Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Kyle Bailey Show, powered by Victory Chevy Charlotte,
where every month is Truck Month. Victory Chevy Charlotte, your
Silverado Destination, Power number three Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Ninety two seven w fn Z having a good time
on a Tuesday, still talking Panthers and Packers.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Plenty of meat on that bone.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Massive win, the biggest of the Dave Canalis era, although
it seems like predictably once again this week, the national
media is more focused on whether or not Green Bay
is fraudulent than the possibility that Carolina might just be
a good football team.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
So, you know, we live with that around here. It
is what it is.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
But right now we're talking about it with a guy
who knows this team inside and out. He's a Carolina
Panthers legend, color analyst on the Panthers Radio Network Hall
of Honor member and a good friend of the station
and the show. Jake Delom is back with us for
a five clock conversation here on a Tuesday. Jake, it's
good to have you, brother.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
How you been I'm great man. How are you guys?
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Well, we're fantastic and I figured you would be too.
Five and four feels pretty good. You know, I make
sure to tune in and I'm in the press box
for home games pretty much every Sunday. But I've got
you guys in the earbud, and certainly when I'm walking
up and down the street, and I love what you're doing.
I can feel your enthusiasm for this team when you're
on the mic. I mean, just sitting here at five
and four. Maybe relative to where you hoped this team
(01:28):
would be back in training camp. How do you feel
about where they are as a football team?
Speaker 4 (01:33):
Till very good about it.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
I remember in training camp, but you know, get a
ton of interviews, and I thought we were, Hey, I
think we're a seven win team, but can we all bounce.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Our way and let's get eight to nine?
Speaker 5 (01:45):
I just grow right continue group and just so down
after the first two games. It's like, my gosh, like
I know we're better than this and we just didn't
get to see. And so like when we're doing I
think we've gone kind of up and then we've gone down. Right.
The thirty one point lost of New England, twenty nine
point lost to Buffalo those two games.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Is kind of like we show something good and then
we go back down. But to go to answering.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
Green Bay and I thought that was going into the game.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
When you think about it, and.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
I always think about the big picture, the six I
played sixteen weeks. Right now, it's seventeen weeks, seventeen games.
That's a long season. Man, You're gonna have depths, You're
gonna have valleys. And we didn't play well no phase
of the offense. We struggled offensive legas.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Buffalo, our defense we didn't. We didn't play well, especially
our run game and special teams.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
We were off, missing extra point, just things like that.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
That's a flush game to me.
Speaker 5 (02:41):
And then Green Bay playing in Pittsburgh, Aaron Rodgers down
at half, come back, play fantastic in the second half
on the road, coming in late overlooking the Panthers. Panthers
have Philly. I mean they have Philly the next week.
I said, this is a perfect game for us, and
I think we did right from the beginning. Tracy Smith
telling Fanala, pay we win the toss, hit the ball,
(03:04):
this win's gonna play tricky, and sure enough, that's all
they talked about. Then you saw the wins all game long,
and that's what it came down to.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
But we just we played our ball.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
And what I mean by that we made it money
for them, right, they didn't like.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
What we were doing stopping the run. You know, we're
playing self defense. Yes, that's what this defense is, just
to make you drop field.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
It's just a big It's very different than the Tony
Dungee Tampa two, right, and that was always kenneck quarterback
just kind of not take the chance and just thinking
dunks down the field.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Well, we're a team. The thing with the Dungee.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
Defense, they were quick of the field. So a big
football team you could run the football and have success. Well,
we're big, especially with ninety five up front. We're a
big football team. And we played well and then offensively,
I don't think we threw it the best. I think
the weather might have had something to do with it.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
But Rico o'dodo, we got a running.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
Back that's on a heater right now and all the
different nations of online. We're running well, and we're calling
the right plays and Rico's powerful through the whole and
we're just a top of it football team. Unlike Philly
last year, where we had a chance to win late
in the game, well, we came throwing. We won on
the road against the quality football team. This is not
(04:17):
a football team that's struggling. This is the football team
that's a good football team with a good roster.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Love it. Now.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
You were on with Mac and Bone a couple of
weeks ago and you shared the story of Luke I
Guess during a break taking off his headset and remarking
to you about Dave Canalis's play calling right, And I
loved it. I mean, listeners, fans loved it. And so
you know, Buffalo, that stuff kind of goten forgotten because
that was an ugly game. But I think we were
reminded of that this week against Green Bay. And to
(04:44):
your point, Rico was awesome, Derek Brown was awesome, offensive
line good, tray Von Merrick, lots of guys played well.
But to me, and I'd love your thoughts on this,
Sunday was like, really about look at this coaching staff,
look at the preparation, look at the game plan. Like,
to me, the MVP of Sunday was Dave Kanalis and
Zero Vero and Brad Idzick right behind him. How much
(05:05):
did the coaching staff in particular prove on Sunday?
Speaker 4 (05:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (05:08):
I think you give you when you give players a
chance to succeed. Players understand that and they know that right,
so that gives.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
The coaches so much credibility.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
Whereas Dave said it last year, I thought he won
the locker room when he bench Bryce after Week two.
When you do something like that, the number one overall
pick from the year prior, when you do something like
and then I think it just he.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Did it again this week.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
Hey, Rico's gonna start, and Rico's gonna play. I mean,
we all know what Tuba means to this football team.
