Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet Today.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Sports Radio ninety two seven WF and ZKB and Smoke
with you'd be safe out there continuing to reign in
various parts of the region, and it's just nasty out there.
Going to be that way for a couple of days,
That's okay. It's expected to continue into Panthers and Browns
joint practice tomorrow. We'll have live reports from that coming
up tomorrow as well.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
I'll be out there.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Smoke's taking in his first practice of training camp as well,
so we'll have four eyeballs from this show on Panthers'
training camp tomorrow. So make sure to be here at
three o'clock. What you got, what's going on? Realize something.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Most of the time, when Carolina has success against the
Cleveland Browns, it's usually in an overcast setting nineteen ninety
nine overcast setting in Cleveland two thousand and two, overcast
and freezing cold with frigid temperatures. Carolina one deck Game
two thousand and six, overcast. I think, my mom us,
you've turned the memory stick back up. Yeah, I think
my mom and dad got Bowberry biscuits that Sunday smoke.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
How do you know that?
Speaker 5 (01:20):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (01:20):
No, it was six, yeah, six, you were nine, Yeah,
Carolina one that game it was like twenty one twelve.
You were nine years old and new Ron Foster got
banged up. Let's see the game to be lost in
twenty ten. That was a sunny game in Cleveland. That
was the Peyton Hills. That's the game that got Peyton
Hills on the Madden cover. You can't tell me otherwise.
Twenty fourteen overcast, that was a game Menzel got hurt.
(01:40):
And the last two times they played Cleveland it's been sunny.
So I'm starting to think Carolina is going to have
a great practice tomorrow because they usually do well when
it's overcast.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Going against the Browns.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Well, the thing that I've been thinking about, too, is
if this defense can't perform well against that stable of quarterbacks,
it's probably not a great sign. Like every year, we
the whole what can we take from training camp? How
much can we learn what what's real and what's not?
What can we overreact to and what shouldn't we And
(02:11):
you know this is one where I feel pretty good
saying if the Panthers defense gets smoked by the combination
of Joe Flacco and uh, should there even traveling to Charlotte?
I think he is okay, and Dylan Gabriel's hurt. They
just signed Tyler Snowpuntley, so I'm assuming that he's coming.
If this defense cannot stand up to that offense, I
might be I might start to get a little bit
(02:32):
worried that.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
And wonder running backs is not even playing right now
because he's in legal trouble. Uh in Quishan Judkins, So
you got that problem too. Yeah, I will say though,
the main the main thing to look out for is
the battle in the trench is specifically Carolina's offensive line
against that Brown's defensive line, not only because of Miles Garrett,
but my beloved Mason Graham.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Is on that defensive line too. You do love Mason Graham.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Mason Graham and Miles Garrett. My god, what a defensive line.
The biggest mediast broccoli head.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
That ever lived. Bason Grant. Yeah, yea yea yeah, man.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
If all you would have fell to eight no offense,
tedor Ara, but not Bason Grammle's my guy, all right,
So real quick. If you're just tuning in, you missed
a really fun and interesting conversation earlier in the show.
I am asking for who you think is the most
disrespected individual in the history of Charlotte sports. And you
might think maybe that's a big question.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Yeah it is. And you're smart people. I leave things
open ended, open to interpretation because you're smart and creative people.
And I like when you send me your versions of answers.
So I'm talking athlete, coach, general manager, other executive owner,
even media member, like whatever, you can come up with.
Which individual in the year twenty twenty five do you
(03:42):
look at and think, Man, that guy still doesn't get
his due. He's still disrespected for no reason, doesn't get
enough credit for what he or she did or I
guess maybe did not do. But like, who was the
most disrespected individual in the history of Charlotte sports, not
just pro sports. Could be anybody. Your answer could be
Bif Pogying that's fine. Uh, but you know, hit me
up and let me know seven oh four, five, seven
(04:02):
oh ninety six ten. I'm sorry, it definitely would not
be Biff Pogi.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Great questions that's it. That's it.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
That's all you came with. Oh, you're gonna want to
talk to me and we win the American Mission. Oh,
it was the AAC at the time. They're really sticklers
about that. Remember when I had the interview with Tim Pernetti, Yes,
an Army Navy, right at Army Navy, I said, I
set across from and sat down with the commissioner of
the now American Conference formerly the AAC, and my muscle
(04:30):
memory had you know, I was calling them the AAC
and the conversation and he was like, uh uh, the
American It's we don't go by that anymore. That's defunct.
We don't that's been retired. Okay, we're the American Conference,
which I get, like, I understand where they're coming from.
I'd rather be called the American Conference too, But yeah,
that's that's definitely a thing, all right. Seven oh four, five,
(04:50):
seven oh ninety six ten. Hit us up on the
fan duel text line. Lots of answers coming in. There
was one about David Tepper. I wanted to read. Oh,
I got to get back to that real quick. Some
there are a few people taking up for David Tepper,
saying that he takes too much disrespect. I don't know,
man Like, I think it's been about the right amount
(05:11):
of disrespect. I'm not gonna lie. I think it's been
about the right amount of criticism and lack of at
times like can you take it too far? Absolutely? Do
I think David Tepper is a bad guy?
