Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet today.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
All right, I didn't think about this, but I'm not
shocked that it's happened between who's your Bobby, Chris from Belmont,
the Bagel Guy, and a few others. As we talk
about bizarre sports injuries in light of Turk Wharton tripping
and walk through and tweaking his hamstring, those four gentlemen
and a few others pointing out, Hey, KB, didn't you
cut off your toe a couple of years ago? Doesn't

(00:44):
that count as a bizarre sports injury? Ha ha ha,
only if you count sports radio host as athletes, which
as one, I'd be a little bit hesitant to do
that myself. I've seen a lot of sports radio hosts
summer jacked. Some are the opposite. So I hear you, though,
I do you know the thing doesn't look right to
this day. You probably don't care about that, nor do
you want the description. But my kids call it my

(01:05):
dinosaur toe, so you know I won't get I won't
get much more descriptive than that. Fortunately, the fine. Doctors
at Carolina's Medical Center were able to put that thing
back on for me, and it works for the most part. Yeah,
I got like a ninety percent functioning big toe on
the left side, but uh, you know, it's it's not
pretty put it that way, but it works. So thank

(01:26):
you for reminding me of that. Seven O four five
seven ninety six ten. Hit us up on the FanDuel
text line, HJ said, just tuning in. So I don't
know if this one's come in, and don't ask me
how I remember. But Ken Griffy Junior and a testicle
injury from a sports cup that caused him to miss games.
I had forgotten about that. And I mean, listen, I
despised wearing a cup as a kid. As an athlete,

(01:49):
I couldn't. I'd went through great links, football, baseball, whatever,
any sport, anything I could do. When when the parents
or the coaches weren't looking to pop that thing out
and throw it in the bag or just get rid
of it, what did you have that reaction for?

Speaker 1 (02:03):
I hated those things.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
I was more than willing to risk the pardon the
craft of the crassness of the statement, But I was
more than willing to risk a nutshot playing baseball or
football or whatever. It was so long as I didn't
have to wear the cup, it was awful. I hated
that thing, and I think most of us probably did,
especially as kids.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
So anyway, that's that's a good one. I've forgotten about that.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Seven oh four, five, seven oh ninety six, ten, keep
pitting us up on the fan duel text line. We
have Corey Smith of pac Pride covers n C State,
part of the two four to seven Sports Network, coming
up in about eighteen nineteen minutes. We got a lot
to catch up on a lot of Duke and Carolina talk.
I've had a few NC State fans over the past
handful of days say, you know, KB, we're getting a
lot of Duke and Carolina. How about some state talk. Well,

(02:44):
we got Corey Smith coming up at four twenty five,
and the voice of the Panthers, a Niche Shroff, is
back at five o'clock. He's got a Bowl game down
in Tampa oddly enough today, and then he's flying back
to call the Panthers game against Tampa on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Gasparilla Ball.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah, buddy, So we got a Niche coming in at
five o'clock today to talk about it all. But right
now we go to smoke with the best audio in sports.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
What did you say? You what?

Speaker 4 (03:07):
What did you say?

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Wait a minute, so may way.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
What I mean by that?

Speaker 3 (03:15):
What you got?

Speaker 6 (03:15):
All?

Speaker 7 (03:15):
Right?

Speaker 8 (03:16):
Yesterday Dave Canal spoke to the media, and the media
asked him a really good question, does this team really
respond better to adversity than success?

Speaker 3 (03:26):
And here was his answer.

Speaker 9 (03:28):
I mean, certainly the record would say to adversity and
the way we've responded, and it does take a mentality
and a mindset to be able to handle success well
so that that shows up consistently. And that's what we've
been after. That's what we've been trying to capture is
how to just keep it going and just build off
of the things, build off of successes and saying, let's
find new lessons to learn, let's not relearned lessons that

(03:49):
we've already talked about and grown from. So we have
another opportunity for that this week.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
What do you think it is?

Speaker 6 (03:56):
Like?

Speaker 1 (03:56):
What is your opinion on why this.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Team, why consistency has eluded this team And he's talking
more specifically right there about you know, if this team
has responded better to adversity or success, but they have
also created their own adversity that they've had to respond to.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Do you chalk it up to youth?

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Or do you chalk it up to lack of preparation
by the head coach in certain weeks? Do you chalk
it up to lack of execution more often? Like what,
because we talked a lot about the consistent inconsistency.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Of this football team, what do you chalk it up to?

Speaker 8 (04:29):
I chalk it up to youth across the board, not
only to players, but I would also put the youth
and the coaches as well, because you look at all
three you know, coaches that are coordinator slash coaches. They're
not like old head coaches usually when sometimes you'll have
like for example, when Sean McVay was in LA when

(04:50):
he first got to LA, you know, I know he
didn't want the playoffs the first year, but they made
the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Who did he have as a coordinator? He had Phillips. Yeah,
he had an old head defensive coordinator.

Speaker 8 (05:03):
Think of you know John Fox when he finally got
his first coaching job here, you know, on the defensive
side for that one year. Yeah, it was Jack del Rio,
but then he left, but you still had a young
defensive coordinator.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
But who was the offensive coordinator? Old man Dan Hitting.

Speaker 8 (05:18):
You think about it, Yeah, you technically got your old
head coaches, but they're not they're in advisory roles. Dom's
in an advisory role, Jim Caldwells in an advisory role.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
You've got a lot of.

