Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet. Today live platforms sports

in South End right here on South Boulevard.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
You can't miss it. We're easy to get to. This
place is it's become a hub of sports watching and congregating,
one of the coolest places in the Queen City. Shout
out to our guy Rock and Chet and all the
ownership here. They know how to throw a great party.
And we've got a Vegas style sports bar surrounding us
with every sport imaginable on TV, both live and replay
right now. But of course we've got live NFL action
(00:49):
coming up tonight, so we're talking all about it. KK
Short expected to join us momentarily, but first let me
sneak in a phone call real quick. US Marine Corps Dave,
I believe, wants to weigh in on the Panthers and
the Jazz on Sunday. Dave, what's going on, buddy?
Speaker 3 (01:02):
How are you?
Speaker 4 (01:03):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (01:03):
What's up?
Speaker 4 (01:03):
KB? And smoke Smoke. What I'm gonna say is not
a swipe at you, love your takes, love your takes
on NASCAR and football. For once, you said of money
ago brought something to my mind. For ten years now,
Panthers fans have got excited if we're playing a team
possibly more horrible than us, or a team whose best
player is out. And man, I'm ready to be excited
(01:27):
because we've got a competitive team that can go toe
to toe with anybody and have a chance to win.
But it just really seems like the last ten years.
Oh hey, so and So's out. Man, we might have
a chance. Oh man, we're playing a horrible team. We
got a chance, and I fell for it. Man. We
played the Browns at home opening. I put some money
on it.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
Now.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Man, we got manhandled. I don't want to hear. It
was pre season and we didn't play our starters through.
They came into our house and pushed us around.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
But when Smoke said.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
That, it just brought memories back of fans say and
oh yeah, so and So's out, man, we can get excited.
We got a chance.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Well, you know, it's funny you said that, Dave. I
appreciate the phone call. That's happened to me a lot
in the history of sports. It's also happened a lot
with the Panthers, and you're right. Every time you go
into a game facing an opponent that A you think
is worse than you, or B they have two or
three injuries, you're like, man, we gotta win this game.
They better not lose this game. You can't under these circumstance.
And then you do when it's heartbreaking, and it's even
(02:23):
more frustrating. So I get your point, Well, come back
to that. I also appreciate the FanDuel text line. Right now,
they're trying to name my son's baseball team. My son
is three, he's got his first baseball game in two weeks.
I've been named the head coach. I was told this morning,
here are your players. You are the head coach. This
is when your game is, this is where you're playing.
But you don't have a team name. And I'm like, well,
you mean, like, well, we don't name teams. You get
(02:44):
to pick your team name. I'm like, I get to
pick my team name, so that's up to us. The
text line is trying to name the team. Not shockingly, though,
Panthers long snapper JJ Jansen just texted me and said
Ghost Peppers, so he, of course, the owner of the
Ghost Peppers wants me to name the team the Ghost Pepper, right,
So yeah, I know I need some money for that.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
JJ.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
If there's some royalties coming my way, big dog, We'll
go with Ghost Peppers. Otherwise I might be going in
a different direction, all right. Speaking of Caro, a lot
of Panthers. We have a former Carolina Panther with us,
and he's also a Purdue boiler Maker. And I'm throwing
that out there for the handful of Purdue fans in
the audience because there are a couple. We got Kwan
Short with us. You know him is kk on site
here at Platform Sports. It's good to see you, brother.
(03:24):
How you been good? I mean great, man. I appreciate
you guys having me on well, thank you for making
the time. I know you're probably enjoying not playing football
these days and you know, watching it like the rest
of us. But what are you up to these days?
Speaker 3 (03:33):
My buddy? Feel bad? I'll tell you that, I'm honestly,
really man, just being a full of time dad man,
and just spending more of time than I lost with
the little one that she was growing up. She was
born in twenty thirteen, so that's when I got into
the lease. So it's just been a process. But now
it's just trying to make up that time and give
her all the love that I had going and now
and just being present more.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Oh that's awesome. So what is she like? Does she
have hobbies? Like my girls started ballet yesterdays. That's awesome,
very first LA class yesterday. I couldn't believe it. That's awesome. No,
no hobbies. Well, she's she's doing band right now.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Nice. So that's her. That was her thing going into
middle school. She's a musician. Yeah, so she's trying to
figure out what she want to do. And uh, that's her,
that's her laying I told him I'm gonna support every
where she can try to do.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
That's awesome. All right. Now, I'm assuming you're keeping up
with the team obviously. I know you're around.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
I think I've seen you out of a couple of
things as well. So you know, I've been covering training
camp as always. I've been at most practices. I think
this team is better, but NFL seasons always tend to
surprise us. What we think we know isn't always what
comes to fruition. Just give us your big picture thoughts
on what the Panthers are right now.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
I've seen them and and just analyzing just a little
bit that I've seen from the outside looking in, they
look more hungry. Yeah, they looking like they want to
be there. And you're just seeing like those guys connecting
on all different types of level. Was it on the field,
off the field, and and as a team to try
to build that that that tight knit. That's what those
guys need to do. And you see Bryce is making
(05:00):
throws and actually stepping up and doing what he needs
to do in the defense. Is looking good when I
went to as well. So I think they will be
a lot better than they was last year. And I
think they still trying to find out the identity.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Speaking of Bryce, just you've been through the NFL journey
of having to acclimate to the league, understand the speed
of it, how it works. You're with grown man, it's
a business, all that stuff. How would you like how
would you describe his first couple of years, the trials
and tribulations, Like if you're talking to regular fans who
were just watching it on TV, what do you tell
them about what you think he's been through these last
couple of years.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
It's been a lot Man. I mean you come with
a lot of expectation. Yeah, the first pick, you know,
to a team that hasn't been doing well, and what
fans look at is that that was the answer and
it's supposed to do what. You know, other quarterbacks that
got drafted done to different teams. But you've got to
understand that he was brought into a different situation. He
(05:53):
was brought into a different group of guys, and as
a young guy coming in, every day is a new day.
