Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to The Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Today Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z Hour Number
two KB and Smoke Live from the Chandler Volta Studios,

(00:29):
The Carolina's Personal Injury Lawyers. One call, that's all go
to CV Injury law dot com. Big thanks to Joe
Person talking Panthers there in the previous segment, Marty Snyder NBC,
Amazon and Turner NASCAR Studio host Pitt Reporter. He's back
in twenty minutes. It's also a North Carolina man. He's
a Panthers fan. We'll see what he thinks about the
start of training camp. In addition to Little racin coming

(00:51):
up this weekend, Will Shane Ginzbergen went again. Van Ginsbergen
went again. He didn't win last week, then he did,
but the two prior weeks SVG came away with a
dub and well now he's got to prove it on
an oval.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
The problem was SVG's race with the hell in a
handbasket within five laps last week. Yeah so yeah, but
the brickyard is gonna be interesting. Uh, you know, and
we're gonna see someone win one million dollars. I'm going
to guarantee something. Kyle, what's up? Tye is gonna win
a million dollars?

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Tye?

Speaker 4 (01:24):
What I just said, ty is gonna win a million dollars?
Uh huh Okay, yeah, you didn't ask me which one.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
I know, I know, I knew what you were doing.
But okay, anyway, Marty Snyder coming up in twenty minutes.
We got Nate Wimberley back in studio coming up at
five o'clock. I did want to mention something really quickly.
There was a Texter, well, there were two Texters who
got my attention yesterday. There was the one guy who
we kissed and made up at the end of the
show yesterday. He was trying to troll. There was him,
and then there was another guy who got upset when

(01:50):
you and I were talking about the unc SEC story,
the Adam Smith inside Carolina report that Carolina is exploring
a move to the Southeastern Conference, and we were talking
about Clemson in that and I had brought up that
over the past couple of years, I'd begun to think
that maybe Clemson might be more likely to end up

(02:11):
in the Big Ten, and he got very upset. He's like,
what do you guys mean that that the SEC wouldn't
want Clemson. You haven't seen the true numbers. You have
no idea what the numbers are. And I'm like, oh,
hold on, And I didn't get I meant to respond
to it yesterday, but I did want to bring it up.
I don't even it's not that I think the SEC.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Doesn't want Clemson.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
I also want to point out that Eric McLain, who'd
stopped by yesterday when I brought this story up. His
reaction was kind of the same as mine, that, Yeah,
of course Carolina's, you know, exploring getting out. So is Clemson,
So is Florida State, so is NC State, so is Miami,
so is Virginia Tech. Like everybody's explored it. You know,
there's a different level of who's attractive and who's not.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
We get that.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
But point being, yeah, a lot of teams are looking
to get out. But as it pertains to Clemson real quick,
you know, my thought for a long time, like a
lot of people, it has been in the state of
South Carolina with the game Cocks. It's not a big state.
It's not one of the most populated states in the country.
Let's say even though you know, more and more Ohio
wins end up there every year. You know, would they

(03:11):
want to double down on South Carolina steel or are
the days of trying to you know, seize and acquire markets?
Is that over right now that we truly and fully
live in this new digital age?

Speaker 3 (03:21):
Is it?

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Is it strictly about the biggest fan basis the most
attractive properties. And the truth is, I don't know exactly
what the answer is, because of course Clemson would be,
you know, attractive to any conference. Yeah, of course they
would be. But I don't know what the true motivations are.
I don't know what their strategy is in the SEC.
That's why I brought that up yesterday the way that
I did. It's not I mean whether or not you've

(03:42):
we've seen the same numbers as you. We don't disagree that,
of course the Big Ten and the SEC would have
interest in Clemson. I just don't know if it's the
way things like do they still prioritize that, do they
still do The game Cocks object to Clemson being in
the conference the way that they have pretty much since
they joined the conference.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, that's going to be an interesting con and.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Doesn't matter because Texas A and M also objected to
Texas and that still happened.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
I was about to bring that up.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
It's like it's like, yeah, they could hate it, but
the SEC could say, bleep you because we just did
the same thing to Texas A and M.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Right, and Texas A and M has a lot more
money than you do.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
To that guy was really upset with us yesterday, and
I meant to address that text. And I don't know
if he's listening right now or not, but I was
thinking about it this morning because you know, I just
I don't know, maybe the markets don't matter anymore because
back in that the last couple of rounds of ACC realignment,
it was about, you know, truly being an East Coast
conference from New England all the way down to South Beach,
the entire East Coast, you know, covered up by the

(04:37):
Atlantic Coast Conference getting into this market and that market.
I just it still matters to a degree, but I
don't know how much it matters to the imperialists in
college football these days.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Well, in the Big Ten would make sense, because you know,
they've now gone fully to the West coast. The only
area they haven't gone to south. I mean, the close
as they've gotten to the south is mid Atlantic with Maryland.
They haven't gotten to the South. And Clemson would get
the that avenue and that ticket to to South and
what also. But that's where I feel like SEC still
makes a lot of sense for Clemson, just because it

(05:08):
is a school with a lot of powers. You know,
football is always going to be their main school. Basketball's
turned into a very consistent school. Uh has been very
consistent for Clemson, and baseball's turned into a very good
sport for Clemson as well.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Long Clemson's got money, they've there, They're pretty well rounded.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
They win.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
Yeah, absolutely, And and to your point though, South Carolina
the Gamecocks are in the state capitol.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Clemson's not. So I don't know if it matters. We'll see.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
But anyway, right now we go to smoke with the
best audio in sports.

