We got Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. I
undersold him it's not two decades, it's three decades on
the job covering the Tampa Bay Bucks. Rick Stroud is
back in twenty minutes. Roman Harper back at five o'clock
as we talk a lot of football. Jeremy sitting me

(00:54):
a text too real quick, he said, KB, maybe today's
not the best day for this, but I'll let you decide.
With the Chris miss holiday coming up, what is the
worst Christmas tradition? The tradition you think needs to go away? Oh,
I don't know, if I don't know, if I want
to be grench here on a Wednesday, the worst Christmas tradition, Jeremy,

(01:15):
interesting question. I'm gonna go family photos in matching pajamas?
How about that spoke? Did did uh have Mark and
Beth ever put you and your brother in matching pajamas
for Christmas photos?

Speaker 4 (01:27):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (01:28):
How'd you feel about it? You were a kid or
were you a grown man just out of high school? Okay,
all right, I probably hurt some feelings on that one.

Speaker 5 (01:38):
My bad.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yeah, I'm just got a pajamas.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
I'm not a pajamas guy. I don't want to wear pajamas.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
I'm not too so I wasn't the biggest fan of it.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Does that make me a Grench?

Speaker 4 (01:47):
No? Because now.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
I'm not judging, like I'm not trying to make anybody
feel bad. I just I always look at these photos
of like grown families in matching pajamas, and I'm like, God,
I'd hate that. I'd he's so mad if my wife
or my mom tried to like, hey, guys, we're all
gonna buy it. And I'm sure they're expensive pajamas too.
Maybe not all the time, but it's like everybody's gonna
buy these sixty eight dollars pajamas so that we can
take you know, family photos in this weird locale and

(02:13):
you know, do these awkward poses and yeah, just matching
pajamas that or ELF, I mean elf on a shelf
is coming in a lot right now. I've never done it.
I don't know the whole concept of elf on a
shelf's kind of weird to me.

Speaker 6 (02:25):
Uh, my parents did it for holts. Yeah, I don't
hate it. I don't have any problem with it.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
But it's like, shouldn't just being on Santa's No, I
guess it's all tied in.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
I don't know it is.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
It is all tied in because the Elves are the spies, right, Yes,
it's about being on Santa's naughty list and the Elves
are watching and then he rats you out.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
He's a snitch to Santa.

Speaker 6 (02:43):
Yeah, and you know when you misbehave to parents are like,
look the elk's look, and he's gonna tell Santa what
once you go to bed?

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Isn't that teaching your kid to snitch?

Speaker 7 (02:50):
Though?

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Or No, are you developing a snitch with elf on
a shelf?

Speaker 6 (02:56):
I don't think you are, because you made it known
that it's their job. Yeah, being a snitch is not
a job. It's not a job.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
It's not one you should be paid for, right, I
guess unless the FBI is paying you, you know, paid
informant for a thing. Right, That's all I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
Yeah, here's one.

Speaker 6 (03:13):
Yeah, twenty four hour stream of a Christmas Story on
T and T every year.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Really that's your thing, Like you hate it.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Here's the thing. I don't hate the movie.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Okay, I think it's a pretty good movie.

Speaker 6 (03:27):
But grow up hearing that that's the best, that's the
gold standard.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
If that's not it, If that's not the gold standard
for Christmas movie, then what is Christmas vacation?

Speaker 3 (03:37):
That's a good one. I mean, I think you could
rightly debate that.

Speaker 6 (03:42):
I'd rather watch five Christmas movies that before I see
a Christmas Story at least.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Well, that's because you're mad that you're over exposed to
it that they play it for twenty four hours straight.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
See.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
I like that tradition, one channel playing that movie over
and over and over. That doesn't bother me on Christmas
Day because you know, it's supposed to be about family,
you know, opening up presents under the tree, spending time
with the kids, you know, them having it on for
twenty four hours. I kind of like that tradition, but
I also grew up really loving that movie. Now i'd
be lying to you if I said that I still

(04:12):
buckle up and watch it start to finish every single
year the same way that I used to. But I
kind of take comfort in it just being on as
a tradition.

Speaker 6 (04:21):
The rewatchability is not as good as like Chris Christmas
Vacation or It's a Wonderful Life, which, by the way, yeah,
I don't.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
Know if you saw this.

Speaker 6 (04:29):
There's apparently a biopic coming out next year with for
Jimmy Stewart.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
What it looks so bad? Really, it looks like someone
said it best.

Speaker 6 (04:40):
It looks like a Ferty rock bit where to cut
to where it's over the top, ridiculous. You know how
people can get over the top with you, Jimmy Stewart accents.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Okay, they do that.

Speaker 6 (04:53):
Oh okay, but it's an actual movie, okay for Jimmy Stewart.
A biopick on Jimmy Stewart. Okay, sorry, I'm looking down.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
There's a lot.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
There's an absolute brawl taking place on the text line
over the movie situation. Woody from Stanley says a Christmas
story is the Christmas movie, but the very next Texter
was like, it's awful, awful movie, definitely on the mount
rushmore of most overrated movies now listen. I like it,
but I am kind of more of a Home Alone guy.
Like that was my era of Christmas movie both the

(05:22):
first two. Nothing else counts it. It's like major league.
It's the first two and then nothing else that else
exists lfel fail filth. Nothing else exists after that, nothing
else like the first two happened. I'm grateful for those,
and then I ignore everything else that happened in that
series after the second one.

