Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Kyle Bailey Show, powered by Victory Chevy Charlotte,
where every month is Truck Month.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Victory Chevy Charlotte your Silverado destination.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
So Greg Olson thinks that Bryce Young's been pretty good
all things considered, coming out of Miami and the comeback
win down seventeen. Greg joined Mack and Bone this morning,
and you heard it in the previous segment, but he said, basically,
he felt like the fumble was flucish, that the interception,
those things happened, But he saw Bryce make some of
the best throws that he's made since getting to Carolina,

(00:44):
and sounds like Greg believes this offense's best days are
ahead of it. He's on the call Sunday Fox with
Adam Amine. Will talk to Adam on the show tomorrow,
assuming his MLB on Fox playoff responsibilities don't cause problems
for our scheduled appearance tomorrow, but we're expected to talk
to Adam Mean, who will be on the call next
to Greg on Sunday Smoke with janks Man. Yeah, that too.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
You blew that Lee that ruined our chances potentially have
an Adam Mean on tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah, I got to text him to find out if
it's even possible. We talked two days ago and he's
planning on coming on tomorrow, but it could be difficult,
so we'll see how it goes. Interestingly, as we played
those comments in the previous segment, and I should say,
real quick, Charles Lee, head coach of the Hornets, coming
up in five twenty five, so twenty two minutes from now.
Stick around. When I played that, the text started pouring
in on the FanDuel text line is a bum says

(01:29):
he's still on the Panthers' payroll. I don't think so.
I mean, unless he's doing things that I'm not aware of,
and I can't be certain of that. He's he's a
Fox analyst and so he's giving his thoughts on the team.
I don't think it's fair to Greg to just dismiss
what he has to say by saying he's just he's
on the Panthers payroll. I don't think that's what Greg's
been pretty honest, at least in my experience, in talking
about Carolina and doing so objectively. Everybody knows he lives,

(01:51):
he lives here, he's from you know, or he played
here for a long time. His family's still here. He's
got deep ties to the area. Now everybody knows it,
But I don't think I can recall Greg going full
homer as it relates to Carolina really ever since he's
been in that capacity with Fox when it comes to
breaking down the games.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
No, that's clearly and just go back to the interview
two years ago or even last year. At cer certain points,
I think he you know, there's been a lot of
people that have had praise for Canalis in his system. Now,
have there been weaknesses that we've seen potentially in gripes
that we've had, Yeah, but he's also I'd say Greg
Olsen's one of the smartest football mines out there.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
I mean, it's the son of a football coach.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
He's been around football his whole entire life. He is
one of us based on what he said during the
Mack and Bull Hoe how he was apparently looking at
the scoreboard early on when he was in East Rudford
and just rolling his eyes when they're down seventeen to nothing. So,
don't get me wrong, I think he pulls for Carolina
most weeks, if not all the time. But you know

(02:47):
he's also going to be fair when it comes to
his criticism.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
In my experience, he has been now. Some of the
responses that came in optimism season said how was the
fumble of fluke play? He's done it many times. Bubba
Bourbon says turns are a big deal no matter what.
Interceptions will happen to everyone sometimes, but fumbling the ball
in the middle of the field and looking like a
complete doofass is different. Walk him down, says Down seventeen

(03:11):
to nothing. I thought Bryce was cooked and I love him.
Wolf Pack James texting in to say fumbles have not
been a fluke for Bryce. They've been a consistent issue.
I would agree with that. The Bagel guy says no
offense to Greg, but I don't think he's knee deep
in Panther football. Mike Kay also called Bryce fine and
the Panthers offense elementary. Listen again, I think even Mike Scott.

(03:36):
I think Mike's a very good beat reporter. I think
Mike knows football, and I'd have nothing but nice things
to say about Mike. But you know, Greg played tight
end to a maybe not Hall of Fame level but
near it, and understands football pretty well, and he's got
a different take slightly. I mean he'd see and listen.
I don't think Greg would bury Bryce and the Panthers unnecessarily.
But I also don't think he would be giving that

(03:57):
kind of positive review if he didn't mean it, if
he didn't think it that way. But when you say
you don't think he's been knee deep in Panther football,
I don't think that's I mean really like he doesn't.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
Watch the games live, but he made it pretty obvious
that he really keeps up and talks to me.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
He also has had to break down the film all
week long ahead of this game. So even if you
think he's been busy with other games, he's still paying
attention to Panthers football. And he's absolutely been watching the
film all week long in preparation for the game on
Sunday against the Cowboys.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
And he could just talk to off the record, the
walking encyclopedia of what goes on with Panthers football, Luke Keigley.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
That's true. He said he was talking to Luke. Luke's
on the radio call for all these games. So like
he and Luke they coached together, like they're talking about
this stuff all the time. By the way, as an
unfair coaching matchup, of Case and the dynamics hilarious. You
got Greg screaming on the sideline, Luke's got the iPad
in his face, breaking down the film. Changed's just amazing.
It's awesome. I love the dynamics so much. We had

(04:55):
HJ I'm sorry, Puny Giant first says, I'm with Greg.
I've remained optimistic about Bryce. I think the perception of
bad plays turnovers included get a bit inflated and overshadow
the quote unquote really good elite plays, which there are
plenty of if you look close enough, film analysts will
readily point them out. I think jt O. Daniels or
J I'm sorry j t O'Sullivan mixed mix. Jt O.

(05:19):
Sullivan in his QB room breakdown of Bryce this past week,
was extremely complimentary of many of the throws that Bryce made.
I don't think anybody's questioning or disputing that Bryce's turnovers
put them in an early hole. But it's almost like
some people would have rather he just rolled over and
been benched and that would have been the end of it,
as opposed to him, you know, coming back and making

(05:40):
those big critical throws down the stretch. The comeback was
no doubt the reason they won. I should say the
biggest part of it was Rico Daudle and the run
game and the defense. But Bryce did make some great
throws when he had to. So it just feels like
some people don't want to give him credit for that,
even even though he did those things.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
And I'll go ahead and shout out, you know, Colin
Hardard with the st he came up with showing how
the fumbles. Yeah, they someone are a problem. There, definitely
are a problem, but they're nowhere His fumble rates nowhere
near as bad as what it feels like. You know,
prime example is Baker Mayfield. The amount of times he's
fumbled it over the last two to three years since
being in Tampa Bay. It is astronomical. And right now

(06:16):
he's an MVP candidate. So I just think it goes
back to discussion we've had. When he turns them all over,
he looks small.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
Yeah. Well, and if you want criticism or you want
some or rather analysis in the other direction, let's say
here's Greg this morning with Mack and Bone on where
he thinks Bryce needs to get more comfortable moving forward.

Speaker 5 (06:35):
Yeah, you know, I as far as we're I think
he can continue to grow. I think he just continued
to get more and more comfortable being under center. I
think we're seeing around the entire league more and more
offenses gravitating towards under center run, game, under center play action,
tying the run in the pass together. I think, you know,
you see every week there's a handful of offenses out

(06:55):
there that it's under center run and it's shotgun pass,
and it's like eighty five percent tendency.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Just you can't live with that.

Speaker 5 (07:02):
I think Dave's done a nice job kind of trying
to blend the run in the past together with all
the pretinet motions and the under center actions. I know
Bryce is just more comfortable in the gun. That's more
of what his background is growing up through college. So
that's still something they're easing in. But I think the
more comfortable he gets getting under center on first and

(07:22):
second down, I think it will alleviate having to play
and drop back pass so often, especially on first and
second down.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
All Right, So I loved what he said about that
this morning, because I do think this offense can be
it will be at its best, is at its best
when Bryce is under center more often. Okay, it just
it is. It's the NFL. You can't play from the
gun all the time, and so the ability to line
up get him under center, you know, to introduce as
much play action as possible to run the football. Obviously,

(07:53):
it's important, and we've seen more and more of it
since Bryce has gotten to the NFL. We've seen more
of it, I think the last year since Dave Kanalis
started to trust him a little bit more. But I
love Greg's answer right there because I agree getting him
under center more often, and you have to do it
in the right way and you need him to be
comfortable there. It makes a big difference for this offense
and their ability to open up the playbook. Now here's

(08:14):
the other side of the football, the defense. Greg Olsen
this morning saying that he is concerned for the Panthers
defense against this dynamic Cowboys offense.

Speaker 5 (08:21):
I think defensively this week is a tough matchup, and
obviously they're you know, they're up and down defensively to
begin with. And now in comes Dallas, who you know,
arguably has one of the top couple offenses in the
league and are scoring thirty plus a game. And I
saw them last week take it to the Jets pretty
handily without four starting offensive linemen and CD Lamb.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
So that's going to probably be the side.

Speaker 5 (08:44):
Of the ball that they got to just keep it
tight as long as they can.

Speaker 6 (08:47):
But offensively, I've seen a lot of growth, all right,
So I can you hold the Cowboys do they what
do they have to hold them to on Sunday to
win this game?

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Do you have to hold him to twenty seven? Or
if you were to win this game, what's the number
for you?

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Yeah, I think twenty seven might be or yeah, twenty
seven definitely. If you can get them to twenty four,
I think you win the game. But twenty seven I
think has got to be where you got to hold
them to. If it's anything above twenty seven, you're playing
Russian Roulette with whether or not you win this game
or not, Because I mean, I.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Think you have to believe this Panthers offense can score
thirty against the Cowboys defense, right They just scored twenty
seven against the Dolphins defense. And this Cowboys defense is bad.
I mean, like we talked about yesterday, you've probably heard
it or seen it already last in total defense, last
and passing defense, bottom quarter of the NFL. In rushing
defense yards allowed won twenty seven a game. There should

(09:41):
be real opportunities for this offense to put points on
the board. So I think you're right. I mean, you
hold them to twenty four or fewer, I think there's
a good chance you win the game. You hold them
to twenty seven or fewer, you can win the game.
They get up over thirty points, it's going to be
tough to win the game. But I think you have
to believe based on what we've seen that Carolina can

(10:02):
score thirty and it has more probably to do with
Dallas's defense than it does the Panthers offense. But we
do think that there's some good news on the offense
for this week. Now, it's a mixed bag to be
fair and accurate, because Taylor Moten's a little dinged up
and we don't know yet what the situation is there.
If he can't play, yosh Naiman will start at right tackle,

(10:24):
as we understand it, Nobody really wants that.

Speaker 4 (10:28):
Remember when after Week one where Yoshchneigen played and Dave
Canal said in his Sunday presser, yeah, I think he
did alright, and then Monday it was like yeah, uh
huh uh huh, and we saw everything come out. It's like, yeah,
he was the problem. And you think back to last
year he played at right tackle and it was a
pretty bad performance from Yosh Nigeman. If Yosh Schneizman's playing,
I don't think you can confidently say Carolina is winning

(10:49):
this game. And it kind of feels weird to say
that about a right tackle, but I think it's true.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Okay, all right, not Honeybiscuit said, we used up our
luck and put up too many points last week. We'll
score zero that come on. The thing about that is
they scored twenty seven despite two early turnovers and a
near refusal to take advantage in the second half. There
were some reasons for that, like there was a botched

(11:15):
DPI call where a flag was picked up that could
have continued a fairly critical drive. Yep, they should have
been able to punch it in early in the third
After that, Big Rico doubt a run to start the
second half, but they didn't and they got three instead
of seven. So I mean, they had some wasted possessions
in the second half that should have ended in touchdowns
on top of two early turnovers giving possessions away and

(11:37):
they still scored twenty seven points.

Speaker 4 (11:40):
And if you remember that first turnover the drive, they
were just about ten yards away from the red zone.
So at the very least you could have gotten a
field goal out of that most likely, or you could
have gotten six if Ryce Young didn't fumble it. So
like you're looking at three more points there or six potentially.
So we're talking about a whole, entire different ball game.
Now you can do this about every single game. Don't
get me wrong, but I think it's definitely possible that

(12:01):
this offense can get the job done against the defense
that has struggled.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Do I think they're better than Miami's defense? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (12:08):
But are they That's kind of the point. They're kind
of the same, right. I think they're slightly better against
the run, but still they're back end of the secondary.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
The Ron Bland and Diggs have gotten off to awful starts.

Speaker 4 (12:22):
Now, what does kind of concern me is they have
a couple of young guys, specifically at the edge that
could cause problems, especially if Taylor Mote's not playing and
Donovan Ezeraku, who we were big fans of heading into
the draft process, and I think they were definitely big
fans of and if it wasn't for Ezraku getting picked
up by Dallas, I bet they would have traded up
for Azraku instead of Nick Scorton, if I'm being honest.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
They also wanted Tedorroll McMillan really badly down there. They
wanted to pair McMillan with Ceedee Lamb. They really wanted
him to just to throw that out there, and I'm
glad it didn't work out that way, honestly, but that's
what they wanted to have happened. Carolina Madman just told me,
I know, you guys got to do your thing, but
we all know what's going to happen. We're going to
put ourselves in an early hole, get behind, abandon the

(13:07):
run game, knock him to the run not I think
he's trying to say, not commit to the run game
like we always do, get back, get close in the end,
and settle for another moral victory. Hashtag disgusting. Sorry, yeah again,
we got a little hashtag action in there. I mean, listen,

(13:27):
based on recent history, I understand why you would think
they're going to turn the ball over early and get
into an early hole. Maybe they don't. They didn't against Atlanta.
They're two to zero at home. I can't say they're
going to have the crowd at their back the same
way they would the last they did the last two games,
because Dallas fans are going to show up in abundance
for this one. But if they don't turn the football
over early to start the game, they should be able

(13:50):
to run it. That's the thing. Somebody else a minute
ago said KB, I just don't think that we can
go shot for shot with Dallas. I'm trying to find
the exact text, but someone said, I don't think we
can score with Dallas. Well, if you're talking about getting
into an old fashioned big twelve shootout and just going
shot for shot, yeah, I understand why you would doubt that.
But as long as they don't turn the ball over,

(14:12):
they should be able to come out running the ball
and maybe limit Dallas's possessions. Like that's the idea here.
You want to go out, run the football, be balance,
put together a nine to ten to twelve play drive
and score and limit Dak and the offense's opportunities. If
you can do that and jump on them early and
get out to a lead, put pressure on them, well
you know you never know TC says, come on, y'all,
Dallas is way better than Miami. Y'all are whistling in

(14:34):
the graveyard. Okay, yeah, Like.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
If you're asking me right now, I still think Dallas wins.
So but I guess what I meant.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Do you just want me to say that and move
on to Hornets preseason basketball? Dallas wins. Oh, we're not
Homers anymore. You know he's read. Dallas is just they're
better than Miami and it's not going to go Carolina's
way and what we've seen, the worst things are going
to happen. So let's talk about Oklahoma City Park? Do
you tonight in the preseason? You want to do that
most of your players not playing against the Hornets, which,
by the way, we're going to do that with Charles
Lee in about ten minutes. But yeah, you were breaking

(15:04):
down the ways this game could go. This is still
this is not you know, some juggernaut Dallas team. Brian
Schottenheimer seems to have done a nice job so far
with the Dallas offense. I'll definitely give him credit for that.
Dak Prescott's looked great, but they are still banged up
along the offensive line. They won't have ceedee Lamb and
this Panthers defense is seemingly playing better, Like this is

(15:27):
a game where Derek Brown has to wreck shop. This
is a game that I think Derek Brown can have
a massive impact along a lot of scrub and yes,
because you and I we haven't I don't think we've
talked enough about that kind of coming to fruition. What
we hoped we'd see from the combination of Derek Brown
and Ashawn Robinson last offseason when they signed Robinson to

(15:48):
put those guys together, and now they've got Bobby Brown too,
and they're all playing together. Like I do think that
for all to talk about pass rush and getting to
the quarterback and what are the edge rushers going to
get home and you know, start to rack up and
it matters. This is a game to me, we're in
the interior. They could really cause issues for both the
run game and the pass game for Dallas.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (16:06):
And of course, so we found out I think earlier
today that Princely Uman Miellen said the edge rushers had
a team meeting with our group meeting by themselves saying hey,
we got to get these sacks. Yeah, And we started
to see it last week against Miami. That offensive line
was beat up. This offensive line's beat up. There is
a chance to get some sacks and get home on
some of these guys now, and definitely with that, like

(16:26):
Dak Prescott's agile, but he's nowhere near as agile as
he was five six years ago due to the injuries
to his knee.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
And he was never really that to begin with.

Speaker 4 (16:35):
He's more like a fullback that wants to bow his
shoulder down and ram you down. But I think you
can get to Dak Prescott with all these injuries. It's
just my main concern is, all right, we saw what
you did last week against AH and you're going against
a different running game this week. Javonte Williams has been
arguably one of the more underrated backs. And this is
also a homecoming for Javonte Williams too. We got to

(16:57):
mention that as well. He's from North Carolina. He went
to school at North Carolina. This is his first big
opportunity to play inside his home state against his home team.
I think he wants to show up, probably with a
lot of family here too, so that's going to be
a factor in this game. And Javonte Williams has damn
near at five hundred yards already this year.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
I's thinking a phone call real quick, Michigan. Vic wants
to talk about this game. What's going on, Vic?

Speaker 7 (17:16):
How are you well? I'm doing all right, guys, listen,
But I want to tell you this is this game
is a perfect encapsulation of why I do not bet
on these games. Yeah, because literally this game. I texted
Mac and Bone this morning and told them I picked
Dallas thirty one to twenty seven because I do think
it's going to be a shootout. I think both teams

(17:36):
are going to be able to score, and it's probably
going to come down to special teams and turnovers to
determine a winner. But I just don't I don't see
Carolina being able to stop Dallas enough. But here's the thing.
Jack Prescott isn't perfect, and certainly even with Gihonta Williams
like you just mentioned, I certainly with Prescott back, he

(18:00):
can throw interceptions too. This is the kind of game
where either team could win by twenty eight, or it
could be just like you said, thirty four to thirty one,
you know, Barnburger. So for you guys, since I like
the two of you, I'm gonna say Carolina pulls it
out thirty four thirty.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
Ooh, all right, well, thank you. I don't know after you.
Thank you, Vick. I appreciate the phone call. You don't
have to do it for us. We're just entertaining all
of the possibilities. But for the negative nancies, yes, we
understand that this could go horribly wrong for Carolina, just
like it did at New England following a win. So
we'll find out. We'll talk some more about it, but

(18:37):
when we come back, we're gonna take more of your
phone calls. A little bit later, but we come back.
Charles Lee, head coach of the Hornets. They just wrapped
up a preseason bout with the Oklahoma City Thunder down
in North Charleston on Sunday to open up the preseason
against the Thunder and now they're in Oklahoma City for
preseason game number two tonight. Charles Lee will join us
from OKC Next Sports Radio ninety two to seven wf

(18:59):
and Z Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z
back on a Thursday, getting close to the weekend. Man
Football's back tonight, but so is basketball. Hornets preseason game
number two in Oklahoma City. Yes, it is that time

(19:19):
of year. Quite frankly, it's the best time in the
sports calendar. Hornets basketball getting geared back up and again
preseason game number two tonight right here on the flagship
station Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z Sunshine.
Sammy Farber on the call as always, and we always
look forward to that. But right now is promise we
welcome in and welcome back for the start of his
weekly conversation, the head coach of yours, Charlotte Hornets. We

(19:42):
got Charles Lee joining us from Oklahoma City. Charles Lee,
it's good to talk to you again, my man. How
you been.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
I'm doing phenomenal. It's always great to catch up with you.

Speaker 7 (19:50):
Kyle.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
Just got done with shoot around, So now walking back
to the hotel to keep preparing for tonight's game and
hopefully get a work out in.

Speaker 7 (19:57):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
I love it. I love it all right. So, how
was she around today? Coming off the first one and
just you know, continuing to start to build here in
the beginning of the season. How was shoot around? How
are the guys looking and feeling right now?

Speaker 2 (20:07):
Shoot around was very productive, you know, I think we
had a couple of really good days of practice to
be able to tighten up some things, continue to build
a foundation and implement some new offensive plays, implement some
different teaching points defensively, and then also to see where
we can improve as we go and play. Okay, see again,
So a little bit longer of a shoot around at

(20:28):
this time of year than we would usually do. Well,
we have to take take full advantage of the extra
time that we have right now.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
Okay, So I want to talk about preseason in Charleston
two for a second, because you were at North Charleston
Colisee in this past weekend. I got a lot of
friends there. I used to live and work there. I
did morning radio in Charleston, and one of the last
things I did before I took this job was I
was doing some play by play for the Citadel men's
basketball So you guys, yeah, yeah, yeah, So this ties
together nicely. I love the Low Country. I love Chuck Town.

(20:56):
What was that experience like for you guys and what
did your team take away from it?

Speaker 2 (21:00):
Yeah, beautiful city. We had an unbelievable experience. I think
the Citadel very accommodating to everything that we needed. The
spaces were perfect to be able to have a really productive,
intense competitive training camp. The food scene unreal, which is
why I have to work out so much today. But
I definitely.

Speaker 3 (21:20):
Preach best food, best food city in America, best food
city in America. If you ask me, I'm with you.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
I thought it was really good. So we were able to
build I think a little bit more camaraderie. There were
some smaller groups of dinners that went out, there are
some big groups of dinners that were able to go
out and just I think contained a bond because as
we get into this season, we all know that the
adversity hits and the teams that are able to embrace

(21:46):
the adversity and have a really tight knit group are
able to usually come through those things.

Speaker 3 (21:51):
All right, So I want to jump to something that
was sent to me. I hadn't seen this until our
buddy Rod Boone posted it. One of your guys sent
it to me. The annual NBA dot Com g Survey
is out and the results are really interesting. Here we've
got a couple of things to talk about. In the
which player is likely to have a breakout season in
twenty twenty five twenty six, Brandon Miller is tied with

(22:11):
Ostrier Thompson and Victor Wim Bayama for second. Overall. I'm
sure we'd all love him to be first, but obviously
it's great to see that kind of recognition and that
much of the league expects your guy, Brandon Miller to
have a big breakout year. Obviously, he was hurt last year.
What have we seen so far? What are you expecting
from Brandon?

Speaker 2 (22:28):
I'm expecting Brandon to have a really good year. I've
seen how hard he has worked during his rehab period.
Not only has he worked on his game, but he's
worked on like himself, the person, the leader. I think
that we just see a more mature, a more focused,
a more intentional basketball player and leader. He's done a

(22:51):
great job of continuing to stay engaged even as he
was hurt, and the basketball player on the court, as
we saw last game, he's like just scratching the surface
for what he can do. He's going to be a
really good two way player in this league. He has
the defensive mindset and the intangibles to really be disruptive

(23:11):
and guard one on one and go vertical at the rim.
And he took a charge last game. Just impacting. Winning
is always on his mind and I think it carries
over to defense, but also offensively. He's willing to do
whatever the team needs him to do in terms of
being a playmaker for himself. But he's passing the ball
really well, and you know, we're challenging him even to

(23:33):
crash the glass a little bit more to you help
us get a couple more possessions. And I'm just really
excited for him to unleash the total package of what
he's worked on on the court. But then also, like
I said, the leadership piece is going to be huge
for our team this year.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
LaMelo Ball then obviously going hard to believe going into
year six. I know we've talked a lot about his
offseason workouts and things like that. Recently he's spent a
lot of time injured, but when he's been out there,
he's been fantastic. What's the next evolution of me? Or
is that even the right way to put it? Is
there an evolution or is it more about keeping him
out there and fine tuning things.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
Everyone's an involving human being, Kyle, you and me both,
so yes, he's evolving, and I think that we saw
this summer he put a lot of time into the
weight room I think that between his mindstead of wanting
to get stronger, wanting to be more durable, with the
plan that was put in place by our performance staff,
he's added some lean muscle to him, and I think

(24:27):
that it's going to help him with the rigors of
the season. It's going to help him with all the
physical defenders that are usually thrown his way. I think
that he watches the playoffs and obviously has goals and
aspirations of being in those moments. And if you want
to be there, that level rises, and so your your
mind and your body have to be able to keep
up with that level and compete there. And he knows

(24:48):
he can do it, and so I think that he
pushed himself really hard with his body, and then I
think just his overall commitment to the court and consistency
took a whole other level. And so it's going to
be exciting to watch him and Brandon and Miles and
our our four rookies out there, and then the vets
that we added and who we were able to acquire.

(25:09):
I think Mellow is really going to reap the benefits
of having a really good supporting cast around him.

Speaker 3 (25:13):
Charles Lee, head coach, of the Hornets with us here
for a Thursday conversation in Oklahoma City Hornets and thunder Tonight,
game two of the preseason. What does what does Colin
Sexton bring to the culture of your organization, to your team.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
Energy, consistency, just a dog mentality. I love, just his
winning spirit and the competitive joy that he plays with.
It becomes contagious and infectious. He has already earned everyone's
respect on the team, in the organization as a staff

(25:46):
and front office. And so I think that anytime he
comes into your your team, or even just into your culture,
environment or building, he elevates the standards of competition, He
elevates the standards of headitive joy and passion. And so
we're really excited to have him and I think that
he's given our group a really big boost.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
So we were talking evolution there a minute ago. We
know it's a long term thing, but since kan Kak
Nipple arrived, is the fourth overall pick, through the Summer
League title, now, training camp and everything else. Is there
an area where you have seen the most tangible improvement
since he got to the straw at Hornets.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Yes, I think that his overall comfort level defensively and
offensively gets better and better every day he's in the building.
I think that defensively, he's starting to figure out angles
and physicality and concepts of how we want to play
and what we're willing to kind of sometimes live with.
And then offensively, the more he plays with all these guys,
he gets more and more comfortable about where he should

(26:43):
be on the floor. And I think that these guys
encourage him a lot of times to not only shoot,
but just to like playmake I think sometimes we all
get so focused on his shooting ability, but at the
end of the day, he's just a versatile player that
again wants to win, and he's one of a lot
of different levels in high school and in college, and
now he's trying to bring that same attitude and mentality

(27:04):
here to the Hornets, and I think that it's already.
We've seen it in a big way at Summer League,
We've seen it throughout training camp, saw it in the
last preseason game, and I know he's just going to
continue to infuse our culture with that winning mindset.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
Two quick things we'll get you out of here, speaking
of rookies in first rounders and the aforementioned NBA GM survey.
Liam McNeely tied for fourth on the rankings, of which
rookie was the biggest steal in terms of where he
was selected in the draft. So he's getting some love
as well. What have you seen thus far?

Speaker 2 (27:34):
Yeah, he deserves the love that he's getting. I have
really enjoy getting to see his growth and seeing the
energy that Liam comes in with every day. He is
so grateful and excited to have an NBA opportunity. I
think he's really excited about having it here in Charlotte,
and he's mixed really well with our group. I have
seen him defensively. Coach Hurley definitely put a competitive battery

(27:59):
in that man's bout in his body because he is
looking to be physical. I think that he gets in
there and he rebounds really well with his size and length,
and then offensively he shoots the ball. He can play
a little pick and roll. We've got to see some
pass aheads and he's driving and getting a piece of
the pain and kicking out two guys for threes. And
so he's really like a Swiss army knife. Is how

(28:21):
I keeps kind of telling people about him and this whole,
this whole group of our rookies, They're going to be
really special. But Liam definitely deserves all the credit that
he is starting to starting to get all right.

Speaker 3 (28:31):
Last thing, the five spot Musa Mason, Ryan Kalkbrenner. How
do you get the most out of these guys? What's
that rotation look like in your mind early in the season,
and you know, best case scenario, how does that group
play together, evolve together and help his team win games.

Speaker 5 (28:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
I think that each one brings something different to the table,
which is what excites me. It gives us the ability
to play a lot of different ways. I think that
they're going to continue to compete throughout training camp. We're
going to get to see these guys play some minutes
and prefeeds games, and at that point, Coach Lee's gonna
have a tough decision on his hands of which guys
are going to be able to playcause it's probably gonna

(29:07):
be too hard to play all three of them. But
I think that each one has really taken on the
identity of what we need from them in terms of
protecting the paint, but also dominating the paint offensively with
your offensive rebounding, with your ability to create spree assists,
and then also playmate from that painted area. And so
all three bigs do that, they just all do it

(29:27):
a little bit differently. So I can't wait to see
how things continue to play out through training camp in
pre season, but each will be awarded an opportunity to
showcase what they can help add to our team.

Speaker 3 (29:37):
Coach, we missed you. It's good having you back. Good
luck tonight. We'll do it again next week.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
I'm so excited to be back, Kyle, and you also
mentioned this is such a great time of the year.
I'm also rooting for our Panther boys this weekend, So
shout out to Coach Canalis and the Panthers. Let's go
get us another one.

Speaker 3 (29:52):
I love that, Ahi, buddy. We'll talk to you soon,
all right, thank you. Charles Lee, head coach of the Hornets,
Live from Oklahoma City. They got the fun tonight in
the preseason game number two, Aaron and Charlotte said, what
the heck is going on with the NBA preseason scheduling?
Why the Hornet's got to play OKC two games in
a row? That makes zero sense? Typical Hornets getting the shaft. Well,

(30:12):
I mean it's kind of we've seen this before. It's
kind of like a home and home in the preseason,
but instead for the Hornets this time it was down
in Charleston. The reimagining of the Spectrum Center continues, and
so they've still been displaced. They're not done reimagining things.
I suspect, so they play I'm sorry.

Speaker 4 (30:30):
I'm gonna miss that word. Once it's done in a
couple of weeks, is that what it?

Speaker 2 (30:33):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (30:33):
Yeah, because yeah, a whole Yeah, that's true. It's all
gonna be done in a couple of weeks.

Speaker 4 (30:37):
Actually, Actually, remember they get the training facility they broke
around on earlier. Yeah, so they've done reimagining inside a
Spectrum Center, but across the street they're not done. Well,
then again, what do you reimagine? Because you're just breaking
new ground. So I guess reimagining is is done.

Speaker 3 (30:53):
Are you Are you guarding your Hornet's loving heart closely
going into this season, Yes, because I think they can
be fun, just a fun team that kind of like
what they were a little bit during the Brego years. Okay,
where they could be punching above weight, maybe hovering around
five hundred at the best case scenario, worst case scenario.

(31:15):
I think it's about twenty five wins yep and injuries
galore for the fifty five fifty fifth straight year. I'm
hoping not.

Speaker 4 (31:25):
But I think that they've got some tangible stuff that
you could actually say, hey, you know that actually could
be a positive forest team Like Colin Sexton. I'm I've
never been more excited for a guy that they've traded
in a long time. Yea, and Colin Sexton's definitely that
Conkinipple to see is a rookie is going to be interesting.
You know, I don't think you'll have an instant impact,
but Liam McNeely down to the road this year, there's

(31:46):
gonna be a lot of guys to say, hey, just
not could maybe not be the year where you take
a massive jump, but it could be where you finally
see it kind of calmed down to the point.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
Like, oh oh, I just thought of a new segment
idea for the Hornets. You ready, massive jump or massive dump?
What did the Hornets take? Massive jump or massive dump?
Seven oh four, five, seven ninety six ten. Don't roll
your eyes at me. You know that's clever. Massive jump
or massive dump for the Hornets in twenty twenty five,
twenty six, what's your answer? On the text lone seven
oh four to five seven oh ninety six ten.

Speaker 4 (32:13):
I'm hoping massive jump. And you just kind of have
to think they got to have something good our way
at this point, right you would think, Yeah, with the
amount of talent like they have, like Brandon Miller coming
back into year three when he was on the court,
like he kind of he kind of petered out a
little bit, but he was still really good when he
was on the court last year. I think getting used
to a new style of Charles Lee, I think maybe

(32:35):
hampered his jump. In year two, Lamello when he was
out in the court, he was Lamello, and you just
hope he stays out of the court and it looks
like he's bulked up. New training staff that also I
think will help too, and just a rookie class invokes
a lot of positivity. And then you get a guy
like Collin Sexton to come into Oh and we haven't
even mentioned, Yeah, this is your third point guard, Spencer Dinwoodie.

(32:57):
That's another thing. You've actually got guys that are behind
LaMelo Balld. It's like, oh, so if he does go down,
it's not the end of the world. No offense to
some of the guys that have had to spell LaMelo ball,
but they just were barely NBA players. Okay, for guys
that are just trying to stay like Tao Maladon, for example,
who are you gonna take Spencer.

Speaker 3 (33:14):
Din with you? Or tay I allowed myself to get
a little excited about Tayl Mallet a couple of years
ago because he was so young when they got him,
and it felt like, you know, he really hadn't gotten
many opportunities prior to getting here, and then he got
here and it's like, oh, he might be a two
way player. He can defend, he can shoot a little bit.

Speaker 4 (33:30):
He thunder to let him go because they just had
so much talent right right right exactly. It turns out
it was actually defining and speaking of Thunder Trey Man,
Trey Man's back when he was on the court, we
were thinking maybe six man of a year potential.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
I just okay, so are you the back court? You
got LaMelo and Brandon starting at the one of the two, right,
you would think, and then you got what you got
Trey Mann and Colin Sexton coming off the bench together.
Or is Colin Sexton starting and Brandon's playing the three.
That's where you could go multiple ways about this, and
that's interesting.

Speaker 4 (33:58):
The only the only thing I'm definitely conn that we're
back to the concerning over the center position.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
Well, yeah, I mean you got Moosa, you got Mason,
you got the cok Blocker, you got I mean, listen,
you said that in the most PG way possible too.
Oh my god, I'm sorry, it was wildly inappropriate. All right,
there's a lot of nu Windo in this segment, massive jump,
massive dump, in the Calk blocker. I think if you

(34:27):
combined all three of these centers together, they make a
hell of a player.

Speaker 4 (34:30):
And I think Musa is a perfect number two center.
It's just he's too small to be a starting center
in the NBA.

Speaker 3 (34:35):
Correct, correct, Yeah, I'm with you on that. There's so
many questions about this team, like massive jump, massive dump?
Do you do you trust the five spot? Who's more
likely to be an All Star this year? Lamello or
Brandon Miller? Like who would if you had to put
money on one of LaMelo or Brandon Miller most likely
to make the All Star team in the Eastern Conference?

(34:56):
Where does LaMelo's been there? So he's probably the smarter
money then he's going to get the fan vote. He
probably going to get the fan vote. But the NBA
Annual GM Survey, as we talked about with him and
a little while ago, you know, they they've got they
voted Brandon Miller tied for second with Asher Thompson and
Wimby Thompson. I forget, it's it's all I just said.

(35:19):
I always go with Oscar Thompson. Sir Thompson, I forget.
I don't know where the sealabile goes. Sure, the emphasis
on the right syllabil I forget. But amen, Thompson was
voted number one on that list. But then you got
the other Thompson twin. You got Brandon Miller and Wimby
voted to be the breakout player in the NBA and
the Annual GM survey. So I mean, these are these

(35:40):
are good discussions, good good, Well I'll just go with
good discussions to have. But ye, look at the text line.
A lot of massive jump, A lot of people saying
massive jump on the text line. You look at it. Wow,
I asked the question, Now, there there have been one
or two people that are like massive dump until proven otherwise.
But yeah, I mean seven O four jump more app

(36:04):
hate Jump Bryant Massive jump seven oh four number broke
the rules and said minor bump. Okay rhymes, So I'll
count it, but you you didn't exactly adhere to the assignment.
Back to back. Dizzel says massive dump and toilet bowl stain.
Now we're getting graphic. Norman Raleigh says, until proven otherwise,
dump Andy and Concord massive jump, Bretton Charlotte Massive Jump,

(36:26):
PC load Letter massive jump all the way. We have
a lot of hornets off the US Marine Corp. Dave saying,
jump like Van Halen is what he said.

Speaker 4 (36:34):
Well, what that's not good if you actually know what
the song jumps about?

Speaker 3 (36:38):
Oh what is that song about?

Speaker 4 (36:40):
David Lee Roff got it inspired because he was watching
a man on like the Goldgate Bridge or something, and
he said, might as well jump, So that was about yeah,
kind of know that.

Speaker 3 (36:51):
Yeah, you nice news to me. I'm not a big
van Halen guy, you know that? True? True? My parents
are Van. I don't hate him. I just don't really
listen to Van Halen like that. All right, hit us
up seven O four five seven ninety six ten. Right
now we go to smoke on the headlines.

Speaker 4 (37:06):
All right, Kyle, I've got some Lebron James news for you.
This actually is somewhat important. Lebron James a sideline for
at least three to four weeks due to scatchy scatt ya.

Speaker 3 (37:21):
Sc i a stroke. What's going on over there? Scat scatta, scatica, sciatica,
siat Are you trying to say? Sciatica? Is that what
that word is?

Speaker 2 (37:33):
Bro?

Speaker 3 (37:34):
Sciatica on his right side.

Speaker 4 (37:36):
He is out to start the season and he could
be out for the Hornets game on November tenth.

Speaker 3 (37:43):
Sciatica. You have been trying to pronounce that word for
like five minutes, and I had no idea what you
were were trying to say? Sciatica? Man, I've had sciatica.

Speaker 4 (37:53):
It sucks paint affecting the back, hit and the outer
side of the leg.

Speaker 3 (37:58):
Who comes up with these words? What do you mean?
I just I got something to get off my chest?

Speaker 4 (38:04):
Doctors, Why do you come up with the dumbest, most
complex names for injuries and you're blaming for this?

Speaker 3 (38:10):
Yes, it's bro Come on, dudeatica. The pregnant women get ssiatica.
My wife had sciatica during all three pregnancies. I've had sciatica. Well,
I've had, I've siat had enough of this. Okay, that's lame.
When when when you're sciatic nerve and do you know
where it is? It's like right here on the side
of your butt cheek. Oh yeah. It causes a lot

(38:31):
of pain your lower back up and down. Your leg sucks.
It's awful. How big is the sciatica?

Speaker 7 (38:36):
Is it?

Speaker 3 (38:36):
Go all the way up? Just google it during the break,
Okayhaskasha for a moment. I'm like, is that Coscasha? I
fought for most of Castacio. Just go to break Sports
Radio ninety two seven w F and z oh massive jump,

(39:15):
massive dump, the cock blocker sciatica or Smoke pronounces it
Shaya shasha, trash sash. Yeah, Lebron has spatula, is what
we've learned. According to wd in OIB on the text line,
I have not seen many reactions on the text line,
like we just saw to smoke trying to pronounce sciatica.
We have one guy saying, give smoke a break. It's

(39:36):
only for pregnant women and dudes over thirty. He wouldn't
know about it anyway. Two more years, well yeah, and
then we had seven oh four number on the opposite
end of the spectrum, saying how old is this guy
not to know how to pronounce sciatica? Fire him? Good lord,
We're not firing people over Sayashia, okay, sir, I was
born in nineteen ninety seven, if that answers your question,

(39:58):
and Big Cat Dan pointing out the last hour this
show has been something else and that's absolutely true. Tomorrow
should be a lot of fun. We got great guest
stop and buy on a football Friday. We'll get you
set further for Panthers and Cowboys on Sunday. Don't forget
ten am Sunday WFNZ Doghouse powered by Jack Daniels, the
only pregame coverage you'll ever need and the only pre
game party you'll ever need. So come out and see

(40:18):
us at the Doghouse on Sunday morning. But right now,
we have to catch you up on what you've missed.
It's time for the rewind and we go back to
our number one. I guess technically our number two in
this case. Michael Felder, former tar Heel defensive back, East
mech Eagle and college football analyst on if he thinks
the UNC situation is salvageable. Given all that's gone on

(40:41):
this week.

Speaker 2 (40:42):
I don't know how you fix it unless, like you know,
I's that's a lie. That's wrong. I shouldn't have said that.

Speaker 7 (40:48):
I know how you fix it.

Speaker 3 (40:50):
It takes effort.

Speaker 2 (40:51):
Now you have to do that. You have to put
the effort into it.

Speaker 3 (40:55):
And that's the part.

Speaker 1 (40:56):
That's the question mark for me. That means you do
have to shake hands with everybody. That means you do
have to make their self available to.

Speaker 3 (41:03):
The local media.

Speaker 2 (41:04):
It does mean you have.

Speaker 3 (41:05):
To make yourself available to the boosters.

Speaker 2 (41:07):
You have to talk to them.

Speaker 1 (41:09):
You have to make them feel like they're wanted, right,
you have to make them feel like they matter. And
it's a rough.

Speaker 2 (41:16):
Spot to be in. And I literally am.

Speaker 1 (41:18):
In the middle of writing a piece right now where
I think we need to retire.

Speaker 2 (41:22):
The words this team is back. We also need to
retire sleeping Giants.

Speaker 3 (41:28):
Later in the show, Charles Lee hornets head coach from
Oklahoma City ahead of tonight's second preseason game and with
Brandon Miller, time for second in the annual NBA GM
survey of most likely breakout players for the upcoming season.
Here's Charles Lee saying he does in fact, expect a
big year three for Brandon Miller.

Speaker 2 (41:46):
I'm expecting Brandon to have a really good year. I've
seen how hard he has worked during his rehab period.
Not only has he worked on his game, but he's
worked on like himself the person. I think that we
just see a more mature, a more focused, a more
intentional basketball player and leader. He's done a great job

(42:10):
of continuing to stay engaged even as he was hurt,
and the basketball player on the court, as we saw
last game, he's like just scratching the surface for what
he can do. He's going to be a really good
two way player in this league.

Speaker 3 (42:25):
That's the rewind to look back into the show each
and every day as we wrap things up as a

Speaker 3 (43:08):
I will tip my cap to h ancient Greek physician Hippocrates,
who is credited with the first recorded use of sciatica,
deriving it from the Greek word issus for hip pain.
The term was then passed through Latin and Old French
before becoming common in the English language. So to Hippocrates,
we tip our caps to you. Back tomorrow for a