Every day is new that you're trying to figure it out.
So it's not only that his heartbreaking or not heartbreaking,
but only heart nervous and nervous. This guy trying to
meet everybody's expectations and just getting out of the line
of who you are. And I think that's where as
(06:15):
a first year player you kind of try to realize
it's like you're trying to please everybody, knowing that it's
not going to get done overnight. So I think that's
where his focus is now, is trying to take one
step at a time and trying to just build what
he can with this organization. And I think he's doing
a good job just leadership. This guy is doing everything
around the city as well. He's in the right steps.
(06:37):
He's in the right direction. I think once he figured
it out, it's it's going to be, you know, hell
to see you got play.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Former Carolina Panthers All Pro defensive tackle KK Shorter is
with us here as far as the defense goes, I
mean that was I'm not trying to be glibbed, like
you can't get want to be anywhere but up after
last year, right, I mean, it's just the truck. You're
the worst defense of the NFL. You can't get any
worse than that. But they they brought in six new bodies.
Derek Brown's back and healthy. That kind of feels like
an additional free agent coming back. We know what he's
(07:03):
all about. One thing that I've heard a lot of
I heard Brentson Butckner talk a lot about this when
he watched practice. He said they're noticeably bigger, and he
thinks they're gonna get a lot better push up front.
Turk Wharton is here now, obviously speaking of former Perdue
guys Nick Gorton coming in as a rookie, Prince Lewman,
Theellen's coming in. You brought in Pat Jones down to Minnesota. Again.
We'll wait till the rubber hits the road on Sunday,
(07:24):
But on paper, do you expect this group to be
significantly improved?
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Most definitely you got Drek coming back and that was
a big key of what they needed last year. And
just seeing him worked this offseason and grinding and stepping
up and being a better leader and knowing that he's
going into whatever year that he's going to. He got
the younger guys he's looking up to him, So I
think he's going to compliment the back half that we have.
(07:47):
And the most important thing is those guys have to
pay attention to details, not think too much on that field,
make decisive moves, and just get out of the quarterback.
At this point is where everybody's just saying like, oh,
we need to do this. Would do that. Those guys
have nothing to lose, and those guys got everything in
the gang. And you see, like I said, the mentality
that those defensive lines have right now, and I think
(08:08):
they I think they would be doing good.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Real good this year. What do you think terms because
of Nick? Right, Nick came out from Texas A and
then but obviously he was at Purdue. First played a
bit heavier at Purdue too. I think at two eighty
he's down to about two fifty two fifty five now.
But one thing that stuck out I think immediately to
everybody was just the relentless Patre. Oh my gosh. You
know that first preseason game. We saw it right away.
How big an impact can he have as a rookie.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
That's great, man. It just motivates everybody else around you.
I know Nick is not gonna stop, so I gotta
keep going. I gotta keep trying to get after the quarterback.
And just seeing him sprinting from one side of the
field to the other side. Man, it just gives the
panther nation and the defense hope to knowing that once
this guy outside outside of me, I don't have to
worry about him. I know he's going to do his job.
I just got to continue to do mine. So just
seeing that and and that's a big key for those
(08:52):
guys up behind us, you know, the cornerbacks and the
safeties and the linebackers. It's like, we see somebody like
that in front of you, just relentless motor. It just
makes say everybody. Man, just just motivate everybody to keep going.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
KK short live with us on set here at Platform
Sports in South End. You know, I don't know Ron
Rivera as well as you do. I didn't play for him,
but I've gotten to know him a little bit over
the years, and I got to talk to him again
here recently, and I've now gotten to know Dave Canalis
a little bit. One thing I know is they're different people,
that's for sure. You know, both Left Coast guys with
different kind of guys. Ron, I would say a bit
more throwback, old school hard nos let's say definitely throw back. Yeah,
(09:26):
Dave's a bit more new wave, right, that sort of thing.
But I don't know how much time you spent with him,
but I'm sure you've observed him.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
What do you think. I think his energy is great,
really great guy, encouraging the legends to come back, couraging
everybody who put a jersey on here to come back
and just be around a team. And you want coaches
like that just to have to embrace everybody. Like I said,
I played him a couple of years when he was
at Tampa, and the moment I met him, he was like,
(09:53):
how can I not know you have? He was a
force to it, you know, so you know those guys man,
just to see like the energy that he brings and
all smile and always has the utmost respect for everybody. Man,
it's this I would love to run thro a wall
or a guy coach like that.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Dan Morgan's the GM again. Dan was on recently he
was faced with a I think it's fair to say
a fairly difficult decision in trading Adam feeling a couple
of weeks ago. Our understanding and Dan told us directly
on the show, was that Minnesota called and he felt
compelled to tell Adam about it. When he told Adam
about it, Adam was adamant that he wanted to go
home to Minnesota. That's a player that a lot of
(10:26):
fans thought we'd be counting on going into this year.