Speaker 8 (05:30):
Young guys that are you know, don't have that much
gray behind the ear, that are coaching and they're learning
throughout this season, just as the players are too. And
it also doesn't help. It's you're on a team that
hasn't made the playoffs in nearly eight years.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
So I think it's just a combination of both of
those things.

Speaker 8 (05:48):
Now, I will say, Kyle, if they win on Sunday,
I really think you need to bring a hypnotic person
into the locker room and just say you're coming off
an embarrassing loss. They're coming off an embarrassing loss. You
must respond, you must respond. I'm just saying I'm up

(06:08):
for anything.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Now, Okay, I'm just curious what people like. And I'll
ask the audience to what do you attribute this team's
lack of consistency? Right, Dave is talking more specifically about
responding to adversity. And you know, if this team has
responded better to adversity or success, Well, I think we
know the answer. They really haven't responded to success. They
haven't been able to handle any prosperity, but they have

(06:31):
responded to adversity. It's just all inconsistency. What do you
attribute it to? First and foremost, what else you got?

Speaker 5 (06:36):
Smoke?

Speaker 10 (06:36):
All?

Speaker 6 (06:37):
Right?

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Keeping things? Is the paythers.

Speaker 8 (06:38):
Bryce Young spoke to the media yesterday as well. He
was asked about the team as a whole and whether
or not he can tell they're locked in heading into
Sunday's batchup against the Bucks.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
We have a group of guys that are that are
do a great job with being focused and being motivated
at you know walkthroughs. I think he's always a really
good especially Wednesday walkthrough. You know, your kind of back
after a little you know, the day off and a
little bit of time away from being on the field
together and you know, again it to walk through tempo.
So I think kind of in between the huddles, seeing

(07:10):
how quickly guys get back, you know, hearing what the
conversation is, you know, is it all on topic? Is
it all all the guys that are standing behind you
know getting there. You know how how focuses everyone, and
you know, I'm super grateful and super proud of this team.
We do a really good job that of being focused.
I thought it was a good day to day, but
you know it's Wednesday, so we have to continue to

(07:31):
be consistent, have to build. I have to go back
after this and watch the film, get ready to go
from it, and then have a good Thursday tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
So I'm laughing.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
We had a text say that we need Bryce to
play and not Bruce. Which version of Bryce shows up?
Three of the last four weeks we've gotten good Bryce,
with the notable exception being Monday Night Football of course.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
But I'll smoke.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
I'll ask you a question that I heard Mac and
Bone kicking around. I think it was yesterday. Did a
segment about head to head advantages or comparing units and
players between the Panthers and the Bucks. You know who's
got the advantage. Who do you trust more? Panthers all
offensive line, Buccaneers offensive line, Panthers defense, Bucks defense, And
they got to who do you trust more in this game?

(08:17):
Bryce Young or Baker Mayfield. On Sunday and I struggle
with that. I do like there will be the Bryce,
the anti Bryce brigade, I know will jump right to
all it's Baker. Of course, it's Baker. It's Baker. It's Baker.
Baker had looks so good at times, and more than
more importantly to me, he is clearly playing injured. The
guy has hurt. That's really what it's mostly about for me.

Speaker 8 (08:40):
Yeah, I'd say Bryce because Baker's very clearly injured, and
we've seen both this year and when he had this
similar injury in twenty twenty one with the Browns. How
in the long run it hampers him. So I'd have
to say Bryce plus blood. Bryce in both games last year,
even though one of those games was a blowout, it
wasn't because of.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
He played well. Against the Bucks.

Speaker 8 (09:03):
All they had to do was hold off for thirty
seconds and they win that game here because he found
that dime to Adam Feeling with about thirty seconds left
to go in the game. And then in Tampa he
was throwing darts left and right. It's just it's either
XL couldn't catch him or the defense was not stopping
a nosebleed net game.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Yeah, Mike Jones from Lincoln to just said Mike Evans
is our Achilles heel. Just kind of a sidebar on this.
I saw some stat earlier today. I got to dig
this up. I think it was our guy on Twitter,
Dunk on Demand, Aaron Duncan that we've had on before,
was highlighting some stats to show that j C. Horn
has been among if not the best corners in man

(09:46):
coverage this year in the NFL, specifically man coverage. JC
statistically has been among if not the best in man
coverage among qualifying cornerbacks this year in the NFL. You know,
Chris Godwin got loose on Sunday, no doubt they were
in that base zone coverage that you know, JAC said
they couldn't get out of because or I'm sorry, I'm
my bad a lave and that they were in that

(10:07):
base zone coverage and you know they didn't get out
of it, couldn't get out of it. Probably should have
called a time out for being honest, but that led
to some of that. But that JC specifically has been
among the best in the league, if not the best,
in man coverage. He's got to have a big day
against Mike Evans, Like I don't know how often they're
gonna lock horns on Sunday, Probably often enough, and j
C has got to come up big in that matchup,

(10:29):
in particular, because we all expect Mike Evans to have
a day against Carolina because it's generally speaking what he does.
But you know who do you trust more between the
two quarterbacks? Bryce or Baker on Sunday. Bryce has the
home crowd at his back, he's healthy, He's played well
three of the last four games. I'm a Homer, like
I'm rooting for the home team, so I'm gonna say Bryce.

