And Howard Number.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Three Sports Radio ninety two to seven w f n Z,
Queen City. We appreciate you, congratulations on being off work.
By the way, five o'clockers, welcome in. We had a
whole conversation about youth baseball there in the previous segment
for a couple of minutes. TC though says that Smoke
should run for the mayor of Lincolnton down the road.
He's right about that, you should, And I would really
(00:48):
like to be your press secretary, Like that's the only
job I want. I want you to run for mayor
and I want to be your press secretary. And I'm
under no illusion it will be a full time job.
You can pay me part time, doesn't matter. But I
want to handle the press conferences because I'm you're too
nice for that. But I want to be your press secretary.
That's the only job I want when you indevitably run
(01:09):
for mayor of Lincolnton. I don't want to be a politician,
So no, it doesn't matter what you want. Okay, the
people need you in Lincolnton, in Lincoln County to run
for mayor at some point. How quickly can we, like,
we need to look into you. Don't want to do this,
do you? We got to look into getting you on
the ballot at the very least. Dear God, I want
to look into this.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
I really do.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
We who out there thinks that we should at least
look into Smoke running for mayor of Lincolnton. I think
you'd win. I really do. I think you'd win. I'm
serious about this. We're going to look into it. I
bet our next guest agrees with that. He loves talking
to Smoke. Roman Harper two time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champion,
former Alabama Crimson Tide, New Orleans Saint and Carolina Panther.
(01:50):
These days an SEC Network analyst, and he's got the
NFL Legends Second Act podcast with FBI agent Peanut Tillman.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Our man.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Roman Harper stays busy and he's back with us here
on a Wednesday, which is, by the way, is where
he'll be throughout the football season here on the show.
Roman Harper, what's going on?
Speaker 1 (02:07):
What's up?
Speaker 5 (02:08):
Kyle? I'm actually in the Green and Regulation right now
up here in Alabama. I would also say I got
a correct you. But Peanut is no longer with the FBI.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Really, okay, I don't know everybody.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
I mean, I mean, you told everybody that he's an
FBI agent. Now you know he's a former former bro.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
You think you think I broke that news to people?
Speaker 3 (02:28):
There was like multiple massive Instagram accounts tweet posting about
it last week.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Did not see that?
Speaker 5 (02:35):
No? I didn't. Yeah, I'm glad he got out when
he did this. I don't think everybody supposed to know.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
You know, I've told I've told this story before though
we don't have to get into it. But the funny
thing is like I got a fraternity brother who's in
the FBI, and he went to like SWAT team boot
camp with Peanut Tillman and the FBI. And we got
to talking one day and he's like, I know Peanut,
and I'm like, Wow, what a small world. So anyway,
it is a small world, all right, So it's good
to have you back.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Brother.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
What are you doing in Alabama? You're squeezing out the
last drops of summer? What are you doing?
Speaker 5 (03:07):
Man? I'm MAXI I got a little speaking engagement I
got to do tonight. That's a little uh red Elfon
club and uh you know some alumni stuff. Man, they
like to you know, whenever they invite me, I'll try
and come up here and show out a little bit,
just talk a little ball and it's good man. You
know Alabama, you know we we love our own.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Ain't Oh no, he's breaking up? Roman, you're still with us?
Are you breaking up a little bit? Hopefully you're still
there with us, Roman Harper hanging out on the hot
line here, So like, do y'all start hear me?
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah, we got you, I got you. O.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
Okay, it's in the mountains too, so okay, sorry.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Oh no, the Alabama mountains are beautiful. I've driven through there.
They're beautiful. So I'm glad you said that. Do y'all
start every like, every official function and end every prayer.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
With roll tide?
Speaker 5 (03:49):
Like?
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Is that how everybody does it in Alabama?
Speaker 5 (03:52):
It's not that bad, But you know it's not a bad.
It depends on It depends on whose family you at too. Now,
some families a lot more deep than me.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
That was being on blessing the meal ending with a
roll tide what But in all seriousness, Lo, what is
the attitude in your neck of the woods about the
tide right now? After a nine and three season? You know,
all right, we're gonna put him on hold. We're gonna
try to get this phone line cleaned up. Roman Harper
(04:21):
with us on the hot line live from the hills
of Alabama. We're gonna try to get his phone line
cleaned up, and we'll talk a little sec and get
his thoughts on the NFC South, specifically the Saints, where
the reports are not great, especially about the quarterback situation.
We talked to Zach Jackson, who covers the Browns earlier
in the show. He thinks to Cleveland is hoping for
(04:42):
the number one overall pick next year. I think the
Saints front office probably feels the same way. We got
him back. We got Roman Harper back with us on
the phone lines, all right, So keep it going that
what's the attitude down there about Alabama going into the season.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
You know, number one college that last year is not
the standards. I think they understand that. You know, I
was just on campus recently and I love the attitude
of these players. I think coach Blue, the strimp head
strength coach has really stepped this game up and really
trying to steer this ship in the right direction. Kaylyn
de Bord, it just seems like everybody's more on the
same they You know, it's something to be said about
(05:15):
being all in but a little bit heavier. I think
that was last year's team.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Man.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
They lost those games that had nothing to do with talent.
They had all to do with finishing, coming in against
the ring, attitude, the right approach about going about their business.
