Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet. Today Sports Radio ninety
(00:30):
two seven WFNZ. It's twenty four to seven, NC State
leading Memphis in the Gasparilla Ball right now down in
Tampa inside of two minutes to play in the first half,
and again n C State up by seventeen right now,
the wolf Pack cruising. Of course, Memphis had a coaching
change at the end of their season, head coach Ryan
(00:51):
Silverfield the latest Memphis Tiger head coach to move on
to the P four, taking the Arkansas job, and so
they've got an interim head coach in place, but Charles
Huff will be the Memphis head coach moving forward. That's
a good job in the G five and we'll of
course have a conversation I believe about the G five
here in a minute with Nick Saban's comments coming up.
(01:11):
But Memphis one of those good jobs where coaches just
keep passing through, justin Fwinte, Mike Norvel, Ryan Silverfield the
most recent, but now Charles Houff, who was at Marshall
then Southern miss now on to Memphis right now, twenty
four to seven, though NC State with a sizable lead
in this one. No send Mohammad Panthers legend coming up
(01:32):
in twenty one minutes. We'll get his thoughts on seven
and seven. Three to go Buccaneers in town on Sunday.
Stick around for Moose and then at five twenty five,
Chip Patterson is back late in the show today. It
is college football playoff time. After all, He's got television
duties early today and so Chip will join us at
five twenty five. We'll talk about Alabama Oklahoma. We'll talk
(01:52):
about the three other games tomorrow to Lane Ole, Miss Jmu, Oregon, Miami,
Texas A and M. What's your gut feeling on that
Miami A and M game? You you know Mike Elko
pretty well, I said earlier in the week, I'm taking
Miami in this game. I think they're gonna win this
game in the trenches tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
I kind of I think so too, And I think,
you know what kind of has me nervous is Texas
A and M's ability whenever they have a season like this,
to flounder late, and that they did that last year
under Mike Elko. They started the year believe six and
zero or six and one. They lost to Notre Dame yep,
(02:30):
and then they had that game against South Carolina where
Marcel Reach is evaporated and they were never the same
after that, they're definitely better. It's just I don't know, man,
something feels off about them. Whets the year before the
year where they truly contend. I can't bite him yet
because I just feel like this Miami team's better, especially
(02:51):
into trenches with a guy like rubyen Bain Junior, and
you know Carson Beck has been playing better. So I
just feel like, you know, Miami's gonna get the apprehend but.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
It's in. It's in at Texas A and m SO
at Kyle Field.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
So that's what makes me kind of also feel too,
like man, in the playoff game that we've never really
seen these atmospheres get tested like this before and last year,
if I'm not mistaken, all the home teams won and
the opening round playoff games because you had No Name
defeating Indiana.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah, you had.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Oh Penn State blowing out SMU, and then you had
Texas defeating Clemson. Sure, and as it relates to State
defeating Tennessee as it relates to A and M Correct
me if I'm wrong. I mean, I know that they were.
They've been accused of not playing the toughest schedule. Of course,
I think they had UTSA and Utah State out of
conference this year. Yes, they managed to avoid Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee,
(03:46):
and there's one more that I'm thinking of. But I mean,
there have been allegations what's that Vandy. Yeah that's true,
which still sounds weird to say or argue out loud.
But it feels like we should get laughed at for
even mentioning them.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
But yeah, it.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Does, it does, all right. Seven oh four five, seven
ninety six ten. Hit us up on the FanDuel text
line your thoughts on college football playoff weekend action coming up,
and of course Monday Headlines today, which can include the
college football playoff, but specifically Panthers and Bucks on Sunday.
Keep sending in your Monday headlines today, real quick, Panthers
PSL sucker says my god, KB. They just showed the
(04:22):
stadium on ESPN. It looks like there are twelve people
at the Gasparilla Bowl. Can you please explain the economics
of bowls? I don't have enough time for that. I
have talked to many Bowl executives over the years. Just
like many things in life, the world's different and both
season's dead and I don't take any joy in proclaiming that,
(04:46):
But bol season as you knew it growing up, as
I knew it growing up, are dead, or it's dead,
it's not what it used to be. Players are opting out.
First of all, many of these Bowl games have had
a really difficult time maintaining title sponsors over the years
as the Bowl games have lost relevance, And as we
talked about with Anis Shroth yesterday, who's on the call
for this game right now? I believe personally that the
(05:08):
focus at the end of the year should be on
the playoff. And if you're going to save these bowl
games and keep them relevant, certainly I think in my
mind at this point, make them more relevant moving forward.
Putting them at the beginning of the beginning of the
season as a reward for a strong year the last
year might be the best way to go. If in
week zero, week one, you move a handful of these
bowl games, the more prominent ones, to the big non
(05:31):
conference neutral site events that we see in places like Charlotte,
like Atlanta, like Chicago, like Indianapolis. If we can do
more of that, I think it does benefit the game.
You can still do the swag bags, you could, I mean,
really build up the beginning of the college football season
that way. I understand people who say they don't like
it because they like the way that it is and
(05:52):
they've always loved ball season, and I too, have always
looked forward to being able to sit down and watch
a random ball game on a Thursday during the Christmas holiday.
