Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Kyle Bailey Show, powered by Victory Chevy Charlotte,
where every month is Truck Month. Victory Chevy Charlotte, your
Silverado destination, our number two.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z, KB and
Smoke Big. Thanks to Nick Cattles of the Locked On
Patriots podcast for stopping by there. In the previous segment,
a little bit of an early look at Sunday's Week
four game at Foxborough and Russell and Vermont speaking of
New England texted in from New England and said, KB said,
you know your wide receiver suck up there, right? He said, well,
(00:46):
they don't suck that bad, but well, yeah, they kind
of suck. Well it kind of yeah, it sort of
went that way, but he knew it too. And I'm
not saying that they have nobody, but you know, I
would have thought with all the money they had to
spend that they might have done a little bit more
around may at the wide receiver position. But so far
that looks like it's really not the case.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
I agree, but I also think that they were really
looking as you said, as we said earlier, they have
so many needs and somebody fixes.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
They spent a lot of it.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
On free agency they did, spending twenty six million on
Milton Williams at the last second, thanks a lot. Definitely
didn't help things when it came to trying to find
weapons for Drake Mayde. Also didn't help that some of
the pass the Polk guy from the Washington the second
round pick from last year, has already gone basically gone.
So yeah, it doesn't help. I also think too that
(01:35):
a lot of people in Boston were more concerned about
the offensive line. Sure, and they didn't care if Will
Campbell is going to be like a just a very
good left tackle instead of a great left tackle. They
wanted that just because the line was so desperate and
so depleted of any talent last year.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
It was, And it doesn't help that. You know, they
did invest there and it's one week, but they gave
up five sacks against the Steelers on Sunday. Now again
you go watch the film. Not every one of those
was on the offensive line. But there has been problems.
There have been problems, and there's been pressure. So Drake's
been pretty good all things considered, and you just wonder
if Carolina's defense can get after him on Sunday, You know,
(02:12):
can they continue to win up front, and I don't
know if you're going to play this or not in
the next segment, but man, Brian Baldinger loves him some
Derek Brown upfront and has highlighted Derek Brown the last
couple of weeks. I think he's got his own segment now,
the Derek Brown Frisbee Toss of the Week where he's
just chucking offensive lineman, and he did it again this
past Sunday.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
So I did till Chris Lynch from.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
I mean, just again, I always say this, and I've
probably come off as a broken record. I don't mean to,
but you know, just sometimes, as you know, radio hosts, broadcasters, fans,
all of us, like you just feel convicted about a
player coming out of the draft, And for me, that
was Derek Brown in twenty twenty. And there were some
people nitpicking his athletic profile scores from the combine and
(02:54):
you know, telling me, I just don't know that he
can man handle dudes the way that he did at Auburn.
I'm like, why not. I think he can, and that's
what he does. It's just a different level of strength
from Derek Brown. Ashawn Robinson's playing well, we saw Nick scoorton.
I mean that guy faced a lot of double teams
on the interior on Sunday, but he was effective. Prince
Human Miellen put pressure on the quarterback. So they're gonna
(03:16):
have to go up there and replicate that against the
Patriots Sunday if they want to find a way to
win this game, because you know Drake, if you give
Drake time, Drake can hurt you.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
We've seen it.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
So the defense needs to go up there and get
after the quarterback and quite frankly, get home more than
they did against the Falcons. It's you know, you don't
want to nitpick thirty to nothing, but you know they didn't.
There was no sax in that game. They hit Pinnix,
they pressured him, they rattled him. But you want to
see those guys get home as often as possible, and
here's hoping they can do that Sunday in Foxboro. Let's
(03:47):
sneak in a phone call real quick. Donald wants to
weigh in on Bill Belichick. Donald, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Man?
Speaker 5 (03:53):
Man, I'm sorry still lead I heard Disturby. I got
busy man. Y'all was talking about him early in the segment,
but I begged different men. I think Bill is doing
a great job. And the reason why I say that
because I don't heard former NFL players who got traded
to New England in the past saying they became a
better football player because he taught in the game of
(04:13):
football and they've just been playing on rotality all their
all their life, so they became a better football player
being able to understand the game mentally opposed to physically.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Okay, but let me ask you this, when you say
you think he's doing a good job, what can you
point to for the people that say you're wrong, that
Bill's not doing a good job. What do you point
to to prove them wrong?
Speaker 6 (04:34):
To prove them wrong?
Speaker 5 (04:35):
I well, actually I haven't seen anything that I could
point my finger these four games. But I think the
guys not not listening man, not following instructions, and then
once they do that, you know they gonna they're gonna
try to be.
Speaker 6 (04:50):
A good team.
Speaker 5 (04:51):
It might not happen this season, but next season it will.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Okay, yeah, Donald, it could. I appreciate the phone call.
