Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Today our number two emanating live from the Chandler Volta Studios.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
The Carolinas personal injury lawyers go to Cvinjurylaw dot com.
That's CV injury law dot com. Big thanks to chipattersoncbsports
dot com for hanging out as he does each and
every Friday. Marty Snyder will do the same. Coming up
in twenty two minutes, we'll talk about the race ahead
this weekend in Kansas. We'll talk about Ryan Blaney's win
last week in New Hampshire and get his thoughts on
(00:44):
the Jeff Gluck report from The Athletic yesterday that NASCAR
brass mulling the possibility of scrapping the playoff format altogether
after twenty one years of what started as the Chase
and is morphed and evolved into a full blown playoff,
but one that is not exactly producing big ratings so far.
Here in twenty twenty five, Flounder sitting in for smoke
(01:05):
on a Friday. You're a big NASCAR fan, would you
like to see the playoff scraft.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:09):
I mean, as a Chris Busher fan, I would definitely
like to see the playoff scrapped because he would have
been in the playoffs or would have had a chance
to at least compete deeper into the season. But as
a NASCAR fan, I mean, I like the fact that
it does make winning important. I do think that is
certainly an element that you like about it. But I mean, yeah,
(01:30):
when you look at this year, it would be an
incredibly close points race, So I don't think going back
to the old way and making it to where every
race matters, I think I don't think it would be
a bad thing.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
So yeah, I'd be on board with it. Okay, all right?
Is there a crossover argument there as it relates to
say college football and how we got folks that still
covet the old BCS era because every game mattered and
now it's watered down and teams can still make the
playoff with two or even three losses.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
Is there a I mean, yeah, comparison to make that comparison.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
You know.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
Again, the thing is is that if you're going with
that comparison for college football, though, you are relying on
computers to pick who ends up making the National champions Right,
this is a little bit different, but so I think
I think you should be on board with this if
you're a NASCAR fan, I think there will be a
lot of people that will be on board with this.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
And I don't think there's enough.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
People that are sold on the new version of the
playoffs to where there's going to be an uproar, Like
if the younger portion of the fan base was really
that sold on this, then I don't think you make
this move. But I mean, look at Smoke Man. Smoke
is lost on the old format.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
We had a guy call in yesterday saying, I'm twenty
four years old. This was supposed to appeal to me,
and I hate it. Scrap it. So you know that's
one voice, but I get your point. A lot of
guys that this was supposed to be targeted toward, they
don't really love it. So we had that going on
and yesterday I do want to mention again this news
broke later in the show. I know Smoke passed it
the longest part of his headline segment, but the Hornets
(03:01):
cut loose a former first rounder yesterday, Nick Smith Junior
was let go by the Charlotte Hornets, and this is
not really a shock to me, although I have gotten
a couple of texts from Hornets fans who said they
don't love this decision, but I think the writing's been
on the wall for a while now. Two years after
the Hornets drafted Nick Smith Junior with the twenty seventh
(03:23):
overall pick, they decided to part ways with him, Which
isn't a shock, right. I mean, maybe if you're a
first rounder, or because he's a first rounder, you think
that would have afforded him a little bit more time
to prove what he's all about. But it didn't really
turn out to be the case. And when you look
at what they have on the roster right now, you
got Brandon, these guys competing for minutes in the back court,
(03:43):
Brandon Miller, Colin Sexton, Trey Mann, Conker Nipple, Josh Greenman,
to say nothing of course, of LaMelo Ball. And then
you got Liam McNeely two in there, who was another
late first round draft pick who they like. But the
clock's officially ticking on him too. I'm not heartbroken by
the loss of Nick Smith Junior. I thought he got
better and it's not as if he's been there forever.
(04:05):
But I thought maybe we would have seen another or
a more sizable jump from him, given all the minutes
that came his way as a result of the injuries
the last two years. But I just don't think we
saw it, and I don't think they saw it either. Clearly,
I think this is a sign of the roster getting better.
I really do so. If you're a Hornets fan, I
get it. He's a guy that you saw improve. He's
(04:25):
someone that was easy to root for, so I get
it from that aspect. But I do think, especially when
they signed Spencer Dinwiddie, that should have been your clue
that he's probably not going to be one of the
guys that makes the roster because just look at how
many guys in that backcourt there are. I think this
was a move that should have been expected, and I
(04:46):
hope he can latch on somewhere else and have some success,
no doubt. I mean, like, best of luck to him.
But again, you've got LaMelo Ball, he's your starting point guard,
Brandon Miller's you're starting to You just brought in Colin
Sexton via trade, who I think can really help this team.
You made it a priority to get Trey Mann back
even though he missed a ton of time. Again last
year when he was healthy, he was fantastic. You've got
divine minutes for kan Ka Nipple.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
It sounds like they still really like what Josh Green
brings to them from a defense to defensive standpoint and
some of the other you know, intangible type stuff or
I should say periphery type stuff that he does. So yeah,
the writing was on the wall for this one. I
haven't seen much in the way of pushback on the
Nick Smith waving, but I just I didn't think they
saw enough improvement. And I'm not surprised.
Speaker 5 (05:26):
They mean, he would not play guys if there weren't
the injuries that they've had over the last few years. Like,
he's a guy that was in there because of how
hurt this roster was. This roster's improving, hopefully it's going
to stay healthier. I think that's something that you should
be able to get behind.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
He was also in there because Mitch Cupcheck drafted him,
not Jeff Peterson, so that also needs to be pointed,
like he was a Mitch Cupcheck guy, not Jeff Peterson.
Let's sneak in a phone call real quick. Jersey Frank
wants to weigh in here on a football Friday. What's up, Frank?
How are you well?
Speaker 6 (05:56):
I Hey, Kyle. You know Jersey Frank is obviously from Jersey.
