Is on the Horn Radio Network. Yeah, going from Charleston
to Okay, so he does is quite a change.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, from North Charleston Coliseum, low country food. Yeah, shrimp
and grits out though, what do they eat?

Speaker 5 (01:22):
Like?

Speaker 6 (01:22):
What is Oklahoma known for terms of food?

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Are they?

Speaker 2 (01:26):
I went there once for my uncle's wedding as a kid.
That's the only time I've ever been to Oklahoma.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
How many Ernie Sims barbecue joints hunter there or Billy Sims?
Billy Sims? I got my Sims mixed up? Uh, I
got very confused. Okay, barbecue sauce because good Old Jr.
Has barbecue sauce.

Speaker 6 (01:42):
Oklahoma's not known for barbecue sa sauce, are they?

Speaker 7 (01:44):
Well?

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Jim Ross Okay, but Jim Ross's barbecue sauce doesn't mean
that Oklahoma's known for that.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
Jim Ross is from Oklahoma. That doesn't you know theme
songs to Oklahoma fight sauce.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
That next guest knows about food, He probably knows the
answer better than we do. Michael Felder, former tar Heel
defensive back, East mech Eagle, podcaster Learfield College Sports now
hand in the Dirt podcast. You've seen him on Stadium,
You've seen him on Bleacher Report, he's done it all.
Mike Felder back with us for a Thursday conversation. Mike,
is Oklahoma known for any good food?

Speaker 8 (02:13):
Catfish?

Speaker 6 (02:14):
Really?

Speaker 8 (02:16):
Oklahoma and Arkansas that's where you're gonna find the best catfish.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
We're talking like in the plains are like more like
you said, Arcis are like the Ozarks.

Speaker 6 (02:23):
What are we talking about? What do we think?

Speaker 8 (02:25):
Yeah? Like where they got those light where people go
what's it called when you put your hand in the
hole and then pull them out noodlan? Yeah, Yeah, that's it.

Speaker 6 (02:35):
Yeah, you ever done that? It's fun?

Speaker 8 (02:37):
I have never done it. Not interested. Man. I don't
like to put my hand in the places I can't see.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Well, I live dangerously, so I understand. I would have
thought that South Carolina had better catfish than than Oklahoma.
But okay, all right, well it's good to know. Hey buddy,
good to have you.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Let me.

Speaker 6 (02:54):
Let me dive right in.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
What is your understanding of the situation at Chapel Hill
Right now? We all know the news, We've all seen
the reporting yet yesterday that the end could be near.
But we got statements last night and another report from
on three that Bill has been burning up the phones
talking to recruits in the last twelve hours. What's your
understanding of what's going on.

Speaker 8 (03:10):
He's trying to mend the damage. I think that, so
let's we got to go backwards to go forward. He
took this job to make to try to get his
kids jobs. Got it. Every dad wants their kids to
be good, well off right, and so that's what you want.
And then in the state of North Carolina, you can't
do that. You can't kind of bequeath, if you will,

(03:32):
a job to your kids. So that didn't work out.
We saw how the buyout worked out, and now what
we're dealing with is a situation that's quite volatile. And
talking to what I talked to Andrew Jones, we did
He and I did a couple of videos together for
Tar Hill twenty four seven. I talked to my man,
Chip Patterson from CBSHQ. I talked to Richard Johnson from CBS,

(03:55):
like we've all talked and I've talked to people like
my teammates and everything, and the reality is this is
I'm not gonna say it's in reconcilt, in reconcilable, but
it's gonna be like there's problems and the biggest thing
is the embarrassment, right, the embarrassment from people that went

(04:17):
to you and see in the sixties, seventies, eighties, even
in the nineties where they're like, we never thought we
would be a laughing stock. And I think that's the
biggest part. Like you you live like you live here.
I live in South Charlotte, man, like like this is
people are looking around like, oh no, because we live

(04:38):
we're next door neighbors with Clemson people. My next door
neighbor went to Clemson. My across the street neighbor went
to Clemson, like we it's one of those things where
we saw Clemson. Really they called the dogson. They could
have scored one hundred points if they wanted to, and
it's really they're in a rough spot. And then you talk,

(04:59):
you hear about the I'm sure you saw the wr
L report and some of this stuff out of CBS
where they're talking about fights in the locker room, about
the lack of even like interaction with Belichick from the
players and the lack of uh interaction from Steve Belichick,
the lack of interaction with him, and it just they

(05:21):
said the facility is a toxic place. So I just
I'm these are all things that I have heard before.
But I was like, I don't know, Like now everybody
is kind of but Colmas, I d say, like, like
they're they they the Damn's open.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Okay, let me stop here, Yeah, let me stop you
right there, because I still have a handful and it's
not the majority. I think most Carolina fans that I
talked to on a daily basis on this show, they
get it. They're embarrassed by it, they're pissed off about it. Uh,
they understand it for what it is. I still have
a handful like this one guy, his literal name on
the text line is Goofy. He's telling us to stop
spreading to be a Bill isn't going anywhere. Dabo goes

(06:02):
before Bill. He keeps saying it's not a disaster, and
people blame the media. You know, are you guys are
just loving this? Well, there's no doubt there's chum in
the water here. Okay, no one's denying that. But the
reason there's chum in the water is because it got out,
not because the chum didn't exist ahead of time, Not because,
as you're pointing out, it wasn't toxic inside the building
that you know Bill hasn't been distracted, or that Michael
Lombardi hasn't acted like a jerk to a lot of

(06:23):
people like the there are real problems that seem to
have really upset the people that matter in Chapel Hill,
and it seems like you're affirming that right now.

Speaker 6 (06:32):
Is that the case? And do you think it's fixable?