Like I said the other day, I'm I'm skeptical at
the point, I'm very skeptical. If they had hired John
some Raw from Tulane. I would absolutely accept the you
got to give it time argument. Okay, you hire John
some Rall from Tulane, he's coming in fresh slate. Okay,
you got to give it time. But you hire Bill
Belichick as this massive splash with a twenty million dollar
(05:16):
increase in nil budget, you're expecting to have an immediate
impact that the player's great talent is going to flock
to Chapel Hill to play for the supposed greatest coach
of all time. That clearly hasn't happened. It didn't happen.
But maybe even more concerning than that is the continued
issues or concerns about player evaluation, which traced back to
the end of his years in New England and to
(05:37):
Mike Lombardi. Who listen, Mike's really good on the Mike's
really good on radio and on TV talking football. But
I don't think that anyone, even Mike, would characterize his
executive career as being a great executive career, not as
a general manager or otherwise.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
His mouth can cast checks that he can't cast.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Sure, and so where's the talent? We heard all this
about seventy new players. You got all this money to spend,
why does your roster look the way that it does.
That's the big question. What can you point to that
they've done well so far? And I think Tar Heels
fans are rightfully asking that question. Seven four five, seven
ninety six to ten. Hit us up on the FanDuel
(06:18):
text line, English, Paul just said, Bill Belichick's doing a
great job. If you're a Duke Arncy State fan, listen,
it's just not been good. They've been completely outclassed by
the two Power four teams they've faced. By the two
Power four team they've just been completely outclassed. I think
outscored eighty two to twenty three. Here's Jonathan again on
(06:39):
the text line, got Kyle, you got to give Bill time?
Speaker 4 (06:42):
How much time?
Speaker 2 (06:43):
You can't tell me that y'all weren't expecting at least
an eight win season because he was the goat and
that players were going to follow and they couldn't.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
Wait to play for him.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
If this doesn't get any better, you don't think it
tamps down dramatically any appeal to go to Chapel Hill
to play for Bill Belichick. I think that's already happened
to an extent, and we'll continue to get worse. H
JT's up next, real quick, JT. What's going on?
Speaker 7 (07:04):
Hey, guys, how you doing good? I think, uh, this
roster is not real good. And we all know that
he got into portal late to start bringing in guys.
He pretty much grabbed what he could. I think he's
seen raw talent. Raw talent takes time. You know, Lopez
(07:26):
is a bus I will we'll say that he messed
up on that one. I don't think Max Johnson's answer,
but he might be for just to get us through
this year.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Yeah, for the hear and now maybe, but not the future.
Speaker 7 (07:37):
Correct, Yeah, give Bryce Baker a chance. I mean he's
a freshman athletic, you know. I mean, if you want
to screw it up this year, you might as well
let the freshman play. I don't know, I just see
that roster is not as good as and I think
Bill knew that. He's never came out and said, hey,
this roster is really talented. He never once said that.
Speaker 6 (07:59):
I don't even know.
Speaker 7 (08:00):
If his son is the answer for the defense coordinator.
And we all know Freddie Kitchens ain't. I mean, you know,
if you're everything that they're doing, I know, it's trying
to get them ready for the pro game. I just
don't think that this team, or this group of guys
(08:21):
they have in there are that type of players, you know,
I don't know. I just think we're keeping it too basic.
We don't have the athletes I love June. June's a
freaking monsters. Yes, in the backfield.
Speaker 6 (08:34):
If we can keep him.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
That's another thing.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
You know.
Speaker 7 (08:39):
Why they're super wise. Olivers about the only person we've
got that can beat anybody down the field. I like Ship,
but he is a possession secret than he is anything.
Speaker 6 (08:48):
So list.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
I appreciate the phone calling.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
I'm glad to hear you getting it all out right
there because there are a couple of guys that can play.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
But why aren't there more? Why why aren't there more?
Speaker 2 (08:58):
You could say got in late, But all I heard
from Carolina fans, many of them, was look at the
portal class. It's ranked top ten. He's got real talent
coming in. Hasn't come to fruition. You don't have a
ton of time. This is not a fifty one year
old coach who's been given a five year window to
build something. So you hope they can start to look
a lot better very soon. Let's go to smoke with
the best audio in sports.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
What did you say? You what? What did you say?
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Hold up?
Speaker 4 (09:21):
Wait a minute? Send may right. What I mean by
that is all right smoking? What you got? All right?
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Well, a lot of people have been taking their shots
at Bill Belichick over the last couple of days, especially
guys that want him to fail. I mean, we saw
John Gruden take a couple of shots at him on
the Barstool Show in FS one, but one that stood
out more was actually a guy who usually doesn't take
shots at coaches. That is Gene Chiswick, the former defensive
coordinator a U and C and of course, former National
(09:49):
Championship winning head coach at Auburn, who gave his faults
on the current situation in Chapel Hill.
Speaker 8 (09:55):
And I see a.
Speaker 9 (09:56):
Team Dan that is so Unbill belichick ish, if that
makes sense. They don't finish drives, they turn the ball over,
they can't tackle, they give up explosive plays. Those are
all the things that when he was the head coach
winning Super Bowls, those were the things you didn't see happen.
