(00:51):
for a late appearance in the show today at five
point thirty, typically with us in the three o'clock hour,
but given the news of Matt Campbell to Penn State,
which I still don't think is a fit official, but
looks to be on the goal line of being done.
Matt Campbell, Iowa State head coach to Penn State is
what everybody's expecting at this point. They had to do
some emergency CBS Sports television and some Cover three podcast work,
(01:14):
So Chip coming up in about twenty seven minutes, so
stick around for that right now, though we Welcome in
and welcome back. Nate Wimberley WBTV Sports Director, Sports anchor
in studio every Friday here on the show. What's going on?
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Brother?
Speaker 5 (01:26):
How are you? Hey?
Speaker 2 (01:27):
What's going on?
Speaker 5 (01:27):
Now?
Speaker 3 (01:28):
You know it's a bye week. Kind of feels wrong
to not be previewing a Panthers game, but no shortage
of things to talk about.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Hey, it comes at a good time for him.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
I think this is a very good time for him
to get JC Horn hopefully back before this playoff push.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Now, I'll come back to that in a minute, but
I do want to start with the high school football
news today. First things first, I've mentioned this a couple
of times today. We've had people text in. It's obviously
big high school football news. One of the power programs
in the city. West Charlotte Lyons football head coach Sam
Grinder will not return following another playoff appearance. This has
been again one of the heavyweights in high school football
(02:02):
around here. Great coach not coming back. What do we know?
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Uh, this is gonna be this potential to be pretty
substantial for West Charlotte. We're kind of digging around and
we can't haven't confirmed anything yet. We're hearing some stuff
and we're not gonna really go with it until we
actually confirm it, but this could this could be pretty
substantial for them.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
But man, what a what a uh.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
It's it's gonna be a I hate this for Sam
and I hate this for West Charlotte because he's really
trying to turn this program around. I mean they're really
going through like seven years of just just just bad
football of not West Charlotte football, and he kind of
got this thing turned around and pointed in the right direction.
And you know, man, Wes Charlotte's one of those it
is a power program. You know, you go back to
(02:45):
Bruce Hart and Tom Knott's Pete Gilchris Maury's Flowers and
Aaron Brand. Then they went through a five year lull
and then they hired more Collins, who kind of turned
this thing around and was getting it in the right direction.
And he passed away suddenly, and then that's when they
went through that seven years, you know, just slump of
bad football income. Sam Grinder leads him to a state
championship last year, won the conference title this year, made
(03:06):
it all the way to the regional finals, and you know,
you know when West Shallote is good. High school football
is good in the city, and everybody just independence is
the same. You know, it's just those traditional programs, and
I you know, I really, I really love the fact
that West Charlotte got back. I hope the next coach
that they get can keep this thing going because history
(03:28):
says you make the wrong call or to make the
wrong decision on the coach and a program like this
can go right back down. But you know, I hope
that they can get everything together there at West Charlotte.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, I don't know. Sam Well. I talked to him
before our broadcast of the Keep Pounding Classic earlier this year.
I think it was my second conversation with him. Nice guy,
energetic guy, obviously well liked by his players. So you know,
not not going to make any assumptions here, but the
fact that he's gone certainly raises a lot of eyebrows.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Absolutely, it does, all right.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
So we had some games moved up in the high
school playoffs last night. One of the things that jumped
out to me was Grimsly beating Weddington last night and
face on Brandon back on the field. So after missing
all that time, he's back making and impact in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah, but look, Wednington lost thirteen to seven. They got
behind thirteen or nothing, and they didn't got a defensive
touchdown in the third quarter from Katie Cotton, who transferred
from West Charlotte to Winnington at the middle of the season.
But the fact that the Weddington offense couldn't get it
any points on the board yesterday, that's the shocking thing
(04:27):
to me. I felt like they could go and score
some points, and I knew their defense they held winning.
I mean, they held Grimsley the thirteen points. That's pretty
with fase on Brandon on the field. You holding them
the thirteen points, you like your chances of winning. But
the Wennington offense just couldn't get going and they're done
for the second straight year. Same team knocks them out
to the playoffs at the same round. So Weddington back
(04:47):
there knocking on the door, but once again they can't
get over the top because of the Worldlies of Greensboro.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Grims still the weirdest mascot name that I'm aware of.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
It's one of my favorites, along with the Fighting Scotts
of Scotland.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
I'm not hate.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, loved those two names.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
To one of that game I did earlier in the
touchdown Worleys and I'm like never said that before. Anyway,
you had that one and Crest Yeah last night, thirty
nine to twenty one over Hickory.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
I went to that game last night. The thing that
cost Hickory in the first quarter, they were in the
red zone twice and had to settle for two field goals.
Chris got in the red zone twice in the second quarter,
scored two touchdowns. They were down there. They were up
twenty two to eight at the half. And you know,
Chrism as much as Chris gets credit for their offense
at Eli Hamrick, who signed with Virginia on Wednesday, their
(05:37):
defense was outstanding because Hickory likes to hit you with
the deep ball and that that sudden that those big
chunk plays that the Carolina Panthers don't get a lot
of until these last few games. But they held Hickory
from They kept Hickory from getting those big plays and
that really kind of just shut down the Red Tornadoes
offense and Chris with a very impressive victory there at Hickory.