Speaker 8 (06:36):
I don't know how you fix it unless, like you know,
I that's that's a lie. That's wrong. I shouldn't have
said that. I know how you fix it. It takes effort.
Now you have to do that. You have to put
the effort into it. And that's the part that that's
the question mark for me. That means you do have
to shake hands with everybody. That means you do have

(06:57):
to make yourself available to the local media. It does
mean you have to make yourself available to the boosters.
You have to talk to them. You have to make
them feel like they're wanted, right, so you have to
make them feel like they matter. And it's a rough
spot to be in. And I literally am in the
middle of writing a piece right now where I think
we need to retire the words this team is back.

(07:20):
We also need to retire sleeping giants. And as a
Virginia tech guy, being back is a thing that people
say it and then they unsay it and say it
and unsay it. And as a UNC guy, sleeping giant
is like, yeah, we've been called that since what nineteen
eighty eight? Like what do we do? So you have

(07:41):
to you And the craziest part is this was a
thing that Bubba Cunningham, UNC's athletic director did not want
to have happened. He didn't want this to be like
part of his legacy. He's already got, He's already in
He's already up to his neck in it.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (08:00):
With the whole car the whole Carolina North thing, and
and and moving from the DEANDOM to another stadium, that's
a whole other can of worms. It is. They're going
to have to make a choice, and the choice is
not easy. And and what we're seeing I don't know
if you did you I'm sure you read the w
R A L stuff. Oh yeah, but they're starting to

(08:22):
use words that are one cutting down the buyout? Was
it the wide receivers coach wasn't there at practice because
of he's under They're they're investigating him for some recruiting violations,
so they're they're working to find a way to get
out from under this, and then obviously issue a statement

(08:42):
that says, no, we're all in the same page. We're happy,
but I don't think anybody's happy.

Speaker 6 (08:50):
They shouldn't be.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
And Mike, I, I, you know, I never want to
be personal about this stuff, but to me, it all
goes back to Jordan Hudson for me, like, I mean,
we can blame John pryor start.

Speaker 6 (08:59):
What's that.

Speaker 8 (09:00):
That's the start, that's the start. That's that's the beginning.
That's the that's the beginning. Because when you have someone
who when you have a lady who donates a ton
of money to you and c who graduated in the seventies,
she doesn't want to sit at a scholarship dinner with
a twenty four year old she does not like again,

(09:21):
to go back to style, Charlotte, that lady does not
want to sit across from a twenty four year old,
A seventy year old lady, a fifty five, sixty five
year old lady doesn't.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
Want to do that, right. It's embarrassing to.

Speaker 8 (09:31):
Know exactly, and we already talked about embarrassment. Correct, And
so it's one of those things where you have to
you have to know, in the words of my wife,
you have to read the room. And I don't know
that this staff reads the room in a in a
very good way. I don't think that they read the room.

(09:51):
I don't think they understand you and see. The number
one thing that you can't do is embarrass us. If
you embarrass that's the biggest problem. It's not the losing.
We've lost a lot, are you kidding me? When I
was at UNC in two thousand and three, my freshman year,

(10:11):
we had the number one returning tackler in the country
and he got destroyed by Greg Jones. We can live
with that. We lost the duke in two thousand and three,
we're two and ten. Couch Bunny kept his job. We
could live with that. But you can't embarrass us, and
that was one of the things. That's that's a part

(10:34):
and every school's different. I will say this, but when
these people, the money people, feel embarrassed, then you have
a problem. And that's the problem that they're having right now.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Yeah, seems he thought he was bigger than the job too.
Michael Felder, former Tarheel defensive back East mech Eagle college
football analyst with us on the hotline. Here they can
find your work again. You do a lot of great
stuff in a lot of places, but they can find
some of your work at tarhel two four seven right now.

Speaker 8 (11:00):
Yes, yeah, Trio twenty four to seven. We just did it.
We just put a video. But on the utube. We
there's another video that's up also, a short, a type video.
If you don't have a lot of time, there's a
type video that's up. It's about I don't know, maybe
two minutes ninety seconds and me and Andrew Jones. Andrew Jones
has been covering you and see he was at Inside
Caroline and he's stuck around with twenty four to seven.

(11:21):
So he's doing his thing too. And it was good
to talk to him because he's even more connected than
I am, which is wild, but he's been doing it
for so long he knows everybody.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Oh listen, I told somebody yesterday. I was texting with
Andrew during the show yesterday. Back when he was a
Rivals national college football writer fourteen years ago, when I
first started in radio, he was doing weekly hits with me.
So I've known Andrew for a long time, great guy,
very meticulous, very committed to his craft, and a lot
of respect for that guy now real quick, and I
want to hit you with a few other questions to

(11:50):
about other things. But if they do, if they do,
of course, tired a bit. I know, I get it,
you have to be. You have to be tired of this.
If they do move on mid season, what do they
how do they get through the rest of the year.
Who pilots the ship?

Speaker 8 (12:05):
I probably Gareth McGhee really like it's it's I don't
think it's going to be like because there was the
room for the original rumors that they were just going
to fire pretty kitchens. That doesn't happen, and I think
he's the coach is doing probably the best job. But
I think probably Garrett McGee. So we'll see, because it
won't be any of the Belichicks, because I think that's

(12:28):
if that's what you're getting at.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
I don't think it'll be No, that would be preposterous.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
You can't do that. That would be like laughably, there's
no way that's not even on the table.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
Can't be right.

Speaker 8 (12:37):
So I think it'd be I think it'll end up
being either Freddy or Garrett I think those are the
two answers, and then we'll go from there.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
Love it all right, So let's do this, let's talk
about it. You mentioned Virginia Tech since you're talking about
mid season firings, and you know, we got this is
about to be I think a pretty crazy coaching carousel
season coming up in a couple of months. More coaches
will get fired. But just in terms of you know,
they're in Blacksburg. They've committed an extra They just an
extra two hundred and thirty million dollars, Mike, I don't
know where they found it. They turned over some couch questions,

(13:04):
but they found it. They got Bruce Arians, big couch.
They got Bruce Arians consulting trying to find a new
head coach. They're going to hire a general manager. Who
would you be looking for? What kind of coach would
you be looking for?

