Speaker 3 (00:23):
We're number three live for platform sports in South End.
Good to be with you, KB here smoke back in
the Chandler Vaulted WFNZ Studios, the Carolinas Personal Injury Lawyers.
One call that's all go to Cvinjurylaw dot Com. Five
o'clock hour, Still asking for your Monday headlines today. It's
our first opportunity to do this going into Week one.

(00:45):
Panthers playing on Sunday one o'clock kick. Somebody asked me
earlier if this is going to be the highest viewed
one o'clock game on the schedule, And I gotta be honest.
Of all the things that I'm confident in or not
confident in, I might be least confident in that.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
I don't. Yeah, I don't know if they asked.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
I thought it was a sarcastic thing at first, but
then I reread it and I just couldn't tell, honestly,
So to whoever asked that question, will this be one
of the higher viewed games in the one o'clock window. Uh,
I don't know about that. Man, Like we got you
got Tampa and and Atlanta a divisional bout to start
this thing out. There are a lot of options, all right,
we'll put it that way. So we'll take a full

(01:23):
look at the week one schedule here in just a second.
But let's welcome in and welcome back in the Chandler
vaulta WFNZ studio Nate Wemberley, longtime Sports Directors sports anchor WBTV.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
He's back for a Friday sit down. What's up, Nate Wemberley?
How are you, buddy?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Hey, what's up? You're not interested in Travis Hunter?

Speaker 1 (01:42):
That would be the biggest reason why people might watch,
is like, what is Travis Hunt gonna do? I?

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Of course very interesting, absolutely.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
But do you think that's enough to push this up
toward the top of the one o'clock window viewership? Could
you think so it could? Okay, I'm just trying to think.
We got New York and DC, right, you got Giants
and Commanders. That's gonna be on Fox. That'll be a
widely watched game. Steeler Steelers and Jets, Aaron Rodgers and
Justin Fields.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Okay, right there there, you got no I'm sorry, not bad.
That's okay right there, that's where you're going. That's where
you're probably going. Raiders Patriots like Raider Nation, they're still
out there. There's there's still a lot of them.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
And the Patriots have Drake May, so they're they're pretty
you know, they're really committed fans up there.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
I don't know. I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
I think a lot of people are interested in Carolina
in Jacksonville, but I don't know. It's the NFL. We
know the NFL is back, and that's the biggest story
of the ball. So let me let me start with that.
All that's happened. I think it was back on July
twenty sixth. I believe for twenty fourth that camp broke
and everybody reported, and we've seen joint practices and preseason
games and injuries and roster cut downs and re signings

(02:44):
and everything else. It's kind of been a roller coaster
again as we are now forty eight hours out, less
I guess from from week one, what are you thinking
about this football team?

Speaker 2 (02:54):
I still don't know.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
I mean, like, we didn't get a lot that we
didn't see a lot in the preseason game. So I'm
still wondering and scratching my head and all those good things.
I just I feel like I felt last year going
into the season. I just don't like the way they're
going into this season. You bubble wrapped everybody. You didn't
play anybody in the final preseason game, and you bubble
wrapped them up. And a couple of weeks later, now

(03:17):
you got three of your three fields of your offensive
line dealing with injury. It's just, you know, the way
the roster is, the cut the roster cuts went down,
and things of that nature.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
I just don't have a good feeling it.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
And I think what I'm feeling is this thing is
gonna play out exactly the same way it played out
last year. You're gonna stumble out the gates, you're gonna
figure it out, and then you're gonna be playing your
best at the end. That's just my gut feeling for
this team this year. I thought, you know, I'll go
ahead and say I put it out there. I picked
earlier the day on the point, after six and eleven,
I had them at seven. I'm dropping it back to six.

(03:50):
I just don't have a good feeling about the start.
But eventually this team is gonna figure it out. And
I'm not even gonna say the team. The defense is
finally gonna figure it out midway through the season, and
that's where you're gonna start seeing this just like last
year started. When they're playing those tougher teams in the
middle of the Buffalo's and the Green Bays, you're gonna
figure out.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
You're gonna see a team.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
That's playing but they can't get over to the hump,
but they're playing well enough to win. And then at
the end, it's where you're gonna pick up the chunk
of your wins at the end of the season. I
just don't have a good feeling going into the year,
but this seems as too talented to not win six.
You know, I'm saying the base is six, I think
the height is nine.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Okay, but I guess for me six and eleven. Does
that get somebody fired, ta get somebody replaced?

Speaker 1 (04:31):
No? And you know what, I posed that same question
to Alex Zadler of the Observative Day on the point after.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
I think it depends on how it looks.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
If everybody stays healthy and Bryce plays well and he's
looking like a franchise quarterback and at least he makes
you think about giving him that fifth year, and you're
going towards that, you know, big extension at the end
of the the rainbow. You know, I don't I don't
think you know, that's gonna get anybody fired. Now, if
Bryce doesn't look good and this thing, they just kind

(05:01):
of just sputter. They're good, they're bad, they're good, they're bad,
and at the end you're left scratching your head like
m uh, then it might be time to have some
of those kinds of conversations. But you know, as long
as there's progression and a step, I think, you know,
six wins, you're one more than you were last year.

(05:21):
That's one more winning you had last year. I think
they're fine. Oh okay, that's interesting.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
I mean, now, if that better case scenario happens, right,
you said six and eleven, you think that the ceiling
is nine? Yes, if they win nine, what will be
the difference in six versus nine? It will it be
because an individual player steps up and as a big year.
What will be the difference between six and let's say,
best case scenario nine wins?