Speaker 3 (05:22):
No, I don't.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
But there's also like that timeless story of and please,
my northern friends, don't take this, don't take offense to this.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
I'm married one of your women, all right, I love y'all.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
All right, But like one of those Northeastern carpetbaggers coming
down south, taking over, you know, wanting to make remake
things in his image, has no connection to the city.
There's the rock Hill fiasco, There's the throwing of the drink,
there's the you know, running cam Newton out of town,
firing ron reve it. There's a lot of change. There
was a lot of change orchestrated by a guy, you know,
(05:52):
from the I don't know. I guess we're calling Pennsylvania
the Northeast, you know, maybe the Ross Belt. I don't
know how you've referred to it, but say ross Bell
for Pistas. I'm fine with that. Doesn't matter. But I
think David Tepper's made enough sell you know, unforced errors
that he has deserved a lot of the criticism, some
has been excessive. And I do believe, in my heart
of hearts, we are watching David Tepper start to turn
things around as the owner of the Panthers. Now, that
(06:14):
might be more heart than head, and I'll, you know,
if I have to admit to that at some point,
I'll gladly do that. But maybe not gladly I'll do that.
But I do think we're watching the owner get better.
And I think that he's finding his groove. I think
he's hired better people, he's allowing them to do their jobs,
and he's being a resource inside the building as opposed
to trying to dictate and force everything to go and
(06:35):
be his way of doing things.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
And that's credit to him.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
And I hope we're celebrating David Tepper in a much
larger way here in the not too distant future. Seven
oh four five, seven oh ninety six ten Hit us
up on the fan duel text line. Right now we
go to smoke with the best audio in sports.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
What did you say? You what?
Speaker 4 (06:52):
What did you say?
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Hold up?
Speaker 3 (06:54):
Wait, a minute, send me right, you son.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
What I mean by that is muggsy bogues what Homer
Jeff said, muggsy bogues.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
How he's one of the most belongs. I think he's
the opposite of disrespecting. I think he is. Yes, beloved
is the right word.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Sweet Cheeks is the latest to also say James Parrego,
James Barrego has become a cult like figure in a
way that was not true two years ago. Like he
had his support two years ago. Three years ago, there
were a lot of us saying, this is dumb, this
is wrong, this is Michael being reactionary, this is embarrassing. Mike,
don't do this, and he did it anyway, But there
were plenty of people who were so fed up with
the play and ass kickings that they were like, a,
(07:32):
he just lost the locker room.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Like I don't think he has, and he's winning.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
But like now a couple of years later, James Barrego
has like a ninety percent approval rating among the fan base,
doesn't he exactly? Definitely, It's crazy how fast that's happened. Anyway, Marian,
what you got all right?
Speaker 4 (07:48):
Earlier today on the Mack and Bones Show, it was
a all you can eat Panthers interview buffet. And earlier
on the show, they had head coach Dave Canalis right
before practice, and you know, Mac asked him a really
great que question because Mac got pertured by this during
last season, and that's the fact that Dave Canalis wouldn't
talk about Bryce publicly in between the benching and when
(08:09):
he started his next game in Denver, and Dave Canalis
actually explained to Mac why he did that during his
first year as a head coach.
Speaker 6 (08:16):
Yes, and twofold though, one, because it's not all about Bryce, Okay,
everybody wants to know. It's about Panthers football. And he'll
be the first one to get up here and tell
you that. Yeah, yeah, we got to do the best
thing for the team, you know, first and foremost. And
this is the twenty twenty five Panthers, And yes, we
have certain guys that are going to be in the
front of the headlines and tell his story.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
So number one, it was doing best for the team.
Speaker 6 (08:38):
Number Two, with all that we were talking about, I
felt like those were really private conversations. I felt like
that was between he and I, that was between Will Harriger,
the quarterbacks coach, and Brad Itzick, the offensive coordinator, and
Bryce and those those men in that quarterback room to
work on things and just to like give him space
to work on his craft and just like keep pushing.
(08:59):
And the credit to Bryce, you know, for grinding every day.
The credit to Bryce for continuing to lead.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
He was telling me.
Speaker 6 (09:08):
Regardless of I don't agree with your decision, I'm not
happy about it, I'm gonna come here and go to work,
and this is my team. And he made it very
clear by leading by putting himself in front of the guys,
by touching everyone as they come into the locker room,
as they go out. You know, he just stayed in
front with that mentality, and that to me is like
(09:28):
when he got back out there, he was like, and
this storyline's over with. This is my team, coach, And wow,
I love that, and I want I want that to
happen more and more for our team, where they put
the coaches to the side and say, hey, this is
our team, give us the information we need.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
I'm so glad. Kudos to Mac for asking that question.
I'm really glad he asked it this morning. Well done
by those guys. And I love Dave's answer even more.