Now he's gone. You got Hunter Renfro coming off the street.
He didn't play it all last year. And other than
him and David Moore, it's a bunch of first and
second year guys. I forget he was a danger. He
So what do you think of the room then, given
all those circumstances, I liked it.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
I like the receiver room. Okay, I like the receiver room,
but it all comes down to wanting to win. And
just because you got the names in the room, you
got to have the motivation, the motivation, demotor, and the
drive to push this team. So I mean, you can
have you know, all stars on a on a roster,
but if they're not gonna do what they need to
(11:03):
do or what they expected to do, then it doesn't count.
But not to extinct those guys, man, just seeing you know, preseason,
those guys running up the field and catching these balls. Uh,
it's I think it's I think it's a nice night.
Daran did a nice job in that room. I think.
I think overall in general, this whole offseason has been
has been good for the Pender.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
So, I mean, just you understand the physical nature of
the game better than anybody. I am. Just that I
have been a little concerned about Hunter just because he
hasn't played the top level, you know, just full speed
on a Sunday. Is that not something you really worry about?
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Nah, I think he'll knocked the dust off the shower
pass probably the first quarter of the game. You know.
That's but that's the mentality. Yeah, you come in this
league once, once you start playing, you can be you
can be injured tomorrow and game day you you full
go like that's the mentality that we have as athlete,
as a competitor to understand that whatever we got going
(11:56):
on outside of football or body wise, which hap enough
for the next guy in front on the side of us.
So I just think I think he'll ad just well,
love it all right, two things.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
I'll get you out here and get back to eat
some chicken wings because that's what I want to do.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
They smell good.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
So one of the one of the key things I
think they did this offseason was bring back the entire
offensive lit right depth included. It might be the most
important thing they did, honestly, But we now know that
Ikey just had an appen deck to me two weeks ago,
nearly and he's listed as doubtful for the opener on Sunday. Now, again,
the good news is you got yosh n I'm in back.
You got Brady Christensen back, so you have depth there.
But you don't have your starting left tackle top ten
(12:30):
draft pick. How big a concern is that for you
going into Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
That's tough. That's tough, and his lead the mentality is
the next man not right and you don't know when
your jersey number is going to be called. You got
to be ready. And I think they have a number
two or whatever guy they move over and put in
that spot is fit for the challenge. What we would
love to have you back, Yes, you know, but I
(12:56):
think we'll feel that spot. And they just got to
have the mentality that if the team is smart, they'll
try to you know, target that side, but they'll put
the right guy in this position.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
All right, last thing ten years ago, about this time,
right your Carolina.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
Panthers, fresh out of training.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Can we're taking off on a journey that nobody saw
coming fifteen and one, going to the Super Bowl. We
all know the story at this point, given what you
know better than anybody, and that was the experience of
that season. What that team meant to this city, How
it still talked about to this day. How important do
you think it is for the organization to honor that
team ten years removed from what happened?
Speaker 3 (13:33):
What do you think, Oh, that's such a big question.
I think that that year, what that team did with
something special. When everybody understand that it around the Carolina
is that's special and we can't take that for granted,
just because just because it hasn't happened in a long
(13:55):
time and just football period. You know, you go fifteen
and one and you realize that it's greater. You know,
the commotion and the intensity goes up soon as you
get the playoffs. And just seeing that those guys never waiting,
never doubt it, always came and worked without an expectation
(14:15):
to be the best. We just knew the work that day.
And just seeing I can name pretty much all those
guys on that team, just seeing the older guys come
in and just put their head down and work, work, work,
you know, Charles Johnson, all those guys, man, And I
think those guys earned the upmumpt respect to be to
be well recognized from that season, just because those guys
(14:38):
been in league probably eight to ten years before me
and was grinding that those grind years where the Panthers
was owing whatever. And those guys get to walk out
like that, man, I think they need to be well
deserved and well honored.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Well, my man was a second team All Pro Pro
Bowl selection that year in twenty fifteen, had himself a
heck of a year, and I know it's accurate to
call him if fan favorite here in Carolina. KK Short

here and hang out this weekend. Don't forget Nate Wimberley.
WBTV is coming up at five o'clock. He's back in studio.
We'll talk about all things Panthers, college football, and some
high school football with Nate Wimberley. Also, just talk to
a buddy of ours. I'm going to call him a
league source affiliated with the Charlotte Hornets. I'm not going
(16:54):
to name names here, but he's getting me kind of
excited for the start of Hornets season. I don't want
to get too far ahead of myself here, smoke, but
I've just been fed some intel about the Charlotte Hornets
and the culture building over there and some of the
newcomers and how they've been received and how they're mixing
it up with some of the vested veterans and the
guys who've been around for a couple of years. Like
(17:15):
I'm hearing good things about the Charlotte hornets. I know
we're not there yet, smoke, but have you thought much
about it?