(06:00):
Hickrey has hosted the regional final for three straight years,
and they lost last year to West Charlotte.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
They lose this year to Chres.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Of course they wanted the first year and went on
the Winnter State championship. So there's seasons over, but a
very impressive win for Chris and much kudos, a lot
of kudos to that Kris defense.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
All right, So a natural pivot then or a segue
from Cres to Shelby tonight. Right, Shelby and Lincolnton tonight
combined twenty two wins between these teams, which isn't a
shocker given the stage of the season that we're in.
But eleven and three Shelby eleven and two Lincolnton tonight.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Yeah, these two teams been in the regular season with
Lincolnton winning in overtime thirty five to thirty four, and
that that was kind of a shocker to me.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
But Lincolnon's been playing well off season long.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Coach Angle has done a great job with the team,
led by quarterback with Shaw Lynch got two great receivers,
one of them is his brother R. J. Lynch and
Trishatt Lineberger. But you know, Shelby is on a roll
right now with land Format quarterback, thirty five hundred passing touchdown.
I at thirty five hundred passing yards, forty six touchdowns,
seven interceptions. And the thing about Shelby right now is
(07:04):
normally they're always good, but the last three weeks they've
been on the road in the playoffs. They beat East
Rutherford sixty five and thirty four. They beat Mount Airy,
who's one of those traditional powers, forty one to twenty one,
and went to Eastern Randolph and won forty three to
forty one.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
They're doing all of this on the road. Because of
the RPI. They're good.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
They should be probably ranked higher than what they were
in the seating process, but because of the RPI, they
are where they are.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
They don't care. They're just going everywhere and they're winning.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
And you know, I really think they're gonna get some
payback to night against Lincolnton, but I think it's gonna
be a pretty good game.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Though I do too so Shelby Crest, and then I
guess a trip up one fifty with some additional turns
we get to Maiden tonight. And the notable thing about
that is too is that, as I mentioned, you get
to the stage of the year and everybody's got ten, eleven, thirteen, wins.
Here's nine and four Maidens still alive visiting Brevard tonight.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Because the reasons for that is they were in one
of the toughest conferences in the state. You know, they're
in the same conference with Hickory, they're in the same
conference with East Lincoln. They got upset by Newton Connor,
but they their losses were against some great five eight teams. So,
you know, Maiden led by Grant Loaning the quarterback, twenty
three hundred passing yards and twenty seven touchdowns, six interceptions.
(08:12):
Shannon Wingott, you know, smoke over here knows about Shannon
Wingott used to be at North Lincoln. Now he's at Maiden,
running the ball pretty well. Sixteen hundred yards and twenty
one touchdowns. You know, they're just rolling right now. Coach
burn is doing a good job there. But the Bravar
thirteen and oh, but you know the thing about that
is I looked at Bravar schedule. I'm like, they really
hadn't played anybody, you're thirteen and oh, but it's kind
(08:32):
of you know, you know, you beat a cy Rummers, Okay,
they were kind of down this year, So you know,
I look at the teams that Mayden played. They're battle
tested playing those better teams in their conference, and I
just think Maiden's got a real good shot of going
to Brevard and that's a long ride to Transatlanta County,
but I think they got a good shot of going
out there and getting upset tonight.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Anything else we should know about HGH school fotball this weekend?
Speaker 1 (08:56):
What TAGA plays tomorrow. Their game was supposed to be tonight,
but because of the you know, Northern Gildford, I think
they went to Remote Learning, which all after school activities
are canceled, so they couldn't travel with Tago to night.
So that game is tomorrow at six up in Boom.
But with TIGA's looking to make the state championship game
for the first time since nineteen seventy eight. Wow, I
(09:16):
was four years old. It's been a long time for them.
But they're playing some good football. Their defense, they're live
by a pretty good defense there, and they're offensively, they're
they're pretty stout too. Northern Gildford is undefeated, so that's
no I'm sorry they've lost two games. I'm sorry with
Tiger's undefeated, but it's gonna be a pretty good game tomorrow.
Up in boone, dressed very warmly because it's gonna still
be co all.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Right, we got Nate Wimberley WBTV in studio with us
each and every Friday. You've already upset some Panthers fans
on the text line, Well, you know, fluke chuoke, he said, tell,
why is Nate throwing shade at a team that swept
his tweety birds? Panthers are three too against the Falcons
in twenty twenty five. Let's see seven oh four number.
Tell Nate those Panthers he was knocking down beat his Falcons.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Ass.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Okay, so we're getting a little spicy heer as we
go here on the fan duel text line. In all seriousness, though,
bye week, you're right, yeah, I don't think anybody felt
weeks ago that. Man. Sure is nice to have a
week fourteen by, but given what just transpired against the Rams,
this actually is turning out to be a great time
to have a bye week.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Absolutely, and you know you can get hopefully you get
Christian Roseboom back at middle line inside linebacker to paradem
with Trevor Wallace. I mean, like this is it was
perfect for them, I think, you know, because they are
playing so well, you're seven and six, you know, yeah,
you would like to probably keep this momentum going. But look,
they needed to just kind of just push the reset
(10:31):
button just a little bit, just take a step back.
