We were talking about the twenty twenty six Hall of
Fame class for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Earlier today,
the Hall of Fame announced the one hundred and twenty
eight Modern era players nominated for the Class of twenty
twenty six. Thirteen of those players eligible for the first time,
(00:44):
including Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, who we were just
talking about there in the previous segment. Texter two three
one just said, I fear sports Hall of Fames are
turning into the Hall of Good?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Is that true?
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Or is just time marching on and people are and
more people are being added?
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Like is it?
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Do you really feel like, like, how many Hall of
Fames do you think are really in danger of turning
into the Hall of Good? Or is it simply some
of us have been on the earth for multiple decades
and they're just adding more people into the Hall of
Fames more of the latter, but the only one that
really has done that I think is basketball, just because
you include college and then guys like Mitch Richmond are
getting into hall.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
No offense to Mitch Richmond, but okay.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
And the fact that there's probably a legit chance that
Draymond Green is going to make the NBA Basketball Hall
of Fame. Sure, but uh football, I still think it's
if anything, they're making it tougher again because of the
limited amount of modern era finalists that get in per year.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Now, yeah, yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
I mean you say it's I think it's dependent upon
which Hall of Fame you're looking at. To Smoke's point,
but this is the pro football Hall of Fame, and
so you know, I think those making the case for
Cam Newton that are referencing Auburn and the Heisman Trophy.
I won't pretend that it doesn't matter at all, but
there's a college football Hall of Fame that exists for
great college careers.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
This is about da no sure, And.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Our next guest, a good friend of the show, Roman Harper,
played with a guy who's headlining that list, and it's
about to be a lock. First ballot Hall of Famer,
and that's of course Drew Brees, former Saints in Alabama
and Carolina Panthers Safety SEC Network analyst our buddy Roman
Harper back with us for his Wednesday conversation.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
What's up, Rome? How are you yo?
Speaker 5 (02:15):
What's good? How do you guys do it? Actually, I've
had a I'm blessed how he's favorite cop? Honestly, yeah,
I'm yeah, man, I got to play some golf today.
I've hung around my kids. They're pretty busy. I got
to take them driving around a little bit. What else
would I'd rather be? You know? Overall, it's been a
good Day's kind of done with most of my work
for the week. It's it's been a grind. I've been
(02:35):
back and forth, couple great campuses. It's been good. I like,
how can I complain? I like that ass Panther's one.
You know, how can anybody complain? Right now?
Speaker 3 (02:44):
That's true?
Speaker 5 (02:45):
You can, but you know, good luck?
Speaker 6 (02:47):
Well?
Speaker 3 (02:47):
What did I says? You mentioned it?
Speaker 4 (02:48):
What?
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Thirty to nothing over the Falcons? Almost nobody saw that coming.
What did you think of it?
Speaker 5 (02:55):
Congrats? You know, winning the game, getting a couple of turnovers,
a square on defense, like always helps, and so winning
in different ways than you imagine, especially especially for a
big rivalry game, I guess quote unquote divisional game for sure,
So it always counts two. And so that's good. You
handled your side of it. But at the end of
the day, it's kind of exactly where you think the
(03:17):
Panthers are going to be, and so continue on this journey.
It's not written, it's not the end all. It's still
just the season. And so you got to remember this.
You can't get caught up emotionally on one or two
losses in between, because ultimately, what is your vision of
this team, whatever it may be, whether it's seven wins,
eight wins, nine wins, you still got to get there.
And so it was good that they actually split or
(03:39):
have a chance to split with Atlanta within the division.
That gives you a chance. All you gotta do is
win the division. Don't don't get for don't get too
caught up on how many games you play, remember the
ones that count more than others.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
It's a week to week. Yeah, and you know this
better than anybody in this conversation. It's a week to
week league. I mean, you could look AWFO one week
and the next week you can look fan, I mean
the Panthers have done that. Like, it's so hard to
win in this league, Roman that you know, you'd like
to believe that what you saw Sunday is the start
of more wins and more good football, but you just
you never know.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
In the NFL.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
Well, it also helps Kyle when you don't start off
with two turnovers. You know, yeah, you know, let's just
go over here and put ourselves right over here by
this eight ball and try not to hit it right.
