Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Kyle Bailey Show, powered by Victory Chevy Charlotte,
where every month is Truck Month. Victory Chevy Charlotte, your
Silverado destination.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Our number three Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z
emanating live from the Chandler Vaulta Studios, the Carolina's personal
injury Lawyers. One call, that's all go to Cvinjurylaw dot Com.
That's Cvinjurylaw dot Com. HJ just said KB, as a

(00:41):
first time dad, elf has to be the pick, right.
Your texter is about to spend the next few years
negotiating with a creature who thinks spaghetti is a finger
food and emotional regulation is optional. Buddy is the prelude
to the first five years watching him pour syrup on everything.
So if you're confused, I had a text or just
a couple of minutes ago, who said, KB, I'm about

(01:02):
to become a first time to ad. What do you
think is the first Christmas movie that you should show
to a kid? You know, what should be the first
Christmas movie I show to my son? And I love
the question. I love it. Now I'm coming to the
phone lines to take your phone calls to talk panthers
in college football here in just a second. But I
have to make this case because I have a great
deal of respect for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, for instance.

(01:26):
Love it great movie, no bad things to say about it.
Love some of the you know, the all time great
Christmas movies as well. But you know, here's the thing
that nobody like. From my perspective as a millennial, Home
Alone is the best Christmas movie of all time. I'm
a Home Alone guy. I don't think it's particularly close
at this point, and I've actually recently arrived at that conclusion.

(01:48):
Always loved it, but I thought there was maybe, like
I like Christmas Story being on for twenty four hours
on Christmas Day, but I think that's a comfort thing
for me. It's kind of like a TV version of
a BANKI right. I love the fact that it's on
all time. I can watch it whenever I want to,
but increasingly I choose not to because I've seen it enough.
I can recite the movie nearly word for word, like

(02:08):
Home Alone is is like dominant. It's the only Christmas
movie where a child is abandoned by his family and
the audience is like, yeah, yeah, that makes sense, Like
nobody's calling child Protective Services. Nobody's that worried outside of
the mom, who's I mean, you know, probably not worried enough,
and every Like the audience is just like, well, he

(02:29):
was being annoying, and that alone makes it elite. Man.
Like I mentioned a Christmas story a second ago. Good movie.
Enjoy it. A lot of a lot of nostalgia there.
But it's like a kid wants a BB gun. That's
kind of the plot. Like the kid wants the BB gun,
that's the plot. That's not really a letter like that,
that's not really a movie. That's more like a letter

(02:50):
to Santa that somehow got a budget behind it. Like
the whole thing is just adults being mad and a
lamp shaped like a leg and everybody. But he pretends
that it's deep because it's narrated. Again, I like it,
but I'm not gonna overly romanticize the movie. If Home
Alone had a narrator, it would just be mcaulay culkin

(03:11):
saying yeah, I'm gonna kill these guys like that, that's
what it would be. And then you got like Miracle
on thirty fourth Street, and that's fine. I like it.
The movie's like, hey, what if Santa Claus but a
court case, like according to the US Postal Service, Santa's real.
I don't know. Like there's also there's no violence, so

(03:32):
like I don't really you know. And then you got
like National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. People love the movie. It's funny.
I like it. Let's be honest, though, it's a guy
who's kind of slowly realizing that his life sucks, you know.
I mean, it has a fun, happy ending, but like
the big climax is a bonus check, and I like it,
I really do. I got nothing bad to say about it.

(03:53):
But like Home Alone ends with burglars getting their souls
removed by paint cans. Like it's the best.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
He's the best because Joe Peshi somehow agreed to do
a movie where he could do anything but curse. Yeah,
that's what makes Home Alone really for me, it's just
watching Joe peshe wanting to curse and drop every single
F bomb on the mankind, but he can't because he's
an MPG movie. Okay, Like, what's the first Christmas movie

(04:21):
your show you did show or you would show to
your kid? Seven oh four or five seven ninety six ten,
to indoctrinate them into Christmas, which is a good thing.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
By the way, I would say do Rudolph movies. Charlie
Brown Christmas is near the top for me too. My
kids are currently really into Charlie Brown Christmas.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
I didn't see Christmas Vacation until I was like nine ten. Yeah,
so that then, Plus my parents didn't want me to
see a movie because I wouldn't get a lot of
the humor when I was a little toddler. And plus
it was not a cartoon movie, so I wasn't really
into it. Yeah, and a lot of kids they'll probably
be like that too, Okay, but Home Alone definitely is
one of the first ones I think you show.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Yes.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
I think I first saw it when I was like
six seven, and I was like, oh my god.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
My kids loved it. And at the end of it,
when I told them there was a second one, you'd
think I was the greatest dad that ever lived. Just
don't tell them there's a third I don't. I won't
as far as again. It's like the Major League series,
like there's one, there's two, and then amnesia, nothing else
after that. But when I told them there was a
second one, boy, I was the greatest dad that ever lived.
You know what it made one like three years ago.
I don't care. I don't like really, I don't care,