Speaker 8 (10:18):
And now they're coming really on a regular basis.
Speaker 9 (10:21):
So that would beg the question of this, is it
a coaching problem? Is it a roster problem? He had
seventy new guys coming there, that's what I read. Can't
verify that. That's what I read.
Speaker 8 (10:36):
You got a roster of seventy new dudes. So yes,
it does take.
Speaker 9 (10:40):
Time for things to come together, but not when you're
talking about blatant mistackles, blatant penalties, blatant explosive plays, Blayton
giving up sacks, all of the things that create negative
outcomes to games.
Speaker 8 (10:57):
That's what's happening. And then the whole.
Speaker 9 (11:00):
Girlfriend distraction with all the stuff going on. You know,
it's the optics just are what they are, right, Is
he really focused?
Speaker 8 (11:10):
Is he really focused like he was before? I don't
know the answer to it. I'm just telling you what
the optics look like.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Well, and again there's a reason that guys bring it up. Typically, well,
the acronym is wags, right, wives and girlfriends of coaches
and players. Wags are pretty much off limits, especially when
coaches are talking. Right, they don't reference family, wives, girlfriends,
that sort of thing. But almost nobody's unwilling, it seems,
at this point to point out that his you know,
co ed aged girlfriend on the sidelines is anything but
(11:37):
a distraction at this point. And I heard Greg Olsen
say the other day if they were four and oh,
nobody would care if she was even wearing a headset.
And he's right about that, But they're not four and oh.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
And to Jeane.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Chiswick's point from a hardly private and weird relationship to
banning Patriot scouts from his practices. Despite calling his program
the thirty third team and a pipeline to the pros,
this start has been peppered, littered with distractions and bad football,
something that he has hardly been associated with for most
of his coaching career. Now we'll see if they can
(12:08):
get back on track against Clemson this weekend. How do
you feel about that game? By the way, given where
both of these teams, do we think Carolina can go
win that game? Or is Clemson still got too much
for a team in North Carolina that just looks devoid
of talent?
Speaker 4 (12:19):
You did it again. It's next weekend, damn after the bye.
My bad? You know what I mean, my fault.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
I still think Clemson's gonna win. They got too much
high in talent to lose to this UNC team. Okay,
especially of how porous they've been tackling. All right, what
else you got? All right, moving to the good side
of the acc Miami. Oh my gosh, Miami's undefeated right now,
coming off of a win over Florida. And by the way,
today is Mario Christaball's birthday. Happy birthday to mister Christaball.
(12:47):
But he was asked on that Kevin Clark's podcast about
all the notions every single time Miami starts hot about
is Miami back?
Speaker 4 (12:54):
As do you back? And he had an interesting answer
to that notion.
Speaker 10 (12:58):
During that time, Miami was, oh damn good and also,
you know, irritate a lot of people with style of
play and whatnot.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
That it was it was like a special place in time.
Speaker 10 (13:08):
That is like ingrained that everybody's head and the memories
of some really dominant play with some arrogant moments, right
and some you know, I mean, but some really physical,
high level play of some there were characters, I mean,
those guys are.
Speaker 8 (13:23):
Iconic in so many ways.
Speaker 10 (13:24):
So I mean, it's nostalgia theater right in this country.
Now everybody wants back back back. Well, we don't want
to go back. We want to go forward, you know.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
We want to go.
Speaker 10 (13:33):
We want to take the principles and values of that
brand of football, but we want to take it forward.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
I mean this in all seriousness.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
What are the principles and values of that era of
Miami Hurricanes football that he's referencing. They were great? Don't
get me wrong. I'm not arguing that in any way,
shape or form. But it's a very wild and reckless
era of Kanes football in many ways. And I'm talking
more about the eighties and nineties less so the early
two thousands, although that still probably applies. He's not wrong
(14:03):
about the nostalgia thing, Like we are swimming in nostalgia everywhere.
Speaker 6 (14:06):
We look.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Who's on the sideline every single weekend, Michael or Yeah, yeah, yeah,
that guy is sweating for like twenty shirts before kickoff.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
Is it possible they're the best team in the country.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Look, I am not fully sold on Mario Chris of
ball until he gets a deep playoff run in him. Yeah,
but there, this does feel a little different this year
with this Miami team.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
It does, doesn't it.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Yeah, I'm just not I'm not trying to get sold
yet because I know how many times, how many people
have fallen into the abyss of falling for this Miami team.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
No, this is the team. This is the team.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
This one does feel a little different, though, I will
say I will agree with that.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
I will agree what else you got?
Speaker 5 (14:44):
All right?
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Well, we end things by going back here to Carolina
and Dave Canalis and going back to the Winds specifically
on Sunday and looking at the offense. Bryce Young was
under center a lot more and earlier this week on
Panford Talk, Dave Canals was asked about why they were
lining Bryce up mender center more compared to the first two.
Speaker 11 (15:03):
Weeks offensively, one change we noticed under center looking at
the notes seventeen percent the first two weeks, fifty five
percent in week three.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
What was the reason for that score?