But the world's different now. We're talking about twelve team
playoffs soon to be sixteen team playoff if the Big
Ten has its way at twenty fourteen.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Playoff transfer Portal.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Yeah, like the focus should be on the playoff at
this stage of the year and of the season. So
I understand nostalgia, I get the changes and always fun.
I'm not saying that we have it one hundred percent right,
but just given the current conditions, would I be opposed
to moving the ball games to the beginning of the
college football season. I would not be opposed to that.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
They didn't see that many opt outs in the Xbox
ball game last night, did you. It's true because they
all got xboxes.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
It's true, that's true.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Way pretty bad ass to have the bastard chief flipping
the coin last night in that game.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Absolutely. No, Look, there's still cool things about ball games,
but you can do them in early September.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
I'm glad you know who the master chief actually is.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Oh kind of, Let's go to smoke with the best
audio in sports. What did you say?
Speaker 3 (06:48):
You what? What did you say?
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Hold up, wait.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
A minute, send me right.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
What I mean by that is.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
All right, smoky? What you got?
Speaker 5 (06:58):
All right?
Speaker 2 (06:58):
By the way, dear in that Holt solilically, NC State
scored again, are out forty one to seven.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Hey, real quick, I just want to address this, kay Town,
Steve said, But then you're you're basically giving a team
a bowl game the following year after a bunch of
the good players left. Who actually got them into the
ball game. I don't know about the beginning of a season, man,
but it made me think, Yeah, but you're also, these
big brands often get neutral site games with no guarantee
they're going to be good anyway. Like, there are all
sorts of teams that get put in these non conference
(07:24):
games at the beginning of the year and they're big brands,
and so they have big followings and fan bases that
will travel, but they turn out to be four and
eight football teams or five and seven football teams. Florida
State's done that in multiple times. So my Hokies have
done that in multiple times over the years. So I
understand what you're saying, but there's no guarantee on the
other end either. All right, smoke what you got.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
All right, Well, we start with the comment that's been
garnering a lot of controversy that comes from Nick saban As.
He was very upfront and honest when talking about James
Madison being in the playoffs yesterday over teams like Notre Dame,
Texas and Vanderbilt on the Pat McAfee show.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
Look, would we allow the winner of the trip away
Baseball League, the International League whatever they call it. I
don't even know the name of it. Would you let
them in the World Series playoffs?
Speaker 1 (08:20):
I don't think they do.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
No, No, I don't think no, they don't.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
But I'm saying, but that's the equivalent of what we
do when JMU gets in to the college football playoff
and Notre Dame doesn't.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
I mean, what's happening there. It's kind of buffering a
little bit. Are we playing it off the internet?
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:44):
I tried to make sure I found them because earlier
this morning they played that, but they forgot to take
out the expletive Okay, so I wanted to make sure
we didn't get the expletive part.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Would you watch a G five national championship tournament? No,
let's let's be honest about that. And I'm just asking
people because I do have individuals who tell me, well,
the Group of five should just do their own thing.
The G five should have their own tournament, their own championship.
They don't belong with the big boys. Chris and hudters
Will just said serious, get off my lawn vibes, no
(09:17):
doubt about it. So on the one hand, I am
all about teams having a chance and settling it on
the field. I don't think first of all, we don't
have to wonder if app State can knock off Michigan.
We've seen it happen, right, We've seen that. We don't
have to wonder if that can happen. We've seen that happen,
So it is possible. I have to wonder if tomorrow
(09:40):
Tulane or JMU, maybe not even win the game. Maybe
JMU and Oregon go to overtime. Maybe Tulane and Old
Miss go to overtime. Maybe Ole Miss beats Tulane at
home in the playoff on a walk off field goal,
you know, thirty to twenty eight or something along those lines.
Do these guys change their tone or will they dig
(10:02):
their heels in and double down on these stances, because.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
They might double down just because they're fighting for the
almighty dollar and they don't want these little kids to
get in and get to ruin the big team's dreams
of all that stuff.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
At this point, for me, it's just I'm tired of
complaining or tired of debating it. Either do it or
shut up about it. Either force them to start their
own tournament, tell them you're not going to accept them
or welcome them into this championship anymore, or just shut
up about it. We wouldn't be griping, I believe to
this extent, and this includes Nick Saban if there were
only one team in the playoff, if it was only
(10:36):
JMU or only to Lane, we wouldn't be talking about this.
But because there are two of them, because Notre Dame
a big brand got left out. This conversation is more
prominent than it would have been otherwise.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
And the acc went full ACC And.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
I will it will grow louder if those two teams,
JMU and Tulane get blown out tomorrow. But what if
they don't. What if those two teams, who are I
believe seventeen and a half and twenty one and a
half point underdogs, respectively. What if there's an upset, What
if it's a field goal game? What if both are
highly competitive? Then what are those guys saying about this?
After the fact? I had Tim Pernetti, the American Conference Commissioner,
(11:10):
on the show last Friday. He made his own great
point about it. I mean he just kept asking, what
are you afraid of? What are you afraid of?
Speaker 2 (11:17):
That's what I'm saying too, is like, if this is
so easy, why are you guys afraid keep on just
basically complaining about it and acting like you're afraid not
up beat them?