(05:25):
but like it just the movie itself. Ron the Plumber said,
it's not about your favorite movie, it's about your kids. No,
this is the I showed them this. This is the
one that told them this is the greatest. These are
the greatest Christmas movies of all time. Because every kid
watching that movie thought, yep, yep, I could absolutely rig
my house like Vietnam. If you know, we had burglars
coming in and my parents weren't home. It made us

(05:47):
all bold and creative and thinking, yeah, I could handle
two grown professional criminals on my own at nine years old.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
And your kids could honestly think that too, because with
the Blue Choo money you could have about ten kids. Yeah,
Like I mean, and the and the violence in it
ages like a fine wine as a kid, it's hilarious.
As an adult, you're like that man would never walk again.
I mean, it would be watching.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Daniel Stern continuously take the bricks off the forehead and
Home alone two had me in stitches as a kid.
Oh two, there's no way to surviving any of them. No, no, no,
but like but I mean, as a kid, it was
the funniest thing that I've ever seen, and as a
forty year old man, it's still one of the funniest
things that I've ever seen. And like, Christmas is actually
central to the movie movies, snow lights, music, church scenes, family, guilt, redemption,

(06:35):
you know, but none of it stops the movie from
actually being about, you know, protecting your house, like it's
the Alamo, Like that's the balance, it's the These are
the greatest Christmas movies of all time.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
I will say, we're getting a lot of people more
than I thought, a lot of people chiming in about
the Santa.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Claus with Tim Allen. Yeah, those are good.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Santa Claus one and two, Okay, I was actually kind
of surprised about the amount of Santa Claus one and two.
Week got all Right, which was another one I watched
a lot.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
I like them. Again, I'm not hating. Well, there's a
couple of these that I don't think are that good.
But most of all, I like Christmas movies. But if
you're asking me what are the greatest, which are the
ones that I would show my kid first and foremost?
Keep in mind, if you're asking me what to show
an infant, like are you if you're going to show
this to your ten minute old baby's probably not gonna
get it. But you know, when the time comes, I
would say, home alone. Let's go back to the phone

(07:26):
lines here seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten.
We have Ryan up. He wants to talk about the Panthers. Ryan,
what's going on?

Speaker 4 (07:33):
Hey, I appreciate you taking the call. Let me just
chime in real quick. I'm with you. I'm with you
home alone, especially especially old man Marley, the man who
all those rumors were that he was a serial killer
who actually ends up being the hero at the end.
Just you know, just things like that, how rumors get started.
That just it's great FORGID. Christmas vacation is good. I

(07:53):
don't think Christmas vacation is appropriate like for like little kids.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
I'm with you on home alone. I'll say that. But yeah,
to my call on the on the Panthers.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
Like I've been saying this, I've been saying to a
lot of people for a while. Now, I'm I like
the spot we're in now. We've we've definitely been inconsistent.
It's it's very frustrated and still watching them sometimes. But
I'll take this. I mean, right now we're sole possession of,
you know, of first place in our division, like two
games to go. Usually the past few seasons, we've we've
been out of this thing by Halloween usually, so like

(08:23):
we we were not even close to.

Speaker 5 (08:24):
It, even even being in it, like like we are now.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
I like the position we in. We've been saying for
a couple of years now we we wanted to be
competitive and fighting for the division.

Speaker 5 (08:33):
Well that's where we are now. We've got to tea
that's competitive, gather, inconsistent.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
And it's ugly at times, but we are fighting for
the division right now.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
We have it.

Speaker 5 (08:42):
I can't. I mean, I'll take this, like.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
We'll work on consistency next year, but where we are
right now, I will.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
I will take this.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
It's very it's very exciting, and I think everybody seeds
to calm down with the wee we're still not satisfied
this and that, but this is better.

Speaker 5 (08:56):
Like I'll leave you with this. I'll leave you with this.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
There was a Tampa Bay fan that was sitting next
to me at the game yesterday and like he was
getting tackled a little bit by some of.

Speaker 5 (09:05):
The Panther fans. And I tried to be a good
Pander fan say hey man.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
I tried to shake his hand and say hey man,
I still respect your team and you guys, and thanks
for coming out here.

Speaker 5 (09:12):
Man wouldn't look at me or shake my hand or anything.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
I'm like, okay, okay, So I'm like, so now I
hate you Tampa fans even more, but I know the feeling.

Speaker 5 (09:19):
We were there for a while too.

Speaker 4 (09:21):
But now that just shows at least we're not that
guy in Tampa right now. So let's enjoy what we
have right now.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
I'll take this, Okay. I appreciate you, Ryan, Merry Christmas. Brother,
appreciate you, and I'm sorry you had a bad experience
with a Tampa fan spoke. What's going on? I think
he is a bum? Nieces being time out? Wow, what happened?
He was texting?

Speaker 3 (09:40):
In Christmas movies and technically this would count as a
Christmas movie because it takes place here in Christmas.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
But why on god s Green Earth are you mentioning?
Eyes wide shut?

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (09:51):
I love that movie technically is a Christmas movie, but
why is it really? We just completely did we just
completely moved past Ryan's phone call, sorry I.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Got lost in is a bum mentioning Eyes White Shut,
which is I mean, honestly, I think everyone needs to
see it because it's the last Kubrick movie.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Well, you know the piano tones that played throughout the
course of that movie. Have you ever seen a dog's
reaction to them?