Speaker 12 (15:17):
We're down twenty to three at the half for two weeks,
you know, But this is how we want to look.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
This is this is the balance that we talked about.
Speaker 12 (15:23):
You know, when when I picture and I envision our
team playing at our best, you know, we're playing good defense,
we're taking care of the ball. We can be under
center so we can be multiple, we can throw the
play action passes, and we can get into all the
variety of our run game. And then we can also
get into the gun, and we can run the ball
in the gun, and we can throw it there too.
We just want to be balanced when I'm talking about
(15:44):
first and second down. We had a couple of third
down runs this week too, but on first and second down,
we just we want to be able to have both
the screen game, the run game, the pass game. And
when you play a game like this where we're taking
care of the ball. Special teams is owning the field
position last week, it allows us to just play that
balanced type of football that we want to.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
First of all, love that A Niche brought that up,
and you'll hear from a Niche coming up in about
ten minutes. A Niche Shroff is coming up in the
next segment. But I was so happy to see that.
And he's right the score right that you go from
seventeen percent to fifty five percent. We all know why
you jump out to a seventeen to nothing lead after
the pick six. You're controlling the game at that point.
You want to run the football. There's a specific style
of football you want to play at that point. But
(16:27):
I loved it. I loved every second of it. I
told Mack and Colin and Willie in the press box.
When I saw that first toss sweep of the game
got I got excited. I want more toss sweeps out
of this offense. I love Bryce under center. I know
he's got to be in the gun. I know what
they want to do throwing the football. I get it.
But man, I'll take more Sundays like that all day long,
handing the football off left and right. Toss sweep. Oh god,
(16:49):
it was great. It was fantastic. All right, we'll talk
to a Niche Shroff, Voice of the Panthers when we
come back Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z
Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z KB and smoke
(17:10):
back with you here on a Wednesday, having a good time.
Roman Harper coming up at five o'clock. We'll talk a
lot of SEC football with him, plenty of news on
that front. We'll get his thoughts on the Panthers as well,
which is what we do right now with the voice
of the Carolina Panthers. Good friend of the show. You
can hear him all over the Carolina Panthers radio network.
A Niche Shroff is back with us for a Wednesday conversation.
(17:31):
A Niche how are you, buddy?
Speaker 4 (17:32):
How good? How good do things feel this week?
Speaker 5 (17:35):
Well?
Speaker 6 (17:35):
Things feel good. It's been a good week in panther Land.
And you kind of look at the schedule and you go,
mile my, it's already week four and you're basically at
the quarter pole of the season.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
It is wild how fast that goes. Every year we
acknowledge it, but it always seems to sneak up on us.
Just big picture. Obviously, home opener, big win. You thump
the Falcons thirty to nothing. There's nothing bad about that.
But what did you like the most? What was your
favorite part?
Speaker 6 (18:01):
I just felt happy for the guys on defense. They've
heard it from us, from you, from me, from the
fans for the last year plus about just what this
defense couldn't do. And I think it's one thing to
speak it into existence, right when people around the team
are telling you that, hey, the defense is better and
they have upgraded. But then to actually put that evidence
(18:24):
on film and to go out and shut out a
team like Atlanta. You can make the case, Kyle, if
you're starting a team from scratch, and I say, go
pick any running back in the league. When you think
of age production contract b Jon Robinson's your first pick.
And to hold that Atlanta team with Robinson and London,
Kyle Pitts and emerging Michael Pennix Darnell Mooney was almost
(18:47):
a thousand yard receiver last year, to hold them without
a point, that's impressive and that's something the defense can
build on.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
What did you think of the way they I mean,
you've just alluded to this, but the way they won
the game right thirty to nothings sounds good. It is good,
there's nothing, but it wasn't a huge offensive performance. It
was defense, it was turnovers, it was running the ball,
it was you know, managing and dictating the pace of
the game, which the team I mean don't Yeah, I
should have mentioned that, of course, But like you know,
the fact that they were able to after an zero
to two start, you know, really clumsy at times, kind
(19:17):
of sloppy, to come out and dominate and dictate a game.
What does that say about who they can be?
Speaker 6 (19:23):
Well, you hope it means that this is not an
aberration and this is something that is the start of
a movement here. But I thought Derek Brown really put
it into perspective. We talked to him probably fifteen minutes
after the game ended on our postgame show, and of
all the reactions that you would think that he might
(19:45):
give you a little bit of vengeance come up in
for the defense, there was none of that jubilation. There
was none of that. It was very matter of fact.