Speaker 6 (05:39):
I will say, though, I recently looked up Home Alone
three just to see who is in the cast.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
Apparently the sister was Scarlett Johansson.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
I remember that.

Speaker 8 (05:47):
No.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
I remember watching that movie for the first time years
after it came out, just to see and just being
so disgusted by it.

Speaker 9 (05:52):
One.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
I've seen the third one. Yeah, I've seen the third one.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
It's bad. I hated it real quick.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
I did get a text someone said, KB, you definitely
hurt my feeling. You definitely hurt my feelings.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
KB.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
I love Family Picture Day. I picked out the PJS
this year My intent was not to hurt your feelings.
I'm sorry, Okay, it's coming from a personal place of
I don't ever want to be in footy pajamas ever, ever, ever, ever,
ever in my life, unless it's under like hunting gear
and I'm trying to stay warm in the woods.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
I hate pajamas.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
I don't want to pajamas.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
It's the pajama's part of it.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Like, first of all, my wife would tell you I
don't like family photos to begin with, because I just
I'm not a pictures guy or men, but I do
it or men in general. But I do it for
my kids so that when I'm old and they're out
doing their own thing, I can look back and say, oh, man,
I used to be handsome and my kids were cute.
So I do it for her. But I don't like
the idea of pajamas. Just gives me insane anxiety. So anyway,
seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten, hit us

(06:47):
up on the FanDuel text line, let me.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Go to smoke with the best audio in sports.

Speaker 10 (06:52):
What did you say?

Speaker 5 (06:53):
You?

Speaker 4 (06:54):
What?

Speaker 11 (06:54):
What did you say?

Speaker 12 (06:55):
Hold?

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Wait a minute?

Speaker 4 (06:57):
Send me right.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
What I mean by that is.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Hi, what you got?

Speaker 4 (07:03):
Diehard? Has officially entered.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
I'm not doing this this year, not doing it.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
All right anyway.

Speaker 6 (07:09):
So unfortunately, the injury report for the Carolina Panthers came
out within the last two hours and there are quite
a few names on there. Teddor Or McMillan was one,
but it looks like tendor Ort McMillan is strictly day
to day. But on the otter hand Ikwanu was on
the injury report. He is day to day as well,
and his seems a little bit more concerning as during

(07:33):
his meeting with the media outside his locker, he was
being a lot more honest. And I'll be honest with you,
it doesn't really sound that great for the remainder of
the year.

Speaker 12 (07:41):
Kyle.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
When did start bothering you during the game?

Speaker 11 (07:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (07:49):
Just was it before halftime? Well before after? Okay? So
how do you how do you.

Speaker 6 (07:57):
Kind of weigh the pains wondering if it's potentially your liability.

Speaker 9 (08:02):
When I mean that's kind of something out of work
through you know, throughout the week, you know, kind of
answering that sort of questions, and you know, I just
trust my trainee staff and trust you know, everybody that's
out there and helping them trying to protect me.

Speaker 6 (08:14):
On the flip side of that, how do you wait
the pain versus knowing the Sundays and essentially a playoff game.

Speaker 9 (08:20):
Yeah, there's all you know, the fact that is they
go into my decision that uh, you know, ultimately I'll
have to make. Yeah I did.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
That's observely good.

Speaker 9 (08:29):
Shoot, I mean it was an the Mariah to say
about that one. And you share what's going on. Uh,
And I'm gonna keep you know, that sort of stuff
in the house. But you know, like I said before,
I just cheated my sub day to day right now,
and you impacting I don't want to you know me,
So maybe the information will come out later on.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
But yeah, like I said, I'm trying to keep it
as bright.

Speaker 9 (08:51):
As I can. You said, well before halftime, so you
played the majority of the game pretty banged up, A
little banged up.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, okay, just me Like I'm trying not to catastrophize
this in my head, but that sounds bad, right, Yeah,
Like he might not play on Sunday, Yeah, meaning yosh
Nijman is gonna start at left tackle.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
Yeah, and he's definitely better on the right side.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Oh man, listen, I realized that, and there's a whole
promo running of me calling out the Ikey sack that
he gave up to Chase Young. But I think overall
is that Ikey's had a good.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Year that stinks.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Now he hasn't said he's not playing, so I got
to I don't want to put words in his mouth.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
And it seems like he's gonna grit it out.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
It sounds like he's gonna try and maybe that's the
reason he gave up the sack late in the game.
I mean, it was a straight up bull rush. Ikey's
a strong dude. Not Chase Young is too, but Ikey's
one of the biggest people I've ever been.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
Around in my life.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
That's really concerning, really really concerning, no matter how you
slice it, even if you're one of these people that
still I want to kick Icky inside and make him
a guard who that's really bad news had an MRI
doesn't want to talk about what it is. Hurt Early
in the game, you know, he's got a decision to
make about whether or not he could play. It sounds
to me like he's really hurt and he really wants

(10:16):
to try to play, And it sounds like they might
let him try to play.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
And that's that's putting a lot of money onto the line.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Yeah too, It is it is man that stinks. What
else you got?

Speaker 4 (10:27):
All right?

Speaker 6 (10:28):
Well, speaking of another situation we haven't talked about this
last week, Joe Burrow had an interesting press conference where
he was talking about he doesn't want to play football
if he's not gonna have fun anymore, and then the
Bengals got shut out for the first time under Joe Burrow,
officially eliminated from playoff contention, and during his ladies' latest
meeting with the media earlier today, they asked him, mate,

(10:48):
are you gonna pull in Andrew Luck essentially and gonna
retire after this year?