It also underscores the fact that most of the credit
goes to Bryce. Like Dave made a tough decision, Dave
gets credit for recognizing what the issue was, listening to
the locker room, doing what was in the best interest
to Bryce, even if it came with backlash and an
(10:09):
overwhelming media reaction and fan reaction. But that's all Bryce
Young at the end of the day, and it's why
so many people, following his strong finish to the back
half of the year last year, learning more about him,
feel really good about him going into this year because
Bryce is mentally tough. Bryce has it between the ears.
He's got to stay healthy, he's got to complete the passes,
(10:31):
he's got to continue to play clutch football. But that's
why I think a lot of people have bought in
on Bryce Young, even if cautiously so, because the kid
is mentally tough, and you love hearing that story.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
What else you got? All right?
Speaker 4 (10:43):
Also on the show earlier this morning was Panthers GM
Dan Morgan, and we've heard a lot about Shaw Smith
Wade's hype throughout the first couple of weeks of training camp.
Mike Key had him as d MVP of the first
week of Training Camp in the Charlot Observer, and that
hype's only going to continue after you hear what Dan
Morgan told Mack and Bam.
Speaker 7 (11:02):
You know, I think the biggest thing with Sean you see,
is just the confidence that he's grown in the defense,
how smart he is. He can play multiple positions within
the defense, and he's just a fiery competitor.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
So we love having him out there.
Speaker 7 (11:18):
You know, I don't really see him leaving the field
during the game, you know, just because he can do
so much and he's such a playmaker. So yeah, we're
lucky to have him.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Oh, they got me fired up. They got me fired
up this morning.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Like they think they got a dude in Shaw Smith Wade,
And I think they might have a dude in shaw
Smith Wade too. Like he has in the three practices
I've been to, he has stood out every single time,
and he's been you heard Mike Kay yesterday on the
show that he's been the defensive MVP of Training Camp. Now,
(11:52):
this is also a moment where we could launch into
a conversation about the all time Training Camp MVPs and
Training Camp All Stars for the Carolina Anthers that turned
out to be not so great on the field in
the regular season. David Gettis, there you go. But this
one feels for real, and he's putting in the work
on the field and he's showing it right. He's twenty
(12:14):
two years old. He's not a big guy. He's five
ten bucks seventy five buck eighty. He's not a big corner.
But he seems to have really good instincts and he's
always around the football. And I watched him bait Bryce
into an interception in the end zone last I think
that was Friday. That was really crafty, like really really
good stuff. It wasn't just that he was there in
(12:36):
the right place at the right time. He baited Bryce
into that interception in the back of the end zone.
So I for all the handwringing about the cornerback room,
and we may return to that. We may come back
to it, you know, a couple of weeks into the
season if they're getting cooked defensively. But behind JC Horn
and Mike Jack, we had some concerns about that. You know,
could Shaw Smith Wade step up and be that slot
corner being effective one here, Dan tell it, he's not
(12:57):
coming off the field. Corey Thornton has looked really strong
in training camp too, the former Louisville cornerback, still a
very young guy at twenty four years old, a bigger
corner two. So they seemed to like that whole answer
is on the roster thing. They are living it and
believing it over there on the defensive side, in particular
in the second and third levels.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
Absolutely, And now we end with the Raw Room podcast.
It's actually a podcast that in part is hosted by
Panthers assistant coach Darren Bates, but he's not on this
edition of the show. As on the latest edition of
the show, they had Colorado's athletic director along with Jalen
Collins and former offensive lineman King Dunlap badass name, and
(13:36):
King had to admit to something very disgusting he did
a couple of years back.
Speaker 8 (13:42):
Lo, they don't have Zaxby's up there in Colorado.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
She wanted some Zaxy.
Speaker 8 (13:45):
When we get Zaxby, he's be talking about the food,
you know, hanging in chatting, and then King King mentioned
something that he used to do back in his four
hundred pounds days.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
What'd you do? King said? He used to put zoom
and fa chat Chat, Brace yourselves. King said that he
put Zack sauce.
Speaker 8 (14:09):
On anything in his on everything in his sweet tea,
on everything in his sweet tea.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
On everything. Why in because it was that good.
Speaker 8 (14:18):
He was alive when he said good when he said everything, every, everything, everything.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
But there was a poet a time where it was happening.
Speaker 8 (14:27):
It was on the tenders, the fries, the wings beyond
fats and the sweet and the sweet, crazy as hell.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
It was the thing you really did and listen for
the internet. I really did and listen chat.
Speaker 8 (14:45):
It didn't last long like and I don't still do it,
But there was a poet in time where it was
that good.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Yeah, it was that and listen chat put on everything
you would do it for like full time sake again
maybe okay, that that's just gross. Did you have you
eaten the zaxbece? You have? Right?
Speaker 5 (14:58):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Yeah, yeah, okay, but well okay, sorry, silly question. Are
you a Zaxby's guy?
Speaker 3 (15:02):
I'm gonna like it, I don't love it. Have you
had the Zack sauce? Yes? Two? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Like you know that it's like a creamy, peppery, smoky sauce. Yeah,
pouring that into sweet tea is foul. I mean just foul.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
I feel like I would at least gag, if not
throw up a little bit.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
It is nasty. I'm trying not to overdo it here,
but like that's disgusting, right, Like that's not like, hey,
let's try to dip a fry in a frosty at Wendy's.
