Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet Today Power.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Number two Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z
shows already flying by kb Flounder Colin Hoggard here on
site for the ACC kickoff Smoke back at home in
the wfn Z Chandler Volta Studios. Still waiting on Jeff Brahm,
head football coach of Louisville, to stop by at some point,
not quite sure what's going on there. When he does,

(00:50):
we'll put him on the show and we'll talk about
Louisville and them being expected to be one of the
better teams in the ACC. We also, at some point
this hour have to bring some audio into the show.
Cam Newton on his fourth and one podcast just went
after Ryan Clark, former LSU and Steelers safety, as well
as Dan Orlovsky, called them scrubs with opinions that audio

(01:14):
is going viral. It's apparently in response to Ryan Clark
calling out Cam Newton yesterday for leaving Jalen Hurts off
his list of top ten quarterbacks. And so now we
have a war of words, Cam talking about not jumping
on the fumble in the Super Bowl, all those things.
So we'll have that coming up for you just a
bit as well, and of course Panthers training camp news
coming out, a lot of that to talk about, and

(01:34):
we have to get to a bit more of the
Hornets because, let's be honest, most of the Hornets news
is going to be relegated to the back burner here
over the next several weeks with football returning and the
NBA season still a couple of months away. But got
what was it a Conka nipple speaking about, you know,
the culture of the Charlotte Hornets and talking about being

(01:54):
a part of the solution and those sorts of things.
So we got to get to that um a bit.
So apparently Jeff Brom's not coming over, so that that's
been axed from the schedule unbeknownst to me. So if
if you're a Louisville Cardinal fan out there, sorry about it.
I'm not sure what's going on, but all the things
that we had, some of the things we had planned
for today's show are apparently now off the docket.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
On some prayers to Panther bo, sorry about that. Panther bow.
We have no control over that.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
It's also a new aged ACC kickoff where you know
not to go to inside baseball here. But the conference
is more or less given up on scheduling things for us.
I don't care if they hear me say it like
I I more or less ripped them a new one
last year, and within I missed my first ACC kickoff
and I think my entire career last summer because well,
the conference is not doing things the way they used to.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
We'll put it that way.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
But apparently Jeff Brom will not be able to join
us unfortunately, so.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Suddenly a little bit lower on that team.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
I was going to ask him, I was gonna I
was going to try to get a prediction from him
on Tyler Shug's rookie year in New Orleans. I mean,
come on, man, speaking of New Orleans, what's Julian Blackman doing?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Why is that smoke?

Speaker 2 (03:01):
That's the guy you've been wanting to Carolina for a
couple of months now at the safety spot.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
He signs in New Orleans.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Now, the last time I had this kind of feeling
like why the hell did a guy sign somewhere, it
was Stefan Gilmour Minnesota last year, and it turned out
he made the right decision.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
So I don't know.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Maybe Julian Blackman knows something I don't. But how annoyed
are you smoked that Julian Blackman is now in New
Orleans Saint and not a Carolina Panther.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
In the sense that he went to a division rival.

Speaker 5 (03:26):
Yeah, kind of annoying, But I also think part of
it could be too, the fact that might be the
team that's offering him the most money, so he decided
to take it, and if he does well, he can
go sign somewhere else next year to a lot more money.
It's kind of like what we saw from the safety
market about seven eight years ago, So I wonder how
that's going to be. But yeah, I you know, I

(03:46):
kind of figured that they were not going to take him,
or take any of the safeties that they were talking
to at this point. I mean, Mike Kaye told us,
you know, Joe Person told us yesterday two days ago
about that. So I just think it was kind of
going down that road and now we know that it's
not gonna happen. But actually, speaking of the Hornets, Kyle,

(04:09):
they just made a signing for another guard. Really, yes,
this one's for a two way contract. Antonio Reeves has
signed to a two way contract for to Charlotte Hornets.
For those who are wondering, Antonio Reeves played last year
with the New Orleans Pelicans. He played forty four games,
shot thirty nine percent from behind the arc, forty five

(04:30):
percent from the field, and played in forty four games
as a second round pick. So yeah, from out of Kentucky. Yeah,
out of Kentucky. So they just got another one. So
that means someone's probably off a two way contract. And
if I had to guess, that might spell the end
for Damian Baugh here in Charlotte.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Yeah, I could see that being the case.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
All Right, Well, we'll come back to the Hornets here
in just a bit, but Panthers training camp since our
schedule has been altered here just really quickly. A lot's
been made the last twenty four hours of the fact
that Dan Morgan yesterday at his press conference really wanted
to avoid the playoff word. You know, you and I
have had this conversation recently actually about Jeff Peterson and

(05:11):
the Hornets and the fact that you know, they didn't
really want to see it talk about the playoffs. I
I don't know, smoke Like I I'm not. I'm certainly
not upset about it. I guess I kind of failed
to understand why it's so scary to say out loud
that our goal is to make the playoffs. Like, I
don't know, it seems to be a belief. And I

(05:31):
heard Walker say this yesterday. Maybe it was Walker, but like,
you know, the implication being that they don't want to
say playoffs because it'll be held against them later this
year if if they don't make it, right, But like,
does that matter? I don't know, Like, you're not in
year one of a rebuild. You didn't press the you know,
you didn't press the eject button this offseason, So it's

(05:53):
not like we're all under the same impression that this
team is, you know, starting from scratch, right, I don't know,
Like I think the goal most years is to make
the playoffs. I would have no problem whatsoever with Dan
Morgan saying yesterday, yeah, the goals to make the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
They didn't want to say that.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
They want to talk about the process and you know,
doing it the right way.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Nothing that I.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Disagree with, by the way, but I just don't understand why,
you know, there's this hesitance to say, yeah, we want
to make the playoffs this year, you.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Know what I mean.