Speaker 1 (10:54):
In your mind when you're not a quarterback of the
Bengals next year?

Speaker 3 (10:58):
I couldn't.

Speaker 9 (10:58):
I couldn't.

Speaker 13 (10:59):
I can't see that.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
No, did you ever both thought about the possibility of
not being the quarterback.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
Here during your career?

Speaker 4 (11:06):
Or you think about a lot of things, And.

Speaker 6 (11:10):
When you look at quarterbacks over the course of their time,
great ones, Hayden Brady and you kind of have to
understand that you never know.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
What this legal bringing. What did you learn from watching
how their career is.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
On the folded.

Speaker 8 (11:24):
Yeah, a lot of crazy things happen every year. Michael
Parsons got traded right before right before the season. I
think this year that is a something I hadn't seen
in a long time in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (11:42):
So crazy things gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
What is with this guy? What's going on with Joe?

Speaker 2 (11:48):
He has admitted publicly that he's frustrated with things, both
on and off.

Speaker 6 (11:52):
The field, and I think Jamar is even Jamar Chase,
who's been with him since college, has been like, what's
what's up, buddy?

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Okay?

Speaker 2 (11:59):
Yeah, I saw that reaction the other day too, that
answer about have you ever envisioned yourself playing elsewhere in
your career? Well, you think about a lot of things.
That was interesting.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
I get it.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
He's frustrated because he has to be damn near perfect
for them to win. They have no semblance of a defense.
He had two turnovers I believe last time out, and
when he's not perfect, they have no chance of winning.

Speaker 4 (12:22):
Oh, by the way, you have a no offensive line too.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
But man, this dude's gotten really really melodramatic and cryptic
and like it's I don't know. Sometimes guys are really
good at toying with the media and putting things out
there they want out there, and sometimes just messing with everybody.
But it's hard not to listen to him recently and
think he wants out of Cincinnati.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
Right.

Speaker 6 (12:45):
Well, the only there was someone there to warn him
before entering the NFL al waight, there was Carson Palmer. Yeah,
Harson Palmer literally said don't go to Cincinnati because this
will happen.

Speaker 4 (12:56):
Geez, because Mike Brown's still the owner.

Speaker 3 (12:59):
That's why. All right, in the interest of time, what
else you got?

Speaker 4 (13:02):
All right?

Speaker 6 (13:02):
We end in the NBA's Yesterday was the NBA Cup
Championship game between the Spurs and Knicks. The Knicks one,
but Adam Silver kind of had a State of the
NBA address, and of course what was asked was the
Terry Rozier situation with the Miami Heat, and specifically a
is Mimi going to get that pick back? If the
Hornets knew about Terry Rozier situation before training him to Miami.

Speaker 11 (13:25):
In terms of Miami, you know, this is an unprecedented situation,
and I think I'm incredibly sympathetic to the Heat and
to their fans, but I think, you know, we're we're
going to try to work something through, work this out
with them, but there's no there's no obvious solution here.
I would just say that, you know, there's there's no
doubt at the moment they have a player that can

(13:48):
perform services for them. And you know, and and as
to the draft pick they conveyed, you know, obviously he
hasn't been convicted of anything yet either. But this is
an unfortunate circumstance. But you know, sometimes there's these unique
events and maybe sometimes you know, they require unique solutions.

(14:08):
So we'll be looking at this with the Heat and
the other teams in the league and see if there's
any satisfactory relief.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Any satisfactory relief, just just a refresher. Hornets got the
Hornets in the trade sent Terry Rozier to the Heat.
They got Kyle Lowry, Hornets Legend, and a twenty twenty
seven first round pick that is top sixteen protected. If
it doesn't convey in twenty seven, it would become an
unprotected twenty twenty eight first round pick. The Heat have
said they weren't aware of the NBA's gambling inquiry into

(14:36):
Rogier when they acquired him, while the Hornets have not
commented on it publicly. Bottom line is the NBA let
this go through. And I don't believe for a second
the NBA didn't know what was going on. So I
smoke hats the heat.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
I get it.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
Nobody around here really likes the heat. I understand their
position on this now. I don't think the horners should
have to pay a damn thing. If the NBA was
fine with the trade, then that's that. If you want
to compensate the heat, fine, you go right ahead. You
want to get an extra pick at the end of
the first round whatever, I'd want one too if I
were them, I really would. So you want to do that,
that's fine. You want to go with some you know,

(15:08):
extraordinary circumstance calls for an extraordinary solution and do something
a little bit unprecedented to suit their hurt, fine, go
right ahead, but it better not impact the Hornets. That's
the only line in the stand for me, and I
think for most other people.

Speaker 4 (15:19):
Yeah, I guess what we also got screwed by the NBA.

Speaker 6 (15:22):
Yeah, the Lake you know about twenty thousand times, by
the way, to heat have never had to have this
happen to him. They've had their way for twenty plus years,
and I'd say this to all those people, don't get
mad about how your house was built, because last time
I checked, there was a lot of conspiracy surrounding your
first title in two thousand and six, specifically Game five

(15:44):
with the amount of times you're idle d Wade, who
you butchered a statue by the way yes or statue
of yeah, how he got to the free for a
line twenty thousand times in that game too?

