Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet today.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
All right, The question to start the hour is, got
some Game Cox fans trash talking me about Sunday's AFLAC
kickoff game between the game Cocks and the Hokies. It's
Shane Beemer versus his alma mater. I asked the question
because Frank Beemer came up and Gamecock Moody wants smoke
to record me crying as he says it. When I
see Frank Beamer donning South Carolina gear to support his son, Shane,

(00:46):
I don't know that that's gonna happen, but I do.
I think it begs the question if you were in
their shoes, right, if your son or daughter. But in
this case, your son is coaching a team in a
big game like this, opposite your alma mater, and in
Frank's where he played, where he coached, more or less,
where he grew up. I can't imagine that's easy necessarily,

(01:07):
but it is his son. It is blood right. So
like my prediction is Frank comes out where like a
garnet slash maroon, you know blazer. Maybe maybe a pin
like there could be you think he's gonna go Roy William.
Maybe there could be a lapel pin, you know in
South Caon. Maybe, but even a lapel South Carolina pen
is gonna bother me. It's all going to bother me
with Frank because we've never had to deal with anything

(01:28):
like this before.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yeah, thinking of william situation.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, we even down bad for a decade now. Things
have not been easy in Blacksburg. And then we have
to watch Frank on that sideline with South Carolina emblazoned
anywhere on his person. It's gonna hurt. But what would
you do if it was your kid? And there aren't
really interesting texts coming in? Some of them are funny.
Juicy Jay, Juicy Junior. Pardon me, said KB, I graduated

(01:52):
from West Point, Let's go said, I could never ever
wear blue and gold. If my son coached for Navy,
I would support him in every other game of the
year except that one. I'm so glad you said that,
because I'm headed back to Army Navy again this December
in Baltimore, and I see it every year. There's just
no way right now. That one's a little different, but
like father son, No, they're not switching sides for that one,

(02:14):
that's for sure.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Yeah, and at the end of the day, you're playing
for the same team at the end, at the end
of the day.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, big picture, greater good, all that absolutely, Jamie and
Belmont says KB. I'm a State grad, but my son
goes to Carolina. I've gone to a few football games
with him in Chapel Hill. Best I can do is
a white T shirt with a little bit of blue trim.
And that's not even in games versus State. That's just
against random teams. I could never go full Carolina blue. Yeah,
but not even if your son was coaching on the

(02:41):
opposite sideline. That's what I'm asking because that's a really
big difference. Turkey leg says, I would just make a
T shirt with my son wearing his work clothes to
show everyone I supportive, like Myrtle Beach style, like airbrush
T shirt of him standing on the sidelines, like, hey,
this is my son, this is what he does.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Imagining Frank Bieber and nut shirt.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Are you still technically wearing gamecock gear?

Speaker 5 (03:04):
Though?

Speaker 2 (03:04):
If it's a picture of Shane in game cocks gear
airbrushed on your T shirt. I think I don't know
that that counts actually, but that's fine.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
Honestly, I would because the airbrush market is a lot
better in South Carolina than it is in Virginia.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
I would, I feel like, would be safe to assume.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Have you been to Virginia Beach? Yeah, they're out there too.
Gator ball, says f No, I'm rocking where I went
to school and played ball. Go Gators, chomp, chomp.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
All right.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
So if your son was the head coach of the
Georgia Bulldogs at the world's Greatest cocktail party, maybe not
that one, but is yeah, I guess that one. You
couldn't bring yourself to wear your kids. I think about
this sometimes, like my worst nightmare is one of my
kids wants to go to UVA.

Speaker 6 (03:43):
But so.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
University. But it's still my worst nightmare. I don't want
I don't want to wear their gear. I don't want
that to happen. He can go to Carolina, so she
can go to Carolina. They go Duke, they go to Alabama,
they go a lot of places. They can go to
South Carolina. Just don't go to UVA. That's all I
ask daddy's got a stroke the check. But these are interesting, man,
Like there are people who say they can lots of
folks just.

Speaker 6 (04:03):
Saying they would keep it neutral.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Caleb Williams Nail Tech says, tough call, but ultimately, my
son is my legacy, so I'm supporting him. That being said,
if he's in Carolina Blue, he's on his own. That's
good stuff. Man, where's my bike? My position is, I
think you need to support your son over your alma mater.
I mean, seriously, it's blood over a school. But also
fully expect that your alma mater is going to boo

(04:28):
you and be fine with that. Ain't nobody booing Frank
You don't boot Frank Well. That's like booing Jesus. You don't,
you don't. It's like in our world, you don't boot
Frank Beamer. That's equivalent to booing Jesus.

Speaker 6 (04:37):
Well.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
Plus, here's the main thing. He's the nicest guy in
the world too. Here's the main thing here. South Carolina
Virginia Tech are not rivals, not like big rivals or anything.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
No, no, no, no no, it's more former rivals in the Southern
Conference way back when, back before color televisions back in
the days of Calvin Coolid when everybody had rabbit ears
on their TVs. Yes, well, Eisenhower, are that at a
little too far back with Calvin Coolid?