Speaker 2 (05:44):
It's the defense.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
To me, I'm not worried about the offense in at
least even with these injuries right now, on the offensive line,
that's the deepest part of this team. I think they're
gonna be fine. They'll be able to whather that storm.
I think it all just comes down to this defense.
This defense is you got to be much better than
you were last year, and you can't really go down
because you have one of the worst ever.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
You know, but you're not.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Gonna take a It's hard for you to take a
step from being one of the worst ever to maybe
even midpack.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
I mean like they're gonna have to.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
And if they get to midpack, middle of the you know,
you know, fifteenth in the league. In defense, I think
they can get to nine wins. But it's all on
the defense. I have no worries about this offense. I
think I think Bryce Young is gonna perform again like
a first round, first number one overall pick. I think
tedor Roy mcmiland's gonna have an outstanding year to run

(06:35):
a game that they're gonna run the ball more than
what they did last year, and it's gonna help Bryce
play even better. I do not worry about the offense.
It is strictly on the defense. This year, and they
have got to come around quickly if they're gonna win
nine games, all.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Right, Nate Wimberley WBTV in studio with us here, I
wonder about the run defense on Sunday, Nate. That's a
big part of it for me, because I think to
your question about the defense, will they be better or
how much better can they be? If you're a believer, right,
if you're of the more optimistic variety, Let's say you
got Derrick Brown back, you signed Bobby Brown for that
express purpose. Ashawn Robinson was missing his running mate last year,

(07:12):
but he had some very good Sundays. Turk Wharton's coming
over everything else. I'm looking to Sunday and I see
Traves ETN and I see Tank Bigsby, and I respect it.
But if I'm Dan Morgan, I am expecting those guys
to go out there together and be run stoppers. If
they can go out there and stop the run consistently,
I think that changes the complexion of his defense entirely.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
If Jacksonville's gonna run on you on Sunday, folks getting
ready for a long season, I just you know, if
you're not stopping Jacksonville from running the football on you
and running it nine your throat. It is definitely gonna
be a long season and then you're gonna be looking
at that base of six. But I think they will
be able to stop that running attack. It's just I
don't think it's that potland, So you should be able
to stop the run. Now, middle linebacker comes into question,

(07:57):
Dan or inside linebacker. I'm sorry with uh, Trevan Wallace
and Rose Boom. They're gonna have to play in it
because they're gonna they're very important in stopping that run.
So you know, that is a very huge key to
this game. You know, if you can make them one dimensional,
then yeah, everything's gonna be I'd say that.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
And then you got to go to the back end
of the thing.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
So especially at safety, you know, the second safety other
than Morty, but you know, they definitely have the stuff.
If that'll be a tail test sign. If this team
can not stop to run against Jacksonville, boy, it's gonna
be a long season around here.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
Uh yeah, Nate Nate Wibberley WBTV in studio with us here.
Let me let me transition back to the college game
real quick. Gotta get your thoughts on Monday night primetime,
Bill Belichick Michael Jordan lt. I mean, is there is
there a greater alumni tandem ever in the history of
a stadium sitting together than Michael Jordan and Lawrence Taylor
together at Kingdom Memorial Stadium and everybody's there.

Speaker 4 (08:57):
The lights are bright, the fireworks are going off.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Church is doing this this montage on ESPN, And they
go out there and they march down the field and
they score seven points right away, and everybody's thinking, I'll
be damn Bill Belichick ain't playing around. And then they
just get worked for the next three and a half
quarters plus and it's forty eight to fourteen, and all
week long, the entire national media and college football fan base,

(09:21):
everybody has been destroying Belichick since what happened Monday night?
What is your take on what happened there?

Speaker 1 (09:27):
He deserves to be destroyed, That team deserves to destroyed,
that destroyed. It was so bad. Michael Jordan was up
at Philadelphi. He won't at least go watch a good
football game this week at some point, so he went
to the Eagles Cowboys game in yesterday. I'm like, what,
but back to day that was just it was shocking
to me that it played out that way. I would

(09:48):
have thought that, you know, you know, everybody would have
thought that Bill Belichick team would be at least competitive.
North Carolina wasn't even competitive. That was just ridiculous. That's
just mind blowing. It's just really really mind blowing. And
now you know, I'm listening to a sports start radio
in Atlanta, and everybody's like, ooo, glad we didn't hire him,

(10:09):
because boy, if it to look like that, like what
are we doing?

Speaker 4 (10:14):
What are you doing? Listening to the sports talking Atlanta day.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
You know, it's home, brother, it's but you know, I mean,
it's just it was crazy, and it puts a once again.
The spotlight will be on Charlotte tomorrow as they try
and see it's North Carolina. What are they going to
do against the forty nine ers. Now, I think it's
going to look a lot better. But if it doesn't,
oh my god, the sky is going to fall in

(10:37):
Chapel Hill. And if if I'm if I'm a fan,
I'm a forty five. I think the forty nine ers
fans feel a little bit better about their team, and
their team didn't look that good, but I would feel
a little bit better going into this game as a
forty Nineer fan than than the Tario fan, because that
the forty nine ers, they at least put up us.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Whatever a fight.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
After the after you know, they got molly wopped coming
up towards the Halse, that game was over for for
North Carolina and and and and TCU. So I just
don't where was the fight for North Carolina? Yeah, that's
the question. Where was your fight? Where was your heart?
It's just like that, that was just ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
So then are you one of those that looks at
the Charlotte matchup this weekend at Jerry Richardson Stadium it says, well,
they they're probably not gonna lose, but dot dot dot
now all of a sudden, it's a lot more in
question than it was a week ago.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
I kind of look at it that way, you do,
I do?