And I think this is gonna benefit them as they
get ready to take on these next four games, because
they should have some fresher legs than Tampa Bay, who
they're gonna be battling with. And I think, really, to me,
the only route to the playoffs is winning the division,
and you can control your own destiny and that you
win them all you're going to You're going to the playoff.
(10:52):
You're gona win the division. You gonn winn, You're going
into the playoffs. So this is the place you want
to be. You control your own destiny as far as
the division race go. You don't need anybody helps do
what you're supposed to do. You go into the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Yeah, no, And so much of it is about, you know,
what the quarterback does his next several weeks. It's about everybody.
It's still the ultimate team game, but it's about the
quarterback too. I could tell you wanted to say something
right there, but I'll throw in. You know, there's been
a lot of talk this week that you know. Dan
Grasiano was in the press box on Sunday for the
Rams game. I actually noticed him when I walked in.
It's like, uh, dance here. I wonder what that's about.
(11:24):
And it turns out he was there to do some
digging and reporting, and he wrote a piece on Monday
where he said he expects the Panthers to pick up
Bryce Young's fifth year option, which some people ran with
as a report and it's not that. But I think
at this stage four games to go. Obviously the narrative
can still change depending upon how he plays, but I
think right now it's safe to believe that Carolina's planning
to pick up the fifth year option.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
I would think. So, I mean, it's you got to
kick that can down the road. I don't think you're
ready to give him a big extension just quite yet.
And I and the thing I wanted to insert right
there is I think it Dave Cannas's game plan and
Bryce Young's play kind of go hand in hand. If
the game plan is not good, if it's not solid,
you're not gonna see the best of Bryce Young. So
(12:04):
I think it's they're one and the same to me
is how what's the game plan? Are you going to
run the ball efficiently and effectively? And you know, and
I said this last week, or you know, I hope
those fourth downs like fourth and three and fourth to one,
you are aggressive in those situations. On Sunday, you played
(12:25):
like you had nothing to lose, which they didn't. You
only thing you got to do is to lose a game.
But if you win this game, it's a big win.
And they went out there and played like they had
nothing to lose. Is that going to continue when the
division titles on the line, If you're getting there against
the Bucks, are you gonna go for that chunk play
on a fourth and three when the division's on the line?
And that, to me, that's all game plan? I mean,
(12:47):
like to me, I think they kind of go hand
in hand. So rice success is going to have a
lot to do with what is the game plan for
this week? And it changes from week to week with
Dave Knas, But it shouldn't. It shouldn't.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
I think I think we're at a place where it
shouldn't anymore.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
Now.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Obviously there are extenuating circumstances, but you know now that
you've got a healthy Cuba and a healthy Rico and
this offensive line.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
Man.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
You know, I continue to be impressed by the job
that they're doing over there, because ten different starting line combinations,
they're rarely the problem out there, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
They know that that offensive line can run block. We've
always known that the Carolina Panthers have a line that
can run block, Run the ball. Do what you're supposed
to do. Do what you're the strongest that which is
run the ball. And I like the game plan of
you know, they were rolling out Bryce a lot more
on Sunday, getting him out of the pocket. He wasn't back
there as a sitting duck, you know. Get him out
of the pocket a little bit, dude, do some more
(13:40):
creative stuff. Saw some very creative the like kind of
option pitch to Mitchell Evans as he back back up,
Just pitch it out to him, let him get on
the boundary. Just get creative and get keep him from
being stagnant in back in the pocket.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
You know.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
And to Bryce's credit, now he's starting to step up
in that pocket, climb the pocket, make a throw.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
That touchdown pass to Tedroo McMillian. I mean, that's the
best example of it, Like he's gotten more and more comfortable,
and that's those are the kind of things that make
me feel good about him, is that. You know, obviously
the yards and the touchdowns and things like that matter,
but watching him navigate the pocket, watching him climb and
sidestep and go through his second, third, fourth progression I
mean tedor McMillan was his third or fourth progression on
(14:18):
that play, and he gave himself time and not only
did he wait to make the play, he threw him
open over the top. Like that's the kind of stuff
that gives you hope that it's really starting.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
To click for him.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
It does, it does, but just like like I said,
it all goes back to the game plan to me,
So you know, hopefully we'll get and you know, I
don't want to get on here and bag and dog
on canalists. He's still learning too. He's a young player
caller in his NFL. He's learning like this team is learning.
He's growing as this team is growing as a play
call So I'm not now here to just bag on
(14:47):
Dave Canalists. But as they grow and get tighter, and yeah,
we're going to start to see this thing be better
and better and better as they both grow with each other.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Yeah, I'm with you before I let you go. We
had Del Curry on a little while ago, talked Hornets
and Raptors. You know, they had a nice little run
last weekend, knocked off a couple of pretty good teams,
and then they fell twice in New York and the
Nets game. I'm not quite sure what they were. Well,
Charles Lee did tell me what they were doing in
the fourth quarter against the Nets. He didn't like the
way his starters were playing. Yeah, and he yanked them.