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (05:00):
But yeah, so, I mean most people don't remember those days,
so I think it'll be all right.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
It won't be the end of the world.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
Now, if you wore a Virginia if he wore a
Virginia T shirt, and Shane was coaching at Virginia, or
God help you never happened, or if yeah, if it
was like Miami or something like that, then I feel
like you you basically uh be like Sanford and Son.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Oh heart attack right there.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
But sure, but South Carolina it will suck, especially after
the last decade.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
But I don't think it would be the end of
the world for you.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Okay, Mountaineer Harry says, KB, would you let your kid
go to West Virginia for what? Why would why would
he be going there? Because you damn sure ain't going
to school there, not for an education. Come on, mountain
deer Harry, No, no, he's not going to I'm not
writing any out of state checks to send my kid
to Morgantown.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
I'm not doing it here.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
If you had gounder your head and one of your
children was thinking of going to one of these two schools,
and you had to pick one, gun to your head,
come on, West Virginia or Virginia?

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Which one you picking?

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Come on, dude, really, really, yeah.

Speaker 6 (06:02):
I guess UVA.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
If I had to pick better education, Yeah, well yeah,
I mean the was to be fair, like, I give
West Virginia fans a hard time. It's not a bad school,
but you know, UVA is it's a very good but
it's a very good education. So if I had to
pick one, I'd let them go there, but I'd prefer
they went to Chapel Hill to State to Yeah, just no,
not not one of those two. If they can't follow
dad and mom to the old alma mater, then let's

(06:25):
at least stay in state and go to Carolina or
State or Duke or Wake. Let's just let's do let's
do that, all right, Maybe the game Cocks we can
do that too, all right? Seven oh four, five, seven
oh ninety six ten. Jay Bird asks a great question
before we get to the audio. He says, KB helped
me out. Did YouTube and Fox reach a deal yet?
I've not seen anything of you.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
No, I haven't. It's I heard of stuff on Monday.
I think it would go into effect this evening, but yeah,
it's it's that time of the year again. This is
the one downside with football season is is when all
these deals come to an end, it's like, all right, now,
really gonna get these deals done to the eleventh hour,
and unfortunately, we the viewers, lose out on this. So hopefully,

(07:07):
hopefully for you and a lot of people that have
YouTube TV, they figure this stuff out.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Because I'm about to cancel it. I gotta be honest
with you. I love YouTube TV, but I'm so sick
of this stuff like losing channels, carriage disputes left and right.
Haven't been able to watch the Hornets or the Braves
on there for four years now. The price keeps going up.
I mean, it's a great platform. They do a great job.
It's a fine viewing experience, but I'm really getting sick
of all the other bs. WoT box only goes so long. Yeah,

(07:32):
I'm with you, all right, let's go to smoke with
the best audio in sports.

Speaker 6 (07:35):
What did you say?

Speaker 5 (07:37):
You?

Speaker 3 (07:37):
What? What did you say?

Speaker 4 (07:39):
Hold up?

Speaker 6 (07:40):
Wait a minute, send me right?

Speaker 7 (07:43):
What I mean by that is all right?

Speaker 6 (07:46):
What you got?

Speaker 3 (07:46):
All right?

Speaker 4 (07:47):
Well, we start out actually with college football. You were
mentioning Virginia. Well, interesting topic came up with the AD
at Maryland last week, and it got picked up earlier
today by Breck McMurphy. He was on Andy and Ari
talking about college football realignment, not now, but five years
down the line. And it looks like a lot of

(08:07):
focus is going to be here in the old North
State and in Virginia moving forward.

Speaker 8 (08:11):
I think we're going to be twenty or twenty four
with the SEC and the Big Ten. The question is
what is going on with the Big twelve in the
ACC and are they going to be allowed to be
part of that group. I think it's very clear, Andy,
you want to speculate recklessly about who it'll be.

Speaker 6 (08:28):
Look after I reported.

Speaker 8 (08:29):
That this morning, I immediately got a text from someone
within the SEC and basically said what I've been thinking,
and that is North Carolina and Virginia will be highly
contested over both between both conferences and where they end up.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Look, no one knows.

Speaker 8 (08:47):
It's impossible to say, but I do, I do really
believe that they are the most attractive to both leagues.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
Yeah, I'm not surprised by this. I've been you know me,
I've been saying this for years. It makes all the
sense in the world for the SEC, if they are
going to expand again and achieve total geographic regional dominance,
to go ahead and plant flags in Virginia, North Carolina,
the entire quote unquote southeast. Get those bigger, because these
are two states, North Carolina and Virginia, that have really, really,

(09:17):
really big populations and have alumni bases in both for
lots of reasons. There are tons of SEC alumni in
places like Charlotte and Chapel Hill, in Raleig Durham area,
there's tons of you know, SEC alumni in places like
d C and Richmond that are working. So it makes
all the sense in the world for the SEC to
get into both of those states plant their flag. So

(09:37):
I expect that now. I'm also not surprised that at
those are the two schools. I mean, they flagship universities.
That's what they largely have in the SEC, the University
of Georgia the University of Florida, So the universities of
North Carolina and Virginia wouldn't make sense, even though there
will be people that say, huh, Uva sucks at football.

Speaker 6 (09:55):
Well, you're right, they do and have for a long time.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
But they're good at a lot of other sports.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
And I guess the belief is that maybe with some
SEC affiliation they could be better.

Speaker 6 (10:04):
We'll have to wait and see.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
I don't know, and I would bet you, by the way,
you know, I don't know this to be true. I
would bet you that there are more Uva brass in
favor of the Big Ten than the SEC.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
That sounds about right, I would.