It was almost sobering. It was almost like, yeah, it's
one game. Uh, we still have to go out and
do it again. And talking to some of the guys
kind of off Mike throughout.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Training camp, there was very much an admission from those guys, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
We get the atmosphere, we get the angst that fans
may feel. We realize we have to earn back the
benefit of the doubt if we want to convince people
that we are better. And I did an event with
Chuba Hubbard last night. I did an event with Derek
Brown a couple of weeks ago, and that message has
kind of always been there, like let us build this
(20:34):
sample size out because they don't want to get caught
up in celebrating one game. And then you know, we
did this last year Week three as well, and then
we saw what happened after that.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Anie schro Voice of the Panthers, here with us on WFNZ,
Stay on the defense getting Derek back. Of course, we
talked about it a lot like an additional free agent
pick up, or it's just great to get this guy back.
But of the actual newcomers free agency or even rookies,
multiple of these guys popped on Sunday. But who really
stood out to you and has stood out not just
in one game but the last couple of weeks on
that side of the football.
Speaker 6 (21:07):
Kyle, I think one of the most encouraging things is
this draft class. On the defensive side, Lathan Ransom keeps
making plays. I don't know how much stock you put
into PFF. I take it with a grain of salt,
but sometimes there's some substance there. He grated out as
the best defensive back against the run for Week three.
(21:29):
You look at Nick s Gorton. I always default to
the Great Luke Keigley when he's up in the booth
with us and he talks about how s Gorton sets
the edge and the impact that he makes even when
it doesn't show up in the box score. I take
that as gospel when it comes from fifty nine, and
Luke loves Nick Gordon, so everybody listening keep that in mind.
He sees him as a three down guy, a guy
(21:52):
who can play the run, affect the pass rush, a
guy who's already commanding double teams as a rookie. Three
weeks into his career, uman Niellen only has one sack.
The Panthers only have one sack as a team. But
the ability to impact the pass rusher you mentioned, you know,
Derek brown A, Shawn has been solid. They did this
(22:13):
without Wharton, without Pat Jones, and then you see a
guy like Shaw Smith Wade, second year guy step up
make a big play. Mike Jack and j C. Horn
have been really good the first few weeks. So you
saw what the Falcons did early. They picked on twenty six,
they picked on Shawn Smith Wade, and then he stepped up.
And if you go back to that play where he
had to pick six, here's what was really impressive. His
(22:36):
assignment is to play that flat bubble five yard from
the line of scrimmage. He takes that away and then
his instincts take over and he sees the screen pass
coming and he jumps the route. Just to really sound
fundamental and then instinctive play. And I thought that was
such a great tipping point in the game. Because at
(22:57):
that point it was ten to nothing. The Panthers got
the ball to begin the third quarter, they didn't score,
they punted away, and in the back of your mind,
you're going, okay, are they inviting the Falcons back into
this game? If Atlanta scores on that drive, totally different game.
And he makes the play, which all of a sudden
felt like, hey, this may turn into a potential blowout.
(23:17):
And again, I think just for the guys in that
locker room to see domination, which is something we haven't
seen a whole lot of in the last few years,
that means a whole lot.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
So I saw the real that went viral of you
and Jake and Luke in the booth. It's the Tenero
McMillan play where it looks like he's hanging in the
air Jordan asked for multiple sex stick. Unbelievable, right, And
I love the reaction all of it. But right now
he's on pace for I believe, around eleven hundred yards
And the best part is it hasn't been cleaned, and
that's not a good thing. But you know, he's been
this good already and there's lots to clean up. How
(23:48):
impressed have you been, And I guess right now, how
smart does the organization look in taking this guy? Given
the way it all went down and the lead up
to it.
Speaker 6 (23:56):
He looks like he's got a chance, not just to
be a bona fide number one, but he's got a
chance to be in that special tier of number one receivers.
And I don't want to get too far ahead because
he's only three games into his career, but you see
a lot of what makes the guys that we talk
about quite often the jamar chases the Justin Jefferson's what
(24:19):
you saw with Neighbors last year, and there's other guys
around the league. He kind of has that the game
seems to come so easy to him. That's the one
thing that jumps out. Everything is so smooth. It's almost
like he flows like a river. There's nothing hard I
think of. You know, there's a great Hemingway line when
he's talking about a bullfighter and he says, I've never
seen him do an awkward thing. He won't until he
(24:42):
gets scared. He never gets scared, and that's kind of
Tetoa McMillan. There's a smoothness and a confidence to his game.
He makes the catch he turns. Everything is in one motion,
it's fluid. I really think he's got a chance to
be a special, special player who can be your number
one receiver for a long time here in the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
I'm with you a couple quick things. We'll let you
go a niche Shroft, the voice of the Panthers, with
us here on a Wednesday afternoon. So death in the afternoon,
by the way, was the Hemingway book, right, I believe
that was the one death in the afternoon.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
The afternoon.
Speaker 6 (25:13):
Who's actually believe it? With sun also rises?
Speaker 2 (25:16):
H Okay, look at us dropping Hemingway knowledge on a Wednesday.
Thoughts on New England. Obviously they listen to you and
I both know New England. We know the expectations, we
know the history, we know the fans, we know the media.
They're no doubt looking at Carolina like a get right game.
They're really frustrated about their performance against Pittsburgh. As you've
done your early prep for this iteration of the Patriots,
what stands out to you.