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Well, listen, just that it's their issue. They can deal
with it so long as it doesn't impact the Hornets.
I don't care what the league does, and they don't
even suck right now now they don't, and again I
don't care. It's their problem. What I will say this
is if the Hornets are raising hell about this, I
don't know the NBA is commenting publicly. Maybe they do,
but it's pat Riley. So you know they're gonna go
do whatever they need to do to keep pat Riley happy.
And that's what I expect, and I think that's what

(16:19):
they'll do when we come back. Rick Stroud has covered

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Panthers and Bucks Part one, two games, final three weeks
to decide who wins the NFC South, and right now
it looks like neither team really wants to take it.
Let's talk to a guy who's covered Tampa Bay football
for a few decades, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay
Times kind enough to give us some time here on
a Wednesday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
Rick, how you been, brother? I appreciate you.

Speaker 5 (17:54):
I'm doing well.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
Thanks of course.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Just lately I've been watching Bucks games, but I've seen
what's going on. But you cover him inside out. What's
gone wrong with this team? And why does it seem
like things are falling apart?

Speaker 5 (18:08):
I mean, the the bigger answer is is, uh, you know,
they've had a ton of injuries, and I think that's
affected them throughout the season. Although you could argue that
they were better with more guys out when they started
you know, five and one. Now, some of that a
lot of that was Baker Mayfield coming down, you know,
with four last minute comeback victories, and you're not going

(18:29):
to see that every year. So they've they're they've hit
a skid. But I think overall the it's just not
very good on defense. I mean that's you know, they're
they're their hope that Hassan Redick would come in here
and and you know, be the Hassan Redick of a
few years ago did not come to pass. He's missed games,
he hasn't really produced. I think he has two and

(18:51):
a half sacks. Some of their younger players haven't developed
as they'd hoped, uh, and some guys have gotten old,
you know, like Levonte David And I think it's a
combination of a lot of things. But defensively, they've just
not really been very good. And then, you know, I
think if there's hope for the Bucks right now, it's
the fact that they are getting their guys back. When

(19:14):
I say they're guys, I mean Mike Evans, Mike Evans,
Mike Evans, Jalen McMillan, Chris Godwin and a Mecca Buco
all played for the first time together in a game,
you know, this past week. And I think, you know,
the hope for them, uh, is that that's a that's
an explosive offense with Bucky Irving, who they missed most

(19:35):
of the season as well. He's played a couple of
two or three games now and and I think as
as they continue with this group, even though the offensive
line is in hole, there's there's an opportunity there for
Baker Mayfield to put up some points. And so, you know,
you just need one more than the opponent. Right, they're
going to give up some, but but that's an explosive bunch.

(19:57):
That's going to be a handful if they can get
Baker time. And I'm anxious to see just you know,
if those guys can stay on the field together, just
what they can do.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
I'm sure you and others have asked him, but when
we found out about Baker's ac joint sprain, my first
thought was, Oh, he's he's going to be playing in
pain probably the rest of the season to at least
some extent. Have you seen it affect him so far?
How much pain week to week do you think he's
playing through?

Speaker 5 (20:21):
Well, it's got to be significant, right, and I think
it's been cumulative. You know, he started out early in
the season after the Texans game, he had to come
back there. He was you know, had a knee injury
in that game. He's carried that on with him throughout
the season. You Know, he had ah, you know, kind
of an abdominal strain midway through, and I think that

(20:42):
one was problematic in terms of his velocity and throwing
the football. And then now with the left shoulder, you know,
he's got that harnessed up a little bit. It can't
be comfortable. Certainly it affects him, and he's tried to
be very selective about when he runs or if he runs,
and that was a big part of his game early
in the season. So we'd be naive to think that,

(21:05):
you know, the way Baker plays, the amount of punishment
he takes that when you get to you know, week fourteen, fifteen, sixteen,
et cetera, that it's not limiting him in some ways.
But you know, I think all these guys are beat
up to some extent, maybe Baker more than others. And
you know, I've seen you know, you just look at
the numbers and the accuracy has dipped obviously, complete and percentage.

(21:28):
You know, started to throw you know, as many touchdowns
as interceptions, and that just wasn't the case. I think
he was like sixteen touchdowns turn receptions to start the season.
So you know, it definitely has effect that it seems
to be a pattern every year where the later the
year goes, the more beat up he is. And he's
not the biggest guy in the world. And he also

(21:49):
plays like you know, he's a fullback, so some of
that is on him, but overall, he's a warrior, and
you know he's not going to use it as an excuse,
and I don't think the Bucks will either.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
Rick Stroud, Tampa Bay Times covers the Bucks with us
here on a Wednesday afternoon. You know, I was, I
was really surprised last week with what Todd Bowles had
to say after that loss to Atlanta. And I've seen
a lot of allegations down your way of Todd Bowles
losing the locker room as a result of it. I
think our afternoon Drive sports radio counterparts down there said
exactly that yesterday, you're in the building, you're in the

(22:21):
locker room.

Speaker 3 (22:21):
Do you get the sense that that's true.