Speaker 5 (06:19):
I think because you know, they don't want to get
the fan base too hyped and you don't want to
sell them too much on something that you without one
hundred percent confidence can say yeah, we can absolutely do that.
I think when they when they start saying yeah, we'll
make we can make the playoffs, I think they believe
within their heart of hearts that they will make the playoffs.
I just think as of right now, it's better to
be safe than sorry. At this point, we've seen how

(06:41):
fan bases react even when you say playoffs is a
possibility and it falls true. I mean basically every single
year with Mitch kupcheck here and Charlotte at the midway point,
people are wanting, you know, him to be fired because
he said all that stuff and it just didn't work out.
So I think that plays a part in it. And
as I said, better to be safe and sorry, Yeah,
I mean I guess, but safe from what criticism?

Speaker 4 (07:04):
Massive criticism. Yeah, but if you.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Go six and eleven this year, you're gonna be criticized anyway. Yeah,
you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
If you go seven and nine or seven and ten,
you're gonna be criticized anyway, but it's gonna be criticism
from different areas most likely at that point.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
What do you mean, how do you mean?

Speaker 5 (07:20):
Well, what I mean by that is maybe something else
is wrong with the team in the organization. Maybe there's injuries,
there's a gluttony of that, or maybe they just mishandled
certain late game scenarios. At least for Dan Morgan and
his sake, if they go seven and ten, they missed
the playoffs, and then people are mad about it. It's like, look,
you know, we made a jump from five to seven wins.
That's still an improvement. And we didn't say any I

(07:41):
didn't say anything about playoffs and being the gold this year.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
It was still developmental year. I think that's the idea.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Like I listen, I understand the theory of you know,
under promise over deliver, right, we all understand that in theory.
But like you and I have talked about this so
many times over the years, like it's the NFL, you know,
unless you are hitting the said button in a single
off season.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Jordan Gross, we talk about this all the time.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Jordan Gross was on the show a couple of years
ago and I always reference that, but like he said
it without any hesitation. He's like, yeah, you should always
be a year away in the NFL. And so it's
okay to me. If Dan says, yeah, we want to
make the playoffs, that's our goal. We're going to try
to push to make the playoffs. If you fall short,
I'm not gonna hey, play it back. He said they
wanted to make the playoffs and they didn't.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
What an idiot. He should be fine. I'm not mad
at him for that.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
I want you to want to make the play I
want to say it. You know, aj on the text
line says, no smoke, that's soft. They should believe the
roster they put together can make the playoffs and shouldn't
be scared to say it. I yeah, whatever, Like we
don't need to argue. I'm not trying to argue.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
Opinion.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Yeah, I just don't understand the hesitance to say, yeah,
we want to make the playoffs this year, that's the goal,
because yeah, I think you've got a chance to do that.
I think you were, you know, a couple of defensive
stops last year away from winning seven games last year.
So if you were that close with the worst single
season defense ever, you know, you should feel like with
everything you bring and the improvements you hope to have

(09:01):
made defensively, that you can make that jump this year.
Plus let's be real, like, this is not the This
ain't the two thousand and fourteen through twenty seventeen NFC South.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
It's not that division. So again I think they can.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
Well fourteen, well seven eight to one won the division,
so oh yeah that's true. Yeah, you know what, I
take that back, Yeah, you're right about that. Then Tim
Haates tanking also brings up a good point. Yeah, maybe
Dan wants to be cautious after what he saw his
uh bud Scott fitter do when we said all we
needed to do is improved to quarterback position and would

(09:36):
be good to go in twenty twenty three, and how
that happen.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Oh well, well it was more than that, though, Scott
Fitterer didn't just say. What Scott Fitterer said was we
believe we've built a roster ready to drop a quarterback into.
That's what Scott Fitterer said. That's what was held against him.
He said, we think basically, we think we think we've
built the roster to a point we can drop a
quarterback into it. That's a little bit different than saying, yeah,
we hope to push for the playoffs this year.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
Don't you think it's gotta be that?

Speaker 5 (10:00):
The assumption was there, considering Carolina just barely missed out
on the playoffs a year prior to.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Sure, But I think when you start, well, hey, we've
built the roster to a point we can drop a
quarterback into it is different than saying we'd like to
push for the playoffs. But anyway, seven oh four, five,
seven ninety six ten, Uh oh, yeah, Scott did.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Scott also said they were better at every position except
for one. Like he did say they were better at
every position except for one that he got very specific.
It wasn't just a yeah, we'd like to push for
the playoffs. Moving on, so anyway, he can also go
ahead go Now you wonder why Dan Morgan's kind of
being quiet on this stuff. I don't want I mean,
I'm not no, I don't like's, I don't wonder anything.
I would not hold it against Dan if he said, yes,

(10:38):
we'd like to make the playoffs, Yes we're hopeful, we
can push for the playoffs, because if they're not in
contention in December late that, to me, they will have failed.
Like that, it will be it will be not a
monumental failure, not wipe the slate, clean fire everybody, but like,
if they're not in that in the hunt graphic, you know,
on the Christmas Day game, I feel like this is

(11:00):
a failure of a season that you have to be
the in the in the hunt graphic, you know on
Fox on you know, on Thanks you know, on Christmas
Day or whatever, whoever's got the Christmas Day games this year, Netflix, whatever,
Like you should be in the in the Hunt graphic
on Christmas Day. Otherwise I feel like you failed. I
just do all right anyway. Seven oh four five seven
oh ninety six ten heat fan. Though he makes a

(11:20):
good point, he says, did you see today that Dave
Canalo said that nobody's gonna want to play us? I
like that type of energy. I did too. I saw
the quote. It got me a little fired up. That's
what I want to hear. I want that that little
bit of that bravado, all right, That's all I want.
Seven oh four, five seven oh ninety six ten Hit
us up. On the fan duel text line. Right now
we go to smoke with the best audio in sports.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
What did you say?

