Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Kyle Bailey Show, powered by Victory Chevy Charlotte,
where every month is Truck Month. Victory Chevy Charlotte, your
Silverado Destination.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z Hour number three
KB and Smoke emanating live from the Chandler Volta Studio
the Carolinas Personal Injury Lawyers. One call, that's all go
to cvinjurylawg dot com KB and smoke Free for all
five o'clock hour. Phone lines wide open. We'll take your
calls throughout the entire hour seven oh four, five, seven

(00:46):
ninety six to ten, and a quick reminder stick around
six o'clock. We go off the air a few minutes
before that, but at six we typically run instant replay.
We will again tonight, though it's a slightly different version
of it because Mac and Bone had a rip roaring
busy show this morning with conversations with Bryce Young, Dave Canalist,
Dan Morgan and others. But those three in particular you

(01:08):
will hear in the six o'clock hour if you missed
them on the Mack and Bone Show earlier this morning,
so make sure to stick around for that. Sweet Cheeks
is on the FanDuel Text line wanting me to give
you a nip a shin. She says that's every Southerner's
right of passage, so she's right about that. I will
bring you a jar, Sean. I got multiple jars of
white lightning at the house. They've all been given to
me as gifts. You can have one and do with

(01:30):
it as you will. Now, I will request that you
give us video evidence of the first time you decide
to take a nip out of that jar, and let
us know how cost. That's all. Just let us know
how it goes. Not gonna go well, but understood.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
The beautiful thing about Sean is too you can use
to disinfect wounds too, you know, among other things. So
it's nice to have around. You can start fires and
everything else. So we'll get that done. We have people
texting in who they think has the greatest swing in
baseball history. Big Cat Dan said Fred McGriff and Gary
Sheffield in particular. There's PSL Sucker pointing out John Olerude

(02:03):
had a great swing. That's a good one. Sid thirty
two sang Rod carew Jay Bird said Terry Pendleton. Four
labradoodles said Dale Murphy.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Wait, wait, Kyle, we're in Charlotte. We're not in Atlanta.
We can't be mentioning all these praise here in.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Atlanta, Charlotte. Yeah, if you missed Will's phone call yesterday,
they got the phone lines, or that the text line
fired up yesterday. So I appreciate the text coming in
on this seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten
hit us up. Now. I do want to get back
to the Panthers. They practiced in the rain today. I
did not attend. I left the house this morning intending

(02:38):
to go to practice, and then I got to the
city and realized I didn't bring an extra pair of shoes,
nor did I have an umbrella. I've also never owned
an umbrella. And US Marine Cordave texted in earlier and
said umbrellas are for women and children. Now he is
a marine. They don't do umbrellas, So that part I get,

(02:58):
but I'm gonna give it a shot. I got one,
So I'm I'm a tending joint practice tomorrow, umbrella in hand,
and smoke's coming with me. So we will have four
eyeballs on practice tomorrow. We will bring all of our
observations and notes to the air at three pm tomorrow
on the show. We've also found out today that Shadur
Sanders will get the start for Cleveland in the Panthers

(03:19):
Browns preseason game coming up on Friday. And for all
of our focus on the Carolina Panthers and how the
quarterback looks and the newcomers and whether or not the
defense will turn things around and get better, so on
and so forth, it's a big deal that Shadur Sanders
is starting on Friday, right. He was the big story
in the draft. I mean, cam Ward going first overall

(03:40):
felt completely overshadowed by the fact that Shadur Sanders slid
to the fifth round.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
Yees, well, a large part of that has to do
with mil Kuiper, but yeah too, Yeah, absolutely, and the
fact that I feel like there's been still more covers
of Shadur and training camp then there's been of cam Ward.
I think part of that has to do with the personality,
but it's also it also is still jarring to see
to the number one pick not getting talked about this
much in training camp when the only thing I saw

(04:05):
really get headlines was when he said the offense or
cam Ward said the Titans offense and somebody's practices has
looked really mid.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
That cam has wait. He said that he has the
offense in the offense. Oh okay, okay, okay, I gotcha,
I got you, which is still weird to see a
quarterback saying mid. It is a little weird. Although I've
grown to like cam Ward more and more like the
more I listened to him, the more I hear about him.
Our buddy Taylor zarz Aer is the new voice of
the Tennessee Titans. He came on a couple of months
ago to talk about that. I followed a lot of

(04:33):
his coverage. I've become a much bigger cam Ward fan
than I ever was. There was a quote from him
that I think he said, you know, you get these
reports about guys. Sometimes he's a first one in the building,
in the last one out, and sometimes that's true, sometimes
it's not. But apparently with him, he's in at five
am before everybody else in the building and the coaches
have to run him out, like he stays after the coaches,

(04:55):
watching film and everything else. And there was a quote
from him where he essentially said, you know, I watched
my dad wake up to go to a job that
he hated every day at four point fifteen am, you know,
to take care of our family. So if I can't
wake up and go to a job that I like,
I don't need to be in the NFL or something
along those lines. I just love guys with that kind
of work ethic and attitude. So I do wish him