Speaker 1 (10:14):
No?

Speaker 2 (10:14):
I have not, Oh I have, I have. I when
I used to work, you know, when I worked as
a bouncer many years ago, I'd get off, you know,
get off shift, watch the bartenders count the money while
we played pool, and maybe drank a beer. I'm not
sure if I'm supposed to say that, but I'd get
home late and I had a dog, you know, my
old dog that would be in the house. And one
night it was on, I did it a second time,

(10:35):
just to test the theory. My dog the reaction to
those piano tones in that movie, in Eyes Wide Shut,
I mean, it was a reaction unlike a unlike anything
I'd ever seen before. Jumping back and forth over the couch,
hiding under stuff. Freaked that dog the hell out. So anyway,
just made me think of that. I've never thought of
it as a Christmas movie in my life. I didn't
know that it was. I mean, I didn't even think
that it was set at Christmas time. I had no

(10:56):
idea it was okay, all right.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
But I just did not expect Eyes Watch not to
be mentioned on the text line.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Yeah, all right, Well didn't think we got there the
movie for kids? Oh uh? Seven oh four numbers, said KB.
Let me give you the top black Christmas movies of
all time. We're going subgenre here, all right, as a
as an exciting white he wants me to know this.
He says, top three, the Preacher's Wife, good movie. Seen
it this Christmas? Don't know if I've seen it, to

(11:23):
be honest with you. And then he says, Friday after Next. Yeah,
I'm gonna say so, hold on, You've heard a lot
of people say that's a Have you never seen Friday
after Next?

Speaker 3 (11:35):
No, I've only seen the first. I've only been told
to see the first.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
See I have some fairly, I have a couple of
controversial opinions. According to some, I would argue that major
League two is better than Major League one, and I
would argue that Friday after Next is better than Friday. Really,
because I've been told my whole life just avoid all

(11:59):
the sequ Wait, what to Friday? Just watch Friday. That's
what people have told you. Yes, oh no, I'm sorry,
hold on, I'm thinking Next Friday. Never mind, he got
me all turned around. I think Next Friday is better
than the original Friday. And I love the original Friday,
love it like, nothing bad to say about it. But

(12:20):
I thought Next Friday was hilarious. So then Friday after Next.
I'm also reminded that. Okay, never mind, I got twisted
in my head. I was thinking he meant Next Friday,
and now I'm trying to remember Friday after Nay. Yeah
that was a Christmas movie, Okay, okay.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Yeah, but I just heard that the sequels had not
been worth watching, so I never went out and watched them.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
It's kind of like how people view anything after Home
alone too.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah. People are backing me up right now in the
text line that Next Friday is better than Friday. HJ said,
KB stopped the cap. Friday's a classic. Friday is a classic,
no question about it. Friday is a classic. But I
would argue to you that Next Friday was even funnier
than Friday. And if you're very confused, I think Chris
Tucker Ice Cube nineteen ninety five, the original Friday. Next

(13:04):
Friday came along five years later and in two thousand.
I think Next Friday, the sequel is funnier than the original,
and I think the original is hilarious. That's how funny
Next Friday is. All right, boy, this segment has taken
a couple of twists and turns seven oh four five,
seven ninety six to ten. Hit us up on the
FanDuel text line. Uh, this is all about Christmas movies

(13:24):
right now. People have completely backed off any Panthers takes.
We did have a couple of people upset, well, people
are generally upset on the text line, but we have
excel defenders. We have people thinking that we're not going
hard enough in the paint at Xavier League at. I
don't know what more you you that that group of

(13:46):
people want us to say. I Xavier League at is
just I thought they were going to lose that game
yesterday in part because of those drives. It didn't pan out. Now, granted,
after the time he didn't get his feet in bos
he turned around and got the first down right after that,
and that led to the touchdown right before lifetime. But
like I, I want that kid to work out. I

(14:07):
really do. I want him to work out, and I
do till still tend to subscribe to the Mussin Mohammed
way of thinking of Hey, sometimes it takes a couple
of years. The athleticism is still there. Obviously. I think
he cares. I think his blocking has gotten much much, much,

(14:28):
much better, and that's valuable. But damn it, you got
to catch the football across the middle. You cannot drop
that ball. Yesterday, you cannot drop that ball. It hit
him square in his damn face. And the idea that
a second a guy who was closing in on the
end of his second year of the NFL still doesn't

(14:48):
have the spatial awareness required to get his feet down
on that ball. I can't fathom it now. I mean,
I'm not doing it, but I don't get paid to
do it. He does. We judge him according to his peers.
How does he not have that bil to get his
feet down? I realized we we can more easily talk
about these things after a win. It's not that big
a deal, and I'd rather focus on the positives. But
I really wanted that young man to work out and