Speaker 6 (25:36):
Well, they're in disarray right now, are They're a team
that's been heavily penalized, They've struggled with turnovers, local product.
Drake May's actually played pretty well, but has not had
a whole lot of help around him. The Patriot receivers
are near the bottom of the league in terms of
yards accounted for. They go to their tight ends quite
(25:58):
a bit. That something to be concerned about because the
Panthers have been burned by tight ends early in the season.
Their top running back Ramandre Stevenson has a bad case
of fumble ititis, which goes back to last year. He
fumbled eight times since the start of last season. Fumbled
twice this past Sunday against Pittsburgh. Antonio Gibson also fumbled.
(26:21):
Both of them had fumbles inside the ten yard line.
I think you'll see a heavier dose of Treveon Henderson,
the young man who led Ohio State to a national
championship this past year. I think he's going to see
a lot of him, the rookie out of Ohio State. Defensively,
they have a lockdown corner in Christian Gonzales, but guess what,
(26:43):
he had a hamstring in July. He has not played
this year. The expectation seems to be that he's gonna
miss this week as well, and there's reports that there
was no setback, and you know this might be about
something more than just the injury, whether it's a contract.
So that's your top corner, a guy who's proven that
when he's on the field he can be a lockdown guy.
Can they get after the quarterback out? They can get
(27:04):
after the quarterback? Landry is back with Mike Rabel. But
Conle this is an opportunity for the Panthers, not just
this week, but the next four weeks. New England, Miami,
Dallas and the Jets. These are four teams in various
strict stages of distress, and it's an opportunity for Carolina
to take advantage of some of those teams the way
(27:25):
teams have taken advantage of Carolina when they've been in
that position the last few years.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
Annie Shroff, Voice of the Panthers, with us on the
hotline here on a Wednesday, Safe travels, Enjoy Foxborough and
we'll talk to.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
You real soon.
Speaker 6 (27:36):
All right, Kyle, you got a buddy.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
Annie Shroff, hanging out on a Wednesday, seven oh four,
five seven ninety six ten. Hit us up on the
FanDuel text line with your thoughts texts coming in during
the conversation somebody's someone pointed out, they said, wait, t
Max hurt, Teder McMillan's hurt. He didn't practice today. He
didn't practice today. But every indication that we've gotten between
the lines is that he should be good to go
(28:00):
on now. If he's not, that's disaster level stuff. Oh yeah,
I know. Mike Kaye was pointing out earlier that he
didn't see Xavier League at Teterero McMillan or Hunter Renfro
in practice today. But there's also with the Renfro thing,
a very reasonable explanation as to why his wife gave
birth to their third child. So congratulations to the Renfro family.
(28:21):
I believe there's a member of the Renfro family that
actually listens to this show every day, not Hunter himself,
So I don't know, but I congratulations to them. Want
to make sure that gets out because I got a
chance to talk to Hunter before the start of the season.
We talked about fatherhood, talked about his impending third child.
I believe he's got all girls at this point too,
so oh yeah.
Speaker 4 (28:40):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
I mean I don't have all girls, but me and
my son are out numbered, so I get that. So
congratulations to Hunter Renfro in Family, we got bow and
the dog doesn't count?
Speaker 4 (28:50):
Oh I did?
Speaker 2 (28:50):
Can I tell you what I did to my wife
real quick before I left today? What I introduced my
kids to the Three Ninjas movie trilogy this morning. I
actually talked it up last night because if you've ever
seen the Three Ninjas from the nineties, the millennial age
guys will we'll go with me on this Three Ninjas, right, Rocky,
Colt and Tom Tom. I brought it up to him
(29:10):
last night, and of course with my son it resonates
because that's his names, Like, what do you mean there's
another boy named Colt that exists. There's other boys named Yeah, man,
he's a ninja too. So I turned on Three Ninjas
before work this morning, and by the time I left,
they were all in costume roundhouse, kicking each other and
throwing everything they had they could get their hands on
across the room like Ninja stars. And I was like, bye, honey,
(29:31):
I'll see it work. They see at dinner time, he
just pulled.
Speaker 4 (29:36):
The greenades launcher threw it out.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Look at the text line, three Ninja guys is, let's
go see that's what Rocky loves in Mali. My wife's
just looking at me, like, what are you talking about? Like,
light up the eyes, boys, light up the eyes, and
she's completely lost. And I'm like, you don't get any
of these references, none of them. And so I show
it to the kids this morning and they love it,
absolutely love it. And they're all just flying around, karate
(30:01):
chopping each other roundhouse, kicking each other, falling into stuff,
and I'm like, bye, honey, see at dinner time tonight.
See at dinner seven oh four five, seven ninety six
to ten. Hit us up on the fan duel text line.
Right now we go to smoke on the headlines.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
All right, Kyle, this report is brought to you by
bet three six' five got. Ourselves you, know we're not
in a baseball, cities but something historic has been going
on in The midwest of The United, states specifically THE Al.
