Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Kyle Bailey Show, powered by Victory Chevy Charlotte,
where every month is Truck Month. Victory Chevy Charlotte, your
Silverado destination.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Our number three Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z
emanating live from the Chandler Volta Studios, the Carolinas Personal
Injury Lawyers. One call, that's all go to Cvinjurylaw dot Com.
That's Cvinjurylaw dot Com. Busy five o'clock hour, Chip Patterson,

(00:43):
cbssports dot com and the Cover three Podcast. Back at
five twenty five, we talk all about Alabama Oklahoma tonight,
the three games tomorrow, some of the latest news in
the world of college football. Maybe get his thoughts on Carolina,
Ohio State Duke Texas Tech tomorrow as well. Smoke says
he's boycotting the game tonight Alabama and Oklahoma, but certainly
won't be a boycotting duke in Texas Tech tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Smoke, how are you feeling about that? As a Duke fan?

Speaker 2 (01:07):
You've beaten pretty much every other heavyweight on your schedule,
so I'm sure you feel confident in that game.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
Yeah, I do feel confident, you know, Hopefully they don't
come out as flat as they did against Lipscomb over
to they won't and I don't think they will. They won't,
But I also think that was a good wake up
call to have them before that Texas Tech game, because
they would likely come in flat. And I think John
will have the guys ready to go. If they lose,
I think it'll be a close game. And I'm not

(01:33):
going to be too mad if they lose, just because
they've already won so many of these games. You're not
going to be too mad if they lose this one.
Why just because they've won so many of these games already.
I feel like they were eventually going to trip up
on one of these games.

Speaker 5 (01:49):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
They're at home though, Okay, that is see. I mean
they're at Cameron. This is a game. Listen, Texas Tech
is good. If this was a neutral sight game, I
might be able to r you that right. But Duke
looks to be one of the top five teams in
the country. When you're at home, even against Texas Tech,
this is a game I know you expect to win.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
I do, and I think they should, all right, But
I'm not gonna what I mean by I'm not going
to be upset. It's not I'm not going to be
throwing stuff out the wall and just like, oh my god,
what's the problem here, Just because that would be the
first loss, it'd be like, okay, let's just try to regroup. Plus,
I just remember people losing their minds last year when
he lost two games early in the season, and that

(02:27):
was because this fan base has not been used to
playing this many tough games early in the year.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
Sure, So that's where I'm coming from.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
I get that.

Speaker 6 (02:35):
I do.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
By the way, in c State, fresh off the beatdown
of Texas Southern and the will Wade Rant, they play
again on Sunday, They've got Ole Miss at home, and
then they're off for ten days. They don't play again
until New Year's Eve, when they start the ACC slate
against wake Forest on New Year's Eve in a noon tip.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
And man, I can't believe to say starting out the
ACC almost must win for both sides right in a way?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Wait, is that Duke came to Madison Square Garden spoke?

Speaker 5 (03:05):
I thought it was?

Speaker 3 (03:05):
I thought, why didn't you correct me?

Speaker 5 (03:07):
I don't know you were a Duke fan. You sounded
way more confident than I did. Yeah, but I let
you shut up.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
But because this is the time of year where I
admit that sometimes I lose track of where these games are.
I know we have neutral sit for Carolina and Ohio
State tomorrow. I had just gland, like a cursory glance
at the schedule. I had forgotten the Duke game was
in New York. I can't believe you, of all people,
didn't correct.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Me on that.

Speaker 5 (03:27):
Oh so it's my fault.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
You're the Dupe fan in the room. I'm not the
Duke fan in the room. I watched Duke because we
talked Duke on the show. But I'm not the Duke fan.
I thought you would have corrected me on that. You
love to jump in and correct me when I'm wrong. Yeah,
I know, so I thought you know that. Immediately four
people on the text line reminding me KB the games
at Madison Square Garden.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
I had forgotten about that. I didn't think you would.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
But yeah, MSG for Duke UH and Texas Tech and
then Carolina Ohio State in Atlanta for the seat what
do they call it, think the CBS Sports class?

Speaker 7 (03:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Okay, yeah, so big news in that one. By the way,
Seth trembles back tomorrow, Yes, and That might be the
thing that I'm looking most forward to in the weekend
for teams that aren't my own, is to see a
Carolina team that has been missing a key piece in
Seth Tremble. That front court has been a revelation. Caleb
Wilson looks to be among the best freshmen in basketball,
best two or three, and Henry Vasar is playing his tailoff.