Speaker 6 (10:19):
I would just that's a guess.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
I don't know that it's speculation, but I would guess
that there are more brass in Charlottesville that liked the
Big Ten.

Speaker 6 (10:26):
They're a little nuwody up there, all right. What else
you got?

Speaker 4 (10:29):
Well that they're close to Virginia or close to Maryland,
so that'll be a natural wib.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
You know, all dcc fos, nobody cared. Nobody cares about
Maryland anymore. They dug their own grave. Okay, nobody cares
about fair enough?

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Fair enough? All right?

Speaker 4 (10:40):
Well, moving back here to Charlotte, specifically to Carolina Panthers
yesterday lost and all the Adam Field and trade talk
over the last week has been the fact that Taylor
Moton has been extended, and for the first time since
that extension, he talked to the media yesterday and he
was asked was there a point in time where he
thought this was going to be his last year here
in Carolina?

Speaker 9 (11:00):
Really, just it triggles down to control what I control, right,
Like I said last interview, if this was my last season, year,
it's going to be my best one, and that's all
I could control is doing everything I can to help
this beat. Like I said, the offensive units, offensive lines
the whole team's best year.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
However, you know I can fill that role along with
it being.

Speaker 9 (11:20):
My best season, and that's still the goal, right That
hasn't changed. I still want this to be, you know,
collectively our best season yet and do everything I can
to help that happen.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
I just hope he has a monster year and lives
up to it. All nine of last year's offensive linemen,
as we've talked about, are back, and I think, what
is it smoke? I believe his PFF grade or something
similar last year was about sixth in the NFL. That's
where this new contract extension places him in terms of

(11:51):
value and rank. You know compensation among his peers at tackle,
so I think they've done well to keep him here
to pay him according to his performance. But he is
I think invaluable to that locker room. And I was
talking about this with JJ Jansen on our high school
football broadcast.

Speaker 6 (12:07):
The other day.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
But it's it's abundantly clear to anybody paying attention how
much Taylor Moten's presence inside that locker room means to
his teammates. He's a leader, he sets the tone. They
call him Pops in there, even though JJ's the oldest
one they I think they called Taylor Moton like Grandpa Law.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
Yeah, not at Shacks Gone. He's the second longest tenured
Carolina Panther.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
Yeah yeah, yeah, absolutely, but there's so much respect for
him inside that locker room.

Speaker 6 (12:32):
What else you got?

Speaker 3 (12:32):
All Right?

Speaker 4 (12:33):
We end with the Carolina Panthers, but we go back
in time because now that it's been five years since
Matt Ruhle officially took the reins of the head coaching
job at here in Carolina, we're starting to get some stories.
And the latest one came from running back Mike Davis,
who was on the Raw Room podcast. And now we
kind of know why when Christian McCaffery came back in
the midst of the twenty twenty season.

Speaker 10 (12:54):
He got hurt again. You know how was then like
Matt Ruhl when it was tiking a out, like they
didn't like how he did this and all that, such
and such. I ain't gonna lie to you. You know, when
you're playing good and you're balling, you don't realize the
stupid that's going on. We was doing stupid, like like
Mac got hurt, right Cemac, Like first day back from injury,

(13:17):
all right, we're gonna do a live goal on.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
Oh no, what okay? During the season? Yeah, live goal
on during this Yeah, during the season. That's insane. But
I'm saying it's this time live goal that's not even
being in the NFL practice my own but it was kind.

Speaker 10 (13:38):
Of it was like like the only reason bad on
but it's doing the seasons week. But like this this
light down the road, like I said talking about though,
I didn't realize. I feel just like I ain't realized
like she was doing because I was balling.

Speaker 6 (13:53):
You know what I'm saying, Like I ain't I ain't care.
That's wild.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
I have talked to a lot of people about Matt
Rule more so than I thought I would be in
the last couple of weeks, and it's been interesting to
hear how many of them have told me they actually
learned a lot of football from Matt Rule. They'll tell you,
Cam Newton will tell you, right. I think Cam's talked
about this. Him and Matter still buddies. Remember that time
when everybody's like Matt Rule hates Cam Newton, I'm like,

(14:18):
I don't know, man.

Speaker 4 (14:18):
When they were doing who Quarterbacks at the same time
with Ye and I was like, I don't know, man.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
They seem to get along, okay, And I'm not saying
that it was perfect, But it turns out because I think,
didn't he have Matt Rule on his podcast or something recently,
like they did something together recently, they're actually kind of buddies.
So anyway, point being, I've heard a lot of people
lately tell me Matt Rule knows a bleepload about football,
and there are a lot of folks who learned a
lot about football from him. But he is the architect
of his own demise in so many ways. He can't

(14:44):
get out of his own way. He thinks he knows everything.
He got to the NFL and was doing things not
just unorthodox, but things that didn't make sense, right like that,
you heard the reaction. You're in the middle of the season.
Christian McCaffrey just got back from injury, and Matt Rule's
grand plan is let's run live goal line in a
midweek practice during the season.

Speaker 6 (15:00):
Nobody's doing that.