Speaker 7 (05:59):
But Jersey moved here in the early nineties to go
to work for a guy named Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Speaker 6 (06:04):
And great boss. Love them, miss them every single day.
Speaker 7 (06:08):
And my point is, you know what you were talking
about briefly about the new target audience, et.
Speaker 6 (06:14):
Cetera, etcetera. Well, you know the target audience.
Speaker 7 (06:17):
Is obviously younger, but in their heyday, it was me,
it was it was my guy, it was my age.
Speaker 6 (06:22):
Of guys they were looking for.
Speaker 7 (06:23):
And so I've I've learned to overcome a lot of
the changes. But I mean they changed the car, they
changed the number of positions, They change this, they changed that,
They change where the races are. They need to put
the point system.
Speaker 6 (06:35):
Back the way it was. They.
Speaker 7 (06:37):
I hope to god they do it, because you can't
change everything. I heard it talking about moving the super Bowl,
talking about moving changing this, some stuff.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
I think you just need to leave alone. Just leave it.
Be like you want to do some changes, great, but
you're going.
Speaker 7 (06:55):
To alienate somebody when you when you keep changing everything,
whether it's NFL, NASCAR, hockey, whatever, and some of the
hardcore fans, and I.
Speaker 6 (07:05):
Know you see it. The people on NASCAR radio won't
talk about it.
Speaker 7 (07:09):
There's a reason why the stands are empty. There's a
reason why those stands are empty. I can tell you
right now. Dover Pocono, Bristol, people leave a ticket Kyle
in their will.
Speaker 6 (07:20):
They were leaving their tickets in their will for these people.
Speaker 8 (07:23):
So I hope it's what hope NASCAR does it.
Speaker 6 (07:27):
That means they're listening, which I hope they're doing.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
And I love the point you made there, Frank, thank
you for the phone call. This is change happens, right.
So I mentioned baseball yesterday and they're being an inherent stubbornness.
Baseball was reactive, not proactive for the longest time, and
baseball made some changes that the purest the traditionalists did
not like. The bigger basis, the extra ending runner rule,
(07:52):
of course, the pitch clock. But it's helped the game.
It sped the game up. It feels silly to give
it too much credit, but I mean, you look right now,
baseball ratings are up. Gate numbers are up across the
league and a lot of places, not everywhere, in places
like Pittsburgh, it's still rather depressing, but we all understand why.
But those changes work, they helped, and in this case,
NASCAR's got a chance to both fix something that's not working,
(08:15):
change something that's not working, but also change it back
to something that the core audience that is aging maybe
willing to come back to. Like if they've lost touch
with the sport, maybe they're willing to give it another try.
If the sport says, you know what, maybe it was
better back when we did it this way, back when
the sport was on top, you know, let's try that again.
(08:35):
Is that enough to get everybody, at least for a
little while reattached to this sport to see what it's
all about, to see if it brings back some flashes
of what it used to be. Let me get some
more phone calls in. Rod is up next? Rod? What's
going on?
Speaker 9 (08:48):
KB? What's happening now? Hey? The call it it just
caught in from Jersey made me think about this smoke
is in the way in. But I don't agree as
Carship changed back. If he's talking about the old point system,
from the time when he moved here, the Dyln Hart days.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
The Winston Cup points, Yes, the Winston Cup series points system.
Speaker 9 (09:11):
When you can win the Cup with three races to
go and we're watching three two lane duck races. I
don't agree with that, okay, but I get what he's
saying because NASCAR when they went to that, in my opinion,
going to the card tomorrow, this was like those six
those seven to me, that was the start of the
downfall of the popularity of the sport. I think they
(09:34):
need to see those cars back up them. Cars are safe.
No one has had any Hey if Carl Edwards, if
Brad can flip car Edwards into the grand fans and
he walked away, Hey, those cars are safe. And I
think and before card tomorrow, Tony Stewart was flying in
(09:55):
the air the same race, well you know, doctor him,
but dyl Nhart, same Tony Stewart went flying in the
air with Klaus running under him that same race.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Rod, let me ask you a questions. Let me ask
you a question because you're you're a knowledgeable NASCAR fan.
So my dad texted me yesterday during the show to
suggest something because I think he likes the idea of
going back, but maybe not all the way back. So
what he seemed to say, what he seemed to suggest
to me is thirty six races, right, okay, thirty five
you're accumulating points. Race thirty six, you take the top
eight points in the field and you send them to Talladega.
(10:28):
You send them to you know, a rotating track, and
it's winner take all in week thirty six. What do
you think about that?
Speaker 9 (10:34):
I like that, But my only issue with, you know,
that type of idea is what do we do with
the other twenty comings Hovas? Are they still out there competing? Two?
They've got to have some type of I don't know,
consolation or well.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
They get thirty five. They get thirty five races for that,
don't they.
Speaker 9 (10:52):
Well that's you're right, you got to point there. I
absolutely like that because of playoff ten races. I mean,
I mean, that's that's a long time and I feel like,
like you say, man, let them let them race for
the changer in Tallidator, Like Dad says, I like that. Okay,
I mean that's a good idea.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
All right, I love it. Ahead ahead, Who.
Speaker 9 (11:12):
Words for you, excel, two words for you, Deebo Samuel and.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Oh okay, not the first time we've heard that comparison.
Back to the phone lines, Robert is up next, Robert,
what's on your mind?
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Yeah, what's going on? Guys?