Central On august twenty, fifth The Detroit tigers held a
twelve and a half game lead over To Cleveland. Guardians
(30:38):
h less than a month, later The guardians beat The
tigers that tie them atop THE Al central and now
on the tiebreaker two after last night's win Over, Detroit,
kyle this has been one of the biggest collapses IN mlb. History,
yeah and now The tigers are likely still going to
make the playoffs because of the expanded.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Playoffs but everyone.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
Fault it was a shoe win that they were gonna
win The Al central even as recent as three weeks.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
Ago and we all know how this, ends, Right it
ends with an, immediate you, know exit from the. Playoffs
you don't roll into the postseason like this and then
suddenly turn things around and figure it.
Speaker 5 (31:14):
Out.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
Yeah and this is while The mets have been blowing
their chance to make the, playoffs and everyone In, Flushing's
New york has been, saying, well two thousand and seven
all over. Again so we had two big collapses down
to stretch for THE mlb, postseason and somehow The mets
have gotten Out mets in the.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
Process it's. Crazy, oh it's. Crazy all, right we'll come.
Back we'll tell you who balled. Out Roman harper coming
up in seventeen. Minutes Sports radio ninety two to SEVEN
wf AND Z.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
Sety get on your. Beat, hello look For. Ze can
you go to the. Buck he's got good coming back
To mars running into the. Area it'll pass.
Speaker 6 (32:10):
Toward brads for.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
Time for who balled out powered By High performance Real
Estate advisors and the biggest dad gumballer of them, All THOMAS. L.
Rudd go to High performance Real estate dot com and
they'll see you at the closing. Table smoke would you
bring for the?
Speaker 3 (32:36):
PEOPLE i gotta, Say Ace bailey balled out last night
because he is seeking new representation and he's parted ways
With Omar.
Speaker 4 (32:43):
Cooper so If.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
Ace bailey's gonna work, OUT i think the chances of
him working out in THE nba have drastically shot up
after finally getting away From Omar.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
Cooper oh, YEAH i MEAN i saw that news after
we we talked To paul b And cardi pre draft about.
That seemed like that was the right thing to. Do,
yeah that was the right thing to. Do i'm going
to go with actually a couple of names, here but
it starts With Drew. Brees earlier, today The Pro Football
hall Of fame announced the one hundred and twenty Eight
modern era players nominated for consideration for the class of
(33:16):
twenty twenty. Six the list includes thirteen players eligible for
the first, time including Quarterbacks Drew, Brees Philip, rivers And Alex.
Smith Running Backs Frank gore And lashawn, McCoy wide Receiver Larry,
fitzgerald tight Ends Greg olsen And Jason, witten offensive Lineman
david De castro And Marquise, pouncy defensive Lineman Gino atkins
(33:38):
And Jirell, casey and Linebacker Thomas. Davis Drew brees the
first name that jumps out twenty Ten Super BOWL mvp
when he led The saints over The. Colts breeze ranks
second all time in career passing yards and career passing.
Touchdowns and then There's Philip, rivers who presents a much
more interesting. Case i've been think career passing, yards sixth
(34:01):
in career passing. Touchdowns, however of, course never won A Super,
bowl even appeared in, one and had just a five
and seven record in the. Playoffs Pro Football References hall
Of fame monitor Has rivers with a score of ninety,
eight slightly below the Average hall Of fame score for the,
position which is one oh. Eight of, course several players
Below rivers in the, metric including one of his contemporaries
(34:25):
of the, Era Kurt, warner whose career overlapped With Philip
rivers made it To canton so those. Players you, Know
i'll say they bawled. Out but As i'm saying, that
you're over there doing like imaginary check marks in the.
Speaker 4 (34:36):
Air do you Think Philip rivers is in The hall Of? Fame?
Yes he should?
Speaker 10 (34:38):
Be?
Speaker 7 (34:38):
No, no?
Speaker 4 (34:39):
No do you think he's in The hall Of? Fame?
Speaker 2 (34:40):
Not should? Be do you think he gets into The
hall Of fame? Eventually it's going to be a.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
WHILE i think he's going to be one of the
more contentious cases that we've seen for a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
Ever, so but, yeah he should be in.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
More more contentious as a, Candidate Philip rivers Or Cam
newton For hall Of? Fame, inshrinement who's the harder argument
to make For cam Or Philip?
Speaker 4 (35:03):
Rivers? Oh i'm.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
Serious PROBABLY i want people to weigh in on this
selm because of the lack of postseason. Success, okay, Okay
BUT i also would argue by, saying, well he played
In foxboro with A parsley torn Acl, sure damn near
won a game against the Undefeated. Patriots so and, oh
by the, way a year prior to, that they should
have beat The. Patriots If marlon McCree knew to just
(35:26):
get down and not fumbling the ball after intercepting. It,
okay So i'll also say that, Too and who knows
what would happen, then because The chargers in that era
Had Peyton manning's, number they played in THE Afc championship,
game and then you get A Super bowl, matchup most
likely between The bears and The chargers In. Miami And
i'll Take Philip rivers ten times out of ten Over Rex.