(04:16):
But to get Seth Tremble back as part of that,
I think Carolina can potentially start to take off.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
So and Ohio State, I don't fear them. Pitt beat
him again this year and Pitt's been awful. Hey, this
is one of those games with Carolina. If you're a
tar Heel fan, you just want to see him. Take
care business. Don't make it closer than it needs to be,
because some of these CBA Sports Classic games have been
very close over the years.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
Just take care business.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
If you're North Carolina, the one that's under the most
pressure this weekend is easily stated, this is your last
chance to get a non con win worth something against
Ole Miss.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Don't you think they come out with their hair on
fire after what their coach just said.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
You would think so, but I don't know, we need
to see it happen and too much, and you know,
Will Wade also kind of said it too even into
Kansas game. Too much of the problems they have is
just the kind of sit, sit, sit, hopefully didn't make
that shot with four seconds left on the shot clock,
and then go back on defense offense, Sit sit, sit, sit,
hold the ball, hold the ball, hold the ball, chuck

(05:17):
up a shot and make sure hopefully it works. That's
basically been State's m on offense for most of the year.
They need to fix that. They need to have some rhythm,
You need to have some motion. It needs to be
like a jazz play. But instead it's just falling flat
and E minored the whole entire time.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
E Minor, it's awfully specific. I don't know why I said.
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
I was wondering if that was a reference that I
didn't get, but he just made it up. I did
miss the opportunity for a joke that's being made now
on the text line that you know, it's still a
home game for Duke because it's in the New York,
New Jersey area. So Smoke just flipped you all off.
I'm going to rat him out he just gave you
all the middle finger.

Speaker 5 (05:53):
They did already play the MSG earlier this year.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
They did do that, so they're going back to MSG again,
and plenty of jokes on the text line that it's
still a home game that you know, I was technically
right because you know it's Duke and they're playing in
the New York, New Jersey area. Let's go to the
phone lit Big cats an says, KB has losing records
versus time and schedules. You know what, I got to
eat that because you're right. I often take cursory glances

(06:16):
at schedules and miss the details. Ask my wife, that's
my Life's my wife. Let's go to Panther Bow on
the phone lives. What's going on?

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Bow?

Speaker 7 (06:25):
Okay TV?

Speaker 8 (06:26):
Thanks thinking for my call, And I mean not the
half smokes back here, But I mean, you know, trying
to be right is one of the best things about
being a friend. I mean, you're gonna always try and
keep your friends accountable. That's true, that's just good, clean fun.
I mean, happy football Friday, Happy college basketball Friday.

Speaker 7 (06:43):
We've got a good plate.

Speaker 8 (06:44):
Not to go tan as a ranter on you, but
I mean I'm jacked up I'm pumped up about it.
What I'm interested in is how bad is Purdue going
to be next year? And how much better is a
team like Virginia Tech, who we were kind of looking
at each other a little bit. You guys made one
great coach, like in credit to the what's his name

(07:07):
was it, Brent Key? Is that his name? Yeah, he
was a huge part of that man.

Speaker 7 (07:14):
And the fact they're.

Speaker 8 (07:14):
Keeping them around, I'm like, I'm jealous. I'm jealous because
you know, we're the Purdue fans are looking all You're
getting the Minnesota defensive coordinator, this is terrible fire, the
athletic director. It's like, just everyone just relaxed. This is
an Indiana shout out? Who's your Bobby? I know he's
excited and granted, I will say that it's Texas Tech
and Ohio State shout out Christmas and Supreme and Indiana

(07:39):
that those teams are the ones that look like they're
above the other ones. Those are the ones where I'm like,
someone's gonna be you know, the style of football, you
know whatever. But probably don't have anything else to say
other than just want to call in you guys sound great, man.

Speaker 9 (08:01):
I just wanted to like you know.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
How boys were doing.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
That's all. He didn't really have a purpose. He just
wanted to see how we were doing and yuck it up.
I respect it, bo I do I appreciate it.

Speaker 8 (08:11):
I'm excited to hear Randy's back. I mean, Randy's got
his picks. I'm not saying I've lost money one money
off of his pick, but they are. They are definitely considered,
there's no doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Well, here's the thing I've got him, and I listen,
I appreciate you, buddy. Good to hear from you. Merry
Christmas to you and yours. He is he's deeply invested
in Panthers football right now, like he is. He is
deeply invested in Panthers football like most invested he's been
in NFL football. And oh yeah, no he is. And
I tell people this all the time, Like my dad
was like is. But I mean, like growing up, was

(08:43):
you know, just a quintessential sports fan. But if I
had to Peggett to a couple of things, you know,
he was a NASCAR, baseball, college basketball type of guy.
I love college football too, watch the NFL, but you know,
those were the things that he really loved at least
when I was growing up, and so he watched the NFL.

(09:03):
He liked John Elway, right, But but now I'm getting
text about the Panthers every Sunday, even when he can't
see it, Like he's following the game cast, he's watching
the replays, watching the.