Speaker 1 (17:21):
No?
Speaker 2 (17:21):
I don't want to get my hopes up. No, just
don't do that to me.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
No, all right? Fine?
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Do we have Marty is Marty with us?
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Love it. Marty Snyder, NBC Sports Turner, Amazon, NASCAR Studio host,
a claimed pit reporter, good friend of ours, and a
Friday conversation here on the show. Marty Snyder, Good Friday, buddy,
how are you?
Speaker 3 (17:38):
KB?
Speaker 6 (17:39):
What's haddening? Don't go around start talking about hornets yet.
I mean, come on, you get us excited about panthers,
getting us excited about the hornets too, I mean, come
on now, KB.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
It might be a fool's errand I admit that upfront,
but you know, I'm an optimistic guy by nature. So
we're here now, Marty, and I think you're a pretty
optimistic guy by nature.
Speaker 4 (17:59):
You know.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Week one, well, okay, week wanted Jacksonville Robert hits the
road this weekend, Marty, you got to give us a
final prediction of what you think is gonna happen. What's
going on?
Speaker 6 (18:08):
Good Lord, I don't know, kV. I mean, I'm still
like i'man Jaden's Hornets fan. I'm a jaded Panthers fan.
I'm afraid to afraid to hope. But now I feel
good about this weekend. I hopefully the the Panthers can
do what we think they can do, hopefully. You know,
I heard, you know with Wilson having the conversation day
(18:30):
you know about you know, Ken TETs show up and
be the player we all think he's gonna be and
then does he need to be great? And uh, I
just wanted to see something good happen. I just want
to see some positive moves on the offense and progression
on the offense, and if the defense can just hang
in there and be a mediacre defense, I think it
(18:50):
could be a great year. But I'm afraid to hope.
I mean, we left camp and everything was great, nobody
was hurting. Now of a sudden, everybodys hurt. So I'm
afraid that that's right there, proof enough that you can't
hope as a Panthers fan.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
Okay, fair enough. We'll see what happens on Sunday on
the football field. We'll go back to the track though.
For now, Sunday's pretty exciting there as the playoffs have begun.
And talked to Ryan McGee about it earlier this week,
and one of the first things he pointed out to
us was that guys just don't win back to back
years the Southern five hundred down in Darlington. But that's
what Chase Briscoe did last weekend. What did you think
(19:22):
of the performance and all that went down in a
pretty dominant performance by Briscoe.
Speaker 6 (19:28):
Yeah, I'll go even further. Guys don't win back to
back Southern five hundreds with different teams, and I think
that's really the big accomplishment for Chase Briscoe. And I
think listen, you know, we kind of talked about it
in our interview on the front stretch right after the
race and winners interview, and I just don't you know,
I think he's just now learning how to drive the
jug and racing car and what it expects out of him.
(19:50):
And James Small, as crew chief, has been spending months
trying to say they don't you can't drive it. Like
you used to drive. You got to drive it like this.
You got to trust the car a lot more. You
can change your driving style to be this, and you
don't have to, you know, you know, be one hundred
percent every lap and put yourself in peril every lap.
The car can handle this. So it's taken him a while.
(20:13):
So I agree with Chase Briscoe's assessment in that they're
just now sort of seeing and kind of really just
scraping the surface of what the potential of the nineteen
team can be. Can they get to Martin TRUEX Junior
Championship level. I'm not sure if they're quite there yet,
but I do think that he's certainly putting himself in
the conversation as one of the drivers who will be
(20:34):
a factor when he gets down to Phoenix later this year.
And by the way, Phoenix attrack, he's already won at
and a Phoenix Attrackee is very good at so sort
of underrated because a lot of people talk about Dean
Penske at Phoenix, a lot of people talk about Christopher
Bell and Denny Hamlin at Phoenix. Not a lot of
people bring up Chase Briscoe if he makes it there,
he'll be a threat to win the title.
Speaker 7 (20:53):
Marty, this smoke here and you were talking about Chase
Briskne how big the last few months have been for him,
But like it feels like this has been just as big,
if not bigger, for his crew chief, James Small, because
I remember over the last few years, even though the
nineteen team was competing for wins, something would get into
way and there were a lot of angry transactions on
the radio between he and Mark Drick Junior. I mean,
how big is it for James Small to have a
(21:15):
season like this after the last couple of years with MTJ.
Speaker 6 (21:19):
It's big, and James and I are really close friends,
and I'm very happy for him that he is seeing
this level of success because you got to realize he
lived in Colpern's shadow for a long time. Colpeern obviously
championship crew chief and was a tremendous leader of that team.
James was his engineer, and it took a while to
kind of make that transition from hey, I can make
(21:41):
the car great to being I can make the car
great and lead the team and call a great race.
That's very different. There's a lot of guys who can
do all the nuts and bolts to make the cargo
fast that they can't lead a race team. And it
took James a while to learn all of that. And yes,
in the middle of all the Martin truck and your stuff,
there was some frustration, and there were there were some
(22:03):
heated moments on the radio, which very well publicized on
national television and all the you know, talk shows and
all of that. But I think at the end of
the day, he's learned how to how to lead the team.