(35:47):
Grossman SO i Think Philip rivers probably has the better
statistical and longevity. Case, Definitely he's in that very good
but not quite elite. Tier but his top ten in
career two totals and yards and touchdowns that is that's
kind of hard to. Ignore cam's got the better impact
and career peak, case, right.
Speaker 4 (36:08):
But it didn't last as.
Speaker 5 (36:09):
Long.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Right he changed how the quarterback position was, played he
was a LEAGUE, mvp had one of the most memorable
seasons individual seasons. Ever it really comes down to if
voters value longevity in, numbers Where Philip rivers has the,
edge or if they value impact and peak, dominance where
you Know Cam newton has the. EDGE i would say
(36:29):
That Philip rivers probably has the better. Case right, now
seventeen seasons started two hundred and forty straight. Games he's
eighth all time in passing yards and passing, touchdowns.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
Tied to deal With, Spanos yes.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
Stop ten all time in most major passing categories at.
Retirement also very. Durable that guy played through a lot of. Injuries,
famously he got it out that two thousand and SEVEN
Afc championship game with the torn acl.
Speaker 4 (36:57):
And he actually played well in that game.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Too he did did now of course With Cam it's
twenty FIFTEEN mvp fifteen to one record face of the,
league revolutionized the quarterback, position seventy five career rushing TOUCHDOWNS
nfl record for, quarterbacks over fifty six hundred rushing yards
and we all again most people know, this but like
a blend of, size power and speed that really just
made him. Unique three Time Pro, Bowler Offensive rookie of The,
(37:22):
Year Heisman, Trophy National championship At. Auburn incredible cultural. IMPACT
i mean that's the other thing. Too you talk cultural,
impact It's cam Over Philip rivers all. Day And i'm
sure there will be people who think, that you, know
that shouldn't, matter but it does and it will to an.
EXTENT i don't know if he gets in, AGAIN i
Think rivers probably has a slightly better. Case but you
think he's, in you think he's getting, In, yes, okay
(37:42):
and he should get. Into but here's the problem with.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
Cam just because you won AN mvp and just because
you have a culture impact doesn't mean you're going to
get in The hall Of. Fame Joe fisman still not
in The hall Of. Fame and he won AN, mvp
he won A Super. BOWL i mean he. Was when
you think of quarterbacks In washington to this, Day Joe
fisman still at the very, least he's the second name
that comes. Up it's either you mentioned, him you Mentioned Doug,
williams or you Mentioned Sonny. Jurgensen those are the names
(38:07):
you come up. With, sure but he's still not in
The hall Of. Fame Rich cannan won AN, mvp had
a great late career, renaissance but he's not in The
hall Of.
Speaker 4 (38:15):
Fame Brian, sipe, well it's not the. Same but he
won AN. Mvp he's. Not, No i'm with you on,
that go, Ahead, YEAH i just it's just one of
those things.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
Too we also have to let people know The hall
Of fame is gonna be a little bit more a
strenuous process now because they're not allowing as many modern
era finalists. In and unfortunately this year that really hurts
because two of the First Battle hall Of famers this
year Are Larry fitzgerald And Drew. Brees that ain't gonna.
(38:44):
Wait they ain't gonna. Wait now that that could Impact.
Luke luke could still get. In BUT i also think
The hall Of fame voters try to get guys in
that have been winning for a long. Time AND i
look at a guy Like Rodney, harrison this could be
his year where he finally slides on. In we kind
of saw it With Fronde, arbor who was waiting a long.
Time SO i feel, like IF i had to guess right,
now AND i believe it's three modern era of people
(39:07):
to get, in the class is likely going to Be Drew,
Brees Larry, fitzgerald and Then Rodney harrison and Or Toy.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Holt, okay all.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
Right Three wins has accused us of doing drugs on the.
Air he Says Cam newton in The hall Of, fame
are you guys smoking? Crack, no, sir there is no
crack cocaine consumption on this, show not on the. Air,
anyway go do, it he, says to even mention that
is a joke and an insult to The hall Of. Fame,
No Cam newton has an outside chance to make The
hall Of. Fame this isn't just a couple Of homer
(39:34):
radio hosts bringing this. Up there are a lot of
players who would espouse that opinion, too and have espoused
that opinion because of his, impact because of his peak,
dominance because of him revolutionizing the quarterback. Position that's, why
and that's where you know The hall Of fame could
potentially come into. PLAY i would call it an outside
chance For, cam WHEREAS i Think Philip rivers is like
fifty to fifty right there on the. Cusp all, right,
(39:54):
well maybe this comes. Up i'm sure we know The
Drew brees. Answer but a man who played With Drew
brees and he's in A hall Of fame of his own.
Right he's A New Orleans Saints hall Of, famer Former
panthers safety as. WELL sec network Analyst Roman harper back
when we Returned Sports radio ninety two SEVEN wfnz