(05:16):
the best. But anyway, the Shadur Sanders thing, you know,
it's a big storyline. Deshaun Watson is not going to
play this year. Deshaun Watson is not a part of
their plans in Cleveland. They drafted multiple quarterbacks, including Shador
and Dylan Gabriel. They just signed Tyler Snowpuntley earlier today

(05:36):
because they have multiple guys hurt at that position. Kenny
Pickett not available, Joe Flacco old right, So you know,
you got a bunch of quarterbacks in Cleveland. You could
argue they don't have one because of it. Although I
expect Shadur to get at least a couple of starts
this year, and he's going to start on Friday, and
it does I don't think he's lost his confidence and

(05:56):
far from it, as a matter of fact, but he
slid for a reason in the draft, and there were
people saying, you know he needed to be humbled, and
we had heard all of the talk of just the
bad stuff right the meetings that he missed and the
way that he turned certain scouts in front office executives
off during the interview processes at the combine and things
like that. But I I think he was always well

(06:19):
prepared for this because of who his dad is. And
I love this quote. He was asked, you know why
he has told his dad, Deon Sanders, that he doesn't
really want him to come visit him at Brown's training camp.

Speaker 5 (06:33):
This is what he said, that he wanted to come
here and see you.

Speaker 6 (06:37):
But you yeah, I told yeah, I tell him, don't come.

Speaker 7 (06:40):
And why did you say that?

Speaker 6 (06:41):
Because I mean, like I look, I look at it
at my own point of view, like I don't want
him coming to see me right now because I want
to I want to get to where I want to
go in for him to see me. I don't want
him to come and see me. You know, get a

(07:02):
couple reps and you know he's seeing like a good dad, Like, Nah,
you can't be proud of me right now. I gotta
get to where I'm going. And I know it's a
lot I got to do to get there. So it's
kind of like, I just want everything that I'm doing
is just like focus on this time, and I don't
want to know distraction because we know out of media,
we know how everybody will take it and take away
from the team just from him being my own dad

(07:23):
swing up, so you know, it's a gift and a
curse at the same time.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Great answer, fantastic answer to that question. And he sounds
like a young man who, like a lot of us,
was humbled by what he went through. We all get
humbled by things in life. It changes your perspective, it
changes your attitude. I think he's embracing being a pro
and he knows that he's got an opportunity to go
out there and take the job. Still occajun accentterested going

(07:49):
to Cleveland will humble you. Yeah, there's that too, But
I you know, from the Panthers perspective, Tomorrow, smoke you
and I are going to go out there and watch this.
Then we get to watch the full blown preseason game
on Friday. This is one of those times where we
talked about earlier in the show. We reach for things
to react to in training camp. We look for things
that are real. We look for big plays, individual performances,

(08:12):
trends that we can use to extrapolate or predict the
regular season. Some are true, some are not. We will
not feel good about the Panthers defense if they do
not perform well against Shedur Sanders and the Browns offense
right specifically the starter age. Yeah, there will at least
be some minor panic in Panther Nation if this defense

(08:33):
does not play well against the rookie Sheddurseanders this week. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
Yeah, I remember us being on the air the day
after the Carolina Panthers preseason game against the Bills when
Nathan Peterman led up the Carolina defense. It was def
Con one.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yeah it was. It was awful. I've forgotten about that.
Yeah it was. It was a perfect drive from Nathan Peterman.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
And this is after we knew about the infamous five
interception game, So it was one of those. I don't
know if the exactly it mirrord at, but it would
be very near to what it would be like. Man,
we're at this again.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Really, you can't get sliced and diced, right, you can't.
No mo play just said, what if Shaudur slices and
dice is our defense up. You can't get sliced and
diced by shaud Or even if I like I don't
want panthers, please do not put me in a position
to come on the air and be like, well, they
were working on situational stuff and you know it's not
that big.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
No.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
If you get sliced and diced by a rookie fifth rounder,
I don't care what his last name is, it's not good.
It's bad. It's really bad. Mccaukey just said, if the
starters make him look good, pants on fire level panic,
if the second string makes him look good, meh, I'd
agree with that. Yeah, I mean yeah, probably that. But like,
the defense cannot get cooked by Shaudur Sanders, and I

(09:49):
don't think they necessarily will. But I'm looking forward to
getting out there tomorrow and seeing what it all looks like.
Seven oh four or five, seven ninety six to ten.
Hit us up on the fan duel text line. Let's
go to the phone lines. Jersey Mike is first up
here on the five o'clock hour. What's up, Jersey Mike.

Speaker 7 (10:03):
Hey, thank you brother for taking my call.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
And I'll tell you that.

Speaker 7 (10:07):
Your door Sanders quote you made about Cleveland, will humble you.
I'm driving home and I lost control a little bit,
but I'm back on straight course again. That one got me.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
So what's going on?