Speaker 6 (11:44):
You?

Speaker 4 (11:44):
What?

Speaker 3 (11:45):
What did you say? Hold up?

Speaker 4 (11:47):
Wait a minute? Send me right, I hear you, son.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
What I mean by that is all right, smoke you
what you.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
Got for us? All right?

Speaker 5 (11:55):
Starting with Carolina Panthers training camp, we go to the
man who out of nowhere became more more important players
owned the whole entire roster, and that is Christian rose Boom.
After the announcement that Josie Jewel got released twenty four
hours ago, he was asked about how he's adjusting to
his new role on the defense right out of the gate.

Speaker 7 (12:14):
I think what's been nice is early in my career
I was a backup, and it's real.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
It's really hard to be a backup.

Speaker 7 (12:21):
And prepare every game like you're gonna play and then
not seeing the field, so to prepare like a backup,
but prepare that you're gonna play. I think during OTAs
was just something that I've done kind of my whole career.
So it's still football. This is a scheme that I've
played in for. This would be my sixth season end,
so I feel comfortable in it. So I'm excited to,

(12:43):
like I said, see where my role is that way.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
I mean it sounds good. I want Christian rose Boom
to be ready to play. I did feel coming into
the season like he would of course be part of
the rotation, would have to be called upon.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Guys go down, guys need.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
To blow like you know, he's a tackling machine, He's
a physical guy. I know Bobby Brown, who we talked
about earlier. They played together in LA Brown has raved
about Christian rose Boom. Now, players often say nice things
about other players, their teammates, so you know, you take
that with a little bit of a grain of salt.
But you know, I thought he was a nice depth piece.
But I still sit here twenty four hours later, pretty

(13:19):
much exactly twenty four hours later, after the Josie Jewel
news broke yesterday, thinking to myself, smoke, you can't start
Trevin Wallace and Christian rose Boom week one, can you?
Like you still have to do something, don't you. Oh yeah,
I definitely think they have to do something. They can
be confident in the dB room, but this is something

(13:40):
they have to react to. They don't go around desperately
about this but you're gonna have to be proactive in
trying to find someone to add to that room. At
the very least that's a quality player. Yeah, what else
you got?

Speaker 4 (13:51):
All Right?

Speaker 5 (13:52):
Moving on to the offensive side of the ball. We've
talked a lot this offseason about the expectations for Bryce
Young heading into year three. Also hear some players weigh
in on Bryce Young's third year. As yesterday, Robert Hunt
talked about what an ideal season for Bryce Young would
look like in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
Man, I would let that be a Bryce Young deal,
you know, because we all have goals, we all have
shit that we want to do, and that's his. That's
another man. I can't say no pay attention on that. Man,
I will say that I'm happy to see his confidence.
I'm happy to see him played the way he played
because then when I walked into the building, I saw
that and like I saw how good he was, and

(14:32):
like how he can throw football and hit anything in
his room.

Speaker 4 (14:34):
So's he's he's he's talented as hell.

Speaker 6 (14:37):
So whatever you know he want to do, he got
the pieces around him to like try to help go that,
and you know, we can do a good job protecting him.
And everybody else can come in and it's gonna take
all eleven of us. So we all play the right way.
Bryce to do well, Lana do well, Patas do well,
everybody happy. You guys do well, and this we all
live a good at Charlotte and then we will remember

(14:58):
this season.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
By the way, congrats to Robert Hunt, big Bob Hunt.
He got engaged. The Panthers were promoting that on their
social media channels, I believe yesterday, maybe the day before.
But a big shout out to a guy that I mean,
of all the signings free agent signings in Panthers history
since I've been on the air here for I don't
know how the eight plus years, whatever it is now,
I was really pumped when they signed Robert Hunt in

(15:22):
free agency. I continue to be pumped that Robert Hunt
is a Panther. I think he's so great for the
locker room. The guys love him. He's a natural leader,
and I think when he speaks about Bryce, it's you know,
he doesn't He's very careful not to speak for another man.
You basically heard him say that they're a second ago.
But he speaks a lot of truth, and I think
you can hear in his voice the excitement he has

(15:43):
to protect Bryce again and to see year three of Bryce,
And I hope all of that comes to fruition. But
I do think if this team continues on a positive
trajectory and they improve this year, and especially if they're
able to find a way to let's say, grab a
wild card spot and he's a part of the you know,
resurgence of Panthers football, Robert Hunt's going to go down

(16:04):
as an all time fan favorite, assuming he stays healthy,
of course, because he's just He's made up of all
the right stuff. He's the exact guy, not not just
a guy you want in your locker room, but at
that position too. And I heard him say, by the way,
that he's never been a part of an offensive line
that all came back from one season to the next,
and he's really excited about that. So I, you know,
I hope a couple of years from now, you know,

(16:24):
we're talking about Robert Hunt as one of the all
time fan favorite Carolina Panthers.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
What else you got? All Right?