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Talk to me.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
You know, I'm I'm a peripheral NASCAR fan, but I
tell you, I think they made a huge mistake when
they took all these races away from the tradisto Taxi
tracks a real corporate because it's only the amount of
time for those people look interesting. You you left your
core people there, so you know, it's nice to see
them come back to places like Wilkesboro and come back
(11:48):
to Rocky Am every once in a while. But the
thing that's always been confusing to me about the points race,
Why is there so little weight with winning races. I mean,
a guy can win six races and stuff, and and
he's still not going to win the championship like Daytona
is the biggest race of the year. Why aren't those
(12:09):
major points?
Speaker 3 (12:12):
So are you talking about like a dynamic points system?
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Yes, I mean it's really I mean it becomes a
war of attritionian. You know, the person that gets the
most top fives or whatever, that's the person that gets
the points, but the person that wins, I mean, they
don't get that many points. That doesn't make any sense
to me.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Okay, listen, I appreciate the phone call. I'd actually loved panthers. PSL.
Sucker just said Kb's dad for NASCAR commissioner. Yeah, listen,
we all have good and bad ideas. I've lived. I've
known my dad for a long time. He certainly had
his share of, you know, questionable ideas. He'd say the
same thing about me. But I like this one, I
really do. I love the idea. Let him at thirty
five of the thirty six races on the circuit, go
(12:51):
accumulate points and then take your top eight, maybe even
your top sixteen. You can rotate that final race of
the year, but you got sixteen drivers in playing. The
final race winner takes all. Dad even broke down the format.
He said, two seventy five lap stages than a one
hundred and twenty five lap stage in the final race,
but the final race winner takes all. No more weeks
(13:11):
long convoluted, you know, manufactured. This is not a stick
in ball sports. Smoke loves to say that all the time.
It's not a stick and ball sport. Stop trying to
treat the playoffs like it's a stick in ball sport.
And I like that. I mean, you could race thirty
five weeks and that thirty sixth week, those points to
those top eight, top twelve, top sixteen, send them to
a track, winner takes all final race. The ratings would
be through the roof. I think I think the.
Speaker 5 (13:33):
Top eight would make a lot of sense because it
makes the regular season really matter a lot. Yeah, and
then you if you're in that top eight, which is
going to be the best drivers in the sport that year,
that's going to give you a chance to win the championship. Now,
there would be moments and you can still have this now,
it just rarely happens. There would be moments that whoever
wins the race doesn't end up winning the championship. But
(13:54):
I really do think that would make that final race
very interesting. And the big key is, yes, please move
it around. I get it. It's back at Miami now,
we like that, but if you throw it at different tracks.
I mean, I've brought it up before starting the season
at Daytona, ending the season at Daytona. People have I
mean just blasted me. You can't end with the restrictor
(14:16):
plate race. That's a wildcard track. Hey, man, I think
it'd be really interesting. You know what, go to Bristol.
Just do something different than what you're doing right now.
Rob is up next on the phone lines. He wants
to change the subject. Talk a little college football. That's
okay with me.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
Rob.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
What's going on, Bud?
Speaker 9 (14:31):
Kyle? What's going on?
Speaker 6 (14:32):
Man?
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Talk to me?
Speaker 6 (14:34):
Can you hear me?
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Yes, sir?
Speaker 9 (14:36):
Yeah, you hear me.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
I got you and we can hear you.
Speaker 9 (14:39):
Ok yeah, Kyle?
Speaker 6 (14:40):
Man A couple of things.
Speaker 10 (14:41):
One, I'm an sec guy, but I will be locked
in the night Forida Virginia Florida State game. I'm picking
Virginia with the upsets like I like Georgia tomorrow, O
Babama and Dan. I know you probably talked about it
the last week or so, but I didn't. I've been away,
so I hadn't got your take it as far as
so you like on the coach and hire for VTA.
You can kind of tell me your thought on those
(15:01):
those two games and then to be picking Hirt.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Well, okay, all right. I appreciate the phone call.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Brother.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Good to hear from you tonight. That's a ballsy pick.
I think I think Virginia is gonna hang with Florida States.
I think I think Virginia can score.
Speaker 5 (15:12):
Castellanos is also also banged up. That's one thing to
remember about this game. So the problem, though, is that
Virginia's defense still kind of sucks. Yes, so I still
think Florida State's going to run the ball, find ways
to score. They're better in the trenches. So I think
Virginia hangs in this game. But I think Florida State
wins it. I'm going to say thirty to twenty three.
I'm gonna get here. Too many people are picking the upset.
(15:33):
If this was one of those ones where there weren't
a lot of people that were going after this one,
I may jump on it because I really like Virginia's offense,
but you're right, that defense stinks. I think Florida State's
gonna be able to run the ball. Castellanos, I think
is going to be able to make some plays with
his legs that he wouldn't be able to make against
a better defense.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Give me Florida State to win a close one. I
like that. Bama Georgia. It's hard to pick against Georgia.
Betwixt the hedges, that environment. It's just so amazing, and
I think I think George is winning. But would you
be shocked if Alabama went in there and one I
would not be stunned.
Speaker 5 (16:08):
They have bounced back now again, they have not played
anybody of significance. But I do think that Ty Simpson
is a lot more confident now than he was.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
In that game against Florida State.
Speaker 5 (16:18):
I think he's certainly gonna put on a pretty strong performance.
But the way that they looked in that game against Tennessee,
I think is enough for Georgia to be able to
win this game. I really liked what I saw from
Gunner Stockton. I think he's gonna be perfectly fine in
this matchup.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
All right, and Rob As far as the Virginia Tech
job goes, I really don't know right now. I think
they're gonna make I believe they're gonna make Shane Beemer
tell them no first and foremost. I do believe they're
gonna make that phone call and make him stay. Now
he might say no, he might not be ready to
leave South Carolina. That's a very real possibility. I think
they're gonna do that. Bruce Arians is helping to lead
the charge in terms of the coaching search. Their names
(16:53):
out there. Dan Mullen at UNLV's come up a bit.