I think having Chase has actually helped him a little
bit smoked because he's had to really lead the driver
more than he's had to do in the past and
coach the driver more than he's had to in the past.
(22:25):
And James has welcome that. At first, he kind of,
you know, you know, just said do it like this,
and just do it like that. Now he's learned how
to lead him a little bit better, and I think
that's starting the show as well. But again, I think
we're just seeing the potential of that race team, just
a little bit of it. I don't know that they'll
be dominant like that in the rest of the playoffs,
but I do think that's what that team is capable
of doing well.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
He led three h nine of three sixty seven on Sunday,
Marty and you know these things better than I do.
But this week I've heard a lot more of the
revival of the next gen car criticism, griping about that
the way racing used to be at Darlington as opposed
to this. Obviously it's not a new topic, but it
does feel like we haven't discussed it this much in
a while. Like, what, you know, you talk to these
guys all the time, what's the current opinion on the
(23:08):
next gen car and the tinkering and what can be
done at places like Darlington.
Speaker 6 (23:12):
Well, I mean there's no question if you don't have
a second lane, you can't pass. And that's why you
saw in the spring at Darlington William Byron lead literally
every lap of Stage one and States two. You just
don't see that happen at Darlington, right, And that's why
you see Chase Frisco be so dominant. So yeah, I
think the criticism, or at least the talk is warranted.
(23:34):
They've got to figure out something at these these these
intermediate tracks, and Darlington certainly falls into that category of
where if you don't have a second lane. You got
to figure out a way to pass, and that can
be good, that can be bad. But it just gets
to the point where these guys get behind someone and
they're just stuck. I mean, look at Denny Hamlin. I
would argue Denny Hamlin had one of the top three
(23:56):
cars in the race of Darlington last Sunday night. He
has a bad pit stop, he goes back to twenty eight.
It takes him the entire race to get back up
to seventh and that's as far as he could get.
And I think that just shows you that a good
car it matters. But really qualifying track position that's what matters.
(24:17):
Pit stops matter. That's why to me, KB we're seeing
all these mistakes on Pitt Road because teams know the
best way to pass teams pass another car is in
the pits. You have to have a good pit stop,
you have to have a quick pit stop. That's how
you pass people these days, and that's why you see
so many mistakes and why it ramps up in the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (24:36):
Now, Marty, speaking of the playoffs, the race got off
to a chaotic start, not even half that through. Josh
Berry wanted a playoff drivers wreck coming off of turn
two and that really ended his day. Alex Bowman got
caught up in that he never really recovered. But it
was a rough day for Hendrick Motorsports outside of William
Byron and Kyle Larson, because Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman
(24:56):
both had pretty bad days. Bowman's well below the cut line,
but Chase Lott had his gap that he had heading
into the playoffs has gone. I mean, what's your concern
level for both Bowman and Elliott for the remainder of
around to sixteen.
Speaker 6 (25:09):
Well, I'm concerned smoke for Hendrick Motorsports period going into
this weekend because they all kind of had Saint Louis
Circles as the track they were the most worried about
in the playoffs, not just this round in the playoffs
because it's a big unknown. You know, we talked about
all these you know tracks where all this chaos comes.
I think Saint Louis is the biggest unknown of the
playoffs because there's ever been a playoff race at that track.
(25:32):
It's you know, there have only been three Cup races
period on that track, and Hendrick has not been spectacular
at any of those three races and if they have
a weakness, and unfortunately this fall is the category of
Phoenix as well. It's these flat one mile Ish race tracks,
which that's Saint Louis, that's New Hampshire. In the next
round it is Phoenix, which is the championship race. I mean,
(25:53):
so there there are certainly pitfalls for Hendrick Motorsports along
the way to be able to get to Phoenix and
have a shot to win the Chanceampionship. But this weekend
you mentioned Alex Bowman is below the cut line. Chase
Elliott's just nine above the cut line. He doesn't have
a lot of breathing rooms. And if you look at
lately at Bristol that it hasn't been a phenomenal racetrack
for Hendrick. Other than Kyle Larson, who's been dominant at Bristol,
(26:16):
that has not been a great racetrack. And that's next weekend,
the night race of Bristol to close out the first
round of the playoffs. So I think Hendrick Motorsports desperately
needs a good weekend this weekend. I know they've been
working really hard. They feel like they made some progress
at Richmond in terms of setup and things that they learned,
which does apply to Saint Louis. So we'll see what
happens on Sunday on USA. But I really think this
(26:40):
is going to be a massive challenge for Hampton Motorsports
on Sunday, Marty.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
I'll let you go on this. I have just received
correspondence from a man who goes by the name Hurricane
Carl on my fandom text line. He claims that you
and him were fraternity brothers at Charlotte and he would
like to know your thoughts on their chances against Carolina
and Bill Belichick this weekend.
Speaker 6 (27:01):
Oh lord, uh good lord, Bill belichick'st cushion in Chapel
Hill at I thought that would be over by now.
Now I'm kidding. Unfortunately, you know, and I don't know Carl,
and we could have been turning brothers. But but I
will say I don't think I don't think the Niners
have much of a chance Belichick off of a Uh,
first of all, is a Belichick and to start the
(27:22):
right quarterback, that's the question. That's the other question.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
I got right.
Speaker 6 (27:24):
Geo doesn't need to be the quarterback, but that's another story.