Speaker 5 (16:29):
Moving on to college football. Big Ten media Days are
currently ongoing as well. Yesterday, Matt Ruhle was at the
podium and he was asked about Scott Frost comment twelve
Media Days Yeah, saying that he took the wrong job
at Nebraska, and Matt Rule went on to go into
a four minute answer to said question. And here's a

(16:51):
little snippet from those four minutes.

Speaker 8 (16:54):
I can't imagine, like what that feels like for him, right,
I know what it felt like to get run out
of Carolina. And I would say to people, I don't
think I took the right job for me. Wasn't the
right fit. Scott came at a time, he had COVID,
he had all these different things. I can't talk about
his time, but what I can say was, this wasn't
a good job. Yeah, it was not a good job.

(17:15):
But we've made it a good job, and we're about
to make it a great job. This would be one
of the best jobs in the country. You walk in
and everyone's like, well, that was Scott's fault, you know,
in Carolina, So that was Matt's fault. But like good programs,
like it's everybody okay again.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
You weren't run out of Carolina. You were the author
of your own demise here. You were hyper controlling, You
didn't hire the right staff when you first got here.
All the things that we already know about Matt Rule.
So like that part, I'll set that aside for a second.
You weren't run out of town. What about the fact
that he's claiming this wasn't a good Nebraska wasn't a

(17:54):
good job when he took over, Matt, Nebraska's always been
a good job, all right. It's had its down times,
don't no, no, no question about it. But when you're
the only and biggest show in the state you have,
I mean, that's a top three fan base in college football.

Speaker 3 (18:08):
That is not an exaggeration, especially when it comes to loyalty.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
Yeah, correct, Now all the money in that state goes
to Nebraska Cornhuskers athletics.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
For God's sake.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
They sell out the football stadium for women's volleyball matches
like they The love that Huskers fans have for all
things Nebraska is nearly unmatched in most of college athletics,
and there are a lot of great fan bases in
college athletics.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
So you can, like, I don't know, I'm always.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
Amazed by Matt Rule's ability to like miss the main avenue,
to take the best route to the best answer, and
still find a way to step in it, like you
don't have to care what Panthers fans think anymore. That
was a dumb comment that you will run out of town.
But to then piss off your own fan base by
declaring this wasn't a good job when you got here,
but you are turning it into a good job. You,

(18:54):
Matt Rule, are turning Nebraska Cornhusker football into a good job.
I mean, the audacity is just off the charts. But
then again, that's Matt Rule we're talking about here. What
else you got? All right, We'll be end back here
in Charlotte, North Carolina. As there was a lot of
stuff that Jim Phillips covered ground on yesterday, But one
of the things that I found most intriguing was the
fact that there could be some fines going college's ways

(19:17):
if there's field storming starting this year.

Speaker 9 (19:20):
As I begin my remarks about the upcoming acc football season,
I want to announce two specific conference policies that will
be implemented this fall in the sports of football and
men's and women's basketball. Our conference has elevated its expectations
around court and field safety. Members are required to continue

(19:40):
developing events security plans, which will now include a review
by a third party independently, and to ensure that only participants, coaches, officials,
and authorized personnel are allowed in the competitionary before, during,
and at the conclusion of any competition. The plan may
allow spectators to access the competition area following a contest,

(20:04):
but only after the visiting team and officials have safely
exited the area.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
What I was I was listening to his entire answer yesterday,
so I was in the room for that. So it's
what fifty thousand, one hundred thousand, and two hundred thousand
are those defines?

Speaker 3 (20:24):
Is that right?

Speaker 4 (20:25):
As of what we know right now?

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Yes, So it's a tier. Okay.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
So in this day and age of you know, paying
players and the new like, they've been cutting staff at
big college athletics programs across the country because so much
of the money now is being funneled to the players,
which is fine, but you know, I thought it was
going to be more along the lines of a half
million million dollars for things.

Speaker 5 (20:43):
Like that, especially considering what's the SEC finds the programs.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
I got Colin Haggard here too. When we come back.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
I want to get his thoughts on this because he
and I have had some in depth discussions about how
to mitigate this, but it seems like what doesn't seem
like all these and that was definitive yesterday are one
cracking down.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
So what do you do?

Speaker 2 (21:05):
Do you put a timer on the scoreboard? Like do
you just is there somebody waiting to confirm that every
visiting player or official is off the field? And then
they drop the flag and you can you can, you
can storm the field to celebrate with the home team. Like,
what's the policy there? I am curious about that. It's
not a big story, it's not the biggest news in
the world. But you know, one of the cool things

(21:27):
about college athletics. You don't get that in the NFL.
You don't get that in the NBA. You don't get that.
Major League Baseball fans don't find their way onto the field.
It's like, what what's the policy here? We'll get to
it all next Live from ACC Kickoff in Uptown. Sports
Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z Live from ACC

(21:57):
Kickoff in Uptown at the Hilton. Football is nearly back
and we know that here in Charlotte because right down
the street the Panthers are in day three of training camp.
We'll talk more about that coming up in just a bit.
A lot of actually Panthers training camp talk in the
back half of the show. Of course, they're looking for
linebacker help. They signed a cornerback this morning. A lot
of audio to get to. Still a debate on the

(22:18):
text line about whether or not Dan Morgan should be
talking about making the playoffs this year.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
All sorts of good stuff to get to.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
And we still have to talk a little bit of
Hornets because there was an interesting Brett Siegel piece about
the Summer League and Conka Nipple with some quotes in
there about what he hopes can be his impact on
the Hornets organization, changing the culture, all those sorts of things.