It's like, okay, So from there you got to build
from so to to sometimes learn how to win, you
got to learn how not to lose it. So that's
that's also a mindset too, okay, and then it's proof
in the pudding. So once you get it done or
(04:29):
you execute it, now we feel better. We can do
these things. You got to learn how to win in
the league, especially with a whole bunch of young guys,
new coach, new staff, new a lot, and you know,
at some point winning brings you together. So congrats to
them and getting to win, because they're not always they're not.
They're definitely not guaranteed in the league, and they come
hard and so That's why you should celebrate them when
(04:49):
you get them, appreciate them as well, and then learn
from it.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
I've known you for a while now, we've done a
lot of work together. But I don't know how you'll
take this question. It's about quarterbacks and Bryce Young specifically.
I mentioned Drew Brees a second ago. When Bryce was
coming out of Alabama. One of the very popular comparisons
or things that people said about him was, you know,
he's kind of like Steph Curry at the quarterback position.
But when it came to, you know, actually comparing him
(05:12):
to other previous quarterbacks, Drew Brees did come up a
number of times. Now that was largely I think undersized
quarterback without the rocket arm of Cam Newton Josh Allen,
but he still succeeded in the highest way with you
and your team in New Orleans. As you watch Bryce,
just kind of looking back to some of those comparisons,
do you still see any of Drew Brees when you
watch him play? Or was that a comp that didn't
(05:33):
make sense to you.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
I don't know if it made sense, but I mean
I could get it. Bryce's a lot smaller than Drew.
I mean a lot smaller mean like two inches, sure, yeah,
whatever that means. But at the end of the day,
like I get it, because he's accurate, he has the
ability to anticipate. He hits windows tight window throws that
you know I used to look. Systems and fits matter, right,
(06:00):
It's not just about a coach and a player, and
this player no matter where he went to, no matter
where he was at at the timing as well, like
that wouldn't matter. That's wrong. Not everybody's that type of talent,
Like those are Eric Dickerson's, Dion Sanders, different Hall of Famers,
another level of it, right, the ones that truly truly
changed the game, and Drew did in his own way,
(06:21):
so he will be a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 7 (06:22):
But Drew wasn't a Hall of Famer till he got.
Speaker 5 (06:25):
With Sean Payton, and Sean Payton wasn't a Hall of
Fame type of coach that he got with Greg Williams
on defense, right, So it's these effects with the players
that all matched at the right time to help you
achieve what you're able to achieve. Because Drew isn't Drew
without the Saints in that journey trajectory where he had
all these he had Colston, Devree Henderson, you know Lance More.
(06:48):
He also had Robert Meacham, you know, Jimmy Graham, all
these players that came in that fed into this offense,
Jeremy Shockey, Reggie Bush, like you'd go all induced. So
it's different levels of it as well. This thing continue
to evolve. So Drew is and Drew without Sean and
Shawn isn't Sewan without Greg and that whole Saint Super
Bowl run with Zilma and all the guys on defense
(07:10):
as well. So Will Smith included Charles Grant, So that
part all helps. It's not just singular one person with everybody.
Does that make sense. It's not just a talent that
was able to travel and pick up and go and
still be great no matter where he was. That's different
as far as Hall of Fame talk.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Okay, all right, well, let let's pivot back to the
SEC here because I've got some interesting things to ask you,
some really big stuff happening this week, and I want
to start with Oklahoma. You know, that was a big
game last week in Norman against Auburn, and you know,
Oklahoma comes out on top twenty four to seventeen. The
officiating was a big part of that story, Jackson Arnold
saying his old team, all that stuff, but Oklahoma gets
(07:50):
to win. But then we find out yesterday that John
Mattier is going to be out for the foreseeable future.
Was the Heisman, you know, leading odds to win the
Heisman at this point in the season. What does that
to their season? His injury and where do you think
Oklahoma goes from here?
Speaker 5 (08:05):
Clearly it can derail it. But luckily you saw last
year that you know, the committee, those that pick, they
do take injuries into account and so they have a
four or five game stretch where you hopefully he's able
to come back still better. I don't even know what
the injury is, you know, so, yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
A hand or thumb, right, like a thumb injury.
Speaker 5 (08:26):
How did it happen? What? Like? I don't even know.
I'd have to have way more details right for me
to actually like really really speak on it. But it
can totally derail this This Oklahoma team who's really really
good on defense. So they'll be in a lot of
games because of their defense and their defensive line specifically.