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Hey?

Speaker 7 (10:23):
I want to respond to that greatest swing in baseball?

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Okay, I have one to put out.

Speaker 7 (10:30):
And I remember, I'm old school baseball purist.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
I was born in nineteen fifty.

Speaker 7 (10:35):
Seven, so I'm old school, and the best purest swing
to me is stretched Willie McCovey.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Ooh that man, I'm.

Speaker 7 (10:48):
Telling you, that is smooth and power. People feared him, man,
people feared him.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
I'm watching highlights right now. I got these up quick.
I haven't thought. I haven't watched any highlights of Willie
McCovey in a long time. God, you're right, look at that.
That's right?

Speaker 3 (11:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Yeah, I mean.

Speaker 7 (11:07):
And then being a Giants fan, I could throw out
Will Clark, will the thrill?

Speaker 2 (11:12):
So was that you de texted in Will Clark earlier?
Was that somebody else?

Speaker 3 (11:16):
No?

Speaker 1 (11:17):
That was somebody else.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
That's my number two. But Willie McCovey.

Speaker 7 (11:21):
You gotta look at that boy, because he was so
powerful and yet so smooth.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Well, now you're a Giants fan, so you've now mentioned
McCovey and will Clark. Do you put them both ahead
of Barry Bonds?

Speaker 1 (11:35):
Yes, yes, okay, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 7 (11:38):
I mean yeah, Willie McCovey, nobody as much as I
love Barry.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Bonds, because actually his dad is my.

Speaker 7 (11:48):
Favorite player, Bobby Bonds, who was groomed by Willie.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
May and Bobby Bonds.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Barry's dad's birthday is the same as mine.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
How about that, Jersey, Mike, You're the man, buddy. They
stay safe out there on the roads, no more swerving.
All right, we got we gotta hear from you again
down the road seven O four five, seven ninety six ten.
The Jedi from Mount Holly says, Ken Griffy Junior. Big
Mike said, Ken Griffy Junior. Lots of Tony Gwyn, lots
of Tony Gwinn, bag of doughnuts, the latest to hit
us with a Tony Gwinn. Those are really good. Mark

(12:20):
Grace just came in from Rick on Lake Norman. How
about that? Back to the phone lines, Michigan vic is
up next, Michigan Vick, what's up?

Speaker 3 (12:28):
Well, I'm gonna give you one quick, beautiful swing in baseball,
Even though I quit rooting for the guy after the
steroid scandal.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
But Raffie L.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
Palm merrow Man, what a swing?

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Oh he was phenomenal. Did have you ever seen did
you watch him play a Mississippi State? By any chance?

Speaker 3 (12:44):
It's been so long. I mean, I know he played
there now that you mentioned it, but I don't remember specifically.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
That's fine. The only reason I brought it up. I
just was thinking, like you know, I watched some of
the I think there was a was it a thirty
for thirty on Missisippi State story?

Speaker 7 (12:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (12:56):
I mean I remember thinking that his swing, somehow is
swing a Mississippi State was even prettier than the swing
in the big leagues. For some reason it changed a
little bit. But I love your answer, pal merrow is
a great one.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yeah, gorgeous swing.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Now let's get back to the Panthers.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
Okay, two things about the Panthers. One, as far as
the Shaduur Sanders thing, Even if Shadure plays well against
them in the preseason game, it's too early to worry.
They have got to get so much continuity on that
defense after that, you know that bleep show they had
last year. I'm not gonna worry about anything until I

(13:32):
see it when they start in Jacksonville. But the big
thing you mentioned this I think last week about what's
the realistic expectations, and I think they must win seven games.
They could win ten, and the difference is going to
be two stretches of the season. The first is they
cannot lose all three of those first four games on
the road.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
They got to get at least one.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
Of those to get off to a decent start, because
in November they play five games, three road game and
the last two are a terrible conbo. They got Monday
night in San Francisco and then come back on a
short week to play the Rams, So they're gonna lose
basically a full day of prep time before they face
the Rams at home after they were already in San

(14:15):
Francisco a game. Let's be honest, they probably lose. They
could win, but realistically you wouldn't bet on them to
beat San Francisco Monday night in Levi Stadium. So I
think the key is you got to get to a
good start.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
Can't go on in three on.

Speaker 3 (14:28):
The road to start the season, and you've got to
make sure you get through that November stretch without being
just totally strained by that point, great.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Call, buddy, I appreciate you. Hope you're doing well. Be
safe out there. I was thinking about that that San
Francisco game a couple of days ago, you know. Mom
My mom was like, hey, let's plan a trip, and
I'm like, hey, football seasons here, that's tough for me
to do. I don't have many weekends. But I was like, hey,
they have a bye week here. I think it's the
first week of December. And then I was like, well,
they got a Monday night game here against San Francisco,

(14:57):
so maybe we can go somewhere then. But then I
started thinking about that game, and I mean San Francisco
humiliated the Panthers a couple of years ago and it
got Matt Ruhle fired.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
Yep, and that was probably arguably one of the worst,
if not the worst fan takeovers.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Oh it's horrific. I mean I was in the press box.
It was humiliating. Are you afraid of San Francisco this year?
Do you fear San Francisco this year? Somewhere Wes Bryant's
out there clenching his fist right now, waiting for me
to say something offensive or stupid, but like, I don't know.

