every Sunday last year. To get reports
that the run defense was stout yesterday, that's great news.
Speaker 8 (20:08):
That's great news, and especially I think just because there
are so many questions and so many guys on defense
that we haven't seen and honestly, just I think guys
that haven't played with other guys, right, I mean, think
about Derek Brown and dj Wanham never got a chance
to line up against each other last season on the defense,
and so to kind of maybe see that take place
(20:30):
as we get through the preseason. You know, I don't
know how aggressive they're going to be with the dB there,
but I think, yeah, just knowing that you've got those
pieces in place, but then to know that you've got
some guys that can actually stop the run and those
edge rushers that they brought in. I think there's a
lot of competition in that room that we maybe haven't
gotten a chance to see because the practice fields and
(20:52):
the way that things are set up, Like I just
I feel like we haven't gotten our eyes on it yet.
So that's going to be really fun to see tomorrow.
And I mean and going up against the Browns offense
tomorrow that you know, I have just as many question
marks at least for this preseason run. A lot of
people are going to be interested to see Shador and
to see that the ground game and what they've got
(21:13):
going on that side of the ball. But a great
opportunity for this defense to get some reps under their
belt and working together and we'll see how quick, how
quick they are, because that's that's the big thing that also,
you know, you look at the defensive line too, it's
just bigger bodies this year and that's going to make
a huge difference.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
You know, as far as I go on the offensive side.
Specific to Tedero McMillan, I wanted to bring this up
with you too. You know, he's a top ten pick
and he's listed as a starter on the depth chart.
I do think he can make an impact at some
point this year, but I am I'm fully prepared for
him to start slow. I hope he doesn't, and you know,
it'd be great if he didn't. But he's still a
(21:50):
rookie and he has had a little bit of an
up and down training camp. A lot of good but
some things that need to be polished. Where where are
you in terms of expectations and how much he impacts
this offense, say in the first four games of the.
Speaker 8 (22:01):
Season, Well, I think what we've seen in practice so
far is just that he has the ability to make
that splash play or that one hand to grab, you know,
or just you know, get up in the air and
make a play when maybe there wasn't one. We've seen
a little bit of offscript that he's been successful on,
and I think I will say, you know, I do
expect him to have those plenty of rookie moments this season,
(22:24):
but I think his talent and his ability is going
to outweigh those. And also you start listening to guys
like Mike Jackson, you know, going up against him every day,
and j C. Horn certainly, these guys that he's really
kind of learning from on, you know, going up against
on the defense. But they're saying, you know, we're able
to teach him, and he's able to be corrected, and
you know, we're telling him something one week and the
(22:46):
next week he's fixing it. So I do definitely believe
he's going to have those rookie moments, but how quickly
is he going to move on from them. I have
more confidence, I think in the fact that he's, you know,
a humble enough guy to know that he can have
the confidence to go make a play but also correct
what he needs to in a quick amount of time.
And I think that's what coaches are seeing from him too.
(23:07):
So we may see those mistakes, but just expect him
to hopefully turn it around pretty quickly if we do.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
Carlo Met's with us here on the hotline talking Panthers
and now talking racing Iowa on Sunday, the Iowa Corn
three P fifty powered by Ethanol. It was it was
a good race, was certainly for William Byron, a dramatic win,
and you know, the fuel mileage strategy there at the
end was really impressive stuff. He got one hundred and
forty laps out of that final tank of gas, and
(23:33):
the caution certainly helped too. But William Byron wins again.
What stood out from Iowa?
Speaker 8 (23:38):
Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, there were a
lot of different takes after this race. I think it
was certainly good for William Byron, who's been on the
cusp of another win, you know, his only other win
Daytona five hundred to start the season, but he's been
really close before, so to see him kind of carry
through and actually punch that win in, I think that
was big for him, for his crew chief Rudy Fugel,
(23:58):
for his team as a whole, to know that they still,
you know, can accomplish more this season. But as far
as you know, a shorter track, we're still getting used
to Iowa. We're still getting used to the characteristics of
this track, and and a lot of people were pretty
critical of this being another fuel mileage race, which just
doesn't seem right when you're talking about a short track
(24:19):
in NASCAR. So yeah, I mean, I thought it was
a good race for what it was. But I still
think that there's a lot to be said about, you know,
the product of racing when it comes to this car
and you know, are we wanting it to be a
fuel mileage race when we're going to a short track.