(10:50):
But again, it has mostly to do with the fact
that I think Baker's playing injured and that it's gonna
continue to affect him for the rest of the year.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
What else you got?

Speaker 10 (10:57):
All? Right?

Speaker 8 (10:58):
Now, we move to college football, as we're starting to
see a lot of people announced that their introm to
transfer portal. We've even seen some people already announce where
their next school is going to be. Yesterday, Eli Drinkowitz
basically said he's fed up with all the tampering that's
going on before the chansfer Or portal even opens and
says there needs to be a fix.

Speaker 7 (11:18):
Tampering is at I mean the highest levels.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
There is no such thing as tampering.

Speaker 7 (11:23):
It's just because there's nobody that's been punished for tampering,
and so everybody on my roster is being called. I
had a dad call me and say that, And I
called the head coaches at their schools that this school
and this school and this school called and they are
offering this much money, and you know, it's it's you're

(11:45):
putting a lot of pressure on young men.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
You know, we're paying them.

Speaker 7 (11:51):
As ten ninety nine employees a lot of money. We're
not not offering any type of retirement, we're not offering
any type of health benefits, you know. And we've we've
worked around the system and then tried to create that
as the system instead of creating a functioning way of
moving forward and making sure that it works for everybody.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
And whether that's collective bargaining, whether that's making them.

Speaker 7 (12:15):
Employees, whether that's anti trust legislation that protects everybody, you know,
the commissioner or the sec or the insave from lawsuits,
something needs to be done.

Speaker 6 (12:26):
Well.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
Yeah, and this is why I made the point that
I did. In reaction to Dabo's comments. A couple of
days ago. The comments that I made, It's why I
made them, because Dabo's right. Lane Kiffin even retweeting it
because he knows it's best for everybody. What Eli Draankowitz
is saying right there is we know where this is moving,
all right, There's going to be collective bargaining at some point.

(12:48):
There's going to have to be because of where this
is now. It benefits all these coaches to have deadlines,
to have strict open and closed periods, for there to
be punishments if those things are violated. That's what they're
all asking for. And so there are some people who
again rolled their eyes at Dabbo this week because we're
not cutting deals. We're gonna do it the right way.
He's right though, and they all want it now. In

(13:08):
the interest of time, let's go to the last one.
What's you got?

Speaker 3 (13:11):
All right?

Speaker 8 (13:11):
Nancy State one one eight, two seventy two over Texas
seven last night, including a historic performance from Paul McNeil.
But Will Wade went on the rant of a lifetime
as he called out his team for basically doing everything wrong.

Speaker 6 (13:29):
Got a lot of nice guys, got great team GPA.
We went all that stuff over three to zero. We
got all that stuff.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
It's wonderful. We're running a daycare.

Speaker 10 (13:38):
We're running a competitive Division I college basketball coach.

Speaker 6 (13:42):
I am in academics, I was a teacher. I'm happy
about three two.

Speaker 10 (13:45):
But we're running a competitive basketball program, and quite frankly,
I've been trying to get some urgency and some internal leadership,
and I think Q's done a pretty good job.

Speaker 6 (13:57):
Outside of Q and Ben, those guys are playing about
as well as we can ask them to play. We
take on the personality. We got a lot of casual
personalities on our team. We don't have people that are
repped up and ready to go.

Speaker 7 (14:09):
Man.

Speaker 6 (14:09):
I had one of the kids come to me, Oh,
I'm tough.

Speaker 10 (14:11):
I'm tough.

Speaker 6 (14:12):
I said, you're not in the top fifty of the
toughest players I've coached, not even the top fifty.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
I want to hear that you ain't tough.

Speaker 6 (14:19):
I don want to hear that like when.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
You got casual guys. I mean, it's tough.

Speaker 8 (14:27):
It's tough.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
Like today.

Speaker 6 (14:28):
In our shoot around, we made eighty eight mistakes in
our shoot around. I charged all of it. We made
eighty eight mistakes in our shoot around. We made twenty
three defensive errors thirteen offensive executionerers thirty six thirty six
on those. The other ones were different, thirty six errors
on those. Our first team made fourteen, our second team
made twenty two. How the hell can you be on
the second team and watch the first team do it

(14:50):
and make eight more mistakes. You're running the same stuff,
and that's great when you have somebody sets the ACC
record for May threes and the school record for May threes.
But we're relying on hope that one of these cats
is gonna go ballistic every night. That's what we rely on,
just hope, and hope's a bad strategy in.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
My book, is that it's taking.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
It ain't going.

Speaker 6 (15:14):
It's concerning. It's taking this long and we're not there.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
They won by thirty six last night. That was after
a thirty six point went over Texas Southern. You know,
he said, uh, yeah, it's concerning. It's taken this long
and we're not there. And we got all high major
games from here on out. Kindergarten's over. Yeah, it's concerning.
I played some of these kids tonight. Made their Christmas.
It's gonna be miserable for me. I made their Christmas.

(15:41):
They got their Christmas present week early by playing some
of these guys I've been concerned for they won by
thirty six, and I haven't really I'll be honest with you, smoke.
I have not done much digging on the internet reaction
to this. I didn't really care that much. Is there
any par clutching over this? Are there people freaking out?
I will say real quick before you answered question. If
your response is yeah, well he recruited these guys. He did,

(16:03):
you aren't correct. It all falls on him at the
end of the day. But has anybody been pearl clutching
over that that you've seen?