Speaker 8 (13:17):
Honestly, I called I called it Jerry neuheisel Man. I
would I'm calling him. And I also the other thing
that I would do, knowing the way that you and
Ce treated them, I would call some raw who's at
what two A? And Matt Campbell? Who you and CE
kind of a shoot like you and C really pushed them,

(13:38):
those guys off to get Belichick. Come on, let's go,
let's go, let's be let's be mean, like, let's go,
let's go out and get rude. And I think that's
an interesting one. And then I'm looking at is it
bad to say I'm hiring the guy from.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
ODU, Ricky Ricky Ronnie?

Speaker 8 (13:55):
Really? Why not?

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Well, I don't know. I mean that's why not.

Speaker 8 (14:02):
He knows the todd Water he does, he does beat
all twice, so why not him?

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Yeah, it's a fair point. It's a fair point. All right,
Let's look ahead here real quick. How good do you
think Duke is? By the way that they seem to
be the only team right now with really a chance
to do much of anything moving forward?

Speaker 3 (14:19):
How good is manny d as his team?

Speaker 8 (14:22):
I think they're a good football team. I think their
defense is underrated. I don't think people we pay so
much attention to mensa, we don't talk about the defense.
And I think that they are a very good football team,
and watching them play is really exciting, like minus the
two end game, which there's a lot going in the
two in game because Men's obviously transferred from there. But

(14:42):
I think Duke's really good. I think Miami. I think
right now in the ACC, I think it goes Miami one.
I think Clemson and Duke are kind of living in
the same space. I think Clemson, Duke, and Georgia Tech
are living in the same space. And then you have
the rest of the league. And because on any give,
any given Saturday, empty State with C J. Billy, they

(15:04):
could bubble up. But but if we're just putting them
in tiers, I think I think there there's a one
with Miami, and then we have these three teams together,
and then you gotta look at what we're gonna get
out of the rest of those guys. And so I
think Duke is in that second tier, which is a
good place to be like that. I don't know if
they're gonna do it like when they beat you and C,

(15:26):
but they might. They might as well go ahead and
take that picture like Steve Spurrier did when they beat
you and C.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Do you give South Carolina any chance at LSU on
Saturday night?

Speaker 8 (15:39):
I do, But I don't think it's a South Carolina thing.
I think it's an l s U problem where LSU
for me one, I will say this, I love the
middle of that defense right yep, with with West let
me get them right, with Web and Harold Perkins Jr.

(16:03):
And then as a backup you get to throw in
Zach like three brothers that have played together, and then
Harold Perkins, who I don't know if you've seen his story,
but it's.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
Remark it's incredible, Yes, and so you I love that part.

Speaker 8 (16:17):
They Their secondary is not up to LSU standards over
the course of a game. It's not. It's not like
when we saw them with Moe Claiborne and Patrick Peterson
and Tyron Matthews. They're not up to that standard. But
the middle of that defense is the toughest in football,
and I love them, and I think they're gonna give
Sellers problems. And then you throw in the fact that

(16:41):
I'm still waiting on because we saw Ka pop a
little bit last weekend right against you, and see sure,
I'm waiting on I'm waiting on Garrett and i' smier
to pop. I'm waiting on him to like do his thing.
I'm waiting on him to let him do his thing.
That's the other part. I think Brian Kelly is a
little bit too controlling. And the other thing I'm looking
for or is they've got to find a way to
run the football, which they haven't been doing very well.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
That's true.

Speaker 8 (17:05):
If they can run the ball and let Garrett because
here's the thing, and I've asked multiple people this, who's
the best quarterback coach that Garrett nest Meyer's ever had?

Speaker 3 (17:16):
I don't know.

Speaker 8 (17:18):
It's dead.

Speaker 6 (17:19):
Oh yeah, it's good. Yeah, it's the right answer.

Speaker 8 (17:20):
Yeah, So let him do what he does. And I
think that's the most important part. I feel the same
way about Arch Manning though. Let Arch do what he
does instead of micro managing him. Even but Arch has
to understand to go from Texas because Tessa's just lost
to Florida to speak about Texas, they need Arch to

(17:41):
realize that I don't have a great offensive line. I
need to go ball. I don't have extra beats to wait.
I need to throw the football. I think Garrett Nesmyern
needs to do the same thing, especially because they don't
have a run game.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Last thing, what are the odds that Miami is the
best team in the country, in.

Speaker 5 (18:01):
The entire country, the entire country.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
No, no, okay, why not?

Speaker 8 (18:07):
No? At Ohio State Oregon, those are the two that
are immediately like better than them.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
I'm fine with that answer, but I think Miami deserves
some part of the conversation.

Speaker 8 (18:19):
To me, that's fine. You can have a part of
the country like it's a pie, right and if you
have this pie, they get a slice of it. But
I think Ohio State and Oregon are eating a little
bit more of it because you know who's not eating
any of it is Penston.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
That's true, That's very very true. You and I will
have that conversation next time you're on.

Speaker 6 (18:40):
Brother.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
I appreciate it. We apologize for whatever phone line issues
that took place, but we're glad we could get you on. Man,
have a great week.

Speaker 8 (18:47):
It was fantastic. It's always good to hear your boys.
I hope you're doing well and you take it easy
and stay out of trouble.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
We'll do Michael Felder, former Tarheel defensive back, East mech
Eagle college football analyst and one of his He's got
a lot of jobs, one of them now though with
tar Heel two four seven. If you want to go
check out some more of the reporting over there, we'll
come back. We go back to back, will Pelacchik, Willie
p We'll talk some Panthers. We'll talk some Charlotte FC,
and a little bit of Hornets too. Sports Radio ninety
two to seven wfnz Ummy Hot.