I think going through those things last year, that's want
to be more ready to do more damage this year.
I'm really looking forward to the SEC's gonna be tough.
They got Alazam's got a heck of a schedule, you know,
road schedule and home schedule. But at the end of
(05:40):
the day, you're Alabama, so nobody's gonna feel sorry for you.
I think everybody understands that, and it's just gonna come
with the territory. And I'm really looking forward to Kaylen
to Boord and your two Kane go Mack. I sat
down and talked to him. He's doing some things defensively.
I think there's just gonna be in a better position
defensively because you understand what you can and can't get
away with. You know how teams attack you in the
previous year. You'll take that into consideration when you go
(06:02):
back out there, because everybody plays the same team and
so knowing that, all right, what do they do that work?
Because they're going to try and do those same things.
They might not line up in it, but they're going
to do those same things that they have success with.
So I think another year in the system will give
all these guys a lot of benefit and they will
be better. Also, having coach Grubb of the offensive coordinator
(06:23):
coming back from Seattle will be another big time boost
for this offense.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
So let's talk about South Carolina for a second. They lost,
I believe, and I know you're deep in the film.
You're back at it for the most part. You and
your boy Cole Kuberlick, who stood me up this week.
By the way, tell I'm mad at him. He but
in all seriousness, I love y'all show. And you know
I was thinking about South Carolina. I was talking to
folks today. You know it's Virginia Tech South Carolina in
Atlanta to open up the season. Shane Biemer against his
(06:50):
alma mater all that stuff. They have an electric quarterback,
and they have talent. They might have the best edge
rusher in the league in Dylan Stewart. Nick Harbor is
a great athlete. But they lost seven starters off that
team last year. A lot of it defensively, guys like
Nicki Minvari and Jordan Birch and guys like that. Like
they've got the quarterback, so that is the biggest piece.
(07:11):
But there are a lot of folks saying we don't
think they can overcome all they lost from last year.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Where do you fall in that conversation.
Speaker 5 (07:19):
I'm kind of with that just because I'm traditionally I'm
not used to seeing South Carolina to be able to
plug and replace as fast, right and give us too.
It's a great player, but remember he only had six
and a half stacks. A lot of it was benefiting
because he had talking him away CJ. Sanders Saunders in
the middle. You also had the Kyle the other edge
player that had he in a half. Yeah, Kyle can
(07:40):
Kyle Kanard, Like all these guys were game wreckers, Nick
I mean warring the back also the middle linebackers night
that can't transfer it over from Georgia tch like all
these guys are a big time playmaker. South Carolina won
a lot of games defensively last year. And so yes,
they have the quarterback. And everybody loves to talk about
quarterback because once you got a quarterback, you got a chance,
and so you don't worry about that now it's right.
(08:01):
Do we have the pieces around him to help him
be successful. He became a much better player from the
beginning of the season to the end of the season.
That's why everybody's so excited. And he should be at
South Carolina, like you gotta dude, And so do they
have the enough wide receivers around him to give him
a chance to be great? And then also can they
protect him? And you lost Rocket Sanders, who all of
a sudden came back to form last year as well
(08:23):
at running back, So who's going to be the running back?
Do they have enough offensive line talent to protect this
guy so he's not just running for his life because
last year he was just kind of playing a little
bit in that tine. But I also need him to
stand in the pocket and deliver to the wide receivers
whoever want to step up. And then defensively, how they
get these guys. They had so much production on that
side of the ball, it's just really hard to say, like, Okay,
(08:44):
South Carolina, you just got it. And you know they
got to play some teams too, so that you know,
nobody's gonna give South Carolina a game. And you know
last year they lost a couple that they probably could
have won and wanted to win, like that LSU game.
You know that's one they definitely want back, and you
know it's just one of those things. And Alabama game's
another one that they should have had but they just
(09:04):
didn't win it.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
So Texas was voted by a wide margin to win
this conference. I believe ninety six first place votes if
I'm not mistaken, arch man one hundred. I know, I
think it was more than a hundred, but you know,
it was ninety six points for Texas than Georgia had
forty four. So like this was a wide margin that
I think Texas was voted to win the conference. There
is a ton of belief in arch manning. There's tape
(09:28):
out there. I see it just in terms of potential,
but you know, there's a lot that we still need
to see from arch They they've spent money. I think
Sark's a good coach, but are you a deep believer
in what Texas has coming back?
Speaker 2 (09:40):
In totality, I.
Speaker 5 (09:42):
Got Texas in the SEC championship game. I don't know
if they win it, but I do think I just
like what Sark and those guys are doing. And once
you go on that campus, you understand it. Dude, they
got everything, so how they handle that part of it
would a termine their success. But Sark's going to be good.
He's gonna be a great play call. The arts is
gonna be good. But let's talk about what they lost.
(10:03):
They lost their top three wide receiver as far as production.
They also they also have to replace their whole offensive
line pretty much and their defensive line. So their defensive line,
they had some dudes too. And that's another team that
won a lot of games because they had the number
one or number two defense in the country last year
and they didn't give up big plays. And so when
(10:23):
you lose the Jim Thorper winner and Johnny Barron, who
is you know that means the best defense back in
the country. You also lost to Andrew mccouba, the transfer
from Clemson who went in the second and third round.