Speaker 3 (16:09):
I love it?

Speaker 2 (16:09):
No, okay, no, I love it like I mean, just
these guys are getting paid lots of money.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
That's where we are right.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
I remember last year on the Vice documentary when Rick
Patino was seen roasting his own guys. Who raised you?
Who taught you to be this soft? You're like children
with bad things happening. Instead of digging in and being tougher,
you wilt. And people are like, man, you're talking to
college kids. Why are you talking to these guys like say,
John's had a hell of a year last year. These
guys need to be talked to like this. Sometimes there's

(16:36):
no doubt in my mind Will Wade loves his players.
I truly Will Wade has never given me any indication. Obviously,
he's had a reputation for bending rules, breaking rules, a
little bit of an outlaw, but there's never been any
doubt in my mind that his players love him. I
expect they'll respond to that. Now to what extent we'll
find out. I don't know how top end good they are,
but I bet they're better from that and we'll talk

(16:57):
about it next. Corey Smith and Pac Pride part of
the two four seven Sports Network. I wanted to zero
win on NC State for at least a couple of
minutes here because of that, the start to the season,
Dave Dorin returning the CJ. Bailey market in nil and
Charlotte Product running back Hollywood's Smothers entering the Transfer portal.
We'll talk about it all with Corey Smith next. Stick

(17:18):
Around Sports Radio ninety two seven WFZ. I'm glad this

(17:45):
having a good time here on a Thursday, KB and
smoke with you here on Charlotte Sports Leader WFNZ, the
best damn sports talking the Carolinas. A bunch more to
get to a Niche Shroff, the voice of the Panthers,
coming up at five o'clock. He's got a bowl game
in Tampa, and then he comes back to call Carolina
versus Tampa on Sunday at the Bank. Don't forget ten
a m Sunday morning countdown to kickoff right here on WFNZ,

(18:09):
three hours of premium Panthers pregame coverage. Myself and Chris McClain.
We're gonna have a good time and we're gonna set
you up for Panthers and Bucks at the Bank and
then hope to see a ton of you out there.
That's the goal, right, I mean, a true home field
advantage would be nice in a situation like this, needing
to split where needing to beat the Bucks as they
pursue their first playoff berth since twenty seventeen. We'll come

(18:32):
back to that because right now, we got to keep
talking Pack. We haven't focused as much on NC State
as of late, and I wanted to do that and
bring in a guy who knows the Pack well. He
is the editor of pac Pride, part of the two
four to seven Sports Network. Our buddy Corey Smith is
back with us for a Thursday conversation, Corey, what's going on, man?

Speaker 1 (18:48):
How you been now much?

Speaker 5 (18:50):
Actually just driving out of Tampa right now.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
Driving to Tampa. Really, what's going on?

Speaker 5 (18:54):
Yeah? Oh, you know Thrilla boredem?

Speaker 1 (18:58):
Jenny, Yeah, no, I know.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
We were just talking about the Gasparilla Bowl a little
while ago. We'll get to that in just a second,
but I will start with the Will Wade rant last night.
And I think we've all probably joked. You would have
never known they won the game by thirty six points
if all you saw was his post game rant about
his players.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
But boy, he just got fiery last night. What'd you
think about that?

Speaker 5 (19:19):
Yeah? I mean, look, this is a you know, kind
of what Will has done a couple of times so
far this season. You know, he did it after the
VCU game. He did it leading up to the VCU game.
Actually not to this degree. And you know, you might
have heard some of the pregame talk when he was discussing,
you know, leading up to the unc Ashville game, the
fact that he had to practice that morning to get

(19:40):
guys back on track. I think he had like four
and a half hours worth of practices between you know,
the eighteen hours leading up to that game against you
in the ashvill So there's been a lot of kind
of pressing his thumb on the scale here to try
to kind of tip things in the favor of what
they're trying to do defensively, and it really just doesn't
seem like it's all clicking yet. You've seen more energy,

(20:01):
you've seen more of physicality at times. But you know,
when you you go into a game against you know,
a team like Texas Texas Southern and you give up
over seventy points, I think it was still a little
bit of frustration for him coming out of that game.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
So, I mean, how do you feel like they've played
so far? Obviously it's been up and down, but overall,
what do you think of what Will Wade has produced
in his short tenure thus far as the head coach.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
I mean, I think it's it's pretty short of what
he was hoping for. I know, you know, his his
hope going into it was to go win the now
Invitational and and win one of you know, the two
games against uh, you know, against Kansas and yeah, against
Kansas and obviously you know the road game against the
ball burn two. But you came away, oh for four
and in the four high major games that you played

(20:48):
so far, you still get a chance to win one
against Ole miss Is coming up Sunday, but that's you know,
he kind of lost the luster on that one a
little bit too. But there's there's been some ups and downs.
You know, guys like Darian Williams started off the season
really well and his players dipped against better competition. Obviously,
Paul McNeil has been up and down. But forty seven
points for him last night, you know what he's capable of.