Speaker 4 (15:28):
I expect him to be a tough out. Don't get
me wrong, I wouldn't be. I expect him to be
a tough out, yes, but I'm not, you know, clenching everything,
no demand kind scared to death about him, right like
that was more of the chief game for me last year.
That was I'll be honest, I'm more scared at the Eagles.
I was more scared of Eagles last year than I
am of the forty nine ers this year.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
I agreed.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
Now, if they somehow get healthy and Rock pretty takes
another step forward, you know, maybe Den all right, okay,
but I'm not at that point yet.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
And here's the thing.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
I hate to be a Debbie downer in this situation,
but it's kind of been the story of his career
at certain times. Sure, Christi McCaffrey is going to be
healthy playing.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
At him, of course not now. You can't be sure
of that. You really can't. All right, seven oh four, five,
seven ninety six ten, free for all five o'clock hour,
welcoming your phone calls, whatever you want to talk about,
and in particular, if you want to weigh in on
the conversation. We had to start the show. Who is
the most disrespected individual in Charlotte sports history, the athlete, coach,

(16:25):
front office, executive, media member, whoever that you think still
does not get enough credit to this day or is
disrespected unnecessarily seven oh four five, seven, ninety six ten,
We'll talk about it all. Sports Radio ninety two seven
wfn Z.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
In conspicuous, ridiculous, that's playing and that's it.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
See, I'm from the South.

Speaker 6 (16:48):
Some of the most beautiful things come out my out
and now those days, Yes, this someone doesn't have time
out of my house, so as well give them something to.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
Sports Radio ninety two seven f n Z KB and
smoke hanging out, having a good time. A text a
minute ago, is no mo play, he texted in it
is the first time he's nervous. This nervous about a
damn practice, referring to Panthers and Browns and shouldure Sanders
as QB one not on a depth chart, but this
week for the preseason game in the practice, Kenny Pickett's hurt,

(17:20):
Dylan Gabriel's hurt, Joe Flacco's old Tyler Snoop Huntley was
signed by them this morning, but Shauduur is getting to
start on Friday, and I expect he'll get the first
team reps tomorrow at training camp. Now it's supposed to
rain cats and dogs tomorrow like it did today, and
we'll see the extent to which that impacts practice and
what it looks like, how much good work they get done.

(17:43):
But you know, there are a lot of people saying
that man if Shadure Sanders, a rookie fifth rounder, comes
out and carves up the Panthers defense in practice, it's
going to be a full blown Code red level panic
for Carolina Panthers fans. And whether or not it should be,
I guess, you know, only find out down the road,
but I expect that it will be if the defense

(18:04):
does not look good against Shedur Sanders. By the way,
Dave Canalis on with Mack and Bowe this morning, they
asked him if he gets more out of scrimmages or
preseason games.

Speaker 8 (18:14):
I think we sell the guys everything counts. They're always
telling us something, you know, whether it's verbally or nonverbally.
We're gathering information about our players. I got to give
Jeff Brown some props. He's our director of football operations
and he and I, you know, work together, but he
really mastermined the scheme and the out the kind of
the layout of the scrimmage to make it feel like

(18:37):
a preseason one. You know, we had a full pregame.
We brought the guys out, we did the pregame warm
up type thing. We had a thirty five minute half.
We took him into the locker room, split him up, talked,
came back out. The energy of the fans, I mean
thirty five plus thousand people when we came out of
that tunnel, I mean, it was pretty special to hear
the noise, to hear the excitement, you know, and to

(18:58):
give them that kind of snapshot. It kind of felt
like Savanna bananas.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
You know.

Speaker 8 (19:02):
It was like running cloth or rolling. The music was
going the whole time, you know, it was. But Jeff
did a great job of orchestrating it. I was glad
to throw different situations at our guys, at our coordinators,
and it was a special event and the fans really
made it come to life, all right.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
So again that you know, you heard the answer right there.
One thing Dave did say this morning that I thought was,
I don't know, not everything can be interesting, but I
thought it was a good look at last year versus
what we're seeing so far this year. And that's the
level of physicality. It's not just that, like I think
that comes with the personnel, the roster upgrades, who they

(19:38):
brought in, the difference in size, that's something that if
you missed it, Brenton Berson was really emphasizing yesterday on
fn Z. He talked about having been to practice a
couple of times. Brenton bursa good luck not versing, but no,
I know, I'm sorry, Buck my bad man Buckner.