Speaker 4 (15:01):
I wonder he got hurt in a Chiefs gaming. Nobody's
doing that.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
So, I mean, that's why we reacted the way that
we did when we saw the podcast news last week
or earlier this week's week last week. Yeah, where it's
like he actually knows a lot of foot He's a
smart guy when it comes to football, but everything else,
I don't know, man like it just he's one of
those guys that it seems maybe he figures it out
at some point if he stays in his lane and

(15:25):
just teaches football. But he does so many wild things
that folks look at him like, what are you insane?
And you hear so many of these stories coming out
the longer he's been gone about Matt.

Speaker 4 (15:34):
Rule, and they're starting to trickle out more and more
at a more rapid way.

Speaker 6 (15:37):
Yeah, Yeah, it's pretty crazy.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
That's what did you say the best audio in the
world of sports when we return. Well, we talked to
one ad earlier, Doug Gillen, App State ad stop buy.
Now it's Mike Hill's turn. They just had a big
event over on campus earlier. Today they are expanding Jerry
Richardson Stadium. They of course open up with app State
on Friday, and they got Bill Belichick and Carolina coming
to town in week two, oh in a new head coach,

(15:59):
Tim Out coming down from Ohio. We'll talk to ad
Mike Hill next. Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn
Z Busy, busy day on the show, Roman Harper sec

(16:28):
network and list former Clemson I don't know why I
said that former Alabama Crimson Tide, not Clemson, Alabama Crimson Tide,
New Orleans Saints Hall of Famer, and of course Carolina
Panthers safety. He's back at five o'clock. Just ain't a
new deal with ESPN. Our buddy, Roman Harper scheduled to
be back at five o'clock. We got to get back
to the Panthers. News of the day. Adam Thielen has
been traded to Minnesota. The roster formation are the roster

(16:52):
itself continuing to take shape. The practice squad has been assembled. Still,
Hunter Renfro questions out there, although I think we're getting
our answer at least for now, so we'll get back
to it. We chatted with Doug Gillen, the athletics director
at app State, back in the three o'clock hour, and
right now we welcome back and welcome in friend of
the show, Mike Hill, athletics director Charlotte forty nine ers.
They are the other half of the Duke's Mayo Bowl

(17:14):
coming up Duke's Mayo Classic Rather on Friday at Bank
of America Stadium. Cannot wait for this, and I hear
that there's going to be a lot of fans in attendance.
Mike Hill back with us here on a Wednesday. Mike,
it's great to have you back. It's been a while.
How you been.

Speaker 7 (17:27):
I've been doing great.

Speaker 11 (17:27):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 7 (17:28):
We're excited.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
I bet I'm pretty pumped about it myself. I'll ask
you the same question I asked Doug. I mean, it's
right in your backyard. Obviously it's a big opportunity, but overall,
what does it mean for your program and your athletics
department to take part in the Duke's Mayo Classic.

Speaker 7 (17:43):
Well, it's really special because it's our first time having
an opportunity to play, you know, at Bank of America Stadium,
you know, against a rival who has a fantastic football history.
We've got a ton of respect for Rapp State and
the top they've done in the history they have, and
if you look at the quality of teams that have
played in this game over of course these many years.

(18:06):
How you know, Charlotte Sports has got a fantastic job
of putting together some big time matchups and it just elevates,
you know, our profile, and it gives us a chance
to in our own city, you know, and at our
at our pro team stadium, to stand up and be noticed.
So we're we're really looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Well, and I got to point out too, we aired
the Coaches Show back on Monday. We'll have the broadcast
of the game here on wfn Z. This will be
a first for us. And while I have very little
to do with it in the grand scheme of things,
I have been watching and observing in the in the
background as all of this comes together this week. Welcome
to the wfn Z airwaves.

Speaker 7 (18:39):
Mike.

Speaker 6 (18:39):
It's great to have you.

Speaker 7 (18:41):
Well, we could not be more fired up about it.
It's just a it's a great, great chance for us
to be partners with you guys, and we're looking forward
to having you know, our game broadcasts, our coaches shows,
and uh, it's a fantastic outlet you guys do often
work and we're really pumped about it.

Speaker 6 (18:57):
All right.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
So one of the guys over there that you know
well sent us, he's also a regular listener, was sending
me pictures earlier today of the groundbreaking and the celebration
of the coming expansion. I've seen the pictures of Jerry
richardson stadium expansion coming in twenty twenty seven. Looks phenomenal,
Like what all went into this and how you're going
to get it done?

Speaker 6 (19:16):
What should we expect it all to look like?

Speaker 11 (19:19):
Well, you know, it has been you know, years in
the making.

Speaker 7 (19:22):
Now it's a huge project. It's a seventy million dollars project.
It's taking you know, some time to not only raise
the money, but obviously designed it and pull pull our
plans together and now here we go. We broke around
a day officially, you know, we'll work through the next
two football seasons. Is a part of the project to
complete it, and it'll be done by the spring of

(19:43):
twenty seven, so you know it'll be a part in
our dust scenario here for the next two seasons. But
it's a you know, those are all you know, minor
inconveniences for the sake of progress and to be able
to add seating capacity to our facilities of course, because
you know we a capacity or over capacity for five
of our six home games last year. And you know,

(20:05):
with the kind of games that we have moving forward
in the league we play in the rivalry games, we've
got you know, app State every year for the next
six years. We've got ECU in our league. Now you know,
you're playing teams like Navy and Army and Memphis and
and of course some great non conference games too in Ole,
miss and others. So you know, we need no seats
and we need premium seats because it generates revenue that