And you know, you end up with a lineup of
(15:16):
guys and it's like you're not trying to win that game,
you know, by the way the lineup look, and then
they fall to the Nets. It's a better team. They
got the Raptors tonight. They've played really well against them twice,
you know, fell by a bucket in the first one,
and then upset them on Sunday. Any thoughts on where
the Hornets are right now?
Speaker 2 (15:31):
I have no idea.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Okay, I mean, it's just a fun if it was.
If you're frustrated watching the Carolina Panthers go up and down,
this is even more frustrating. I mean, like, I just
don't there's no rhyme or reason to this team at all,
and that a lot of it has to do with
the lineups and you know, menus restrictions as they're trying
to get guys to come back. I mean, there's no
rhyme or reason. You never know what you're going to
(15:54):
see from the Scheltt Hornets when you see them take
the court, and that's frustrating.
Speaker 6 (15:58):
Man.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
I'm like, dude, like doing here? Yeah, And so it's
just frustrating to watch them. I mean, like last week, Willippe,
I just did the season was over, and then they
go and beat the Bulls and the Raptors. I'm like, well,
maybe I need to take that back. And then they
go to to play Brooklyn and I'm like, whoa.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
And that's why it was our class season.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
I'm like, come on, man, what are we doing. I'm like,
you can't you there's no real pulse on this team
at all.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
No consistently say this team has aphib or something. That's
what it feels like. All right, seven o four five
seven ninety six ten. Hit us up on the FanDuel
text line. We would love to hear from you Nate
Wimberley WBTV Sports Director, Sports anchor, and every Friday with
us a man is dressed for winter weather. Tonight he's
going to be covering some high school football games. Have
fun out there, buddy, absolutely about to have a good weekend.
There you go, well come back. We talked to Chip
(16:41):
Patterson CBS Sports dot Com. He's in late, later than
usual today. Penn State has a coach playoffs start this weekend.
We got a lot to get to with him. Sports
Radio ninety two seven WFNZIG. Thanks to Day Wimberley, WVTV
(17:07):
Sports Directors, sports anchor for jumping in tons of high
school football state semi final action, state championship action next week.
And I do want to throw a shout out to
the folks down in rock Hill because we didn't get
to them, and a few listeners pointed that out, so
I want to make sure we do that because we
do cover those teams from time to time. A couple
of rock Hill schools playing for state championships this weekend.
Northwestern playing Ermo for the Group five championship tonight, South
(17:31):
Point playing South Florence for the four A state championship tomorrow.
So best of luck to both of those teams, great
programs in rock Hill, and again best of luck to
all of them. Seven h four five, seven ninety six
to ten. Hit us up on the fan duel text
line with your thoughts real quick. An eight to eight
number asked me what was the worst record of a
Super Bowl winning team? I think that was in relation
to the Panthers discussion. That's automatic. That's a trivia question
(17:53):
that all football fans should know. The twenty eleven New
York Giants getting it at nine and eleven and eventually
knocking off Tom Brady in the Patriot or nine and seven.
Sorry my fault, I said two thousand. Wow, my back
with New York too.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
Man, you didn't have to make it a big deal.
Well you never forgot Wow, You're going wow. Okay, you
know what I'm moving on. We got to talk some
college football with Chipatterson of cbssports dot com, CBS Sports
Network on your televisions, and the Cover three Pod, the
best college football podcast.
Speaker 5 (18:24):
In the land.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
We got Chip Patterson joining us fresh off a whole
bunch of breaking news in a crazy week. Chip Patterson,
what's going on?
Speaker 6 (18:31):
Yeah, one heck of a week. I appreciate your flexibility
as always. Yeah, we were, we were trying to figure
out man, it had not been finalized. But it got
the point where all this Matt Campbell conversation, you know,
we just we owed the Cover three audience at least
to check in so to react to the news and
make sure that they didn't go on into their weekend.
(18:52):
So I appreciate your flexibility. We were live on YouTube
YouTube dot gomplash Cover three talking about a fifty four
day search coming to an end. So yeah, I mean again,
school still needs to put out a press release here.
But Matt Campbell, I do think is at least Penn
State landing in a decent spot, even if it took
(19:13):
them way longer than it should have, in a way
more complicated and embarrassing process than it should have to
get there.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
I agree. I'm also, if I'm Matt Campbell, I'm asking
for an extra year on my contract because you took
so long and it's now past the early signing day
that I think it knocks them back a year, puts
them in a hole in recruiting in a big way.
Speaker 6 (19:29):
Yeah, that might be honestly, why we don't have everything
finalized it's just those last little leverage points. Other things
that have been brought up to me are just sort
of as the Big twelve and Iowa stayed in particular,
are starting to see the rest of the sport pull away.