Speaker 8 (19:22):
Dummy hat.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
Hey recruizing here on a Thursday, coming up five o'clock.
Charles Lee, head coach of the Charlotte Hornets. They've got
preseason game number two tonight. We'll talk about something with
him that smoke and I will get into. But the
annual NBA survey of General managers is out and it's
fairly flattering for one Brandon Miller. In fact, Brandon Miller
is tied with Victor Wimbayama, which is pretty cool for

(19:54):
the player expected to make the biggest leap coming up
in twenty twenty five twenty six. I think Ausar Thompson
is also tied for second, and first is Amen Thompson.
So you got Amen, you got both brothers that.

Speaker 6 (20:10):
Are are on that list.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
But you know, ten percent of NBA general manager surveyed
believe that Brandon Miller is the player most likely to
have a breakout season in twenty twenty five twenty six.

Speaker 4 (20:20):
I was going to say having a big jump being
compared to Victor woman Yamas pretty big because A, it's Victor,
and B Victor's actually grown this off season.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
Yeah, which it is. I'll mean, good god, Well I
don't see how that's possible, but apparently it is. And
so Brandon Miller again the player most likely to have
a breakout season this upcoming year, tied for second in
that voting and also in the NBA survey the rookie
that was the biggest steal at where he was selected

(20:48):
in the draft. Liam McNeely tied for fourth in the votes. So,
I mean, not to make too much of it, but
that's interesting. Now, conk, somebody asked earlier, is contindent? Well not, well, no,
because I don't think anybody thought he was a steal
at four. In fact, the conversation about con was was
he overdrafted at four? Some people thought yes, some people
thought no. But Leam McNeely coming in with tied for

(21:10):
fourth seven percent of the vote as the rookie, which
was the biggest steal at where he was drafted in
the NBA draft. Let's talk about that, among other things
with Will Polochik, Voice of Charlotte FC WFNZ host reporter.
He's back with us for a Thursday conversation will what
do you think of that Brandon Miller tied for second
in terms of breakout candidate for twenty twenty five twenty six.

Speaker 8 (21:30):
I'll go.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Wow, all right, that's top, world class analysis right there.
We'll try to get the line cleared up. Seven oh four, five,
seven ninety six ten. Will await what he has to
say right there. But again, Charles Lee coming up at
five o'clock, I will ask him how he plans to
manage the five spot, which is I think the really
big sticking point for a lot of Hornets fans in
terms of their optimism or belief in this season? Do

(21:55):
they have enough at the five spot? With Musa diabate,
Mason Plumley and Ryan call Uprenner? Is he back? We're
going to try it again? All right, let's go on
Mulligan here, Willie P. What do you think about Brandon
Miller as a breakdown candidate?

Speaker 9 (22:07):
Appreciated? Kyle, Sorry about that.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
I'm driving through the rolling hills of southern Indiana presently, so.

Speaker 9 (22:16):
Hopefully the connection stays.

Speaker 1 (22:17):
With But I'm actually interested in both of those things
you brought up on the lead in The McNeely thing
is incredibly interesting because of how I think we've got
to see in the summer league just how much of
a triple level score he is. He can shoot from
the outside, he can definitely take it off the bounce,
and also his driving ability. I think it is something
that we looked at and maybe didn't necessarily see as
much of in the latter part of his Virginia career.

(22:40):
But the Miller part's also equally fascinating, just because of
the fact that, you know, he obviously had that season
cut short a year ago, and people thought that that
might have curved a little bit of his development, But
I think he comes back a lot stronger. You worry
about whether or not the shooting motions affected by that
risk or not, But I think people look at his
work ethic and look also at his leadership, think about

(23:00):
the way that he was kind of carrying this group
from a vocal standpoint last year when things weren't exactly
going all that swimming league, and I think you're very
much looking at him potentially making a very very big
jump in year three, provided he's able to stay healthy
and not misbeat with not shooting percentage as well.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
Okay, I mean, what do you think about the five
spot then? We'll get onto other things because we have
plenty of time to talk corners. But it seems to
me that a lot of people look at this and say,
you know, that's the reason that they can't fully get
behind this team maybe making a charge toward the playoffs
is that they don't think they have enough Between Musa
plum Lee and Ryan Kulch Printer.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
It definitely makes me nervous. I think that Kaulk Printers
maybe more developmental than we might have initially thought. Although again,
the initial reviews at a training camp are very very
i I would say they're very very complementary his way.
So maybe he has taken a jump since Summer League.
Again he looked again and looked a bit more project
like in Summer League. That's not exactly the most fair

(23:54):
comparison because I think obviously when the when the competition
jumps up, you obviously see maybe a little bit of a
different side to him. I think plumb Lee is going
to play what they wanted Todz Gibson to do a
little bit more, but maybe on a larger scale, because
it does seem like he command more minutes than Tosh
could a year ago. And while Diabate, I think is
a very nice player. I still feel like he is

(24:17):
more undersized against some of the bigger NBA centers. You know,
your Joe l Embiid's, your Nikola Jokic's. I think that
those kind of players potentially could eat him up. I
think he's a great, you know, developmental offensive player, and
I think he's also great in certain spaces on some
nights when you'd want to start him. I just don't
know if he's good enough to be an every night
starter in the NBA. And I think Charles Lee is

(24:39):
going to mix and match. I think he's been very
out of him about the fact that, hey, you know,
they might be a different guy in there dependent on
what the opposition brings out there to the table. So
I think it's still a work in progress. I don't
think that they're one hundred percent clear at what they
want to do with that position as of yet from
a contending standpoint.

Speaker 9 (24:57):
But I think they're at least trying to piece mail.

Speaker 1 (24:59):
It together while they developed the other parts of this team,
like you mentioned with Konkin Nipple and obviously some of
the newer veterans that they've gotten around there.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
Like Colin Sexton will pilotchik with us here for a
Thursday conversation. Let's talk Panthers Cowboys here for a moment.
You and I will be back together in the press
box on Sunday. You know, on paper, this looks like
a game that could be a shootout. Dallas has a
very good offense and a very bad defense. Looks like
Carolina is getting healthy on offense. The run game finally
came alive, So I think on paper again, it adds

(25:26):
up to a bit of a shootout. Do you think
that's what we get? And how can Carolina take advantage?