It still does. But he had to make a decision
what's best for this team, and that's exactly what he did.
And that's something that I think it wins over a team.
And sure enough, I don't know who came up with
the idea of switching the green dot from Rose Boon
(05:54):
to Trevor Wallace. They seem like different football players now
that they've swapped the roles, and that's just who calls
the play.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
They're playing so fast.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
And so and then I go back to Tracy Smith, right, Tracy, Hey,
let's let's think about maybe taking the ball if we
win the toss.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Due to the win.
Speaker 5 (06:10):
So when you give you your players that opportunity to win,
and players understand that you can coach the heck out
of them, You can coach the heck.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
Out of them, and you respect him and they believe
in the game, playing weekend and week out.
Speaker 5 (06:21):
And when players believe in it, that's that's a that's
a powerful that's very powerful.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Does Rico remind you of any of the backs that
you played with and and what I mean just in
your own words? What impact has he had on this
locker room?
Speaker 4 (06:33):
Oh, that's a great question.
Speaker 5 (06:35):
Oh man, maybe maybe the Shaun Foster type DeShawn when
he was healthy and he battled through so many injuries,
but he was he was fast. He was kind of slashy,
but he could run through tackles.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Uh, when he was really really healthy. But Rico watching.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Him play man, it's a that the first guy doesn't
bring him down.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
I mean he he.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
Goes through there, he runs behind his path extremely well.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Jake Tolone hanging out with us here on a Tuesday.
Let's go back to the passing attack. You know, Bryce
only I'm hearing yesterday. There's still some you know how
they are, there's still some haters out there. Well, you
know they won in spite of Bryce, he only threw
for one hundred and two yards. He had the interception
in the end zone. You know, I'd counter that, Jake
by saying, he just also pulled off his ninth game
winning drive of his career. Nine of his eleven wins
(07:21):
have featured game winning drives. He makes a lot of
big plays late, like how would you assess the way
that he in the passing game collectively played on Sunday?
Where is he playing well? And where can he get better?
Speaker 6 (07:32):
Well?
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Look, I think we're working progress, and that's okay.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
We're in year three, right, I mean, let's just look
at Daniel Jones, Sam Darno and Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Hey, do we want to truly rush a judgment right now?
On quarterbacks? Sometimes it takes a little time. Listen.
Speaker 5 (07:45):
I thought Bryce one decision the other day. I didn't
like the interception. I don't know if the ball slipped
out of his hands, the winds played a factor in it.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
I know that's not where he.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
Was meant to throw the football. It just it looked
funny when he came off of his hands. But other
than that, I think we were Bryce to me and
I thought it was evident against Buffalo. So Andy gets hurt.
What breaks the thumb? I think early in the game.
But when Andy got hit from behind and he fumbled
the football, that's not happening with Bryce. You're seeing him
step in the pocket, moving the pocket down the field,
(08:17):
and I stay down the field and make plays. He
made a couple of big first downs with his legs
the other day. That's kind of where I think we
need a lean into Bryce. And he's made some plays
in the pocket.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
I have to give him credit for that. He's made
some plays.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
But we're dealing with some young wide receivers still, guys.
I just I mean, McMillan's been great, and he'll tell
you I can be so much better. I think excel
it's that's still a work in progress. Now it's coming
Jimmy Horn. I mean, like Cocher's just getting undrafted free agent.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
He's just coming back. We're so young. I think Mitchell
Evans has been a fine for us. I just think
we're still a.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Work in progress that I'm not trying to put the
answer hide behind the answer, like.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
Yeah, we're not gonna throw it.
Speaker 5 (08:57):
I don't think we're gonna throw it for three hundred
yards that's not who we want to.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Be, and I don't think that's what we need to
be right now.
Speaker 5 (09:03):
I think we need to be a running football team
that can convert third downs and kind of stay on
the field and then we've got to convert in the
red zone. But we do know that our young quarterbacks,
when it's a big moment in the game, late in
the game, third or fourth down, whatever it may be,
he kind of his pull schools down a little bit.
That's one thing you have to admit. He's not afraid
to make a big third or fourth down play. Go
(09:25):
back to the Jimmy Horn his first game ever, throwing
the corner out to complete it on the fourth.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Down to enable us to go win the game a
few weeks back. Like the kid does a good job
in fush time. I think we're still a work in progress.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
And that's okay, that's okay. I'm with you now.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
You also just touched on something that I think takes
us back to about an hour and ten minutes ago.
NFL trade deadline passes. Panthers don't do anything, and you
just said it. This is a young team. There are
a lot of first and second year even third year
guys contributing, and in the two years preceding this season,
I think we all came to the very real realization
that this roster just didn't have nearly enough talent. I
(10:01):
mean it was obvious, and so Dan's been stacking it.
And I was completely fine with them standing pat at
the deadline. They've done what they've done with young contributors,
the guys who have been here. They're not looking to
be a super Bowl contender in twenty twenty five. I
think they're more looking toward next year. Were you hoping
they'd do anything of the trade deadline or are you
happy that they stood pat?