But outside of that, you know, the committee does weigh
(08:49):
into account about the injuries hopefully you know by the
time he comes back to have a chance, but he
has to protect himself. I've I've noticed that about Geometerier
all year long. It's great, but Oklahoma at some point
had to gain a traditional run game. That has been
their one weakness is being able to run the football
from the running back position consistently. John Mattier's been able
(09:09):
to make plays with them with his legs, but you
don't want to win that way long term. The SEC
season's way too long, way too physical. That's why they
don't run him in the league. And the SEC is
as close as you want to get to the league.
So that's just part of the game. But we're going
to see if you lose two games, you can still
get in the playoffs. They said that last year.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
That's true, and I'm looking at the SEC standings right now,
and much like other conferences, it doesn't look like we
thought it would look. As we go into week five
of the college football season. Currently, Ole miss sitting atop
the conference at two and o LSU. Of course, you
know they were expected to be in the mix. But
the Missouri Tigers sitting near the top of the conference
right now. They just beat South Carolina this past week
(09:50):
in twenty nine to twenty ran the ball pretty much
at will and they overcame a nice night from Lenora's
sellers too. How good is Missouri in your mind?
Speaker 5 (09:58):
I think Missouri is a really good team because they
know who they are. They got a really good running
back and Ahmad Hardy, who's the perfect marriage for this
outside zone stretch run team both. Ubula throws the ball
a lot better than I. I didn't know. I just
didn't know. I was ignorant to the sense of how
good he could actually throw the ball because pennsy never
asked him to do that. So so that that's kind
(10:22):
of the perfect marriage with the right synergy. Some of
the guys on the outside, Marquise Johnson a wide receiver
number two, he's making some plays and you know, so
they're they're fitting together. They also have a long schedule
ahead of them, and so Missouri has a chance, an
outside chance too if you do go down, go down
just enough, or lose the right games, and they have
(10:43):
an outside chance definitely to be in the playoffs. And
if not, then just go win them all and keep
it rolling. So Missouri is a really good team who
knows they are. They rotate a lot of different guys,
and Josiah Trotter, I think I talked to him about
you last week or the week before you did the defense.
The dude is a player. I'm telling you, nobody's watching,
(11:03):
but like he he shows up on tape. That's all
I'm saying. That's all I know. And also the other
thing about Missouri that I like is their corners tackle.
And so for me and an NFL terms mindset, Kyle,
you know that's how tark A try and come from
this base of that. The toughness of your defense will
be judged upon how good your corners tackle, because they
(11:25):
always just crack down. Make the corners tackle. That's how
run games are built, right, I'll run it back and
beat that guy. He don't want to tackle him. Well,
if your DB's and your corners tackle, your a tough defense.
And that's what Missouri shows as well. Those things show
up on tape. And so because of that, they always
got a fighter's chance. I don't care who they're playing
and their whole schedules at home.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
It is yeah, and they just beat South Carolina, which
is where all go next. South Carolina goes back home.
This weekend, they host Kentucky. Kentucky comes into in one.
South Carolina feels like they're in a very big spot
right now. They had lost the previous week Lenora Sellers
went down. You could understand that, but they couldn't find
a way to beat Missouri. And again it's a good team,
but this again feels like they're all big in the SEC.
(12:06):
We know that all these games are important, So that's
I don't want to be.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
I don't want to be.
Speaker 5 (12:09):
I don't say what's a big spot? Right?
Speaker 2 (12:11):
They're all big, but you know you've lost back to
back games and you're zero to two in the SEC.
That's not where you want to be. Critical game, where
where can they get better? What can they do better
against Kentucky to get things back on track and get
this first conference win?
Speaker 5 (12:25):
Run the football? They can't run the ball. Cop They
had negative yards versus Missouri negative and I know that
includes sex, but still negative. Nobody else is doing that,
all right, And so Kyle, I try to look at
the numbers because you know, I have people that helped
me with those things, and so compared to their wins
and losses of last year, right and their wins, they
(12:45):
were rushing back one hundred and ninety some yards one
hundred and eighty, one hundred and ninety yards, and their
losses was one thirties, one to twenties. Dude, they're not
even close to that right now as a team. They're
under hundreds. They're in the eight maybe in the eighties.