Speaker 5 (09:13):
Highlights get blocked out of the area.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. So like he's more invested than he's
ever been. And so I'm pretty sure he's going to
pick the Panthers here in about thirty five minutes. I
think he's going to. But yeah, I mean he's invested
deeply in Carolina football right now. Dog is up next
on the phone lines, Dog, what's going on?

Speaker 10 (09:33):
What's up?

Speaker 1 (09:34):
Man?

Speaker 10 (09:34):
How y'all going Merry Christmas and all that good stuff?
Now you kind of hurt and feeling a couple of
weeks ago when we boys, so I had the metapaint
and get right, Oh no, I'm sorry, Hey you it's
a job, man, You all right? You can't do me though.

(09:56):
The Kulane and that other school. I don't even know
who it is. We should be in this. We should
have been in the top twelve. And I'm talking about
Notre Dame.

Speaker 8 (10:06):
Smoke uh.

Speaker 10 (10:10):
And uh too. I want to know why come? Why
do you do always? I mean, okay, I'm missed, but
the guys that man, I don't forget what I was
gonna say.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
We got you.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
You can text it if you want. If you want
to hang up and text me what you thought of
I'll try to get to it.

Speaker 10 (10:35):
Okay, I do that.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
Okay, Merry Christmas.

Speaker 8 (10:37):
Dog.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Appreciate the phone call, buddy, text the text line if
you remember it.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Some people do that. That happens.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
But uh, listen as it relates to Notre Dame. Man,
come here, I said at the time. I'll say it again.
They got a case to be in the playoff. I
never argued against that that. That was never my point.

Speaker 4 (10:53):
And I'm never going after JMU because they did what
they were supposed to do.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
That JMU is a proud program.

Speaker 7 (10:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
Now I'm as a Nerd Dame fan, I'm out at Alabama.
That's why I'm not watching the Alabama game. I'm watching
all the other games, but I'm not watching the Alabama game.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Sure, sure, But to me, what I really ripped them into,
what I ripped them for was the behavior of their
athletics director and Pete Mvaqua was, you know, whiny ass
complaining tour, that's all, and going after the acc in particular,
and I was. I truly believe that what I said
then has been more than you know, backed up by
the fact that all these reports indicate that the various

(11:24):
conference commissioners are fed up with the way Notre Dame's
ad was acting the special treatment they're getting freezing out
Notre Dame potentially because of that automatic qualifier into the
top twelve starting next year that we all just learned about.
I mean, truly, brett or Mark going after Pete Vak
will publicly it's not just me and a lot of
other folks that are tired of Notre Dame's sense of
entitlement that was on display via their athletics director.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
That's it.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
That was the only thing.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
And I know we have a listener out there is
like Embrace the Suck or whatever his name is, that
he gets really mad and he screams at me and
Colin and you know other people about not being sympathetic enough.
I guess to Notre Dame it's not about their their
playoff candidacy. I blame the committee for that. The committee
should have never had Notre Dame with a with the
same schedule or rather same record as Miami should have
never had Notre Dame ahead him to begin with. And

(12:09):
if that doesn't happen, the backlash isn't what it is.
But Notre Dame sitting at home, they opted not to
play in the ball game. Do I think they're one
of the best twelve teams in America? Probably, But that's
not the way this thing is set up. So be
mad at the people who structure and organize and run
the college football Playoff.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
Be mad at the.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Committee for handling the week to week rankings the way
that they did. For weeks everybody was screaming, Hey, what
about head to head? What about head to head? And
they just ignored it until they couldn't ignore it anymore,
and they set it up for drama, and they elicited
that exact reaction from Notre Dame fans because of what
they did.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
So that was my stance on all of that smoke.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
Real quick, do you need to point out that apparently
Pete Pavaqua and Jim Phillips did meet up in New
York City earlier today for a two hour meeting.

Speaker 5 (12:51):
Oh wonder how that went. Don't know, but apparently it
did happen.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
I would again fly on the wall, would love to
know how Pete mcvaqua handled that componversation face to face
with Jim Phillips as opposed to what he was saying
through the media directly following the playoff rankings coming out.
But anyway, back to the Panthers here for a minute.
Good news today that we had iky Aquanu back at practice.
Don't know what that means in terms of his performance,

(13:17):
because it sounds like with the audio that we played
from him in the locker room, I think that was
two days ago that the MRI indicated something concerning and
that he didn't want to talk about it. He didn't
want to disclose it, which is obviously his right, But
to me, it indicates pretty clearly that he's going to
play through pain on Sunday if he plays. But he
was at practice today, which indicates he's going to give

(13:38):
it a go. If he can't go. They likely turned
the veteran back up yosh Nyman, who started the opener
when Ikey was out following that preseason appendectomy, which feels
like a decade ago. At this point, you forgot about
the appendectomy, didn't you, Yeah, so you know, if he
can't go, they'll go with Nyman. Also today we find
out I guess completely that Trevin Wallace, because of his
shoulder injury, is also ruled out up for Sunday's game.