Speaker 1 (11:32):
I mean, like, I still think, you know, Nor Carolina
should win by a couple of touchdowns or ten points
or something like that. If they don't, didn't, if it's
if it's a one score game in the fourth quarter,
then boy, no, Tarhio fans better they'll be looking at like, uh,
Hubert Hubert Davis. When does the basketball season start because

(11:54):
they're they're gonna mel it in at that point if
you can't, if you're not gonna beat up on Charlotte. Oh,
and I think it's I do believe about a half
everybody's gonna be sitting there looking at it, like what's
going on here? Yeah, So I think Sady's gonna be
interesting that Generiss I do too.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
And an underrated element of this discussion is simply the
fact that and I think you've been around long enough.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
I know you've been around long enough to know this.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
We don't see it that often, but an instance is
like this, where you have a goat you know who's
taken over.

Speaker 4 (12:23):
He's in a different place. He's getting everybody's best shot.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Every single week, every coaching staff is desperate to beat him.
They want to say they beat Bill Belichick. That's the
message they're conveying to their teams all week long. So
in addition to him taking over and doing this for
the first time and starting over and try to rebuild
the roster, they are going to literally get everybody's best shot.
This is gonna be so many teams super Bowl over
the course of this season date because they all want
to say they beat Bill Belichick.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
And maybe that's the thing that the the tar Hill
players don't understand or they really hadn't grasped it. They
grasp it now a little bit. But Sean's gonna come
out there and they're gonna want to prove a point.
And a guy like kind of coin of Horrel uh
at quarterback who was at North Carolina last year, what
do you think he's thinking. He's like, man, I want

(13:07):
to show these these these guys what they're missing. And
to your point, I I never even thought about that yet.
This is their super Bowl. You know they're gonna come out.
They're gonna give Nor Carolina their best shot. And I
think the Tario players now know that. You know, bro,
we we got to come ready to go because if
we don't, anybody can you know, put it right upside
our head again and we'll be sitting to be looking

(13:28):
like what's going on? Oh yeah, that's an underrated aspect
that I didn't even think about it at all. That
you know, Yeah, you're gonna get everybody's back, even though
you're North Carolina and you because you have that coach,
everybody's wanting. They're gonna come out and want approve a
point that hey, uh, welcome to Welcome to college football.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
This is how we do things.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
Yep uh.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Terrell on the text slide, Terrell tells me, if we
beat the Tar Hills, y'all won't be able to tell
me bleep. And I get a picture. I get a
picture of Shannon Sharp shaking his head. The famous jiff
of Shanned gift or whatever of Shannon Sharp shaking is
if we beat the Tar Hills, y'all won't be able
to tell me bleep.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
I can't blame you a bit if that turns out
to be the case. All right, Nate, real quick before
we switch to high school football. Biggest result of Week
one in college football other than what we were discussing, obviously,
some big wins, some big losses. Alabama comes to mind,
Clemson bit of a let down. What was the biggest
result from week one for you?

Speaker 1 (14:19):
It would have to be Florida State absolutely, But you know,
I'll go here. I picked South Carolina as my dark
horse to win the SEC and I'm you know, it's
coming out. At the first drive. I was like, oh boy,
look at it. I might be right here. And then
they kind of just kind of settled into the game,
but you know, they pulled it out in the end.
I feel good about South Carolina and I think they're

(14:40):
going to improve as they go each and every week.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
So you know it.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
You know, I'm not gonna, you know, say that was
the biggest one. But it's got to be Florida State
the way they just manhandled Alabama up front on the
offensive defensive lines. Man, they thoroughly whipped that tail. And
that was just shocking to me that Florida State did that.
But it has to be to Florida State over Alabama.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
All right, let's talk high school football. Uh, somehow we're
already in the week three again. We always wonder how
this happened so quickly, but we got a bunch of
games tonight. Let me start with this where you headed?
What games are you covering?

Speaker 4 (15:13):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (15:13):
Actually, let me let me let me do one more thing.
Uh Gardner, well over Western Carolina as well. Oh that
was somebody.

Speaker 4 (15:19):
Oh yeah, no, yes, that was for smoke, right.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Okay, all right, yeah, Well I'm glad.

Speaker 1 (15:28):
I'm going to Catholic Providence Day, a battle between two
two of those teams. Uh, you know, Providence Day is
just kind of quietly going about their business winning games.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
And they beat Roman Catholic in week one.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
They went up to Roseville, the state runners up last year,
beat them.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
So Providence Day is back right now.

Speaker 5 (15:45):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
You know Raven Gap who won the state championship last
year versus them, they're on two. Uh, but they played
a couple of great teams. But Providence Day is looking
like that juggernaut again.

Speaker 6 (15:55):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
But Catholic just you know, just just doing their thing.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
Gotta running back uh Garrett and now Alan Uh he's
run for three hundred yards and four touchdowns. So uh,
Proberinence Day is gonna try and shut him down and
make Catholic beat them some other way. So it's gonna
be an interesting battle to see how Catholic can handle things.
If they can slow down Garrett, how are how is

(16:18):
Catholic gonna score? Both defenses are great in this game, though,
So that's a pretty big game. Our game of the
week is Ashbrook and Northwest Cobari's Camp. Guess is gonna
be at that one. That's a battle between two more
two and oh teams.