Speaker 3 (11:29):
That simple?
Speaker 1 (11:29):
I mean, can it not just be that this could
be one of those years that we get this? In
most years we won't. Yeah, I mean, first of all,
you're trying to fix this stuff behind the scenes already.
Notre Dame's getting its memorandum of understanding that you know
they're going to get special treatment. And these conferences now
want guaranteed automatic qualifiers for conference champions to avoid the
Duke scenario all over again. So I'm sure they're going
to keep tweaking it. But like I I, the G
(11:51):
five should do its own thing. Well, they don't want to,
and I don't think most of y'all would watch it,
So I can't blame them for not wanting to, because
I think they know most of y'all wouldn't watch it.
So tomorrow's results, I think will help shape this conversation
one way or the other in a pretty strong way.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
What else you got, all right, Well, speaking to a
group of five, do you want to talk about one
of the coaches that will be coaching in tomorrow's playoffs?
And that is John summerl of Two Lane and Florida.
He's technically coaching for both right now, but unlike Lane,
Kiffani's handled this situation about as well as you can,
including donating a hefty amount of money into Two Lane's
(12:30):
inil fund for when he leaves.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
And he was asked, why are you doing this?
Speaker 2 (12:35):
You know you've already done enough making this team go
to the playoffs, you're coaching in the playoffs, and still
you're donating to the team's in ail fund.
Speaker 6 (12:44):
Like this is home in a lot of ways.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
My two oldest kids were born here, so.
Speaker 6 (12:49):
You know, and I've talked a lot about when you
leave a place that matters how you leave it just
as much as how you enter. I want to leave
on good terms, and I want to be able to
come back in twenty years and celebrate this, this team
that's won a championship already together, and not be like, oh,
the way he walked out the building was kind of questionable.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
I want them to go many dinner the right way.
Speaker 6 (13:07):
And so I want to see Tulane get better after
I leave. I want to see it continue to grow
after I leave, or my family leaves. I don't want
to I'm not I'm hoping for more. I don't want
this to be the end of any They want to
to continue to build upon this.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
That was really cool. I like that answer a lot.
I think it speaks to who John Sumrall is. And
I realized these guys make really big money, but one
hundred thousand dollars a lot of money, and you know
he broke that off and donated that to Tulane on
his way out the door. I thought that was really cool. Also,
condolences to the summer all family is John Sumral, I
think earlier this afternoon announced that his father had passed away.
(13:47):
So you know, his dad is not even going to
be able to see him coach in the playoff tomorrow,
nor watch him coach at Florida. Of course he you know,
thankfully got to see his son make the college football
playoff and take the Florida job. But our condolences to
this over all families. John's father passed away earlier today.
What else you got?
Speaker 5 (14:03):
All right?
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Moving to d NFL in the Carolina Panthers, brad Izick
joined the media yesterday and among the things that he
was asked, he was asked about teddor Worm McMillan, and
the last two games have been very quiet for him.
He had the one touchdown game against the the Rams
and didn't do that much against the Saints, even though
the league admitted they messed up on the call that
(14:24):
they said was incomplete when it was actually catch. But
brad Isaac was talking about how he can get teddor
Worm McMillan more involved moving forward after a couple of
quiet weeks, we.
Speaker 7 (14:34):
Just got to continue to put him in the best
spots h to execute and then, uh, you know, when
those those moments come up, when you know the look
is right, we you know.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
We gotta we got to cash in.
Speaker 7 (14:43):
So there's a couple of those ops that were just
near misses. But at the same time, as coaches, you know,
we put an onus on, Okay, what are the best
looks to get this guy involved, to get our best players,
whether it's t Mac, our running backs, you know, really Jalen,
all those guys, all of our our playmakers on the
off like, what are the best chances to get them
the ball early, to get them in a rhythm, and
(15:04):
then as the game progresses, continuing to find those opportunities.
We got to continue to do that as a coaching staff,
and then that dialogue's got to happen during the game
as things start to change a little bit.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
I mean his last three games, two catches thirty five
yards against the forty nine ers. Now there was a
touchdown passing there and it was a twenty nine yarder.
So outside of that twenty nine yarder against San Francisco.
He had one catch for six yards against the Rams
in a big win. Right, this went a little bit unnoticed,
a little bit because of the fact that they shocked
the league and beat the Rams that day. He had
(15:37):
one catch for forty three yards, which was also a touchdown.
Then against the Saints this past weekend, two catches for
twenty five yards. One of those was a twenty one yarder,
meaning he had one other catch for four yards and
that was it. He also had the overturn catch that
we've talked about this week. Prior to that, he had
seven for ninety nine against Buffalo. He had four for
forty six against the Packers. He had five for sixty
(15:58):
against the Saints and that loss. So you know, business
has really slowed down for Tetroo mcmill in the last
three weeks. He has one one hundred yard receiving game
on the season and that was way back in Week
two against the Cardinals, I believe, right, But forgetting one
by forgetting one.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
Yeah you are sure, Yes, I'm sure the Falcons game.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
How am I forgetting the Falcons game?