(14:01):
Dave Kanal is saying they will start claud and cherylists
at linebacker next to Christian Roseboom, which isn't ideal. I
don't think it's the end of the world. Claud and
Cherlist got starts against the Falcons and the forty nine
Ers earlier this year. He hasn't been great, he hasn't
been perfect. He's a backup for a reason. But he's
a physical, hard hitting guy who should be able to
help in the run game, especially. I wouldn't count on

(14:24):
him to be a positive impact in past coverage. Hopefully
he can be, though, and so claud and Cherlist gets
the start in place of Trevin Wallace on Sunday. We
talked earlier today about Tedero McMillan needing to have a
big game on Sunday because his last three outings have
been rather quiet. He has five total catches in his
last three games. When I talked about that earlier, I

(14:47):
think it was our buddy Stevie Goodwood. I want to
try to find the text who was hitting us up
earlier in the show as we were talking about this,
But he told me they don't throw the ball to him,
how is he supposed to catch it? And I say, well,
that's kind of fair. Like he gets a lot of
defensive attention. It's a combination of Idzick and Canalis needing
to scheme things up a bit better, and McMillan, you know,

(15:10):
needing to fight to get open.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
He's still a rookie after all.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
I know people like to say things, well, he's fourteen
games in, he's not a rookie anymore. I don't buy
that it's still his rookie season. He's never been here
in the NFL. He's never been in this spot. He's
never played in a de facto playoff game like this
in a season this long. He's never played fourteen games
in a season, and he's about to play seventeen. So
they're going to need him to come up big on Sunday.

(15:34):
And yeah, he'll have to fight to get open and
do his job. But Brad Izick and Dave Canalis need
to be at their best all week long in terms
of game prep, but also you know, opening script on Sunday,
getting that kid the best looks available. You know, a
lot of it's on Bryce. He's the signal caller, right,
He's the trigger man. He's got to find Ted McMillan
open often hopefully, but they got to find McMillan and

(15:56):
get him going early in this game. And for Jalen Koker,
it's incredibly important for him to do the same because
they play well off of each other and to avoid
all that defensive attention going to just Teero McMillan.

Speaker 4 (16:05):
And I also think it'll be big if you can
get a pretty big run early going, because what's been
a problem in the last couple of weeks just feels
like the run game hasn't popped the same since Rico
Dawnell's kind of been banged up. If you can get
an early run from Rico Dawell where it's like a
you know, ten to fifteen yard gain, I think that'll
be big.

Speaker 5 (16:22):
Two yeah, in my opinion.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Sure.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
By the ways, when I said that to Stevie, he said, well,
the Seahawks focused on Pooka and Akoua last night. He
still went for two fitty I was two twenty five. Actually,
the inability to get the ball to your best players
is a sign of bad offensive coordinating. That's what Stevie
Goodwood told me. And he's not wrong. Like, he's not
entirely wrong. I mean, you can debate whether or not

(16:44):
to call it bad offensive coordinating, but the best offensive
coordinators do find a way to get the ball in
the hands of their best playmakers, and that's what these
coaches have to do on Sunday.

Speaker 5 (16:53):
The only difference is Pook has actually been here for
a while too.

Speaker 3 (16:56):
Well, thank you.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
The other part of that, too, is he's a veteran
receiver who is very savvy, understands the nuances of the position,
has been at it for a while. And again, Tedoro
McMillan has fourteen games under his belt. Will i Am says,
and the fact we're not even talking about Xavier Leaguet
should tell you all you need to know about the
former first round pick. I want to talk about him.

(17:20):
I want to believe he can have an impact. But
right now, and I'm not saying ever again, but right now,
are you going into Sunday thinking, man, I sure hope
that Xcel can have a really big Well, of course
we all hope that, But is it even part of
your mindset going into Sunday that Xcel could have a
really big day individually.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
No, If he gets a catch, that's cool, but it's
usually only one catch and then you don't hear that
much from him afterwards.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
Yeah, I mean, I'm not.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
It's not really part of my consciousness going into this game.
Good news earlier today, my guy David Moore back at
practice on Wednesday. I guess that was acclear Wednesday was
back to practice.

Speaker 5 (18:01):
It's actually questionable for the game.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
I know, like you, people will make fun of me,
but I think David Moore could have been helping this
passing game all along.

Speaker 5 (18:10):
Well that and kick return.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
Yes, like no, no offense at you, but I think
I'd rather have David Moore out there than Chebu Hubbard
as a kick returner.