That's not you know, that's delicious. Oh my gosh, that's amazing.
Dumping a creamy, smoky, peppery sauce into your sweet tea,
any drink for that matter, is foul.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Sidebar.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Mom and Dad came into town this WEEKENDU went to
church with me and the wife and the kids. Then
we went to lunch. Right after I watched my father
do something I've never seen the man do in my
entire life. He looked at the waitress and he's said,
do you have unsweet tea?
Speaker 3 (16:03):
I know, I know now.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
In Randy's defense, he's on a health kick right now
and he's lost about twenty pounds and he's looking great.
Shout out to Pops. Like Dad's he's getting We're both
at it. I want to be shredded by the time
I'm forty. I'm down twenty five pounds. Dad's down twenty
You know, he wants to get back into great shape.
He's still playing pick up all with the with his
buddies twice a week, like in his mid sixties. So
Dad wants to get into great shape. But just imagine
(16:28):
a man who I mean. I watched this man make
hundreds of pictures of sweet tea growing up, and to
listen to him look at a waitress and ask for
unsweet tea. I was both proud of him and mortified
at the exact same time.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Real question, did he put into sweet low because my
parents will last sweet tea, but they'll put like some
sweetel alone just because some of these places just put
damn Nah.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
He was just raw dogging unsweet tea. Yeah it was.
I was again proud of him, but mortified and kind
of sad for him because I know he doesn't like it.
You just there's there's no you can't possibly like that.
But yeah, which is like it was like what I
don't know even how to describe it. Honestly, that's what
did you say? The best audio in the world of sports.
When we return Joe Ovius, Ovius and Julio podcast, we
(17:12):
run the Gamut, some canes, some sports media, some college football.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
We get to it all.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Next Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn ZE. Yeah, Sports
(17:41):
Radio ninety two seven wfn Z. The weather's terrible, but
the radio is great. We think so. Anyway, there are
a lot of you enjoying it with us. We appreciate
you hanging out and filling up the FanDuel text line
with your takes, your jokes, your thoughts on unsweet tea
most recently, and also your thoughts on who was the
most disrespect person in the history of Charlotte Sports doesn't
(18:03):
have to be confined to pro sports, though I suspect
most of them will be, and honestly have been. But athlete, coach,
general manager, other executive media member, organizing official agent, whoever
it may be, Who's the person in twenty twenty five
that you think, Man, they just don't get their due
or they're far too disrespected. David Tepper's come up a
(18:24):
few times, for sure. Janey and rock Hill just texted
in to say that David Tepper needs to put us
out his ego and apologize. To rock Hill said what
he did affected the people's reputation, jobs, futures a lot
of longtime fans and ticket owners gave the Panthers up
because of him. I'm a Panther fan, not a Tepper fan.
I'm still here, but it hasn't been easy. Real quick, Jane,
(18:46):
I'm sure David Tepper as regrets. I do hope that
you feel the same way about the rock Hill politicians
though that were instrumental in that, and quite frankly, as
I said at the time, and I stand by it,
I hope you have or will be soon voting them
all out because they're incompetent and dishonest.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
So I'll leave it at that. Let's welcome in and
welcome back.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Joe Ovious of the Ovious and Julio podcast Triangle Influencer
back with us here on this rainy Tuesday afternoon. Joe,
I appreciate you, brother.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
What's going on?
Speaker 5 (19:15):
Wait, you're telling me that people are saying that David
Tepper has been disrespected.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
H Yes, there are some who think that he is
too disrespected in the year twenty twenty.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
These people related to the Tepper family. Is this a
David Tepper burner phone that's texting the hot law.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Can neither confirm nor deny. I have no idea, but
I can't tell you it hasn't been the majority by
any long, by any you know, stretch of the imagination.
But there have been a handful who believe that he
takes too much heat.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
Joe, I think he gets an appropriate level of heat.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
That's also does it's not.
Speaker 5 (19:51):
Helping he gets I think it's like, I think he
gets an appropriate level of heat for what has happened
under his stewardship of the Carolina Panthers and until they
actually win something of note, rather than just going on
positive camp vibes only coming to a T shirt near
you that yeah, man, like win something, give me something
(20:15):
more than concerts, which was like the lowest bar thing
you could have done in Charlotte after the previous owner.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
You see what I'm saying I do. And so you know,
it's funny. Somebody asked me earlier. They said, you know, KB,
he took a lot of heat for the perception being
that he handpicked Bryce Young. Now I've disputed that since
the beginning. I think that has been a little bit overblown.