But uh, I think I think Belichick is not gonna
standfile what happened last week, I would think, and I
think they're gonna come into uh, into Charlotte and uh
and lay it down this weekend. I think. I don't know.
I mean, I thought the Niners were in that game
for a little while, and they just kept getting worse
(27:45):
and worse and worse last week. So I hate I
missed that one in Charlotte, But I just don't think
the Niners are going to be strong enough to be
able to beat Carolina.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
What do you think, ab I yeah, I mean, listen,
I'm not picking not after what I saw from the
quarterback spot with Charlotte last week. If if they had
gotten better quarterback play, I think you could safely, you know,
get a little bit irrationally confident and think they've got
a chance here. But after what I saw from Connor
Harrel last week, no matter how bad Carolina was on
Monday Night, I'm hard pressed to think that Charlotte's going
(28:16):
to find a way to do that. I do, I mean,
but to your point a second ago, the Belichick thing
was so ugly on Monday Night, Marty, it has forced
everybody to recalibrate. Vegas dropped their win total from seven
and a half to five and a half. You know,
I don't think the talent level is all that great
out there. It does make you wonder immediately just where
this Belichick thing is gonna end up going.
Speaker 6 (28:36):
I just don't get it. I mean the you know,
the flip chart with nobody listed on it. I mean,
come on, man, I mean, what are you doing kicking
kicking kick in New England Patriots at it? I mean,
come on, man, just like a guy, just be normal,
you know.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
Well, you know he's Keith.
Speaker 6 (28:54):
Newmark, my buddy that is going to be the ad
there soon and left Ralph Spinway, Kevowski racing the go
up there and he's back to chap Hill and he
loves it. But if what a mess he's walked into it?
Speaker 2 (29:04):
All this well, my gut tells me he's going to
get a chance to hire his own football coach and
then not too distant keep but we we shall see,
We shall see. Marty, Thank you, brothers. Always enjoy Saint Louis.
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 6 (29:15):
Sounds good, You got things?
Speaker 3 (29:16):
They go.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Marty Snyder with us on the Hotline each and every Friday,
NBC Sports Turner, Amazon Studio host and NASCAR pit reporter.
He's everywhere every weekend. We appreciate his time. Seven oh
four five, seven ninety six to ten. Hit us up
on the FanDuel text line Monday headlines today, first edition
of the Panthers season on a Friday. Predicting the Monday headlines.
What are you expecting that we're talking about the headline
(29:39):
of Joe Person's story in the Athletic, Mike Kay's game
story over at the Observer. What are the headlines on Monday?
After the Panthers do whatever they do in Jacksonville on Sunday,
Michigan Vic. Just hit me up on the FanDuel text
line to say Michigan Vick's Panther path to victory in Jyville.
Running backs get thirty plus total touches with two touchdowns
(30:01):
and one fumble bryce two successful scrambles. Overall, he's eighteen
of twenty eight with a touchdown, two sacks, three drops
by receivers and no turnovers. Defense allows only one chunk
play forty plus yards result. Carolina twenty four, Jacksonville twenty Well, listen,
(30:21):
we'd all take that. The no turnovers part was music
to my ears, especially at the quarterback position. But if
the defense allows just one chunk play, especially.
Speaker 7 (30:31):
With Brian Thomas Junior and potentially Travis Hunter out there.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Yeah, and Tank Bigsby, because Tank Bixby, I tell.
Speaker 7 (30:37):
You he's I tell you what, man, he's into a
breakout here.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
I mean, if you're a running back named tank Man,
you gotta be pretty good. Well, that's the other thing.
That's what I want to find out Sunday, you know, immediately,
and of course you know it matters throughout the course
of the game. But like on Monday Sunday, pardon me,
does this Panthers run defense show up? Does the return
of Derek Brown spark a new era, you know? Or
the return of a statut Panthers run defense up the
(31:01):
middle defensively anchored by meet the Browns, you know him
and Bobby and uh you know, of course talking about
the newcomers, guys like Turk Wharton for instance, you know,
and A'shawn Robinson. Can't never forget about him? Can can
you get? Can you get a group out there on
Sunday that does not allow Jacksonville's offense to run the
ball up the middle? Make things tough on Trevor Lawrence
(31:23):
put them in a lot of third and long situations,
force them to play behind the sticks as often as possible.
If the run defense shows up on Sunday, even if
you don't end up with you know, four sacks on
the day, if you are effective against the run and
force Trevor Lawrence to beat you, that's still gonna be,
you know, the Panthers' most optimal route to winning the
game and playing effective football defensively. Seven oh four five,
(31:45):
seven oh ninety six ten. Hit us up with your
thoughts on the FanDuel text line. Right now we go
to smoke on the headlines.
Speaker 7 (31:53):
All right, latest update on Nicky as we know he
is doubtful heading into Sunday's game. Dave Canalis did say
he's been making a lot of really great strides and
still listen to them as day to day for the meantime.