Speaker 3 (22:37):
But right now, live.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
From Uptown, we are joined by the senior Vice president
for ACC Football, Michael Strickland, joining us live here on
Radio Row.

Speaker 3 (22:45):
And Michael, I appreciate you popping in.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
I wasn't sure if you were going to make it today,
and then when you showed up, I was very happy
you did. Kyle wouldn't miss it for anything, absolutely, man. Well,
listen you every day. I assume you're just neck deep
in all things ACC football, and you know, getting this
conference ready for another big season. For the folks out
there that don't know what the senior VP of ACC
Football does, what is your day to.

Speaker 10 (23:05):
Day Well, I'm the sport administrator for football, so I
handle a primary point of contact for all things related
to our administration to sport. So coordinate liaison with our
head football coaches and their staffs and athletic directors on
football related topics. Build the schedule, the intraconference schedule an
annual basis, work with ESPN to make sure those games
get on the right networks at the right times, sure

(23:26):
to maximize our exposure. We had all of our regular
season football operations and policies and procedures, game management officiating,
all of our non CFP Bowl agreements, the Championship game administration,
and working with the Panthers in Teper Sports and the
shaw On Sports Foundation to make sure that first Saturday
in December at Bank of America Stadium is a success
for us. And then advocating for the ACC position on

(23:49):
things from a national perspective of INSTABLA Football Oversight Committee
at AFCA, National Football Foundation organizations such as that to
make sure we're doing everything we can to put our
programs the best possible position for success, but also be
caretakers of the game. The game of college football is
important to us now, but we're just the current caretakers
and there'll be somebody behind us. We got to make
sure we leave it, you know, certainly as good as

(24:10):
we found it, hopefully better off than.

Speaker 4 (24:12):
We found it.

Speaker 3 (24:12):
Steward's of the game that we all love, right absolutely.

Speaker 2 (24:15):
So one of the things that I was thinking about
as you walked up too, is that has it.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
Been two years since you guys moved to Charlotte. It's
been two years.

Speaker 4 (24:21):
We've had two full seasons.

Speaker 10 (24:22):
We're going into our third season with the new office
space there on six twenty South Trion Street.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
So I was there the day of the press conference
and the ribbon cutting and every their flag raising and
everything else, And you know, I was so happy to
get you guys here because we're just down the street
most days. So I love that you're here now with
just what's it been like to be located here the
last couple of years. How has it changed things in
terms of partnerships or your ability to administer football? Just
what's it like being in Charlotte now full time?

Speaker 4 (24:45):
Well?

Speaker 10 (24:45):
Selfishly as a staff member that gets to work in
a beautiful office building and then you go down twelve
stories and you've got walk ability in uptown Charlotte for
you know, lunch spots. We didn't have that at our
old place, you know, up the road. So that's been
great from an employee experience perspective, but it's less of
out that more about what's good for the organization, and
so the connectivity to our membership. All of our membership

(25:05):
can fly directly, you know, into Charlotte and the world
class airport that we've got here, so our ability to
meet and hold be more efficient with our with our
business operations. That's certainly been very helpful. Our partnership with ESPN.
They've got a huge presidence out in the Valentine areas
who are much closer to them and our day to
day points of contact with agency network, so we're in
much better shape there.

Speaker 4 (25:25):
From a connectivity perspective.

Speaker 10 (25:27):
And then the business story relationships that you mentioned, it's
opened up a.

Speaker 4 (25:31):
Lot of doors for us.

Speaker 10 (25:32):
We've also had an anchor here with the football championship game,
but men's basketball was back here at Spectrum last year,
be back again. You'll start to see the women's basketball
tournament start to rotate through here as well. On an
ongoing basis, baseball will be be here in Uptown next May.
So we're looking to bring as much of our of
our activity to Charlotte as possible.

Speaker 3 (25:49):
That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (25:50):
Michael Strickland, Senior Vice president ACC Football.

Speaker 3 (25:52):
He's here with us on Radio Row.

Speaker 2 (25:54):
I want to ask you about the playoff because obviously
that's been a huge topic of conversation for a while now.
Eleven right, that's being pitched. Some conferences like it, some don't.
The other one what are we calling it? Four four
three two one one three three, I don't know what
the exact comment. We got to rebrand that one a
little bit. But just for the folks that might not
know what is the conference's position on, you know, what
they hope a new college football playoff could look like,

(26:16):
and you know the ACC stake and roll in it.

Speaker 10 (26:18):
The commissioner touched on it a little bit yesterday in
this forum. But our position is that we believe conference
championships matter.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Right.

Speaker 10 (26:25):
We need to protect the integrity and specialness of conference
championship games and conference championships. So, uh, the five aqs
for the for the conference champions out of the four
Power four conferences and the highest rank of the G
six conferences. We are strong proponents of that continuing well
into the future. We're not opposed to expansion of the playoffs,

(26:45):
so with the twelve team format now, we're not opposed
to increasing the size of the field of fourteen or
sixteen teams. Not sure we need to go much much
larger than sixteen, because you got to have teams that
have earned our way in and have a legitimate chance
to win the championship.

Speaker 4 (26:58):
Yep, that's the only reason you need to be in
the tournament.

Speaker 10 (27:02):
But we believe that large access is really what's fair
and right about the sport. From season to season, conferences
are stronger and weaker. That is not a fixed a
dynamic from on an annual basis. So we've got to
have the ability across the country for teams to improve

(27:22):
from year to year and line up on the field
and earn it.