(20:26):
we can reinvest into the football program, which is really
key at this point. And it's also a chance for
us year round to use the building to feed our
football team in our student athletes where they don't currently
have a training table setup, and so this will give
us a chance to invest in that as well. So
it's a it's a fantastic project. It's a really happy

(20:46):
day for our program to break ground and to celebrate
what's coming.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Mike kil Athletics director Charlotte forty nine ers they've got
app state in the Duke's Mayo Classic on Friday. You
can hear it right here on WFNZ, and of course
you can head up to the bank and watch you
which I'm sure they prefer. Duke's Mayo Classic coming up
on Friday, since you mentioned it, and you know the
fundraising effort, you know everything about college athletics, it seems
these days, is you know, raising money. How much money

(21:10):
can you find? How much money can can you find
for you know, to get donated things like that and
not to dredge up old history. But it wasn't that
long ago that Biff Pogi was on this show talking
about money and needing money, and you know that's your
job as the athletics director is to go out there
and find it and fund everything. Still with a young
program embarking on big endeavors like this, how what's your
job like? Like how difficult is it to get the

(21:32):
fan base fired up and to get them donating money
because that fuels everything in college athletics.

Speaker 11 (21:38):
Well it does.

Speaker 7 (21:39):
But I think we've seen great growth in our donor
base over the last few years. I mean, we we
have nearly doubled our donor base, and of course the
last five years, you know, we had a huge jump
in our fundraising just from last year to this year.
I think he was almost sixty seven percent. So you know,
we've got we've got signs of progress from the fundraising piece.
But it's not all just fundraising either. It's also finding

(22:02):
ways to generate revenue or increase revenue from existing streams
and finding new ones. And we're excited about the launch
of Charlotte forty nine Ers Ventures, which is a new
in house the agency that we've launched and that is
already seeing results in terms of corporate partnerships and the
new nil opportunities for our student athletes, and also being
a part of the league gets super progressive.

Speaker 11 (22:23):
To move to the American was a big one for us.
You know, we've moved there two years ago. We've won more.

Speaker 7 (22:29):
Conference championships in this league than anybody in the league.

Speaker 11 (22:32):
Eight over the last two years, which is not bad.

Speaker 7 (22:34):
For the new kids on the block.

Speaker 11 (22:36):
And we just know that this thing is getting ready
to explode when football takes off under coach Alvin, and
we know that's going to happen, and excited about the future.
So fundraising has always been an important part of these jobs.
It's more important than ever now. But it's really in general,
it's just finding ways to increase revenue streams and that includes,

(22:57):
you know, fundraising, and includes multimedia rights, includes conference revenues
and other.

Speaker 7 (23:02):
Streams that we seek to develop. So it's exciting.

Speaker 11 (23:05):
It's not easy, but you know what, we love what
we do. We're passionate about it.

Speaker 7 (23:09):
And there's an incredible momentum behind our university right now
with its growth and around our whole program, and so
it just feels good.

Speaker 11 (23:18):
Timing is everything. I told coach Albin that today. I said, man,
you knew what you were doing. You took this job
at the right time. Here we are debuting a new building.

Speaker 8 (23:26):
Man.

Speaker 11 (23:26):
He agreed with that, you know, he laughed, he said,
you're right, you know.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
So it's exciting, it is, and it's funny you mentioned that.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
I want to ask about tim but I was just
thinking back to I think it was December thirteenth of
last year, I was in DC and I was talking
to Tim Pernetti, your commissioner and the American I actually
accidentally called at the AAC and he quickly corrected me,
and I get it, I understand. But Tim's a great guy,
I mean, great leadership. I really enjoyed talking to him,
and I talked to him that day about the hiring

(23:54):
of Tim Alban and I'm pretty sure I'm right about that.
But when you hired him, when the announcement came down,
my first thought was, Wow, that's a great for Charlotte.
He's been on the job for months. Now, what have
you learned? Is the guy you hired back in December?
The guy you expected to get?

Speaker 9 (24:08):
Man?

Speaker 7 (24:08):
Is he ever?

Speaker 11 (24:09):
And then some? I mean it has been.

Speaker 7 (24:11):
I mean it's you.

Speaker 11 (24:13):
Don't want to gush too much. It doesn't sound.

Speaker 7 (24:15):
Real, but he's been a dream to work with.

Speaker 11 (24:18):
He's an absolute pro and somebody who you can tell
like he's got every.

Speaker 7 (24:24):
Part of his operation under control.

Speaker 11 (24:26):
He's been there, done it. You know, he's had success at.

Speaker 7 (24:29):
This level, at the FBS level.

Speaker 11 (24:31):
You know he's repeated that success. He's done it in
the transfer Portal era. He's won a national championship at
the NAI level as a head coach. You know, he's
just he's he's the real deal, you know, and just
a he's a great human too. I mean, just just
a fantastic, authentic person who has really connected well, I
think with our fan base. I think he's a fantastic

(24:53):
fit for our university and for our program. And so, uh,
I listen, we are overjoyed. We were overjoyed December when
he committed to come here, and that enthusiasm has only
grown based on what we've seen so far.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
When was the first conversation between you two regarding Hey, Tim,
just so you know your first home game is going
to be against Bill Belichick.