Speaker 5 (10:20):
I would have been surprised had we done anything, but
I think we would have been the recipient of Okay,
we're a team that's in a dumpster far we just
want to get rid of and Okay, so where we're
going to get somebody that had a connection to Canalis
somewhere in Seattle that somebody might have been there, or
(10:41):
somebody with the rams that EJ had, like our Dan
was with somebody. I thought maybe one of those but
would come up. But a lot of a lot of
it to me is like, but why we're playing these
young guys.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
Yes, we might have to live with a couple of
errors here or there. But watching Nick Gordon toy, it's unfortunate.
Princeley has a little ankle right now.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
But watching these young guys play, like, that's what I
want to see. I want to see more of these
young guys plays, and no, can we go?
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Can we move forward with them? Right?
Speaker 5 (11:12):
That's kind of I think I would have been surprised.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Have we made like a splash move?
Speaker 2 (11:17):
What I gotta ask about the defense? Two quick things,
We'll get you out of here.
Speaker 6 (11:20):
You know.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
You and I talked before the season, and we acknowledged
that Dan Morgan had come out and said, we're keeping
as zero evro, it's my job to get in better players.
Clearly Dan did that, and they got Derek Brown back,
which we all knew was a really big deal. But
even that feels like it was a little bit underestimated
because that guy looks like the best defensive tackle in
football through nine weeks. Just your thoughts on this defensive
(11:42):
turnaround and in particular, what Derek Brown means to that
room file.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
One hundred and three solo tackles as a defensive lineman
in twenty twenty three insane all time NFL records, like
the guy. We said it last year, probably on the show.
If he would have been a free agent and the
number one free agent right could have been a draft
pick where he was number six last year's draft, you
would have been the top two or three.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
Like this guy is a difference maker.
Speaker 5 (12:10):
I think we're starting to see Turk Wharton come around
a little bit. He battled a couple of injuries and
he's finally starting to kind of come around with what
you know.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
I'm disappointed in the Pat Jones. I thought Pat Jones
was a.
Speaker 5 (12:22):
Guy that I thought we kind of stole him in
free agency.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
He lines up an outside linebacker.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
He lined over the three technique for was against Miami
to get the final stack of pressure on two. If
my memory serves correct, that's I like. I like some
of the guys that we have in that regard. But defensively,
I think Dan knew, Hey, I had to fix so
on line two years ago. Now we have to fix
the D line. And that's how you went consistently in
this league.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
You can never have enough. Look what's going on with
our offensive line. You can never have enough guys.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
And you've got to continue to stack that because that's
gonna give you a chance to be in every game.
And I kind of like what we've done, and I
liked that they believe in some the young guys were playing.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
And what game was it? Was it after Arizona.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
When Canallis came out and said, yeah, we just we
got to start playing.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Some younger guys.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
I think it was Arizona, Like yeah, and you're starting
to see that happen.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
Youth is a youth's powerful man.
Speaker 5 (13:13):
Youth speak, quickness is very, very powerful in this league.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
It is all right, last thing in New Orleans this week?
You know them well, we all pay attention to what
the Saints are doing. And you know, I've certainly been
doing this long enough to know that you don't take
any game for granted in the NFL, certainly not with
a team that's young and still on the come up.
But the truth is New Orleans is a bad football
team and Carolina is favored for the first time this season.
And I'm curious what you think Sunday will look like,
(13:39):
both in terms of the matchup but the game plan.
It's a home game. I mean, the crowd's going to
be at Carolina's back. I mean, six and four would
be massive. What are you anticipating, Yeah, I would be massive.
Speaker 5 (13:48):
But I mean, listen, it's a division game. And I've
always said this, you never take a division game for granted.
One thing I think, and watching the film yesterday of
the rain Him Saints game, I came away with saying,
you know, this doesn't feel like when I'm prepared.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
When we were preparing to play the Jets, I just
felt we were.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
Better than the Jets and we were going to beat
the Jets. I thought offensively, they couldn't do anything, and
I just felt, we just get a lead and let's
just play keep away. Right, That's kind of what I felt.
I don't feel that with the Saints team. This Saints
team is not that bad of a football team. I'd
be very honest. I think defensively they have some pieces.
They traded away two starters on offense today and Trevor
(14:30):
pinning the left gard and they also traded away.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
Shaheed, so I'm not sure.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
I'm not sure what that does for a young quarterback
and Tyler shut but I thought they've handled him correctly.
He went through camp and he sat for the first
couple of months of the season to really and truly
kind of get in his mind what's going on. I
thought the kid played.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
Okay the other day. I don't look at this as
kind of a walk of a pushover game. This is
a it's still a division game. I don't think this
team is that bad, especially on defense.
Speaker 5 (14:59):
They've got some pieces on defense they really and truly do.
We just have to make sure we can continue to
establish our run.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
And our defense needs to show up.
Speaker 5 (15:07):
Make this team one dimensional, don't let them get started.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
In the run game.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
And I'm hopeful that's the case because they're going to
be replacing two starting offensive linemen in Pluaga, the first
round pick last year. He's out with the high angle sprain,
their starting right tackle in the left guard pinning.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
So you know this is a don't look ahead to
six and four.