Speaker 7 (16:29):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
Both teams a high expectations so that they're out the
gates and playing well. Probably the most underrated game and
spoken out talked about it made that North Lincoln. North
Lincoln's running back from last season, Shannon Wingott, is now
at Mate. Uh, so you know North Lincoln is gonna
be like, Okay, you want to leave, all right, We're gonna.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
Shut you down tonight.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
So that that's gonna be a very interesting matchup at
the biggest little football town in the world.

Speaker 2 (16:53):
Made North Carolina.

Speaker 4 (16:54):
Well, if you got a question for that, you might
want to sneak it in real quick.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
I'll throw in one. Butler Hermo game's interesting, right because
I got Butler in Week one against the Olympic. They looked,
I mean, they probably should have lost that game, but
they find a way to win it. It's one of
the most misleading scorers I've ever seen in the history
of a high school football game. And I mean that respectfully.
It's week one, weird things happened. But Brian Hales, who's
back on the sideline at Butler, he started two and

(17:18):
oh and they've been shaky in both of them, but
two and oh is two and oh and now they're
going down to to see Aaron Brandon Iermo tonight at
seven o'clock.

Speaker 1 (17:25):
Iermo's two and oh got a real impressive win over Burns,
South Carolina last week. They're they're rolling again, even though
his son is now at Virginia Tech. You know, this
is gonna be a tough one for for for Butler.
They're gonna have to really, really really play well to
to beat IRMO down at IRMO. So that is gonna
be a big game. I think Irmo is gonna be

(17:46):
too much, but you just never know. Sometimes Butler goes
on the road. They went down to Georgia a couple
of years ago and everybody I thought, oh, I ain't
gonna go down and get smashed. They upset the team
down there, so uh uh. And they were coached by
Hale's at that point, So you just never know. Uh,
Butler's gonna get The thing about Butler was this year.
You know, Coach Hails told me they're gonna be better

(18:08):
at the end than they are at the beginning because
you know, he's got a whole bunch of new guys
because a lot of the guys kind of left and
once the coaching change happened, so he was working with
some guys that you know, he really wasn't he knew him,
but he wasn't really familiar with him, and he knew
that they was gonna get better towards the end of
the year.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
Hey, you're two and oh right now.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
If you're gonna get better than that, it's gonna be
a special season for Butler though.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Uh, but I think tonight Irmo is gonna get him.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
How about Deshaun Baker and Huff headed up eighty five
going to Richmond, h in Virginia. They're they're playing out
of state tonight to face Highland Springs. For those that
don't know, Laura Johnson the head coach at Highland Springs. Uh,
he's won state championships up their former Division one football
player himself. He's built a powerhouse program up in Richmond.
That's where Huff's had it tonight.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
Yeah, the the unfortunate thing behind the Springs. I think
they lost their best running back. But he's got a
couple of brothers that play on the team as well. Uh,
they're gonna be They're gonna be a formidable foe for Huff.
But man, you know what travels defense? Huff shut Independence.
They shut Independence out last week thirty five to nothing.
Their defense is good, folks, So that thing's gonna travel. Uh,

(19:13):
and I you know, I don't know exactly how they're
gonna do it, but I do believe Huff is gonna
go up there and and and surprise those guys and
beat them because that defense they're playing well, and and
Ethan Royal is playing well at quarterback. Right now, Huff
has got it going on. But you know, I'll tell
you this, there is a team in their conference, Myers Park,

(19:34):
that they better watch out for. Myers Park beat Wennington
last week twenty eight to eighteen at Wennington, So you know,
against that defense, Myers Park put twenty eight points up
and Wennington has a three power four guys on that team.
One going to Notre Dame, two going to South Carolina. Uh,
Myers Park is good. So uh pay attention to Myers Park.

(19:57):
And I think Huff the Huff Huff season, they got
their attention now Myers Parking Huff or on a glision
course in that conference.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
Boy, we got some good games tonight outside of Mecklenburg County,
A A. L. Brown and Morsville tonight. That one's gonna
be fun. We got Weddington and Roe coming up tonight
as well. Some really good games and shout out to
of course our guy branded Gandy Victory Chevale's Victory Chevrolet,
his son Camera Gandy quarterback at south Lake Christian. They've
got Charlotte Latin tonight. So I mean the games around
the region again, Date one aother week, great games all

(20:25):
over the place.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
Absolutely, wes Yarlette is at south Point rock Hill. So
West Charlie got a rebound win last week over Monroe
forty seven to nothing. They got to go down and
do it again because South Point their defense they've already
got in two games. They got fourteen sacks and thirty
three tackles for loss in two games.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Better bring you, better bring your offense.

Speaker 1 (20:44):
And but you know Jimorrt Nichols man, he just at
quarterback for wet Shall.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
He gets better and better every week.

Speaker 1 (20:50):
That's gonna be an outstanding game, the test to see
how he goes up against that South Point defense. So yeah,
that's that's a very big game as well.

Speaker 3 (20:57):
All right, love it, Nate, have fun tonight, be safe.
We'll talk to you next Friday.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
I have a good weekend hereybody enjoyed the games.