I don't love that one personally. Bob Chesney at jmu's
come up. I'm intrigued. I like John Summer all but
I think he played at Kentucky and if the Wildcats
make a change, he's likely going there or somewhere else
in the SEC. So they've got time here, and I
think they're going to take their time because right now
they're focused on all the money they're trying to pump
(17:14):
into the program and change things structurally, so that one
of the benefits they got from firing Brent Prye after
week three is they can take their time over the
next couple of months because they might like guys right
now who might flame out. They might be, you know,
on the fence about guys who might turn out to
have strong finishes, and I think you're not going to
see a hire made until December, so they're going to
(17:35):
take their time on this. I'm a little bit I
don't have a great feel for this right now. I
don't know where they're going to go. If if Shane
Biemer tells him no and again, I think they're going
to ask then they've got multiple options, but they're going
to take their time and do their due diligence. And
it's also interesting that they've taken this out of the
hands of the ad and the president and the Board
of Visitors are conducting this search, kind of like North
Carolina did with Bill Belichick. So yeah, make sure you.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
Do it legally, Kyle, and don't try to go behind
people's backs to mean the hire.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
Okay, all right, listen, I'll keep taking your phone calls.
I promise you that. But first we come back, we
pick up the NASCAR Conversation with Marty Snyder, NBC turner,
Amazon NASCAR studio host and Pitt reporter. And you also
know he is a proud but just like you, long
suffering Panthers PSL owner. We'll get his thoughts on Panthers
and Patriots Sunday at Foxborough as well. Sports Radio ninety
two to seven wfn Z cruising on a Friday, send
(18:36):
us your Monday headlines today Panthers edition. College football too,
by the way, not a big weekend at all in
the ACC, but massive games in the SEC, the Big Ten.
A couple of games on tomorrow night. By the way,
which of those games gets the audio in your house
tomorrow nights? I almost called you smoke Flounder sitting in
for smoke. Do you give the Oregon Penn State game
or Alabama Georgia of the audio?
Speaker 5 (18:57):
Well, here in the WFNZ studios, Kyle, because I will
be doing the Charlotte FC game, I will be listening
to Penn State Oregon while listening to.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
A Cross into the Box start.
Speaker 5 (19:11):
I will be listening to both of those. So yeah,
Keenn State Oregon definitely gonna get the audio. That's gonna
be a fantastic matchup.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Okay, I think yeah. I've got to get the kids
into bed early Tomorrow night. Typically bedtimes around eight o'clock,
so for seven thirty kicks, I'm gonna need one game
on the living room TV, the other game back in
the sun room so I can go back and forth.
I really like watching games on my phone. I don't
know why, so I've got to figure that out. But
looking forward to tomorrow night, we.
Speaker 5 (19:35):
Got the three TV set up here and then the
computer if needed as well, so a possible four TV setup.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Well, one day when you're sharing a TV with toddlers.
You'll understand just how difficult legit the logistics can be.
All right, let's talk a little football, but a lot
of racing right now with Marty Snyder, NBC Turner, Amazon,
NASCAR studio host and Pitt reporter. He's back with us
for a Friday conversation. Marty Snyder, what's up, brother? How
are you? We got him?
Speaker 6 (20:02):
Hey? You got it?
Speaker 3 (20:03):
Oh, we got you. What's going on, Bud?
Speaker 6 (20:05):
Hey, what's happening?
Speaker 8 (20:06):
Sorry about that little bluetooth action?
Speaker 6 (20:08):
Getting in the car now? Everything good?
Speaker 9 (20:10):
Man?
Speaker 11 (20:11):
About to head out to Kansas. And I'm assuming you
asked Panthers, Is that correct?
Speaker 3 (20:16):
Well, I haven't asked yet, but yeah, Well, you know,
let's let's talk good though, because we don't know what's
on the horizon. So let's just simply start with the
fact that they beat the snot out of Atlanta on
Sunday in the home opener. That's something worth celebrating.
Speaker 11 (20:30):
Absolutely worth celebrating. And I tell you what I mean, honestly,
I just hope that the defense that as Giero Everros
put out on the field is for the last six
quarters is what shows up this weekend. You know, to me,
It's kind of a weird game this weekend in New England, right,
the Patriots so good at run, defense, defense, and the
Panters you know.
Speaker 6 (20:50):
Kind of drive off of that.
Speaker 11 (20:52):
That's going to be interesting that, Yeah, to live off
the Atlanta game.
Speaker 6 (20:55):
I find it interesting. Their OC said that it was
dead at.
Speaker 11 (20:58):
Bank of America Stadium. From everybody I heard, it was
pretty alive, yep.
Speaker 8 (21:02):
And and I you know, I think, listen, can the
you know.
Speaker 6 (21:07):
Can the defense really be that good? I don't know.
Speaker 11 (21:09):
I hope so, man, And if there's still a focus
on moving forward making the defense better in twenty six
and I think special teams gets lost this whole thing
as well, you know. I mean I thought Ryan Fitzgerald
was amazing, and I didn't know this was coming and.
Speaker 6 (21:25):
He would be this good and this would be.
Speaker 9 (21:27):
This much of a weapon.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
You know, won't stay that way all year long. But
that that was a very.
Speaker 11 (21:33):
Shocking, surprisingly shocking game that that the Panthers turned in
on Sunday against the Falcons. While I was doing the
race in New Hampshire, I told Jeff Burton no updates,
and he kept giving me off their updates.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
And I can't giving an update because.
Speaker 11 (21:45):
You're going to be happy, and I'm like, all right,
you better be better, be right, Jeff, don't tease me.
And when he said thirty to enough and iout fell.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
Out on the floor.