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Technically, he didn't have one against the Cardinals. He had
ninety nine.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Oh, you know what, they omitted that stat lineup. I'm
looking at it right now. They just omitted the Falcons game. Wow,
that's weird. You're right, that's crazy. But anyway, he's had
a lot of up and down, but the last three
games have been very slow for Tetroo McMillan. He's got
to have a guy he died. I'm not going to
say he goes for a buck fifty and two touchdowns
(16:46):
on Sunday, but I do get the feeling that Sunday
he breaks out a little more. I'm going to say
he goes for five catches eighty yards and a touchdown
on Sunday. That's what I'm five catches eighty yards and
I think he has to They're going to win this game.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Also want to end on this note here because usually
a good barometer see how this locker room is is
to ask.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Derek Brown a question.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
And earlier this week, Fast I Hurt in the Simple
Media asked Derrick Brown what his mindset is after that
disappointing loss to the Saints.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
You weren't very happy after the game on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
How long did it take you to kind of.
Speaker 8 (17:17):
Move on from that movie?
Speaker 5 (17:19):
I mean.
Speaker 8 (17:22):
I wouldn't say I'm passing now, but I'd definitely say
as fuel to the fire. I mean it's one of
that you know, we wipe past, got passed the Tuesday,
to be honest, and uh, you know very much looking
for it to get back out there again Sunday.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
What you say and ask fuel to the fire? What
do you mean by that? I'm a competitor. I don't
like to lose.
Speaker 8 (17:39):
Every time you lose don't make me feel very good.
So I go through, gotta go through the week, focus, lockdown,
and you know, I treat every week the same week,
whether we win and lose. But I mean, you know,
it's a little something special when you lose.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
To be honest, yeah, he's pissed and I with their
injuries and just general play in the interior of their
offensive line. As a niche said yesterday, Derek Brown's got
a big opportunity to go ham on Sunday against Tampa
and he's gonna have to That's what did you say?
The best audio in the world of sports. We'll talk
about this game when we come back. Panthers legend Mussen
(18:10):
Mohammad on the other side. Sports Radio ninety two to
seven WFNZ got a big one at the Bank on
(18:33):
Sunday one o'clock kick countdown to kick off three hours
before ten am at the WFNZ Doghouse powered by Jack Daniels,
right across the street from Bank of America Stadium. It's
always a party, but it's going to be a big,
big party on Sunday morning. Come tailgate with us ten
am to one pm. KB and MAC a tradition, just
like many others, three hours of Panthers pregame and we
(18:55):
always look forward to it. We hope to see you there.
And there's a chance that this next conversation might get
run back on Sunday because these conversations with Mssen Mohammad
are always good. Panthers legend and well just one of
the great wide receivers in franchise history. Hall of Honor
member and our friend, Mussenne Mohammad is back with us
for a Football Friday conversation ahead of the biggest game
(19:16):
of the season. Miss n Mhammad, how you been my friend?
What's going on?
Speaker 9 (19:19):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (19:20):
KB doing well? Well, it's been too long, you know,
yeah to be on the show with you.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
I tell people all the time that we love having
you on. But you're such a busy guy and you're
a high level titan of industry that I don't like
bothering you that much, but I appreciate it when you
do give us your time.
Speaker 5 (19:34):
You know, I'm addicted to football, It's in my blood,
so you know I never turned these down. Man, It's
always fun to talk a little shop.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
With I love that.
Speaker 5 (19:42):
Well.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
I was talking to Smoke during the break and he
pointed out, he said, you know, we got to talk
to Moose about you know, just how great it is
for this Panthers Bucks rivalry in particular to mean something again,
because well, the last time that this series meant that much,
Moose was still playing in a Panther's uniform. How great
is it to see Panthers Bucks coming down the stretch
decide think the NFC South.
Speaker 5 (20:01):
You know, it is amazing and a fitting story, right,
and I think you wouldn't want any other script. And uh,
you know, having two games against a divisional rival coming
down the stretch to decide the season. You know, if
you would have asked me to predict this at the
beginning of the year, I don't know if I could have.
But you know, it's like playing the powerball. You know,
(20:22):
you just great things happen and all of a sudden,
it's gonna be great for somebody at the end of
the day. But this is a this is amazing. I mean,
it's great for Panther fans, it is great for the organization,
it's great for the players, and it's great for the NFL.
It's great for football overall. And these are the kind
of rivalries and matchups that that you live to play in.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Do you recall and I'm sure I could go back
in pinpoint the season the time, but I'll just let
you take it. Do you recall being in the locker room,
being a part of a you know, a young Panthers team,
or even a I guess Chicago team, but Panthers in particular,
like this one right, young, kind of unsteady, getting your
footing good some sundays not so good other sundays. Just
(21:03):
being a part of a growing culture and a growing
locker room. What's that like week to week?
Speaker 5 (21:09):
You know, it's it is a little nerve wrecking, but
it's also gives you promise, It gives you hope and uh,
you know, for these young guys, uh to actually see
some of their hard works starting to come to fruition.