Speaker 1 (25:32):
Yeah? Hopefully the news comes back good on Taylor Mowton
as well on that count from from Carolina. But like
you said, everybody else seems to be getting healthier. It's
great to see Jalen Cocher back as well in practice.
Whether or not he plays this week or not, I
think remains to be seen from a lot of people's perspective.
But at the same point in time, I look at
this and say that that Carolina feels like they're at
least trending in the right direction. I need to see

(25:54):
a second great game out of this squad in order
to feel a little bit better about it going forward,
because I think we all kind of got ourselves in
a frame of mine after the Atlanta game that, hey,
this might be something that's turning the corner, particularly the
way the defense played, and then they laid an egg
against New England, and then you come back this past
week and you're down seventeen to nothing before the chairs

(26:15):
were even warm, and then you come back and have
that amazing come from behind victory against Miami, and I
think you take a lot of the positives out of that,
but also you kind of figure out, well, how the
heck did it get there, And a lot of it
was because of Bryce, and a lot of it was
because also there was some defensive inconsistencies when it comes
to things that we've seen earlier this season, and able
to really cover the tight end and cover the boundary area.

(26:36):
I think those are two things that Dallas has very
very a depth.

Speaker 9 (26:39):
Ways of being able to exploit.

Speaker 1 (26:40):
So you have to be assignment correct. Wouldn't hurt it
turn the football over from the defensive side of the
offensive side for a little bit, And we need to
see our first sixty minute game from Bryce in order
for them to get themselves a victory, because I don't
think that they'll be able to fall behind the way
they did against Miami and come back to win against
Dallas the way they did last week. It's got to
be a six minute contest. And I think too, that'll

(27:02):
also be a nice harmager of things to come, because
they'll need more of those kinds of efforts to beat
the teams that they're going to see in the stomach
and half of the schedule, because the second half of
the schedule, as you know, Kyle, is much more daunting
than the opening six to seven games that they've played
so far.

Speaker 6 (27:15):
What do you think of Bryce so far?

Speaker 2 (27:17):
More specifically, you know, coming out of the way things ended.
I'm not gonna you know, I'll say last year, the
final five or six games of the year, all right,
I'm not going to go ten. I'm going to say
the final five or six games of the year where
he looked really good, had some great performances, and the
expectation that he could hit the ground running in twenty
twenty five. It has not been the case. It's not
been all bad. It certainly hasn't been as bad as
the start of last year. But the turnovers are killing them,

(27:39):
and he's made some really bone headed plays, but he's
made some good plays and some of the numbers are favorable. So, like,
what are we to make of the way Bryce is
played through five games?

Speaker 1 (27:47):
At its kindest, Kyle, I would call it uneven. At
its harshest, I'd call it disappointing, because I think we
all kind of thought that he could turn that corner
and be the guy that we saw in that final
month month and a half for the season, where you know,
he wasn't the reason they lost those games to Kansas
City and Philadelphia down the stretch, and he was the
reason why they were in other contests that maybe they

(28:09):
fell short or in games that we didn't think they
were gonna win last year. After the way things started
for him and the rest of the team in twenty
twenty four, we haven't seen that price yet for a
whole sixty minutes, And I think that's part of the
reason why I think people are still happy in trepidation
about whether or not you want to buy in on
where the Carolina Panthers are at this point, because the
biggest thing that needs to take place during this season

(28:32):
is you have to find out whether or not you
can get that price over a long stretch of time.
If it's only something that turns into an outlier, I
don't think the Panthers happen to a quarterback in the future.
It's played in simple But if you can get that
price for longer than a you know, three, four, five
game stretch, and you can get the rest of the
team around and developing, then you have your quarterback. But
I think it really needs.

Speaker 3 (28:53):
To come a lot of it from him.

Speaker 1 (28:55):
You know, the wins are nice, and I think again,
no one's gonna look a gift.

Speaker 9 (29:00):
Horsing them out when it comes to wins for.

Speaker 1 (29:02):
A football team when it comes to their overall global development.

Speaker 9 (29:05):
But the most important thing this year is you have
to figure out and learn about Bryce. And what I've learned.

Speaker 1 (29:10):
Again is that the same exsistencies we've talked about for
the first two plus years of his career are still
kind of rearing their ugly heads.

Speaker 9 (29:18):
And until those things.

Speaker 1 (29:19):
Get tamped down, it's hard to have a load of
confidence for him.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
Will Palachi, voice of Charlotte FC, WFNZ host reporter, hanging
out with us here on a Wednesday. All Right, Charlotte
F let's talk about a team that has a future
in the postseason. We know that, and we're all trying
to get excited for what's ahead. But first got to
finish up the season with Philadelphia. And I heard you
earlier this week telling the fans, hey, guys, I know
it wasn't great, but let's all remember they did actually

(29:43):
win this past weekend against DC United, So how do
we feel about what they just did? And of course
looking ahead to the end of the regular season.

Speaker 9 (29:51):
Well, listen, on its surface, when you.

Speaker 1 (29:52):
Have an eleven v nine scenario, would you have wanted
to be up more than that?

Speaker 8 (29:58):
Absolutely?

Speaker 9 (29:59):
Positively yes.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
I feel like if this game would had taken place
in you know, June or July, you know, in the
middle part of the season, when you probably felt like
you could throw more, you know than the kitchen sink
at the game, I feel like if Charlotte Vee had
that position, you maybe see a different kind of score line.
It's hard also to remember that they were down three
of their significant midfield players or two certificant midfield players

(30:22):
and then three if you count pet bl and also
the most accomplished defenders, So I think there was a
bit of a reticence to try to take too many
chances when you were already up one nail after that
second red card was hit. So I think the most
important thing was get the result. If everything else kind
of comes out the wash on the way through, and
then end up, you know, getting back home. You get
that result, and then you're gonna be home for a

(30:43):
decision day. With those three players back, We'll see what
happens with pet Biel. I know that the news from
him on Instagram earlier this week wasn't great, But I
think again, Charlotte has gotten very far used to playing
with this very solid midfield, the Brant Bronico to bril
Gianni and Ashley Westwood. I think the front three are
playing great. Zaha playing out of his mind right now,
and I think that's a side that I don't think

(31:04):
anybody wants to see in the playoffs. And if you
get this result on Saturday, if you beat if you
beat Philadelphia, then you're guaranteed home. Did the Vators in
the opening round of the playoffs, and as we saw
last year, there can be a lot of topsy turvy
things that happened in this opening round.