(15:09):
hopefully he still does, but right now, there's just not
that much evidence that it's going to If they make
the playoffs, they're going to need a third guy to
step up, and I don't know if it's going to
be him. Yeah, I'm more I'm more convinced that David
Moore is a better option if they make the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
I mean, it's just one of those things where you're
looking back to Dan Morgan's first draft class and it's
a lot more streaky than this past year. Because this
twenty twenty five draft class is looking great right now,
twenty twenty four, h you know, XL has his problems,
and then you add onto drafting Excel to the fact
that you could have had Lad McConkie, and then you

(15:47):
know Jonathan Brooks.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Unfortunately, injuries have played a factor.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
J T.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
Sanders says, outside of yesterday, for the most part, been
m i A this year, You've had a lot of mistakes,
and Trevin Wallas has had moments, but you know, he's
not I don't know he's ever gonna be a star,
but I think he's gonna be a starting quality guy.
It's just it's really head scratching, but thank god, you undrafted.
Free agency is a thing because you honestly might have

(16:10):
gotten a better wide receiver in UDFA than you did
in the first round.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
YEP seven oh four five seven ninety six ten. Keep
hitting us up on the fan duel text line. When
we come back, we pause on the football, We talk
some hoops. Paulie Buckets, Paul b and Cardi of ESPN
is back for his Monday conversation. We'll talk to him
next here on Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z

(16:47):
Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn ZKB and Smoke
with you here on a Monday. It is our loan
show of the week. MI, I should say mine, I
gotta stop saying we because Smoke's gonna still be working
this week. I'm traveling. He's local. Uh, he's gonna be
what you're here. You're in tomorrow and Friday this week?

Speaker 4 (17:02):
Right?

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Is that correct? That is correct? Sir? All right, there
you go. So I'm out the rest of the week,
but I'm flying back to the Queens City on Saturday
for the Panthers Seahawks game on Sunday. I will see
you at the WFNZ Doghouse bright and early Sunday, morning
at ten am, real quick before we talked to Paul
be and CARTI we have some massive breaking news out
of the NFL. You've probably seen it by now, but

(17:23):
just in case you haven't, DK Metcalf got into an
altercation with a fan yesterday in their game against the
Detroit Lions. DK Metcalf can be seen reaching up grabbing
a hold of the fan, who's got plenty of Lions
gear on. There have been a lot of accusations and
allegations about what was said to spur the incident. I
don't have time to get into it all right now,

(17:45):
but what I can tell you is that Adam Schefter
reporting just four minutes ago that DK Metcalf has been
suspended for the final two games of the regular season
as a result of his actions yesterday, and he can
still appeal, but he's now slated to mister Steelers upcomingotential
game against the Browns. So yeah, it's not looking good

(18:05):
for DK Metcalf. Also, there are and again I don't
know enough about this to make any sort of, you know,
big conclusions or believe that I know exactly what I'm
talking about on this. I was busy with the Panthers
game yesterday. I saw the incident, but it sounds like
some of what DK Metcalf and maybe, you know, those
in his camp were accusing the man of saying might

(18:27):
not have actually been said, or at least they can't
prove it, and there could be some video evidence that
contradicts those allegations. So I'll try to get more information
on that. But DK Metcalf has been suspended for the
rest of the regular season. You know, a team in
the playoffs, in the playoff hunt, clearly is not going
to play the final two weeks. So we'll get back
to it. But right now we have to welcome in

(18:48):
and welcome back Pauli Buckets Paul being Cardi, ESPN college
basketball analyst, national recruiting director, former Horizon League Coach of
the Year. He's back with us on the hotline for
a Monday conversation. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy holidays,
all of the above, Paul. We appreciate you, buddy.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
Hey KB, how you doing, bolved doing well?

Speaker 2 (19:07):
And I felt like a jerk seven days ago because
I didn't mention it. I did later in the week.
I hope you were listening when I gave you by
who bald out nominee for your recent contract extension at ESPN.
That's going to take you twenty years on the job
with the worldwide leader. Nobody more deserving. You know how
highly I think of you, how highly we think of

(19:27):
you here at the station. So congratulations on the extension.

Speaker 5 (19:31):
Well, thank you very.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
Much, Kyle. I appreciate it, and I'm very grateful ESPN
for the time that they're giving me.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
Yeah, I know you do appreciate it, and you do
the best with that time. There's no doubt about it.
But you earned it, and we wanted to at least
mention that while we had you on the air.

Speaker 5 (19:48):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
So we got the Hornets back in action tonight, and
they have been much better recently because well they've gotten
the band back together, Paul. Everybody's been healthy out there together,
and you know you've been telling telling us, gotta wait
for this, like once these guys get back out there
and together. Now. The last result, notwithstanding they had a
bad shooting night against the Pistons, they kind of got
blown out twice in that same game, but you know,

(20:10):
prior to that, they beat the Hawks. LaMelo went off
in his return, They beat the Cavaliers held Cleveland scoreless
in overtime before that. You know, I'm Paul, You've been
saying it. Get these guys healthy together and they can
make a run of the postseason.