Speaker 4 (27:26):
We love our non conference games that we've got.

Speaker 10 (27:28):
We've got the strongest non conference schedule of any conference
in America twenty seven eighty four games, nine more than
the next closest, and so that's a great way to
compare your conference's strength and death against others, and so
our coaches and our athletic director's strong components of protecting
the conference champs and then let everybody else earn it
on the field.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
There you go. Now, something else? You mentioned the Commissioner's
forum yesterday. I was in there for that, and you know,
it struck me as really interesting that Jim basically said, hey,
you know that twenty and a half million dollar number
from the House settlement. You know he's encouraging the other
conferences and coaches. We got to stick to this, right.
We don't want to undermine this new structure before we
ever really get started realistically though, like, what what do

(28:08):
we expect that teams are going to adhere to this?
Like and what effect? How confident are you? I guess
that Brian Seely and the College Sports Commission can truly
govern this in a meaningful way.

Speaker 10 (28:17):
We are very confident and very positive about the new
structure moving forward. The revenue sharing system that's in place
provides a kind of a level footing for everybody to
be equally competitive, legitimate nil there's a pathway for that,
and if you're worth it, you'll you'll get it. Right,

(28:39):
But the payer play stuff that was happening, that that
was the piece that needed to be to be to
be rained in and that was all covered under the settlement.
So we're we're really satisfied with that structure. We have
a lot of faith in Brian and the new CSC structure.
We've always talked for years about we wish there would
be enforcement, we wish there would be enforcement. Well, now
we've got a structure that's much more more likely to.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
Be success well from an enforcement perspective.

Speaker 10 (29:01):
But I look at my watch air we're twenty three
days in to the new structure, and his commissioner mentioned
yesterday we need to show some patients, give Brian and
his staff that he's still building, give them a chance.
It's not gonna happen overnight, but have faith. And then
it's on all of us to be adults in the
room and not intentionally try to undermine the system.

Speaker 4 (29:22):
You know, in the first three weeks.

Speaker 10 (29:23):
Yeah, don't try to cut corners, don't try to find
the gray area. This is what we wanted, this is
what we think is in the best interest of the sport.

Speaker 4 (29:31):
It's good for our student athletes.

Speaker 10 (29:33):
So let's all stay committed to helping it be as
successful as it possibly can.

Speaker 2 (29:39):
I go back to I think it was a year
ago there was the whole discussion the report maybe that
some of the ACC coaches had basically said, you know,
where's our Paul finebaumb you know, why is the ACC network?
Why why don't we get the same advocacy from the
network that they get over there. We had a lot
of conversations about that last year, you know, being here
in Charlotte, it was obviously a big topic of conversation
for us in particular, but just in terms of like

(30:00):
I saw them rolling out yesterday, ACC Huddle is going
to be at the Big Games this year and I'm
really excited about that.

Speaker 3 (30:04):
I have friends of the network.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
But what are your thoughts on, you know, the coverage
of the conference and how you know it should be
advocated for via the media. How much did that conversation
resonate with you and what are your thoughts on.

Speaker 10 (30:14):
You are spot on with your recollection of what the
coaches have been saying over the years. And yesterday's announcement
by ACC Network with the hiring of Jimbo Fisher as
the newest talent on ACC Network, that is intentional, and
Jimbo has always been outspoken about what his thoughts are
regarding college football, and so we think he's going to
get on the air and mix it up.

Speaker 4 (30:33):
A little bit. Uh So, Uh, I was we were.

Speaker 10 (30:35):
Just upstairs with with with Paton Nordoozy, and someone asked him,
how do you feel about it? He goes, I love it.
I love it. That's exactly what we've been talking about.
It's almost like you were you're listening on that conversation.
So we're excited about what that's going to look like.
And it should be uh something that the viewers will
want to tune in and hear what he has to say.
Maybe he'll go after it a little bit back and
forth with Paul, you know, across the across the different

(30:57):
airways that uh in the Disney Family networks, and we'll
have some fun with it.

Speaker 3 (31:00):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to that.

Speaker 2 (31:01):
I mean, do you think how there are a lot
of folks who feel like this conference is unfairly maligned, right?
How much do you agree with that? Just in terms
of its football depth year over year.

Speaker 10 (31:11):
Well, thirteen Bowl eligible teams led the country last year.

Speaker 4 (31:15):
That's just a fact. Yep. So I can argue with that.
If you want to talk about.

Speaker 10 (31:20):
Depth and recency of depth, we went deeper than any
other conference in America last year, so that's a pretty
good standard to evaluate. How many teams did you send
in the playoff? Well, we sent multiple teams to the playoff.
Only three conferences were a multi bed league, and we
were one of the three. You look at where teams
that have won a national championship since nineteen eighty ra
At lastyear talked about this yesterday in his comments. They

(31:42):
all reside in three conferences, the SEC, the ACC and
the Big Ten, and we've got just as many national
championships in that time as the Big Ten.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
Facts, right, it's hard to argue with these numbers.

Speaker 4 (31:56):
All right.

Speaker 2 (31:56):
Michael Strickland, Senior Vice president ACC Football here with us
on radio. I've enjoyed it. I think I can keep
you for an hour and ask you questions, but I
can't do that. So it's great to meet you. I
appreciate the time. Maybe we can chat against So love
to thank you. Michael Strickland with us here on radio.
Row good stuff right there. We got to talk about
more that will react to some of that and respond
when we come back. But right now we go to
smoke on the headlines.