Speaker 11 (25:18):
Well, you know, it's funny because one of the things
he asked me when we were talking about the opportunity
and the offer, was you know what our scheduling philosophy was.

Speaker 7 (25:28):
Going to be.

Speaker 11 (25:29):
And you know where he came from at Ohio, you
and they've done a great job there.

Speaker 7 (25:34):
Obviously over the years, they've wont a lot, but he
was having to play sometimes three Power four opponents.

Speaker 11 (25:40):
In a season, and you know, we're playing too this year,
and I told him our commitment would be not to
play any more than two, but if at least one
of those could be a home and home like the
one we had with North Carolina, that we wanted to
do that, and he loved that and thought that was
a great approach. And so you know, when you know,
just a few days or weeks later, the new news
came out that that guitar Heels had hired you know,

(26:03):
Bill Pelicheck. You know, the interest level in that game
ramped up big time, you know, And so but I
know this, you know, what what coach would say is
when we respect all opponents, but here none and I
love his philosophy on that. And so you know, we'll
be ready to go this Friday for app and you
know we'll turn around a week later and host you know,
the Fellows in Carolina Blue, and that's gonna.

Speaker 7 (26:23):
Be a special day in our campus.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
I'm gonna have to hit you up for a press
credential that day. I got to make sure I get
in for that one. Now, we got Mike Kill, Mike
Kill the ad and Charlotte he's with us on the
hotline here before we let you go. I mean, just
any thoughts on on Friday, what you know in terms
of getting fans out there. Anybody I got to listeners
by the way, still asking are their tickets left?

Speaker 6 (26:44):
Where can we get them?

Speaker 2 (26:45):
So let's direct people to where they need to go
to get them in the building on Friday to watch
this game.

Speaker 7 (26:51):
Yeah, absolutely, there there are tickets available now. You know,
each school received an allotment of seats and then Charlotte Sports.

Speaker 11 (26:58):
Who organizes this game, and you know, they sell the
ballance of the seats, and you know, we have essentially
burned through most of our tickets right that we were allotted.
But there are seats available for this game. So people
can go. Fans can go to our website Charlotte Charlotte
forty nine ers dot com and be directed to purchase
tickets for the game, and we encourage them to do it. Listen,

(27:20):
we have more alums in this city than any other school.
We have one hundred thousand alums and live and work
in the Charlotte metro area.

Speaker 7 (27:29):
The second closest.

Speaker 11 (27:30):
School in this in period with alums is Chapel Hill
and they have about twenty two thousand. So this talent
is full of people who wear green, you know, and
so we need them.

Speaker 7 (27:41):
To come out.

Speaker 11 (27:42):
We need them to support this football team and enjoy,
you know, the start to a Labor Day weekend in.

Speaker 7 (27:47):
A Marquee matchup against Arrival, who we have a.

Speaker 11 (27:50):
Ton of respect for and can't wait to get after.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Well, Mike, I can't wait for the season to start.

Speaker 6 (27:54):
I really do.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
I love the hire you've made. Clearly the program has momentum.
The expansion plans look phenomenal and again, and welcome to
the wfn Z airwaves. I hope we get to talk
a lot throughout the season now.

Speaker 11 (28:05):
I look forward to that. Thanks so much for having
me today, and let's get a big job on Friday.

Speaker 7 (28:09):
Go Niner.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
There you go, Mike Hill, Athletics Director, Charlotte forty nine
ers with us on the hot line here on a Wednesday,
two days out from the Duke's Mayo Classic. App State
and Charlotte. That number right there, one hundred thousand alumni
in the Charlotte area. It's not shocking, but it does
put into perspective that, you know, hey, you got a
seventy two thousand seat stadium over here, y'all should probably
fill that thing up.

Speaker 6 (28:29):
Like between you and app.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
State fans who travel well and also are well represented
in the Charlotte area. The bank should I mean, y'all
got to put fifty thousand in there.

Speaker 4 (28:38):
Well, yeah, I was gonna say fifty thousand I think
is a reasonable goal. The one downside is it's on
a Friday, so that means you're having to compete against
high school.

Speaker 3 (28:45):
Football in this area. But I mean with the.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
Intrigue within this fan base, I think especially for Charlotte
because of Tim Albyn's past credentials, and then you've got
app State and they've been waiting for football season to
start for months now. That's their main that's always been
their baby. At the University in Boone, I think you're
gonna get a very good crowd. Remember when ECU took
on napp here in the Duke's Mayo Classic the same
weekend at Georgia and Clemson played. I mean, it wasn't

(29:12):
sold out, but it was a damn good crowd out there.
So I'm expecting the same thing this weekend.

Speaker 2 (29:18):
WHOA, we got some big breaking news on the Panthers
front health related. Ikey Aquanu apparently had his appendix removed,
and the phrase that I'm seeing is that there is
some hope he can play. In the opener This is
according to Darren Gant, I'm now seeing Vashti I heard

(29:38):
from Carolina Blitz. Apparently less than ten minutes ago, Dave
Canalis told the assembled media that Ikey Aquanu had his
appendix removed on Sunday night. Is day to day, but
Darren Gant says, quote some hope he can play the
opener end quote, Yeah, appendicitis immediate surgery. Alex Zettlo is

(30:02):
saying he's week to week and in jeopardy of missing
week one. Wow, that's quite the turn of events for
the Carolina Panthers. All right, let's uh, let's check the
news and we'll get right back on top of that.