As a safety, you got some guys to replace, and
so if you give up scores defensively, this Texas team
is not the same as we saw last year. But
(10:44):
arts Manning just gives everybody a lot of hope. And
you know, he's a sexy pick right now. I'm not
mad at it at all.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Are you buying Georgia?
Speaker 3 (10:51):
I just had an angry Georgia fan tell me that
Texas is overrated. They were voted second the conference are
what are you buying Georgia?
Speaker 5 (10:59):
I'm not buying. Well, I mean, I'm gonna buy Georgia
because Kirby Smart's there. But as far as what they're doing,
you know, I just look, Kyle. I've been covering the
sec since twenty twenty and when they got there, Bro,
they had dudes. They had Jordan Davis, they had Jaylen
Wyatt the other defensive tackle. They had Jalen Carter coming
off the bench. They had Nolan Smith, they had the
(11:19):
Kobe Dean. You know, they had another linebacker that went
to Green Bay in the first round. You know, they
had multiple safeties, Malachi Starts. They lost seven dudes off
the defense last year, included Mikel Williams, who didn't even
get no burn at first, and so you know who's
their best guy along with Jalen Walker. So how do
they replace? Continue to plug and replace? That is not
so much a Georgia problem as much as it's a
(11:39):
college football problem right now. That you know, Georgia went
out and got some wide receivers, but you know, the
coach and Mike Bobo still got to call it and
the quarterbacks got to be able to deliver the football
on time. And we saw versus Notre Dame. When they
need to stop the run, they didn't and when they
need to protect the quarterback they didn't. And so you
got to get these things short up. But Georgia, they're Georgia,
and a step back for me is still nine wins.
(12:01):
But still that's not where Georgia wants to be. Can
they be in the playoffs? Yes, but you know, will
they be able to outlast LSU? Who if LSU wins
the first game versus cleansing watch out.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Speaking of order of finish, if I had told you
two years ago that going into the twenty twenty five season,
Vanderbilt would be voted to finish higher than Florida, Tennessee,
Ole Miss, and Auburn. I don't know that you would
have believed me now. Clark Lee once upon a time
promised to make Vanderbilt the premier football destination in the
Southeastern Conference. Last year, they were tough, they were pretty good.
(12:35):
They got the quarterback back. They think they're a better
football team. But they're not sneaking up on anybody this year.
My guys are going to see him in Week two.
What do you think of Vandy after what they did
last year? Can they improve upon it this year?
Speaker 5 (12:49):
I hate to be a repeat offender, Kyle, but they
got quarterbacks, so they got a can hear you know?
Hark Lee is not going to be calling the defense
this year. I don't like that. I thought he did
an excellent jobs of playing great sounds defense with them
call in the game. Because calling the game is a
skills It's not like Madden where everybody's just gonna do right.
You gotta have field. You got to understand when you
want to get them and then play a little bit
(13:10):
more passive and expect the offense to make a mistake.
They did a great job of that last year, especially
like versus Virginia Tech. You know, they finally want a
game late that they normally, traditionally have never been able
to do that. So you know, with Diego Paves, you're
going to have a chance. But they got a tough
schedule and we're gonna have to see. Man. I still
got bandy like just getting fixed games. And I think
(13:32):
Florida is a team that will be better, you know,
but that goes on DJ Lagway. If Lagway's healthy, they
got a chance. If he's not healthy, you know that
team is not even close to being where they want
to be. And it's just so interesting because a game
or two early is going to make you so much
more desperate later and right now the way the SEC
stacked up, Man, dude, those top three or four teams
(13:54):
are going to be what they're going to be. But
really and truthfully, teams one through eight can all beat
anybody depending on when and where you play them. And
who's that actually available for you to go? Kyle, I
gotta say this too, well. I just monstered this drive.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Thank you you matched the drive?
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Is that what you said?
Speaker 5 (14:13):
Mask?
Speaker 6 (14:13):
Bro?
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Oh how's the round going, by the way?
Speaker 2 (14:18):
How far in are you?
Speaker 7 (14:22):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (14:22):
No, he's on the move again. Isn't he. He's in
the golf cart. He's moving.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
Yeah, can you hear me?
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Now?
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Do y'all have cell towers in Alabama?
Speaker 5 (14:31):
Dude? I don't know. Bro I'm up on a mountain,
broa in my Huntsville Dude, I've never been up here.
It's called the edges, the ledges. I'm sorry, And uh,
we are out here, dude. I can see like the
Space Center. I can see where they like fire off
rockets and test stuff at like I can see the
whole I can see everything, and so it's a little
bit different. But I did shoot a forty three on
the front, and uh, we're gonna see about this back
when I got to add it up, it's probably not
(14:52):
a forty three because I had a freaking on a
par five. I hit one, ob so I had an eight.
So you know, I count all my stroke.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Been putting in the work.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
That's that's impressive stuff, all right, Roman Harper with us
here hanging out on the hot line.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Two quick things. I'll let you get back to your round.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
I don't know if you heard or not, but the
Cleveland Browns were in town today for a joint practice.
Your guy, your guy, Bryce Young look good. Like even
the Clemson excuse me, even the Cleveland guys we had
one on earlier said he was really impressed with Bryce.