Speaker 5 (15:26):
You got to go earn it throughout the course of
the week and then make it.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
Happen on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Jake, always enjoyable brother. Thank you for the time. We'll
see you up there on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
Okay, thank you, Kyle, Thank you man.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Jake Delone, Panthers Legend Hall of Honor member, Panthers Color
analyst on the Panthers radio network with us here on
a Tuesday afternoon seven oh four five seven ninety six
to ten, hit us up on the FanDuel text line
with your thoughts, big deep energy, Nick, I need to
enunciate when I say that name on the radio says
this team is going to win ten games and make
the playoffs as a wild card as long as Bryce
(15:56):
and Rico stay healthy. I really would have liked to
see them make the make them trade, make a trade
move for a cornerback because Mike Jackson ain't it But
I get it. Can't afford two superstar cornerbacks. There's also
a little bit of a shortage of corners in the
NFL right now.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
I mean that's the other thing. Like you, okay, you
point at me, you agree with this.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
I was listening to a really interesting podcast conversation about this,
I think last yesterday last night.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
But like, I don't know, it.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Just doesn't like the number of top end corners. It's
part of the reason why sauce Gardner went for the
ridiculous price that he went for to Indianapolis earlier today.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Like they're just not that easy to come by anymore.
Speaker 7 (16:31):
And you got Mike Jack on a very affordable contract
right now, and he doesn't suck, by the way, he
doesn't suck, No, is he I think he's I'm honestly
now starting to have a theory based on the last
six years, that any fan base will treat the corner
CB two as the worst player on planet Earth. Yes,
because this fan base ridiculed rightfully so sometimes and ragged
(16:51):
on Dante Jackson. But Dante Jackson became a pretty damn
good player. And what has happened since he left. He
had a good year in Pittsburgh and he's been very
good in LA for the Chargers. I just think sometimes
people get don't realize that they actually have something pretty
good with Mike Jack.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Does he have his weaknesses?
Speaker 4 (17:10):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (17:10):
Is he gonna get targeted, targeted more? Yes? Because Jac's
that damn good.
Speaker 7 (17:14):
It's very rare to have two extremely talented, legit number
one corners on your team at the same time. That's
what makes that twenty ten Jets defense so special, is
they had two lockdown corners on their team at the
same time. I just think too many people take Mike
Jack for granted, And you know, I just looked at
it doesn't help that he dropped that pick and he
(17:35):
ends on. But I just think, you know, people are
going too hard on him right now. And I also
think this too. The next few weeks are back to
teams that have wide receivers that I think fits hit
style more. He's not good against the speedier guys. And
now that they just traded Shaheed and they're going back
against the Falcons two weeks from now, I think this
lines up pretty well for Mike check because quickly, how
(17:58):
quickly Forday forget the first games of the year, he
was looking really, really good. He's come back down to earth,
but the first three games of the year he was
dominant almost Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Uh, wolf Pack James saying he's surprised that Alvin Kamara
didn't get moved as Oh, well, that's the Saints problem.
Speaker 8 (18:13):
Boy.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
Jake made some good points right there. Fuaga's down. Trevor
Penning just got traded. Rashid Rice got dealt. I mean
they heat the heat or heatcha heat. I'm sorry, not
the different guy. Ra heitcha heat, got dealt. Like, what
does Shug have to work with moving forward? Well, the
problem is a lave. He's talented, but he gets hurt
too much in his questions. He does have Kamara.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
This ain't the Saints of five years ago.
Speaker 7 (18:39):
Depf is I mean to depth is decimated right and defensively,
I think they have a couple of good like Brian Berzi.
I think could call some problems for the interior. But
he's not been the stunt. I think some people thought
he was going to be. Brandon Cook's healthy. I think
he's healthy, right, I mean, yeah, but he'll be a challenge.
But how old is he now? Pretty five? Didn't have
a big game against Carolina last year when he was
in Dallas, I believe so, Yeah, like he was.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
The main guy they went to.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
It's just yeah, it's it's hard not to look at
Sunday and think if Carolina shows up with the crowd
at its back at home, with momentum and confidence. I mean,
if anything could happen in the NFL. I mean, the
Saints have won a game. They did beat the Giants
earlier this year.
Speaker 7 (19:18):
Yeah, Brandon Cooks only has nineteen catches for one sixty
five this year and he's not been hurt.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
This is I mean, this is a game Carolina should win,
and I know that scares people to stay out loud
because it's been a roller coaster ride.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
But it's just a game you should win.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
And I know it's a division game and those are scary,
but you got to get to six and four on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
You need to beat this.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
If they were going to New Orleans, I'd feel a
little bit more concerned.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
Yeah, but you got to win this game on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
We'll come back. We'll take your phone calls. Now's a
good time. Sports Radio ninety two seven w f.
Speaker 9 (19:48):
Z in consicuous, ridiculous, let's win in that's set. See,
I'm from the South. Some of the most beautiful things.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Just this.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
Someone doesn't have come out.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
House thanks to Jake de Lowe, Panthers legend for hanging
out with US texter real quick. On a different note,
asked on the text line, hey is LaMelo playing tonight?
Speaker 3 (20:11):
He is not.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
LaMelo Ball's ankle impingement will keep him out for a
second consecutive game, and it is annoying to a lot
of you. That's been expressed on the text line already,
both LaMelo and Brandon already missing time just seven games
into the season.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
And I get it. We all get it. Around here.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
Good news is they found a way to beat the
Jazz without either LaMelo or brand In. Two nights ago
and tonight they visit the oh to six New Orleans Pelicans,
who are in a pickle organizationally, I mean just the
picks that they've given up and given away players they
could have taken. I mean, I saw a worldwide wob
tweeting about this the other night, Smoke asking if the
(20:49):
larger sports world knows what the Pelicans have done to
their own organization over the last you know, six to
twelve months, and it is.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
It's awful.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
And oh, by the way, Zion Williamson is injured and
he won't play tonight, So Pelicans fans have seemingly nothing
to look forward to these days.
Speaker 7 (21:04):
Yeah, and this is a more healthy's eyeon too, Like
he's completely slimmed down his body.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
Yeah, and so it's not even just a whole weight
concern with him now. It's got a jawline and everything.
Speaker 7 (21:14):
First time everyon see his Adams apple for the first
time exactly, so you know, that kind of shocked me.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
It sucks to see him get hurt again. He saw
it and wanted to put some caramel on it. And
need it. But anyway, go ahead. I'm sorry, that's badd Caramel,
I go back.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
It's one of those works that I go back and
forth on. But yeah, I mean, listen, Pelicans, Fad, this
is a game that you should be able to go
ahead and win tonight.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
You should.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
And this is where the depth is going to be tested.
I hate that it's going to be that it has
to be tested to this degree already this early in
the season, but it could could end up being a
blessing in disguise. And if they can find a way
to get to four and four tonight and hopefully get
LaMelo back for the next one or you know, the
one after that, then you're of course feeling better about things.
Brandon Miller, by the way, will not be reevaluated for
(21:58):
two more weeks, so as expected when the left shoulder
subluxation diagnosis came down when they were on the road
during that three game road stand where he got injured
on the first game that three game road stand in
Philadelphia on night one of a back to back. You know,
we felt then they said, well, we'll evaluate him when
we get back to Charlotte. Well they've evaluated Brandon Miller
(22:19):
and it's two more weeks until he'll be evaluated again
smoke and I said last week we didn't think we'd
see him again until Thanksgiving, and that's kind of what
it feels like right now.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
It's lining up for that right now.
Speaker 7 (22:32):
And you look at the average injury from uh I
forget which site conducted over the last thirty forty years,
when you'll get that same injury, it takes about a
time span of three to four weeks, So you know,
dat kind of lines up with what we've been thinking.
It sucks and unfortunately, I'm not mad at the Horns,
but unfortunately they've had to do this so many times
over the last couple of years under pr account.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
I saw everyone underneath to comments and quotes.
Speaker 7 (22:56):
Two weeks BS is still here again, Dad gummt And
hopefully that's not the case. But I think with this instance,
it's very usual and very normal to have this happen
for Brandon Miller. But I will say a good thing
for this week, and Sam mentioned it on the pregame
show on Sunday. Only two games this week after having
six games and nine days, so I think having two
(23:17):
games this week it being a lot more spread out
could help with the only injury front as well.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
Bag of Doughnuts saying the Pelicans are favored by four
and a half points tonight. I hadn't seen that yet.
I'm not shocked by that. I'm not. At some point
they have to get their first win, their coaches on
the hot seat. I understand why you might throw some
money at New Orleans if you were just a neutral
observer in this one.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
Yeah, no Brandon, no LaMelo. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
But I also think that some of this, like this
is a big night for Colin Sexton, for Conkin Nippule,
for Miles Bridges. Obviously, what do you also have to
remember they don't have Jijonte Murray until the New Year
because he's coming back from his torn achilles because he
was in that trade. Yeah, so they don't even get
to Johntay Murray back until twenty twenty six. So that's
(24:03):
that's gonna be kind of a struggle.
Speaker 7 (24:04):
And I will say I take a great joy, in
great glee in them struggling and they don't even have
their first round picks in the NBA. Can't rig it
again for a fourth time. Hey, hey, Adam Siliver, if
you can try to find this one, God bless you,
but you can't rig it for New Orleans this time.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Do we think that the NBA is just long term,
devoted and committed to New Orleans?
Speaker 7 (24:27):
How many times they've gotten the benefit of the doubt?
I know, I know, I know, even though they shouldn't
because that fan, but that city's never cared.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
Have you ever met a Pelicans fan in the wild? No,
so why should they get all the picks? Kind of
like meeting a person from Delaware. You know, most people
can go their entire life without meeting somebody from Delaware.
I think you can go your entire life without meeting
a Pelicans fan in the wild.
Speaker 7 (24:46):
I mean, that's why they made that joke in Wayn's
World about their lware, like what to do in Delaware?
Speaker 3 (24:51):
I don't know they did do that, didn't they.
Speaker 7 (24:53):
Yeah, there's only two things I think of when I
think of Delaware, or three things. Four things actually casinos
dover the race track, Joe Biden and Joe Flackel.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Okay, that's what Delaware has, all right, all right, we'll
go with that. Let's take a phone caller too. Cow
Herd is up first here on a Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
What's up? Cow heard.
Speaker 8 (25:16):
Man. You interrupted me mid research. I was looking at
who we had signed prior to fourteen and fifteen and
then the two and two thousand and three seasons, because
I think.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
We made a mistake.
Speaker 8 (25:29):
You know, our greatest runs have come.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
You know, what's his name?
Speaker 8 (25:32):
Stephen Davis was a free agent. Mike Wall was a
free agent. Jay Glom was a free agent. I think
Dan Morgan was a free agent, although I probably.
Speaker 3 (25:39):
I don't think so. He was the first round pick one.
Speaker 8 (25:42):
Yeah, I didn't think so, but yeah, yeah, I looked
at that. Huh. But then you've got Roman, Harper, had
jerich Ocawtrey Kirk, Coleman, Ted Ginn free agents. All I'm
saying is, when you've got something, this can be the
kicker to move you forward. And saft Gardner expensive with
(26:03):
the Dickens, but can you imagine him and JC on
the same dagumfield. It's expensive. I get it, but at
some point you got to put the pedal money. You
got to you got to put it down, and you've
got to take a chance, and you've got to say,
hopefully we get lighting in a bottle, Hopefully we do something.
You just can't kick it down the road every year.
I'm disappointed, to be honest, So.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
You're disappointed they didn't pull off a big deadline move,
but like, what did you?
Speaker 4 (26:27):
So?
Speaker 2 (26:27):
Are you comfortable with them being where they are right now?
Like in your version of this, giving up you know,
valuable future draft capital to make a run at the
playoffs this year.
Speaker 8 (26:37):
I've seen a lot of years of US drafting and
US looking back over the years and seeing that valuable
draft capital being not on the team and sometimes not
in the NFL years later. And so yeah, trade draft
capital for proven NFL talent, not potential NFL talent.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
Okay, all right, well listen, I appreciate the fall call.
Continue with the hardcore research and let us know what
you find. Cal Heerd schimon in right there.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
I just don't What.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Trade do you think would have vaulted this team into
not just playoff contention, but because that's where they are
right now. What trade would have made them a team
that you think is going to go to the playoffs
with a chance to make a run. What player did
you want Trey Hendrickson? Well, the problem is that would
be a rental you.
Speaker 5 (27:24):
Want to right?
Speaker 2 (27:24):
Did you want to give up a third for Jalen Phillips.
See I mentioned Jalen Phillips. You did mention James Sold
what he went for him?
Speaker 7 (27:30):
Like, holy crap, No way is Carolina making a move
now that injury prone guy who is talented but has
had injuries over his career and is on an expiring deal,
just went for a third round pick.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
I can't do that.
Speaker 7 (27:44):
No, that I probably turned Dan stomach about even thinking
about a trade, So.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
I get it.
Speaker 7 (27:51):
But I also think that that decision's going to have
to happen in the off season. Here, here's here's what
I say. Would you be happy if they signed Trey
Hendrickson in the off season?
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Would I be happy about it?
Speaker 4 (28:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (28:02):
Hell yeah? Three year deal? Yeah?
Speaker 7 (28:04):
Or you can go you can essentially go for Trey
Hendrickson now, or you go for him in the offseason
and hopefully he's this generation's version of Kevin Green in
free agency and then you enter next year with you know,
in your world, Trey Hendrickson what a dj Wanham.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Agent.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
Well that's true, but Escorton and Uman Miellen behind him.
Patrick Jones, Pat Jones, Right, you know, to go with
some version or some variation of Derek Brown Ashaan Robinson,
Bobby Brown, Turk Wharton.
Speaker 3 (28:31):
Yeah, I mean, I'm with you on that.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
Like, that's where I was not interested in them giving
up future first second was certainly not a first, you know, second,
third round picks unless there was a move out there
that would clearly catapult this team and to not just
playoff contention, but a team that can make some noise
in the playoffs. Like how many people First of all,
there are a lot of folks who don't think this
(28:54):
team is going to have enough down the stretch to
even make the playoffs. More people believe now than did
a couple days ago. But you know, even with that,
you think they might be able to make the playoffs
as a team coming out of a quote unquote bad division.
But what about when they get there? Okay, I'd rather
just get there with the guys they have, see what
they can accomplish, get them a taste to playoff football.
(29:16):
Know in the back of our minds that this team
is still young, still building, and that they've got cap space,
and let's be honest, too, an attraction level to come
play in this organization that has not existed here in
the last couple of years. That really sets them up
beautifully for twenty twenty six.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Look, I think Cowherd's on the right ship.
Speaker 7 (29:33):
He's just on the wrong part of the ship because
I think that the move's going to have to be
eventually made. I'm not saying you stand pat for free agency,
but free agencies where he's thinking of. I just don't
think a trade was out there unless you paid way
too steep of a price to make a move like that.
And we saw that the moves that were made were
because teams paid a massive, massive price. Two first round
(29:57):
pick for Sauce Gardner, I mean that is ridiculous, a
second and a first for Quentin Williams, Like, you really
had to stick your neck out to make these moves
at the deadline.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
It just wasn't worth it.
Speaker 7 (30:07):
That's why I say you wait until free agency and
then maybe supplement the roster to get the draft and
build the death up there for twenty twenty cents.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
Detroit didn't pop until year three. What did they do
leading up to that? They built through the draft. Heck,
they traded T. J.
Speaker 7 (30:21):
Hawkinson to a division rival in year two, and I
know they were one and six at that point. Different circumstances,
but people are like, why are you trading TJ. Hawkinson
to let alone trade them away? Yep, trade them to
the Minnesota Vikings. And you know it's actually worked out
for both parties in that situation.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Col Hurt has followed up to say he sent us
a list of guys that he would have liked. Quinn Williams, Cavon, Thibodeau,
Logan Wilson, Kalais Campbell, Draymond Jones.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
I mean Jones.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
Yeah, But like with Quinn Williams, you don't think that
what are you giving up? Like, who are you moving
out of that defensive tackle rotator? The defensive line rotation.
I'm not saying that he wouldn't help, but I'm saying,
what are you giving up to get him here?
Speaker 3 (30:58):
No, I'd love Quinn Williams, but.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
Everybody wants some other football team. Oh yeah, but what
are you giving up to get him here? And is
he a piece that imagines that that you know that?
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Really?
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Again, I'll keep using the phrase catapults this team into
a next level and next to echelon seven oh four five,
seven oh ninety six ten hit us up from the
FanDuel text line heat fans, says Dan and Company are
showing that they can hit on draft picks, so putting
previous regimes mistakes on this regime is not the correct way.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
To look at it.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Well, I go back to Bran Tillis too, the fact
that they've shown a lot of cap discipline, that they
haven't been willing to take the big swing yet, Brandt
wanted to clean up the books position them for the future.
You know, it can be frustrating, right. There can be
a little bit of short term pain for long term gain,
and we've seen some of that, but it's also now
been accompanied by real tangible visual growth and improvement. They've
(31:46):
got a winning record with the guys that they have,
and twenty twenty six looks like a big opportunity for them.
So continue to push, continue to run, try to win
football games in twenty twenty five, try to get to
the playoffs. I'm not if they get to the playoffs
this year and they get waxed in the first round,
I won't be happy about it, But I'm not going
to hold it against them because no one thought they'd
be here. But if you get there and get those
(32:09):
guys that experience, and then you're really beefing up and
set up well for twenty twenty six. The excitement level
will be through the roof for this team by the
time next training camp rolls around. So I don't like
waiting either. What's that phrase, uh, deferred gratitude, but deferred.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
Good things comes to those.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
Oh, yes, that's that, but it's a different phrase that
either way. Okay, deferred gratification.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
So that what I'm looking.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
I mean, there's there's an element of that where there
are good things happening, but you can hit the fast
forward button and ruin what you're building seven oh four, five,
seven oh ninety six, ten, hit us up on the
FanDuel text line. Right now, we go to smoke on
the headlines.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
All right.
Speaker 7 (32:51):
College basketball continuing tonight here in the ACC, specifically here
in Charlotte, the first ever Dicky V Classic taking place
right here in the Reimagine Spectrum Center as Duke takes
on the Texas Longhorns. This is the first game for
Sean Miller as head coach of the Longhorns, taking plays
(33:11):
right here in Seawott and john Shire entering Believe it
or not, Kyle his fourth year as head coach with
the Boozer Twins and with Isaiah Evans and a couple
of other returning Duke players, including Patrick Goungba. We're you
expecting tonight from Duke against a newly minted Longhorn squad.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
I expect Duke to win. I expect the talent to
be on display. I expect to be wowed by Cameron Boozer.
I expect Cameron Boozer to be the number one overall
draft pick. And I don't know if the listen. I
hope the Hornets are not in that mix, even though
some people are already talking that way. But I'm just
looking forward to watching that kid play all year long.
It's not just that he's a freshman phenom, five star
(33:49):
recruit with a ton of potential, also with a twin brother,
but I mean, look at the stock that he comes from.
Speaker 3 (33:54):
His pop's played there.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
He knows all about the program, the brotherhood, the expectations
like That's one of those benefits that's the kids of
you know, guys like Carlos Boozer do have, is that
he has understood all of this from a very very
young age. And I think he is poised to have
a monster season. And I know I'm not alone in that.
What else you got That's that's it.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
Yep, all right, we'll come back and wrap up the show.
Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z. Hey one final time.
(34:43):
Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z. Brian on the
FanDuel text line says, you can't tell me that if
Dan Morgan had traded for either Sauce Gardner or Quinn
Williams at that price, we all wouldn't be asking ourselves
if Morgan actually learned from Scott Fitterer's mistake. Let Dan
Morgan cook, damn it. That is from Brian on the
(35:03):
text line, and I agree with him wholeheartedly. Before I
sneak in a final phone call here, I do also
want to point out that Dan Morgan has been He's
been proven right multiple times on some controversial stuff.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
I'll start with the obvious one. Deontay Johnson.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
A lot of you killed him the day of the trade,
and then it became obvious weeks later that he was
a locker room cancer and they needed to get into
hell out of here, and that Dan was not dealing
with a robust market for a guy who was hell
bent on destroying locker rooms wherever he went. So Dan
was vindicated on that one. And do you recall how
many of you were texting in to tell us that
(35:43):
Dan Morgan was a blithering idiot for trading Adam Feelen
at the start of the season and that it was
going to cripple the year.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Well, as of last week.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Adam Feelin had five catches for forty seven yards on
the season. Fast forward another week, Adam Feelen still has
five catches for forty seven yards on the season. So
I realized the passing games not exactly in tip top
shape right now. But I don't think Dan actually traded
away a super impactful player. It would appear to me
(36:13):
that Adam Thielen is probably done in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
Yeah, but he's back home, so least of family's happy. Yeah. No,
it's not that they didn't want him either. They wanted him.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
They just can't figure out in that passing attack apparently,
how to use him. And I realize it's been bumpy
up there, like Carson Wentz had to start. McCarthy's been hurt.
I get all that, but thelin's done nothing in Minnesota.
So seven oh four, five, seven ninety six to ten
hit us up. I'm gonna have to give my deepest
apologies to Corn Cob Craig. Today, I don't think we're
going to be able to get to that final phone
call because we are up against it right now. We
(36:41):
have to catch you up on what you've missed. It's
time for the rewind.
Speaker 5 (36:47):
Spoke.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
Please pass my apologies to our buddy Corn Cob Craig
in Nebraska.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
We'll get to him tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Earlier in the show, Nick Carbony, NBC Charlotte Sports Director,
sports anchor back fresh off of paternity leave. He's a
brand new proud father. Here's Nick Carboni on the Panthers
not making a trade deadline move.
Speaker 6 (37:05):
Not surprised. I mean the NFL trade deadline has become
really really relevant, kind of like the Baseball trade deadline,
so I always equate it to that, and I kind
of look at the Red Sox this year, my team
up of course, where you're kind of in that sweener mode, like,
sure we could make we can make the playoffs.
Speaker 10 (37:20):
And that would be important for.
Speaker 6 (37:21):
Our franchise's development. But we don't need to sell off,
you know, we don't need to abandon any assets.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Along the way.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
Later in the show, Joe Ovious, Triangle influencer one half
of the Ovious and Julio podcast. Here's Joe on the
crossroads that NC State Wolfpac football is facing right now.
Speaker 10 (37:38):
But Dave's going to have an opportunity to have a
very Dave dor in the year.
Speaker 11 (37:41):
The rest of the way with winnable games against Miami.
Speaker 10 (37:45):
And Florida State. We know they'll be up for.
Speaker 11 (37:47):
That North Carolina game against Bill Belichick and they can
get to a pull after that. I think there's gonna
be a conversation between bookorg And and Dave Dorn about the future.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Of this program and the direction of it.
Speaker 6 (37:59):
And I'll say this to kind of at.
Speaker 11 (38:00):
My point in NC State, what's going out on ncctate
with Dave Dorn is a conversation that's going to take
place at around ninety nine percent of all college football.
Speaker 10 (38:07):
Programs, including your own blood Virginia Tech. What are reasonable expectations?
Speaker 3 (38:12):
What do we want?
Speaker 10 (38:13):
There's not as much money as you think.
Speaker 11 (38:17):
So I do think there's a recalibration of expectations and
what exactly do you want out of football That have
to happen at a lot of places.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Including enst the State later in the show, and finally,
Panther's legend color analyst on the radio network, Jake Delane
back for a five o'clock conversation, and here's Jake Dolone
saying he thinks people need to realize that this offense
is still growing.
Speaker 4 (38:37):
He's made some plays in the pocket. I have to
give him credit for that. He's made some plays. But
we're dealing with some young wide receivers still, guys.
Speaker 5 (38:44):
I just I mean, McMillan's been great, and he'll tell
you I can be so much better. I think excel
it's that's still a work in progress.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
Now it's coming, Jimmy Horn.
Speaker 5 (38:53):
I mean, like Cocher's just getting undrafted free agents that
he's just coming back.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
We're so young. I think Mitchell Evans has been a
fine for us. I just think we're still a work
in progress.
Speaker 5 (39:04):
And I'm not trying to put the answer a hide
behind the answer, like, yeah, we're not gonna throw it.
Speaker 4 (39:09):
I don't think we're gonna throw it to three hundred
yards every week. That's not who we want to be,
and I don't think that's what we need to be
right now.
Speaker 5 (39:15):
I think we need to be a running football team
that can convert third downs and say it's kind of
stay on the field and then we've got to convert
in the red zone. But we do know that our
young quarterback when it's a big moment in the game,
late in the game, third or fourth down, whatever it
may be, he kind of has all schools down a
little bit.
Speaker 4 (39:33):
That's one thing you have to admit. He's not afraid
to make a big third or fourth down play.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
Go back to the Jimmy Horn his first game ever,
throwing the corner out.
Speaker 4 (39:40):
To complete it on the fourth down to enable us
to go win the game a few weeks back, like
the kid does a good job in fushtime. I think
we're still a work in progress, and that's okay.
Speaker 3 (39:51):
That's okay according to Jake Delone.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
That's the rewind and look back into the show each
and every day as we karate, chop the microphone as
we wrap things up to you to get us wherever
you get your podcasts, Apple, Spotify, Google, just search the
Kyle Bailey Show, download and subscribe.
Speaker 3 (40:05):
We sure would appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
We go tipping our caps courtesy of our friends at Neogenics,
where they help heal joint pain naturally with no surgery,
no medication, no downtime. Go to neogenicsdemsales dot com. Smoke
what you got.
Speaker 7 (40:17):
I'm tip my captain Trevor Story has been a guy
that battled through injuries during his Red Sox tenure so far,
and he decided to opt into his contract instead of
opt out.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
Glad to see each Ovor Story staying with the Socks.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
I'm gonna tip my cap to the listeners today, in particular,
the Texters text line was great today, really really good stuff.
I had an all out, drag out battle with AJ
that ended amicably, because that's the only way that I
will end sports debates with our listeners. It always ends amicably,
So thank you, AJ, I appreciate it. We are back
tomorrow on this show, but stick around. Instant replay coming
up next all the good stuff you missed throughout the
(40:50):
day here on wf and Z. But stick around because
it's seven o'clock tonight. We return for Hornets pregame eight
o'clock tip in Nollins against the Pelicans for smoke clud