Speaker 5 (05:35):
What did you say? You?

Speaker 3 (05:37):
What? What did you say? Wait a minute?

Speaker 1 (05:41):
So me way what I mean by that is?

Speaker 2 (05:45):
And there you go, ar the Gamecock fan on the
FanDuel text line, we object to clem sucks spoken.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
What you got to guess you.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
Could technically call him that since you beat them U anyway,
So you were asking in the last hour about what
the strategy could be for Dave Canalis this year in
the preseason as opposed to last season. Well, ironically enough,
Adam Feelin was talking to the media via zoom earlier
this afternoon and he was asked about how if he's
noticed any differences between the style of approach that Dave

(06:15):
Canal's has this year as opposed to last year.

Speaker 5 (06:18):
Yeah, I think I think just confidence in his approach.
You know, I think as a new head coach and
I'm kind of speaking for him here, but as a
new head coach, I think there's a little bit of
like I think, this is what I want to do,
this is my plan, and I'm gonna trust it. But
I think him coming to year two, you can see
him just like all right, like i know what I'm doing,

(06:39):
i know what works.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
And I'm all in.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
And I think when you feel as a player, you
kind of feel the same way, like you feel the
confidence coming off of him, of the schedule, of the
philosophy of what he wants out of players, and what
is it going to take for you as a player
to extend your career here, like what he's exactly looking for.
You have a lot of confidence in knowing I can

(07:02):
just go and be myself and do exactly.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
What they want.

Speaker 5 (07:07):
And so again, it really comes down to just confidence
in the approach, and we all feel that.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
If we're being honest, like, that's a hell of an
endorsement of Dave Canalis right there, that he's talking about
a second year head coach coming off a five win
season and speaking about him in terms like he's a
veteran who knows what he's doing, he understands the job,
he knows who he is, he knows his Like I
still sometimes am a little bit amazed that we had

(07:38):
exactly zero conversations last season about a first time head
coach who was also calling offensive plays. At no point
do we have any talks about, man, he really should
give up play calling.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Maybe it's too much for him.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
I was gonna say, closest we got was out the
first two games. But outside of that, it's like it
immediately became all briceles just but right.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
But that was that was that right? It was oh
my god, look at Bryce. Yeah, but it was also
just kind of figuring things out early on just who
he is, what it was going to look like. We
kind of figured it would be a little bit bumpy
in the beginning. But like, at no point last year
was there ever really an earnest conversation about this guy's
in over his head. Remember that now, Philly's a different market,
and I always bring this up, but like Sirianni in

(08:19):
his first year, Sirianni's calling place, they didn't want that anymore.
Like you know, the entire Philadelphia media, the fan base,
they're calling for it, like you got to give up
play calling, it's too much. So I mean, at no
point did we have any conversation about that regarding Dave
Canalis last year. And I think it speaks to what
Adam Thielen is. It's a strong opinion. It's a hell
of an endorsement for a guy from a guy who's
been around the NFL for a long time.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
What else you got, all right, Well, a couple of
days ago you were talking about how the Pittsburgh Pirates
have essentially been wasting Paul Skeys to the point where
you already won't him traded away from Pittsburgh and mini
fans in the MLB do as well, and the Pirates
are going to be sellers at the deadline for the
umptieth time in the last twenty five years. And on
the Pittsburgh Morning Radio Show with Adam Crawley on ninety

(09:01):
three point sevent a band one Collar has finally reached
his breaking point with the Buckos.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Bobby that I am really Matt.

Speaker 6 (09:12):
You know why what you know? I caught my best
friend with my wife years ago, and I thought that
was the end of the world.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
But you know what.

Speaker 6 (09:20):
You can always get a woman, but you can't change
your love for your hometown barts, and I can't take
it anymore. I'm done with them.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Did you get remarried, Bob? No, thank you, Bob.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
You can always find a woman. By the way, the
Yinzer came all the way out there, the hometown parts.
You can always find another woman, but I can't replace
my hometown parts. Uh's got a point, though. My dad
actually hit me up the other day. I don't know

(09:57):
if I should say this or not. I don't think
my eleven year old nephew listens to sports radio, big
sports fan. I don't think he listens so kind of
rolling the dice here a little bit, but my brother's
surprising my nephew with a trimp to Cincinnati to go
see the Dodgers.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
If you're listening in surprise.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
I mean, I listen. I can be if I'm the
bad uncle on this one, I might.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
I don't think.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
I doubt my nephew is listening to my podcast tonight
when he gets out of school. But he's wait a minute,
I just realized what time. Yeah, he's not at school. Anyway,
he's still not listening. Doesn't matter. And you know, my
dad's talking about trips, like, man, we gotta get to pipe.
We can maybe we go to Pittsburgh and watch him play.
And I'm thinking to myself, I don't really want to
go to Pittsburgh. And it's not because it's not a

(10:35):
nice ballpark. Everything you hear about Pittsburgh is that it's
a great ballpark. But I don't want to give Bob
Nutting a dollar of my money. Like I'm not a
big boycott guy. I'm not a big you know. I
will take a principled stand if I need to, especially
with my wallet, but I don't do it a lot
rarely ever. But the thought occurred to me is like
Dad was bringing it up I don't want to go

(10:55):
give Bob Nutting any money. He's everything that's wrong with baseball.