The offense had a good day. Roman, like, I know
they bought back your loyalty when they brought him in.
How are you optimistic that they could take a big
jump this year?
Speaker 5 (15:28):
What is a big jump? Eight wins?
Speaker 3 (15:30):
I think so eight to nine wins, yeah, eight to nine,
eight to ten wins would be yes.
Speaker 5 (15:35):
I could see that. You know, they're in a weaker division.
It depends on what New Orleans things to do, too.
You know, Tampa's going to be good. We got to
see what Atlanta does with Bijon and you know, the
young quarterback, and if they're ready to take that next step,
that'd be another interesting thing to see. But they just
you know, you got to win some games early to
give you confidence to win them late. To me, like,
that's that's that's what it's going to come down to.
(15:57):
If they dropped some games early then maybe we think
they probably should have won, then you're gonna lose games late.
So they got to find ways to win. Because nobody
on this team besides j. J. Danton, who's only snapping
has ever won anything, and so they how do you win?
How do you learn how to win? You've got to
go out there and do it. And so that's what
I'm a little bit concerned with. But what Dave Canalison,
(16:18):
this team is trying to build. I'm buying it, like
they're getting the right pieces. I love where everybody thought
they'd get a defensive guy and they went and got
the wide receiver. I love that move just because, like, dude,
like know your identity and go get it. And if
you want to supply or support this first round quarterback,
go get his dude. And they went and did that.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
They did all right. Last thing, stay in the South.
The reports out of New Orleans are not great. They
still have some talent, we all know that. But the
quarterback situation, again just via reports. I'm not there. Maybe
you've stopped in, but it doesn't sound encouraging. What are
you hearing that?
Speaker 5 (16:53):
I just hit another green in regulation? All right? But no,
no serious business, Okyn, dude, you know it's so tough.
I don't think they're you know, we're trying to see
if they're going to hit the reset button. The one
thing the Thanks haven't done is hit the reset button.
(17:14):
Since they've lost the bree, they haven't taken their time
and tried to build and I think they're trying to
do that and let the thing kind of play out.
We're going to see how it goes. I'm just excited that,
you know. I want to see what Spencer Ratler could do.
I want to see what the Tyler Shuck can do.
I want to see these guys. I want to I
want to see it. Maybe if Han wins the job,
I don't know. Actually, just as long as you're competing,
(17:35):
then you're going to get better. And that's what they're
trying to do. They're trying to build an environment to
make sure you go out there and compete. But I
have not. I was supposed to go down to the
training camp two weeks ago, but I actually had to
work the SEC media day, so I couldn't go down.
I'm gonna try and go down at least before the season,
see if I can take these guys out and what
everybody's saying about the team.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
All right, Live from the golf course, Harper Gilmore, you
want to guess on the Bodyworks Plus guest hot Line.
I got to give Jack credit for that, and he
wants me to call you Harper Gilmore on the way
out the door. Hit him straight, Yeah, hit him straight, buddy.
We appreciate you. We'll talk to you when you get home.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
Thanks, Colin, Because I'm in Alabama.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Roll time, Roll time, Roman Harper hanging out live from
the golf course in the Hills of Alabama, Huntsville specifically,
a lot of folks said they don't like the stray
that JJ Janssen just caught right there, Russell and Vermont
all Caps snapping is a vital part of the game, Roman,
buckle up quote unquote only snapping. You watch that JJ Slanders, Sir,
(18:33):
He's a panther's legend.
Speaker 7 (18:34):
I mean, we already know Roman's opinions on the interior
of the offensive line, So why is this a shocker.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
It's not a shocker, but he does love JJ. All right,
seven oh four, five, seven oh ninety six to ten.
Hit us up on the FanDuel text line. We'll come back.
We reset smoke, and I went to the joint practice
today with Cleveland. If you're just tuning in, we will
tell you what we observed. Sports Radio ninety two to
seven WFNZ.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Don't know how I got my name? I abi Kevin
Dons Why all right?
Speaker 3 (19:20):
So Roman Harper texted me during the break and would
like for me to let you all know that he
parted eighteen As he was talking to us live from
the golf course the Ledges in Huntsville, Alabama, he hit
me with a Parsky on eighteen bro, to which I responded,
are they mailing your tour card?
Speaker 7 (19:34):
To do?
Speaker 3 (19:34):
You have to pick it up? So Raman would like
to let you all know he parted the eighteenth hole. Anyway,
big thanks to Roman Harper for popping in good conversation
right there. I want to talk Panthers for a couple
of minutes, because well that's the biggest story of the day.
Cleveland Brown's in town for a joint practice today. If
you missed the start of the show, our takeaway was
Smoke and I were both there with the assembled media
(19:56):
from both teams. Lots and lots of press out there today.
Panthers all had a good day. Bryce Young threw the
ball very well, and some of the receivers, Jayleen Cocher
in particular, look good. Jayleen Coker, who's had a very
you know, a relatively quiet camp, right relative to McMillan,
and all the conversation about Hunter renfro and Xavier lee
(20:17):
Get who did have a touchdown grab today and a
couple of other catches too. Jalen Cocher had a really
good day. But before we talk about the current wide receivers.