Speaker 3 (18:19):
Oh dude.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
When he went down against the Patriots, I was all
that nasty injuries, brutal, but especially in that game. It
was early on where I forget what the exact sequence
of events was, but the first play, first play, right.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
It was ind a round, He got eleven yards, got
the first down, and then oh he's hurt. And then
they come back and they showed a cart and I'm like, oh,
he's oh yeah, So I'm actually kind of surprised he's
back this quickly.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
Yeah, me too. All right, we'll put a pen in it.
We'll come back.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
We'll talk to Chip Patterson of CBS Sports dot com,
Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z. All Right,
the FanDuel text lines jumping here on a Friday. We'll

(19:02):
take your Monday headlines today. Those were hot to start
the show. We'll try to bring them back. But Monday
headlines today, Panthers Bucks, a de facto playoff game and
everything on the line. What do you think happens? What
do you think we're talking about on Monday? Where I
think the entire Refinz staff will be in for Monday's
Panther Monday Reaction Show, and then we're all off to
the Christmas holiday, So tune in Monday for whatever happens.

(19:25):
But what do you think the headlines will be? Panthers
Bucks edition will also take your college football playoff Monday
headlines today, and much of that conversation will happen right
now with Chip Patterson of cbsports dot Com CBS Sports
Network and the Cover three podcast Chippy Chip back with
us for a football Friday conversation.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
What's going on? Chip? How are you?

Speaker 7 (19:45):
I could not.

Speaker 8 (19:45):
Make this up.

Speaker 7 (19:46):
I will tell this to you because I think.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
You can appreciate it, and I'm sure that some portion
of your listening audience can as well or has memories
of it. But I mentioned to you that we had
the Christmas program earlier today. That means Christmas break starts,
and so of course at five point twenty, my three
year old has just thrown up. So Christmas breaks off
to a roar and start.

Speaker 7 (20:05):
Cause it be like that sometimes.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Wow, Oh no, I know, I get it, buddy.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
You know, one in the family's gonna get it. Like
by the time, like from the end to when you're
going back at the beginning of the new year, someone
in your family is going to.

Speaker 7 (20:17):
Get bitten by the bug.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
You just hope to contain the pestilence to make sure
it doesn't spread, especially close to the twenty two.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
Oh my household just finally kicked it all out the
door this week. Chip, So I'm thinking I'm thinking. No,
I'm thinking about you, because we went through it over
the last week. So God bless you, buddy. I appreciate
you for making the time still and good. We'll make
it efficient. Alabama Oklahoma tonight. You know this is We've
seen this, this this game already once this year. Oklahoma

(20:45):
got the best of Alabama. We got some key injuries tonight.
But these are two heavyweight programs going at it in
the first round of the playoff on a Friday night.
What are your general expectations.

Speaker 8 (20:55):
Well, I do.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
Lean with the general expectation that we have with this
being you know, among the lowest totals you know, in
college football playoff history, small sample size just the last
you know, eleven twelve.

Speaker 7 (21:06):
Years or so. But still, we've got two defense that
we got it.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Oklahoma defense is really good.

Speaker 7 (21:12):
We've got two offenses that have you know, they just
kind of.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
Do enough to get it done. That's not what we
thought was going to be the case when ty Simpson
started with twenty touchdowns to just one interception to start
the year. But I mean that Alabama offense hasn't scored
thirty points against an FBS opponent since mid October, So
I mean, are they going to be able to flip
a switch playing on the road at night against Brent

(21:35):
Vinable is one of the best defenses in the country.
Like that's kind of where the matchup hinges. I will say,
from like a conversation narrative standpoint, I'm glad that you
mentioned like proud program, blue blood heavy weight because it's
also a little bit of an anxiety bowl because Oklahoma
and Alabama fans have a standard and they know what
it should look like. And I think that Oklahoma and

(21:56):
Alabama fans both look at their team and can honestly say,
we probably can't win the national championship, like we probably
don't have what it takes to be able to win
this whole thing.

Speaker 7 (22:07):
But I tell you what, Alabama and Oklahoma fans definitely
don't want to be.

Speaker 1 (22:11):
It's the very first team eliminated from the college football Playoff, right,
I mean, this is one of those games where it
is it is.

Speaker 7 (22:19):
You want to win, but man, you really don't want
to lose because sort of the egg on the face.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
Of an SEC national championship winning and contending program that
would be that would almost be the embarrassment. There would
be a more impact than whatever the joy would be
from winning. So a little bit of an anxiety ball
at Norman Oklahoma tonight.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
I get that. I mean who is the quarterback battle
in this game? Which quarterback would you put money on
to play better tonight?

Speaker 1 (22:46):
I think that Kyle Simpson, if he's healthy, gives you
a better chance with the downfield passing game. I think
he sees it better. I think he throws it better.
I think he's got more good weapons. But I do
think that the apeability and the mobility.