I think a lot of people in the industry don't
(24:40):
think that's you know, necessarily the best case for the
longevity of the sport, but I certainly know that NASCAR
is probably you know, having those conversations even this week,
trying to improve the product as well.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
Any quick thoughts on Sam Mayer winning the Exfinity Series race.
Speaker 8 (24:54):
That was competitive, Yeah, I mean the Hoss Factories first
win in the Exfinity Series since they kind of rebranded
from Stuart Hoss Racing, and that was really big for them.
It was big for Ford, right, Chevrolet has dominated in
the Xfinity Series this year. I think they've led over
like seventy six percent of the lapse this season, so
(25:14):
that was really big for that camp. And then of
course Sam Mayor, he was already you know, doing really
well in the point standings, he just didn't have that win,
and he had been close before, a lot of top fives,
a lot of consistency just this season in the top fifteen,
so I'm not surprised by it at all that he
finally got that win and you know went ahead and
locked himself into the playoffs. Now he's only sixteen points
(25:38):
out of the regular season because he has done so
well in the point standing. So the battle for the
regular championship on the Efinity Series side right now between
Justin Augar and Connor Zilich, they're both tied at the
top right now, Sam Mayor sixteen points below. So as
we're nearing the end of the regular season for that series,
it'll be really fun, I think to keep up with
who's where in the points, and the thing could be
(26:00):
said for the Cup Series because that's pretty tight as well.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
Well, glad you said that, because I think we're down
to what six races left in the regular season?
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Is it? Is it three? I'm sorry?
Speaker 10 (26:07):
Three?
Speaker 1 (26:07):
What am I thinking? Three in the regular season? And
it starts at Watkins Glenn this weekend. They're going back
to the Glenn. Just your your general expectations, what you're
looking for and who's most desperate for a win.
Speaker 8 (26:18):
Yeah, I mean I think there's a lot of people
in the field. If you're talking Cup Series, I mean, yeah,
you are looking at that regular season battle. I think
it's William Byron, Chase Elliott ending of losing the regular
season lead this past week, so you got the Hendrick
Pamp up top and certainly some other guys that are
going to be vying for that those extra points right
that you get if you get the regular season championship.
(26:41):
But Watkins Glenn really fun race track. I mean, it
is a road course, but it's really not like anything
else that that we go to. I've heard a lot
of guys this week talk about how you know, typically
for road courses you want to lean heavily on the brakes,
and it's how you use the brakes that help you
go around this track. This track has been known as
kind of the super Speedway of road courses, so speed
(27:03):
actually plays a bigger factor here. So a lot of
guys that are strong at the ovals might perform a
little bit better here. And that's saying a lot. Because
you're going to have Connor Villach and Shane van Gisbergen
both in the Cup Series and the Ecxinity Series this weekend.
We know how good those guys are at road courses.
But again, like I said, don't be surprised if you
see some other guys performing well and possibly sneak a
(27:26):
win away from those guys.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
All right, Carla Metz covering NASCAR, the Panthers and more, and,
as her ex bio says, fluent in Southern vernacular.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
In case you haven't picked up on that.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
Hanging out with us her regular Thursday conversation, although a
little bit later this week. We appreciate you as always.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
We'll see you soon, all right, Thanks, Kyle.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
Carlo Metz hit us up on the FanDuel text line
seven oh four five seven ninety six to ten. I
would love to hear from you. Much of that conversation
on the text line featured the text line being populated
with more jokes about Kyle Larson's Talladega Knight's take seven
oh four number said little while ruined basketball for me?