And I think there's Tom Fernelli on the Cover three
podcast with me earlier while we were live, mentioned something
(19:51):
that I wasn't aware of, which I think the school
is facing some pretty significant budget deficit issues. Their nil
head just stepped away or retire hired from the athletic department.
I mean, there's just there were a lot of things
to say that if you were Matt Campbell, that this
point to have Penn State pull up and open the
door and say do you want to get in? Given
how successful he's been there, unquestionably Iowa State's most impactful
(20:15):
football coach in the whole program's history. So I think
for Matt Campbell a decent opportunity for him to be
able to level up into the Big ten. You are
one hundred percent right that with zero signing class and
a flood of transfers, he is dealing with a very different,
you know, Penn State situation than if you had been hired.
It maybe a month earlier. But I still think that
(20:38):
for Campbell, you're still getting a good coach. He's going
to have a certain style, recruit a certain type of player.
It's going to take maybe a little ramp up. But
we were looking at the schedule. They got a very
manageable non con next year. Once again, you can clip
a couple of Big ten teams. Then they can be
a Bowl team and use that at the year one
to build on.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
All Right, there's so much coaching news I want to
ask you about, but we don't have time for it all.
So I'm going to prioritize the big ticket items and
we'll see what else we can squeeze in the back half.
I had Manny Diaz on the show yesterday. He gave
me the same pitch that he's given everybody else about
why Duke deserves to be in the playoff if they
win the ACC title tomorrow. We know a seven and
five team being in the ACC title game is not
(21:17):
a great look. It's a very convoluted tiebreaker that helped
get them there. We were just looking up by the
way at ESPN, they've got Duke at a less than
one percent chance to make the playoff, even if they win.
I think we all agree with that. What is the
best case, absolute, best case scenario for the ACC this weekend?
Speaker 6 (21:35):
You're I think you're missing something in Kyle. I'll come
around on this. Two things. Number One, this has got
to be the most flexible committee that we've seen in
college football playoff history, right yeah, I mean, just it's
so impressive their agility to go from one opinion to another,
to value some wins and some losses that varying degrees
(21:58):
of importance, to celebrate that Alabama got out to a
seventeen to nothing lead against five and seven Auburn and
thinks that that was more impressive than going on the
road and beating a Pitt team that they had ranked
number twenty two. Leave Miami steady, but move up Alabama.
I mean, it's just remarkable the flexibility of these guys.
(22:20):
So that's number one to important on the mount rushmore
of playoff committees. This has got to be up there
maybe with with fourteen and with twenty three, so they
could do whatever they want if Duke wins this football
game against Virginia. Because here's the argument. You're ready because
Jim Phillips has been feeded to him, Duke would have
seven wins against power conference teams. James Madison would have zero.
(22:43):
That Duke would have, yes, a seven to five record,
but it would also be out there having tested itself
against some of the best its strength. The schedule would
be inside of the top forty, and James Madison would
not be able to compare with any of these and
certainly not change it by beating Troy. And do you
know what the tell was? The tell was Iowa. They
(23:05):
put Iowa in two spots ahead of James Madison. Not really,
you know, inocuous, right, But Iowa's got an eight and
four record. So if they can put Iowa, with only
eight wins, two spots ahead of James Madison, which has eleven,
then they absolutely could start to argue for an eight
and five ACC champion. Duke with a win against top
(23:27):
twenty Virginia, I mean, stack up the wins, Duke would
have the better what four five wins than James Madison.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
Yeah, I'm just.
Speaker 6 (23:37):
Saying I have come around on this and maybe this
is the insanity that the College Football Playoff drives us to.
But Kyle, I'm just telling you, if Duke wins that
game against Virginia and I am asked to predict, which
I'm sure I might on Sunday morning. I will predict
the Duke is in the playoff, and I predict that
it will be strength to schedule number of wins against
(24:00):
the opponents, and the Duke has better wins.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Brother, That's it's crazy, because you know Manny has said
multiple times. The first time I heard him say it
was on the Arian and Andy podcast where he kept
repeating an ACC champion will never be left out of
the playoff, like he's certain of it in the way
that he says it.
Speaker 6 (24:17):
I mean, that's that's where you get into CFP and
on and conspiracy theories. And I just think a committee
that is as impressive as this one, with their flexibility,
you know, we can't we can't pin them down, you know,
to even think that they could just be stuck with
the same conspiracy in one season, I don't think it
could be carried out. They moved too much.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
I love the way that you've handled this conversation. Very
complimentary of the committee's flexibility as you put it. Great
choice of word. Chip Patterson hanging out with us here
on a Friday. Other games we got of course, Ohio
State Indiana just a heavyweight matchup to twelve and OHO teams.
Georgia Alabama's a massive one. What do you think about
by the way, Georgia Bama both the game itself, but
also of course Bama jumping Notre Dame in the rankings
(24:59):
and everybody clamoring that the committee just said Alabama and
the SEC up for a mulligan.