Speaker 3 (21:02):
There you go, Nate Wemberley, WBTV Longtime Sports anchor sports
director twenty eight years on the job here in the
Queen City. We appreciate him hanging out with us each
and every Friday. Don't forget Monday headlines today asking for him.
You got about thirty minutes to get him in Panthers
and Jags Week one, your thoughts on the game. Don't
forget Sunday morning, eleven a m. We got couped down
to kickoff live from Twin Peaks in Concord Mills. We'd

(21:25):
love to see a ton of you out there. I
know Frank from Waxhall would love for all of you
to come out there and hang out with us at
Twin Peaks at Concord Mills. But a tradition, just like
many other Sunday morning, myself and Chris McClain two hours
of Panthers pregame. So send me your Monday headlines today.
What happens in headline form, We'll talk about it. Sports
Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ Whiskey D on the

(22:02):
FanDuel text line, Ever the Optimist here on a football
Friday where I'm asking for Monday headlines today. Whiskey D
Ever the Optimist, because things always work out for a
guy named Whiskey D. Right, he says, let's just enjoy tomorrow,
Panthers fans, because after Saturday, all the optimism is out
in the window and we're back to being the Carolina Panthers.

Speaker 4 (22:22):
Lol.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
I mean, yeah, I guess, okay, I guess. Listen, I'm
in a place. We're all getting older. You know, I'm
about to be forty. Colin Hoggards in his early forties.
We're all sitting around wondering a sports fans if we're
ever gonna get to see one ever, you know, some
some title somewhere. You know, we're all asking the same question.
But damn, Whiskey D, do we have to do this

(22:43):
on Friday? I mean you might not be wrong, but
I mean, come on, what SI just enjoy the final
day of delusion and delusions of grandeur and these irrational
hopes of the Panthers even being decent, because after tomorrow
all of our respective existences will fade back into misery
and obscurity. And what's it all for anyway? Why are

(23:04):
we even getting out of bed in the morning and
going to where? Why are we even talking sports every day?
On WA You get the point? I mean, yeah, maybe
I guess we'll see, but I'll take the optimistic stuff too.
In fact, that almost preferred at this point. Seven oh
four five, seven ninety six to ten. Hit us up
on the FanDuel text line your Monday headlines today for
the Carolina Panthers trophy. Husband my man saying mistakes were spotted,

(23:29):
Jags struggle to put it together. Let's go. I like that.
That's creative. Let's do some more of that. Mistakes were spotted,
Jag struggled to put it all together.

Speaker 4 (23:39):
All right, let's see what else we got here?

Speaker 8 (23:41):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (23:41):
What do we got?

Speaker 8 (23:42):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (23:42):
D Mill.

Speaker 3 (23:42):
In the seven oh four Back to the Future, Panthers
and Bryce Young pick up where they left off last
season with an impressive win over Jacksonville. The future looks
bright dot dot dot for now. Four now all right?

Speaker 4 (23:57):
I like it? Two to one.

Speaker 3 (23:58):
Four number in Texas says hey, Kyle, this is Patrick
and I'm a Panther fan, but no one is talking
about my nephew, Charlotte's own Dammy Brown.

Speaker 4 (24:06):
He's a threat.

Speaker 3 (24:07):
KB with a ninety eight receipt with ninety eight receiving
yards first half playoff game against Detroit while playing for
the Commanders last season, super quick and nice receiver.

Speaker 4 (24:16):
Well, Patrick, thank you for the text.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
I assure you nobody's forgotten about your nephew, heck of
a player. But he's saying, hey, let's not forget about
Dammi Brown. No, it adds to the anxiety for Sunday. Honestly,
I believe that the Panthers offense against this Jacksonville defense
is gonna put points on the board. They should. If
they don't, it will be a massive failure. And Dave
Kanalis and Bryce Young and company will deserve the ripping
that they get on Monday if they can't score on

(24:39):
this Jacksonville defense. But as far as stopping this Jacksonville offense,
go Smoke.

Speaker 4 (24:43):
He's right. You and I were going over the depth
chart yesterday.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
It's not just Brian Thomas, right, It's not only Tank
Bixby and Travis ETN and Travis Hunter. Yeah, Deammy Brown
is a problem this defense. Smoke is going to have
its work cut out for it on Sunday, and especially
and you factor in Liam Cohen, who is one of
the more gifted offensive minds we believe in the NFL.
Trevor Lawrence, I still think, obviously has a ton of

(25:08):
talent and Liam Cohen might be the right guy to
unlock him. You got to be a little bit wary
of this. This Jacksonville offense on Sunday definitely in the
deep friend.

Speaker 5 (25:14):
And even though we have you know, a lot of
people have kind of written off Trevor Lawrence, he still
had a lot of very big potential moments in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (25:21):
He just hasn't put it together.

Speaker 5 (25:22):
So you can't you can't act like that Trevor Lawrence
is some bomb in this situation. So I think that's
something that we got to put into perspective as well.
I do want to point this out, though, Kyle. We've
mentioned a lot about the two thousand and three and
twenty fifteen season, the parallels starting to year against Jacksonville, YadA, YadA.
I have not heard anyone mention this in two thousand
and three when they beat the Jaguars twenty four to

(25:43):
twenty three. That game was played on September seventh. When's
Sunday's games con September seventh? Mm hmm, yeah, September seven.
I want to let people know, So are you, like,
are the stars of a linex smoke? Is this gonna
be the Shaker, because did you what did you think
the Panthers were gonna do in twenty fifteen. I'm joking,
but I'm also kind of serious. Do you recall, yeah,

(26:06):
I do. What did you think they'd do? I thought
they were gonna be around nine to seven, nine and seven,
ten and six. I was worried with the Calvin Benjamin injury.
I was like, Atlanta kind of scares me a little
bit because remember that was the NFC South matchup. But
think about it for as much as this fan base
and I get it, it's all Pine and this guy,
but the two super Bowl years, let's be honest with ourselves,
all right, no one was expecting a trip to the

(26:27):
super Bowl both years. You fought playoffs in twenty fifteen, Okay,
you did, but you didn't think it was gonna be
legit super Bowl contenders. As a kid in first grade,
I don't remember anyone really talking about playoffs as a
Pine to Sky mentality. And I mean the locker rooms
from that team has made it known since then that
the reason that they really started to get hope was

(26:48):
because Michael Vick got hurt in the preseason against the Ravens. Okay,
and I think ending this Saints to year prior it
was accumulation of things. But you gotta remember, I believe
in the first half of that Jacksonville game and three
Rodney peat was like four to ten for nineteen yards
in the first half.

Speaker 4 (27:05):
So yeah, yeah, if you want to, yeah, it was bad.

Speaker 5 (27:10):
So I just I just want to point out that
most of the time that Carolina has made the playoffs,
most of the time, and specifically their two deep runs,
they weren't expected to be legit contenders. I'm not saying
it's gonna happen, because I don't think it is, but
I can't ignore that fact too. I don't even know
what the expect if the expectations were to have a

(27:30):
legit playoff chance in nineteen ninety six either, even though
they were seven to ninety year prior. The only years
where it felt like that playoffs were a legit expectation
that they made it were the two thousand and five
season too. Maybe not even two thousand and eight because
Jake was coming off with Tommy John surgery. And I
would also throw in twenty fourteen and twenty seventeen.

Speaker 4 (27:52):
All right, give me number three if you would please.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
Uh, the Meda Times show her and Benjamin Solac chopping
it up. Uh, just because it's on topic for what
we're discussing right now. They were discussing the massive changes
for both the Panthers and the Jags going into this season.

Speaker 9 (28:08):
All four of these units potentially dramatic changes. Jaguars defense
moving into Anthony Campanelli. He's coming from the Packers defensive background, right.
We know how creative that team was, all the sim pressures,
all the drop in his own coverage. They were very
aggressive in the preseason running pressures from depth. They're gonna
do a lot of different stuff. S can maticaling this
Jaguars Defit's has seen before. Panthers defense reloaded everywhere, right,

(28:30):
Get to Sean Wharton into the building, Get Javon Merrigan
into the building. We're drafting two rookie edge rushers. They
need better snaps there. And then on the offensise side
of the ball, how does pet McMillan affect this price
young resurgence? Is that a legitimate thing in twenty twenty five?
And on the Jaguars offense, which is where my note is.
I mean, like everyone's excited about the Liam Cohen edition
and the Travis Hunter edition.

Speaker 3 (28:49):
All right, so I mean this the problem here, Smoke,
is that neither one of these fan bases trust either defense. Right,
Panthers fans don't trust their defense. Jacksonville fans don't try
us their defense. But it's also Week one, so you
can look at this and say, well, you know, neither
defense was good at all last year or two of
the worst, if not the two worst. They both made

(29:10):
massive roster upgrades, but these defenses were bad obviously the NFL.
You know, every season's different and you should be a
different team. You should be better if you're making good
roster moves. But like, could this be a shootout in
Week one or do you just expect because it's Week one,
it's probably gonna be ugly and low scoring no matter what.

Speaker 5 (29:27):
Ladder Yeah, ladder yeah, That's what most Carolina Panthers games
have been over the years. In opening weeks. It's been
very rare to see the offense clicking on nall cylinders
to start the year. And I'm not just talking about
you know, the last few years. I'm talking about like
franchise history. It's been very rare for the offense to
really be clicking, even if they score above twenty points.
So I'm expecting a lower scoring game between these two

(29:48):
teams on Sunday, I really am.

Speaker 4 (29:51):
Yeah, I do too.

Speaker 3 (29:52):
I mean I probably in the twenty one to seventeen
type of area. I mean that even sounds a little
bit too clean for this game. Like you're probably going
to get some turnovers. You could, hell, you could have
a safety the end. The possibilities are limitless in the
game of football, but this one, you know, could be
a rather ugly game, simply because it's it's Week one.
North Star Race fan says he expects sloppiness. He agrees

(30:13):
with Smoke Scott in Belmont says, if you can't believe
that this team and staff can't beat a first time
head coach, OC and defensive coordinator, then we are in
for a rough year.

Speaker 4 (30:23):
Yeah. Well, the thing is, though, and it's a Scott.
You're right. You'd like to believe that your.

Speaker 3 (30:27):
Team with a returning head coach, returning quarterback, returning DC
can beat a team that's got newcomers in all those positions.
But a lot of y'all don't think is zero everro'
is any good at his job anyway, you know, Brad
Brad Izack, of course, helps to coordinate the offense, but
he doesn't call the plays. And and Dave Canalis is
going into year two, and while I do think he
was fine in year one, what's he going to be

(30:50):
in year two? Is he going to be more than fine?
Does he continue? You know what we thought was some
pretty savvy play calling down the stretch last year?

Speaker 4 (30:58):
Or does that regress at all?

Speaker 3 (30:59):
I mean, these all things that again you just have
to wait until the season starts to get answers to them.
But the fun of doing what we do is trying
to predict what we're gonna see coming up on Sunday.
Crypto pool, Crypto pool with a headline Bitcoin alight, So
BTC hits an ath. I think that's Bitcoin hits an
all time high, and so does the pants. So does
the Panthers offense at Jacksonville sets franchise game record for

(31:23):
yards from scrimmage? Smoke off the top of your head,
what is the Panthers record for yards from scrimmage in
a single game?

Speaker 4 (31:28):
Do you know? Does this include special teams?

Speaker 5 (31:32):
I guess so it might be that two thousand and
two game against the Bengals a fall thanks when they
scored fifty two points. Because that also had like two
punp returns for touchdowns for Steve Smith, I wouldn't be
shocked to do.

Speaker 9 (31:42):
No.

Speaker 3 (31:42):
Yes, yards from scrimmage went total would not include special teams,
so anyway, go ahead.

Speaker 4 (31:45):
Thank it. Okay, there goes that one. Uh maybe not.

Speaker 5 (31:48):
Christmas Eve game against the Lions a couple of years ago.
Oh oh, we need more points against the Saints in
ninety nine would have been.

Speaker 4 (31:54):
Up there too, right.

Speaker 5 (31:55):
Uh, probably that was when Jake Calum got sacked by
Kevin Green. That was that was dicause last game.

Speaker 3 (32:03):
Carolina Panthers record for yards from scrimmage in a single
game is two hundred and thirty seven yards, set by
Christian McCaffrey. That's that's an individual. Oh well, no, no, no, no,
I know you, I know you're young. Wait wait wait
wait wait wait? Who is that game against Jacksonville twenty nineteen.

Speaker 4 (32:21):
Yeah, yeah, yeah it was.

Speaker 5 (32:22):
It wasn't it was a blue matt that was the
the it's a seamac attack.

Speaker 3 (32:26):
Uh in okay, here we go, here we go, here
we go. Steve Wilkes twenty twenty two. Yes, Christmas Eve, Yes, yeah,
five seventy that's what it was, Okay, Steve Wilkes, Carolina
Panthers yards from scrimmage, five hundred and seventy yards from
scrimmage that day against the Lions thirty seven to twenty
three Christmas Eve. I mean horrifically cold field, as hard
as a rock.

Speaker 4 (32:46):
Jacy got hurt because of the field was so damn cold. Yep.

Speaker 3 (32:49):
Deontay Foreman and Chuba Hubbard both rushing for over one
hundred yards in the first half alone in that game. Uh,
they set a single season rushing record in a game
with three hundred and twenty yards as it's team that day.
So yeah, the single season yards from scrimmage record for
Carolina was set against Detroit Christmas Eve twenty twenty two. Oh,
they're talking strictly running, No, No, I Google, I googled

(33:11):
team yards from scrimmage. They ran for three twenty they
threw I guess for two thirty. Right, yeah, yeah, So
five hundred and seventy yards from scrimmage that day is
the team record for yards from scrimmage in a single
game for Carolina. All right, seven oh four, five seven
ninety six to ten. Couch coach Kyle saying, we have
two thousand yard backs. If we don't run the damn ball,

(33:32):
I'll loose my mind fair enough. Andrew Norwell's agent on
the FanDuel text line, Dallas first time head coach looked
damn good last night.

Speaker 4 (33:40):
Shot and Hobbard didn't look bad. I didn't think he
was bad at all.

Speaker 3 (33:43):
Clearly, they didn't win the game, and so I don't
want to go too far in the praise, but I
know Dallas fans weren't horrified by the job that Brian
Schottenheimer did last night. So I think that exceeds some
of the expectations that people had for him. There's no
doubt about that. Kyle from Maine just screaming at us,
run the damn ball. Dave, thank you, Kyle Hope main Street.

Speaker 4 (34:01):
You well.

Speaker 3 (34:02):
David from Troutman, Jag you are not Panthers. Department of
Defense shuts out the Jags.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
That's good, Dave, that's good.

Speaker 3 (34:11):
David from Troutman Monday headline today, Jag you are not Panthers.
Department of Defense shuts out the Jacks. I think David
from Troutman gets the best headline of the day on
that one. Smoke, don't you. Oh, definitely Oh, that's good stuff.
We've had a lot of good ones here to start today. Really,
y'all have delivered Monday headlines today today. I'm really impressed.
The FanDuel text line has been awesome here on a Friday,

(34:32):
So well done to all of you. Just a fantastic,
fantastic body of work. All right, let's go to smoke
on the headlines. All right, Kyle, Well, you mentioned Christian McCaffrey.

Speaker 5 (34:45):
Christian McCaffrey's in the news over the last thirty minutes
because he did not practice today. He went from full
participant on Wednesday, limited on Thursday, did not participate on Friday.
The injury occurred Thursday, a situation to monitor closely. This
was a CAF injury and since the COVID season, CAF
has been a big problem for CMC.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
Yeah, I mean, how much do you think he has left?
I mean, he always looks like a Greek god, so
I don't want to get two keys to hear.

Speaker 4 (35:15):
But like I mean, but it's wearing down.

Speaker 5 (35:16):
It's wearing down more and more, and I think, I
honestly think this could be his last year of the
forty nine ers. You do, Yeah, I think he could
be you know, especially with how tightner cap constraints are
gonna get over the next twelve months.

Speaker 4 (35:27):
Now that brock Perty's.

Speaker 5 (35:28):
About his gets a contractah or he got his contract
and it's about to kick into effect in twenty twenty six,
I think they're gonna have to make some tough decisions
and I believe their last chance to really capitalize well
CMC at running back was when they lost the Super
Bowl in Las Vegas and OT.

Speaker 4 (35:42):
I'm just what, like, at twenty nine years old?

Speaker 3 (35:43):
He just turned twenty nine this summer like that, How
many elite seasons do you think.

Speaker 5 (35:47):
He has left under his belt? I honestly think it's zero.

Speaker 3 (35:52):
Really Yeah, Okay, I wonder about it myself, especially at
that position.