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Uh, buffet, that was.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
A good movie. I don't care. You know what a
funny thing about that is. You know who's in that movie? Uh,
Jesse Plemons? Is he really m hm Jesse Plemons?
Speaker 3 (28:16):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (28:16):
From Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad?
Speaker 3 (28:19):
Breaking Bad? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (28:20):
Isn't he moret? What's he more known for?
Speaker 4 (28:22):
I thought, Uh, really depends. I mean, he did get
him Breaking Bad into the last season, so he wasn't
in there that long. But he was a very integral
character of that last season. He's also done a lot
of really good movies. And here's the thing. You don't
even know who he's married to. I don't who is
Jesse Plemon's married to Kirston Dunce.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
Stop it?
Speaker 3 (28:41):
Yeah what? Yes?
Speaker 4 (28:44):
How do you know all this stuff? I just know
he's one of the best actors of the last ten years. Really, yes,
he is a hell of an actor. What is Kirsten
Dunst most known for Roncley Spider Man? She was Mary
Jane Watson civer Dat or Bring It On the Cheerleader.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
Yeah. She was also Marie Antoinette.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Oh yeah, that's right, she was.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
That movie came out in the mid two thousand.
Speaker 1 (29:08):
Jesse Plemons is married to Kirsten Dunst. Yeah, da have
you learned something new every day?
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Good for him?
Speaker 2 (29:13):
How about that? Anyway?
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Concord Jason said, do you wanna man ruined the w
NBA for me? Well, boy, the w NBA is I
like how Colin was calling it the doze.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
Throwing the doze on the floor.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
It's not funny, but like the reaction to it has
been a little humorous. It's it's a bunch of crypto bros.
Who were looking for a viral marketing campaign and they
got it. A crypto group has claimed responsibility for throwing
the sex toys on the floor Neon green ones.
Speaker 4 (29:47):
By the way, at w NBA Games, randing does matter, Kyle.
It really stands out with the Neon green.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
The crypto group says the acts are a protest against
the quote unquote toxic environment in the crypto world and
not meant to disrespect to female athletes. Really, really, so,
of all the objects you could have thrown on the
floor during WNBA Games to protest the toxic environment in
(30:17):
the crypto world, you choose to throw does on the floor.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
I don't believe you. I really don't believe you.
Speaker 1 (30:27):
And as everyone else has pointed out at this point,
how they snuck those into the arena is an answer
I probably know, but also still don't want the answer to.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Oh God, why do you have to put that in
my head.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
Just because somebody else put it in mind, namely my wife?
Speaker 4 (30:46):
My wife in the words of Microsoft, that's what she said.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
All right, really leave that alone. Right now, we go
to smoke on the headlines, all.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
Right, before we get into what I need to get
who you know It was interesting how Carla was talking
about how the regular season standings for both the Exfinity
and NASCAR Cup series are very tight down to stretch
here as we.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Get into the end of the regular season.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
Okay, it's almost like we can naturally let these races
play out and championship battles play out.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
Get a hint, all right?
Speaker 4 (31:21):
Anyway, I can't believe this is actually a real sentence too.
Vontese Perfect is in the news again, Kyle, really do
tell not for bad news. He is apparently now a
defensive analyst for UNLV.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Oh, good for him.
Speaker 4 (31:37):
Yeah, I just never thought Vantees Perfect would be a
coach in football.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
I didn't either. I do have to wonder now what
kind of coach he is and if UNLV defensive players,
you know, maybe twist some ankles or go head hunting,
could that be the end of Vantees Perfect in his
coaching career. Yeah, like I do wonder is he a
more grown up, you know, version of him himself as
many of us are as we age, And is he
teaching football, you know, the conventional way, or is does
(32:06):
his defense have a little extra edge to him like
he did little extra edge from smelling salts. Yeah, that's right.
What else you got?
Speaker 3 (32:12):
All right?