Speaker 6 (25:04):
Yeah, one hundred percent, it was. It was protect themselves
from BYU beating Texas Tech. BYU beats Texas Tech. BYU
is the big thief for this year in the College
Football playoffs. Even though they are right on the outside
of the bracket, they would get bumped up. That would
bump whoever is in the ten spot out. So they
could not have Alabama in the ten spot.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
You can't.
Speaker 6 (25:25):
You can't have a team lose and move up, especially
at that point of the rank It's just that is
not going to be something they could defend. So by
moving Alabama up, they then put Notre Dame on the
chopping block, at which point that really is some of
the intrigue going into championship weekends. If BYU wins, Notre
Dame is out. I know there's a lot of talk about, well,
what if BYU drops based on a blowout win. Now
(25:48):
we're doing the Miami Notre Dame thing. Not to me,
it's very simple. If BYU wins, Notre Dame is out.
If BYU loses, Notre Dame is in. That is my
expectation in terms of that seeding. And for Alabama, I'm
also looking at the other side, what is their ceiling
because if they beat Georgia, you could build an argument
(26:08):
for a logical ranking that would have zero SEC teams
getting buys in this bracket, and I don't think that'll happen.
I think that the committee would deem Alabama's win over
Georgia so impressive and that they got revenge. No excuse
me that they beat Georgia twice, you know, they just
they would jump up to four. So I think Alabama
(26:30):
protected even in a loss, from dropping out. And if
they win, I think their sealing is four. I think
Indian Ohio state loser, no chance they drop out of
the top four. And then from there now we're just
seeing where does Texas, tech Land who who end up
by getting shuffled around in terms of ole miss and
Oregon with the matchups, and then also does that Oklahoma
(26:53):
end up falling down to being a visitor? You know,
then we get into the you know, who's the who's
at home and who's on the road in the first round,
with obviously eleven and twelve being spoken for by teams
that will be double digit underdogs in the first round.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Chiepattersoncbssports dot com the Cover three podcast with us here
for his Friday conversation, let me step away from the
playoff for a second, bring it back local. Which fan
base should be more optimistic about their head coach returning
in twenty twenty six Carolina and Bill Belichick or NC
State and Dave Dorn.
Speaker 6 (27:25):
Optimistic?
Speaker 3 (27:26):
Yep?
Speaker 6 (27:27):
I think optimistic is NC State and Dave Dorn because
of something that our friend Joe Ovius I think explained.
I mean, I know this is a stunner, Kyle, but
I happen to think Joovis and Joe Jillio have a
pretty interesting and like informative viewpoint on such things. I
liked how Joe Ovias said it's like the Dave Dorn experience.
You're gonna have a couple wins a year that make
(27:49):
you go hell yeah, brother and you're gonna have a
couple games a year where you're like, what was that?
And you never know which games it's gonna be, But like,
that's the Dave Dorn experience, and so Dave dory them
back for year fourteen is another year that Dave Dorn experienced.
And as long as it's including what has happened each
of the last five years, and that's beaten North Carolina,
(28:09):
I think that, you know, you are more optimistic than
whatever the bleak outlook you are with the tar Heels,
where you're gonna have waves of contributors leaving to go
to the transfer portal. You know, thirty some odd true
freshmen joining from the recruiting class, many of whom I mean,
I don't know how many of them are going to start,
but you've got to think that based on the caliber
(28:31):
of the class, that a lot of them are going
to be given an opportunity to really be rotation players
at a minimum, throw in whatever they pick up in
the transfer portal to phill holes. I mean, they really
are just they're not starting over from where they started
last year, because Kyle, where they started last year was
like a negative one. It wasn't even a year zero.
It was a year negative one. So now we're up
(28:51):
to year zero. But you were really starting to hit
the reboot button on that one. And I think that
that reboot button is going to retain a little bit
of the positives from the twenty twenty five seasons, of
which there were definitely some. But man, it's a lot
of reboot to be optimistic that you're not just gonna
really struggle except to try and win at the margins.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
All right, last thing, real quick. I'm more likely to
bounce back in twenty twenty six Dabo and Clemson or
Shane Biemer and the game Cocks.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
Uh h, I I'm gonna say they could be somewhat
close in the win. No they couldn't. No, not, I
gonna go with Clemson. Yeah, I think it's gonna be Clemson.
And let me just put and fail you about my
hesitation of South Carolina. I think that South Carolina undergoing
like another round of staff changes and just continuing to
(29:44):
see some of these like that was just such just
starting to stand out more and more. That team last
season was a really special collection of talent, just kind
of top to bottom. One of those their year kind
of seasons and my mistakes, and I think of mistake
of a lot of others too, is that we thought
that was like a first step of building towards something
A lot of it happy to do, of course with
(30:06):
Leonora's Sellers as a quarterback. But I think that this
is a little bit more of a Okay, that was
a spike year, and now we've fallen back to the average,
which leads to Shane Diemer and you've been here that long.
If this is your average, is that acceptable? I don't know.