Speaker 7 (23:01):
Of John Mattier could end up being the reason Oklahoma wins.

Speaker 1 (23:05):
So if for just talking individual performance, I'll take Tys
Simpson and think he doesn't turn the ball over quite
like he did against the Sooners.

Speaker 7 (23:12):
Last time out. But if you want to say who
has a.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
Bigger impact on the game, I think that might be
John Mittier.

Speaker 3 (23:17):
Okay, fair enough.

Speaker 2 (23:18):
Let me pause on the playoff for a quick second,
because I just double checked the screen a minute ago.
Right now, in C State is just whooping Memphis in
the Gasparilla Bowl thirty one to seven. This will be
a nice exclamation point for Dave Dorn and company to
end the season with eight wins. He's coming back. As
you and I discussed a couple of times throughout the.

Speaker 3 (23:37):
Course of the year. We know that.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
Now, just your thoughts on the immediate future of NC
State football.

Speaker 1 (23:43):
I mean, it's going to be on whether or not
they can get CJ.

Speaker 7 (23:46):
Bailey on the twenty twenty six roster.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
I mean, that's the thing is that I cannot watch
this game without seeing the plays he's making in the
first half, but then also seeing the hits.

Speaker 7 (23:56):
That he's taken.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
Now that memphis Is defense has just decided they're going
to blitz on every down, which, by the way, interim
skeleton coaching staff, they're down by a bunch. They've decided
they're gonna blitz, and I'm like, hey, NC State, let's
go max protect and not give Dja any reasons to.

Speaker 7 (24:12):
Go ahead and run out.

Speaker 1 (24:13):
He's he's taking some shots here in the second half
of this football game.

Speaker 7 (24:17):
But it's kind of kind of made.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
Me be like, oh, let's let's maybe let's see what
Will Wilson.

Speaker 7 (24:22):
Wants to do for the rest of the game. But yeah,
I mean, the outlook is good. And I do think
that for Dave, who.

Speaker 1 (24:28):
Had lost five trade Bowl games, right, I mean, that's
that had been something that had been nagging INC State fans.
He would take you from the High and beating North
Carolina and then you kind of take this big drop
after not getting a bowl win to be able to
be an exclamation point on the season. If they're able to,
you know, play out these last what are we looking
at like nine and a half minutes, be able to

(24:48):
have a similar score like this, maybe tack on one more,
just a dominant bowl win against a competitive team, even
if it is from the American without its head coach.

Speaker 9 (24:58):
I do think that that's a good thing.

Speaker 7 (24:59):
But you know, this is modern college football.

Speaker 1 (25:01):
When you got a player of CJ about Bailey's talent
after the.

Speaker 6 (25:04):
Season that he had, Yeah, it has to be all
focused on whether that's old, whatever it's going to take,
and then either finding another quarterback.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
If not, or making sure that he's got enough pieces
to be successful if he is.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
Chip Patterson, cbsports dot Com, Cover three podcasts, Hanging out
with us here on a Friday. What did you think
of Nick Saban yesterday on the McAfee show, comparing to
Lane and James Madison being in the playoff to allowing
the triple A champion of Minor league baseball to participate
in the World Series. The gist is for anybody who
didn't see it. Nick does not believe that the group
of five belongs in the College Football Playoff.

Speaker 3 (25:41):
Any thoughts on that.

Speaker 7 (25:43):
I did.

Speaker 1 (25:44):
This is the first time I truly missed it, so
I can't speak to.

Speaker 7 (25:50):
The full comment.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
I disagree.

Speaker 7 (25:54):
I kind of.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
Think that once you've expanded beyond four wied in the
field so much that the product is already cheapened, you know.

Speaker 7 (26:04):
And then at that point I'd rather go.

Speaker 1 (26:06):
Back to competitive integrity or just the idea of a
national championship. And I you know, if you're gonna make
it this big and we're going to be arguing about
teams with two and three losses, then I don't want
to have I don't want to take the next steps
of saying, well, you got to have this kind of
roster or you got to have this kind of power rating,

(26:27):
because I mean, Kyle at that point is just a
dev ball, right. If your daddy had this much money
and you're this pretty and you joined this sorority, well
then yeah you can go and you can participate in
this invitational, and like, I just that's that to me?
Is uh, it is extremely disappointing because I've heard people say,

(26:49):
but you know, if you let conference champions in, You're
gonna have these wild point spreads.

Speaker 7 (26:54):
And I'm like, yeah, who cares?

Speaker 1 (26:56):
I say, well, well then no one will watch. And
I'm like, well, are you.

Speaker 7 (26:58):
A television executive, because.