I know it has to be, you know, encouraging for them,
and in Canalis and Morgan and obviously Dave and Nicole,
(21:31):
and you know, you know, for the guys in that
locker room. The most nerve wrecking thing is like you
hear all these stories, you see these legends and guys
walking around, you know, and you question yourself. Right, you
know you're working hard and one day it'll pay off,
but you don't know when. And you don't know if
you're you know, if you fit in the NFL, if
(21:52):
you know what you did in college is applicable in
the NFL. And you know, do I belong? You know,
amongst the stars and amongst all these you know, great players,
and you know, game after game, you start the game
confidence and you start to get this momentum going and
you beat the LA Rams right, and you start winning
(22:12):
some of these games that against some you know, big
time of opponents like Green Bay, and you start to
see it say, you know what, we're just as good
as they are. You know, we belong here, and you
know eventually you turn the corner and you walk in
the games expecting to win. You walk in the games
expecting to dominate. And I think the Panthers, you know,
are starting with this season right, are starting to put
(22:33):
some building blocks and some pieces in place to where
they're going to start expecting to win going forward.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
One of those building blocks, of course, is Tedera McMillan.
And earlier in the year you were on we were
talking about these young guys and what you saw and
how you projected them as they began their careers. And
you know, Team Mac in particular has had some really
nice afternoons, but as of late, business has slowed down
a little bit. Last three weeks, He's had two catches,
one catch, two catches. There's a debate on the text
(23:00):
line as to why that is. Is it, you know,
the offensive scheme not working well enough to get him open?
Is it him? Is it you know, all the defensive
attention that he's getting. Why do you think things have
slowed down for him the last couple of weeks, and
what do you think about his progress overall?
Speaker 5 (23:14):
You know, I like T Mac. I've always been a fan,
and I think he's a tough, good young player. He's
got a lot of the right sort of building blocks
to be a really successful receiver at the next level.
And you know, the better you play. What happens is
people adjust, right and they go in just like any
halftime great teams that have halftime adjustments, all these teams
(23:36):
around the league are going to start to adjust to
what t. Mac has put on film and how well
he's been able to play this early in his career.
And so Team Mac success and his ability to now
adjust to the adjustments, right, it is the ultimate chess match.
Now he's going to have to come out and say, Okay,
well you're doing this to me, I'm going to counter
(23:57):
that with this, And so it builds his tool box, right,
It builds on the things that he's able to do
in the game to counter the counter and UH and
then and then becomes successful. So you know, there's always
these spurts and spans where you know you've been adjusted
to and now you've got to adjust to the adjustments.
And as long as you've got the mental fortitude and
(24:21):
the confidence to know that you're gonna be able to
compete and figure it out, I think he'll be able
to adjust. And you know, it also helps to have
a Jalen Coker and UH, and it helps to have
an Excel, uh, you know, as teammates because they could
take some of that stress off of you. And so
when he's not able to produce it because they've got
double teams that maybe triple teams, you know, the ball
(24:41):
can go to Cocer or they can go to Excel
and go to other players on the you know, good
running game can compliment that. And I think you know,
same can be said for you know, what's going on
in the backfield. You've got to have a couple of
good running backs. And so you know the Panthers, you know,
you're you're only as good as the weakest link and
and and if they can take away strength and you
don't have another player to go to, then it's going
(25:02):
to hurt you. But I think in the case of
that receiver locker room, I mean it's one of the
most talented locker rooms that the Panthers have had in
terms of the receiving corps. You know, they're going to
be able to compliment each other, and I think T
Max is just gonna be fine.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
We were talking a few days ago about the fact
that undeniably this team is better, the organization moving in
the right direction. They've gone from two to fifteen to
five and twelve to now seven and seven with three
games left to go. But we were trying to reconcile
the overall improvement with the fact that they're twenty eighth
in the league in points per game at eighteen point
nine points per game. You got an offensive minded head
(25:36):
coach points per game down from last year about one
point two points per game, and you know, the offense
has just really been up and down, inconsistent week to week.
You're not quite sure what you're gonna get. What do
you attribute that to? Like when I see seven and
seven better record in the playoff hunt, but twenty eighth
in the league in points per game, how do I
how do I square that?
Speaker 5 (25:57):
You know, I think the identity of the team has
been a little bit. You know, when you see like
ric O'dondo early in the game in the season, you know,
came out and really was playing well, and they were
able to just run the ball consistently and and and
really impose their will. You know, teams had juries, have
some other things, and so that's that's been tested a
(26:17):
little bit, right and and then you see, you know,
other players on the team, you know, every now and
then you see a tremble have a good game, right,
And I think for play callers, you know, knowing that
I've got a go to that's unstoppable is something that
is the luxury that everybody wish they had a Puka
Nuku or someone like that in their locker room that
(26:38):
you know you can just you know, dial up a
play and you know it can't be stopped. But you know,
what's happening with the Panthers is that they're getting better.
They're getting to a point where you know there are
multiple guys that can uh to answer that call on
on offense, right. And so defense has been has been
a strong suit. But every now and then our defense
(26:59):
has looked a little bit weak. Right, every now and then,
you know, you know, we put confidence in the defense
like last week, and and we couldn't get off the
field though maybe we had a penalty to put him
in a position to kick that game win the field goal.