Speaker 5 (22:24):
I'll be happy to tell those guys and I know them,
that they're wrong. Okay, yeah, you know they need to
spend more time in the locker room and then they
would know there's not nice to shot. They're all friends
of mine, they or they were they they you know, listen,
players playing coaches coach and that's an old cliche, but

(22:46):
it's true, right, I think to a man, what's interesting
about that rant was No, we have not seen Todd
Bowles do it on the podium. I assure you he
does it often. In the meeting rooms. And I think
that the know more about bulls is that, well, you know,
he's on the sideline, he's classed. He has no emotion.
That's why. You know, Look, it's only whether you win

(23:08):
or you lose. Right, if you're that guy and your
your you know, winning uh and not showing much most
in your Tom Landry like right, the teams are they're cerebral,
and they're they're controlled and they're poised. Right, if you're losing,
you have no emotion. And that's why you know. The
opposite is true too. You know, if your fiery and
and your teams are winning, it's like, well, look, you know,

(23:29):
Bill Parcels, you know they're you know, they're they're they're
really like their coach. And if you're losing, you're a maniac.
You're great, Chiana, you know what I mean, you're off
the rails. The team, the team doesn't know, it has
no discipline, like so it's just whether you win or
you lose. And you know, I think that that what
Todd said. He was he was ticked off. He said it,
and he had just said the exact same thing to

(23:50):
his football team. I was a little surprised that he
dropped seven f bombs uh in public. Uh that it's
not not what we hear. It was maybe a two
or three more excessive. But you know, I think it
also kind of you know, I think what Todd was
trying to do. You know, coaches can bring you so far.

(24:11):
And you know, they had a situation in that game,
you know, third and twenty eight, right, fourth and twelve
or fourteen, whatever it was, and they'd had an injury
and Zia McCollum's out. But you got an NFL player,
Kendall Field or and you know that you're just supposed
to play, you know, play to the sticks, right like,

(24:32):
you know, just anything you tackle guys short of that marker,
the game is over and he jumps, he jumps the
running back in the backfield and they throw it over
his head for a first down. That's an unforgivable thing
to do at any level of football. In that situation,
you got to be situationally aware. And is it everybody
every play? No, but that's the kind of thing that
gets gets you beat, and it's been getting them beat,

(24:53):
especially on defense. So I understand his frustration, but you know,
maybe he's lost Kendall bieldor I don't know, maybe they should.
But at the end of the day, it's like, you know,
you can put guys in position that's installed day one, right,
Like you got to make plays. You know, It's not

(25:14):
to me, a lot of it is players, not plays.
When you get to this level and you get to
this time of the season, now, if you don't have
good enough players, let's start talking about the GM okay,
or start talking about the draft, or start talking about
the coaches that don't develop these guys. That's all fair game.
But we're into the season, and you're this late into

(25:34):
the season, there should be no mystery about what technique
you're playing right or what you're seeing on film. Everybody
should know what the hell to do and they should
be able to communicate it. So I was in the
locker room today, I've been in it before this week
on Monday, and there's nobody, you know, down in the
mouth about Todd Bowls. Do they know that if they

(25:55):
lose and lose big there could be a change coming. Yeah,
they probably figured that out, but no one's out there
making business decisions, you know, waiting for the next guy
to take over. I mean that that just hasn't happened.
I mean his team. You know, realistically, we saw what
pressure does right to Carolina in New Orleans. They had
every reason to go down there and win that game.

(26:15):
But you know what, sometimes when the expectations are now
on your side, right, sometimes when you're the hunted and
not the hunter, it's different. Now it's different, right, So
pressure does funny things to people. And you know, we'll
see these two teams are going to play each other
twice in three weeks. I think this one's got a
lot of guys with pedigree that have played in bigger

(26:36):
games than this. They've won Super Bowls and and and
they've been here before where they've you know, lost a
bunch of games and then had to rally to win
the division. I think they'll respond, but I don't think
that it's because you know, if they don't, it'll be
because Todd Bowles has lost the locker room.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
I hear you, and I'll let you go on this.
I think I can combine two questions into one because
I'm pretty sure what you and I talked after the
Panthers hired Dave connect and just kind of as a refresher,
I'd love to know what you recall about his offense
that year that really stands out to you? And I
asked that in part because yesterday we were pointing out
that there're seven and seven. There's no doubt been improvement

(27:13):
in this organization that much as obvious. They're seven and
seven in the playoff hunt. But at the same time
they're you know, twenty eighth in the NFL in points
per game at eighteen point nine. This offense is not
produced to the level that I think they hoped it would.
So what do you recall from your season covering Dave
Canalis's offense in Tampa and what do you think of
the job that he's done here?

Speaker 5 (27:35):
Well, I mean those are two different questions. I think
you know, his offense in Tampa is probably not and
I haven't seen a lot of Panther games. Admittedly I
did watch an Orleans game. Look, I would say this
about Dave. His strength is not playing calling. Okay, Now
you may not agree with that assessment, but it's true.