So they got to find ways to be more effective
running the football and then Allowora Leonora Sellers and his
(13:07):
great playmaking ability to flourish off of that. They hadn't
been able to do that, and so I don't know
where they go until they're able to show that. Then, Also, defensively,
a team that's able to just run right at them
the way Missouri did will always have an advantage towards
what South Carolina's trying to do, especially if they don't
(13:27):
turn the football over. So South Carolina is big on that. Also,
Swain did not have a return for touchdowns. So special
teams has also been a big reason why this South
Carolina team's been special. So you got to try and
win that game too. So if they don't win that,
then how do they win the game. Ultimately, two out
of the three, you know, defense, special teams offense. You
(13:49):
got to at least win two of those, and last
week they didn't do that, So you got to find
a way to still a possession of something on special
teams as well. All right, that's an advantage.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Let's look to this week then. All right, we got
a big one, and you know what, we don't know.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
Who the quarterback is for Kentucky. I have no idea that. Also,
I have no idea who's gonna play quarterback. I believe
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
I believe you.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
But the game that more people are going to care
about this weekend, Alabama Georgia, both teams do, I know
you do. Most people will both teams coming off of
bye weeks. Alabama thumped Wisconsin. They've had the week to
get healthy. Georgia got out of Knoxville with a big win.
They get the week to get healthy. How do you
feel about this matchup? Obviously you know both these teams well,
Alabama better, but you know, I think Tyz Simpson's played
(14:30):
pretty well. It's a three and a half point game
according to Vegas in Georgia's favor. How do you think
this thing plays out?
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Well? Number one? Kyle, I'm so excited that I'm going
to be there in Athens for this game. Really fun.
The atmosphere of the environment, it's going to be awesome.
Shout out SCC nation. I'll be there. But anyways, the
crazy thing is, I don't really know how this game
is going to play because there's so many emotions and
(14:58):
everything involved in this. All Right, Kirby Smart lost like
one game at home since like twenty nineteen, and the
fans are literally like, can Kirby do it? Right? Can
he actually beat Alabama? That's crazy? They sound bananas and
they know that, and so you have those emotions that
are into it. And also it's also Alabama beating Georgia's
(15:20):
kind of what they do, so how are their confidence going?
But then at the end of the day, that's off
the field. On the field, specifically, Tennessee showed that Georgia
can be beat downfield, and Alabama naturally has this offense
that they want to be a downfield passing team. They
want to attack teams vertically down the field, threaten them
in two to three four different layers of their defense vertically,
(15:44):
and they have the receivers to do it. Really, good guys,
NFL guys on both players three receivers will be drafted
or have NFL potential on Alabama's roster. That's not a question,
not even counting the younger ones. Hey kids, chill, sorry
about that and oh life, Kyle, you already know it.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Yeah, And so.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
That is a if Alabama can protect the quarterback. And
so Alabama's starting to try and build some things out
to be able to make ty Simpson calm down, make
protect him when he's protected and feels comfortable. He's played
really well exactly what you led to, Kyle. He has
done well when his feet are not all over the place.
What Florida State did to him speed him up, He wasn't.
(16:25):
You could just tell he's playing at a different pace
versus where he's played the last few weeks. And so
that part is has to play a part in it.
Protecting him first and then allow him to make the
right decisions. He will do that, and so and George
is not unbeatable defensively, and so all of those aspects
played the very very interesting side of it. And also
(16:46):
Alabama has defensively did not play well versus Florida State,
and so those things are out there too. How can
Georgia test Alabama's eye discipline on defense and then go
attack them vertically because they showed the ability to be
able to do that too. It's gonna be a lot
of different ways. I'm really excited about this.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
I'm pumped to I really am.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
All right, last thing, LSU O miss in Oxford this
Saturday tonight. We have we talked to your to our
friend Ryan McGee on the show yesterday. He joined us
every Tuesday. Yeah, I can't wait for time. I am
so excited about this thing tonight. The many lives of
Lane Kiffin on ESPN. I mean, it's a massive game.
Do they do they win, They're favored slightly at home?
(17:26):
Who do you like here?
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Uh? Number one? I will not tell you about.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Okay, you got to do that Saturday, right, That's that's fair.
Speaker 5 (17:33):
You already know that I will talk to you about
the game. For me. What I'm looking at this is
the stat you ready for it? There we go, Kyle,
I'll give you some juice, all right. This is what
I do know. This L s U defense has been
the biggest surprise in the SEC so far. They've been
lights out. Okay. They they got corners that can cover,
they got safeties, that are smart and know what they're doing.