Speaker 1 (27:01):
I mean the players for James Madison, the coaches, the staff,
the players for Tulane, the coaches, the staffs, their families
like they're having.

Speaker 7 (27:11):
An all time moment right now.

Speaker 1 (27:13):
So yeah, excuse me if I'd rather see that than
the sixth best team from the SEC or the fifth
best team from the Big Ten.

Speaker 7 (27:20):
So I disagree with the notion.

Speaker 1 (27:23):
Again, I did not hear his comments specifically, but if
we've gotten this playoff too big already where they're more
of the field than not, I just don't think have
a chance to win at all.

Speaker 7 (27:34):
And so for that reason, I would rather.

Speaker 1 (27:37):
Take teams that have won championships than the fifth or
sixth best team from a bigger conference.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
Okay, so then those two games, those two teams.

Speaker 2 (27:45):
James Madison is a twenty and a half point favorite
in Eugene to Lane a seventeen and a half point
favorite in Oxford, more likely to cover who is it?

Speaker 7 (27:55):
Two Lane?

Speaker 1 (27:56):
And I know they got smoked first first go round.
But I do think that there is there's enough of
a chance that, given the chaos around ole Miss, that
that could be something that plays a little bit into
the Green Waves favor. But you'll be able to tell
early because when Jake Rhettslash played against ole Miss in

(28:18):
Week four, he was oh for his first nine pass attempts,
finished five for seventeen for fifty six yards, and was
benched for Brendan Sullivan. And I just have to think
that was his fourth game, like his seventh week with
the program total and after a full season and thinking

(28:39):
about the mobility and what he can do with his legs,
like let let Tulane start to make Pete golden sweat
and let's see what happens.

Speaker 7 (28:47):
I mean, this is an ole Miss.

Speaker 1 (28:48):
Team that has a lot of LSU coaches on it,
and probably, if we're being honest, Kyle has some future
LSU players on it too.

Speaker 7 (28:56):
I got to imagine it's been a unique couple of weeks, and.

Speaker 1 (29:00):
That ain't even just about Lane Kiffin Leavin. I mean everybody,
the fourteen old Miss staffers are following him to LSU. Heck,
you got three LSU staffers that are about to go
join Pete Golden Staff at ole Miss next year. There's
enough chaos going on that I think the talent gap
might be able to be lessons And I also think
that there are lessons that John Summer all can learn

(29:23):
from the first meeting that can benefit them.

Speaker 7 (29:25):
For James Madison, it's your first time playing Oregon. It's
your first time.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
Feeling what it's going to be like when that team
hits the end Austin Stadium in Eugene. So I would
say that the short trip from New Orleans to Oxford,
the chaos around both of the programs might get too
lane a fighting.

Speaker 3 (29:40):
Chance, all right, Last thing, real quick.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
If you're Ohio State awaiting your opponent in the Cotton Bowl,
who would you rather see Texas A and m or Miami.

Speaker 1 (29:49):
I think I would rather play Miami.

Speaker 7 (29:51):
No, no, no, hold on. I think I would.

Speaker 1 (29:56):
Rather play Miami because when when you've got that kind
of when you've got that kind of turnover potential, especially
when they face pressure, I think that that's where since
Carson Beck doesn't have the escapability of Marcel Reid, I
think that I would rather be able to take my
Ohio State defenders and let them te off against beck

(30:18):
as opposed to read. But I kind of think the
Buck guys they're gonna have some a chip on their shoulders.

Speaker 7 (30:26):
I think the first game that they play.

Speaker 1 (30:28):
Against Miami or Texas A and M might be one
of their best of the college football playoff in terms of.

Speaker 7 (30:33):
I'm expecting dominance.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
Like I think that they will be absolutely capital o
on capital I it from the kickoff, just based on
the way that things ended in the lost to Indiana.

Speaker 3 (30:45):
Chip, Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Speaker 2 (30:46):
Go take care of those babies and we'll talk to
you next week.

Speaker 1 (30:48):
My friend Mary Christmas back as this sounds good, y'all
be well.

Speaker 2 (30:52):
Chipattersoncbsports dot Com, CBS Sports Network in the Cover three
podcast with us each and every Friday here on the show,
Mark size Matter says, I like this guy, me too.
We've been doing radio together for like fifteen years. He's
the best. We do have some people pushing back on well,
plenty of things. It's the text line, after all. But
right now we go to smoke on the headlines.

Speaker 4 (31:15):
All right, do have the Hornets injury report out in Kyle.
It's smoke looking better. Let's go Grant Williams is still
out with his knee. Colin Sexton is doubtful, but that's
still better than being out what she has been for
the past week, so it's nice to see that he's doubtful.
Pat Connatan, who has been on the injury report for
a while, is questionable for Tomorrow night, and train Band

(31:39):
is probable, So it looks like one of the guards
could be back tonight. Tomorrow Night, Kyle is a take
on the Pistons.