Speaker 4 (35:57):
All Right, what else you got? All right?

Speaker 5 (35:59):
Got some games here tonight and for out the weekend.
First off tonight at seven pm, James Madison takes on
Lousville and an intriguing group of five Power four matchup
on ESPN two. Why are you Braves fans that are
taking on the Seattle Manners, a team that's still competing
for wild card and that's going to be pretty big, Cayle,
Because cal Raley sitting at fifty one home runs, needs

(36:20):
four more home runs at the time Mickey Mantle for
the most home runs by a switch hitter in baseball history.
And I believe a lot of the Raleigh family are
going to be out there because that's the closest game
for them to see Cayle Raley since he's out in Seattle.

Speaker 4 (36:33):
All right, well we'll come back.

Speaker 3 (36:35):
We'll wrap up the show live for Platform Sports in
South fIF give it away Panthers tickets tonight.

Speaker 4 (36:40):
Y'all.

Speaker 3 (36:40):
The party goes till eight o'clock. Get out here and
try to win some Panthers Dolphins tickets for Week five.
Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ one Final Time

(37:08):
Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ KB Here at
Platform Sports in South End. The party continues on into
the evening. They're giving away tickets to Panthers and Dolphins
in Week five at the bank. You're gonna want to
get out here and try to win. These Panthers players
showing up. Former Panthers I should say, KK Short joined
us earlier in the show, and the likes of Trede Boston,

(37:29):
Charles Johnson and others expected to make an appearance tonight.
So we're told by ownership. So get out here. It's
a heck of a place to watch the game. Chiefs
and Chargers tonight from Sam Palo Brazil, and we'll see
if Patrick Mahomes and company get off to a solid
start trying to get back to the Super Bowl. And
of course Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers what will they
look like to start twenty twenty five. All that's coming up,

(37:52):
but right now we have to catch you up on
what you've missed.

Speaker 4 (37:54):
It's time for the rewind.

Speaker 3 (37:58):
I believe, and we go back to our number one
Chip Patterson, cbssports dot Com, CBS Sports Network and the
Cover three podcast with us every Friday. Here's Chip on
if he thinks Mandy Diaz, Darien Mensa and the Duke
Blue Devils can upset number twelve Illinois tomorrow at Wallace
Wade Stadium.

Speaker 6 (38:17):
You know, I think that in road environment, they're going
to really lean on this ground game, you know.

Speaker 10 (38:23):
Kind of just blow things down because Duke goes fats right.

Speaker 6 (38:27):
Offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer, he just want to go sasa's fast,
let Garry and miss to fill it up. How do
you counteract that long flow? Methodical drives. You might get
them Wisconsin ret Vilma out there in this game.

Speaker 10 (38:40):
Duke defensive front, gotta get stopped, gotta get off the field.

Speaker 6 (38:44):
Maybe force some turnovers, because the game plan right now
leads like not into their strength. I think Duke is
stronger than the secondary. They've got phenomenal players and they
aren't necessarily upfront.

Speaker 10 (38:56):
I could be wrong about that, could be proven wrong
in Durham, but I just think.

Speaker 6 (39:00):
That right now, that's the game plan. You've got to
get off the field. Wisconsin's coming. I mean that Wisconsin.
Look at that Illan is coming to play bullyball and
trying to make sure Darien Minson doesn't touch the ball
all that often.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
Later in the show, former Carolina Panther All Pro defensive
tackle part of the twenty fifteen team that made the
march to the Super Bowl, KK Short joined us live
on set back in the four o'clock hour, and here's
KK on if he thinks the Panthers defense will improve
this season most definitely.

Speaker 8 (39:30):
You got Derek coming back and that was a big
key of what they needed last year, and just seeing
him work this offseason and grinding and stepping up and
being a better leader. And knowing that he's going into
whatever year that he's going to, he got the younger
guys he's looking up to him, So I think he's
going to compliment the back half that we have. And

(39:50):
the most important thing is those guys have to pay
attention to details, not think too much on that field,
make decisive moves, and just get out of the quarterback.
At this point is where everybody's just saying like, oh,
we need to do this because of that, those guys
have nothing to lose, and those guys got everything in
the gang. And you see, like I said, the mentality
that those defensive lines have right now.

Speaker 4 (40:10):
I think they will be doing just real good this year.

Speaker 3 (40:12):
Later in the show, and finally, Marty Snyder NBC Sports turner, Amazon,
NASCAR studio host and Pitt reporter saying he thinks that
Hendrick Motorsports might be in trouble this weekend in Saint Louis.

Speaker 7 (40:24):
But this weekend you mentioned Alex Bowman is below.

Speaker 4 (40:27):
The cut line.

Speaker 7 (40:27):
Chase Elliot's is just nine above the cut line. He
doesn't have a lot of breathing rooms. And if you
look at lately at Bristol that it hasn't been a
phenomenal racetrack for Hendrick other than Kyle Larson, who's been
dominant at Bristol, that has not been a great racetrack.
And that's the next weekend, the night Race at Bristol
to close out the first round of the playoffs. So
I think Hendrick Motorsports desperately needs a good weekend this weekend.

(40:51):
I know they've been working really hard. They feel like
they made some progress. They're Richmond in terms of setup
and things that they learn, which does apply to Saint Louis.

Speaker 4 (40:59):
So we'll see what happen.

Speaker 7 (41:00):
Happens on Sunday on USA, but I really think this
is going to be a massive challenge transit fart sports
on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (41:07):
That's the rewind and look back into the show each
and every day as we wrap things up as a