(21:09):
It's just it's really I think the point of frustration
for will Wade and I think Forrensey State fans is,
you know, number one, finding consistency on the offensive side
of the basketball and being able to produce from the
guys that you know are supposed to produce. And then
number two, you know, just on the defense side of
the basketball, closing out. Perimeter defense has to get significantly better.
You've seen you know, random dude just heat up over

(21:32):
these three, especially the last three games they've lost. Seaton
Hall was just you know, they were going to feed
the ball inside and the dominate inside. But you know,
the games the last three, the perimeter defense has really
been suspect all.

Speaker 1 (21:46):
Of this is in the same vein. But I'll ask it.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
When this roster was being assembled prior to the season,
back in the offseason, did you think it was a
roster As it became complete, did you feel them like
it was a roster that could compete with Duke and Carolina?

Speaker 1 (22:01):
And has that changed to this point right now?

Speaker 5 (22:05):
I don't think it's necessarily changed, and I do think
it was. It definitely was the roster and I still
feel it is one that can compete there. The issue
that you're running into right now is again, you know,
you expected a little bit more out of Darien Williams
being the bus driver for this team, and you haven't
seen that to this point. Can that change? Yes? I
mean you saw it late in the game obviously against Kansas,

(22:29):
you know, him picking up eleven of his seventeen points
in overtime in the final what thirty seconds of the
game as well in regulation. You've seen it from Paul McNeil,
and you've seen it from you know, at times, Terrence Arsono.
He was another one that's expected to have a bigger role.
You just haven't seen those guys. Again, I keep going
back to the consistency aspect here. You haven't seen those

(22:51):
guys consistently produced, and that I think is the kind
of worrysome aspects here is once you get into those games,
those you've got to know what you're getting from those guys.
You've got to know that you're gonna be able to
press all the right button and you just don't know
which one the press going in each and every single
of these games.

Speaker 1 (23:07):
Will wait right.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
Now, Corey Smith, Pac Pride editor, he's with us here
on a Thursday afternoon. Let's pivot to football just in
the interest of time here, big picture stuff. Not the
greatest season in NC state history, but they finish strong,
they get to the bowl game, as we talked about
the Gasparilla Bowl tomorrow by the way, at two thirty.

Speaker 1 (23:25):
For those that are wondering.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
What I mean, I guess, what were your general expectations
going into this season and by the end of it, like,
what did you think of all the noise surrounding Dave
Dorn's rumored potential retirement and then very abruptly him saying Nope,
I am coming back for twenty twenty six.

Speaker 5 (23:42):
Yeah, it's funny because I actually said before the season,
I said over and over again. I might have said
it on your show too. We were talking about, you know,
what's what gets Dave Joran off the perceived hot seat,
and you know, I said, I mean seven and five
is the bar. You've got to win some games that
you you didn't think you were going to win, and
you got to beat UNC at the end of the season,
ECU at the beginning of the season. That's exactly what

(24:03):
they did. I mean, you know, outside of losing to
Virginia Tech at Hole. Uh, there wasn't really a game
on the schedules for like they they should have won
that game. I mean you look back and and a
lot of these a lot of the games they ended
up playing on the road ended up being, you know,
against teams that were either competing to get into the
cons blow playoffs or they are or one of them

(24:24):
is in you know, Notre Dame maybe should have been
in duke Quin the AC Championship. That's another road loss
for you. But you know, as far as as far
as what I made of the rumors sows I mean,
or the you know, retirement rovers, yeah, I mean there
was still some of that, but again I think it
was all just kind of like this muddy middle where
you know, he finishes seven and five, so win three

(24:44):
out of the last four games. You can't really let
go of a guy at that point based off of
what he's been able to build and then you know,
kind of turn the trajectory around. But also it's sure,
Dave Dorian, that's not exactly the type of season to
be like, all right, man, I'm gonna ride off into
a sunset. This is you know, we seven to five,
We beat Georgia tech, man, this was this is a
great season. He'd probably needed at least you know, nine

(25:05):
to ten wins to be able to be like, all right,
that was it for me. I'm good to go, And
I think now it's just kind of left both sides like,
all right, we got to do this again. Let's see
what we can get next year. On top of last
thing here too is you know, just the coaching market
as well, and obviously all the tower, all the teams
and Power four is let go of head coaches. That
obviously changes tide a little bit too, because you were
just you're gonna be competing at different waters when it

(25:28):
comes to what you were trying to get ahead coaches safseason.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
You're right, so you kind of fed into it right there.
But I mean, generally speaking, do you view it as
a good thing, a positive thing, that Dave Doran's coming
back next year?

Speaker 5 (25:40):
I mean, we'll see, because again it's about what you
can do in the transfer portal. It's about who you
can keep, and you lose Hollywood's Mothers today. But I
don't think anybody, even going back to the spring, thought
Hollywood Brothers gonna be back. The thought process was he
was potentially gonna go to the NFL Draft after the season,
or you know, if he had a good enough season,
potentially look for more money elsewhere. So that's not really

(26:00):
a massive loss. The other question marks really are are
going to be, especially on the offensive side of the football. CJ.
Bailey to Curious Peak is another one. But I think
he's probably looking at the NFL Draft or maybe going
to the transfer portal. We'll see, But he's the guy
that's got NFL Draft potential written all over him. And
then you know a couple others. I mean, Terrell Anderson
was your leading receivers of this past offseason. What does

(26:22):
he ultimately do That's going to be one to watch.
And then some other playmakers around the offensive side of
the football. You're losing a lot of players who've got
to retain some or go out on the transfer portal.
So it can be a positive and you can continue
to build towards that. But it's number one, you know,
how much are people bought in and how much money
they're going to have to spend and go out and
get the right players. Number two, are they going to

(26:43):
be attracted to NP State and ultimately come to play
for them?