But the point was, Hey, if it turns out that
he's right about Bryce, don't we have to apologize because
it gets to take a victory lap.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
I mean to me, like yes and no.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
I joke that if I'm David Tepper and Bryce goes
in balls out this year, I'm probably going to be
insufferable inside of the building and remind everybody this was
the guy that I wanted.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
So I don't know your thoughts on that.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
I mean to me, if you're talking about disrespect, I'll
just say that Cam Newton is probably the most disrespected
athlete to come out of Charlotte.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
He's popular, I mean, he's popular on the sex line
for sure.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
I was gonna say in terms of disrespect, I mean,
we had things being run in the newspaper about his
dances for Heaven's sake, But anyway, that's in here nor
there about Bryce Yaling and things like that. You know,
it's something that Jillian and I try to take a
little bit more pragmatic approach because we're not there, right,
(21:27):
I don't have to I don't have to do what
you do, uh where you're talking about and trying to
sell position battles on a daily basis. Like I jokingly
texted Walker the other day when he was like legitimately
with a serious face talking about like the wide receiver
groups and things like that. And my general attitude is
(21:48):
I think it's good that the Carolina Panthers have a
wide receiver position battle, which makes it seem like there's
been at least some upgrade at that position, that there
are decisions to make as to who gets to make
this team. I think that's a positive note. But let's
also not act like it's Jerry Rice and the crew.
(22:09):
You see what I'm getting at. There's some like serious
questions that have to be To me, the biggest storyline
for the Panthers isn't these faux high you know, all
the hype that comes out of these camp clips that
I mean, look, we're talking glorified practice here. What I'm
more curious about is Dave Canalis actually using the preseason
(22:29):
to get some work done rather than hiding things, because
I think we saw that last year. If this wide
receiver group is what you think it is, if you
think Bryce Young can take some sort of next step forward,
I want to see this in the preseason. Don't give
me like two passes and get out of there. Work
on it, because they cannot afford to start the season
off slow and then have all the stuff come right
(22:52):
back to all. You know what it was Alamas last year.
You got to come out of the gates hop in
that regard for Bryce Young and of course, to me,
the thing that is the most it's important that defense
has to at least bend. I'm not asking for a
great defense. I'm just looking for a basic average defense
out of the Panthers.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Then we can talk.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Yeah, no, I hear you on that now, Joe, speaking
of the NFL, let me I want to stay in
that realm. But you know, I'm known for having a
particular interest in sports business, sports media, you even more so,
I think, especially on the sports media side. The news
of ESPN and NFL, this billion dollar deal where ESPN
is going to be assuming the responsibility of it seems
(23:31):
much of the NFL's media properties, including Red Zone and
a few other things.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
I mean, this is a massive deal.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
But what does it mean to you and what does
it signal to you about both the future of each
respective entity. But I guess more specifically, what you know,
how how much the NFL wants to be involved.
Speaker 3 (23:47):
In the media side.
Speaker 5 (23:49):
I cannot wait to have Steven A. Smith host Red
Channel Redo.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Can't you you think that's coming?
Speaker 5 (23:56):
About that. Oh yeah, I mean, come on, they're paying
these guys all this money. They have to get their
money's worth, right. I think what this What this indicates
to me, and I think your audience understands this because
I listened to you guys too, is that NFL is king, right,
The NFL is king, and ESPN is making a very
(24:18):
calculated decision to get in bed with the league they
feel is most important to their survival. So hold on
a second. I gotta do a little like parenting here, Jacob.
You good, get your hog, your stuff.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
And we're gonna go. Okay.
Speaker 5 (24:34):
Hey, man, by the way, listen to uh, listen to
Ovi's and Julio and give me the the ad dollars
because this travel hockey ain't paying for itself, guys.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (24:43):
So anyway, So what this to me indicates is if
you're the SEC, you're the ACC. Actually, you can look
this up. I just saw this headline recently that the
usg eight and it paced a television deal that is
not going to be great. You see this with with
(25:05):
F one. Remember when F one was like the hottest
thing going and people were claiming they're going to get
these crazy media rights ESPN went back to F one
and said, hey, man, love you, but we don't think
you're worth this much. And now they're scrambling to go
find into the television deal. We saw this with Major
League Baseball in ESPN. This is a sign to everybody
that is not named the NFL that these expected paydays
(25:28):
for your next media rights deals are not going to
be what you think it is, because we feel that
the thing that puts us over the top, the thing
that is truly part of our survival, is this NFL.
And that's why you'll get eighteen games and Roger Goodell
will continue to have the price the.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
Brick go up.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
So I think that's the thing I'm looking at. What
does it mean for everybody else that the NFL and
the ESPN are getting in bed together? And I don't
think it's I don't think it's a good future for
everybody else, all.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Right, Joe Ovius, Ovius and Julio podcast. Download it. Listen
to what the kidney hockey gear? He's hanging it out
out with us here on the hotline.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
What's that like?
Speaker 2 (26:02):
By the way, Like, I'm not that I took my
kid to his first my kids, but my son in particular,
took him to fan fast on Saturday first, like, real
big stadium football experience for him. You're a travel sports dad,
like hockey specifically?
Speaker 3 (26:14):
What how I don't know. I look ahead and.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
I'm like, you know, are travel sport's going to be
the same, Like, what's your experience has a travel sports
dad been?
Speaker 3 (26:22):
Like, I think it's twofold.
Speaker 5 (26:25):
The first one is you can't make your kids like
the stuff that you like, sure, right, Like that's that's
a huge mistake. That's one thing that I've tried my
best to like let them be their own saying, right,
let them like their own stuff. You don't want a
miniature version of you. It's not like that's not the goal, right,
So all you can really do as a fun is work,
(26:47):
make some money, and then be able to put them
in the best position to seek the things that interest them.