Speaker 4 (32:13):
And this is random. Don't really want to get into politics,
but this is just so random I had to include it. Okay,
Derek Dooley, the former Tennessee head coach, is running for
senate in Georgia.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
I mean, this is one of the most random stories.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
And Derek Dooley, who we have not heard of in
ten years as randomly pops up running for senate.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
I could not believe this when I saw it, because
you and I had a full blown conversation about Derek
Dooley what a couple of weeks ago, uh huh, being
one of the worst coaches in yeah football history, and
as you pointed out, my favorite joke on the internet
so far. As well, he knows all about losing in Georgia.
So this will not go well for him.
Speaker 4 (32:46):
I will say, smart of him not to run in
Tennessee because it would have been a definite note from
the get go.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
Yeah you're not lying about that, all right, Well, come back,
we'll tell you who balled out.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
We'll take some phone calls.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Marques is up First Sports Radio ninety two to seven
wfn Z.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
City. Get on your.
Speaker 10 (33:09):
Feet, intercepted by Julius Peppers and he takes it all
the way forty seven yards for the score.
Speaker 8 (33:22):
Here he came Jimmy.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Jimmy Johnson brings.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
It away from the man.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
On the other hand, embarrassed.
Speaker 8 (33:40):
With the k.
Speaker 1 (33:44):
High performers, big time achievers. We call it who balled
Out And it's powered by High Performance real Estate Advisors
and the biggest dad gumballer of them all, Thomas L.
Speaker 5 (33:53):
Rodd.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Go to high Performance real Estate dot Com and they'll
see you at the closing table. Smoke would you bring
for the people? I'm gonna need some help with this one.
I'm gonna ask on the legend himself, Chris Berman. Who
balled out?
Speaker 10 (34:02):
Dom dom Damn dam dom beau be dam dom Capers.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
Yes, Dom Capers, the og balled out because today is
his seventy fifth birthday. Happy birthday, dom Capers. Your hair
still looks in pristine condition. Bro, That's fantastic, that's awesome.
I'm going with the Milwaukee Brewers. You know how good
they've been lately.
Speaker 1 (34:25):
I'm good but no, But do you like have you
been generally following how good the Milwaukee Brewers are?
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (34:30):
And that's even without with one of their best players
getting hurt over the last well. It's also a team
that could barely piece together a starting rotation back in April.
A lot of folks probably forgot about that. And they
don't hit a ton of home runs.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
But they find themselves an MLB best twenty five games
over five hundred after the win against the Braves on Tuesday,
and they are forty four and sixty and they're sorry,
forty four and sixteen in their last sixty games. It's
the best sixty game stretch in franchise history. They're twenty
(35:03):
three and six in their last twenty nine road games.
Check out twenty three and six in their last twenty
nine road games, including eleven and one in the last dozen,
with six straight wins on the road. They have a
plus one twenty six run differential. It's the best in
the majors, which is, you know, pretty crazy, considering it
was minus thirty two after an zero to four start
(35:24):
to this season. Somehow, Pat Murphy and Milwaukee have done
it again. I don't know how far.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
They make it.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
I don't know if they make a deep run of
the playoffs, but Milwaukee just continues to build really good
baseball teams here recently.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
They've been extremely consistent over the last decade, and I
will say, don't know if it's going to lead to
postseason success yet again that's been the main question with him.
But man, they've been able to find some diamonds into
rough prime example being Andrew Vaughn, the White Sox former
first baseman, barely by batting above the Mendoza line when
he got traded. He has been on fire the last
(35:55):
month month and a half. For the Brewers, of course,
Christian Yellis has kind of turned back to clock this year.