Speaker 9 (31:19):
With the best of free.

Speaker 1 (31:20):
Format, the way that it worked out, Kyle, if Charlotte
would have gotten past Orlando, they would have hosted the
rest of the Eastern Conference postseason. If they had gotten
past Orlando, they would have hosted in the conference semi
finals against Atlanta. They would have had a conference final
home game against the eventual team that.

Speaker 9 (31:37):
Got on on the other side of the back at
New York Red Bulls.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
They wouldn't have hosted the final, but the Eastern Conference
playoffs could have conceivably gone through Charlotte being only in
fifth place.

Speaker 9 (31:47):
So if you get the fourth that's just.

Speaker 1 (31:48):
Another opportunity to get more potential home games in your building.

Speaker 9 (31:51):
And as we know, Charlotte of C has done very.

Speaker 8 (31:54):
Very well at home.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
The club record twelve victories and a too short of
a MLS record for most homeies in a season.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Just to elaborate on that, we all know that getting
home playoff games is big, right. It's good for the fans,
everybody likes to see it, but there's also a massive
financial windfall that really, you know, it accelerates overall organizational progress, right, Kyle, And.

Speaker 1 (32:15):
I know people have kind of looked at at what
they want in terms of the kind of waiting and seeing.
When it comes to playoffs, I will say this this tea,
this town has started for a winner. And I think
when you start to see that kind of bubbling up
and build, people are gonna want to see that atmosphere.
I think about that playoff atmosphere we had last year
when Charlotte played against Atlanta for a one contest. It

(32:35):
was a live building, it was a live atmosphere. I
remember the thundering bolt when Christian Kalina made the last
stave on on Duncan Maguire, when he basically saved that
penalty to win things for Charlotte. It's it's very much
a thing where I think the entire city can get
behind it. It's gonna want It's gonna be something that
everybody wants to go and see. And again once that

(32:56):
schedule comes out, I feel like people are going to
be like, Okay, now I know to day when's the game,
and we will figure out our way to get there.
And again we won't know those things till after charlottevs.
He plays, but it is going to be something that
I feel like can have almost a mind of its
own and an animal of its own. When you see
that the way that it is. Home road splits in

(33:18):
this league are so so massive, and when you get
a home atmosphere in the playoffs, this doesn't like it.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
Oh Man, all right, So you're in the Golden rolling
Hills of southern Indiana right now? What do you do?
When I know you're up there to see the family
and the in laws? Like, what do you do?

Speaker 8 (33:31):
Do you?

Speaker 6 (33:31):
How do you keep?

Speaker 2 (33:32):
You go to Indianapolis? Do you have a favorite food haunt?

Speaker 3 (33:35):
What do you do?

Speaker 1 (33:36):
We are actually right now driving through Bloomington. We're my
wife's long Water University of Indiana University. We're actually going
to check out kurtzt and Natty's Coaches show tonight because
we had a free afternoon.

Speaker 9 (33:48):
We had some people with some plans.

Speaker 3 (33:49):
Earlier on that kind of I.

Speaker 1 (33:51):
Would say duck dust a little bit, but we're now
just said you know.

Speaker 9 (33:55):
What, you know, if you want to hang at us,
We're going to go down.

Speaker 1 (33:57):
To Bloomington and restock my wife's ban gear closet and
have some wings with Kurz Signetti.

Speaker 9 (34:03):
How about that?

Speaker 2 (34:04):
That's pretty awesome. Tell him, you know, Blacksburg's nice this
time of year. I'd appreciate it if you did that, buddy.

Speaker 8 (34:08):
All Right.

Speaker 1 (34:09):
I don't know if I'll see his agent there, but.

Speaker 9 (34:13):
I'll let you.

Speaker 1 (34:14):
I'll let him know that you have some buyout dollars
that might fit him as well.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
All Right, brother, have fun, be safe. We'll see when
you get back.

Speaker 8 (34:20):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Palo will Polachiic voice of Charlotte FFC wfn Z host
reporter with us on the hotline for a Thursday conversation
Real quick as it relates to to Belichick. Tfb's pointing
out that Pat Welter of w R A L, who
had the initial report two nights ago of all the
dysfunctioned and chaos inside the Carolina football program, is now
reporting that the reports yesterday that Carolina decision makers met

(34:44):
to discuss an exit strategy and that Bill Belichick could
be triggering his own buyout. He's saying it's all false
and that internally they're working across the board to improve.
I mean, that's comical. Well, yeah, and we have to
remember that wasn't his reporting. For yes, it wasn't his.
But that's my point is that it wasn't his reporting.
And I got to be real with you, I got
nothing against Pat Welter. I don't know the guy from Adam. Okay,

(35:06):
he's been at wral and Raleigh for a couple of years,
but for the decade plus prior to that, he was
in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He was in Orlando. He's from Londonderry,
New Hampshire, London.

Speaker 8 (35:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
Like, I'll take the word of Ollie Conley, who broke
the Belichick hiring story a year ago correctly. And Andrew
Jones has been covering Carolina in depth for ten years.
I got plus t more than that. Actually, Like, I
don't know what that is a very weird report that
he's put out there.

Speaker 3 (35:36):
Do you think he got pressured into doing that report
so he can keep.