So I think it sounds like it could be. If
I'm guessing based on Coach Beak, maybe it's like a
fifty to fifty shot he plays next week, but definitely
(32:13):
by the time Week three rolls around, he will beat
He's starting left tackle yet again. But Dave Canalis had
a little bit of gainsmanship for Liam coming into Jaguars
because he did not tip his hand to who's starting
get left tackle between Yosh Nigemen and Brady Christensen, even
though we all think it's gonna be Josh Nigemen.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
I mean I think we I don't know, and I
understand why you called it that, But is it really gamesmanship?
Does it impact what Jacksonville's doing at all?
Speaker 3 (32:38):
No?
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Not really. They got Jash Heinzell.
Speaker 7 (32:40):
They just basically say, it doesn't matter who it is,
you just go run for him.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Okay, yeah, I mean that's like again, you're right. Yeah.
The fact that he might be keeping it under his
hat five gamesmanship, but it's not gonna change the way
they operate. They're still asking Josh Josh hein Zalen to
pend his ears back and beat whoever's in front of
him on that side of a lot of scrub. All right,
we'll come back. We'll tell you who balled out. Nate
Wemberley in studio, coming up in eighteen minutes. Sports Radio
(33:05):
ninety two to seven w f n z B City,
Get on your feet below good protection, Chares of the.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
Air Zion, Can you got to the buck? He's got
a good running on sign by sign back to rush
running into the area. It'll pass toward Pete.
Speaker 7 (33:38):
Up rates from Pett.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
It's time for who balled out? Powered by high performance
real estate advisors and the biggest dead gum valler of mall,
Thomas L.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
Rod.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Go to high performance real estate don and they'll see
you at the closing table smoke which you bring for
the people.
Speaker 7 (34:03):
Well, it not the most Gaudi performance from Saquon Barkley,
but still an effective one. Nonetheless, eighteen carries for six
yards and a touchdown. Also four catches for twenty four
yards as well as most importantly, it was a twenty
four to twenty win four.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
The Birds. Yeah, yeah, it was recruiters acted up in me.
I was gonna play it for you, Kyle, but it
acted up on me. That's okay. I mean we're in
the same mindset here. I'm going Jalen Hurts two touchdowns,
one fifty two through the air. He was the best
player on the field last night for Philadelphia. That game
ended at twelve eighteen last night after a sixty five
(34:41):
minute lightning delay. Absolutely just ridiculous situation all the way
around the board. Not only did we have the spinning
incident between Dak and Jalen Carter and the rain delay.
But like polar opposite first halfs seven possessions, seven scores
in the first half, then a defensive struggle in the
second half. Philadelphia the defending champs. Even though they won,
(35:02):
it was sloppy they did. They've committed a lot of penalties.
How about the fact that A. J. Brown was basically
non existent in their offense last night, leading to rumors
today that he might be on the outs in Philadelphia
when it's all said and done. I mean, everything about
that opener last night was pretty wild. But Jalen Hurts
bawling out and tonight Kansas City and la in Brazil
(35:25):
and I just listen, smoke. You like to give me
a hard time because it's one of my favorite places
that I've ever been is Brazil. U Oh yeah, you told.
Speaker 7 (35:32):
I'll always remember that. Yeah, burning fire, eating outside or something.
You have no idea how good that the food in
Brazil is. Like you would love their diet in Brazil.
It's all meat and bread and cheese. Just think like
steak sandwiches all the time. Like their diet down in
Brazil is incredible. But I don't necessarily love these Brazil games.
I don't know, Like it doesn't really bother me.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
I guess that. It's not like Brazil doesn't offend me. Right,
they already play in London, they played in Germany, so
stick with me. But like, how much further around the
world are we going to send these guys to play?
And why are we taking divisional games away from domestic
fans like that? That does bother me.
Speaker 7 (36:10):
Now I'm trying to remember is this a home game
for the Chargers or the Chiefs. I believe it's the Chiefs.
I'm pretty sure I was gonna say because I feels
for the Chargers. I mean, it doesn't really matter to
him because they don't have a fan base because they
have I mean, they inviscerate did that fan base in
the moment they left San Diego?
Speaker 2 (36:24):
So they did? They did?
Speaker 7 (36:26):
I Yeah, it does suck, especially for a franchise that
has had as much go to away over the last
tek it as Kansas City. I don't think a lot
of people in case he are happy about that. My
problem is you start the season with this game, right,
That's my problem.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
Like, I don't think I think I was wrong about that.
I believe it is a Chargers home. Oh it doesn't matter, no, no,
I get but it's still a principle of it. It
doesn't matter. Your joke is on point. I get it.
You're one hundred percent right. You know, good luck finding
a real authentic Chargers fan anywhere outside of San Diego.
But the point being, you're taking divisional games away from fans,
and I don't know, Like I'm very pro fan, I'm
(37:02):
very defensive of, you know, the fan in general, because
fans are what fuel all sports. Without fans, they're just
a bunch of talented athletes playing in empty stadiums with
nobody watching. So fans fuel this sport and fans never
should never be forgotten about in these conversations. But be
it the Chargers or any other fan base, Like, isn't
it wrong to take the season opener and a division
(37:24):
game away from domestic fans, to send them overseas to
play in a place like Brazil? And to what end
for football? Global domination? Football imperialism? Like how important is
it to keep putting these games in, you know, these
far away locales, Like what's the what's the end goal
for the NFL? We're trying to have franchises on every
continent on the globe in the next fifteen to twenty years, Like,
(37:46):
what's the plan here?