That's the conversation for South Carolina to me. I think
that Clemson, at the end of this thing, this is
(30:28):
going to really be like when they beat Kentucky in
that Gator Bowl and led everyone to believe they're like
the greatest nine win team of all time. I mean,
Clemson strung together a couple wins. You know, they beat Louisville,
they beat Florida State. I mean, I know everyone's ready
to bury them and call them for dead. But you
beat South Carolina at the end of the year, go
let the Tigers win their bowl game. They will be
They'll still be talking big going into next season. So
(30:51):
I think Clemson will feel again the emotion part feel
better about getting a bounce back.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
Love it. Hey buddy, I know it's been a busy day.
Thanks as always for the time. Have a great weekend,
enjoy these games. We'll talk to you next Friday.
Speaker 6 (31:03):
Dound good, y'all be well.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Jipattersoncbsports dot Com, CBS Sports Network and the Cover three
podcast with Danny Knell, Tom Fernelly and Bud Elliott. Love
their podcast. They do a great job Chip with us
each and every Friday. On the show, Matt and Greensbro say,
Chip's doing an excellent job of making us forget your
nine to eleven goof. I feel like that one's not
going away for a while and it was an honest mistake.
Justin and Myrtle Beach is also giving me a hard
(31:25):
time for that. So wolf Pack James saying, look at
our schedule next year. If we retain CCH and Hollywood,
we could win ten games. I'm assuming you mean CJ
retaining CJ and Hollywood. Smothers, we could win ten games
next year. Who's got a more optimistic outlook in your mind?
Speaker 5 (31:44):
Smoke?
Speaker 3 (31:44):
State fans are Carolina fans with their coaches returning state
because you know what, it is we just give them
the benefit of the doubt that Dave's always going to
win seven or eight games.
Speaker 4 (31:53):
I mean, outside of two years, that's what's been what
he does.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
Yeah, yeah, So what does he have the second most
ACC win of all time? Is that right?
Speaker 5 (32:01):
In program history?
Speaker 3 (32:02):
No, he's got the most wins in program history?
Speaker 4 (32:04):
We no ACC wins because probably him are uh jellabout him?
Speaker 3 (32:13):
No, And I'm talking about let's see in college who
has the most ACC wins of all time in conference history?
Speaker 5 (32:21):
Debo? Right, Dabo, Bobby?
Speaker 3 (32:23):
I think it is? Yeah, I think so. Frank Beamer's
up there, like I got to look that.
Speaker 4 (32:29):
Up compared to Bobby. What do you mean Bobby has
to have more ACC wins?
Speaker 3 (32:34):
Oh yeah, no, no, I no know. I'm just talking about
who's up there near the top. So you got Dabbo,
you got Bobby, you got Frank. I mean it's funny
because Dave's just been so steady, like he's been steady Eddie,
win seven or eight games a year every year, and
you know, you look up fourteen years later and he's
near the top of the conference in conference wins.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
And they they have do they do have one major
non con game next year, and it's kind of weird.
It's still kind of weird to say this is a
major non con game, but they got to go two
Vandy next year.
Speaker 5 (33:02):
It's gonna be tough.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
Yeah, it is all right. Seven four five, seven ninety
six ten. Hit us up on the FanDuel text line.
Right now, we go to smoke on the headlights.
Speaker 5 (33:11):
All right.
Speaker 4 (33:12):
I got some quarterback news in the NFL first Off,
even though the season is lost. Dan Quinn confirmed that
Jade Daniels will start for the Commanders on Sunday. When
we all fought his season was over about a month ago.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
Just no, I thought I always heard he was he
would return sometime around week thirteen or fourteen.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
Well around around the time when he injury immediately happened,
I thought he was done. But yeah, Jane Daniels coming back.
He's gonna be playing for the Commanders as they take
on the Vikings. And I don't think nine's back, So
it's Brosmer again.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
Best of luck to them. Yeah, and here's how things
are bad in Minnesota.
Speaker 4 (33:51):
They could use Kyler Murray and apparently Kyler Murray will
not return this year due to his foot not progressing.
Speaker 5 (33:58):
The foot is not such?
Speaker 3 (34:00):
This is or is it such?
Speaker 5 (34:04):
Who knows?
Speaker 4 (34:05):
But it feels like what is such is the Kyler
Murray era in Arizona is likely done.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Oh yeah, it's done done. They're so ready to move
on from him out there, fan base meet. I mean
the team obviously, I think too, but one.
Speaker 5 (34:19):
Playoff appearance in six seven years.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
I still can't believe there were Panthers fans a couple
of weeks ago that wanted to get him here. It's
one thing to want to move on from Bryce, but
for Kyler Murray, I just couldn't believe that there were
people who thought that was a good idea.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
Kyler Murray's a backup Kyle No, okay, just making churches?
Speaker 3 (34:36):
No, no, absolutely, no is a I'm willing to be
open minded and listen to somebody who wants to make
a compelling case. But I have a hard time believing
there is a compelling case to go bring Kyler Murray
in here next year for any reason whatsoever?
Speaker 5 (34:51):
Should the A's call him back?
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Like if they start an esports team, maybe get Kyler
Murray out here. But should the A's call him back?