Speaker 4 (10:59):
Like every single time they've had a big promotion where
they sell the stadium out, this year at PNC Park,
it's been it's led to him getting blown out and
every fans channing sell the team looks The only reasons
to go see to Pirates right now is for Paul
Schimes whenever he's pitching, or to see Andrew McCutcheon potentially
one last time since this could be his last year

(11:20):
and he's wanted a Pirate greats.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah, in a borderline Hall of Famer. Yeah, I just
you know, we again, just the kind of mapping out trips.
How you want to go to Pittsburgh. No, I don't
want to get Bob Notting any money at all. Also,
Dodgers in Red Sox tonight. You and I haven't talked
about this, our two favorite teams begin the series tonight.
I checked the ticket prices for the games this weekend.

(11:44):
The upper deck seats start at like a buck seventy five.
You're not getting anything middle of the road for under
four hundred and fifty dollars a ticket, and everything else
is like eight hundred to twelve hundred for Dodgers, Red
Sox and Finway starting tonight.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
Makes sense. Just outrageous ticket prices. What else you got?

Speaker 4 (12:03):
All right, Well, we did get to talk about this
with you earlier this week because you're not here. But
Scotti Scheffler won yet another major. Well everyone's talking about Hey,
could he be the next Tiger? Could he catch Tigers fifteen?
When he's at four h pft comment or asked him
the real questions all depart by take podcast.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
I have a very important question for you the at
the the open. I'm trying to remember what hol it was.
I think it was the seventeenth. Did you fart? Oh? Yeah,
that was me? Who was actually? Oh yeah? That was.

Speaker 7 (12:42):
That?

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Just a complete accident. I mean no, I.

Speaker 4 (12:45):
Mean it's I mean you're out there for like six hours,
like you're eating some different food over there.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
Some stuff's gonna happen. Did you know that it was
that loud?

Speaker 5 (12:56):
No?

Speaker 3 (12:56):
I mean you never know what the bosu.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Without hesitation that it's me. I ripped one, I let
it fly. I had like two hot dogs with Crowdah.

Speaker 4 (13:07):
When you to haul the scoffer on the planet, you
can just nonchalantly. I guess farting to is.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
Farting in the tea box, carrying around his son who's
got to blow out diaper after he wins a major
chane like Scotty Chef.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Who doesn't care. He's laid back. What else you got?
All right?

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Well we end with Baylor head coach Dave Randa, who
was at a Texas high school event coaches clinical sorts. Well,
I'm not going to give you any context. Let's just
listen to what he had to say during his press conference.

Speaker 8 (13:33):
There's a scene in The Wolf of Wall Street when
they're talking about throwing midgets and it's like, you know, hey,
this this midget, uh can he you know, can you
roll there? And he goes, no, he doesn't roll you throwing,
you know what I mean? And they're made for throwing.
And then after a while they start talking in they go,

(13:53):
you know what I think if you start talking, if
you start, if you they may think they know we're
making fun one of them. The midgets may think they
we're making fun of them, So then I must start.

Speaker 3 (14:05):
You know, they may get mad at us.

Speaker 8 (14:07):
And then the guys go, well, what we need to
do is make them think they're one of us, and
they go one of us, one of us, And I
think that's the thing we're coaching, call it and recruiting
is just that way they talk about acquiring players, getting
rid of players, just like that. And the whole thing
underneath all that is they make them think they're one

(14:29):
of us, you know what I mean. And it's like,
but you, I don't know, do you have to do
that to win?

Speaker 1 (14:36):
You know? That sucks?

Speaker 3 (14:38):
Yeah, sure, I'm still laughing. Oh if you.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
I mean, Smoke showed that to me and I was
truly rendered speechless for about three minutes. That scene in
The Wolf of Wall Street Leo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, they're
discussing hiring, you know, a little person to throw it
a spinning wheel of money. David Randa said, midget like
five times in there. So I think that that's what

(15:08):
you know, people are reacting.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
To that, and they comparison is wild.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
I mean, there was a like he's talking about rolling
them and tossing them.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
I mean, I get it. He's referencing the Wolf of
Wall Street.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
All of this, by the way, to again make an
analogy about recruiting and how too often in college football
coaches will make players feel like a part of the
proverbial family, only to treat them like commodities when it's
time to go. So like, there is a point in
there with value and I guess some nuance, but it
was distracted by how he delivered it.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
So was it the best way to make that point?

Speaker 5 (15:38):
Man?

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Maybe not, But I bet a lot of you are
going to go find this on the internet and send
it to everybody, you know, after you've heard it for
the first time.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
Especially when you watch him.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
You can see it around the twenty second mark, he's like, yeah,
I think I might have lost room, but I gotta
keep all chudging along with this analogy here it it.
My mind was just at you know, making that Microsoft
noise when you're computer busted down for like three minutes, like.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Real smoke can attest to this. When he was showing
this to me, I was sure this was an AI
spoof video. There was no way that it was real.
Somebody just unearthed this this afternoon. By the way, this
happened four days ago. Oh really, yeah, it happened July
twenty first, It happened four days ago, and somebody just
found the video today. So yeah, shout out. Dave Randa,
all right, well come back. Marty Snyder NBC Sports, Amazon

(16:23):
Turner NASCAR studio host and Pitt Reporter. Next on Sports
Radio ninety two seven WFNZ. Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ.

(16:51):
Happy Friday. Everybody, hope you're clocking out soon. If you
have it already, keep it right here on your home
for the Charlotte Sports Fan. Nate Wimberley WBTV. He back
in studio, coming up in thirty three minutes. A lot
of catching up to do with him, still panthers to
talk about. We get back to today's what we led with.
Happy Gilmour two is out on Netflix, And if you

(17:12):
were a nineties kid like me or just alive in
the nineties, I think most of us agree it was
the peak of humanity. I think humanity reached its full
potential in the nineteen nineties personally, and Adam Sandler was
at the top of that. Happy Gilmour, the original nineteen
ninety six came out very successful flick. But Happy Gilmore
two is being really or has been released on Netflix.

(17:33):
I'm excited, but I'm a little bit nervous about it
being a letdown. So we talked about that. We'll get
back to it. Still again, a lot to talk about,
but right now we talk some racing. They are in
Indianapolis this weekend. In fact, Marty Snyder, NBC Sports, Amazon,
NASCAR Studio host Pitt Reporter, he is joining us live
from Indianapolis ahead of the Brickyard four hundred at the

(17:53):
Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend. Let's bring him in, Marty Snyder,
It is hot as heck here. How's the weather in Indianapolis?

Speaker 1 (18:01):
Not much cooler. I left home this morning and I
was already hot in Charlotte today and it's hot here
in Indianapolis as well. And then we got the gift
of rain right when we were supposed to have practiced
this after KB and you know what happens in the
summertime when it rains, just gets more humid, and it's
been a scorcher since then. So but yeah, it's no

(18:24):
cooler in Indianapolis, and there's at home, okay.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
So kind of like Happy Gilmore in ninety six. I mean,
I guess the race in the movie have a similar
length of history. First race there was ninety four. Jeff
Gordon won that inaugural race, back then. There is a
lot of history there. You go to all these tracks,
you tell a lot of these stories over the years.
What stands out to you about your time at the
Brickyard and what it means to NASCAR fans?

Speaker 1 (18:46):
Well, I mean, and I was blessed enough to do
several Indianapolis five hundreds as well on the PC Sports yea,
And yeah, this place is always special to me. A
new museum this year here at im as far Tenus
Group did a great job with that as well. But
I think for the NASCAR guys, you know, there was
there was the road course for a few years, and

(19:07):
now it's back on the oval. And you know, Denny
Hamlin and I were talking in our rainfill on True
TV today, you know, the specialness is back with the
brick Yard four hundred because it's on the oval a
lot different than the road course. Just the feel of
the race feels bigger. But yeah, it's a it's a
it's a tough race to win. I think that's the

(19:28):
biggest thing that people don't grasp and and to me,
I've always view this race as sort of a playoff preview,
like all the teams bring kind of their playoff cars.
You know that they they want to bring to the playoffs.
They bring it to Indianapolis. Uh, you know, five races
to go before the playoffs. It will be the last
time this car runs before we get to the playoffs.

(19:48):
So so to me, it still has that prestige. It
still feels like a big win. And you know, when
you think about Denny Hamlin one last week, it's over.
Here's a guy who has not won this race. It's
the only crown jewl missing for Dinny Hamblet just announced
a new contract today with Joegibs Racing for a couple
more years. So I think this one's a big one
for Denny this weekend.

Speaker 3 (20:08):
Well, Marty's a smoke here.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
I mean, I know this is going to be a
big race for Denny because he almost won the race
back in twenty twenty before he had a flat tire
go down to the hard wreck. But I don't even
know if he's the one that wants this race to most.
It's his teammate Chase Briscoe, and Chase did win it Pocono,
he's its native. Who's your I mean, how big is
this race going to be for him? And could he
win it? This weekend.

Speaker 1 (20:29):
Yeah, I mean, I think he certainly could massive race
for Chase Brisco there they they brought the car that
they won Pocono with a few weeks ago, and and
for him to come home and like he said, you know,
he's only had really one shot on the oval last year,
Stuart Hoff. They didn't have a real shot to win

(20:50):
the race, to be honest, you know, like he told
me earlier today, this is his first real chance to
win the Brickyard four hundred and I think you know
he does. He'll have one the better cars. Back to
back second place finishes for him. Came home early, he
came to Indianapolis, I think on Monday, and his sister's
getting married today. Kind of made the wedding around around racing,

(21:12):
which her whole life has revolved around racing, you know,
because Chase's dad was a sprint car driver forever and
a pretty famous guy here in the Midwest. So so yeah,
so you know, his sister's getting married tonight, and so
he's got a lot going on this weekend. But yeah,
he is in great spirits. He loves being home, uh what.

(21:33):
And he won the road course in the Xcunity Series
in front of his hometown fans, but that was during covit,
so nobody was here to celebrate with him. So so
I think he would love to win this race and
it would meet so much to him. They put a
lot of effort in uh to you know, understanding what
he needs here, him understanding what Mam Martin trucks Junior

(21:53):
so fast here over the years. So I think Chase
Priscow is going to be one of the guys to
be on Sunday for sure.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
He mentioned Denny. I know, you know, both these guys.
Nobody's going to ask you to pick a side in this,
but you know, he and Larry mcrenold's publicly going at
it on social media about you know, Denny's proposal for
playoff changes to the format, and he's accusing Larry of
spreading disinformation about the twenty three eleven racing lawsuit against
NASCAR and you know, things of that nature, but just
you know, pulling out I guess the argument over the

(22:21):
proposed changes to the playoff format, like, do you have
a sense of what most people feel about that right
now within the NASCAR community about potential changes or you know,
if there's any swell of you know, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
I mean consensus in one way or the other.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
Well, there's this whole playoff committee thing, and Denny is
on the playoff committee, and so he's had to say
and a vote and all this and where it's headed
and what the thoughts are. And I think there's some
conjecture that the playoff system should change somewhat. I will
say this, it's never going to go back to just

(22:58):
a full season of points, and nor should it. NASCAR
introduce the playoffs, whether you like it or not, I
think the playoffs in some format are very good for NASCAR.
I think this elimination format is excellent. I don't see
anything wrong with it. Now, should it be a longer?
I think the format of having one race for a

(23:21):
championship that's kind of tough. And I think that's been
Denny's point the entire time, is that we need more
than one race for a championship. To make it a
three race championship series. I think that's more fair. I've
always been an advocate of changing the playoff races every year,
and the tracks complain. They're like, oh, we have date equity,

(23:42):
and we be our fans expect us to be there
at this time of the year. I don't care. I
think the playoff race has changed every year, and I
think the championship race should change every year. It should
rotate between five tracks, because if you keep the same format,
you're going to keep producing the same results. I mean,
like right now, going to Phoenix for a championship I

(24:05):
can tell you Hendrick Motorsports is at a disadvantage. They
just aren't good at Phoenix. They haven't been good at
Phoenix in a long time. They've tried and tried and
tried to get better at that race, but it's just
not their race track. So you got to move it around.
You got to make different championship races every year, in
my opinion, and keep being in at the same race track.
They get the same format forever and it's just not good.

(24:27):
I mean, you know, Jimmy Johnson won all those those
races because those same ten races were his ten best
race tracks. So that's a difficult way to make a format.
You've got to change it up every year. I'm a
big believer in that. I think Denny's a big believer
in that as well. But I think also I like
the idea of having multi races for a championship format

(24:49):
that's the three or whatever it winds up being. I
think that's the right way to go about it.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
Marty.

Speaker 4 (24:54):
We haven't really talked about the playoff bubble over the
last couple of weeks, and it's really tightened up with
a couple new winners and just some different results. But
as of right now, Bubba Wallace is the last guy
in on points, sixteen points ahead of Ryan Priest. But
maybe in Bubba's favor could be the fact that you're
going to the Brickyard this weekend, and specifically on the oval.

(25:14):
It's been one of his better tracks where he's gotten
multiple top five So you think we could see a
major shift in the bubble after this weekend's race.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
I don't know we'll see a major shift. We could
see Bubba certainly extend his lead. Yeah, three straight top
tens here at Indianapolis. It is a terrific race track
for Bubba Wallace and they have gotten better over the
last couple of weeks. He got his first ever top
ten at Dover last week to extend his lead. Smoke
and you know, Price had a really good stretch where

(25:43):
he was gaining every week and kind of making that
cut line pretty tight, and Bubba finally started to extend
that a little bit last week. I mean he got
down to three, they got down to two points at
one point, and it went from three to sixteen this week.
So yeah, I think this is a very good race
track for Bubba. I think there are you know, starting
at Iowa. When we pick up the coverage on NBC

(26:04):
and USA next week, I think there's a there's a
couple of interesting race tracks. Well, Ryan Priest could have
an advantage, Iowa being one, Watkins Glenn the next week
being one, and then you've got the wild card Daytona
to wrap up the regular season. So when we pick
up coverage next week on on NBC and USA, you're
going to kind of see a shift in the storylines

(26:26):
to Okay, the end season challenge is done, and now
it's four races to the playoffs, and it is going
to be heavy playoff push, just because that's what the
teams are talking about. They're really focused on this playoff
push and who can make a run. And I think
I think there's still a number of wildcard ratess left.
You look at Indianapolis this week, which could be a

(26:48):
fuel mile of rates. You've got Iowa, it's a short track,
you never know what can happen there. And then you've
got Watkins Glenn and you've got Daytona. So all these
interesting races that are coming before the end of the
regular season, and there's still time for new winners and
still time for the cut line to change.

Speaker 2 (27:04):
Marty Snyder, NBC Sports, Amazon, NASCAR's studio host Pitt Reporter
with us here on a Friday afternoon, As expected, NASCAR
announced that the Chicago Street Race will be omitted from
next year's schedule in twenty twenty six. We're told that's
to allow for improved logistics and planning, and they hope
that it returns in twenty seven, but they are going
out to San Diego to the naval base.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
I haven't talked to you in a couple of weeks.
What are your thoughts on that.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
I think it's great and I'm glad it's finally done.
There were some things with trying to get everything to
make sure it was good with the Navy, and everything
worked out fine with that finally, But yes, I think
it's going to be great. You know, my wife went
to college in San Diego, so I mean personally, I'm
excited to go out there and spend all the time.

(27:50):
And supposedly it's going to be back to back weeks
next year with San Diego and Sonoma back to back,
so that'll be a fun little mini West Coast swing
in the middle of the year if that come fruition.
But yeah, I think the San Diego course is going
to be incredible. Cornatto Island is beautiful for those who
have never been. I think kind of bringing that environment
from Chicago to San Diego and Cornado Island, it's going

(28:14):
to be incredible. And I think if you haven't watched
the announcement video that NASCAR put together this week, it's incredible.
It's worth watching. It's a couple of minutes, but the
drivers did a great job and they shot all that
a couple of weeks ago, and the announcement came off
really well. But I think it's going to be really
cool to have it there on Father's Day weekend, right

(28:35):
before the two hundred and fiftieth Birthday of America, and
I think it's going to be really neat to have
all that play out that way. But I'm interested to
see how they make the course. The one thing about Chicago.
That's been really cool KB is the repeatability of the track.
I mean, they had it down to a science, like
to the millimeter of how they had those walls, and

(28:56):
can they replicate that as well on the streets of
San die I think that's going to be a big
thing to see. But yeah, it's gonna be cool to
be in southern California for that next year. It'll wrap
up our Amazon part of the schedule next year, so
I'm really excited to see how all that comes together.

Speaker 2 (29:12):
All right, Marty, last thing training camp has officially begun,
So now I get to harass you for football opinions.
You know that, right, So now that training camp's now
our Carolina Panthers, I'm gonna go full Homer here. I'm
I'm cautiously optimistic. I want to be excited, but I've
been wounded just like you. I'm going into my ninth
year talking about this team on the radio, so I
am I'm hesitant to jump in with both feet, but man,

(29:34):
I want to believe.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
What are you thinking this year in terms of win loss?

Speaker 1 (29:38):
Right there? With to kV, I want to believe as well.
And then Mike Princelely hit you know, Bryce on day one?
What are you doing?

Speaker 6 (29:46):
Man?

Speaker 1 (29:46):
You know, hey, good job, but b don't do that again. No,
I'm afraid to even throw a number out there. Does
does nine sound okay? I mean? Is that?

Speaker 3 (29:57):
I don't know what I think.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
I think every Panthers fan out there would take nine,
don't you in a second?

Speaker 1 (30:03):
Yeah? I mean I think you've You've been very consistent
in saying for a couple of years, just constant improvement. Right,
let's just let's have constant improvement. And I love how
saying I only want to play for Dave Canalis, you know.
I mean, I like how you know you've got these
players who are saying they love the system and they

(30:24):
want to be a part of it. And you know,
I just like where the team is. I'm afraid to
say more than nine. I'm going to go with nine.
That I would love to have double digits, but it
just feels too lofty and too raggadocious to say double
digit wins this year.

Speaker 2 (30:37):
All Right, I get it. I'm right there with you, Marty.
We appreciate you, enjoy and they enjoy the brickyard. We'll
talk to you next Friday.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
We'll enjoy the heat. Here, everybody enjoy the heat at home.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
That's what we'll do.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
Marty Snyder, NBC Sports, Amazon, NASCAR Cup Series studio host
Pitt Reporter with us on the body Works plus Guest
Hotline Live ahead of the Brickyard four hundred coming up
this weekend. And while the Jeff Gordon win in the
inaugural Brickyard back in nineteen ninety four is arguably the
most memorable race, you know because it was the first
and you know, the Rainbow.

Speaker 3 (31:06):
Warrior won it. That was actually a good race.

Speaker 2 (31:07):
I know which one is your favorite of all time?
It's two thousand and five. It's that one. It's Tony
climbing the fence, a native Hoosier, a native Hoosier, emotional
winning at his hometown track.

Speaker 4 (31:19):
Well, that O seven win was also pretty badass too.
That was the first race on the ESPN. And when
he won the race, they were celebrating right at the
start finish line and Dave Burns asked him, how does
this win compared to the first one? Is like, this
wins for all the fans that take all the bs
from everyone else. That's where this one's for. And I'm like,
as a nine year old.

Speaker 3 (31:38):
Yeah, you tell Tony.

Speaker 2 (31:41):
That one was Yeah, I knew what it was. I
didn't even have to ask seven oh four five, seven
ninety six to ten. Hit us up on the fan
duel text line. Right now, we go to smoke on the.

Speaker 3 (31:48):
Headlights, all right.

Speaker 4 (31:52):
Well, we sometimes see some surprising cuts at the end
of training camp, not really at the beginning of training camp.
But that's what happened last night for the Las Vegas
Raiders as they have released tackle and Clemson legend Christian
Wilkins with the designation of terminated vested veteran. His time
in Las Vegas is now over due to Wilkins treating

(32:12):
his rehab to his foot injury he suffered last season.
That means the Raiders have avoided the remaining thirty five
point two million dollars guaranteed left on the contract why
he signed last year. So arguably already one of the
worst free agent decisions made in Raiders history, and they've
had quite a bit of doozies over the years. That's

(32:35):
you know what's even crazier about that is, I want
to say forty five minutes before I m could be
wrong about this, but he felt like forty five minutes
before that news came out. Bill Belichick yesterday in his
press conference randomly brought up Christian Wilkins.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
Ohough, that was like one of his favorite like yeah, he.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Said he was caught him the best recruit out of
New England like ever he wanted it, but he was
too far uprera and he just randomly brought up Christian
Wilkins in terms of recruiting and the greatest recruiting prospect
in the history of New England. And then like forty
five minutes later this news broke yesterday something else that
I want to mention on that front when we come back.
We'll also tell you who balled Out. Sports Radio ninety

(33:09):
two seven w F and Z.

Speaker 3 (33:20):
STY get on.

Speaker 5 (33:22):
Your feet.

Speaker 6 (33:27):
Intercepted by Julius Peppers and he takes it all the
way forty seven yards for the score.

Speaker 1 (33:36):
Here he comes.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
Jimmy Johnson.

Speaker 7 (33:44):
Brings it away from on the other end, only in
Paris with the untains.

Speaker 2 (33:56):
High performers, big time achievers. We call it who balled Out?
And it powered by high Performance real Estate Advisors and
the biggest dad gumballer of them all, Thomas L.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
Rudd.

Speaker 2 (34:05):
Go to High Performance real Estate dot Com and they'll
see you at the closing table.

Speaker 3 (34:08):
Smoke would you bring for the folks?

Speaker 4 (34:10):
Well, I'm gonna go with Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher
Eric Lower eight strong innings last night, only gave up
five hits, struck out six as the Blue Jays won
eleven to four, and he did at all with a
fat lip.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
Oh, then I am going to go with Terrist Marshall Junior. Huh,
Terris Marshall.

Speaker 3 (34:29):
Junior, you mean the former Carolina Panthers.

Speaker 2 (34:32):
Really showing out in training camp. And if you're wondering
what year it is, it's still twenty twenty five. And no,
he's not here any longer. Just in case you again
we're a bit confused. But apparently Philadelphia Eagles fans are
getting fired up at the prospect of Terras Marshall Junior
pushing the wide receiver room for the defending world champion,
Iggles A. J. Brown saying that Terris Marshall Junior is

(34:55):
quote coming along quite well. Honestly, even in the spring
he was making lot of catches. I know you guys
didn't see it, but he's going to make the room
very uncomfortable and that's a great thing.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
End quote. Now, Panthers fans know all about this.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
How many training camps would you say, three where we
truly started to, like, at least a healthy enough number
of people were buying into the terrorist Marshall Junior hype.

Speaker 3 (35:18):
All but last year, All but last year.

Speaker 2 (35:20):
Yeah, even last year, though he started off strong, he
had a couple of nice days. I was standing in
the end zone that day of joint practice where he
made a couple of great catches, and then there was
still that obligatory brain fart where he takes one off
the face mask on a beautiful throw from Bryce, and
it's like, all right there. It is always like it
can never be just clean and perfect. There always has

(35:41):
to be one ugly hiccup with Arris Marshall Junior. But
apparently in Philadelphia they're buying into the TMJ hype. I
guess they have the I guess they had the luxury
of doing things like that as the defending world champs.

Speaker 4 (35:53):
I don't know, but if AJ Brown's saying that Terris
is going to make that wide receiver room feel uncomfortable,
that is not good for the wide receiver room. J Brown,
my gosh, I mean, of all the teases in Panther's
history at wide receiver, He's okay, you said specifically at
wide receiver, he's not the best, Like, he's probably one
of the more frustrated. But who is to you the

(36:14):
biggest tease in the history of the Panthers as a
wide receiver. No, it could be anybody biggest tease. Just
like there was excitement, there was hype, there was anticipation,
you know, the talent was and not just like the
talent was there like with TMJ, the talent is there.

Speaker 3 (36:31):
Oh yeah, when they took him in.

Speaker 2 (36:32):
The second round, we knew it was about his history
with Joe Brady at the time, but he was on
the LSU squad with Justin Jefferson and Moss's kid and
Jamar Chase. Like, I mean, he was still like a
six four and a half wide receiver with huge hands
and a good catch radius and he was supposed to
be this elite red zone target and it never so,
I mean it was tantalizing the talent, the size, the

(36:54):
catch ratings, all of it.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
So he's not the biggest teas of all time? Who is?

Speaker 1 (37:00):
Know?

Speaker 4 (37:00):
Two names that come to mind immediately Belden Kelvin, especially
after his first year. He felt he was going to
be a seamless it was going to be seamless transition
from Steve to Kelvin.

Speaker 3 (37:10):
It wasn't.

Speaker 4 (37:11):
I'd also throw in Jeff Otah okay, because you thought,
oh my gosh, we just they just traded up for
a first a first round tackle of the future to
anchor the right side. You got Jordan Gross on one
side and Jeff o'tle on the other side, and that
two thousand and eight offensive line is arguably the best
offensive line in franchise history, and just injuries weight problems
just hindered the rest of his career.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
I'd also fro.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
Can I just throw it before? Can I get one
in there? Because I want to know your reaction to it?
Armani Edwards like that one to me.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
Again.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
I know he's an apstake guy, don't care about your
opinion of that, But like I actually thought they could
find a way to use him. I didn't think he'd
ever turned into an NFL quarterback, but I thought with
his athleticism, I thought that they or somebody but obviously here.
I thought they could find a way to make him
an effective player offensively. I never felt that you didn't
think that. No, okay, you already had better punt returns. Well, yeah,

(38:03):
better putt returners than Captain Munnerland here.

Speaker 3 (38:06):
So I mean I got an even better one.

Speaker 2 (38:09):
Okay, hit me, Vernon Butler, that's the one like that
that might be No, that's the one, right, Vernon Butler's
the one.

Speaker 4 (38:16):
That is one of the that twenty sixteen draft out.
They've got him, and better be glad he drafted James
Bradbury because outside of that, that was an awful draft.

Speaker 3 (38:25):
Remember Zach Sanchez? Oh god, yeah, do I remember Zach Sang?

Speaker 6 (38:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (38:30):
You thought Vernon was gonna be a seamless transition for
whoever who was going to leave first between Starr and
KK and that was clearly not the case. And the
last game that Vernon ever played was against the Colts
and he got thrown out and then he flipped the
bird to the Colts fans in Indianapolis. Perfect way to
sum up his career here in Carolina. I'd also just
because he actually wasn't a bad player, It's just it
was never gonna work out here because of the deal

(38:51):
they gave him and what they gave up Sean Gilbert.

Speaker 3 (38:55):
Yeah, okay, Sean Gilbert.

Speaker 4 (38:56):
Was good here, especially some years, but he was never
going to live up to what happened in nineteen ninety
six in Washington, and you know, holding out a year
wasn't going to help him. In nineteen ninety eight, the
fact that you gave up two first round picks and
one of those first round picks turned out to be
Chant eventually turned into Washington getting Champ Bailey because that
was the pick that was used for de Ricky Williams trade.
It just it was never gonna work out with Sean Gilbert.

(39:18):
I'll throw another one.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
Matt Khalil, Like, I thought there was a decent chance
that joining his brother, you know, getting out of cold Minneapolis,
you know, coming down south, better weather with big bro like,
I thought that one had a pretty good chance of
working out. I thought they could at least maybe get
their money's worth out of Mat Khalil. I was not
a fan of it when it happened. Well, you didn't
like the money. I knew that you, I know you.
It was like a fifty five million dollars deal in

(39:40):
free agency.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
You remember who was also in free agency at the time.
I would have rather given a chance to old man
Andrew Whitworth, who.

Speaker 3 (39:46):
Was That's right, Yeah, you were a big.

Speaker 4 (39:47):
Fan of that, and I was a bigger fan of
getting Russell o' kun here. Now I eventually got my way.
Unfortunately it was like three years later and Russell was
not the same. But Russell o'coon would have been better.
It just was a straight up nepotism higher Okay, all.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
Right, if you just tuning in, Tarris Marshall Junior is
apparently impressing quote unquote and Philadelphia Eagles training camp. A. J.
Brown is kind of, you know, endorsing Tarris Marshall Junior.
We've seen it before. Smoke called him one of the
biggest teases in Panthers history. Which player, to you was
the biggest teas a guy who was you know, I

(40:19):
had all the talent. There was a ton of hype,
a lot of expectation. You could see it, right, you
even saw glimpses of it, but it never came to fruition.
And I think Vernon Butler might be the best answer
of all. I'll also throw in the whole category itself.
Every single Panthers wide receiver that was not Steve Smith
from two thousand and five to two thousand and eight. Yeah,
jarre It or him him, Harry Colbert Carter, DJ Hackett. Yeah,

(40:51):
they brought in Rod Gardner. Keishawn Johnson's getting pretty popular
on the text line.

Speaker 3 (40:55):
That's the day.

Speaker 4 (40:55):
Hey, I can't wait to you know, I'm glad that
they got Dwayne Jarrett Man.

Speaker 3 (40:58):
I can't wait to work with him.

Speaker 4 (40:59):
Man, really work on his game and they can become
a superstar wide receiver. Five days later, Keishawn Johnson has
retired from the NFL.

Speaker 3 (41:07):
Wow real quick.

Speaker 2 (41:08):
Buffet enforcer says, I really thought Zack Sanchez, James Bradbury,
and Darryl Worley were gonna be stars for Carolina.

Speaker 3 (41:15):
I remember that, man.

Speaker 2 (41:17):
I looked up last night and this is this is
gonna be my ninth Panthers season coming up, this ninth consecutive.
This is my ninth Panthers season. Gay, God, you're here
for twenty seventeen. It would be horrible. I had to
quit the business by now. I at least got to
see Cam in the law firm in the in the
in New Orleans in a wild card game. But yeah,
I remember those conversations, you know, Zack Sanchez, Bradbury and Warley. Oh,

(41:38):
they got enough. That's plenty. They got enough back there.

Speaker 4 (41:41):
Best part about that was two weeks priors, one day
let go of Josh Norman and Dave got him into
the pre draft press conference. Is like, we're not going
to be reaching for d of couanas. And then he
drafts three corners back to back to back. It's like, okay,
but okay, at least Bradbury worked out, but not for
anyone else.

Speaker 2 (41:57):
All right, seven four five, seven ninety six ten us
up on the fan duel text line, we'll come back.
Let's talk to a guy who. I mean, this will
be my ninth season. I think this is going to
be Nate Wimberley's twenty eighth season covering all things Charlotte sports.
I think we'll check the math on that when Nate
Wimberley joins us in studio Next Sports Radio ninety two
to seven WF and Z