Speaker 3 (37:46):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (37:48):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (37:48):
I don't think franchises are at least in the next
twenty to thirty years, are a legit conversation.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Well then what are we doing?
Speaker 7 (37:55):
I just think they won't world domination just to have
their say that they've had games here if I had
games in Germany.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
Like as a Panthers been like the Germany thing was cool.
As a matter of fact, we were here at platform
last year doing a live broadcast when they played the
Giants in Germany. Had a great time. We sold this
place out at like eight thirty in the morning on
a Sunday. It was awesome. But as a Panthers fan,
wouldn't you have rather have Like how pissed would you
be if you know they take a home game away
and put it halfway around the world. I get that
(38:22):
we all mostly watched them on TV now, but I
mean that's an opportunity that's been taken away from a
home fan base to go watch their team play at
their local stadium.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
I don't like that.
Speaker 7 (38:32):
And unlike the NBA and MLB, where you still have
in the NBA forty different home games you can go to,
or in the MLB's case, eighty. I mean it's seven
or eight, eight or nine that you have a year.
So it definitely stings a lot more. You know, it
definitely stucks. I mean that was one Carolina game that
was taken away from the fan base last year, went
against New York. Now, part of me didn't hate it
(38:53):
as much because it was going to be a Giant's
takeover if it was here, because the New York fan
base would have been here. But it still stinks. Nonetheless,
you know, it's a problem speaking of the team to
Carolina's playing this weekend. That's been a big problem with
the Jacks fan base over the last fifteen years because
they've essentially become the pseudo team for London. They've had
(39:16):
a game in London every single year for thirteen fourteen years. Yeah,
and it's become multiple over the years, to the point
where if you ask people which team you think would
become London if they don't have an expansion team, I
think ninety percent of the people would say, oh, it's Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Yeah, yeah, no, I agree, again, they can do what
they want. They're going to do what they want. But
I don't love this and I never really have. And
then let's see, I had to text for a second
ago RH pointing out that it happened last year with Germany.
He also says as a PSL owner, it doesn't bother
him that much and for some people, I'm sure it won't.
I never and sweet Cheek says that it's about TV
revenue and it pretty much always is. But for me,
(39:54):
just you know, on principle, I don't like fan bases
losing home games to places like San Polo, Brazil. Okay,
unless you're, you know, unless this is greasing the tracks
to put a franchise on every content on every continent,
unless you're, you know, laying the groundwork to put a
team there full time. I'm not saying you can never
do it, I guess, but opening week Division game, that
(40:15):
part I just don't like. And again, I understand we're
all taking these in on TV. For the most part,
they don't look that different on TV. You're only ever
reminded of it when they do the aerial shots of
outside the stadium and you know, showing the locals sound
Palo's not exactly Rio, so there won't be beat shots tonight.
Sound Palo's more like their version of New York City.
So you know, it's a cool place, but I don't know,
(40:36):
it's not my favorite. Seven oh four, five, seven oh
ninety six ten hit us up on the FanDuel text line.
Let's see rh saying, now, if I had to pay
for that game, it would piss me off. Well, yeah,
if you don't have to pay for it, it lessens
the blow. But I mean, football season is for a
short window of time, and as a season ticket holder,
I would think typically you'd want as many games in
your home stadium as possible. The bagel guy says, I
(40:57):
wish the NFL would take the whole preseason over. I
hate taking games from fans. European soccer doesn't play regular
season games here. They are all friendlies. Yeah, that's the
other thing. That's a great point.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
I mean, maybe one.
Speaker 7 (41:10):
I mean they did that, believe in the late nineties.
They had a couple of games in Mexico City between
the Patriots and the Cowboys. But if you're going overseas
to London, the problem you have is you're gonna have
to get that past the NFLPA right, and I think
it's gonna be pretty tall task, especially he said the
whole preseason, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
He said the whole preseason.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
I mean you can get away with one of those
games or two maybe, but like all three.
Speaker 7 (41:34):
I don't think the players are gonna want that because
that's essentially three weeks across the pond while you're getting
ready for a season.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
So now, I don't think that's gonna happen. All right,
here we go our number three coming up next. We're
live for Platform Sports and South End. Come on out
and see us. They're celebrating the return of the NFL
this weekend and we're throwing a party. They are here
through eight o'clock tonight throwing the party. Of course, this
establishment will be opened later than that, but it's a
great Vegas style sports book. The ceiling to window, wall
(42:01):
to floor, whatever the saying is Television's great people, awesome food.
This has truly become one of the hottest spots in Charlotte.
And they're giving away Panthers and Dolphins tickets for week
five tonight, So if you want to get out here
and try to win those, that's certainly worth your while.
We already chatted with KK Short, who's still in the house.
We're told the likes of Trey Boston and Charles Johnson
and other former Panthers are planning on making appearances here
(42:24):
tonight as well, So a full evening of fun on
a Friday here at Platform Sports is planned when we
come back. Nate Wemberley WBTV, longtime sports anchor, Sports director,
you know the dealt We talked some pro football. We
get his thoughts on the Panthers. We'll talk some college
ball and Nate Wimberley an institution on the high school
football scene. We'll get his thoughts on Week three. All
(42:46):
That's next. Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ
