Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet Today.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Well, the Panthers went down to Jacksonville yesterday and looked
flat out awful. They lost to a rookie head coach
and his debut in the NFL. Defensively, same old story
over two hundred yards rushing again, although I will point
out that over a third of that did come on
a single run, but Panthers fans don't care about that.
Seven straight games that the Panthers have given up two
(00:50):
hundred plus yards rushing. That's, of course, after investing heavily
in free agency at the defensive line spot, including Turk Wharton,
who's apparently going to be out too to four weeks
with a hamstring injury that he suffered in yesterday's opener.
If you're looking for silver linings, a year ago the
Panthers lost Derek Brown for the entire season, and so
now I guess the first week injury is just two
(01:10):
to four weeks on the defensive line. But that's only
if you're searching for silver linings from yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Smoke what you got. And I will say silver linings too.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
For as bad as he played in the preseason, when
Turk Wharton was out there, he was a good run
stuffing de tackle last d end. Yesterday, oh yeah, no,
he was playing well when he was out there, so
and that was a big concern because we're all looking
heading into regular seasons like he's not looking like a
good signing. And then he shows up yesterday. Unfortunately, he
he just had a myriad of issues. He did, he
had it, he was evaluated for concussion, and then hammy happens.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
He did.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
And I'll say this too, and again this is not
something that Panthers fans probably want to hear today, although
some of you do because there is one texta in
particular who I've got to go find the missive that
he sent in a couple of minutes ago. And I
don't mean that negatively, but he was chastising Panthers fans
for overreacting, called them little children, said that it's just
one week and yesterday was bad, but he thinks that
(02:01):
it's a massive overreaction in week one, and ordinarily I
would agree, but this is a little bit different. This year,
same coach, same quarterback, offensive line back, all that stuff, right,
and you come out looking like that against a coaching
staff making its debut in the NFL. To me, that's unacceptable,
and if I'm David Tepper, that's unacceptable right, without question.
But again you might I want to hear this. Panthers
(02:22):
defense played better in the second half, especially against the run.
In the first half. They gave up I believe, one
hundred and thirty four yards rushing in the first half.
They tightened up in the second half and only gave
up sixty six yards rushing in the second half. So
that does matter. I want to make sure we throw
that in there. There were a couple of guys like
j C. Horn in particular, who had very good days.
(02:43):
Turk Wharton as well before he got hurt. What were
the numbers you just told me on j C Horn
Speaker 4 (02:49):
So this was from the thirty third team they just
released as like five minutes ago, and it's absolutely insane.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
From j C.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
Horn's stat line. Jac Horn, so here's when he was
the nearest defender in coverage in Week one. Three targets,
one catch, seven yards allowed, one handed I and t
two point eight passing passer rating very good.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Had a very very good day individual great, Yeah, individually, Jason.
I mean, it's hard to call anything great when you lose,
but you're not wrong about three two point seven, two
point eight passer rating. It's very yeah, one hundred percent.
You just need you know, ten other guys playing like
that to his level.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
I'd say Mike Jackson also had a pretty solid game too.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Somebody else told me KB, what are they smoking if
Bryce was the third highest graded player on the offense yesterday.
I don't care about the text that I'll get for
saying this, because I think you should know where I'm
coming from. Bryce was not as bad yesterday as some
people think he was. He ruined his entire day by
coughing the football up. Okay, that's not an excuse. What
(03:50):
I'm telling you is they out he made some great
froze yesterday, and if you go back and rewatch the game,
you'll see them. But you will ruin an entire performance
by not taking care of the football, and that version
of Bryce has to go away permanently or he will
not be here a year from now. That's my perspective.
He still shoulders much of the blame because the carelessness
(04:10):
with the football cannot continue. But he certainly threw the
ball a hell of a lot better yesterday than he
did a year ago, you know, versus the Saints and
the opener. But there were guys not making plays. He was,
of course careless with the football, and when you cannot
get stops and you can't get off the field defensively,
it ratchets up the pressure on your offense. We saw
it all season long last year, and Bryce was pushing,
(04:34):
he was pressing, he was panicking. At times, he was
trying to make a play to get him back in
it in one swing, and it just doesn't work like that.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
So I mean, I don't do the grading.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
I don't know, but I walked away from that game
feeling like Bryce would not be getting a tenth of
the criticism that he's getting today if he had taken
care of the football and hadn't been careless on a
couple of plays, because otherwise they were plays there to
be made. So that's where you know, I understand people
look at that, Oh one of these greaters talking about
he also turned the football over, and that's the surefire
(05:03):
way to guarantee he does not return for a second contract.
Let's go to the phone line here, Panther T Dog
is up first here on the four o'clock hour.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
What's up, T Dog?
Speaker 6 (05:12):
Well, nothing much, KB. You know, I usually try to
be divorce of reason, but that's just gonna have to
wait till another show. A little bit it because I'm
hout of the fish crease right now. Little but I
don't I don't get it.
Speaker 7 (05:23):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (05:23):
I understand what Charlotte and then State of North Carolina
has done to the football guy or the sports guards
at that that we always had to have these conversations where, oh,
well maybe next time, maybe that time. You're right, there
was some positive but like I said, they've got to
wait to another show because it's ridiculous.
Speaker 7 (05:40):
You know, it's bad.
Speaker 6 (05:41):
But I'm so disappointed and depressed that I called Mac
and Bone this morning, like you.
Speaker 8 (05:46):
Know, I ain't talking to Mac and Bone said.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
That was on the afternoon show, and I was arguing
about Deshaun Foster should be all starting running back. That's
how long it's been as I talked to Mac and Baum.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
So you know it's bad.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
I also thought about changing my hashtag name that I
call you guys with pants t dog, but I didn't
want k We just think I had died since I
was taking in as somebody else.
Speaker 7 (06:08):
So I didn't do that.
Speaker 6 (06:09):
But I'm just saying, I just like I don't understand,
like I really want these people to be here. I
like Dan Morgan, I like Analyst, but come on, man.
Speaker 7 (06:18):
Some got to give it.
Speaker 6 (06:19):
I just don't understand. And then you had to rage
play Madden with the Panthers and beat somebody. I beat somebody, kid,
you say, like fifty to zero. Now he's crying because
I had to play. It made myself feel better about
my football team.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
It's ridiculous looking down here is humiliating some eight year
old and Tucson yesterday because I'm killing him online.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
I'm kidding him and.
Speaker 8 (06:39):
He's like eight years old. I was, Oh my bad,
I got a mad one out for me right now.
Speaker 7 (06:43):
You know what I'm saying, ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Thank you, buddy. I appreciate kids to learn eventually. Damn kids.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Man, Panthers got whooped tea dog was looking for some
nine year old out and to take it out crying
and the strong this one.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
UH fan guy Dave is up next on the phone lines.
What's up? Dave, how are you, Kyle?
Speaker 9 (07:05):
What's going on? Man? Hey, thanks for taking my call.
I was a hard one to follow. You had a
texture that said we're what cry babies about Week one?
Speaker 5 (07:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (07:15):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Somebody texted that in yeah yeah.
Speaker 9 (07:17):
Well guess what this isn't just another Week one overreaction.
It's is seven years of the same crap that we
put up with here in Charlotte. We had all summer,
all pre season or prepare for the Jacks and a
rookie head coach. We were missing tackles, blocking assignments, Xavier
League at Bryce Young throwing the ball out of bounds
on a fourth and one, must have play call, Kyle.
(07:38):
Since twenty nineteen, the Panthers have started the season oh
and two five out of six times.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (07:43):
The outlier is the twenty twenty one season when they
started three and oh and they finished five and twelve
that year. You know, nineteen ninety oh and two teams
make the playoffs eleven and a half percent of the time.
And smoke, you said that we're gonna win in Arizona
on Sunday. If we don't win an Arizona on Sunday,
the season's done for and just like every other season prior.
(08:05):
Usually October one signifies that the season is over. I'm
a lifelong fan, I'm a PSL owner, and man, I'm
telling you right now, if we see performances like we
did yesterday, I think Bryce Young and Dave Canals are
borrow time here in Charlotte. So I just want to
get that piece out there. And props to the WFNZ
crew from six am to six pm. You have to
(08:26):
come on the radio and talk about this lousy team
year in and year out, weekend and week out. I
really love the show, guys. Thanks for taking my call
here today.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Thank you today. Appreciate you, buddy.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
I love my job. I love talking to y'all. Like
I'm not trying to blow smoke like it's phrasing. I
realized that, but like I'm not. This is a fun job, right.
You are good people, great fans. I love talking to you.
But it is old. It's getting old coming in here
on Monday and having to talk about a team that
can't get attacked together. Like you didn't just lose to
Sean Payton in week one. You didn't lose to Andy Reid,
you didn't lose to the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles. You know,
(09:00):
you didn't even lose to Pete Carroll's old ass the
way that the Patriots did yesterday.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
You lost to a first.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Time head coach and a team coming off nearly as
bad a defensive year as you did, and then they
looked more ready to play. And that's that's really frustrating
for fans, as it should be. Let's see Keith is
up next on the phones. What's going on, Keith?
Speaker 7 (09:20):
Hey, how's it going? Yeah?
Speaker 8 (09:22):
I have a couple of things and just uh, just
a question at the end. I'm looking at the schedule
and I know, like as a fan, you know, you're
saying you're not We're not scared or anything at Arizona,
But I don't. I wouldn't want to throw them under
the butt. They got Will Johnson their defense, and I think,
you know, Kyler Raray, I know what.
Speaker 5 (09:39):
Happened in the past. Like they're there.
Speaker 8 (09:42):
I think they're gonna be actually solid and it's gonna
be a very tough matchup for the Panthers. Then we
got Jon Robinson. Then we got to play the Cowboys,
who looked pretty solid. Actually, the Jeffs look good. The
Buffalo Bills, the Green Bay Packers. So all I'm saying
besides the Saints, I think, like, and I'm not really
a pest in this day off, but like, we really
probably got a really lower our expectations. And honestly, you know,
(10:05):
I think Bryce is not it and we sometimes you
got to just really cut our losses. I understand that
this is the first game, but like, as a Panther's
we gotta truly cut our losses. And you know, if
this is a bad season, like, are you opposed to
like us? Depending on where we're at in draft position?
I know it's a lost season. We just got started,
(10:26):
But just just bear with me. Are you opposed to
drafting a quarterback? You know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Like, you know, if he sucks, dude, if he sucks
and he can't take care of the football this year,
then sure get rid of him.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
I don't care. Doesn't bother me.
Speaker 8 (10:42):
I mean, at some point as an organization, you got
to make strategic.
Speaker 10 (10:46):
Moves, build the lines of scrimmage both ways, and you
got to get somebody that can be truly a franchise quarterback,
and you got to cut your losses. You can't keep
on project after project after project after project.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Yeah, right, you are, and I appreciate the phone call
you you can't and so again when I tell you
that I rewatched the game before the show today and
I saw Bryce do a lot of nice things, but
he ruined it all by the turnovers. I had a
few people saying, yeah, but you know, you're saying there's
going to be some good plays, but no, what I'm
telling you is, bottom line, I saw good things that
can be built upon, but if he just continues to
(11:18):
turn the football over, then he's got to go. They
got to get in the hell out of here. Lots
of guys have flashed potential and made great throws at
times and had a nice stretch of games. The goal
for Bryce Young going into this year was to show
it for seventeen for a seventeen game year. To play
consistent football at that position for seventeen games doesn't mean
go seventeen to zero, doesn't mean never turn the football
(11:40):
over all right, but it means take care of the
football more often than not, don't panic, learn to slide. Okay,
stop freaking out and chucking the mean like he was
doing Daniel Jones stuff yesterday. Now look at Daniel Jones
in Indianapolis. No, I know, that's what I'm saying. So
my point is like it's never permanent, and guys who
have talent are always going to get chances. But if
(12:00):
you can't take care of the football, you will not
last in your current spot, much like Daniel Jones did
not last in New York. And so you know, yes,
if he stinks, get rid of him. If this year
he stinks it up, get rid of him and move on.
And quite frankly, if he stinks this year and you're
probably moving on from both him and the coach, are
you letting Dave Canalis draft a quarterback like this isn't
(12:21):
a seasoned, established winner at head coach we're talking about here.
I know we're getting ahead of ourselves and there we're
one game in, so we don't have to have this
full blown conversation. All I'm telling you is, yes, I
am more than open to moving on if things are bad.
But I saw Bryce do a lot of nice things yesterday,
but there were drops. First of all, Hunter Renfro has
to catch that ball across the middle, just has to.
(12:41):
That's his job. I don't care that he got hit,
that's his job. He thinks he should have to catch
that ball. He does.
Speaker 7 (12:46):
J T.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Sanders needs to catch that ball on the sideline, perfectly
placed ball, that was a DoD Bryce Young threw a
perfect ball to Tedor mc millan in the end zone
that could have been a touchdown, but he's interfered with
and Tedt's got to get his other hand up too.
Like there were great throws from Bryce yesterday. So I'm
not the baby out with the bathwater, but i am
in sense that the cerebral quarterback whose superpower is processing
(13:06):
and being smart, did some very dumb things out there
yesterday that is concerning.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Let's get Rod in here real quick. Rod, what's going on?
Speaker 7 (13:16):
Kyle? What's happening up? Man? You said too early? Is
not too early. This is not an overreaction. Just because
he had a couple a few good games at the
end of the season, that't means he's cerminently our guy.
If the Packers could say, sorry, far, we want Aaron Rodgers.
If Montana can end up in Casey and Wadahill Kate,
(13:38):
Bryce end up somewhere other than Carolina, now that's number one,
but number two canalists. I love canalists. Nothing against canalists.
I think the coordinator canalist is brilliant, but the head
coach I just see them right now in the locker room,
right now, Monday morning, Monday afternoon, burning candles, candles, win
(13:59):
everyone sitting around in a circle, Indian style, legs cross
Indian style, just somehow trying to meditate this thing away.
That's what I get. That's the vibe he gives. He
doesn't have no grit to me, it seems at least,
you know, like him as a coordinator McDermott as a decordinator,
Fox he as a head coach, that'd be the perfect storm.
(14:21):
I feel like personally, I just need a coach that
just has a little bit of something. And then Morgan, Hey, man,
some guys are made to be players. I don't have
to be a player to say this, and I hope
he's listening. Some guys are made to be players. It
does not mean that they're made to put together a
team the coach to general manage whatever. He can't do it, man,
these guys that he's put together, that's our problem. We're
(14:42):
looking at everything, but the real problem then Morgan can't
put together a team full of ball players. He can't
and these guys that we got dag ballplayers, man exavierly
get The best part about him is his accent. That
is it. This guy gets on the field and can't
make a block, a simple block as big as he is,
we could have made that block. Call me and you
(15:02):
that got me. Come on, man, we need ball players
and we don't have it. Dayla Cocher. I wait, I
can't wait till he gets back. And I would love
to see Jimmy Horn get on the field because I
feel like, at least he gets out there, he's going
to have something, some grit about him to make something happen,
and we just don't have that guy that's.
Speaker 5 (15:18):
Doing that right now.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
Thank you, buddy. Appreciate the phone call. We got people
that are our preach ride on the text line. Great call.
He's killing it. Other people saying tar heel swaff. Come
on now, Dan Morgan isn't the issue. So we got
a brand new debate raging on the FanDuel text line.
If you're on the phone lines, hang tight. We're going
to take your calls. I promise you that, But we
got to go back when we return. Eric McLain, acc
Network College football analysts. We paused from the Panthers for
(15:40):
a couple of minutes. Kind of a wild weekend in
college football. The matchups weren't great, but we had some upsets,
some near upsets, and a whole lot of hand ringing
coming out of the weekend, including Yours Truly Sports Radio
ninety two to seven WFNZ, Carolina mad Men on the
(16:08):
Fan duel text line says, KB, I'm not panicking yet.
Bryce is a little concerning. Xavier Leaguet is very concerning,
but we knew he was raw. We knew this team
wasn't ready to compete for the conference or playoffs. Take
a deep breath. It's just one week with basically no
preseason field time. Losing's not the issue. It's looking completely inept.
It's looking unprepared and disorganized, and by the way, Dave
(16:31):
Canalis admitted yesterday at the end of his press conference,
they were unprepared. They looked disorganized right, multiple timeouts as
the play clock was expiring, running the play clock down
to one second, Difficulty getting the play in lining up properly,
lack of communication, interruptions, hiccups between Bryce Young and Austin Corbett,
which absolutely threw off and screwed up at least three
(16:52):
or four plays yesterday. By the way, Austin Corbett looked
like a shell of himself down to Jacksonville yesterday.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
We're gonna get back to it.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
But yesterday we had rain delay in the Panthers game
in Jacksonville seventy two minutes. They also had a rain
delay in Death Valley on Saturday, and it looked pretty
hairy there for a while against Troy. In fact, we
had rain delays all over the place in college football
in a Week two schedule that was certainly down relative
to Week one, but produced some really interesting moments, some
(17:20):
very horrible moments for some of us, but at least
Clemson survived. I guess and Clemson's Moving on to Week three.
We've got former Clemson offensive lineman ACC Network analyst our
buddy Eric McClain back with us for a Monday conversation.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
eMac, what's up, brother, how are you hey?
Speaker 7 (17:35):
I love the well Clemson one.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
I guess, and I guess it was okay, Dolle. It
would have been real fun to do like a live
in game interview with me at halftime, man, because I
was going nuclear. It was unbelievable. The bad football that
I was watching and just not understanding why, not understanding how?
(17:59):
And I did a little film breakdown. I mean I
could have put forty plays on there, and we could
have talked about all kinds of different things. But you know,
try to do a little something, show some people kind
of what I'm seeing, and hopefully you know, it's all
relatively fixable. It's just settling down. Specifically, looking at your quarterback,
take your read, take what you've done a thousand times,
and man, you're not in that situation. It's it's bizarre.
(18:22):
But he settled in a little bit in the second half.
They fought like crazy, you know, scored twenty four points
to zero in the second half. I guess that's something
to be excised about.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Yeah, And the thing is, you and I both know
if they win Week one against LSU, then we look
at that game Saturday and say, okay, you know, big
drop down in competition. You know, maybe you kind of
expect them to be flat. But because of what happened
in Week one, you know, you got the fan base
now thinking, oh god, what are we You know, are
we just a good team that came back from last
year and we're not any better. You know, Dabo was
really talking up the effort in the postgame press conference, like,
(18:54):
what's the truth about this team after that effort?
Speaker 3 (18:56):
In your eyes?
Speaker 5 (18:57):
Well, I think there's a little bit of a hangover effect.
I mean, you saw it with South Carolina, you saw
it with LSU, you saw it with Clemson, where you know,
you have this big time game, uh, and then you
know you're playing a lower caliber opponent but still a quality,
you know, opponent that could obviously beat you, as Clemson
about found out, you know, and you let them hang
(19:18):
around and you don't handle business and you don't play
to the same intensity and the ask the tale as
old as time and things that you know, I dealt
with back in the day when I was playing, and
certainly there'll be others to deal with it, you know,
later in life. But it's that hard, uh, you know,
kind of put it in the rear view mirror. Let's
go and still give great effort. It's hard to replicate
that energy. But at the end of the day, man,
(19:39):
these opportunities are so far and few, you know, in between.
I mean, we play I guaranteed twelve games, that's the
seven of them. You hope at home uh, and so
you always want to put your best foot forward, and
you know that just really wasn't the case for about
maybe thirty minutes of football.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
All right, let's talk about NC State for a second.
State fans. Things are a little rough right now in
North Caro Carolina. You know, I think NANC State's fan
base is the only fan base that's like truly happy today,
wake Forest, I guess kind of. But they survived Virginia
and CJ. Bailey had himself a day two hundred and
forty four total yards, three total touchdowns. He got the
job done offensively. What did we think of their performance
(20:17):
against Virginia in a non conference game?
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Mind you Yeah, that's the fun part of that. You know,
it's all for not in regards to standings, but it
was a fun game, man, I mean back and forth,
you know, shot for shot, guy scoring touchdowns left and right,
and you're just finding a way to win. And you
know you mentioned CJ.
Speaker 7 (20:33):
Bailey.
Speaker 5 (20:33):
I love what I saw, you know from him and
the added wrinkle of the run game consistently, you know
from him, he average like right around eight yards to carry,
got into the end zone a couple of times, made
some really nice throws had a qbr at ninety, which
you know he was sixteen of twenty three. I guess
didn't put the ball too far in jeopardy. It was
fun to watch. I mean he orchestrated that offense, you know,
(20:55):
really really well. And then to have Hollywood Smothers, who
I've been begging and leading Frensis State to have a
run game and it looks like we've got something because
this guy's just running like a man on fire and
you know, really impressed me there. And you know, the defense,
like I keep going back and forth that they didn't
have a good day, right, they got rushed on two
(21:16):
hundred and sixty yards two hundred and sixty passing yards
as well. That's not good. But when they needed them
the most, they stood up and they made a play
and they got the deal, you know, kind of done.
They did the same thing against CCUS. So I guess
this year NC State's gonna be a ben don't break,
you know, type of team and you know, when you
(21:36):
need them to make a play, they will. So I
think there's some marginal things that you know, need to
get better there. It's gonna be fascinating to see how
that happens and who steps up and you know, can
they force more turnovers? Can they get their team you
know in good situations there. But I like what I
see from the wolf back and I thought this game
would be really pivotal and kind of change the course
for either team season. And we'll see if that holds true.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Eric work hanging out with us for his Monday conversation
Duke and Illinois. I had Manny Diaz on the show Thursday,
and he and I talked a lot about it. I
brought this up to him about, you know, this was
the quintessential we have to win in the trenches kind
of game, and he couldn't have agreed more obviously. And
in the first half Duke was doing a pretty good
job of that. And in the second half they just
(22:19):
fell apart and Mensa had three turnovers. They just kept
shooting themselves in the foot. They didn't do enough to
impact Altmeyer and he started making plays. Is that a
game where obviously we give Illinois credit for winning it,
but forty five nineteen I think is a little bit
misleading for how this game largely went. Like, if you're
a Duke fan, how do you feel about that effort?
Coming out of the game.
Speaker 5 (22:39):
Yeah, it's definitely misleading. I mean, you're going to halftime
and you're down by one and you're feeling really good
about your plan of attack. You you know, are really
you're dominating the lines of scrimmage. They had four stacks
in the first half, absolutely stoning the run, and they
did that pretty much all game. Illinois averaged under the
(23:00):
yards of carry for the game. For a team that's
gonna run the ball very effectively for the rest of
the year. There and and as you mentioned, they just
kept hurting themselves capt shooting themselves in the foot for
a variety and multitude of things, which is bizarre. You know,
from the double numbers to the you know ball in jeopardy,
not having two hands on the football and giving it
(23:21):
away to you know, making a silly decision and having
a pick to you know, uh, you stop them. I
mentioned the double numbers, You stop them. On third down.
You're getting the ball back to have a very pivotabal,
monumentum stealing type of situation here, and it's a flag
automatic first down. They walk down and score. And after
that that's where things started to go awry. You've got
(23:44):
to drop punt give the ball right back to them.
You have you know, silly uh climbing down play or
downfield penalties that wiped away a touchdown offensively. So there
was just a lot of weird, random things that that
pops up Duke was doing to themselves. And you know,
you like to think some of it is coaching that
(24:04):
you can get it out and you know, get more
efficient and figure things out, but you know a lot
of it you just you can't do that against a
top twelve opponent one hundred percent. You can't do that
against the quality opponent. And that's where you know, Illinois
started to run away from it, and you talk about
the snowball effect.
Speaker 7 (24:21):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (24:21):
They went into score I think it was somewhere in
the thirties, kind of put the game away, and I'm like, okay, well,
you know, maybe Duke can can you know, put a
little drive here together. I look away for a second,
I look back in Illinois walking right back in the
end zone. I'm just like, what is going on? So
it was a snowball? I think you feel okay, but
certainly disappointed.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
Eric real quick on North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
They went into Charlotte's Saturday evening and it kind of
felt like TCU. They score on the opening possession, big
pass from Lopez, and then after that it was a
lot of men, right. They didn't score a touchdown in
the second half. If you're looking at it optimistically, I
guess you could say they managed the game to make
sure they got out of there with a win, because
Charlotte has no semblance wa soever of offense or quarterback play.
(25:02):
But you know, I'm talking to Heels fans coming out
of Saturday, and they don't feel much better about that
team today than they did last Monday or last Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
I should say, yeah, I don't know why.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
You would, you know, to be honest. So we'll see.
I mean, I think this's gonna be a really long
season for Carolina. I think just at the end of
the day, you probably just don't have the players. And
the good thing is you can go out and get
them pretty quick. It's just going to have to wait
till twenty six to be able to do that. But
you know, can you try to find some type of
type of spark. Is Lope is going to be the guy?
(25:32):
Is that the guy you feel best about? It's just
it's bizarre, man, So Heels fans lock in and strap
in because it's going to be a long one.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
All right, now, let me get this misery out of
the way. You know, I know, I know. We have
a lot of Virginia Tech alumni here in the Charlotte region,
several of whom reached out to me over the weekend
specifically to say they were looking forward to hearing what
you had to say about this today. I like Brett Priye.
I've told Brett Pride, who has faced multiple times, that
I'm rooting for him. I really wanted to work out that.
I know it matters to him and they He's a
(26:00):
good guy and he's still recruiting pretty well. But Eric,
I don't think the guy can coach. And I hate
to say it, but you've got a twenty to ten
lead against Vanderbilt. You've got all the motivation in the
world after what happened to you last year in that
game in overtime out there, you lose a tough one
to South Carolina where you couldn't find any offense. You've
got to sell out crowd coming off of that. The
wind is at your back, and it seems like Clark
(26:22):
Lee and company made one or two adjustments after halftime
and Virginia Tech just rolled over thirty four to nothing.
They get out scored in the second half in Blacksburg
on Saturday night. I'm surprised he still got a job today.
Quite frankly, Eric, what are your thoughts?
Speaker 5 (26:36):
Yeah, it was pretty alarming and pretty concerning. I'll tell
you what was the cherry on top, and not a
good cherry. Was just the lack of urgency in the
press conference, Yes, and like the lack of emotion. I
mean I was watching that, like, did we just see
the same game? Like did the same outcome just occur
in your mind what we saw in the field? And
I don't know, man, like not inspired at all. And
(26:58):
it's just it's just an issue. And you know, I
think there's a lot of things that are stacking up
very quickly. But the one score game record, which is abysmal,
it's the worst in all of college football. And then
the lack of adjustments that we've seen in the last
two weeks, in particularly getting out scored forty eight to
three in the second half of the first two games
(27:18):
of the season is inexcusable. And that's that's coaching, man,
that's the point. That's why you're paying millions of dollars
to figure this out and to have better schemes and
just to do things of that nature. And so it's
super disheartening because I'm right there with you with Coach Prora.
I think it's a great dude. I think he's a
great defensive mind. For whatever reason, it did not work.
(27:39):
And I say that in the past tense because I
think it's done. It's just a matter of time. I
don't know what the contract situation is, what the buyout
numbers look like, five and a half.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
Million, five and a half million dollar buyout. It's doable.
Speaker 5 (27:50):
Make a call, you get it on the phone, KB
and do it.
Speaker 3 (27:53):
Yeah you want me to cut the check out? Yeah,
just write it.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
Just write it and get it done. And then you know,
now it's who you go get and what do you
try to do there? So you know, I it's a
touchy situation. It thinks I hate that that happens, But
this is a business and at the end of the day,
it's a multi million dollar close to a billion dollar business,
and you've got to do what's in the best interest
for your for your you know, historical university there and
(28:18):
the timing couldn't be worse right for these losses to
happen in this situation to happen. You just had your
athletic director get on a meeting and lay out how
we need all this money to be able to compete
and to be able to play at the big dog level.
And then you have a coach that you don't know
if he can get you to that level. And clearly
it doesn't look that way with the win loss record
(28:39):
and the things that you know happen in these bigger games.
So I think it's unfortunate. It'll be fascinating, you know,
to see what the outcome is when the outcome happens.
And at the end of the day, I will say
this before we move on or get out of here.
That fan base you deserve that. I mean, that place
is always rocking. It's one of the best brands of fall.
(29:00):
Those fans, no matter what, show up, show out and
are loud, and they deserve something to cheer for. Not
just the quality of I love Virginia Tech. No, I
have a really good football team and I'm going to
bring it. So I hope that happens soon, man, because
we've been missing that for sure. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
No, it's been reduced to a great entrance and then
an ass kicking ensues. All right, before I let you
out of here, last thing, just looking ahead to week three.
Not a huge acc slate coming up this weekend. We
do have the backyard Brawl. I know that's non conference,
but you know a lot more non conference stuff, But
we do have Clemson Georgia Tech to bring it full
circle here. This game's in Atlanta. Sounds like Haines King
was getting arrested up for this one this past weekend.
(29:37):
And we know these two teams have delivered some classics
in the past. How much does this matchup concern you
as a Clemson fan?
Speaker 5 (29:43):
Oh man, it's terrifying, especially the timing of it. You know,
you've got a Clemson team that just is struggling in
reaching and trying to figure out who they are, and
you've got a Georgia Tech team that knows exactly who
they are, that had some adversity, won a game out
in Boulder, Colorado that looked invatic offensively last week. And
I get the competition, I know that, but it was
fun to watch and they're throwing the ball all over
(30:05):
the yard, running it, you know, for even more. The
fascinating thing to me is Vegas has it right now
as a nine and a half, you know, point spread
in favor of the Tigers. Meanwhile, the ESPN predictor has
Georgia Tech leaning fifty six percent to win. So it's
a little split here, and it's a fascinating thing. Man.
The Yellow Jackets are going to be physical. They have
(30:25):
not won this game in nine years. You best believe
they're going to be inspired and bring out all the
tips and tricks to try to get it done in
the flat.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Oh yeah, hete real quick. Sorry about this. I overlook
Thursday night. I was looking straight to Saturday. Any chance
Wake Forest upsets NC State Thursday night?
Speaker 5 (30:42):
If you get the ball to that running backs hands,
let me just tell you crazy things happened. Demon Claiborne
is a monster and I cannot wait to see that
matchup NC State. I mean, defensively, they're giving up whatever
you want so that they better have a plan in
place for number one. But I've always leaned quarterbacks.
Speaker 7 (30:59):
Man.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
I think Baileys as special as a coms. I think
he's a future superstar. He's a star now superstar in
this league. They probably get it.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Done love it.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Hey, we've kept you long enough. Thank you as always, brother.
We'll talk to you next Monday, no doubt.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
Man be good ericon.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
Klain eMac back on a Monday, each and every Monday.
During the college football season, seven oh four five, seven
ninety six to ten hit us up on the FanDuel
text line, Mark and Concord, saying that Carolina was playing
two games in six days. Belichick played it close to
the vest. They were never threatened. Yeah, that's true because
Tim Alvin has no offense. I mean, that's probably the
worst offense in America at Charlotte right now. I mean,
(31:35):
I'm sure you could point to four or five others.
You know, there are a lot of college football teams
that are nearly as bad, but Charlotte's up there is
the worst offense in America.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
After the first couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
I don't know what to make of app State surviving
Linden Would over the weekend.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
That was I looked at the scarm like and it
was late and for Hi'm like what, I don't know
what to make of that. Either app really loafed this
game or Lindon Wood's good. I don't know what the
record would was an SECS last year.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
But yeah, I didn't even know where linden Wood was.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
I don't either. I don't either. And then around Saint Louis. Okay, well,
yeah you know what I did see that. Actually, yeah,
we'll come back and talk with you now, I know,
I know, We're We're wide open the rest of the way.
I got phone calls to get to Soprano, Bob, psl Sucker, Miguel,
Matt Hang tight, We're wide open the rest of the show.
Speaker 3 (32:21):
But right now we go to smoke on the headlights.
Speaker 4 (32:25):
What's funny that you did mention Charlotte because Kyle, uh,
we got an update here because Cheryl Moore is now
I'm not going to be coaching for the next two
games due to his show calls penalty due to that
whole investigation stuff.
Speaker 3 (32:36):
With Michigan over the last few years.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
So who's gonna be the interim head coach for the Wolverines?
Bif Pogy, Biff Bleeping Pogy. Yes, look, and he's gonna
go to and oh but I only want one thing, Biff.
You gotta let the hogs fly, gotta let him free
and breathe. Baby, I want to see your arms I
(32:58):
want to see the up t shirt in and arbor. Please,
for the love of God, for all that is holy,
please wear the cutoff shirt.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
I want to see it too. All right, listen, we'll
come back. We'll tell you who bought out. Will take
your phone calls the rest of the way. The Panthers
sucked yesterday. Most of your college football teams did too.
We'll talk about it. Sports Radio ninety two seven w

Cow bails out in Mississippi State ball out over the weekends.
They defeated ranked Arizona State twenty four to twenty.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
They're going crazy at Stark Vegas. Wow, I'm gonna go.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Fran Brown, head coach of the Syracuse Orange, who reminded
me there still are some old school coaches among the
young crop. He had his team running wind sprints after
a win on Saturday. They beat Yukon in overtime twenty
seven to twenty barely, barely, probably shouldn't have. And he
told his guys before the game, we looked like, crap,
you're running afterward, and by god they were. He had
(34:51):
him running wind sprints after a win at what I
guess used to be the Carrier Dome. I don't care
what the cam up piece. It's always got to be
the Carrier Dome. Fran Brown bawling out. I'll throw John
Mattier in there as well. I think Oklahoma's got himself
a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
CJ.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Bailey had a great week for NC State as well.
And uh yeah, we'll just stop there rattling off good
weeks in college football.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
Yeah all right, Yeah, Well more worried about you. Yeah,
it was that you're a hockey fan.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
Yeah, well, like this is the most you've actually texted
me in a three day period, over the last three.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
Days, Yeah it is.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
But like like I've told you, I'm I'm nearing the
breaking point, like I'm about to I'm about to quit
and just go buy ten acre or somewhere in the
mountains and just homestead, like I'm gonna get chickens and
goats and practice the banjo every day and get rid
of my smartphone. And I'm just gonna stop watching football.
After the weekend that I just had, I didn't think.
I'm telling you, man, Saturday night, My Saturdays are spent
(35:47):
with the family. I got little kids, you know, they're
watching the Tech game with me. They're watching all the
college football. And by the time that game comes on
on Saturday night, I'm trying to you know me, I'm
trying to get back into fight in shape. I'm watching
that game on the treadmill. I'm just contemplating all of
my life's decisions watching the second half of that game
while I'm getting the workout in.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
It's pathetic.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
I like Brent Pride, but you have never seen a
worse coaching job in your life than what you saw
Saturday night in Blacksburg. It was pathetic, and I like
Brent it was, but it's sickening, like you can't coach.
The guy can't coach. He's one in seventeen. Now in
one possession geared like a trailing going into the fourth
quarter one possession games. They were zero to six in
games decided about ten points or less last year. I'm
(36:29):
not trying to be mean. The numbers speak it. You
cannot coach, and you're not a head coach, and so
go ahead and rip the bandaid off and fire him
and let Philip Montgomery finish the rest of the season.
Then fire the ad at the end of the year
and move on and start from scratch.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
Let's take some phone calls here. We are wide open
the rest of the way because and again after Saturday night,
I woke up hoping that the Panthers could possibly salvage
my weekend and they made it even worse. So anyway,
let's take some phone calls. Matt and greensbro is up
first in the segment, Matt, what's going on?
Speaker 12 (37:00):
Hey guys, what's going on?
Speaker 5 (37:01):
Uh?
Speaker 12 (37:02):
Maybe this guy isn't following, but uh, sir, feels like
we're underwater and can't get to the top. And I
don't know when that's going to happen. It's just so frustrating,
you know. I think the issues on offense are definitely
more fixable. I mean, there was a lot of mistakes
by other players besides Bryce, and Bryce had his part too,
(37:24):
But Man League, Yeah, I'm gonna start calling him becau Zavier.
Speaker 5 (37:27):
Forget.
Speaker 12 (37:30):
I don't want to forget. He was ever on this team.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
That's good, man, I oh my god, that's good.
Speaker 7 (37:37):
That's good.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
That's good stuff.
Speaker 12 (37:40):
And somebody else brought himself about Canalis. Man, he does
kind of feel like an offensive coordinator in this moonlighting
as a head coach right now. Any head coach with
his salt would have fired that bomba Biro in the offseason.
I don't care that there was a bunch of injuries.
That was historically a bad defense, and it's not getting
any better. And I don't know what the fix on
that side of the ball is. Every team's gonna line
(38:01):
up and run it down our throats and we can't
do nothing about it.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
Oh it's pitiful.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Thank you, Matt. Appreciate the phone call in the laugh.
They were better in the second half against the run.
I'll give them that. Not great, but they were better.
They only gave up sixty six yards rushing in the
second half. Speaking of what you just said, someone accusing
Canalis of being on offensive coordinator moonlighting as a head coach.
That perception isn't helped with answers like this. In the
(38:26):
press conference earlier today, when Canalis was asked about the
young players not getting a ton of snaps defensively while
it is actually happening on the offense.
Speaker 11 (38:37):
Yeah, well, I'm pushing that, you know. I'd love for
all of our young guys to play. I really believe
that it's so valuable for those guys to be out there.
Are they going to be perfect?
Speaker 7 (38:46):
No?
Speaker 11 (38:47):
Will every rep that they take be a valuable and
beneficial for their future? Yes, you know, And so I
would love for those guys to get opportunities out there
so that we can see what we have. And then
also just knowing like it's long season and a lot
of people are gonna play, you know, at different times,
and so it'll help us, you know, going forward.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
He's pushing to get the young defenders out. He's pushing
for it. Bro, you are the head coach, you're the
head coat. You shouldn't be pushing for anything. You should
be dictating it. You should be telling your defensive coordinator
get Nick Scott off my football field. I want Leathan
Ransom to get some more run out there, please, because
Nick Scott ain't getting the job done, and we suspected
that was the case in camp, and then yesterday, voila,
(39:29):
it came to fruition. I'm not saying that Lathan Ransom
needs to play seventy percent of the snaps, but what
did he play nine all day? Wasn't Nick Scott on
the field for one hundred percent of the defensive snaps yesterday?
Speaker 4 (39:39):
I was one of the five players that was for
all sixty six defensive snaps and also Princely Uman Miellen
only played eight snaps.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
So you're pushing for your You're not. You shouldn't be
pushing for anything. You are the head coach. Decree it,
or tell his ziro Evro to get his ass to
the locker room if he won't do it. I don't
know what the situation is, but when you tell me
you're pushing for it, you're implying that you're what you
need to ask permission that he's doing what he wants
over there. You're the head football coach. That's the point.
(40:07):
PSL sucker up next, what's up, buddy?
Speaker 3 (40:09):
How are you? Oh?
Speaker 7 (40:11):
kV.
Speaker 13 (40:12):
You do a great show, and like some other callers
have alluded to, your ability to persevere in the face
of this abomination is admirable.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
Thank you.
Speaker 7 (40:23):
You.
Speaker 13 (40:23):
Remember I called you two weeks ago, and I give
you no pleasure, but I told you this was going
to happen, and I got absolutely lit up by the
text line he told me, Yeah, that was gonna be supposed.
But you know, this is quite obvious. I mean, this
is a horrible, horrible football team. This is not a
(40:45):
one off or one week thing. I mean, I think
I called you six years ago and I told you
we were going to be bad for a decade, and
now it looks like it's going to be longer than that.
I mean, the likely scenario here is we limp along
with Bryce's for a couple of years, we go, you know,
four and thirteen, five and twelve, something like that, we
(41:06):
decline his option, and then they clean house at that
point and bring in a new quarterback and a new
coach and a new GM and the bottom line, and
it's quite obvious, and you can hear NFL insiders allude
to this if you listen between the lines, if you
pay attention to what they're saying, you have an extraordinarily
(41:28):
disfunctional organization here, and everybody in this league knows it well.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
I don't think that requires reading between the lines, though.
I think that's been pretty obvious, hasn't.
Speaker 13 (41:38):
It, right, I mean you just talked about it. Yeah,
I mean, why can't this guy, why can't Canalis get
We'll get what he wants with the defense. But the
problem is, because you have a well known disfunction organization,
you will never be able to bring in the football guru,
whether that's a Hardbaugh typeer or what have you, to
(41:59):
set it right and what you'll have for the foreseeable future,
add infinitum till the end of time is mediocre people
at best and mediocre results at best. And that's what
we're looking at here for the future in Carolina. It's
never going to get better. It's a long, bleak future here,
(42:21):
all right.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
I appreciate the Latin translation there at the end. Thank
you brother for the phone call. Listen, we'll come back,
soprano Bob Miguel Carolina Jay up first wide open, five