Speaker 11 (21:53):
So so yeah, I was really happy to hear that result.
Speaker 8 (21:57):
So even when racing's going on, where.
Speaker 11 (22:00):
Paying a little bit of attention to what's going on
on the football field as well.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
I believe it to me, Marty, And I think you
touched on it early in your answer there. This weekend,
we all know the Panthers might lose. Like I got
people texting the text life, Oh, they're going to come
back down to earth. Last week was at an anomaly.
You know they're gonna get humbled up there. This is
still the pen and it's like, yeah, no, we know that,
but it would be so big for them to go
up there and win, especially down a couple of key pieces.
To me, this would be a huge organizational win Marty,
(22:25):
that after a slow start you find your footing and
even down a couple of pieces, if you can go
on the road and win, that's huge for the Organization
for Culture for belief right, oh.
Speaker 8 (22:36):
One thousand percent.
Speaker 11 (22:37):
And I think I think you know because you look
at the teams. In my opinion, there are sort of
equal talent sets in a lot of ways. You know,
there's a lot of you know, missing pieces on the
offense for the Patriots, and well, lord knows, they got
a billion dollars in salary cap that they're going to
eventually spend next year, I assume.
Speaker 6 (22:54):
But but I think they're a well coached team.
Speaker 11 (22:58):
They're pretty on par with the fan there's talent level wise,
so this is a game that they could and maybe
should win. I think it's interesting they're going up against
Drake and May lifelong Panther stand and actually knew that
JJ Jansen still played for the Panthers, which was fascinating
this week. But but no, I think, yeah, if you
can rally, you can wind up two and two out
(23:20):
of this four game stretch after how the horrible it
looked after Week one, that was just atrocious. If you
can be two and two after the Patriots game, that's
that's a big win for this organization and.
Speaker 6 (23:33):
Has they have a real chance.
Speaker 11 (23:35):
And look, the South is terrible, right, they're in the
right division to win it, Like the Bucks are all
hurt now, the Falcons clearly aren't that great. The Saints
are the Saints. I mean, I hate to even think
about them possibly winning the division, but it but it's
all right there, certainly for the future, but maybe even
this year.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
Marty Snyder hanging out with us. First Friday conversation. Marty
had a time where there's a lot of discussion going
on about the next gen car, about TV ratings and
the future of the sport and everything else. I mentioned
the report about potential changes to the playoff format in
the previous segment, and my phone linees lit up. You know,
so we got people that do care about this a lot.
(24:14):
A Jeff Gluck report from The Athletic that NASCAR is
seriously entertaining a return to a full season points format,
dropping the current playoff system. What if any signals are
you seeing inside the sport from teams, drivers, leadership about
just how seriously that's being considered.
Speaker 11 (24:32):
I think that it is. I think everything's on the
table right now.
Speaker 6 (24:37):
And I've been around a lot of you.
Speaker 11 (24:40):
Know, NASCAR brass in the last couple of weeks. I
think everything is on the table right now. I would
say that Jeff is accurate and saying it is being considered.
I do not think at the end of the day,
that's what they'll wind up doing. I think there's going
to be an element of whatever happens that NASCAR does,
a sort of getting.
Speaker 6 (24:58):
Back to the root to who NASCAR is. I don't
know that.
Speaker 11 (25:03):
That thirty six races is the right way to go
with that. I could see a system where they do
ten race, a ten race playoffs, maybe getting back to
what the original chase was back in the day. I
can't stand that term. I love playoffs much.
Speaker 8 (25:17):
Better, but you know, getting back to what that was.
Speaker 11 (25:20):
Just a ten race playoff system. I could definitely see.
Speaker 6 (25:24):
That being a play I could also see there's a
there's talk of a.
Speaker 11 (25:28):
Hybrid system where they do they do a ten race system,
but they do seven races. Then there's an elimination of
and then and then the final you know, five drivers
or final four drivers battled out over the final three
races of the season.
Speaker 6 (25:45):
I think that's under consideration as well.
Speaker 11 (25:47):
But I just I think the thirty six race, you know,
because listen, you sold to you know, the fans, you
sold the networks, you sold all these people playoffs, right,
and to just walk away from that completely with probably
be a bridge too far. But something in the middle
where you can say, hey, there's still a playoffs, but
it's ten weeks or it's seven weeks and three weeks.
(26:08):
I think to me, that ten play and I see
that being a much more viable option.
Speaker 8 (26:13):
And I listen, they don't have their minds made up.
I was, I was with some NASCAR folks last week.
Speaker 6 (26:18):
They still don't have their minds made up. They've got
a lot to work through. And I know from our side.
Speaker 11 (26:22):
Of the NBC we have said, and this is public knowledge,
we said, hey, we'll support you NASCAR, whatever you want
to do. This is your decision. You guys make this decision.
And as Jeff Bluck talked about that on this podcast.
Speaker 8 (26:35):
So we're leading it all in NASCAR's hands.
Speaker 11 (26:37):
And whatever they decide, I know all the networks will
be on board and say, yeah, let's make it happen.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
What are the biggest risks that they'd be taking, Like
in your view, for instance, if NASCAR, you know, were
to abandon the playoffs, you know, what are the biggest
risks there? And conversely, you know what upside could reintroducing
let's say, a straight points championship, bring to teams, drivers
and even the fans.
Speaker 11 (26:58):
Well, the biggest risk is you have happened in IndyCar
this year and they only have a seventeen race schedule
and Alex Blow won the championship with three races to go,
three races and there was nothing to decide except second on.
Now you go back to the mat knsith year in
two thousand and four where he won the championship. I
(27:18):
believe two or three races before the end of the year.
You know, you just don't want to be in that situation.
That's the biggest thing where you literally where we.
Speaker 8 (27:27):
Lead off a pre race show at Homestead.