(27:58):
And you know, and if you ask people in this building,
and players in particular, they will tell you that. Now.
Having said all that, I know he fad fancies himself
as an offensive play caller when he got here. He
hadn't done it since Carson High School in California. Now,
you know, just because you're in the NFL and this
is what I would do. All that kick great, but

(28:19):
they didn't run. They were last in the league in rushing,
I believe when when Dave was here, and you know,
they didn't have a lot of answers at the line
of scrimmage right for the quarterback to get out of place.
I don't know if that's changed. I suspect it hadn't
changed a whole lot. But those those things will get you.
And you know what I will tell you though, and

(28:40):
I think this has happened. Baker called Dave an optimist bully,
and you guys have seen it every day, right, every
day he's mister Rogers, right, it's like, hey, guys, how's
it going. You know, it doesn't matter if you win
or lose, and that's good as long as you're the
same guy all the time. And for Baker, who was
you know, coming up being in four teams in eighteen months,
that was a hell of a thing. And I think

(29:00):
there's a great thing, you know, for your quarterback, there
no question, you know you need that positivity. Frankly, they
could use a little bit of that around Tampa right now.
But but you know, you got to put players in
the best position to succeed. And and I don't know,
I haven't watched the Panthers offense enough to know, but

(29:20):
I'm not surprised. You know, Uh, maybe they need more players.
Maybe that's part of it. Maybe the offensive line isn't great,
but they didn't have success with those of those offensive
line coaches in Tampa. And and Dave couldn't run the
ball right, and they didn't score a lot of points.
So you know, take that for what it is. I mean,
it's it's still a young program. He's still he's still

(29:42):
only in year two. I think he'll grow. I always
thought that he would be a better head coach than
a play call, you know, because a lot of the
job of the head coaches to set the tone. I
think he's done that, Carolina.

Speaker 12 (29:54):
You know.

Speaker 5 (29:56):
Now we'll see where they go from here. But he's
been good for the quarterback, getting him, you know, confident again,
getting his confidence back. And now it's just a question of,
you know, whether they can execute the plays that he calls,
and he calls him in the right order. I mean,
you know, we can all question fourth and one. You know,
why aren't you running a sneak there? You know, like

(30:17):
it did. You can do this all day. But Dave's
reputation here was, at least among some of the players
that I talked to. Great guy, very good optimist. You know,
sets the tone extremely well, not so good getting you
in and out of bad plays when when you need
to be, when you need those answers at the line

(30:37):
of scrimmage.

Speaker 2 (30:38):
Rick, appreciate the time, buddy. Happy holidays to you and yours.
We'll talk to you soon. Safe travels to Charlotte, Tim
you guys, Thanks to you. So Rick Stroud, Tampa Bay
Times with us on the hot line seven oh four
five seven ninety six ten. The text line blowing up
right now reacting to that interview. Wow, that's there's a
lot to talk about right there. Well do it when
we come back. Right now, we go to smoke on

(31:00):
the headlights.

Speaker 6 (31:04):
Great, I got a follow that all right, Well, this
sport's brought to you by bet three six'. Five so
we got an update finally on the situation that's been
going on for the last couple of. Weeks But according
To pete Hammell, and The university Of, Ohio ohio has
officially fired head Coach Brian. Smith per To, School smith
violated the terms of his employment agreement by engaging in

(31:28):
serious professional misconduct and participating in activities that reflect unfavorably
on the. University there's a reddit thread about. THIS i
didn't see the, Reddit FRED i. Did i'm not gonna
talk about it though it's out. THERE i want to
see what comes of. It but uh, yeah this one
is shrouded in public. Secrecy is that kind of? Oxymoron

(31:50):
is shrouded in. Secrecy they don't want to, talk and
nobody wants to talk about why they're firing.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
Him but, boy they're quick and. Noe we're firing this
guy with, cause get him out of. Here so you,
know Russ belt head coach is having a hard time right.
Now all, right well come, back we'll tell you who balled.
Out we'll take your phone. Calls quite an interview With
Rick stroud right. There Sports radio ninety two seven w
F Z.

Speaker 5 (32:20):
City get on your.

Speaker 4 (32:22):
Feet, hello good protection turns for the.

Speaker 7 (32:28):
Year Sign.

Speaker 6 (32:32):
Can you gut to the?

Speaker 4 (32:32):
Buck he's gotta coming? On sign back to rush running
into the. Area it'll pass to what.

Speaker 3 (32:41):
Opprates for poppy. Ot it's time for who balled?

Speaker 2 (32:55):
Out powered By High performance Real Estate advisors and the
biggest dad gumballer of them, All THOMAS. L. Rod go
to High performance Real estate Dot com and they'll see
you at the closing. Table smoke would you bring for the?

Speaker 6 (33:05):
PEOPLE i gotta go two people in The battle of
The Palmetto state last night Between clemson And South carolina
wasn't the prettiest, game but two, Guys Ace buckner And
Carter welling For clemson coming off the bench combined to
score thirty five points off the bench For clemson to
win sixty eight to sixty one over To South, carolina

(33:26):
a Game clemson had to win in order to state
above the.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
Bubble i'm Going Army, navy the game THAT i was
well kind of just at over the. WEEKEND i was
there broadcasting live On friday In baltimore seven point eight
million viewers ON, cbs becoming the most watched game ON
cbs this. Season second place Was Indiana oregon In week,
six which averaged five point five to nine million. Viewers

(33:51):
But Army, navy if you can believe, It it's funny
you if you Google Army navy ratings on the one,
tot you get stories that's, say you, know massive route
of massive, viewership best ratings on the network all year.
Long but then you get sports media watch Like Army
navy surprisingly down seventeen percent year over, year which both
are actually true here and also begs the, question is

(34:12):
CBS's largest mistake ever letting THE sec go yes and
placing The Big ten ON?

Speaker 3 (34:18):
Cbs, YES i mean it's.

Speaker 6 (34:20):
Not Even Clarry danielson won't admit to, it but that's
why he's retiring at this of course it.