Speaker 2 (26:46):
Since you mentioned it, I mean I've followed the reporting
as it relates to CJ. Bailey, but you know, any
thoughts on the market for him, who you think would
be coming after him, and what his mindset is right now?

Speaker 5 (26:57):
Yeah, I mean it's interesting because it's it's very similar
to what we're talking about when it came to, you know,
the job market for NC State. If you're out there
looking and you're you're looking for who you're gonna get
as your head coach, and you're seeing all these high
major places you know drop their head coach and needs
they're suddenly needed to look for the top option. Well,
that's kind of what's happened to CJ. Bailey, you know,

(27:19):
last week or so, You've seen some really good quarterbacks
enter the transfer portal and they're all going to be
finding they're probably gonna be looking at at you know,
landing at higher marketplaces as well. So how much does
that kind of saturate the market for him and does
that make NC State that much more desirable of an option.
Everything I've heard behind the scenes is that it sounds

(27:39):
like things are still tracking well for NC State and they,
you know, on their side of things, the people that
are dealing with the contracts, still feel like they're in
a good position to be able to retain him. It's
just again, it's a matter of how does he play
in the gas Perilla Bowl. You know, how much do
other teams out there covet him and how much are
they trying to pull him in, because we do know,
you know, so the week's leading up to the transfer

(28:02):
port actually opening on January second, he's going to be
back at home. He's going to be in Florida and
spending this time there and not on NC State campus
because the Gasparilla Bowl is played so early in the
bowl season.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
All right, last thing, and speaking of we're going to
talk to Anie Schrof coming up in just a bit
on the call for the Gasparilla Bowl tomorrow, also the
voice of the Panthers. But you know, it's a bowl
season has become a very weird thing. We're having very
you know, different conversations about it again these days, maybe
even moving it to the beginning of the season. I
believe you can correct me if I'm wrong. I do
not believe Ryan Silverfield is coaching Memphis in this bowl

(28:34):
game tomorrow. But you know, what do you hope what
do you hope n C State can get out of
this game tomorrow in Tampa? What's most important to see
a win?

Speaker 5 (28:43):
That's the most important thing. You know, this is a
for Dave Dorian. He hasn't won a bowl game since
twenty seventeen. It's something that's kind of, you know, been
kind of stuck in a croll for a while now,
and something that NC State fans, if you're not a
Dave Doran fan, they often point that out. He would
like to have that kind of office record. You know,
we won a ball game. Finally, he got to eight wins.

(29:06):
You'd love to see for you know, the younger guys
that are that are gonna have to step up into
some roles next season, particularly Duke Scott at the running
back position. Don't know what they're gonna do ultimately, who's
gonna opt out of this game? They still haven't said
one way or another technically, but you know, if a
guy likes to Curious Peak opts not to play in
this game, who did they put at the left tackle position?

(29:27):
So there's gonna be a little bit of watching that
and watching the younger guys and seeing how they step up.
But the most important thing for NC State is coming
away with a win, because again, it's just been something
that has just eluded them for so long now at
this point and being able to get to eight wins
in this type of season would be huge for them.

Speaker 3 (29:44):
Love it.

Speaker 2 (29:44):
Corey Safe travels down to Tampa. Merry Christmas to you
and yours brother. Will do it again soon.

Speaker 5 (29:49):
Yeah, sorry Mary Christmas? Do you guys? I appreciate you always.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
Tory Smith, Editor pac Pride two four to seven Sports Network,
en route to Tampa for the Gasparilla Bowl tomorrow, where
a Niche Shroff will be on the call, before heading
back from Tampa to call Tampa at Carolina Sunday at
Bank of America Stadium seven oh four five seven of
ninety six to ten hit us up on the FanDuel
text line wolf Pack James saying, if it's assumed we're
going to lose Mothers and Bailey, then what is the

(30:13):
point in bringing Dorian back. We're having to restart at
that point. Anyways, I would say I'll just offer you
what I think is the simple answer here. Feel free
to tell me what you think. You don't want to
be involved in this coaching cycle. You've got stability, You've
got a guy who is going to get you seven
or eight wins next year, probably at least, and this

(30:36):
is an historically stupid coaching carousel that you probably don't
want any part of if you're in c State, given
everything else going on.

Speaker 1 (30:44):
That's my best answer to your question.