Speaker 6 (35:38):
Sing I can't speak to what happened.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
I'm not going to accuse him of anything, but you know,
forty two minutes ago and this one's not picking up
hardly any traction, not relative to the others. But he's
saying that speaking to multiple sources today, reports that you
wouldn't see decision makers discussed an exit strategy regarding Bill
Belichick or false same with Belichick triggering his own buyout. Internally,
they are working to improve across the board, so he's
trying to contradict two guys who have a much lengthier

(36:04):
history of reporting on Carolina Athletics and have broken much
bigger stories than It's a very strange thing like that,
just reads that someone at the athletics department called and said, no,
it's not true, and he reported it.

Speaker 3 (36:14):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (36:15):
I'm not there, I don't know, but it's a very
strange thing to go from two nights ago, I believe
it was two nights ago, three nights ago, to releasing
or revealing his own reporting, right this inside look and
dysfunction and chaos and this that, and he look how
bad it is. Everybody hates Mike Lombardi, Bill Belichick's and
Jerk preferential treatment for players, and so now he's coming
out and say, well, actually no, none of this is true.
Everything's fine. They're just trying to get better. You see

(36:37):
the weird contradiction in that.

Speaker 3 (36:39):
Right.

Speaker 2 (36:39):
Yeah, I'll let people draw their own conclusions, but it's
very odd timing. Let's go to smoke on the headlines.

Speaker 4 (36:50):
All right, Well, you can draw your conclusions to this,
but I think it doesn't sound too good for Sunday
Taylor Moten, According to Joe Person says he injured his
elbow against the Dolphins last week. He said, according to Joe,
he's uncertain whether he'll be able to go against the
Cowboys on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (37:05):
Remember Taylor's been out both days.

Speaker 4 (37:06):
Yesterday thought it was just rest day, but they did
list elbow as reason he did not participate.

Speaker 3 (37:13):
If you can't go, yeah, Sneigeman at right tackle.

Speaker 6 (37:17):
Let's do it.

Speaker 3 (37:20):
Really, we just have.

Speaker 2 (37:22):
I realized this football guys get hurt, but for a week,
can we just not please?

Speaker 4 (37:27):
It's basically soul for a soul. You're gonna get this
guy back, You're gonna lose this guy.

Speaker 3 (37:31):
Feels like.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
I don't want to pump anybody up artificially or for
no reason, but we all know how good it would
feel to come in here on Monday three and three
having just beaten the Cowboys.

Speaker 4 (37:38):
Oh my god, and plus that that would make lose
your radio all time epic.

Speaker 6 (37:41):
Well it would it would.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
Last time we talked like this, we talked about Boston
fans and it didn't work out in our favor. So
I'm not going to count chickens or get too fired
up about it, but just the feeling around here, potentially
being five hundred for the first time since what twenty
twenty one.

Speaker 3 (37:55):
Yeah, that Cam Newton return here.

Speaker 2 (37:56):
Yeah, after they beat Arizona, they were five hundred. That's
the last time this team was five hundred in a season.

Speaker 4 (38:03):
Yeah, so that would be very unfortunate. It seems like
it could be a game time decision on that front.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
We'll learn more tomorrow. But in other news, Kyle.

Speaker 6 (38:13):
Yankees lose.

Speaker 3 (38:15):
That's correct, Big Poppy.

Speaker 4 (38:16):
The Yankees lost to to Blue Jays five to two
on the back of antther great performance by the blue
Jays bullpen and Vladimir Guerrero Junior has been one of
the early stars of the postseason. And yet again, the
Yankees are back under couches in early October. Before you
say anything, Yankees about the Red Sox, you're right back
here with us. And that's the biggest moment you've had

(38:37):
against the Red Sox in the last twenty years.

Speaker 6 (38:39):
All Right, we'll come back. We'll tell you who balled out.

Speaker 2 (38:41):
I want to talk about what Greg Olsen said to
Mack and Bone this morning about the Panthers. He's got
the call of the game on Sunday on Fox with
Adam Amein will play a bit of it. Next Sports
Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z.

Speaker 7 (39:01):
Get on your feet, Hello, good protection charges for the year?

Speaker 6 (39:08):
Sign Can you get to the buck?

Speaker 3 (39:13):
He's gotta go coming cant back to bush, running into
the area. It'll pass toward.

Speaker 8 (39:21):
Uprights for pet.

Speaker 6 (39:34):
It's time for who balled Out?

Speaker 2 (39:35):
Powered by High Performance real Estate Advisors and the biggest
dad gumballer of them all, Thomas L.

Speaker 3 (39:40):
Rod.

Speaker 2 (39:40):
Go to high Performance real Estate dot Com and they'll
see you at the closing table.

Speaker 6 (39:43):
Smoke would you bring for the people?

Speaker 4 (39:45):
Gotta go with Kyle Schwarburn not one but two swore
bombs as the Philly staved off elimination for at least
twenty four more hours.

Speaker 3 (39:52):
The force of Game three in La.

Speaker 6 (39:56):
That happened.

Speaker 2 (39:57):
I just forgot last night, or I had forgotten, and
then he discovered that I had like an extra fifty
bucks laying around on a gambling app and so I
was like, hey, let me just throw this money on
this playoff game here, and I immediately lost it. And yeah,
I'm back to not betting for a while. So I'm
gonna go. Eric Spolstra, who will apparently now succeed Steve
Kerr as the head coach of the USA basketball men's

(40:19):
national team, per reports earlier today, Spolstra will be named
the new head coach, according to Sham Sharania, in an
expected move, as he served as the lead assistant on
Steve Kerrs staff during the twenty twenty four Olympics. Spolster's
track record as the coach of the Miami Heat does
speak for itself.

Speaker 6 (40:37):
I know Smoke hates them, but you have to.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
I mean, he has the respect of top NBA stars
that would be playing for him in LA in twenty
twenty eight. USA basketball has put an emphasis on continuity
and culture ever since that loss back in two thousand
and four, bringing in coach k and tasking him with
building a foundation that was built upon by Greg Popovich
and then Steve Kerr to win five consecutive Olympic gold medals,

(41:02):
and now Eric Spolstra will be tasked with doing the
same and continuing that run of success. And what is
both a highly coveted position and one that comes with
very high expectations. Eric Spolstra the new coach of Team USA.