(17:56):
I think Blake Baker described him as being on their
all in their on the NFL terms, their contract year,
a lot of seniors, a lot of guys coming together.
They're all here for a reason, trying to win everybody
by it in right, that's great, it's a great place
to be, right. So this LSU defense is different, but
they have not faced a running quarterback like this Trinidad Tamblas,
(18:17):
who's played a lot of ball. Right, reps matter. All
the quarterbacks that are struggling in college football right now
haven't had as many reps. This dude, Trinidad Tamblas has
had reps at Farris eight and other places. All right,
he's a fifth year guy. He's played a lot of ball,
and he's a running quarterback as well as throwing the ball.
He can throw it as well. Right. But last year
(18:38):
versus running quarterbacks, LSU's defense, I know they weren't as good,
but they got crushed in this Jayala Molrow one hundred
and eighty five yards, four touchdowns. All right, Marcel Reid
who didn't even start the game, nine carries, sixty plus yards,
three touchdowns. They haven't faced this. So how does LSU
control the quarterback run? I gotta know that to me
(18:59):
would be the determined factor in this game if they
don't patrol the quarterback run.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Oh, miss Winz, I'm looking forward to it Anyboddy, We've
kept you long enough. Thank you for the time. We'll
do it again next Wednesday. Save travels, all right, man?
Thanks Bro Ruman Harper hanging out with us on a
Wednesday seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten. Has
anybody in the history of sports been hated to the
degree and for the length of time that Lane Kiffin
was hated? That documentary comes out tonight. We'll talk about
(19:25):
this on the other side, but The Many Lives of
Lane Kiffin comes out tonight. On the ESPN, Ryan McGee
authored this thing. I mean, obviously it was a team
effort over to ESPN, but Ryan McGee aur Tuesday guest
on the show. We love Ryan. He's, you know, the
main voice in this thing. And I saw some of
the clips last night. A lot of it was Al
Davis hiring Lane with the Raiders, then of course firing
(19:46):
Lane with the Raiders, taking JaMarcus Russell when Lane apparently
wanted Calvin Johnson. But in terms of the hate that
Lane Kiffin received and was sustained for such a long time.
I everybody hated this guy, and many people still do.
Does anybody compare that comes to mind? I mean, does
does Urban Meyer? Is our Urban Meyer comparable? We'll talk
(20:08):
about it on the other side. Sports Radio ninety two
seven wfn Z big thanks to Roman Harper, two time
(20:29):
Pro bowler, Super Bowl champion, SEC Network analysts, for hanging
out with us each and every Wednesday here on the show.
Always a fun conversation. We ended the talk with the
mention of tonight's debut of what I think is going
to be an awesome ESPN documentary. This is a thirty
for thirty, right? Is that it's not? I forget, so
it's not a thirty Okay, thank you for correcting me
on that way.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
They don't really do that many.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
I brought that up because I was just wondering, are
they still even producing thirty for thirties at this point?
Speaker 3 (20:55):
It's a lot more few and far between now, right.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
I mean, obviously that was the brainchild of Bill Say,
and he's not He's long since left the network, but
they were.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
Still doing them after Bill Simmons.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Left right, But it seems they've more or less now
punted on you know, any which I don't really get
because there are lots of stories that could still be told.
I can't imagine they've run out of great stories to tell.
And that's honestly one of the greatest inventions ESPN has had.
Oh yeah, ever, no, I mean that was I think
for a while there you could buy the complete thirty
for thirty.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
I guess they were DVD.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
Set, the first volume like the original like you nobody buys.
Does anybody still buy DVDs? Do they still sell DVDs
where Walmart?
Speaker 3 (21:32):
Yes? Really, I just haven't paid attention. All right, I
guess we're back.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
Yeah, that's the technology in the AS system saying yes,
you idiot.
Speaker 3 (21:54):
Do you not see the bens of DVDs that are
still I don't.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
I really don't be honest with you. I don't make
many trips to Walmart these so anyway, the point being, though,
we got The Many Lives of Lane Kiffin on tonight,
and I caught some clips from it last night, and
I was already looking forward to it, but especially so
now because I remember the Tennessee stretch. I remember the
Southern cal Stretch. More than happy to go revisit them,
because I'm sure we're going to learn lots of details
about these things tonight. But I don't remember the Raiders
(22:21):
Al Davis stuff as well as I thought I did,
and so I'm really looking forward to that.