Speaker 8 (30:45):
And there's probably going to be more shuffling because Michigan's open. Yeah,
so that means we're not even done. You know, we
thought we were done a week ago, but then surellmore happened,
So you got that whole thing to worry about. And
then let's say, let's say, for example, Jed Fish takes
the job. All right, Well, Jed Fish takes the Michigan job.
That means Washington comes open. Washington, while not being a

(31:08):
top tier job, is considered a very good job. Then
Washington comes open, someone's gonna take the Washington job. So
whoever takes the Washington job that was probably a pretty
solid job. That job comes open soon and so forth,
and then you basically are just waiting for the timer
to run out again. So I get it because I
think a lot of State fans they know what they

(31:28):
have in Dave Dorn, and they know it's not gonna
get in terms of being a true national title contender.
I don't think they'll ever be at or even an
ACC Championship participant. They haven't been that. So I get
the frustrations. But I also think that being patient with
Dave Dorn in this situation will help you for whoever
the next coach is gonna be. Because whenever that day

(31:51):
comes where Dave Dor's no longer to head coach, let's
say it happens next year, the coaches will say, hey,
you know it's not the job, but that gum and
it's been a really good job for a long time.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Yeah, And WF and Z comments are on the text line.
Had asked me, well, if CJ. Bailey leaves who's up next?
Are they on the roster or would they look to
the transfer portal. It's hard to tell. It's impossible to know.
And we're gonna talk about this when we come back,
because I've been meaning to get to this story for
two days. But man, the quarterback carousel as well in
the transfer portal is absolutely wild.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
But right now we go to smoke on the headlights.

Speaker 8 (32:26):
All right, And speaking of that one name who is
not entering the transfer portal, this is a big one
for the ACC. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings announced he's going
to return to the Mustangs for his last year in
twenty twenty six. Kle does that instantly put the Mustangs
as one of the favorites to make the ACC title
game next.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
I think it has to, right, you know, I don't.
It doesn't guarantee anything, but yeah, I mean, you got
a veteran quarterback coming back, dual threat, great athlete knows
the conference now, been there, played for an ACC championship.

Speaker 1 (32:57):
Yeah, of course it does. It does, all right.

Speaker 8 (32:59):
And in utter news in the state of Texas, Steve
Sarcasian's fired as Stephen's coordinator and has made a new
hire who says you can't go home the new DC
for de Longhorns, Will must chang, Will must chap.

Speaker 2 (33:13):
Is he the coaching waiting again? Or maybe a little
too soon, too soon for the Okay, too soon for that?
All right, listen, we'll come back, We'll tell you who
balled out. We'll hit on the quarterback transfer portal and
a Nie Shroff coming up in seventeen minutes.

Speaker 1 (33:25):
Stick around Sports Radio ninety two to seven w fn Z.

Speaker 8 (33:36):
City, Get on your feet, Hello, good protection for the
year zone.

Speaker 1 (33:48):
Can you go to the buck he's got coming on?

Speaker 3 (33:50):
Sign by sign.

Speaker 8 (33:53):
Back to bush, running into the area, it'll pass toward.

Speaker 1 (33:58):
Uprights for Pete. It's time for who balled Out?

Speaker 2 (34:11):
Powered by High Performance real Estate Advisors and the biggest
dad gumballer of them all, Thomas L.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Rod.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
Go to high Performance real Estate dot Com and they'll
see you at the closing table.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
Smoke would you bring for the people?

Speaker 3 (34:21):
Look?

Speaker 8 (34:21):
I know you know we'll wade through his whole entire
team under the bus. But Paul McNeil Junior did ball
out last night. Absolutely incredible performance. Forty seven points in
rebounds was eleven from seventeen from behind the arc, made
one more field goal inside the arc. An absolute incredible
performance as State one one towight to seventy two. But
we all don't realize it because we'll Wade called his

(34:43):
whole entire team out.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
Yeah, I'll stay in the ACC and go with Wake Forest.
I guess I'll go. Juke Harris in particular, nineteen points.

Speaker 3 (34:52):
Come, that's been good.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
Yeah, a couple of key free throws down the stretch.
Miles Colvin also had a nice night, hit a clutch
triple that swung momentum late, but Juke Carris leading Wake
Forest with nineteen points as they hold off the Longwood
Lancers seventy one to sixty eight.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
I don't know why this game was so close.

Speaker 2 (35:12):
I know college basketball can be a funny thing and
a fickle beast.

Speaker 3 (35:15):
And bestly with finals on the way, I.

Speaker 1 (35:17):
Get it, it's that time of year.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
But like you're you're nearly knock off Michigan, you lose
to Michigan and Texas Tech by a combined two points,
and then you're in a you know, just a fistfight
with Longwood and you win by three. I mean that
game had nine ties and I think nearly as many
lead changes. I just don't Wake Forest fans, Deacon Donna,

(35:40):
Deacon Jerry. I think we have a notable Wake fan
named Walker out there, like, I mean.

Speaker 3 (35:44):
You're out there, Wes Bryan.

Speaker 2 (35:46):
How do you feel about I mean West of course, Like,
how do you feel about this basketball team right now?
Are you expecting more of the same over the past
couple of years? I mean, clearly this is you know,
this is shaping up to be another bubble year for
way Force basketball.

Speaker 1 (36:01):
But yay, I don't know what to make of them.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
I mean, they won so Juke Carris balled out seven
four five seven O ninety six ten. Hit me up
with your thoughts as it relates to what we were
talking about. In the previous segment NC State Corey Smith's
stop by, we talked about the CJ. Bailey market. We
had a listener ask, well, if he goes, who's the
next quarterback? And I couldn't begin to tell you. There's
a kid on the roster who I guess could be that.