Does that make sense?
Speaker 3 (26:53):
Mm hm.
Speaker 5 (26:54):
So if you're take them the fans fast, hey, if
they like it, great, If they don't, it's not the
end of the world. I think that's I think that's
something that a lot of us as dads have a
hard time processing in that Well, wait a minute, I
like to go into.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Football games growing up. I like doing this growing up.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
Why don't you? Man? It is what it is. Things
are different. So with Jacob in particular, he's always had
an interest in hockey, So it gets back to that, hey,
what can you do to help facilitate his interest and
can keep that going and growing. The problem that you
run into isn't the kids. The kids are going to
be okay, it's the parents. And the parents continue to
(27:31):
drive the cost of participating up because you all, well,
I need my kid to go get this special training.
I need to have him have the super duper hockey
stick with the forty flex, and these skates aren't good enough.
I need to get him the eight hundred dollars power skates.
And there's a lot of other adults who pray on
(27:52):
those parents, who are always looking for that edge. And
I think the cost of this stuff has gone up
exponentially across all you sports that you are really hurting
the future of sports fandom.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Oh I'm gonna stop.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
I was aghast a couple of months ago when I
found out that, you know that we had parents buying
ten year olds five hundred dollars baseball bets like I
wanted to throw, but at the idea like why is
that they're they're gonna be hitting rocks with it in
the second practice.
Speaker 5 (28:23):
And there's also the specialization too, right, you know, you
go back to the media thing. It's all NFL all
the time. We came up at a time where we
had a general interest in a bunch of different sports,
and I think a lot of that had to do
with the fact that we played a bunch of different
sports growing up with hockey. If I want to, and
this is true of all sports now, baseball included. If
I want to, and to a certain extent, I have,
(28:44):
it's hockey three sixty five, dude. There's camps there, you
have your season. The hockey season starts up here relatively soon.
Then there's spring. Then you can send them off to
these summer league games, like like the summer tournaments. It's
non stop. And then again, these outside organizations will speed
into that fear as a parent, that will if I
(29:06):
don't do this, my kid's gonna fall behind. And really,
in my particular case, what's my younger son ultimately gonna do.
Is he gonna play in the NHL? Nah man, He's
just enjoying being with his teammates. He's enjoyed playing hockey,
and eventually he's probably gonna be a beer league guy
that's hanging out with his boys playing at eleven thirty
at night here in Raleigh. You see what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Oh no, listen, I know exactly what you'rant.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
I don't want to go all day, but I think
it's a fascinating conversation because, like, my wife is a
part of like some of the mom groups on Facebook,
and all she did was it Like I got a
three year old son, who I'm not kidding you, Joe. Like,
the two things he loves most are are playing baseball,
which he still has no real concept of. He just
likes his glove and his ball and playing with dad.
And he likes playing rock and roll. Right, So my
wife wants to let him play t ball at three
years old. He's excited about it, and we got these
(29:50):
moms like you can't believe you're trying to force it
on your son at three years It's like, no, we
want him to run and play and have a good time.
And I don't expect him to be a big leaguer.
I just want him to go have fun.
Speaker 5 (30:00):
Well, I would ask those parents I'm like, are you
also the same ones who are sweating what preschool they
go to?
Speaker 3 (30:04):
Exactly about it?
Speaker 5 (30:07):
The amount of freak out that took place over which
preschool your kid's gonna go to, It's hilarious to me.
All I want my kid to accomplish coming out of
preschool is have you stopped wetting your pants?
Speaker 3 (30:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (30:18):
And are you not eating.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
Glue and scissors? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (30:22):
Yeah? And check?
Speaker 3 (30:24):
All right, we are good.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Let's go to kindergarten where hopefully you'll drop the nap.
Speaker 8 (30:29):
You know.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
It's like, let's be real about what we're trying to
accomplish in preschool.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
Man.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
But again, as always, parents ruin everything, adults ruin everything,
and the kids can't live. So I did not realize
we would morph this into dad talk. But I'm guessing
there's probably some people in your audience that are going, hell, yeah, preschool.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Well listen, it happens.
Speaker 2 (30:54):
I think, I know we have a lot of dads
in the audience, and you'd be maybe surprised to know
that a week and a half ago, we had a
full blown segment on bands on my marching band on
the show.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
So, man, hey, I got.
Speaker 5 (31:03):
A senior, I got a senior at en Low in
marching band. And let me tell you, I've been to
enough marching band competitions with his dad that I am
flabbergasted that marching bands have groupies. So all this is
to say, WHOA, I'm gonna close on this. I'm gonna
close on this because I know you're up against the break, right,
you gotta go right. Yeah, I hear about the male
(31:24):
loneliness epidemic that's been a headline lately, like, oh, you know,
stuff out here to be a guy. You know, women
don't want to talk to me, blah blah blah blah blah.
Let me explain something to you. That's a skill issue.