As we were walking after practice to go to the
press conference, I bumped into Dan Morgan on his way out.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Good. Good to catch up with Dan. Good to see him.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
And then as we walked away from Dan, Smoke said,
you didn't even realize that you were just standing next
to Deontay Johnson, did you?
Speaker 2 (20:41):
And I said, no, I did not.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Former Panther wide receiver and Steeler wide receiver and Texan
wide receiver and Raven wide receiver. Now with the Browns,
which you probably forgot. Deontay Johnson, well, he admitted earlier
today that he lost a lot of money after so
the way things were handled here in Carolina last year.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
Son, I never really think about it.
Speaker 8 (21:04):
I mean, it's still be in the back of my mind,
you know, because I obviously messed up a lot of money,
you know, doing that whole time. So I regretted every day,
but I said, I'm not perfect so like this year,
I'm just worry about the little things and what I
can do to contribute to the offense in some sort
of way, you know, make the most of my opportunities
(21:25):
and just be a good teammate.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
First of all.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
Good for him, Like you can hear the humility in
his voice that I don't think was there a year ago.
That was one of the all time worst bag fumbles
that we will ever see in professional sports. Is it
the biggest, No, But it's in that second tier of
oh my god, that dude just cost himself twenty million
(21:48):
dollars probably, yeah, I mean in that neighborhood, right, twenty
to three, depending on how last year could have gone
for Deontay Johnson.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
What do you lose? What do you leave on the table?
Speaker 7 (21:59):
At the absolute, very bar bare minimum fifteen million, anywhere
from like fifteen to twenty three million I think would
have been his range on a contract. If all he
did was just take take the lumps go for the year,
he probably would have gotten what eight hundred yards receiving
because at least yeah, because we kind of forget, you know,
(22:19):
throughout all the pain. He is a really good route
runner and he can get open yeah, quite easily. And
we saw that in the games where eighty Dalton was
playing the first two games specifically the Washington or not
the Washington, but the Cincinnati and Vegas game. He could
get open, could have had eight hundred yards receiving anywhere
from like four to seven touchdowns. Yeah, say deuces goes
(22:41):
and gets whatever he gets and then Carolina likely gets
on the camp pick formula.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
But he's a guy who knows everything that's been said
about him for the last year. Oh absolutely, and how
could you avoid it? And he knows, right, he absolutely knows.
Now he was a problem here last year, and it
really was frustrating at times when that happened, you know,
to hear some of the people go after Dan, you know,
why didn't you get more? And when it first happened,
you and I were like, that's kind of disappointing. We
thought maybe he could get more for trading their top
(23:07):
wide receiver. And then very quickly I'm talking to people
that were like, non, okay, b this is a problem.
He had to go. He had to get out of here.
And there were some people that were defending him and
I'm like, ah, that's not what I'm hearing.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
Like he was a problem.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
You know, they didn't know if he show up for practice,
if he chow up for the weight room, you know,
for training sessions. Then he gets dealt out of here,
goes to Baltimore and you know, refuses to go into
a game. Then he gets cut there, ends up in Houston,
makes the playoffs with the Texans, and after they win
a playoff game, is sulking and had to be consoled
in the locker room by teammates because he didn't get
(23:40):
any targets during the playoff win. Like so, like he
has to have heard everything that's been said about him
for the last year, and it is truly one of
the worst bag fumbles I have ever seen in the
like watching professionals.
Speaker 7 (23:51):
And now he if he wants to get another shot,
he will have to be truly tested because he will
be playing for the Cleveland Browns and the Merry Go
round of quarterbacks that they have this year.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
Correct, No mo play just said Deontay lost about twenty million.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
He's sick about it. Yeah he should be.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
Brian says, Dennis Shrewder is the number one worst bag
fubel in sports history. Is there a worse one than that?
I don't know what was nearly one hundred million, was it?
Speaker 4 (24:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (24:19):
I thought it was like eighty But still that's gross, Like,
that's that's enough to make you vomit if you knew
you left eighty million dollars on the table.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
And that's after all the money he's made in his
NBA career.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
Yeah, like, unless your Bill Gates or Elon Musk and
eighty million dollars is a rounding error for almost everybody else,
that's you know, catastrophic. Anyway, seven oh four five, seven
ninety six ten hit us up on the fan duel
text line. Panthers had a good day offensively today. Defensively,
it's hard to say. We do know that the Panthers
(24:48):
run defense had a pretty good day today against Cleveland.
That much seems to be the consensus of everybody covering
practice today. Carolina had a good day against the Cleveland
run game. I don't want to understate that or gloss
over that because considering how bad this defense was, but
particularly the run defense in twenty twenty four, that's a
(25:11):
big deal. So I oh, by the way, smoke Miles
bridges one of the worst bag fumbles of all time.
We forgot about that one, all right, So anyway back
to the point. So anyway, you know, the run defense
had a good day, but the offense. That's where it's
not that the offense being good is more important. It's
(25:31):
that we kind of expect me kind of we expected
the offense to be the better unit.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
We know they have to be good.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
We're hoping that the quarterback who showed us a nice
long stretch of competent to very good football last year
can pick up where he left off and produce for
an entire season. Right, So we need the Panthers offense
to show up and show out. You need the Panthers
offense to validate what you hope or even for many
(25:58):
believe that they are the defense.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
You need them to be better.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
But coming off of historically bad you're still kind of,
you know, bracing yourself for not so good. Right, so
it won't shock you if they're bad. People will be
legitimately surprised if the Panthers offense sucks out loud, and
I don't think they will. But the offense had a
good day. Bryce Young was accurate. He was throwing with rhythm,
with timing like you just love to see it. Smoke
(26:23):
give me twenty five. Dave Canalis after practice today said
he was really happy with both what he saw in practice,
but also the discipline that both teams showed.