Speaker 2 (34:23):
Is And i'm not A Big ten, hater but, like
the numbers aren't even. Comparable like their highest Rated Big
ten game of the year is less than half of
ESPN's highest RATED sec game this year twelve million For Alabama,
georgia ten million For Ole Miss.

Speaker 6 (34:39):
Georgia and, Look i'll take shots at THE, sec but
here's what makes THE sec. Different you know what it
means just, more it's because they pay attention to the whole. Conference,
yeah The Big. Ten they only pay attention to the
teams that they care.

Speaker 3 (34:53):
About i'm with.

Speaker 2 (34:54):
You that's who bought out let's take some phone. Calls
let's talk about what we just heard from from From
Rick stroud to The Ten. Times during the previous, segments
he kind of Roasted Dave. Canalis it was like a roast,
sandwich you. Know it was like he said some nice,
things but in the middle said That dave is not
a good play, caller never thought he'd be a good play.
Caller that he might be a good head, coach and
he's a great culture, guy and you, know the, raw

(35:15):
raw optimist bully stuff is great for the. Quarterbacks but
he never Thought dave was a good play caller and
never thought he would be a good play. Caller and
the response on the text line is. Fascinating we had
people that loved the. Interview we had people who hated the.
Interview Andrew norwell's, agent this guy sucks race And, jason
what a waste of an? Interview why take it if
you've done zero? Research somebody? Else who was the other?

(35:38):
One it Was cakillac saying so basically ALL i heard
WAS i haven't watched y'all except for last, week but
you aren't on our?

Speaker 3 (35:45):
Level DID i miss?

Speaker 2 (35:45):
Anything oh and your coach is trash, Too So we
had people that were very upset about, it but we
also had people sending in seven h four. Number that
was a great, interview very telling On. CANALIS i agree
that he needs to give up play calling and hire
a big time offensive. Coordinator eight two eight, number great.
Interview as he was, speaking my mind couldn't help but
wonder roughing the passers of fifteen yard?

Speaker 3 (36:06):
Penalties.

Speaker 2 (36:06):
CORRECT i hate to wish anything bad on, anyone so my,
apologies but the playoffs are worth a fifteen yard. PENALTY
i don't know you were having the same conversation, here
BUT i appreciate the great interview, part But i'm not
quite sure where you took it from. THERE a few
more of, These you, know this is exactly WHAT i was,
thinking you, know love that GUY Psl, sucker love that
Guy Sports guys. Show who was This Buccaneers? HOMER i

(36:27):
mean the text line blew. Up glenn said this is SCARY.
Kb so we got a wide range of reactions on
the text line to The Rick shroud. Interview let me
take a phone call or. Two will is?

Speaker 6 (36:38):
Up?

Speaker 3 (36:38):
First? Will what's going?

Speaker 12 (36:39):
On H?

Speaker 10 (36:41):
Kyle good talking to you? First the cbspis that you
just MENTIONED i think one reason their numbers are down
with The big, ten they don't get to flex the
Best big ten game talks gets the Best big ten.
Game that's part of their that's part of the problem to.
Them but the other component to me from that, interview
that was very Frustrating, kyley how long have you watch?

Speaker 5 (36:58):
Football how many?

Speaker 10 (36:59):
Years long?

Speaker 3 (36:59):
Time thirty, years thirty?

Speaker 10 (37:01):
Years why do you think that they didn't call A
qb sneak.

Speaker 5 (37:07):
On fourth and?

Speaker 2 (37:08):
One, WELL i don't have to, SAY i don't have to.
Think dave, canalisai he doesn't hold.

Speaker 3 (37:12):
On you asked me a.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
Question you asked me a. Question i'm trying to answer the.
Question Dave canalis told us the. Answer he doesn't Want
bryce at a buck ninety up in the. Mix that's
What that's what his answer.

Speaker 12 (37:21):
Was bryce is five foot five and one hundred and
eighty five.

Speaker 7 (37:24):
Pounds he's not.

Speaker 5 (37:25):
YOU i wouldn't put A qb sneak.

Speaker 7 (37:27):
With bryce on.

Speaker 12 (37:28):
Air SO i don't know where that guy may comment
on play, calling but to bring up that is the
example is what he was thinking when it was a.

Speaker 10 (37:34):
MISTAKE i don't know how you do.

Speaker 12 (37:36):
That and if you think about the players That canalis
has won seven games With he's got A rookie of
The year candidate and a. Receiver he's got A Holy
cross undrafted free agent As bryce's best. Player he has
a quarterback who is completely turned, around and an offensive
line that HE i think it's.

Speaker 10 (37:52):
Shifted maybe fifteen times this.

Speaker 7 (37:53):
SEASON i don't know how you could And rico.

Speaker 12 (37:56):
Dawbele he's Turned Rico dabble into a hot. COMMODITY i
don't know how you could possibly look at this season
and say that he has got the Mac brown optimism
only component of a. Coach obviously that's, important but you
can't discount his play calling this.

Speaker 2 (38:10):
Year, okay, LISTEN i appreciate the phone. Call bryce is
not five to. Five bryce is five to. Ten let's
be fair to the diminutive. One bryce has run successfully
a quarterback sneak in this.

Speaker 3 (38:21):
League it can be, done you.

Speaker 2 (38:23):
Know the next Point i'll make again is that there
are plenty of teams who are running those short yardage
plays with tight. ENDS i, Mean Taysom hill's been doing
it In New orleans for years. Now so even if
you don't want to run your, quarterback there are ways
to do it that don't involve turning and handing the
ball off three yards.