And so you know, you got to stack these things
in the memory bank. And every week a young team
gets better if they learn from their mistakes and they
get better the next week, But it doesn't mean that
(27:21):
the next the following week there's going to be a
mistake that we didn't make in the previous weeks that
we've got to learn from that. And so you know,
with Canalis, you know he's a very academic guy. You
got Chiswick there who's you know, really good in teaching,
and you know, now it's all about just building that confidence,
right and understanding who's gonna be the you know, how
(27:42):
how do we formulate plays and we formulate strategies where
you know, teams can't stop if they take this away.
We can go over here and this guy, you know what, uh,
this guy, he's never been the player of the game.
He's never been a game ball guy. But this week,
you know what, we're gonna call the play and you're
going to have to be the start of the team
this week. And that's what the Panthers is going to
(28:03):
have to get to because everyone is going to have
to contribute on a team like this when you don't
have you know, a guy that is you know, a
freaking nature offense, right, but you got a bunch of
guys who can play. So you know, it really is
about gaining confidence collectively amongst every single one in that
locker room that says, you know what, I'm going to
have to be the guy this week that wins the
(28:24):
game for us and have the confidence in doing that.
And that's what they're learning. They're learning that we all
can contribute and we all have to, you know, you know,
be that guy that's not the weakest link on the
team and collectively if you're going to have a strong
team and you're going to compete and be in a
position to win some big games.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
So with that in mind that, you know, Bryce Young
has the one thing that I and many other people
wanted to see from Bryce this year is consistency. Unfortunately
that has evaded most of them throughout the course of
the year, up and down, win loss. But three of
the last four games he's played well to very well,
you know, Monday Night Football being the exception. But no
play great again the Falcons, great against the Rams. I
(29:01):
think it's very solid day against the Saints individually, even
if they lost the game. It's all going to be decided,
I'm sure, and the story will be written in full
over these next three weeks. But what have you seen
from the third year quarterback in his second season in
this system? Has Has it been enough? Do you need
to see more? What are your thoughts.
Speaker 5 (29:20):
Well, I'll tell you this, and I know that we
all want a consistent quarterback. But the pain of getting
there is what people don't have the patience for. And
I guarantee you if you look at, you know, the
Cleveland organization, they probably have second thoughts on being patient
with Baker Mayfield, right yep. And you look at the
Jets organization. How many good quarterbacks and the Giants you know,
(29:42):
you know, the quarterbacks that have come through those organizations,
and say, man, if we just had a little bit
more patience, we'd have a you know, a really good
quarterback on our hands. And look at Bryce, He's twenty
four years old. I mean, I don't think he's had
you know, full facial here yet. You know, so you
got you know, you got a guy who's young, and
it's got all these you know, really strong components to
(30:04):
be a great quarterback. And you know, if his confidence
builds a game after game, year after year, you know,
you could have a really special player on your hands.
And what does he have to do? It's a mental game.
It's not about physical for him. It is can I
withstand the pressures of standing in front of the media
(30:24):
every week if I didn't play well, and how do
I handle that? Because you know the NFL, I mean,
it is a very intense result oriented job. Like you
know immediately if you did well, if you had a
good game, if you didn't by the score, you know,
at the end of the game, and even if you
(30:45):
didn't play well, if you if you won the game,
then you actually did your job right, even though you
could feel horrible about it. And the flip of that too, right,
you could have a great game, throw for four or
five hundred yards and you lose the game and you're
still gonna be judged that way. So for Bright, I
think this is a mental exercise for him as much
as it is a physical exercise. And being tough in
(31:05):
the NFL, it's not just about being able to throw
a blow or knock somebody out or you know be
you know Luke Keikley and you know one of these
crazy linebackers. It's also a mental toughness game. And I
think right now, young guys are learning how to handle
the stresses and the pressures of playing in big games
on a consistent level. And that's what Bright to me,
that's where Bryce is going to excel is you know
(31:26):
that mental toughness and fortitude of how to you know,
take the ups and downs, the ebbs and flow and
state even kill because that's what's all you got to
eat and kill all the way through the whole process.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Love it. I love it. Hey, I've kept you long enough,
but I do want to sneak this in because I
know you listen from time to time when you can,
and you know how much I love college football. I
know how much you love college football. This has been
the craziest coaching carousel of my lifetime in college football.
It's been absolutely nuts. And your Michigan State Spartans, a
proud program, end up hiring Pat Fitzgerald. I love to
(31:58):
hire for you guys. How do you feel about it?
Speaker 5 (32:00):
Yeah, well I do too. I don't have enough, you know,
to kind of give you a real substance of comment
on it, but you know you're right. I mean, it's
been a coaching carousel here, and you know, names that
our legendary names are fading away from the game. You
got new up and coming you know coaches like you
know coaching Indiana. That's just like, who would have thought
(32:22):
that this guy would turn a program around the way
he did in the era of the transfer portal, right,
and so you know I like to hire. I don't
know enough to say I love it, but you know
he deserves a chance. For me, our spartans haven't been relevant,
you know, and quite some time. So you know, we
need to get back on the map here. Our basketball
program is doing just well, but you know we need
(32:45):
some We need some strong leadership here and we need
some up and coming starts. I mean, the landscape to
me is very fertile for guys who really know how
to you know, lead men right now because this is
a time and era where leading men is more important
than ever.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
Love always appreciate you. Love these conversations. Brother, We'll talk
to you soon. Happy holidays.