Speaker 4 (32:16):
Who is smoke? Where is smoke?

Speaker 3 (32:18):
Where there's smoke, there's fire.

Speaker 4 (32:21):
Let's go all right, smoke.

Speaker 3 (32:23):
What's the latest?

Speaker 4 (32:23):
All right?

Speaker 5 (32:24):
The latest is something that we talked about at the
start of the hour. But the Hornets have made a move,
and it's to sign Antonio Reeve's second round pick of
the Pelicans last year, shooting guard who's shot thirty nine
percent from three from behind the arc in forty four
games for Repelicans. He is only a two way deal,
and in correspondence of that move, they have released Damian

(32:46):
Boff from his two way contract. Kyle, you just predicted that, right, Yeah,
I predicted Bob was the odd man out. Did you
just predict it, like fifteen minutes ago, twenty minutes ago?

Speaker 3 (32:56):
Yeah, look at you. Thank a Victory leaft Bick guy.

Speaker 4 (32:59):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (32:59):
I mean, I've I'm sure you don't want to do
that at.

Speaker 4 (33:03):
Seems like a nice guy.

Speaker 2 (33:04):
Somebody else on the text lot a couple of minutes
ago said, did the horns just sign another freaking guard? Yeah,
but he's on a two way contract. He's probably gonna
spend a lot of time in Greensboro and it doesn't
really affect the big club that much.

Speaker 5 (33:13):
Well, to be fair that the two way players over
the last three years have seen a lot of time
in sure, Well.

Speaker 3 (33:19):
It's all because of injuries.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
In a perfect world, you know, in an ideal world
or something close to it, you know, he's playing in
Greensboro pretty much all year.

Speaker 3 (33:26):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Anything else, uh, not off the top here? Now, okay,
all right, we'll come back. We'll tell you who balled
Out a bit more on the Panthers. Uh, chad Ocho
Cinco with a bold prediction for the Panther. Yes, that
chad Ocho Cinco with a bold prediction for the Carolina Panthers.
We'll get to it next. Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ.

Speaker 11 (34:00):
On your feet, intercepted by Julius Peppers and he takes
it all the way forty seven yards for the score.

Speaker 3 (34:13):
Here he come, Jimmy.

Speaker 5 (34:17):
Car Jimmy Johnson.

Speaker 12 (34:25):
Away from on the others.

Speaker 3 (34:31):
With the qui.

Speaker 2 (34:35):
High performers, big time achievers, we call it Who Balled Out?
And it's powered by high performance real estate advisors and
the biggest dad gun baller of them all, Thomas L.
Rodd go to High Performance real Estate dot Com and
they'll see you at the closing table smoke which you
bring for show and tell.

Speaker 5 (34:50):
Well, unfortunately it comes at the Braves expense. But I'm
gonna give a who bought out to Justin Verlander. He's
not the same picture he was, but today he just
got his first win as a member of this San
Francisco Giants dead his career win number two hundred sixty three.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
It's pretty incredible.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
Huh two sixty three, Like he's not gonna get to
three hundred, but it's still been an incredible career for
that guy.

Speaker 3 (35:13):
Absolutely incredible.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Now this one, I'm not the biggest fan, but you
know the sports news and it's not exactly mid October form,
and I think it's worth mentioning that Russell Wilson is
officially QB one in New York. According to Brian dabol
there will not be any highly publicized quarterback battle with
the New York Giants this year. On the very first

(35:35):
day of training camp, Brian day Ball made it clear
that Russell Wilson will be QB one for the New
York Giants. So I guess congratulations are in order for
Russell Wilson, What are you laughing about back there?

Speaker 5 (35:48):
Congratulations Giants family? Like is it like Flounder just walked away?

Speaker 2 (35:52):
He'd be the first, the best person to ask about this,
since he does root for that football team, But like,
how little are you expecting from the New York Giants
this year?

Speaker 5 (36:00):
All day Balls like the clearest candidate to get fired
this year, both him and Joe Shane.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
Do you feel like? I don't know, man, The day
Ball thing is weird because he goes there.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
They get to the playoffs his first year, Daniel Jones
wins a playoff game. Dab All's the savior of New York.
He's got radio hosts crying on the air. You know
that they feel like this, this new era of Giants
football is upon them. They survived Joe Judge, they survived
Ben McAdoo, they survived whoever the hell was in between.
And I forget, but like, I don't know, man, Like

(36:31):
there's a part of me that still wants to think.
I don't know if I want to thank so I'm
not invested. But like I thought Brian Dable was a
great hire when they made it, Like I thought things
were really gonna work out there, especially after year one,
but like he's been saddled with you know, Daniel Jones
and I hate to Tommy Gabagoul like, I don't know,
like do we know what kind of coach Brian Dable

(36:54):
really is?

Speaker 5 (36:55):
Does it matter? I don't know, what do you think
at this point? I don't think it really matters that market. Yeah, no,
I like with that, you know, I agree with that.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
I mean, I'm not tuned into w fa N every day.
I don't know what the the overarching opinion is of
the fans with him up there.

Speaker 3 (37:10):
But I don't know. I'm just surprised that we're here.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
And maybe I don't know, maybe Russell Wilson goes and
hoops this year.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
Is it possible? Or is he just too cooked?

Speaker 4 (37:18):
New York.

Speaker 5 (37:19):
Let's try our best, Let's do our absolute best, all right?
Seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten, hit us
up on the FanDuel text lot. How about uh, how
about Princely uman Niellen already being scolded in practice for
putting his hands on Bryce Young smoke.

Speaker 2 (37:37):
I like this kid coming out of Ole miss. I
know he's known for his speed rush and you know,
crazy bend and you know, twit twitchy and all that stuff.
And apparently he made a heck of a move and
got to Bryce Young but forgot that he couldn't put
his hands on him, and Dave Canalis had to stop practice, call.

Speaker 3 (37:54):
Him up, remind me, remind everybody to take care of
each other.

Speaker 2 (37:57):
As he put it, said he loved the explosive news,
didn't like the contact. Like Buddy Princeley, I love his attitude.
Don't touch by Young right now, don't touch him, leave
him alone.

Speaker 5 (38:07):
Yeah, well, speaking of that, it's a good problem to
have though, in my opinion, I yeah, I agree if
the guy's going a little too hard, especially if it's
a rookie. Someone literally tweeted at him saying, keep your
filthy hands off my QB, and he did it with
the salute emoji. So at least he has a sense
of humor. But yeah, you know, it could have been

(38:27):
a lot worse. You know, we've had fights with quarterbacks
and defensive players here before, so you know, saying nothing.

Speaker 2 (38:33):
Yeah, And also I want to point out too, because
we were talking, you and I were talking about Julian
Blackman earlier in the show. Julian Blackman, the safety that
Smoke coveted for the Panthers secondary and I was right
there with him. I would have loved the Julian Blackman
signing as much as anybody else. Blackman ends up with
the New Orleans Saints. And when we brought this up
earlier in the show, you know, somebody said, hey, KB,
I think that's I think they like Demani a lot,

(38:56):
and I what's that smoke? Okay, so hold on, I
smoked might be trying to communicate with me back in
the studio, Smoke, just tell me what you got.

Speaker 3 (39:03):
What's going on.

Speaker 5 (39:03):
Back I actually got an audio of Dave Canal's talking
about that about Demani Richardson.

Speaker 3 (39:07):
Yeah, let's play. It's what did he say?

Speaker 12 (39:09):
You know, he's got a knack for the ball.

Speaker 3 (39:11):
It started last year, you know.

Speaker 12 (39:12):
So he shows up again on the first day with
an interception on a ball that was slightly overthrown there
and he went, you know, from the middle of the
field and made a great play on that. But I
think again, it's kind of goes to the same thing.
It's watching him communicate. I think if you're asking for
one specific thing, it's watching him talk. He's got to
be connected with the corner, the nickel, the calls that
are coming with motions and all those things. And I

(39:33):
think that's probably the biggest growth that I see from
Demani as his level of comfort in our system, to
be able to talk loudly.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
You know.

Speaker 12 (39:41):
I think sometimes the guy's kind of you know, sheepishlyl
whishs for something out there. But when you can hear
him loud and they own it and they're demonstrative, you
know that they really have grown, you know, to the
understanding of the concepts.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
So it wasn't just Dave Canalis, you know, really raving
about Demani Richardson. J. C.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
Horn was too.

Speaker 2 (39:58):
Now you know, Horn went to the yes he see
well as part of his you know, compliment, he said, listen,
he came out of the SEC so I expect him
to be a high level player, says he's turning into
just that. But one of the more and I think
Dave Canalis just said or alluded to this, like they're
really impressed with his communication out there, that he's really
vocal out there on the field, displaying that he knows
where to be and that you know, he's growing into

(40:20):
this role. So you know, Dan Morgan I heard I
forget who played the audio earlier today might have been
Mack and Bone. But you know, Dan was basically saying
that sometimes the answer has to be on the roster,
and as we get closer, you know that there's still
plenty of time to make moves and go out there
looking on the open market for additional help. And I'm
sure they will scour everything that needs to be scoured

(40:40):
to do just that.

Speaker 3 (40:41):
Smoke, But I don't know.

Speaker 2 (40:43):
Maybe that I don't know if they were pursuing black
men heavily. I'd heard they were interested, but it could
just be they think Demani Richardson is ready to step
in and fill that role full time.

Speaker 5 (40:53):
Yeah, I think they're a lot more high on Demani
than we were as a fan base. And to be
fair to Demani richard especially as a UDFA last year,
he had a lot of moments where he popped.

Speaker 4 (41:03):
It's like pretty good there.

Speaker 5 (41:05):
That might be fine, but it was never too at
least a fan base is and our viewpoint to say, yeah,
he's definitely got a bright future. Man, you can't do
anything else around him. It's not like we're as high
on Demani Richardson as we are as high on Jalen Cocher.

Speaker 4 (41:20):
But let's put it like this.

Speaker 5 (41:22):
You got to think like this because it seems like
he's gonna have a bigger role than people were expecting.
What if this year Demanie Richardson has a pretty good
sophomore year, does very well and kind of takes the
job to his own. You could have two players from
one draft class and not even be drafted players, Two
udfas that could become starters or key contributors on a

(41:44):
team that, if anything, should be a great sign and
should be very telling for how Dan Morgan in his
front office could be doing things moving forward.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
Yeah, I'm with you, and I want to stay on
the Panthers when we come back, because there's another i'll
call it development that I am curious to know how
much it concerns Panthers fans. There's a lot I think
to be optimistic and excited about. But there are some
obvious concerns with this team, and most recently starts with
Josie Jewell. But you know another player who doesn't seem
to be really all that close to getting back on

(42:14):
the field.

Speaker 3 (42:15):
How big an issue is that?

Speaker 2 (42:17):
Live from acc kickoff in Uptown at the Hilton still