Speaker 4 (26:32):
We were up for the challenge.
Speaker 9 (26:33):
You know, we had a wet practice yesterday, but I
just loved because of the opportunity to go against the Browns.
Kevin Stefanci and I have known each other for fifteen years.
We both were quality control coaches for Darryl Bevell who
was down in Miami, and so he and I have
a lot in common, and so you know, we had
some good interchanges that the veteran guys met before practice
(26:55):
talk about rules of engagement. You know, this is this
is what we're expecting. We expected to be a physical day.
We're not gonna dive it legs and on our side,
at least on the offensive side. That didn't happen.
Speaker 1 (27:04):
It was a.
Speaker 9 (27:04):
Physical style of play, and the good part is too,
like when the emotions start going. There was a couple
of pushing and shoving and a little bit of face
mass lock up a couple of times. But I saw
two groups come in there, not to throw haymakers and
blindside shots, but to pull the guys apart, and they
were kind of jawing at each other in a playful way,
big smiles and a lot of juice. I mean, I
(27:24):
can't I can't dream of a better situation, a better
scenario to have that kind of competition, but also to
be able to respect each other. And so really really
just tribute to you know, Kevin and the Browns coming
in here and getting some good work in.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
All right, So that was the big overview of practice.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
Now.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
I was in the press conference, smoke was there Anybody
who asked Dave about the defense today was met with
the answer, don't know, got to watch the film. I
didn't look at the defense very much because he downside,
the one downside of him being the offensive play caller
still too correct. He did not spend any time with
the Panthers defense today, and that's okay. He gave the
keys to his euro E Arrow, who he trusts inherently,
and like you said, Dave is the play caller and
(28:05):
he needs to be there watching and working with the offense.
And so he said he's going to go back and
watch the tape. He heard some good things. I think
run defense specifically was mentioned, but it certainly was reported on.
But Dave's focus was the offense today and he gave
the big overview of what he saw from the offense
in practice the first.
Speaker 9 (28:23):
Couple of drills, I think the first team period, I
was I was excited about the execution. I was excited
about the physicality of it. You know, some of our
play actions we were able to hold up, which can
get a little funky, you know, with different fronts. It's
a different defense, you know than what we've been playing
all camp, so that's a challenge. But I loved the
run game, loved how we moved it, you know. And
(28:44):
then the second team period it got sloppy. You know,
we weren't throwing flags we had we had I think
three delay of games and two fall starts. We can't
have that, you know, we we're going to put ourselves
in really bad spots, you know, when we're trying, when
we're putting ourselves in first and fifteen, you know, or
if it's at the in six and we have a
false start, you know, all of a sudden, it's third eleven,
you know, and he makes it really hard. You know,
(29:05):
that's now you're in the twenty percent or less, you know,
conversion zone. So I think that's something that just from
what I saw, you know, I was I was very
excited about the physicality. I was very excited about the
execution after the snap pre snap. These kind of opportunities
really shine light on what you need to work on.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
And so all right, so that was Dave's takeaway from
the offense. Bryce threw it well. Jalen Cocher had a
good day. More on that in just a minute. And
I think Xcel had a pretty good day. Tenoral McMillan
had a pretty good day. You know, McMillan had at
least one touchdown, Grab would have had another, but there
was a defensive pass interference flag because he beat the
defender and the defender just said screw it, and you know,
(29:46):
Flare chopped him across the arms to prevent the touchdown.
Would have been a score though, So McMillan had a
good day. The other big story of the day though,
was that J. C. Horn was not at practice today.
Speaker 5 (29:55):
J C.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
Horn was involved in a car accident prior to practice.
He was on his way to the facility and was
in a car accident. I think at the corner of
Minton Moorhead where we are at the doghouse on Friday
for pregame at every Sunday, so Horn did not play.
Here's Dave Canalis with an update.
Speaker 9 (30:11):
I'm glad that Jac was okay. He did have to
have a few stitches in his left thumb area, and
so they got that all cleaned up and sutured up.
He's day to day right now. We're just going to
kind of evaluate. It doesn't seem like anything else happened,
but you know, we're just gonna kind of evaluate him
each day. He'll be able to still do some activity
(30:32):
and running and all that, but he will not play
this game. Hopefully we can get him turned around so
we can take advantage of an opportunity in Houston, you know,
for that game, which was kind of the plan all along.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
All right, so Jac again stitches in his hand. I
don't know, stitches or sutures. I'm not sure which one
it was. Dave Canalis said both. But he won't participate
on Friday. And you know, today there were some reports
that the Cleveland Wide receivers made some plays. Hard for
me to verify that as far away as they were
from the assembled media, but part of that, if it's true,
is that Jac Horn was not able to practice today. Also,
(31:03):
Dave Canalis asked how much work we should expect to
see from the starters on Friday against Cleveland.
Speaker 9 (31:09):
I think a couple of series. My hope is if
you get a good long first drive, we're done there.
You know, if it's a three and out on either side,
I'd love to give them another shot, you know, somewhere
in the if I had, you know, a perfect number,
i'd be probably eight to twelve would be like my
high hope for the group. And again, like we talked about,
it starts the night before. It's the preparation, it's the
(31:32):
morning of, it's what you eat on game day. It's
the body readiness, kind of working through those nerves before
the game and getting yourself into a great space, great
headspace to be able to perform.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
All right, there you go.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
So eight to twelve plays ideally for the offense on Friday,
that's pretty standard. I mean, you go three and out,
they're probably going back out there. They run a nine
play scoring drive, they're probably done for the night.
Speaker 7 (31:54):
Yeah, nine play seventy five yards, yeah yeah, five minutes
Like audios, get those shoulder pads off immediately.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
Go go rest up and le Smoke said, put on
a long sleeves T shirt. So that's what to expect
on Friday. And I don't have time to play the
clip on Jalen Coker, but Cocher had a couple of
touchdown grabs today. Dave Canalis said that that guy looked
looked like a different athlete coming back from the five
weeks off leading into training camp. They're very impressed with
the work that he put in going into the training
(32:22):
camp and the work that he's put in thus far.
And it showed today like for a guy who's had
a comparatively quiet training camp, you know, relative to his
peers in the wide receiver room, Jalen Cocher picked a
good day to have a good day.
Speaker 7 (32:33):
Yeah, And you know, we haven't really touched on this
as much when it comes to Jalen. I noticed this today.
He's been getting a lot of reps on special team. Yes,
so that's something he was both on punt coverage, pump block.
He was also on kickoff return, not as the kick returner,
he was on kickoff two. So I'm like, I think
they're all He's also really going all across the room
(32:54):
because he's like, hey, I'm like wide receiver at four,
wide receiver at five.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
Like, so he's still in the back end of the roster.
Speaker 7 (33:00):
Or even though a lot of people love him and
are big fans of him, he's going to have to
be multifaceted if he wants to stick on the roster,
which I think he will.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
It's not a bad thing, by the way, it's not
a bad thing.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
Like he's still earning his He's still an undrafted free
agent who had a good rookie year, but he's not
a made man at this point. He's got another good year.
We'll cement that status, but he's not a made man,
not yet. All right, hit us up on the fan
duel text line seven oh four or five seven oh
ninety six ten, Right now we go to smoke on
the headlines.
Speaker 7 (33:29):
Alrighty, Kyle, So got some more news out of the NFL,
specifically a reunion. Keenan Allen has signed a one year
deal to be reunited with the Los Angeles Chargers, giving
him get another weapon. Even though he is older. He
did have a big year last year for to Chicago Bears.
And here's the real kicker, Kyle. The Chargers used to
(33:51):
pick they acquired from Chicago into keenan Allen trade last
year to move up and draft Lad McConkie. They're now
both on the same wide Receiver corps a year later.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
How about that?
Speaker 1 (34:01):
All right?
Speaker 3 (34:01):
Well, come back, we'll wrap up the show. Sports Radio
ninety two seven wfn Z, Hey one final time, Sports
(34:25):
Radio ninety two seven wfn Z KB and Smoke with
you a bag of donuts. My guy, he's sending in
nice things, so of course I'm gonna read that. He said,
great show today, guys, covered a lot of topics and
a lot of ground, great guests and is always the
best energy from you and Mayor Smoke. Mayor Smoke, I'm
gonna get you on the ballot. We're gonna find out
about this. I believe that Smoke TC earlier on the
(34:48):
show said that Smoke needs to run for mayor of
Lincolnton someday, and I agree with that, and given his platform,
I think we need to start the conversation now. And
all I ask is that you allow me to be
your press secretary.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
That's all right.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
How much does it pay?
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Why are you asking me?
Speaker 4 (35:03):
I don't know?
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Okay, Well, I mean you got a computer over there,
why don't you google how much does the mayor of Lincoln?
I mean, I'm assuming it's Lincoln. I was gonna say lincolnkiny,
but the mayor of Lincoln. How much does the mayor
of Lincoln make? Why don't you google that? All I
want to be is your your press secretary.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
That's it. I want to be your uh, you know,
your your Caroline Levitt.
Speaker 7 (35:26):
Oh, yeah, she's the one.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
That's the I can't remember had a pull up list.
You're h You're Jen Psaki, You're Kaylee mcanaaney, You're you're
Sean Spicer. I want to say, we're gonna have to
go off further ones and A. You could be my Scaremoucci.
I will you gonna fire me right away? No, that
could be your Dana Perino. Like I'm just rattling off
previous press secretaries in the White House.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
I can say I didn't.
Speaker 7 (35:47):
I could not tell you anyone until like from my childhood,
Like I just saw random people in suits.
Speaker 4 (35:53):
That was my assumption of what the press secretary was.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
Fair enough.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
Scott the UFL Hawk just said I would commit voter
fraud to get smoke in office. Cam tweets things that
he just bought a house in Belmont, but he will
sell it and move so he could vote for you
and Lincolnton. So you have support, man, you have support.