Speaker 4 (22:27):
I'm trying to think he wasn't really hated during that period,
because I think a lot of the hate went understandably
so to al Davis, right, because this is full Neander fall.
Al Davis just off his rocker era. That's when he
had a projector when he fired Lane kiffin and said.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
Said, oh we drafted JaMarcus Russell over Calvin Johnson, good
over it, right, right, right.
Speaker 4 (22:48):
I don't think he was really hated there in that time,
But when he got to Tennessee, that's when it came,
and it came in full force.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
But if you haven't seen it, there's going to be
a clip or rather, you know, scenes in this thing
tonight of the day that Al Davis fired Lane Kiffen
and just put him on blast, didn't just fire him,
didn't just announce it, but came with like a projector
and like notes of all the things that Lane had
done wrong and called him a liar basically, So I'm
looking forward to it. But I asked the question, in
(23:14):
the modern era, especially, has anybody, any sports figure, any
coach really, especially coach been hated to the degree and
for the length of time that Lane Kiffin has been hated.
And the only name that I can really come up
with is Urban Meyer. Like polarizing off the field, on
the field, arrogance, program scandals, Florida, Ohio State, Jacksonville, the
(23:38):
retirement drama made him one of the most disliked coaches
of all time. On top of that, Urban Myer's about
the only guy that I think will compare, and Urban
won national championships at multiple stops. Lane Kiffin certainly hasn't
done that, even though he's been good.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
I'll say, was he as hated though in his early days?
Who Urban? Yeah? No, it was not you tall on
early Florida like.
Speaker 4 (23:58):
It wasn't until late in the Florida game light in
the Florida era and basically his entire Ohio State tenure
when he was hated.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
John Calipari's come in a number of times on the
text line Yeah, yeah, I think John. But the thing
is John's got the title. John's also, John's very charismatic
and always has been. There are a lot of people
who do like John, and you could say the same
thing now for Lane Kiffin. But there was a period
of time where nobody had anything good to say about
(24:29):
Lane Kiffin. Someone said, Nick Saban a minute ago, maybe
after the Dolphin stint, I guess given the way that
he said he was never leaving, he wasn't going back
to college, he was going to do quit asking, I'm
not gonna and then, of course does it immediately.
Speaker 3 (24:41):
ESPN did a whole montage of every time he said
that too.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
By the way, yeah, yeah, Christian Latner's come in a
number of times on the text line two. But again
that one's a little bit different because he also made
you hate him because he was very good at Duke.
They won titles when he was there at Duke, Like
it's not hard to hate guys who win big, whereas
with Lane, it was very much about his personality, his
lack of loyalty, leaving in the middle of the night,
feeling like he was the poster child for nepotism because
(25:07):
he was Moni's son, and jumping the line ahead of
other qualified coaching candidates. There were just so many things
that people hated about Lane Kiffin.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
And people also in Tampa hate Lane Kiffin still probably
to this day, because remember when he took the Tennessee job.
MANI left after the Monday Night disaster here in Carolina, right,
and a lot of people thought MONI just gave up.
He gave up on the team and that led partially
to the collapse where they were nine to three and
they finished nine and seven, where ironically, the last game
where he still had a chance to make the playoffs,
(25:35):
the Bucks lost at home to the Oakland Raiders and
JaMarcus Russell and what was arguably JaMarcus Russell's best game
as a pro. So for the whole full circle moment,
here's one that I follow, and he's one of those
guys that if he's on your team, you love him,
but outside of that people hate him, and understandably so,
Buddy Ryan.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
Yeah, yeah, I get that. I do. I get that one.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
And honestly, the whole Ryan family, Sean Payton's come in
a lot on the text line since I brought this up,
and I don't want to nitpick, because everybody's different. Nobody
has walked the same path as Lane Kiffin, you know.
But Sean was in one place for a long time,
and you hated him because he won. You also hated
him because of you know, the scandal, you know, and
the bounties and everything else there was, certainly, so I
(26:19):
think he's definitely in the conversation. But I bring this
up again because I don't think there's anybody who truly
compares to Lane getting an NFL job at thirty one
with the most mercurial owner in the NFL, flaming out
in ugly fashion, but then continuing to quote unquote fail
upward into more jobs and more opportunities, and even when
(26:39):
he got fired, Nick Saban opened his arm for wayward
coaches in Alabama to come in and rehab in Tuscaloosa.