Because if I can go to a marching band competition
and see the and I my son's included these skinny
(31:44):
trumpet playing dudes get girls to stem them brownie telegrams
from the stands because the broccoli haired boy looks cute.
That's a skill issue. So maybe get into something like
it and open your eyes and maybe you won't be lonely.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
Tell Jacob I said, good luck and have fun. We'll
talk to you soon, Buddy, Pound tech One.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
Thank you man, Joe Ovius and Julio podcast Mitch Talk
some college football there, but got away from US seven
oh four five seven ninety six to ten. Hit us
up on the fan duel text line, I got a lot.
We have to get to good. It's a good thing.
We have a wide open five o'clock hour right now.
We go to smoke on the headlines.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
I gotta follow that up. Okay, some good and bad
news here for Charlotte f C. First, let's get the
bad news out of the way. Unfortunately, Dean Smith, during
his press conference earlier today said that pet Bel has
a hamstring injury like people feared, and that the way
it is presented, quote unquote, it looks like more of
a four to six week injury for arguably Charlott f
(32:47):
c's best player on the pitch this year. But the
good news is that they just got a big signing
from across the pond, Henry Tofalo.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
I think I said his name. I think you said
the name right.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
Harry Tofalo has been the big news signing that they got.
It was announced officially earlier this morning, as Charlott f
C gets a big player, but unfortunately they lose their
best player, arguably to injury for the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
All right, we'll come back.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
The text line is gold right now that we have
lots of people texting it how much they love the
obvious conversation. One guy didn't, Josh from Iron Station like,
what happened?
Speaker 3 (33:20):
Is this? Sports are youth sports? Sports? Yeah they are.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
AJ's also saying, all right, smoke sounds like you need
to order a trumpet, my guy.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
That's a great text. All I've know is I've heard
some stories and he's not lying about those.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Well, come back. We'll tell you who bought out. Sports
Radio ninety two seven wfn Z.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
Sety get on.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
Your beat, intercepted by Julius Peppers and he takes it
all the way.
Speaker 3 (33:58):
Forty seven yards are the score?
Speaker 5 (34:01):
Here come Jimmy Johnson runs away with him.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
High performers, big time achievers. We call it Who balled
Out and it's powered by high Performance real Estate Advisors
and the biggest dad gumballer of them all, Thomas L.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Rodd.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
Go to High Performance real Estate dot Com and they'll
see you at the closing table.
Speaker 3 (34:35):
Smoke what you bring for the people.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
Gotta go with Kyle Schwarber three of five from the
plate last night, against the Orioles, including two home runs
six RBI's.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
One of those.
Speaker 4 (34:43):
Homers was a Grand Salami, as he now finds himself
at forty home runs in a year we just started August.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
Have you seen the recent MLB I'm sorry, n L
m VP odds, No, I have not.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
He's on them. I mean, you know that, right.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
It feels like it's Show Hayes Award to lose, right
at this point. Kyle Schwarber quiet, Kyle Schwarber is second
in the odds for n L MVP, and he just
I think he moved ahead of Pete crow Armstrong like
a week or two ago. Shoe a Otani's minus four
sixty nine to win to win the MVP, all right,
so he's probably gonna win the MVP. But Kyle Schwarber
(35:24):
is having an unreal season with forty dongs and his
latest one was what his one thousandth career hit.
Speaker 4 (35:31):
No, I'm sorry, one thing. He just got over one
thousand like a week or two ago.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
But yeah, he wasn't his one thousandth career hit a
home run, though I believe it was.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
It was.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
I mean the fact that Kyle Schwarber is second in
the MVP odds in the National League is objectively insane.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
If I would have told you that five years ago,
you would have called me insane.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
He's also one of the most underappreciated hitters of his generation.
Speaker 3 (35:52):
Oh I love him.
Speaker 4 (35:53):
He's got like the second or third most prettiest swing
in baseball right now.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
Yeah, no, I agree with that. Oh my gosh, swore
bombs on to right field.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
No, he's got the He somehow managed to take the
former D one slugger turned slow pitch Softball All Star
swing and kept it in Major League baseball. I love
watching Kyle Schwarber swing a bat, all right, real quick
for me. Your guy, Kyrin Williams signed a three year,
thirty three million dollar extension with the LA Rams. Honestly
(36:21):
thought that was a little low for him with the
way he's been playing for him over the last two years.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, No, I agree. I agree.
Speaker 2 (36:26):
That's who balled out seven oh four or five seven
of ninety six ten you con Adams said, Kyle Schwarber
is the definition of a guy who has a mashing
Tator swing. He does like we talk about Griffy having
the prettiest swing of all time Barry Bonds is in
the conversation of prettiest swing of all time, I want
Kyle Schwarber in the conversation of one of the great
(36:47):
swings of all time. Tell me he doesn't belong at
least to be brought up when we talk about the
greatest swings in baseball history.