Speaker 5 (33:04):
So was good. Thanks Thanks having good KD. Happy holiday, bigum.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
Sin Mohammed Panthers Legend Hall of Honor member with us
here on a Friday, a football Friday, talking Panthers and
Bucks on Sunday. I love this point about Bryce and
the mental aspect. The mental toughness like that, to me
is the most impressive thing about Bryce is just how
like physically and mentally tough this kid is. He's not perfect,
(33:28):
but he gets up he's taking some nasty shots. He's
been through a ton of adversity. He got benched, his
first year in the league was a disaster. People left
him for dead, counted him out, wanted him traded, and
he has, I'll say it again, has not proven that
he is absolutely the locked franchise guy. Moving forward. The
next three games are going to start to determine that.
(33:50):
I'm fully expected to be the Week one starter next year.
Don't get me wrong, but he still has some things
to prove. But it's why I think people like Moose,
who clearly still believe in the kid do still believe
in him because he's got that aspect of him where
there's no there's just there's that never quit, never say
die attitude about Bryce Young. He keeps getting up after
the big hits, after the injuries, he comes back out
of the locker room. His teammates view him as a leader.
(34:11):
You can tell, even with all the things that gets
said about him outside the walls of that building, his
teammates love him and they'll follow him. And there's something
to be said for that.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
He's he's got that Steve Rogers vibe to him. That's
Captain America. Yeah, where he never said die, never give up.
He just get himself up, knock himself up, just kind
of dust off everything and go back to fighting.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
But at the end of the day, he still got
to produce and he's still got to win. But you
know that that right there is why people still believe
in him, why people want to root for him. Seven
four five, seven ninety six to ten. Hit us up
on the fan duel text line. Right now we go
to smoke on the headlines.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
All right, this is a neogenics college football injury report. Neogenics,
all you have to lose is the pain to have
the injury report for tonight's game between Alabama and Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Big news is that Dan Miller of.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
Alabama, running back who was out of the SEC title game,
looks like he's gonna be good to go. He's not
on the injury report and R Mason Thomas of Oklahoma
is not listed. He's gonna be ready to go. But
pretty bad news. Lt Overton is out tonight for Alabama.
Not good for them, nope. As well as running back,
they still are pretty finitt running back as Kevin Riley
(35:21):
is out of the game tonight. But then again, Kyle I.
Hope you have fun watching it. I'm not gonna watch it.
I'm taking a principal stand. What are you gonna watch?
Speaker 1 (35:31):
Instead?
Speaker 2 (35:33):
I could baby catch up on some stuff on Netflix
ORC and just watch a random game from two thousand
and two.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
All right, we'll come back. We'll tell you. We'll tell
you who balled out.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
I'm gonna tex Q video just to prove what I'm doing.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
Okay, all right, we got I'm losing my train of
thought here, Chip Patterson, cbssports dot com. He's back at
five twenty five. We'll talk about that game tonight and
a whole lot more. But when we come back, we'll
tell you who balled out. More on the Hornets to

Speaker 3 (36:22):
He's got good coming on him.
Speaker 2 (36:24):

would you bring for the people?
Speaker 2 (36:56):
I gotta go with lamellow ball twenty eight points, thirteen assists,
four rebounds. By the way, those twenty eight points eight
of eleven from behind the ark as the Hornets won
one forty three two one twenty six over the Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
Hawks twenty eight for con Kaninepple two. I mean, I
just throw that out there because they were so good
last night. But LaMelo was just box office last night.
If you didn't watch the game. I had a few
people say that, you know, they were glued to the
Hornets game last night for the first time in a while.
And that was a good night to be glued to
the Hornets because LaMelo went off, Conkinipple went off, Brandon
Miller went off, Miles had a good night. T John
(37:30):
Salon was good off the bench. So yeah, great night
to be glued to the Hornets. I was glued to that,
and then I was glued to Thursday night football. So
what was the game of the year? And I'm going
Seahawks and Rams because in a season where you know,
we've just again it's been a wild NFL season. We've
been all over the place, we got a thirty eight
to thirty seven Instant Classic on Thursday night, with Seattle
(37:52):
winning to take a twelve three record and take control
of the NFC West and the conference's top seed with
two games left to go meeting. By the way, Seattle
will come in here next week as the top team
of the NFC West and the top team in the NFC,
something we've seen recently with the Rams, but the Seahawks
opting for a two point conversion in overtime after driving
(38:13):
sixty five yards to score a touchdown bringing them within
a point of La. Seahawks offensive coordinator Clint Kubiak could
have dialed up a one on one situation with Jackson
Smith Jigba, who leads the NFL with over sixteen hundred yards,
could have had the game off or the ball off
to Kenneth Walker, who ran for one hundred yards on
the night, and instead, you know, staying in step with
(38:35):
the bizarre world that is this year, Clint Kubiak called
a short over the middle pass to Eric Saubert, a
tight end who was released earlier in the season but
returned recently and signed a one year extension in December.