It's the greatest success, right, and it's set him back
upon a course of being a head coach in major
college football and going to Boca and then finding his
way to Ole Miss Like. It's just there aren't many stories.
There's no other story like Lane Kiffin. And it's why
I'm just thrilled about this documentary tonight. I can't wait
(27:01):
to watch it.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
I didn't say two his Usc Tenure was screwed from
the jump because Pete Carroll left, and if you look
at the records, it's like, oh, he actually did a
pretty good job. But then again us he still had
their high expectations. And it's funny now because I'd argue
the only coach, like you think of all the coaches
that replaced Lane Kiffin at USC, who's been better than
(27:22):
link Kiffin at USC ever since.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
Nobody, not even Lincoln, No, he hasn't. Clay Hilton certainly wasn't. Yeah,
I just again, I can't wait to watch this thing.
So the real quick the names that are coming in
on the text line, moon Man said, Josh McDaniels has
a lot of stuff against him.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
Definitely hated.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
That's a good one too, Like, actually, I liked that one,
maybe as much as he out of the Colt job.
Backing out of the Colt job. But you know the
way things ended in Denver with t Bow, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (27:50):
I tak like he won the Super Bowl when he
beat the Patriots when they were like six and oh
and then they collapsed in one of the biggest collapses
in NFL history in two thousand and nine.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
I like that one a lot. Bruce Pearl's on the
text line a number of times. Of course, he's in
the news this week. He's retired at Auburn. His son Steve,
speaking of nepotism, will take over at Auburn. You showed
this to me, by the way, was it stephen A.
Smith who was going off about nepotism and lebron James
And what was the tweet that you showed me the
other day?
Speaker 3 (28:18):
I know it was a screenshot from All Flam, That's
what it was.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
So Steven A was going off about Bronnie James and
nepotism and how it's you know, never been more rampant
in the United States, and Bruce Pearl weighs in with
a quote tweet and it's like, preach stephen A, pre
preach stephen A. And here's Bruce Pearl stepping down in
a very precisely timed manner allah Tony Bennett at UVA
to ensure that his son Steven gets the job at Auburn,
(28:43):
much like Tony Bennett steped down a year ago to
ensure that Ron Sanchez would at least get a shot. Now,
that's not nepotism, but you know the timing of it.
I think was deliberate in that all of these guys
want to be Dean Smith so bad. Huh yeah, retire
in September. Yeah, at least Bill Gruffer's got to two
final fours. Yeah, that's a good That's it's really good.
All right, these real quick. Rick Patino's come in. He's
been pretty hated, although for different reasons. Uh, Bill Lambier,
(29:05):
I didn't expect to see that one. Bobby Petrino has
come in a few times.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
Bill Lambier is actually a really good one. And Bobby Patrino, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Bobby Knight has also Yeah, Bobby was hated, but Bobby
was hated because he was a jerk andy one and
he was in one place for a very very long time.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
And now he's hated for different reasons. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
this is interesting. All right.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
I got more Panthers questions coming into I want to
pivot back to something local, but tonight's going to be
a lot of fun. I think to watch this documentary.
Caleb and Lincolnton asks who do you think is emerging
as tight End one, KB, Tommy Tremble or j T.
Sanders keep pounding, Well, I mean we got to take
j T. Sanders out of the equation for now. High
ankle spraying earlier this week was announced that he'll be
out for a couple of weeks. I assume that means
(29:47):
James Mitchell's gonna get a helmet this week. Although the
rookie Mitchell Evans played more snaps in the win over
the Falcons, I don't think he was targeted at all
though in the passing game.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
Was he was? He targeted? Oh that's right, he was?
Speaker 2 (29:58):
Yeah, yea yeah, jinro Yeah. But I mean I noticed
him more for you know, some blocking special teams things
like that. I wonder if he gets more looks in
the passing game this weekend, or you know, do they
use James Mitchell with j T. Sanders out. That's one
of those things that you and I talked about. But
it is definitely a storyline to watch going into New England.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
Down JT.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Sanders, who I think was really starting to come along
these last couple of weeks. He had a frustrating drop
or two week one against Jacksonville and that really horrible
overturn against the Arizona Cardinals.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
But he's made some catches.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
I think he's run some really nice routes looks like
he's gotten more comfortable, and so to lose j T
Sanders right now, I don't think you can't overstate what
a blow that is to this offense at the moment.