Speaker 11 (27:29):
Miami next year and we say, hey, all Kyle Larson
has to do is start his engine today and he
wins the championship. That's so anti climactic. You know, you've
got to have something at stake in the final few races.
And I still am a massive believer in the cutoffs
and that they move the needles. Fans get excited about that.
There's drama involved in that. It ramps up the racing
(27:52):
good or bad, right to where there's an intensity level
that you know, hey, that guy needs that spot, he
could move that guy and he gets into the next
round or he's done in the playoffs. You know, to me,
there still needs to be an elimination. There still needs
to be some sort of championship round. I do, and
I've said it on your show many times. I do
(28:13):
think a one race championship though, should not happen anymore.
I think after this year that needs to be done.
It just doesn't. It's not enough of a sample set.
A three race you know, sample set is enough and
you can kind of get a feel for hey over
the three race stretch that driver is the best and
they are in the championship.
Speaker 6 (28:32):
To me, there needs to be some sort of championship round.
Speaker 11 (28:35):
But the thirty sixth race thing, you know, you don't
want the champion winning.
Speaker 6 (28:40):
Three or four races before the season's over.
Speaker 11 (28:42):
With it just it doesn't help anybody in that scenario.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Marty Snyder with us for a Friday conversation Real Quick
on New Hampshire. Last week, Tim Penske dominating Legano when's
the pole, leads the most laps, but he can't hold
off Ryan Blaney at the end. From your vantage point,
what were the key takeaways from that race? He's both
from a performance and championship implication standpoint, Well.
Speaker 8 (29:04):
I think the championship runs through Team Penske.
Speaker 11 (29:07):
Yes the key takeaway, and I think Ryan Blaney is
is a favorite to win the championship. And and you know,
we kind of talked about it going into the New
Hampshire race last week. Joey Logano went there, did the
big tire test. They were super fast at that tire test.
As we predicted on your show last week they would
be very fast.
Speaker 6 (29:25):
But you know, Blaney took a lot of.
Speaker 11 (29:27):
Help from the twenty two and really kind of honed
in on what they wanted to do set up wise,
and man, they.
Speaker 8 (29:33):
Were so fast it was crazy at New Hampshire.
Speaker 11 (29:37):
So same tire, same arrow package, samed everything that's going
to Phoenix in five weeks. And you got to believe
that once again Team Penskey's going to be the favorite.
And if I had to pick one, I would say
Ryan Blaney is the guy to beat, you know, because
Blaney will be quick again at Kansas, he'll be decent
at the roval.
Speaker 6 (29:55):
And I think as long as they.
Speaker 8 (29:57):
Can get to Phoenix in the championship, I think he's gonna.
Speaker 6 (30:01):
Be the guy to meet for the championship.
Speaker 11 (30:03):
Question is can Joey Logano get there with him? Because
Joey Logano clearly had you know, close to on par
speed with the twelve, not quite as good on the
long run. But I tell you what, in the championship moment,
you know, you give me a driver and give.
Speaker 6 (30:18):
Me a team.
Speaker 11 (30:19):
I would take the twenty two team Paul Wolf Joey
Logano almost every time because they have an ability to
step up in those big moments.
Speaker 6 (30:27):
I don't know what it is or why it is,
but they can do it.
Speaker 11 (30:30):
And I tell you what, if they're in the championship
for that's gonna be a heck of a battle whoever's
in it, but those two, if they're both in it,
it's gonna be.
Speaker 6 (30:37):
Fun to watch.
Speaker 11 (30:37):
Well.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
Team Penske had a great weekend, probably a pleasant Monday meeting.
Joe Gibbs Racing, maybe not so much. Maybe a little tense, right,
Denny Hamlin Tdy Gibbs. I mean, there aren't many guys
who could get away with wrecking the boss's grandson. But
have they kissed and made up? What have you heard
from their other performance meeting on Monday?
Speaker 8 (30:53):
Yeah, I don't know if that's gonna happen.
Speaker 11 (30:55):
I mean, listen, I mean, I think Ty's a young
driver and has a lot of ambit and then he's
got two more years and after this year at Gibbs
and and Ty knows that, And I think Ty feels
like he's trying to win his first race and he
doesn't know you know, Christopher Bell or or Chase Risco
or Denny Hamlin really anything. He's out there to win
(31:16):
races too, And I don't know.
Speaker 6 (31:18):
That anything's really going to change that.
Speaker 11 (31:20):
And I think, you know, so I don't know where
that goes, honestly, and to be very truthful, I don't
think anything happens on the track or or you know,
with between.
Speaker 8 (31:31):
These guys, nothing's going to happen.
Speaker 6 (31:32):
I mean, but will they give each other a room?
Speaker 8 (31:36):
Will they help each other out? You know, we saw
that with Team Penske, right, I mean, I know Josh
Berry's now.
Speaker 11 (31:41):
Out of the playoffs, but Josh Berry race Ryan Blaney's
very kindly Sunday. He could have pushed the issue at
New Hampshire and probably could have put him in a
bad spot.
Speaker 6 (31:50):
And maybe he won the race.
Speaker 11 (31:51):
Right, he's still in the playoffs, Maybe he does that,
But I just don't think that team Penske.
Speaker 6 (31:56):
Operates that way because I've.
Speaker 11 (31:58):
Been around Roger Penske a lot of year, and his
whole thing is, hey, race each other hard, do not
touch each other, no matter what. And then he didn't
mean to get in to tie. He just just the
way that happened.
Speaker 6 (32:09):
It didn't work out for either one of them, and I.
Speaker 11 (32:11):
Just don't know how that gets resolved. You know, maybe
there's some off season conversations, but I think as they
operate for now, I think it will kind of be.