Speaker 4 (19:55):
Wow, that's the first time Briton person's gotten mixed up
with Printon. My god, that's fine.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
I heard it a minute. I was like, that's not right.
But Buck was all the back and bone and he
was like the first thing he noticed to practice was
how much bigger this team is. You know, they look bigger,
they look more physically imposing. And with that should and
we hope comes an increase level of physicality. And Dave
said that he felt like his team simply fell short
in that arena last year.

Speaker 8 (20:24):
This is what I've always wanted. This was a standard
that I was preaching last year. We didn't capture it
as a team. So as we kind of went into
this off sne because you know, once again in the season,
you start to pull back on a lot of the
you're not doing a lot of full contact, but Wednesdays
are padded up in their physical practices. We really started
to establish our style of football kind of through the

(20:44):
second half of the year, and then we stopped practicing
in pads basically for the last four or five games,
but we really started to find our style. We came
into the spring and a Jarro our defensive coordinated a
great job of setting the standard of the physicality that
we wanted as much as we can handle without pads
in the spring. We come into camp and that was

(21:05):
a challenge to the whole group was guys, I don't
want you to run by and tag off with two hands.
I don't know if you made that tackle or not,
And just yelling at guys challenging him was like, I'm
letting that go.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
That's a first down. I don't know if you made
that tackle.

Speaker 8 (21:19):
We're gonna get into preseason and regular season games and
we're gonna see bad tackling in the secondary all across
the NFL. Let's not be that team. I need you
to get your body on somebody, wrap your arms up,
so I know, I don't want you to take them
to the ground, but I want to know that was
a tackle.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
And Dave's been preaching physicality, not just that answer. He's
been preaching it at practice. You can see it in
the way that his team has been practicing. And then
the fact that FanFest the other night, like he wanted
them hitting each other, he wanted a physical practice. I
think the only restraints he put on those guys were,
you know, we're not wrapping guys up around the legs.
You know, we got to take care of each other,

(21:54):
but take care of each other below the waist pause.
But like he you know, he's been pre this physicality
and you can see it reflected in the way they're
practicing and the way they structured FanFest. Now another interesting question,
and if you missed the interview this morning, you're gonna
hear the entire thing coming up during the instant replay hour.
But he was asked by Mack and Boone I forget,
which asked him this if, having coached Russell Wilson in Seattle,

(22:18):
if he sees similarities between Bryce Young and Russell Wilson.

Speaker 8 (22:22):
Not really, I think that they have similar issues you know,
in terms of just depending on where the line slides,
I can't see, you know, I'm six' one and I
can't see when I'm back there, you know, So it's
like there are challenges that way. I think the similarities
that I see in the two guys is high belief
in self, high confidence, high resiliency, you know, the bigger

(22:45):
the moment, these guys continue to be the same. They
maintain that level of execution, and those are some of
the things the similarities that I see. And really of
the great players that I've been around, they have this
common denominator where regardless of the moment, they continue to
perform at their top and they stay even throughout the
whole thing. And so I think probably those are the

(23:06):
things I see a similarit.

Speaker 2 (23:07):
Yeah, all right, that's good stuff. You like to hear that,
Jack said. I hope Bryce doesn't turn out as corny
as Russ. Me too, I think we all think that.
But you know, Russ goodball. Like Russ. Russ could play
one of the prettiest deep balls we'll ever see in
the NFL. And there are some people that hate admitting that,
and that's fine. I get it. You hate Russell Wilson.

(23:28):
But there are you name me five better deep ball
throwers in the history of the NFL than Russell Wilson.
You can find it, but it's gonna be pretty hard
to find him. I don't think you can. So you know,
that's an area where I think we're looking for Bryce
Young to take a step forward this year, and they
brought in all that weaponry to do that right, to
increase and elevate that that portion of the offense. I'd

(23:48):
love it if Bryce became the deep ball thrower that
Russ was now real quick. Last thing from Dave speaking
of Bryce and the offense, you know he was asked
by Mack and Bowe about his level of comfort calling
plays for Bryce now versus let's say a year ago.

Speaker 8 (24:04):
I honestly can attribute it to the guys, to the
leadership on our team, but also to our staff. I
think that the difference that I feel is I come
in last year with ideas and an expectation and trying
to set a foundation. I feel like I'm not the
only person preaching that philosophy. I feel like I have
the backing and support of our leadership on our team,

(24:27):
of our staff, of our organization that everybody understand and
knows what the expectation is.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
Every day.

Speaker 8 (24:33):
Every day is a championship opportunity, and that's the way
we approach it. That's the way we work, and we
can't accept anything less. And so for me, I think
I feel more settled knowing we're all grasping this mentality
in this philosophy.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
All right, That's one of the things that I know
I'm looking most forward to is hopefully a continuation, because
I do think we've seen a good bit of it already. Smoke,
maybe maybe you have some thoughts on this, But down
the stretch last year from Denver on right from Denver
to what was it New York? Then New Orleans or
was it New Orleans in New York? Yeah, sorry, Denver,

(25:07):
New Orleans, New York. With each passing week, it did
seem like Dave was opening up the playbook. As Bryce
got better, and as Bryce got more comfortable, Dave got
more comfortable giving him new things, running new place, different place,
you know, more layered route combinations, you know, the things
with more nuanced pre snap you all know what I'm

(25:29):
talking about. We saw it last year, and you know,
on the one hand, it impressed me from a Dave
Canalis standpoint that hey, he's got this stuff in his bag,
this is his offense, this is great. Can they come
out of the gates running that stuff in week one?
Do they, you know, come out of the gates running
everything in the bag? I don't know what you'd be
saving stuff for because I think it's critically important for
this team to get off to a good start. But like,

(25:51):
that's one of those things that I'm looking forward to.
A run the football. Well, you stay committed to that,
but be are you going to let Bryce? You know,
are you being honest? Do you trust him to the
extent that you're going to use everything at your disposal
and your playbook because you feel like he can do
it all at this point. Yeah, I definitely think that's
more of the case. I don't know if it'll be.

Speaker 4 (26:11):
I don't think they'll just run trick plays just to
run him, but I think they'll have him in the
background to have just in case. And you know, we
definitely saw once you got to November December, he was
definitely a lot more comfortable getting all these different routes
and schemes. That's when we've really saw a lot of
you know experts, guys that breakdown film, guys like Brian Baldinger,

(26:32):
and some of the guys that are you know, like
on Underdog Fantasy, the thirty third team are starting to
really notice, like, hey, you know, Dave Canalis, his route
concepts very unique. You didn't hear that stuff in September.
Definitely did not hear that when Andy Dalton was playing.
But by the time you got to late November early December,
we were starting to hear more and more of that.
I think part of that was because he had more
confidence in Bryce, but I also think part of that

(26:53):
might have been the fact that he was getting more
into a groove himself as an offensive play caller. Because
as much as we mentioned this last if here was
only a second full time year as a play caller
on offense, that's still relatively new, especially when you're a
head coach and you have all those responsibilities on top
of you. So I think it was an adjustment period
for him. I think we're going to have a more

(27:13):
open playbook, not only for Bryce but for him as well,
because this is the year three.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
Yeah, seven oh four, five, seven ninety six, ten. Uh,
Let's take a phone call, Cowboy Sean apparently wants to
talk Panthers Browns. I also want to know if Cowboy
Sean thinks that that Mikeah Parsons is staying in Dallas.
Cowboy Sean, let me start there. MICHAEH. Parson's gonna stay,
Jerry gonna sign him? What do you think?

Speaker 1 (27:32):
Oh, unfortunately, we'll sign them about forty two million. But
it's just it gets old. It's been getting old for
ever since emmittt Smell back in the early nineties. Jerry
and Steve and they need to stop that. But you know,
once again they'll be looking outside in or whatever inside
out when it comes to not making the playoffs or

(27:53):
choking in, choking in the playoffs and all that. I'm
happy that you door is starting and all that, and
KB be real you and smoke. You know, Chador is
not a fifth round pick. You know that. I understand
the circumstances. It was fabably had to do it a
different way, so be it. But you know he's easily

(28:16):
a top ten pick and everything. And number two, well, no.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
He's quite literally a fifth round pick. I understand you
think he's better than that, but he is literally a
fifth round pick.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
But he is literally a fifth round pick. But Tiatifo
was number sixteen for dinner. He can throw rocks out
of a bard, mister bricks. Trabisky was picked over Deshaan
Watson and Patrick Mahomes. Your point being, sir, I love
the state.

Speaker 2 (28:41):
I know, I hear you. Look you think he's better
than a fifth round pick. You are not alone in that.
Plenty of people do. But I do have to point
out too, there were many scouts who thought he was
a mid round talent. So there was a wide range
of opinions on Shador Sanders to.

Speaker 1 (28:54):
That true, But I'm just saying, though, perfect example, what
did JJ mccathey do at Michigan to say, here's the
ball one? What did he do at Michigan all they
did win the Nationals?

Speaker 3 (29:04):
What did he do the game manager?

Speaker 1 (29:07):
But he got picked that high. Just think about that
just a little bit, sir.

Speaker 2 (29:11):
Sure I talked you right, called into to defend Chadura.
I guess yeah, like I told you all back in
the draft. Tie like during the draft, I like the kid.
I like the player. I don't love him. He's not
bigger than average, he doesn't have an above average arm.
He throws a nice deep ball, but like there's nothing

(29:33):
special about his traits physically dure that is.

Speaker 4 (29:36):
Yeah, I viewed him as a third round guy that
was getting hyped up as a first round prospect.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
Yeah, but that doesn't mean he's a third round guy
that he succeeded with a with a below average offensive
line at times for sure most of the time. Yeah,
but like he was still thirteen and twelve yeah, as
a starter. Like I don't know what to tell you.

Speaker 4 (29:54):
I mean, that whole process just got ridiculous, especially when
you had to hear mel Kiper every single minute. If
you're watching the ESPN broadcast, it got ridiculous. Ironically, when
the Browns took Dylan Gabriel, it's like, Okay, come on, really,
Dylan Gabriel Overdre do.

Speaker 2 (30:12):
You by the way, sidebar, do you have a point
you want to make?

Speaker 3 (30:14):
There?

Speaker 2 (30:14):
Am I interrupting you? I want to ask you a question.
Have you have you seen the reports of of JJ McCarthy,
like in Vikings Camp, Like apparently they're still working on
trying to develop touch because not everything has to be
a ninety mile an hour fastball. It's like, man, that's
the kind of stuff that I would think should be
worked out at the college level. I never got the

(30:35):
hype with him as a pro prospect. I just maybe
Kevin O'Connell and that offense proved to be the Shanahan
offense where the system's the star and you know you
can plug quarterbacks in it. Maybe because you have star receivers.
Maybe that's what we find out this year. But will
you be shocked if it turns out that they made
the wrong decision and should not have gone with JJ McCarthy. No,

(30:57):
I won't to either.

Speaker 4 (30:58):
I will say though, if he does crash, this is
in my opinion, this is a pretty good year to
crash and burn potentially well with the quarterbacks coming up. Yeah,
didn't get Kyle to twenty twenty seven?

Speaker 2 (31:10):
Classes go all right? Seven oh four or five seven
ninety six to ten? Hit us up on the fan
duel text line right now, we go to smoke on
the headlines, all right, First quick bit of NFC South news.

Speaker 4 (31:25):
Did ten Bay Buccaneers have gotten some much needed help
to back up Baker Mayfield in case something happens, as
they just signed Eddy Bridgewater to a one year contract
as he will likely be replacing Kyle Traska's quarterback number two,
which never forget the Buccaneers spent a second round pick
on Kyle Trask.

Speaker 2 (31:43):
I thought Teddy was done done, Like I know, he went,
he went and won a high school championship in Florida.

Speaker 4 (31:47):
Wherever was that thing with the Ayrold suspension or something
like that.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
I mean, good for him. I'm never mad if guys
want to keep playing. I'm not in any way up
said about this. In fact, it probably makes them a
little bit better, yes, which I don't love. But I
just I thought it seemed like Teddy was done done,
But apparently not.

Speaker 4 (32:04):
No, he is not, and it looks like they're going
after Panther reclamation quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
So PJ.

Speaker 4 (32:09):
Walker, keep your phone on in under NFL news, this
was just completely wild. They're in the NFL Networks Training
Camp broadcast of San Francisco forty nine ers training camp.
George Kittle crash to set to break news that NFL
has banned smelling salts and ammonia packets as of today
that they send out in a.

Speaker 2 (32:29):
Memo, Why why are we banning smelling salts?

Speaker 4 (32:33):
Some people are accusing them that they could specific specifically
the ammonia packs that they apparently can protect from concussion symptoms.

Speaker 2 (32:45):
Oh you mean they can mask? Yeah, all right, so
you're so by using Okay, that makes I don't know
the science behind that. Yeah, you're talking about the ammonia packets. Yeah,
is the allegation true of the the same one of
the smelling salts? I don't know. But smelling salts I
know are strong. George Kittle said he used them every
single tribe.

Speaker 1 (33:06):
Football. Guy.

Speaker 2 (33:07):
Have you ever hit a smelling salt before? No, but
I've seen someone They are intense, intense.

Speaker 4 (33:12):
I've literally seen someone paul flat on their ass after
smelling a smelling salt when they were sitting down.

Speaker 2 (33:18):
Okay, so the FDA noted that they have the potential
to mask certain neurologic signs and symptoms, including some potential
signs of concussion. I mean, I guess this makes sense. Again,
I don't know the science behind it. Maybe somebody who does,

(33:39):
can you know, verify or confirm whether or not they
think this is a good idea. But what happened on
it were all the good stuff, man, right, that's it.
We're losing all the good stuff words of Michael Irvin.
We're losing recipes. I love watching dudes hit smelling salts
on the sideline. Never forget when Adam Gase did it?
Is college football? Get a band these things too? Bet

(34:01):
or not? High schools? That damn yeah? Now do you
just slap people across the face? What do you do?
I mean it worked for John Henderson. All right, well,
come back and wrap up the show. Sports Radio ninety
two seven wfn Z Brian says watching football players get

(34:38):
absolutely zouited out of their minds should be considered a
minor American pastime. That is in response to the NFL
banning smelling salts and ammonia packets as of today, the
claim being that they mask certain concussion symptoms, which I
guess we can't make light of. But a smoke said,
and I think rightly, so what happened to the game

(34:59):
that I love? That seems to be the overwhelming reaction
online right now. And I think we can all you know,
acknowledge that there are more important things at play here.
But man, I love watching dudes hitting smelling salts. I
just I looked it up on Amazon. I get I
can get a tub of smelling salts delivered to the
studio for twelve ninety nine on Amazon Prime, and I
feel like I should I have an obligation, nay, a

(35:21):
duty to order those and leave them in here for
the morning show like I want. No, I need Mac,
Bone and Fiddy to hit the smelling salts at five
point fifty nine before they take the air at some
point this week. Should I order the smelling salts for
the morning boys? Yeah? And if I do that, will
you take a smelling salt before the show? Yes? And
you can record me doing all right, well, order order

(35:46):
Scent twelve ninety nine. That's all it takes. I got it.
We're good.