Seahawks win he entered the night with just two catches
for twenty one yards on the season. In his nine
year career, which has seen him play for the Broncos, Falcons,
(38:55):
forty nine Ers, Texans, Jaguars, Bears, Cowboys, and Seahawks, he
has four hundred ten in total receiving yards. Technically, the
two he earned last night won't count toward his total.
But with all the things we saw last night throughout
the course of the year, a journeyman with no catches
on the night, Eric Salverert catching the biggest of his
career and the game winner for Seattle. Thursday night football
(39:16):
bawling out, and for much of the night it looked
like the Rams were gonna make a compelling statement as
the best team in football again. They picked off Sam
Darnold twice, forced a Cooper Cup fumble in the red zone.
LA racked up four sacks while totaling five hundred and
eighty one yards of offense, including four fifty seven through
the air from Matt Stafford two twenty five of that
(39:36):
going to Puka Nakua. But then that fourth quarter happened
and LA sixteen point lead evaporated, and before we knew it,
the Seahawks were celebrating a win in front of a
raucous home crowd last night. Just an incredible, incredible Thursday
night football game seven oh four five, seven ninety six
to ten. Hit us up on the fan duel text line.
(39:57):
We'll take some more of your phone calls. I'll sneak
in one right now, Corn, Cob, Craig's in laid on
a football Friday, Craig, what's going on?
Speaker 7 (40:05):
Hey?
Speaker 9 (40:05):
Happy football Friday? And you guys, hey the other A
couple of days back, you had that all long in
the tooth Tampa Bay Buck beat writer and he was
talking about his view of coach Canalis not being a
great play caller. And I guess, thirty one games into it,
I guess I would agree with him in terms of
(40:29):
just he seems to be real static and unchanging. But
I'm sure, and I think it does obviously come with experience.
But I'm sure hoping Game thirty two ends up with
some form of a just an unusual play. I think
I think Panthers win twenty seven to twenty three on
either a hooking ladder or a tight end reverse or something,
(40:51):
Hey the other thing just quickly, I guess It's just
weird how NFL scheduling. You know, the last several years
we've played Tampa Bay at Tampa Bay the last game
of the year. I know that's kind of getting the
cart before the horse, but I don't know why that
always sets up like that. And then the other thing
is is both Tampa Bay and Seattle are coming off
(41:12):
many buys when we get to play them, So I
don't know. Maybe given that much time with the many
by coaches have a tendency to outthink themselves. So hopefully
Tampa Bay does that. But hey, great weekend, and I'm
with you. I hope that stadium is just absolutely crazy
because it would sure help the cause.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Yeah, sure would. Thank you, Craig, appreciate the phone call,
my man. Hope Nebraska's treating you well. They're mad at
Matt Rule today out in Nebraska, Smoke just pointed out,
we don't have time to play the audio, nor do
nor do I want to maximize any more Matt Rule
exposure on these airwaves. Well, that guy's out there in
a press conference today defending the fact that the Nebraska
(41:54):
football turnaround is what it is and comparing it to Indiana, and.
Speaker 3 (41:59):
He said it this program has been dead for the
ten years.
Speaker 1 (42:02):
Oh yeah, said the program was dead for ten years
before he got there.
Speaker 3 (42:04):
Despite twenty sixteen, they won nine games.
Speaker 1 (42:09):
See well, you know, I guess it didn't happen as
fast as Indiana, So you know, people are upset about that.
But you know, Bill Belichick once told me it takes
three years to Uh. I don't know if you want
to be quitting Bill Belichick right.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
By the way, By the way, Tar Hills fans, you
gotta wait another year after this year because it took
Bill Belichick three years to get a coaching staff together,
or just want to let you know about that.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
It'll be Bill's seventy sixth year when things really take off,
is what you're.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
Said, exactly seventeen seventy six, just like our country, baby.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
I've I've continued to marvel at the number of TarHeels
fans this week, especially but the last couple of weeks
on the text line who've been like, get him out
of there, get rid of him. And I'm not saying
that they all feel that way, but there are a
number of TarHeels fans on the text line this week,
the last two weeks who have any time the conversation
has come up, and we haven't really even gotten into
any you know, direct or intentional conversations about the tar
(42:58):
Heels because we haven't really had to. But like Tarhels
fans on the text line, as we talk about coaching,
carousel stuff and who's going where and what NFL jobs
could come open, we'll just get these random texts. We
take belchick, take him off our hands. We don't want
him anymore. I mean, I don't know what percentage of
fans feel that way, but there are a lot on
the text line. Seven oh four, five, seven oh ninety
six ten hit us up on the FanDuel text line.
(43:20):
The third and final hour coming your way, and I
guess now I can. I can tell you that it's
been confirmed. For those of you who have been asking,
Dad is back in the final segment of the show.
Once a staple on this show for the better part
of the last year, let's say, you know, we've kind
of gotten away from it for a lot of reasons
that I won't get into. But today marks the triumphant
(43:42):
return of Randy on the radio show. We are calling
it the Friday five with Randy. My Dad joins us
in the final segment of the show, he's got four
picks and a big take of the week, the Friday
five with Randy one hour away, just less actually at
this point, and also Chip Patterson coming up in five
twenty five more to get to stick around. We'll take
your phone calls next as well. Sports Radio ninety two