Speaker 6 (32:20):
Every man for himself to some extent, and we'll just
see where that goes.
Speaker 11 (32:24):
And but I doubt you see anything happen on track
from what happened Sunday in Newham.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
All Right, Marty, last thing, We'll let you go talk
to Bubba Wallace on the show yesterday. We know he's
hoping to rediscover some magic at Kansas, he's won there before.
But who else are you keeping an eye on and
what are the key factors in this race?
Speaker 9 (32:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (32:40):
I think this is a big weekend for Hendrick Motorsports.
We've talked a lot about them in the playoffs. They
have not been spectacular. They had flashes of speed. Obviously
Chase Elliott with another top five finish after starting in
the back. I think they have you know, they've kind
of shown, hey, we've gotten better at the flat you
know tracks just go to all of them and Phoenix,
(33:01):
but I think Kansas has been their playground lates and
Kyle Larson dominated in the spring. I could argue Chase
Elliott had the second best car and wound up in
the top ten. So this is a big weekend for
Hendrick to kind of re establish themselves and say, hey,
we're still in this. We don't forget about us, because
they've kind of been the forgotten group in this whole
playoff run and to the twenty three to.
Speaker 8 (33:23):
Eleven point man, they really need.
Speaker 6 (33:24):
A good run. Both Tyler Redick and Bubba.
Speaker 11 (33:26):
Did not have surprisingly did not have good New Hampshire runs.
Speaker 6 (33:31):
And I know you mentioned how they've won.
Speaker 11 (33:32):
Before kV at Kansas, but they haven't not been good in.
Speaker 6 (33:36):
This next gen car at Kansas, and it's just not
been good the last couple of years.
Speaker 11 (33:40):
So they've got to rediscover some magic because I haven't
seen the speed out of that group to do something
miraculous at the robals.
Speaker 6 (33:47):
So they both need a very solid day. But I
think this is a This is a massive.
Speaker 11 (33:51):
Swing point for Hendrick Motorsports in the playoffs if they
want to step up, get themselves in the championship conversation
and need to start this weekend.
Speaker 3 (33:59):
Brother, I appreciate you have fun out there. We will
be watching this weekend.
Speaker 6 (34:02):
Have fun him.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
Marty Snyder, NBC Sports Turner, Amazon NASCAR Studio host reporter
with us each and every Friday on the Hotline this
week from Kansas. Ahead of the race on Sunday seven
oh four five, seven ninety six ten, someone had pointed
out that us it was Jeff Gluck, that the cooler
weather at Kansas had made for more competitive pack racing.
Tight ret but I think it's supposed to be fairly
(34:25):
hot in Kansas this weekend based on what I saw
so well. Still, the racing there has just been a
fantastic It's been so car Yeah, really has been. Can't
say that about a lot of places, but in Kansas
it's been good. Let's go to flounder on the headlines.
Hold on, oh, I got the what did you say bad?
That's okay, now we'll do that later in the show.
How about that let's go to you give me a
thumbs up and I'll get We'll do a Mulligan on
(34:46):
there we go, all.
Speaker 5 (34:49):
Right, speaking to Mulligan's, let's update you on what is
going on at Bethpage Black as we speak right now,
there are two pairings today in four ball that are
basically over as of right now. That would be Justin
Thomas and Cam Young five up through twelve on Rasmus
Hoyguard and Ludwig Oberg. So they look like they're gonna
(35:11):
win one for the United States. Meanwhile, Sepstraca and John
Rohm look like they're gonna win one for the Europeans.
They are three up over Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spahn
who have not been able to get it going. Meanwhile,
there are two that still look like they are up
in the air right now, Rory McElroy and Shane Lowry
one up on Patrick Kntley and Sam Burns through twelve
and all square between Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood and
(35:34):
Bryson D.
Speaker 3 (35:35):
Chambeau and Ben Griffin.
Speaker 5 (35:37):
Those you can see, of course on I believe it's
on NBC right now along with the USA network if
you want.
Speaker 3 (35:44):
To catch it there you go, we'll come back. We'll
tell you who bought out. We'll take some phone calls.
Apparently Steeler Nate's been waiting to tell us all about
how UVA is gonna beat Florida State tonight. We'll take
that phone call, among others. Sports Radio ninety two to
seven wfn Z.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
You listening, city, Get on your feet, Hello, good protection
ths of the year Zone.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
Can you get to the buck?
Speaker 1 (36:17):
He's got good coming on the can't back to us
running into the area.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
It'll pass toward the oprights for Pope. It's time for
who balled out? Powered by high Performance real Estate Advisors
and the biggest dad gumballer of them all, Thomas L.
Speaker 6 (36:45):
Rod.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
Go to high Performance real Estate dot com and they'll
see you. Yes, you at the closing table. Flounder, what'd
you bring for the people?
Speaker 5 (36:51):
All right, I'll go with Justin Thomas and Cam Young.
They just actually finished up their match six and five.
They end up winning, So that is a big point
for the Americans. Now we need some comebacks here because,
as I mentioned, as we went to break, it was
all square between Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. Now they
are one up over Bryson d Chambeau and Ben Griffin.
(37:13):
So we need some comebacks here, guys, come on usday,
let's go.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Are you a believer in ECU? After last night twenty
eight to six, they pound the Army Black Knights twenty
eight to six. Caten Houser, the Pirate quarterback, three total touchdowns,
two through the air, one on the ground, threw for
two hundred and fifty one yards last night on fifteen
of twenty two passing and again they run away from Army.
(37:37):
Army didn't score until I believe late in the third
quarter in that game last night. And ECU, after a
rather ugly result against BYU the week prior, gets a
nice win ahead of next Thursday night showdown against John
Sumral and Tulane. Caten Houser and ECU bawling out. Is
that a win by the way for ECU fans that
makes you believe again, makes you want to believe, Not
that you necessarily bailed on the team, but you know,
(38:00):
after you got housed at home by BYU, felt like
a litmus test game. You didn't pass the test, but
you know you look good against Army and the follow up.
So I mean, how Jos should he see U fans
feel I think they should feel good. I mean the
thing about the BYU game, I get it was at
home and you were hoping to be more competitive, but
that's a Big twelve team. That's a team that I
think is showing you that, even though they lost Jake Retzlof,
(38:22):
they are going to be incredibly competitive, yes, in that
Big twelve this year. So I don't think there's any
shame in losing that game the way that they lost it.
I think now you can turn your focus to the
American and you look around at the American Conference. How
many legitimate teams are there in the American Conference? Besides you, right,
there aren't many. One of them you play next week.
Speaker 5 (38:43):
So I think they've got a good chance to be
very competitive in this commerce.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
I agree it's early yet, but they're one of just
four teams in the American that has a conference win
right now. Navy's atop the conference at two to zero
with the two and oh at the moment in conference
three and zero overall. North Texas off to a great start.
They're four and oh one to oher inc conference. And
then how about Scott abel and the Rice Owls. We
just saw them here in Charlotte last week. They've got
a conference win as well over Charlotte, so ECU's there
(39:08):
in the mix. But next week is a massive test
against Tulane. So tip of the cap early to ECU
for a big win last night. Let's take a phone
call here. We got a big game tonight in the ACC.
Once upon a time, back in nineteen ninety five, Mike
grow Son of Algro and the Virginia Cavaliers knocked off
the number one team of the country and Bobby Bowden
and Florida State. And tonight, Florida State's not number one,
(39:29):
but the number eight. And on a Friday night, Virginia,
which is off to a great start offensively three and
one overall, one play away from being four and zero,
losing to NC State in overtime. A lot of folks
think that UVA is a sexy pick for an upset tonight.
Steeler Nate seems to think that's the case. Steeler Nate,
what's going.
Speaker 12 (39:46):
On, buddy, Hey man, it's all good. Thank you for
taking my call. You all say upset, and I'm like, man,
we're playing with house money. This is going to be
one of Tony Elliott's sign that you wins in two
thousand we should have had as the state and as
far as our defense sucking, yeah, they're.
Speaker 9 (40:05):
Not that great.
Speaker 12 (40:06):
But this college football, and man, I like our chances.
And I said it to y'all before it's fandom. You
either go big or go home. Yeah, I see us
winning by at least of it.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
Woo Look, dang, how about that? Dangn So let me
ask you this. I love the unbridled passion, enthusiasm, the
belief in your team. You know, I'm just I mean,
I guess, well, I'm not objective. I root for Virginia Tech,
so I guess I'm not objective at all when it
comes to UVA. But my concern for y'all in that
game is can you match up in the trenches? You
know what I mean? Can you match up with them
for four quarters in the trenches.
Speaker 12 (40:37):
I get what you're saying, but I believe that if
our offense moves the ball and they don't match our
scorer and the pressure is on them not us.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
Well that's one way to look at it. Thank you, Nate.
I hope you're doing well, brother. Good to hear from you. Yeah,
I mean, I don't is the pressure on them. I
don't know if the pressure's on them, It's.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
Going to depend on what they do offensively in this game.
I'm interested to see how much the Castellanos injury means.
Does that limit him in this game, because if it does,
then I do think that there is a chance. I mean,
he is a guy that wins a lot of games
with his legs. His mobility is really what makes him dangerous.
(41:16):
I don't know if he's a guy that's gonna be
able to necessarily win from the pocket consistently. So if
I'm Virginia, that's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying
to limit his legs, make him have to beat you
from the pocket, and let's see if this is a
team that really can carry over some of that magic
that they had against Alabama, because I mean, Alabama was
a team that I don't think was expecting much of
(41:37):
a fight from Florida State. They thought Florida State was
going to be a team that rolled over, yes, and
when it didn't happen, they were a bit shocked. Florida
State's gonna know, or Virginia is gonna know, Florida State
is gonna come out ready for this game. I think
they're gonna be ready for this matchup at home, and
what is one of the bigger matchups they've had there
in a while.
Speaker 3 (41:55):
So it's it's gonna be a really great game. And
a weird thing to say. Still, the ACC available report
lists Thomas Castellanos as probable for tonight's game. Okay, it's
still very strange that we have ACC injury reports or
injury reports of any kind.
Speaker 2 (42:08):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (42:09):
I'm going to be able to finally find out about
my players that are hurt that I haven't been able
to find.
Speaker 3 (42:13):
Out about before. I've got no issue with it, but
it's still strange that we have that at all. Also
worth noting Thomas Castellanos his passing numbers on the year,
twenty seven of thirty eight for five hundred and ninety
four yards and three touchdowns. I mean that's like a
twenty seven of thirty eight. That sounds like a single game.
Not the yardage, but twenty seven. Yes, they want to
run the football. That's who they're going to be tonight.
(42:33):
Ken Virginia Danity. Ken Virginia win in the trenches tonight
is the big question. All Right, we'll talk more about
some of this in the five o'clock hour. We do
have to get back to the best audio in sports
as well. But when we return, it is time for
Nate Wimberley to take it like a man. The Atlanta
the Georgia native, i should say, has been here in
the Queens City covering all things Charlotte professional sports and
(42:54):
doing it well. I might add he's a good friend
of the show, Love Nate to death, but he said,
Georgia guy, and he's a Flcons fan, and he felt
pretty good about the Falcons against the Panthers last Sunday,
and he will join us in studio nex Sports Radio
ninety two to seven wfn Z