Speaker 1 (20:23):
I still believe that there's no evidence that tells me
that can't happen. Now, other teams have to lose and
we have to get on a winning streak. But you
mentioned the two games Kyle as Lanta and Cleveland. What
they did in overtime against Cleveland on the road to
get Lanta game was so impressive because everyone was back,
they played together. LaMelo looked like the star that he

(20:46):
can be, and everyone just falls in line. What's your
game plan going to be? Take Lamello out? Well, then
you have Brandon Miller and we see kN kinnimple as
just he's playing like a veteran. Miles Bridges is the connector,
and the guys in the middle, Cock Runner and Big Falla,
Mussa Diabate. They're doing their job. And Sexton is a great,

(21:08):
great who was a great acquisition and he's been doing
terrific for them. I just like this team. They just
got to play together for an extended stretch and then
we'll know more about them.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
What do you We talked so much about LaMelo, and
as I talked to you and you know other basketball analysts,
sometimes I'm thinking, well, what else can I ask about him?

Speaker 4 (21:28):
Right?

Speaker 2 (21:28):
Because he's been hurt a lot, and we know that
when he's good, he's very good. But you know, he's
still a young guy. And we saw what he can
be again against Atlanta. What do you think is standing
between him and consistency right now?

Speaker 1 (21:42):
Consistency, a consistent approach. No, I think look for all
these guys, it's what they do in the off season.
I don't know what they do in the off season.
But he must take care of his body, enhance his frame,
make it so strong and durable. The best ability is availability, right, durability,

(22:03):
and he needs to be that now. Sometimes injury is
part of bad luck. You step on someone's ankle, you
fall down, you break a bone, no question about it.
But his body needs to get tougher and more durable
in the joints, in the ligaments, the muscles, and to
take you know, if it's going to be an eighty
two game plus stretch. I just see so many guys

(22:25):
around the league that do play and they take a beating,
but I know they take care of their body. Number
one is what he does in the offseason to take
care of his body. Number Two, I'd like to see
him be more of a vocal leader, more invested in
the defensive end. I believe his offense is a high level.
He had to take a lot of bad shots in

(22:45):
the past, he had to take maybe all the shots.
I don't think he does that anymore. I think his
shot quality is better. I know he's done film work
with the coaching staff. Plus he has more options around
him with Brandon Miller and obviously con Kainipple's than Miles Bridges.
I think he trusts his teammates more. And I got
to be frank with you, the onus is on him

(23:07):
right now to start leading this team.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
Do you think I know one thing that fans express
a lot of frustration about with him, and it's not
even about him. It's the way that he's treated by officials,
or at least the perception of it. You watch these games,
do you think he gets a fair shake from the officials, Paul,
Because I do see a lot of plays with LaMelo
where he takes contact and he's not getting foul calls.

Speaker 1 (23:29):
You could say that, and I'm sure it's true, but
complaining about it does nothing.

Speaker 5 (23:34):
It does nothing for him.

Speaker 1 (23:35):
It's great for you and talk radio, yeah, but for him.
I mean, you've got to be mentally stronger to move
on to the next play. I mean, that's just your
greatest lesson is your last mistake. So whatever your mistake was,
whether it's mental or physical, you've got to keep building
on it and putting it behind you, because if you
let the bumps bother you and the lack of calls

(23:58):
bother you. I mean, I've coach college basketball twenty two years.
I know when a guy does not have his mind
in the game.

Speaker 5 (24:05):
He's not going to be.

Speaker 1 (24:05):
Very good for that team. And this guy, we need
him on the court and we need him to be
mentally tough. Doesn't have to play great every game, doesn't
have to score big, big numbers all the time, but
we need him mentally into the game, fouled or not.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
Paul, I got to ask you about t John Salon
real quick. I have been very very happy with what
I've seen from him as of late, and he's still
a work in progress, but you know, comes off the
bench gives them ten points in the win over Atlanta
gives them six points, a couple of rebounds, a couple
of assists off the bench, and the win over Cleveland
in overtime. He was such a young true prospector project

(24:42):
rather when they drafted him, and it just seemed like
there were some fans who were expecting more right away
and I didn't get that. And I don't think he's
even close to where he can be. But man, he's
made some clear strides this year. What have you seen
from him?

Speaker 1 (24:56):
Well, I watched him in Summer League after they drafted him,
and quite frank, I didn't know who he was. I've
never seen him live obviously, watch film, and I said,
this is a good prospect down the road. And we're
still halfway down the road with him because I don't
think he's close to what he can be. I wouldn't
look at his numbers per se, but his numbers per
minute are pretty good. I mean he's shooting the ball.

(25:18):
I had a pretty good clip behind the three point line,
A still go percentage is well over fifty percent. I
think he's coming along. I think he's trying to find
his niche with this team with LaMelo, Brandon now Cohn
and Sexton less shots for other guys, and I think
he understands it, and I think he accepts it. I

(25:38):
think he's just trying to figure out, how can I
help this team win and continue to improve my skill
level in my scoring. But I mean, he's a really
nice piece, and I think when they sent him down
to get minutes in the past, I think that really
helps him. He came over from France, I mean he
didn't have the speed of the game down yet, certainly

(25:58):
didn't have the physicality the game. I didn't think he
finished very well through plays early. But I think he's
growing with this franchise and I think he's developing nicely,
and I think he's a good rotation player for us.
He's very active, He's very engaged. That's what I look at, Kyle.
How engaged do you in every possession? How active do
you try to be? And then the skill level will

(26:19):
take over.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
All Right, we got Paul being cardi ESPN with us
for a Monday conversation. Let's talk some college hoops. I
watched every minute of Carolina Ohio State, and you had
to because it came down to the final seconds. Looked
like Carolina was in trouble. I thought Seth Tremble tripped
and fell and coughed the ball up, But instead it
ends up in the hands of Henry Vasar. He dunks it.
They win seventy one to seventy. Well, that was a

(26:40):
hard That was a hard fought win for Carolina, wasn't it.

Speaker 4 (26:44):
Yeah? It really was.

Speaker 1 (26:44):
I mean that game went back and forth down the stretch.
I saw that play as Trimble falling. I don't know
if he traveled, but he fell and Vastar was just quicker.
So the basketball picked it up and finished it home.
But Carolina's front court, I mean, that's there the strength
of the team. Last year it was the guards. This
year it's the front court. Caleb Wilson and Henry Basar

(27:06):
one of the top two three front courts in the country.
And you got to give Hubert Davis a lot of
credit because they play high low together. He puts them
in ball screens in the middle of the court. I
mean he is getting their best players. Those two guys
the most shots. When you look at shot allocation, it's
those two guys first and everyone else. So Hubert wants

(27:26):
to win the game in the paint. This year wants
to win it at the free throw line, and then
he wants to win it on the glass. He's kind
of going back to what he would say was, you know,
Carolina Basketball beat you up inside, score in the paint,
out rebounds you, and beat you from.

Speaker 5 (27:41):
The free throw line.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
They have to do that because they're not a real
good outside shooting team at all. Well only thirty two percent,
not very good from distance.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
What am I to make of Duke blowing a seventeen
point lead to Texas Tech on Saturday?

Speaker 1 (27:56):
I knew you're gonna ask me that. Well, hey, listen,
if we asked John Shire before the season going into Christmas,
you're going to be twelve and one, would.

Speaker 4 (28:08):
You take it?

Speaker 5 (28:10):
He would say yes.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
I would say yes. How they lost the game is
not bothersome, but it makes you start to look a
little deeper into your team because when you have a
big lead like that, Texas Tech was not going to
go away, and obviously they had the firepower and the
grit to come back, but you have to look at
your team and where the breakdowns occurred and then work

(28:32):
on those things. Now post Christmas, he and all the
other teams in college basketball will have a couple of
weeks with no school semester break has already started. They
can work on a lot of things when it comes
to film. They can see their mistakes a little bit clearer.
They don't have to rush as much. You can have
more practice time, they can get in the weight room.

(28:53):
There were a lot of breakdowns defensively, and I think
John's disappointed about that.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
Yeah, listen, I think they'll bounce back. But yeah, listen,
Texas Tech is tough. You give him credit, but I
think Duke would like to have that one back. Now listen,
before I get you out of here, we got to
talk n C State and Will Wade, because that press
conference after they blasted Texas Southern by thirty six was
It was hilarious and if you, of course hadn't watched
the game, you would have never known they won the

(29:18):
game by thirty six. But you know, Will's talking about
time to grow up, too many casual players. This ain't
kindergarten anymore. And you know, just expressing that he hadn't
seen nearly close to what he wanted to see from
his basketball team to this point. And I told Smoke
on Friday that I expect them to have a big
bounce back in a big performance against Ole Miss. They
were up nineteen at the break, they end up winning
it by fourteen. What kind of response was that?

Speaker 1 (29:41):
It was the response that he wanted. Will's going to
try to get his team going in the way that
he understands, and I think he was very transparent as
some of the things he said. You know a lot
of people say, well, why'd you been on that road?
One thing he said about them being good academically, and
it's not a daycare center. I doubt it valued education
a little bit, but I didn't think he had to

(30:03):
go there. But I think all coaches get frustrated with
their team and they have to figure a way how
to press the right button. If you will look at
Paul McNeil Jr. I mean, he's been playing out of
his mind. He came in as a top fifty prospect
in the country playing at a high, high level right now.

Speaker 5 (30:19):
I think he.

Speaker 1 (30:20):
Wants his team to give all out effort all the time,
especially on the defensive end, and when they don't, and
I'm sure they practice very hard, it's frustrating. And he
has high hopes for this team, but he has definitely
high standards and so I think he says things to
get them to respond, and it worked. Now, I mean,

(30:42):
how much can you do it?

Speaker 5 (30:43):
How long can you do it?

Speaker 1 (30:44):
Will is a veteran coach now coach at LSU, McNee
State VCU. I mean, he understands what he wants from
his team, and he's going to push those guys. And
whether or not they're going to respond they did, how
will they respond to him all season long?

Speaker 5 (31:00):
We'll find out?

Speaker 2 (31:01):
All right. Last thing, I think I joked with you
a week or two ago that I was kind of
out on Wake Forest and they dragged me back in.
And I mean on, I mean, listen, I know you're
down at the City of Palms Classic and Fort Myers
are going to be on TV tomorrow night. Wake's got
a great commit down there, Quinton Coleman. So there are
some good things, But how do they get blown out

(31:22):
by thirty one against Vanderbilt Paul? I mean, I'm a
Forbes fan, but like, this stuff can't continue to happen.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
No, no, I can't.

Speaker 5 (31:31):
Look.

Speaker 1 (31:32):
We talked to Duke's loss, right seventeen points. Will Wade,
you know, trying to fire his team up.

Speaker 5 (31:37):
After they won.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
He said, all these things. There's a lot of pressure
on coaches, and coaches a highly competitive people. But we
can't put too much dot Kyle. We can't overreact to
one win or to one loss. The season's a resume,
and it's like sandpaper on wood. You know, you're trying
to smooth things out, trying to smooth out the rough edges.
Things will get better over time or they'll get worse.

(32:00):
But you can lose any game anytime, not because of talent.
How guys show up for the game, you know, how
mentally tied into the game are they. There's so many
distractions for these kids. And I'm not making excuses, I'm
just giving it the reality. I mean, I'm down at
the City of Palms, an unranked high school team, a

(32:20):
very good team mon Vert Academy, but not ranked. They
beat the number one team in the country. How did
that happen yesterday? Well, I watched it. One team showed
up with grit, you know what, vinegar, and the other
team just went through the motions. And sometimes that happens.
So you've got to take from it, learn from it,
move on from it.

Speaker 5 (32:40):
But you got to correct it and address it.

Speaker 2 (32:42):
Paul, this right now, I'm.

Speaker 1 (32:45):
Gonna tell you this real quickly, Clinton Coleman, remember that
name for all your listeners are Wake Forest. This kid
is not a top one hundred prospect at the moment.
He's right outside the top one hundred. He will be
inside the top one hundred the next time I changed
the ranking. He's a six four to two way guard
who does nothing but win, and he reminds me of

(33:05):
Derek White from the Boston Celtics, does a lot of everything.

Speaker 2 (33:09):
Well wow, how about that? All right, buddy, listen, Happy holidays,
have a great one. We will talk to you here
in about a week.

Speaker 1 (33:14):
Be good, all right, KB, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
Thank you, brother Paul being CARDI just inked an extension
with ESPN twenty years with the worldwide leader in sports.
And there's nobody better talking college basketball than Polly Buckets
seven oh four five seven ninety six to ten. Hit
us up on the FanDuel text line right now, we
go to smoke on the headlines.

Speaker 3 (33:35):
All right, Due, you can listen to the Hornets game
tonight right here on Sports Radio WFNZ pregame starting right
after our show ends. Yep, But do want to let
people know if you're wanting to watch the game. You
can't watch it on fandel Sports because it's exclusive to Peacock. Well,
what else though, all that fandels Sports. The game's on

(33:57):
Sports Network tonight. Sorry on the Peacock app tonight. But
apparently FanDuel Sports Network is about to shut down. And
we haven't talked enough about this today and I won't
be here tomorrow to talk about it, but y'all are
going to have to because, according to a report by
Tom Friend and the Sports Business Journal, the FanDuel Sports
networks are at serious risk of dissolving unless a previously

(34:19):
reported sale to sports streaming platform de Zone is it
dazz In or de Zone I always forget, I just
go to Zone Okay, closes. Unless that deal closes by January,
FanDuel sports networks are at risk of just dissolving and
going away. And the NBA apparently has a backup plan
for the thirteen teams that are on these networks. But

(34:40):
I mean, just what two years after the switch from Bali,
which was previously Fox Sports Regional networks. Yes, we're at
real risk of the FanDuel Sports networks just shutting off
the lights, like in a couple of weeks like that
and again you guys can talk about the particulars tomorrow,
but like they might go to OTAs, which would really

(35:01):
help the fan locally.

Speaker 2 (35:03):
Channel sixty four.

Speaker 3 (35:04):
I mean, they've been doing a lot more broadcasts and
I think that's eventually where it's going for the Hornets.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
This is wild, all right, Well, come back, we'll wrap
up the show. Sports Radio ninety two to seven wf
and Z. He's tossing the cage with a hat for
the rages seats. I can't be ay you can try
to get down.

Speaker 4 (35:22):
Oh will you fail to see the world?

Speaker 3 (35:24):
Can't be say the streets is cool with the world
just off for the week.

Speaker 4 (35:27):
So day after the week in the lamb of the Lambs,
I amn't I beat damn fro.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
Show my run the Shoes, Shoes Shoes shoot one final time,
Sports Radio ninety two seven w f n Z. A
lot of Merry Christmases on the text line. I just
want to say it all back to you at one time.
Merry Christmas to each and every one of you. Hope
you have a say holiday season. I'm out the rest
of the week, but I will be back Sunday for

(35:50):
Countdown to kick Off and then Monday and Tuesday of
next week, so I'll be back, but it's the end
of the year. It's typically when I take time off
and really appreciate everybody. This year so awesome. We got
the Young Guns tomorrow morning filling in for Mack and Bone,
Willie p sitting in for me tomorrow with Smoke. We
just got some alternative programming, but a lot of ESPN

(36:11):
Radio and NFL football games. I think some college games
mixed in this week as well. It's one of the
great perks of making the switch that we did a
few months ago to ESPN Radio and joining their family
is that it allows for us to run a lot
of a lot more live sporting events, a lot more
live games, including the Charlotte forty nine ers and ECU
and all the things that we've done.

Speaker 3 (36:29):
So college football playoffs. We're on wf and Z during
the weekend. We would have never been able to do
that last year.

Speaker 2 (36:34):
Yeah, it's awesome, So Merry Christmas to all of you.
Really appreciate you sending that in. I did have Rachel
real quick say as it relates to the FanDuel Sports
Network News. I could hear the fatigue in her voice.
She says, Oh, my gosh, I'm so tired of this
charge twenty dollars a month for three teams and still
can't stay afloat. Good riddance. Yeah for the report FanDuel

(36:54):
Sports Network. If the purchase does not go through by
the Zone or Dazz and you've seen it, it's Daz
and I have no idea how you're supposed to pronounce it.
But if the purchase does not close in the next
couple of weeks, fandel Sports Network will wind down and
dissolve at the end of the NBA and NHL regular seasons,
although the NBA is preparing for this for a scenario

(37:17):
in which the company just folds in the middle of
the season, so a couple of weeks from now, so it.

Speaker 3 (37:22):
Could happened just like two years ago where they had
to have that right at the start of the EMAILB season.

Speaker 2 (37:27):
Yeah, Bally, it's infuriating, but it is what it is.
It's out of our control and it could end up
for the better. If I'm being honest, these games need
to be locally on local broadcast channels. OTAs, we've reached
a point where it's ridiculous. If you want people to
care about the team, be invested in the team. It
should be much easier to watch these damn games. That's
my rant. We got to catch you up on what
you've missed. It's time for the rewind. Or no we don't.

(37:50):
We're not doing it. No, because we have Loser Radio.
Oh yeah, I'm so dumb. You can tell I'm ready
for vacation. I'm sorry. If that's even better, I apologize
because Smoke's right. Let me try that again. As we
wind down the show, as we do every Monday following
a Panthers win, we leave the air with an encore

(38:12):
presentation of Loser Radio. Welcome in. It's the overtime show, folks.
Tea kraz Tom kraz Nicky with you. Unbelievable. I am
so incensed right now on so many different levels, so

(38:32):
many different levels. This team continues to let me down.
This team continues to let you down. This team continues
to let everybody down. This is supposed to be the
holiday spirit. You're supposed to make us feel merry and bright,
when in all actuality, we feel the exact opposite. We

(38:53):
feel like the Grinch reach deep into our chests and
tore our freaking hearts out.

Speaker 6 (38:59):
Yes, bizarre, bad yes, but it's a consistent theme under
Todd Bowles. We win eight, nine or ten games, we
win a bad division, we get a poor draft pick.
It's time to fire.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
Toilet bowl bowls.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
Oh brother, I've been the guy defending bowls.

Speaker 5 (39:18):
Well, I got nothing.

Speaker 2 (39:20):
I mean I got nothing, Bluke Kocky, I mean, listen,
is there any way you could play on time? How
many penalties today?

Speaker 1 (39:27):
For? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (39:28):
The worst game of his life?

Speaker 5 (39:30):
Toreddit it owt to reddit it now. Baker is a
Bars quarterback.

Speaker 1 (39:33):
He's not a guy. He can't get to his progressions.

Speaker 5 (39:35):
Man Baker didn't play a bad game, but in dykman
Is they took the.

Speaker 1 (39:39):
Ball out of his hands.

Speaker 2 (39:40):
Is the biggest game of this season.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
They said, basically, we don't trust you to make plays
with all your weapons. And the biggest that's OC sucks.
He sucks.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
He does.

Speaker 1 (39:53):
He cannot coach himself out of a zone. You can't
coach yourself out of a zone.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
You want to link.

Speaker 1 (40:00):
You're chopped with what we have. When you see them
a zone, you put a man in motion and no
one follows him. You know, zone.

Speaker 7 (40:06):
It better be a Disney offseason at one Buck Place,
because when Carolina got the ball with less than five
minutes left. Did anybody realistically think the Bucks were getting
the stop, because I sure didn't.

Speaker 2 (40:17):
Who's the bum on special teams, John Bullock? You cut
that guy right now, get out right now. The Buccaneers
should have had the ball in the thirty five. On
their final drive, they start at the ten because some
you know, some jobb or freaking Jose Luis Rivera al
dol Marino comits a personal foul. Get him off the team.

Speaker 3 (40:37):
I'm watching this team in the nineties, and you know what,
even though they would be losing, you always thought there
was something because the defense was there.

Speaker 5 (40:46):
I am not seeing defense.

Speaker 2 (40:47):
On this team. I am seeing twist chief. I am
seeing nothing. I don't even know how to describe it.
Please man, help me with this. You pissed your season
away to the Carolina Panthers.

Speaker 4 (41:03):
They steak.

Speaker 2 (41:08):
You're gonna be dead in one hundred years. Anyway, live
dangerously thinks you're gonna change.

Speaker 1 (41:14):

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