Speaker 6 (30:16):
What you got, smokey, let's.

Speaker 3 (30:17):
Go all right.

Speaker 4 (30:19):
Well, keeping things with the Carolina Panthers and Dave Canalis's
press conference, he says that the Panthers have been in
constant contact with Hunter Renfro since yesterday. He said that
he saw peaks and dips in his performance here in
the summer, and Renfro said he has to think about
what he wants to do.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
Okay, there's a lot coming in right now. I what
would you say the odds are that Hunter Renfro plays
this season here or anywhere. Just guess I don't know
based on what we know at this point. Sounds about right.

(30:56):
I just I don't know something changed, because we've got
a lot of people. I understand it on the text
line saying, how does a guy whose teammates deem him
unguardable not at least end up on the practice squad?
And sometimes there is a wide gap between what said
and what's truly believed, right, and this could be one
of those instances. But they were all so complimentary of

(31:18):
his play, his sharp route running, all that stuff. I
just wonder, like, does he make his way back at
any point? Is he willing to take a practice squad
spot at this stage in his career? Again, he made
it clear to us he doesn't have to play football anymore.
He doesn't make he doesn't need to make the money,
He doesn't need to play football ever. Again, is he

(31:40):
willing to do the practice squad thing?

Speaker 6 (31:41):
Here?

Speaker 2 (31:42):
Does does somebody else? Does someone else offer him a
fifty three man roster spot?

Speaker 6 (31:47):
We don't know yet?

Speaker 4 (31:48):
All right?

Speaker 6 (31:48):
What else you got is that it.

Speaker 4 (31:49):
I actually do have some good news. Nick Skorton has
been clear to practice.

Speaker 2 (31:53):
All right, Well, that's good news. If you're just tuning
in Ikyakwanu. We just found out minutes ago had a
pendicitis and had his appendix removed on Sunday night is
considered week to week. According to Alex Zettlo Darren Gant
using the phrase quote some hope he can play in
the opener end quote doesn't sound great, We'll talk about it.

(32:15):

Speaker 5 (32:26):
Sety get on your feet.

Speaker 3 (32:31):
Hello, good protection th.

Speaker 5 (32:34):
For the Zion.

Speaker 6 (32:37):
Can you go to the buck?

Speaker 3 (32:38):
He's got good coming on. Sign back to bush running
into the area. It'll pass to.

Speaker 11 (32:45):
What oprates from pump bone counting out?

Speaker 2 (32:51):
Quote Hi for who balled out? Powers by High Performance
real Estate Advisors and the biggest dad gumballer of them all,
Thomas L.

Speaker 7 (33:06):
Rodd.

Speaker 2 (33:06):
Go to high Performance real Estate dot com and they'll
see you at the closing table.

Speaker 6 (33:10):
Smoke would you bring for the folks?

Speaker 4 (33:11):
I got to go with Ozzy Alby's last night with
three of five from the plate against the Marlins, including
two home runs in a blowout win, and an earlier
today against the Marlins, Ozzy Alby's had another good game,
two of five, including one home run five RBIs on today.
Ozzy Alby's has had a great last twenty four hours.

Speaker 6 (33:28):
That is true.

Speaker 2 (33:29):
I'll go Geo Lopez, who will be North Carolina's starting
quarterback Monday night against TCU when the tar Heels officially
kick off the Chapel Bill Era Belichick announcing that the
former South Alabama quarterback will be the starter, saying that
Lopez has made good strides in adapting to the UNC
playbook since joining the team following the spring transfer portal window.

(33:52):
If you don't recall last year at South Alabama, Lopez
completed sixty six percent of his throws for twenty five
hundred yards, eight teen touchdowns and five interceptions, along with
another four hundred and sixty three yards rushing and seven
rushing touchdowns. He quickly found a halmeut Chapel hill in
the portal, and he beat out veteran Max Johnson, who

(34:12):
was recovering from a broken leg suffered in Carolina's opener
at Minnesota last year. Goo Lopez bawling out Roman Harper
in ten minutes. Bad news for Panthers fans. Ikiakwanu apparently
had his appendix removed on Sunday night. Clearly is not
practiced all week since then not out there today, And

(34:33):
Dave Canalis, I've seen two reports because who I think
it was?

Speaker 6 (34:36):
Who was this? Is this?

Speaker 7 (34:37):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (34:38):
This Shakid shahked was Like Dave said that Ikey is
day to day, not week to week, and there's conflicting
reporting out there. I'm not in the press conference. I've
seen day to day. I've seen week to week. But
at this point it doesn't really matter that much. It
always matters a little bit. But we are four eleven
days out from the opener, all right. The man had
his appendix removed on Sunday, meaning he had his pen

(35:00):
Nick's removed two weeks from the opener.

Speaker 6 (35:03):
Do we think he's back in time for that? I
just don't.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
What's more likely that he's back or that Yosh Nigeman
or Brady Christensen are starting at left tackle in Jacksonville
that day, And apparently according to Joe Person, it would
be Yosh Nigeman as a starting left tackle, Yesh Yosh.
And remember Jacksonville has Josh heinz Allen and Treyvon Walker
on the edge.