Speaker 4 (30:41):
Yeah, and it's also frustrating too, because you think back
to last year when JT.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
Sanders got hurt.
Speaker 4 (30:46):
Before that, he had about a good two to three
week stretch of playing games, and when he came back,
it just it didn't feel like the same. It took
him a while to get back into the rhythm, and unfortunately,
by the time he kind of got back into that rhythm,
it was the end of the season.
Speaker 3 (30:59):
So that's kind of to concern you have with j T.
Sanders going forward.
Speaker 4 (31:03):
I will say, maybe potentially some good news on that front.
According to Joe Person j T Sanders not practicing but
also not wearing the boot at practice today.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Yeah, that's good. So that also sounds pretty good.
Speaker 4 (31:16):
It's one of those situations I feel like he could
be the offensive version of Turk Wharton's injury to where
it sounds pretty bad but also may have not been
as bad as one's fault. Yeah, because I I Turk
Turk's not playing this week, but I could honestly see
Turk playing next week against Miami.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
Yeah. No, I agree with that.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Multiple people have asked about First of all, Gas House
Chip says Excel and Temac did not practice today, so
it might be down three.
Speaker 7 (31:43):
No.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Tararo McMillan made it pretty clear at the end of
practice today at his locker that he expects to play
on Sunday. So unless there's some setback between now and Sunday,
I would expect Tedero McMillan to play, which for the
obvious reasons is huge. Hunter Renfro did not practice today,
but that's because of the of his third child, so
as you would expect, he's out of practice today, but
(32:04):
I would again expect him to play on Sunday. There's
been no indication that he won't, but he didn't practice
today because his wife delivered their third child, So congratulations
to the Renfro family. Xavier Leaguet did not practice today,
and I don't know exactly what that means. I don't
know if the hamstring injury is worse than originally thought,
or if they're taking it extra if they're just taking
extra precaution with him, Like Wednesdays are a day that
(32:27):
a lot of vets, you know, aren't around, but he's
not a vet at this point, so that would indicate
to me that, you know, there's still some tenderness in
the hamstring and they want to take this thing day
by day.
Speaker 3 (32:37):
I don't know what to make of that yet.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
You know, we can't look at New England and say
they have to have him, but you really kind of
also still have to have him in the grand scheme
of things of this season, especially until we find out
when Jalen Cocher gets back and how quickly he can
hit the ground running when he does. And Dave Canlson
make it sound too promising with uh Coker because he
still said week to week when asked about him year today, Uh,
(33:02):
do you want to let people know the guys that
were listed on the injury report but were rest days,
Ric O'dowdell, J C Horn, Taylor Moten, those are the
ones and Taylor just just gonna go ahead and put
that out there. Taylor's gonna not practice every Wednesday for
after the rest of the year and probably for the
rest of his Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (33:20):
Just get used to that and probably get used to
JC being on that list too. Every Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
DJ Wanham didn't practice today because of a hip. That
that's one to keep an eye on, right because Patrick
or Pat Jones also did not practice today because of
the hamstring, and he didn't play Sunday in the win
over Atlanta. So you know, again, this happens in the
NFL every year. Guys get hurt, the injury start to mount.
But you're looking at Carolina like, okay, that's a lot.
(33:44):
You know the injury report today. Ric o'dowdell was limited.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
J C.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
Horn I think was he. I think he was out
there but limited, okay, but it was rest. Pat Jones
did not practice. Xavier league Get didn't practice, Tedoro McMillan
didn't practice. No JT the Standers, no DJ Wantam, no
Turk Wharton, no Hunter Renfro. Some of these we know
and understand. Others of these you worry about it.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
And I'll also say, don't take Wednesdays as the end
all bl for guys that were already on the injury
report and didn't play good week prior Tomorrow I think
will be the first day to really get a good
idea of like if Xavier actually is going to play
this week or not, if Pat Jones is going to
play this week or not. Same thing for DJ wantum
So I just think we got to put that out
there too.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
Wednesday's not the end all bill.
Speaker 4 (34:28):
This is just one of those like warning signs, Hey,
just proceed with caution. Yeah, if they're all, if this
is all the same tomorrow outside of the guys that
were resting.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
You get worried, You get worried. Yeah, I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