(36:26):
But I mean the quarterback movement once again in the
transfer portal is going to be something to behold. We're
not We're still a couple of weeks out from the
you know, everything opening up. But you got former five
stars Dylan Ryola and DJ Lagway leaving Nebraska and Florida.
You got what Aiden Schiles leaving Michigan State, Kiten Howser

(36:48):
leaving ECU probably certainly headed back to the P four,
probably maybe the Big Ten.

Speaker 1 (36:53):
We'll have to wait and see.

Speaker 2 (36:54):
Brendan Soorsby, who has got two years left of eligibility,
leaving Cincinnati. He began his career at Indiana, left because
Kurtz Signetti took the job. I don't think he's going
back there, but boy, what a story that would be.
Who else is out there? Sam Levitt Arizona State, Byron
Brown South Florida, who could be following Alex Golish to Auburn.

Speaker 1 (37:15):
We'll have to wait and see what happens there. I
just saw bo Pribula today.

Speaker 2 (37:18):
Bau Bribula, Missouri, Right, So the truth is, I don't know.
And like, for instance, I love what James Franklin's doing
for my guys. I love what James Franklin's doing in Blacksburg.
That guy put together a hell of a class. I mean,
he's stacking six six, three hundred pounds. Offensive lineman, like
you wouldn't believe four star running backs quarterbacks running But
I don't have any idea who the quarterback is going

(37:38):
to be. I have no clue who James Franklin's going
to bring in to play quarterback.

Speaker 1 (37:42):
I mean, there are going to.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
Be a lot of guys, a lot of names, a
lot of bodies out there, but a lot of quarterback
movement in the portal once again this offseason, and you've
got a lot of teams in need. You know, Miami's
going to need a quarterback, Texas Tech is going to
need a quarterback, Indiana's going to need a quarterback. Lane
Kiffin at LSU is of course going to need a quarterback.
Florida State probably gonna need a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (38:04):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
I think Tommy Castianis was trying to apply for another
year of eligibility, But.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
Why would you torture us with that?

Speaker 1 (38:10):
I don't want to watch that. I doubt they do either.
Who else? Who else?

Speaker 3 (38:13):
Who is that Alabama game? Though?

Speaker 2 (38:15):
Louisville's gonna need a quarterback? Who did who's Jeff prom
looking at? We talked about this yesterday.

Speaker 3 (38:19):
Apparently to nakos uh it is he is linked Dylan
l Watch.

Speaker 8 (38:26):
Dylan Riyola was a name to watch, which I think
would be a perfect fit for both sides.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
Oh Bert up in Illinois. He's going to need a quarterback.
Uh David Randa Baylor, who I guess is coming back.

Speaker 8 (38:38):
Uh, well, yeah, because they have no choice because they
don't have an ad right now.

Speaker 3 (38:41):
Right.

Speaker 8 (38:42):
And by the way, speaking of that, there have been
there's been some smoke about uh dz Lagway going to Baylor.

Speaker 1 (38:49):
Oh I'd seen that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'd seen that.
Are you?

Speaker 10 (38:54):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (38:54):
Because John Somemross trying to get the Filo kid from
from Georgia Tech to transfer. Right, here's that tampering thing
we talked to, because they got the offensive coordinator from
Georgia Georgia Tech right, and Filos backed up Haines King
for the past couple of years and performed admirably when
he stepped in. And so John Sumrall, who as smoke
just said, poach the Georgia Tech o c to go
to Florida with him. They're trying to get the Filo
kid to transfer. I mean, we're just talking openly about

(39:16):
the offers he's got on the table. Even though none
of this has opened up yet, and so so many
teams are good. The tar Heels probably gonna need a quarterback.
I can't imagine that Belichick's gonna run it back with
g O. Right, you wouldn't think anyway, man, he's gonna
need a quarterback potentially at.

Speaker 3 (39:32):
Duke if well.

Speaker 8 (39:34):
Now that the question is is mins are going to
try to test the draft waters because of how fin
to draft it is that quarterback correct, So that's the
concern you run into now, h and Heck, I wouldn't
be surprised if wake Varest maybe sneaks around it.

Speaker 3 (39:47):
If they're not hi on Perdy being the guy next year.

Speaker 2 (39:50):
The kid at Clemson who backed up kid Klubnick who
got to start the Vezina, Yes right, I mean I
don't think they're sold on him as their starter. Clemson,
when Dabo's willing to jump into the portal once it
officially opens, probably very well could be hunting a quarterback too.
So you have so many teams that are going to
be hitting the portal looking for a quarterback this offseason.

Speaker 8 (40:11):
And off Sader's a couple of names in SCS level
that are going to be very intriguing too.

Speaker 1 (40:15):
Tiger Tiger thanks for reminding me.

Speaker 3 (40:18):
Uh Tiger, Yeah, I'm with you, buddy.

Speaker 8 (40:22):
Him and Mercer quarterback Brydon Atkinson. Braydon entered a transfer portal.
He was second team, also gone. He put up numbers
almost identical to Tiger, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (40:33):
And the Harvard quarterback Jaden Craig is also apparently getting
a ton of love and looking at, you know, being
looked at by a lot of programs. So it's hard
to say where these guys end up. Money's going to
get thrown around, It's going to be interesting to watch,
and of course, as it happens, we'll talk all about it.
But when we return, a Nief Voice of the Panthers,
he's got the call of NC State and Memphis and
the Gasparilla Bowl tomorrow, and then he's got Panthers and Bucks.