Speaker 7 (35:25):
M H.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Mean, come on, man, the left tackle. I mean this
is yesterday. Atlanta loses Caleb McGarry their right tackle protecting
Michael Pennix's blindside because of course he's he's you know,
left handed, and now today here in Carolina, left tackle
down with appendicitis and an appendectomy. Now this one's not
critical as critical because Kayla McGarry's out for the year.
Ikey Kwanu should be back in a couple of weeks.

(35:50):
Andrew Norwell's agent said, usually a two week recovery. Yeah,
to get back up on your feet and go to
an office job, not go get the crap beat out
of you by fire breathers off the edge that smoke
just mentioned. So I mean, I I'm not optimistic he
plays in week one. Doctor and we have a doctor
texting in seven oh four numbers saying typically a four
to six week recovery. Doc here can't confirm that he

(36:12):
is who he says he is, But you know, I
don't expect him to play week one, not based on this.

Speaker 4 (36:19):
Yeah, I'm starting to think week three home openers when
he's probably gonna play.

Speaker 6 (36:22):
Josh Nisman was so bad in the preseason two.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
Oh yeah, he was not good.

Speaker 6 (36:30):
That's tough.

Speaker 3 (36:31):
What watch I do think, unfortunately, just would be.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
When Tristan Wurfs is already out in Tampa two. Let
me just losing tackles in this division. It's unbelievable. Anyway,
go ahead, I'm sorry, Atrician. Yeah, more attrition at tackle
and the season hasn't started yet.

Speaker 3 (36:43):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (36:45):
I honestly do feel like, hopefully this will be a
reminder to a lot of people that continue to crap
on Ikey that while Ike's not the best offensive tackle
of all time or anything like that, he is a
lot better than most And unfortunately, I think we might
have to learn the hard way, but we might see
how valuable he is in the next coming weeks. Because
yosh Nige been going against those ed dressers to start year.

(37:08):
Has me very concerned if that is the case.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
Oh man, we got Texters riding in here, a lot
of folks playing doctor Google. Greg is very concerned. Not Greg,
Greg is very concerned about Jacksonville's edges as he should be.
Mute Chicken says, and so it begins. I mean, there
are some Panthers fans having a really bad day today
between the feeling trade, which many of you did not

(37:32):
necessarily support this, and of course Hunter Renfro not making
the roster. We got some Panthers fans who are having
a very bad day and who are already starting to
freak out about this football team. And in this case,
I get it like you want. The thing is, we're
all talking about Bryce Young in the wide receiver room
and his team, Mac gonna have a teeder, McMillan gonna
have a big start to his career. Is Exl going

(37:53):
to bounce back? Is Jalen Kocher ready to step up?
Is Bryce and Tremaine going to be a stud and
another ud fa Jim? And it's like, hey, bro, they
studied to run the ball first and foremost, Chuba Hubbard
and Rico Dabdle got to run the football and not
hav An Ikey out there, and you need to be
able to go to Jacksonville and run the damn football.
And not having Ikey on the field sucks. And he's
not out officially yet he's not and maybe he plays,

(38:17):
but I just don't I don't see it, not two
weeks out, not this game.

Speaker 4 (38:23):
Not when your job requires you to hit somebody in
the chest for sixty plays and you're going nose to
nose with somebody in that it's no I mean.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
Even if your opponents, who, by the way, will know
about this, you know. And if I were an edge
rusher and this is the NFL, I mean, I'd be
going after his midsection. I'd be trying to punish him.
I'd be loading up on him to make his life miserable, right,
I mean, this is football, It's whatce you do. There's
no way two weeks out from a fresh you know, surgical.
And again, I'm not a doctor. I'm not a surgeon,

(38:51):
but it just kind of feels like a common sense
thing here.

Speaker 6 (38:54):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (38:56):
Could it be that with modern medicine, this isn't as
invasive and and lingering as we think. I don't know.
I've never performed an appendeck. To me, I'm a little
bit ignorant on the subject. Merry Christmas. George says, if
the procedure was laproscopic, the recovery is typically one to
three weeks.

Speaker 6 (39:12):
Well, I hope that guy's right. I hope that dude's right.

Speaker 4 (39:14):
Laproscopic, laproscopic, laproscopic.

Speaker 2 (39:18):
Good job. I can't believe we were chaining that. During
a show today, Bagel Guy told me to relax. He says, relax,
kPa how am I supposed to relax when they're going
to Jacksonville with those edges and I really want him
to win week one. And the starting left tackle who's
probably have an extension talks right now. He just had
has happen deck to me on Sunday. God, the Panthers
wear me out, man, And it's not their faults. Sometimes

(39:39):
this is nothing. Nobody did this. This is real life.
This is just real life stuff, and it stinks and
I hate it for Ricky. All right, Roman Harper, Well,
we got to get to more. By the way, if
you're just tuning in, we'll give you the deats on
the Adam Thielen trade. We'll talk about that with Roman
coming up. We also need to point out that as
of the start of this show, not a single player
that the Panthers cut yesterday has been picked up by anybody.

Speaker 6 (40:02):
And there was a.

Speaker 2 (40:03):
List about twenty deep of former Panthers who were cut
across the NFL yesterday. It should tell you everything about
the talent on this or lack of talent on this
roster the last year or two, and what they're having
to do to rebuild it, especially on the defensive side.
We'll talk about it all. We'll talk some college football too.

(40:24):
We got Roman Harper joining us on the other side.