You're mainly staying healthy as I knock on wood, and
then they've gotten big contributions from Jose Quintana and their
pitching staff has been great.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
Man.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
Man, part of me, I tell you what, man, part
of me hopes, part of me thinks. You know, even
as a Red Sox fan, it would be awesome for
them to win it this year, after you know, all
that's happened over the past few years. That would be
so awesome, especially for Bob Win. One for Bob.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Speaking of John Gruden, I see we have the one
cut here today. There was also a second one from
yesterday that maybe we can bring back. John Gruden has
weighed in on the Carolina Panthers. I'll play this one
for you. We'll see if smoke can dig up the
other one while we wait. But John Gruden this was
Is this his barstool podcast? I believe it is right, yes,
because he actually did this. On Friday, he did a
(36:49):
NFC South preview. The NFC South preview was two hours
and fifteen minutes long. Of course it was, I mean,
just an absolute football stick.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
That guy.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Two hours and fifteen minutes on an NFC South preview. Also,
by the way, we have to talk about the rumors
that Florida State could be looking at him if Mike
Norvell doesn't you work out. I'm still not sure I
believe it. But anyway, here's John Gruden on his podcast
Friday talking about Bryce Young last year into this year.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
There are some concerns.
Speaker 5 (37:20):
And I thought he did play small rich his first
year or so. I didn't think he had a real
good status in the pocket. I thought he had a
hard time seeing. It looked like the rush as it
compressed around him really inhibited his ability to see and
throw the ball accurately. But I think as they've improved
with their system, with their personnel, and I think his
(37:43):
confidence level. I think he has shown that he can function.
But can you do it for the length of a
seventeen game regular season. Can you do it in weather
when the wind is blowing sideways? Do you have the
arm to go on the road in Buffalo or Kansas
City or New Ing in a tough place to play
in December and win with the physical limitations.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
That's something he's got to do.
Speaker 2 (38:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Well, I mean, first of all, John's right about all that.
I don't have any problem with any take from John
Gruden right there. It's the same stuff we've been saying
about Bryce. I want to believe in Bryce Young, and
I think there are signs and reasons to believe that.
You can believe in Bryce Young, but he's got to
sustain it for an entire season now real quick. To
John's point, the good news is he talked about going
(38:29):
into cold weather environments in December.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
Panthers don't have to do that this year.
Speaker 1 (38:34):
Their December games are in New Orleans, two in Carolina,
and one in Tampa. So right, if you make the playoffs,
then we might be having a different story.
Speaker 4 (38:44):
Do you have a different conversation. Do you have an
early November game against the Packers. They did play around
that time in twenty nineteen. Remember that was a snow game,
So could.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Good snow in Green Bay? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Yeah, so, but nothing out of the ordinary in terms.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
Of well, you know you said early, it's not gonna
snow in Green Bay November second. So no, it's not
gonna do that. Not a November second.
Speaker 4 (39:03):
I remember in twenty nineteen. It was a late October
early November game. Remember that was the one where they
gave it to the Christian McCaffrey at the three yard
line and he ran right into the back of Greg
Van Roten Like Greg Van Roton I think missed the
block and he couldn't get into touchdown.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
That was like the.
Speaker 4 (39:18):
Let's see twenty nineteen Carolina Panthers. I swear it was
an early November game. Yeah, let me.
Speaker 1 (39:23):
Well, anyway, while you look for that, here's more from
John Gruden. Like, if you liked the Bryce Young take,
stick around for the defense take. Here's here's John Gruden
on the Panthers revamp defense.
Speaker 5 (39:34):
Patrick Jones of the Vikings and dj Wanham of Panther
who had five and a half sacks last year, they
look like something.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
And then when you get into.
Speaker 5 (39:43):
The fourth quarter pass rush or the third down situations,
they go nickel with Patrick Jones, Derek Brown. You got
Wharton and want them on the field together. He got
a Shawn Robinson, and then he got Cam Jackson, a
guy you just drafted out of Florida.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
Hell's bell.
Speaker 5 (40:00):
You got the two rookie scorting and ooh man me
Ellen say it, Jacob.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
They got a lot of guys.
Speaker 5 (40:06):
I mean, they're completely different front four. So now when
Tampa comes in here or Atlanta comes in here with
all these weapons and all these passes, you got some
guys that can at least execute and get them in
third down and long.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
Hey, not even mention of Bobby Brown right there either.
He went through just about everybody except for Bobby Brown.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
Was not as prerogative on that breakdown there.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
That's really good. You snuck that in. That was good,
all right? Seven oh four, five, seven ninety six ten.