Speaker 4 (41:16):
They got to say, if you get it, I feel
like he's the perfect fit for Team EOSA and trying
to combine all the talented skill sets to put.

Speaker 3 (41:22):
Him into one team.

Speaker 4 (41:23):
It's funny looking back on it, but fifteen years ago
when he was the head coach of the Heat. Early on,
you know, everyone thought he was just a puppet that
just had to basically just suit up and stand there
on the sidelines and just watch the Big three play.
But as the years have gone on, it's been proof. Oh,
he's actually one of the best coaches in the game

(41:44):
of basketball, no matter what level you're playing at. So
I think this is a genius move and the beiyano
so few. It comes at the perfect time too, because,
let's face it, Steve Kerr and Greg Popovich they were
kind of teetering. It was a little scary there for
a little bit. They were having some clothes calls, and
with the world getting better at basketball across the board,
I think you need to have someone like Eric's bolster

(42:05):
there at heading the table for the US.

Speaker 1 (42:08):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
I think it's a good move. It's the right move
and one that was expected. But like you said, even
if you hate the Miami Heat, he's earned the respective
I think just about every basketball fan because he went
from being the perceived puppet and due boy of Lebron James,
Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade and pat Riley in the
beginning because he was a former video guy to over
the years becoming one of the most respected coaches in.

Speaker 6 (42:29):
All of basketball. So good for him. Congratulations to him.

Speaker 3 (42:32):
Now.

Speaker 2 (42:32):
Panthers Cowboys Sunday, Greg Olsen Adam Amin on the call.
Greg Olsen joined back in Bone this morning. Adam Amean
expected to join us tomorrow afternoon. Here's Greg Olsen this
morning on what he's like the things that he's liked,
saying he's really liked what he's seen, specifically from the
Panthers offense.

Speaker 10 (42:49):
I'll tell you I actually called Luke yesterday and I
was like, man, I'll tell you what I really like
what the Panthers are doing on offense. Like I think
the design, the play design of Canalis.

Speaker 5 (42:59):
I thought outside, you know, the interception he sailed to.

Speaker 8 (43:02):
The get he just kind.

Speaker 10 (43:04):
Of got up in the guards kind of face. He
kind of gave him up on the guard's back and
kind of sailed it over his helmet. Just a bad
throw that Bryce missed on. And then the fumble was
kind of a fluke ball just kind of fell out
of his hand. Other than that, I thought Bryce made
some of the best plays that I've.

Speaker 8 (43:19):
Seen him make since he's been here.

Speaker 10 (43:22):
I mean, some of those corner throws with anticipation with
guys in his face, the scramble to the right that
he threw to McMillan, that he that he took a
big shot, like some of the touchdown they leaguet I
thought was a big time ball. Like I liked the
run game. I thought, doubt Well obviously ran great, he
ran physical. I think the offensive line's pretty good. I
didn't know how they were going to handle losing Hunt

(43:42):
earlier in the year, and it feels like they've really
just kind of kept unplugin.

Speaker 3 (43:46):
So I really like.

Speaker 5 (43:47):
A lot of what they're doing offensively.

Speaker 2 (43:50):
All Right, So I thought I thought Greg of course
was great this morning. He's always great on the air,
but very complimentary of Bryce. That that state, when you
listen to that smoke, it stands I think in like
diametric opposition of much of what people tell us on
the text line about the way that Bryce has played
in their eyes. You know, Greg's saying the fumble was

(44:11):
a fluke. You know, of course, nobody likes turnovers I
hate him. I can't the fumbles, I can't stand them.
But like there's Greg saying as a fluke thing, you know,
interceptions happened, he got up into the guards, his feet
weren't said, he wasn't really on a great platform to throw.
We sailed the ball, YadA YadA. But he made some
of the best throws that I've seen him make since
he's been in Carolina. He also continued on where Bryce

(44:31):
has grown the most from last year.

Speaker 10 (44:34):
You know, they kind of have these all these analytics
phrases that they kind of throw out there, and we
get all these reports and they call it like big
time throw percentage.

Speaker 5 (44:42):
It's like a it's like a weird calculation.

Speaker 10 (44:44):
I'm not exactly even sure how they do it.

Speaker 5 (44:46):
But having said that, I think when he's had to make.

Speaker 10 (44:49):
Some big time throws, I mean, you just look at
last week's games. His ability to throw off the run,
his ability to throw when he's taken hits, unblocked guys
in his face, and he's getting the ball out with anticipation,
putting the ball like, I just think he's a lot
more comfortable playing the style of ball that made him
who he was at Alabama. Which was a little bit
of freestyle, a little bit on the run, also be

(45:11):
able to play on time. But every play has its
own story, and he just looks a little bit more decisive.
He looks a little bit more in control of what
they're doing. I think, Dave, I think Canalys deserves a
lot of credit for that. I think the offense he's
building has continued.

Speaker 5 (45:25):
To really benefit Bryce as.

Speaker 10 (45:27):
Far as playing to his strengths and kind of protecting
him from his weaknesses. So I've seen a lot of
growth in Bryce. I think the inconsistencies week in, week out,
drive and drive out are probably not unique to Bryce.
That's probably the number one issue with the entire team.
It's just hard to be up and down in the
NFL and expect to have consistent and have consistent results.
So they obviously are working at that. They're trying to

(45:48):
figure out what is it that makes them look so
good and then at other times look so bad. If
they can even out those ups and downs, I think they.

Speaker 5 (45:57):
Can continue to improve as the year goes on.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
Greg with I think a very optimistic view right there
of the way Bryce is played this year. I would
love to know what you think about it. We have
more to play on the other side, and we'll talk
about it five o'clock hour coming up. Sports Radio ninety