Speaker 3 (38:37):
Deep, OKAY i get.

Speaker 7 (38:38):
It you Like Dave.

Speaker 2 (38:39):
CANALIS i Think dave's ANOTHER i Think dave's done a good.
JOB i really. Do BUT i don't think it's unfair
to ask questions about play calling or ask questions why
this offense from a points per game standpoint has regressed
from twenty point one points per game last year to
eighteen point nine points per game this. Year, yes wins
and losses are all that, matters but those numbers for
an offensive minded head coach are worth. EXAMINING i don't

(39:01):
think people are out of bounds for pointing that. Out
let's go To CAROLINA j, Next, jay what's going?

Speaker 10 (39:05):
ON i was going?

Speaker 1 (39:07):
On man a.

Speaker 5 (39:08):
MAN i Think Rick.

Speaker 13 (39:10):
STRODE i think his his takes spoke.

Speaker 5 (39:14):
Volumes.

Speaker 13 (39:14):
MAN i think it exactly told us what we knew
but we didn't know, before what they knew before and
what we're finding. Out and my thing is he's spot,
on even down to the Mister rogers like he is spot.
On but my, thing my hope is That canalis can

(39:35):
take that off that that tag and take it off
of him and become that clever play caller or give
up the play, calling just like you know they said
give it up, man and andded that Raw Rod Tom
landry guy that that's always glass half. Full but we
need just like you said that line of, scrimmage we

(39:57):
need some changes going. On and With, bryce what kind
of coach says that they're not going to run their
quarterback in the fourth and one win to play before
you just ran them on a third and. ONE i
just it just doesn't make any. Sense his sake was
final on. Man i'll take the rest off to.

Speaker 3 (40:14):
IT i appreciate.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
IT i thought it was telling THAT rg, three who
has played the position and was not a huge guy,
himself is on the broadcast, saying please run a quarterback sneak,
Here please run a quarterback sneak. Here you could push
him so long as the tush push is an outlawed
you could push the. Kid So cuba could have pushed.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
HIM i, mean you.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
Listen if you don't want to get him folded, up that's.
Fine BUT i think you can be a little bit more.
CREATIVE i would expect my offensive minded head coach to
be a little bit more creative than what we've.

Speaker 3 (40:39):
Seen just in that. POSITION i ain't mad at. HIM
i don't want him.

Speaker 2 (40:41):
FIRED i don't think he's a fraud LIKE i Think
dave's done a really good job rebuilding the.

Speaker 3 (40:46):
Culture, okay he's a culture. Guy they have a. CULTURE
i Like. Dave is he? Perfect, no he knows. That
we all know. That but it's okay to criticize. Things
AND i thought that.

Speaker 2 (40:56):
AGAIN rg three's initial reaction of please run the sneak.
Here we're all thinking, it or at the very least
have a better. Option then just turn and hand it,
off you, know three yards Deep. Jersey frank is up, Next,
frank what's going?

Speaker 7 (41:06):
On first of, All Merry christmas number. TWO i was
thinking WHAT i wanted to tell. You, FIRST i Think
National LAMPOON'S Criti vacation in the Movie scrooged are the
two Best christmas. Movies and Then Christmas story number. THREE
i wanted to thank you yesterday what you said about
that coach From michigan his girlfriend that she was the.
VICTIM i was literally applauding you when you were saying,

(41:27):
that because. Nothing you don't care what you, say but
you speak the truth every. Day and that's why one
of the REASONS i love you AND i love listening
to you because you were speaking the. Truth she wasn't no.

Speaker 4 (41:36):
Victim she knew what she was.

Speaker 7 (41:38):
Doing so appreciate you saying that that's a big. Deal
but you're, Right canalist needs to become. MORE i don't
know it just if he's worried about, him you, know
if he's not worried About, hey he's, small then why
run him at? ALL i, mean like the club performing
you said it was okay that he ran the play,
before and then like you, said we're gonna let the

(41:59):
guy like Does saints don't know that three yards in
the back of that that place. Coming he's becoming too
predictable because he's too safe. Sometimes So i'm afraid to
even talk about it BECAUSE i want him to win
so bad On, Sunday that's WHY i was hesitating even calling.
You thanksgi for what you said. Yesterday it was just
that man, thing AND i appreciate what you, said thank,
you but.

Speaker 3 (42:19):
NO i appreciate it if you missed.

Speaker 2 (42:20):
It ALL i said yesterday Was i'm really tired of
all these people covering The Michigan sharon Story sharon more,
story referring to the woman as the. Victim she's thirty
two years. Old she wasn't some nineteen year, old impressionable
subordinate who was. NOW i, mean she's a grown ass
woman who played a major part in wrecking a program
and wrecking of. Family So i'm just tired of people
referring to her as a victim all the. Time at
the end of, it maybe the home invasion, part, FINE

(42:42):
i get that that's not a. Problem but like the
rest of these people who have continuously referred to her
as a, VICTIM i find to be completely. Objectionable all,
right we do, this we come back our number, Three,
well take more of your phone. Calls Roman harper needs
to push back twenty five. Minutes he's finishing up around
of golf and we need his full. Attention Roman harper's
going to push back to five twenty. Five i'll take

(43:02):
your phone. Calls on the other, Side Rick stroud just
came in here and laid some pretty serious criticism at
the feet Of Dave. Canalis we'll keep talking about, it we'll.