Maybe possibly the next Ricky Henderson, well come back, we'll
wrap up the show. Sports Radio ninety two seven w
FNZ Hey one final times Sports Radio ninety two seven

wfn Z KB and Smoke wrapping up the show as always,
emanating live from the Chandler VAULTA Studios, the Carolina's Personal
Injury Lawyers. One call, that's all go to CV Injury
law dot Com. Aight oh three number has reminded us well,
He's reminded us of multiple things today, like we forgot
to mention the two rock Hill area high schools playing
for state championships. But he also checked us on the
(35:46):
all time ACC wins list that we were discussing a
minute ago. He said, we were very close, but we
forgot George Welsh of Virginia on that list. Top five
wins all time in conference in the ACC. Dabo Sweeney
number one, about number two, George Welsh number three, Frank
Beamer number four, Mac Brown number five. That's your top
five all time winning as st ACC coaches.
Speaker 4 (36:06):
That makes sense because George Welsh was at Virginia for
what twenty eight years?
Speaker 5 (36:10):
Long time and very damn good, very good coach.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
Absolutely one hundred and thirty four career wins for George Welsh.
Speaker 4 (36:18):
But Kyle, do you want to let you know I
did crack in on the top five. Thankfully Bubba Cunningham
and the boosters allowed me to come back. But now
they they fired me, and they didn't say they fired me,
but they fired me. And now they got Jordan Belichick there.
I think they probably missed me. Kyle, do you think
I would have gotten six wins out of this team?
Speaker 6 (36:39):
You know?
Speaker 5 (36:40):
Yeah? Do you one waste two million dollars on Geo Lopez?
Speaker 3 (36:44):
Do you really think because you're not the first part
you're joking? But I think Fiddy has argued this. One
or two others have said Mac Brown gets this team
to a ball game. I don't know how you feel
about it.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
Well, the ross Wood lookmpletely different, but it was definitely
looked at seventy players wouldn't come in. I just think
Mac has better false process and better process entirely on
how to get college players. And when he got Bill Belichick,
let's be fair, let's be real, half assing it his
whole entire thing with his girlfriend, and then you got
(37:21):
the fake GM mask grading as a GM thinking he's
you know, King Kong and can run everything when he can't. Uh,
this is what you're gonna get. You're gonna you bring
you bring the circus, expect you know, bring the circus,
Expect the circus.
Speaker 5 (37:36):
This is one of those situations. Man.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
We had a guy get really mad at us yesterday.
Stevie Goodwood got really mad at us yesterday for laughing
at the Jordan Hudson Bill Belichick conversation. You know, He's like,
you guys are it's beneath you? And I was like,
I don't know, man, Like everybody's talking about the same thing.
So like I I can't imagine. Listen. I know Carolina
fans want to win football games, and they certainly got
(37:59):
better as the season came along. And I do want
to mention too, they had a good recruiting class in
the early signing period where they have like eight four stars,
top twenty class in the nation. It's not bad. I
mean it's not. It's a good class for them. So
we'll see where it goes. But I don't know that
I can get on board with Mac getting this particular
collection of players to a ballgame. I just don't think
(38:20):
the roster was that good. No it wasn't, but all
the key players on that roster. It felt like mad
the best part, it'd be a different roster of mack
ddon left. So he's not He's clearly not coaching this
roster and Matt could still recruit.
Speaker 4 (38:31):
But I know a lot of Hardhill fans are saying, now,
look at the recruits that Bill has. Like I said
earlier this week, and you said, look at the recruits
mac Gott, look at the recruits Larry Feddor got. Look
at the recruits that every single coach post George Welsh
would get at Virginia specifically looking at you, Mike London.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
Did those Jones at Tennessee?
Speaker 5 (38:51):
Yeah? Butch Jones at Tennessee?
Speaker 4 (38:52):
Did those result in wins and national title hopes and
everything like that?
Speaker 6 (38:57):
No?
Speaker 4 (38:57):
And by the way, why are you now pivoting when
you got a seventy four damn your seventy four year
old head coach thinking we got to bring this to
long term?
Speaker 5 (39:04):
No, when your coach is seventy four, you're thinking I
need to win right now?
Speaker 3 (39:09):
Yeah, But I mean, all I know is the excitement
has been zapped. You know, we'll see if when the
season rolls around next year, if that's that changes at all.
But man. Ever since that second half against TCU. I'm sorry,
the final three quarters against ECU ACU, would I say ECU?
Speaker 5 (39:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (39:24):
Damn TCU lot I said it right the first time.
Speaker 5 (39:27):
You said it right the first time, then he said
it wrong.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
But you're probably thinking of that time that ECU puts
seventy on Larry Fordora.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
Well, maybe that all right? So we go tipping our

Speaker 4 (39:42):
Tip my Captain Chip Patterson for coming up with the
greatest convoluted scenario for Duke to somehow getting to the
college football playoffs.
Speaker 5 (39:48):
I hope it works out.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
Ah, that's good stuff. I'm just gonna tip my cap
to college football. It's not over this weekend, but you
know it's almost over, and championship weekends here. Then it's
bowl games and the college football playoff and I can't wait.
We are back by the way at six thirty for