Speaker 4 (36:54):
You'd be pretty hard pressed, especially when he hits that
thing out of the park. Now, the thing that's been
he's been on home run hitter or not, but he's
actually been very considered all things considered for him. He's
like batting two fifty two sixty this year. That's been
a little bit better than what he's been doing throughout
his tenure in Philadelphia. And I believe this is now
the third of five years, third or four years that
(37:15):
he's had forty home runs with the Phillies.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
Yeah, So he had forty six, forty seven his first
two years, had thirty eight last year, Oh what a bum,
and then forty right now. And this is crazy because
remember he was supposed to be one of the core
pieces for that Cubs team that should have become a dynasty.
Then he got hurt and he kind of toiled away
a little bit with the Cubs, and then he had
that short state with the Nationals into Red Sox, and
(37:38):
ever since he's gotten to the Phillies, he's just turned
it on to a whole nother level.
Speaker 3 (37:41):
He's Kyle.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
Do you know how many home runs he has now
a career? Yeah, it's somewhere like what three twenty five?
Speaker 5 (37:49):
Wow?
Speaker 3 (37:50):
Right near it. I heard somebody brought up the number
like a couple of weeks ago. So what was four? Really? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (37:55):
Yesterday he got to three twenty four, so he could
get I think he's definitely gonna get to four hundred,
and I don't think five hundreds out of reached at
this current pace.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
Yeah. Somebody said he does he have a Hall of
fame case? He does not. He does not have a
Hall of fame case. My hall of fame.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
I know he is, But like Schwarber, I'm not saying
we have to memorialize these guys, you know, like the
Hall of Fame does. I think Dan Patrick calls it
the Hall of very Good, which I love. He's that
for sure. Like if there was a Hall of very Good,
Kyle Schwarber's in it. He's got three hundred and twenty
four career home runs. I think we now know he's
just surpassed one thousand hits and Duckton duck Snort on
(38:34):
the text line got ropy shroppy, duck Snort said a
career two thirty two hitter should never be an MVP.
That's fine, I get, but like you also understand that
the game has changed in that much like football, where
we don't harp as much on total defense like we
used to. Batting average is seen in baseball circles as
(38:55):
a little bit of an outdated statistic.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
Well, there's a big argument this past week between Jeff
Passon and Doug mccavich.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
Oh God, dude, Jeff Passing body bagged Doug mn kavitch.
And for that specific reason, right, I'm glad you brought
that up. So this is not about trying to make
the case for Kyle Schwarber as MVP. Shoe a Otani's
gonna win that. And he's not a Hall of Famer,
but he's one of those players you always remember and like,
unless he beat your team or caused you some specific pain,
(39:25):
you'll look back and think, oh, man, Kyle Swarber, that
dude was the man.
Speaker 4 (39:28):
I'll never forget to two months when he was with
Boston as a rental those swar bombs in Fenway Park
hit different man. Hell yeah, And plus saying swarbomb is
just a cool thing to say. Yes, Like, he's never
going to be known for his defense. He's not never
going to be the most consistent hitter, but damn it,
he could hit a home run about a mile away.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
He's also one of the worst defensive outfielders ever. He's bad.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
So again, we're not no one's trying to make the
case for him to be memorialized in eternity in Cooperstown.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
But god, he's fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Like, he hits a lot of home runs, he draws
a lot of walks, he gets on base a lot,
and he's just fun. He's really some players are just fun.
Like some guys aren't Hall of famers, they're just really
good ball players that are fun to watch. Nelson just
included Darryl Strawberry among the great swings of all time.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
I like that a lot. I do.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
Somebody else, said Chipper Joe, walk him down, said Chipper Jones. Yeah,
I don't automatically think of Chipper when I think of
the great swings of all time.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
But when you think about it, yeah, he's on the list.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
I don't need a cigarette when I see his swing.
I need a cigarette when I see colegebers. Have you
ever smoked a cigarette? No, not even close.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
You have, not, even out of sheer curiosity. No. If
I did, I would have done it for Winston. That's true. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:41):
No, it's a NASCAR guy. It would have been an ad.
It would have been a run.
Speaker 4 (40:44):
I don't I don't think I'm gonna smoke, but I
definitely feel like it one time in my life, I
need to pay respects and have one sip of white lightning.
Speaker 2 (40:54):
You've never tried moonshine, No, buddy, I got I got
all kinds you can have. Sure you want to say
it down on there, Come on, Feds, come get me,
Come raid the Lacasa de Bailey if you want in
North Carolina. Baby, I mean, I got about a half
dozen Mason jars at home. You can have them if
you want. Feded's, come on and get them. They were gifts.
I didn't make it. I didn't buy. I don't have
(41:15):
a stell in the backyard. I don't have a no
washing machine down the creek.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
I I said the deer in your backyard would probably
ruin it. And to begin with anyway, dude, can I
tell you that no one cares.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
Dude.
Speaker 2 (41:25):
The deer have become so accustomed to me. They stand
in my yard and watch me cut the grass. Now
it's the craziest thing. And watch you cut your grass.
Three of them stood there and watched me cut the
grass for ten minutes the other day. Just didn't budge,
did not budge riding round the John deer, they didn't budge.
Speaker 4 (41:40):
They just stared at me the whole time. I guess
they had no idea what you were doing.
Speaker 3 (41:43):
Got them mind.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
Hour number three, Next Sports Radio ninety two seven WF
that's embarrassing.