We're going to work on this. I really want to
find out if we can get Smoke on the ballot.
I also need to find out if they would make
you quit your radio job if you ran from mayor.
I think they might, so maybe this is backfired all right. Anyway,
(36:19):
we got to catch you up on what you've missed.
It's time for the rewind and we go back to
our number one. Zach Jackson covers the Cleveland Browns for
the Athletic. He was then Charlotte Today for Joint Practice.
Had a great conversation with Zach. And here is Zach
(36:39):
Jackson on what's the goal for the Browns in the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
Room that they gets a number one pick next year? Probably,
but you know, you know some of them are thinking that,
and they probably have to think that way, right, But
the truth is the coaching staff can't think that, and
the roster can't think that, and I think Joe planco
probably gives them the best chance to go up be
competitive early. Five of the first six are against the
(37:02):
teams that made the playoffs last year, and the other
ones against the Bengals too. If they would have got in,
maybe could have won it all. Right, So they have
to show up ready to play. And Joe's seems so much.
He's the only one who's been on this team before,
in this huddle, in this offense. You know, there's been
some speculation that they wanted to be Kenny Pickage just
because he's younger. They feel like he has some upside,
(37:23):
whether I agree or not, and it's mostly not. He
got hurt on the fourth practice and has not had
a full practice since. Right, And now by the time
they get back to work on Monday, we're into mid August. Right,
we're into the second to last week of the preseason.
So they drafted Dylan Gabriel in the top one hundred,
which stunned everybody. And they drafted Shador on the last
(37:43):
day after Dylan Gabriel, which undercut Dylan Shador and everybody else.
So it's a mess. Nobody benefits from four quarterbacks out there,
and the quarterback of the future is probably not on
the team. Okay, there is a guy that has a chance.
It's should or stand.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
Later in the show Leo Maazoni long time at Land
of Braves pitch Coach, Braves Hall of Famer and with
a near no hitter in Cleveland today and a graphic
that reminded us the Braves haven't thrown a no hitter
since nineteen ninety four and Kent Merker off offering that
no hitter. Here's Leo Mazoni on the funny story of
Kent Murker's no hitter in nineteen ninety four.
Speaker 6 (38:17):
Oh, I remember it a lot number one. He come
in in the sixth inning and he says, I'm tired.
And I looked at him.
Speaker 4 (38:25):
I said, what are you nuts?
Speaker 6 (38:27):
You know, in other words, they don't say that now
right Cally said, you know, okay, we'll get you out.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
He says, I'm tired.
Speaker 5 (38:33):
I said, what are you nuts?
Speaker 2 (38:34):
He goes, what do you mean?
Speaker 1 (38:35):
I said, well, look up on the scoreboard and I'm
cleaning it up. I said, look up on the scoreboard.
He no. I said, yeah, you.
Speaker 4 (38:42):
Got a no hitter going for crying out loud.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
You's tired.
Speaker 5 (38:45):
He goes no. I said, okay, let's go.
Speaker 6 (38:48):
So then he goes back. He goes out for the
ninth and he's perfectly fine. He throws one hundred and
twenty seven, fishes ninety two fastballs and gets his no hitter,
and he only pitched seventeen.
Speaker 4 (39:01):
Years after that.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
Later in the show, Roman Harper, two time pro bowler,
super Bowl champion, SEC Network analyst. Here's Roman Harper saying
he's concerned with the game Cocks losing so much on
defense to be a true SEC contender.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
I'm kind of with that just because I'm traditionally I'm
not used to seeing South Carolina to be able to
plug and replace as back right and deal us star.
It's a great player, but remember he only had six
and a half stacks. A lot of it was benefit
because he had talk to him away t J. Sanders
Saunders in the middle. You also had the Kyle the
other edge player.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
That had he levered in a half.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
Yeah, Kyle Canard, Kyle.
Speaker 5 (39:38):
Kanard, Like all these guys were game wreckers, Nick, I
mean Warring the back also the middle linebacker Night that
can't transfer over from Georgia Tech. Like, all these guys
are a big time playmaker. South Carolina won a lot
of games defensively last year. And so yes they have
the quarterback and everybody loves to talk about quarterback because
once you got a quarterback, you got a chance, and
so you don't worry about that now it's right. Do
(39:59):
we have the pieces around him to help him be successfully?
Speaker 3 (40:02):
That's the rewind to look back into the show each
and every day as we wrap things up as a
reminder to get us wherever you get your podcast Apple, Spotify, Google,
just search the Kyle Bailey Show, download and subscribe.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
We sure would appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (40:26):
I I am very humbled by the generosity, but the
last thing I want to do is get into politics,
even at the local level.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
So yeah, but you're the you're the man that people need,
Like you're you're like Batman, You're you're the You're the
guy that we need.
Speaker 7 (40:42):
Yeah, you're kind of butchering it, but yeah, I got
what you're saying. Screwed that up pretty bad.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
Yeah, Yeah, I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
There goes America campaign all right. I'll tip my cap
to the Panthers offense. Good day of joint practice. We're
back tomorrow, looking forward to it. Cameron Wolf of the
NFL Network stops by Willie p. Carla Metz. Should be
a fun show. Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z.
Speaker 7 (41:02):
You're gonna be dead in a one hundred years anyway, live
dangerously