Speaker 4 (35:51):
I will say nothing is funnier than not the players
hitting the smelling sauces, but when the assistant coaches who
are not even in the game start hitting the smelling salts,
or even like Adam Gase like he did there in
the preseason.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's good stuff.
All right, Well yeah I can uh yeah, all right,
we're gonna I don't I'm signing Mac and Bone up
for something they haven't agreed to. I was gonna say,
I don't think Mac needs it, he doesn't need it,
but I want to know what happens when he does it. Like,
I want to know what Max sounds like at six
am having just hit a smelling salt before the start

(36:22):
of the show.

Speaker 4 (36:22):
Six ams when he's most he's most feisty too, so
that's gonna be even more interesting. Okay, it says two
day delivery, so I can get him as early as Thursday,
meaning Friday show.

Speaker 2 (36:31):
It's perfect. We got the game day Friday, Max joining
me for an abbreviated version of Countdown to kick offf
We can hit the smelling salts before the pregame show
on Friday. I'll do it with him. It's gonna be awesome.

Speaker 9 (36:43):
All right.

Speaker 2 (36:43):
We got to catch you up in what you've missed.
It's time for the rewind.

Speaker 1 (36:50):
Now.

Speaker 2 (36:50):
I just got to tell Mack and Bone what I'm doing,
but I did. I just ordered it. And my wife's
not gonna be happy that I'm wasting money on silly things.
But hey, talking about you know, it's it's not up
to her, all right. I don't know why I said that.
I'm going to get divorced later tonight. Earlier in the show,
Nick Carbony, NBC Charlotte Sports Director sports anchor on Tedall

(37:12):
McMillan's up and down training camp so far.

Speaker 7 (37:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (37:15):
I mean, you know, we had a lot of national
media out there today and I don't think it would
have been anything that made their headlines.

Speaker 1 (37:21):
Right.

Speaker 9 (37:22):
Sometimes it hasn't even made ours. Instead of up and down,
I would kind of go down and then up and
up and you know, maybe flatten and then up.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
I think he's getting better.

Speaker 9 (37:30):
I think he's progressing.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
I really do think.

Speaker 9 (37:33):
The physicality of the pro game has been something.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
That he has really had to adjust to.

Speaker 9 (37:38):
And he told us that last week, and that's what
his coach, Dave Canalis told us. But think about who he's.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
Going up against.

Speaker 9 (37:45):
It's not just jac Horn, it's also Mike Jackson in stretches,
and even Corey Thornton, this undrafted kid who's got some
link to him. He's not going to face that every
time out on the field. He's not going to get
covered by every team's big corner. And even Mike Jackson
told us to like most teams have like a big
guy and a little guy. Not everybody's got the links
and the size of the corners that the Panthers have.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Later in the show, Joe Ovius Ovius and Jilli O
podcast Triangle influencer. And here's Joe on how ESPN's new
deal with the NFL network will have a massive domino
effect on the rest of the sports world. This is
a sign to everybody that is not named.

Speaker 3 (38:23):
The NFL that these expected.

Speaker 5 (38:26):
Paydays for your next media righte steals are not going
to be what you think it is, because we feel
that the thing that puts us over the top, the
thing that.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
Is truly part of our survival, is.

Speaker 5 (38:37):
This NFL and that's why you'll get eighteen games and
Roger Goodell will continue to have the price the brick
go up. So I think that's the thing I'm looking at.
What does it mean for everybody else that the NFL
and the ESPN are getting in bed together, And I
don't think it's I don't think it's a good future
for everybody else.

Speaker 2 (38:53):
That's the rewind to look back into the show each
and every day is a reminder to get us wherever

Speaker 4 (39:14):
Tip my cap to Joe Ouvius for rightfully going after
all the Rex Sports League's parents across the country, in
the world. He's absolutely right and he was preaching to
the choir.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
I'm gonna tip my cap to Dave Canalis because I
just I believe that guy is authentic. I think he's
that way all the time. And when he walked off
the practice field today to the podium and looked at
the rain soaked media with a smile and said, what
a gift this day, What a gift. I think he
meant it. I really do. We're back tomorrow, looking forward

(39:45):
to it. Until then, for Smoke Ludwig. I'm Kyle Bailey