Speaker 2 (31:46):
All right, we'll talk about it then right now we
hit a break, we come back, and it's the segment
that many of you have wondered about for a while.
We've rebranded the Friday five with Randy my Dad is
back with four picks and a big take to end
the week. Sports radiof Z one, Final Time, Sports Radio

(32:24):
ninety seven wf n ZKB and Smoke wrapping up what's
been a really fun week. Just a reminder we are
in on Monday on this show, and then I'm out
the rest of the week.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
For the Christmas holiday.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
I'll be back for the Seahawks game the following Sunday
and then in for Monday Tuesday of that week and
then out the rest of that week too for the
new year, so we'll hit the ground running at the
start of January. In and out over the next two weeks,
you'll get a steady dose of the Young Guns and
Willie p and some makeshift wfn Z lineups. But we'll
have coverage throughout the course of the next two weeks.

(32:54):
But the holidays have arrived, and I'll say it again
on Monday, but I hope everybody has a wonderful, safe
holiday season coming up over these next two weeks. But
right now is promise. We welcome back what became a
staple of the show for a long time, and I'm
glad it's back.

Speaker 3 (33:08):
Today.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
My dad is back with us on the hot line
to wrap up the week. We call it the Friday
five with Randy, and we might tweak the format a
little bit, but he's got four picks and a big
take from the world of sports, and I'm glad to
have him back.

Speaker 7 (33:20):
Dad.

Speaker 3 (33:20):
It's good to have you. What's going on? How are you?

Speaker 9 (33:23):
I'm good? How are you?

Speaker 3 (33:24):
I'm good? I'm good.

Speaker 2 (33:26):
So this is like riding the bike, but we're doing
things a little bit differently this week. I will say,
I don't know what your big topic of the week is.
And I might be messing it up by asking you this,
but I've had a few people already ask if since
you're coming back on, Like Ron the Plumber most recently said,
good evening, KB, isn't your daddy a NASCAR fan? What
was his take on Greg Biffel. So I don't know

(33:47):
if that's something you plan to talk about already, but
I would love to get your thoughts on that.

Speaker 7 (33:51):
Well.

Speaker 9 (33:52):
I didn't want to say too much about it because
it's a heartbreaking. I just I don't know. I don't
really want to get into it other than the fact
that he was a super super human being. I mean,
we need more people like him in this world and
what he was doing for the people in North Carolina,
people just shipping overlooked at, and hopefully he'll be remembered

(34:15):
for the good things he did in life.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
All Right, I like the way you put that. I
know it's you and I talked about it last night.

Speaker 2 (34:19):
It was a gut punch, all right, picks, let's start
with the first pick of the weekend.

Speaker 9 (34:24):
What you got all right tonight? I think we're gonna
see Oklahoma repeat and beat Alabama.

Speaker 7 (34:31):
Seventeen to sixteen.

Speaker 3 (34:34):
Who I like that score?

Speaker 2 (34:35):
That lines up perfectly smoked with what Chip just said
about the low score see seventeen. So what I think
the first what was the first score of this game
in the first matchup? Twenty three twenty one? If I'm
not mistaken, I think it was twenty three. So that's
right in the neighborhood. I just wonder if, like ty
Simpson's hurt, is he healthy enough? He's the best clean
pocket quarterback in college football.

Speaker 5 (34:57):
Venables just owns allib.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
That's the problem is that I'm not sure how many
clean pockets ty Simpson's going to get tonight because of
that Venables defense. It does help that they're getting Jim
Miller back, though, I just forgot dad, you said seventeen sixteen?

Speaker 3 (35:09):
Who's winning Oklahoma?

Speaker 2 (35:11):
Oklahoma? All right, it's not a bad pick, all right?
Pick number two? What you got?

Speaker 9 (35:16):
All right? I got the home team Texas A and
M beating Miami thirty one to twenty one.

Speaker 3 (35:21):
Ten. See, I like Miami in this game, but.

Speaker 9 (35:24):
You like to ask, uh, Like, I like Texas A
and m at home, and I think Miami's coach can
really screw this up. He tries hard.

Speaker 5 (35:32):
Enough, understandable.

Speaker 2 (35:35):
Yeah, I don't think too many people are going to
fight you on Mario Christobaul bombing in a big game scenario.
All right, A and M thirty one, Miami twenty one.
What's your third pick?

Speaker 9 (35:44):
All right, I've got Oregon beating JMU thirty four to
twenty three.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
All Right, Dukes cover then because they're twenty and a
half point underdog.

Speaker 3 (35:53):
So thirty four to twenty is that? Like?

Speaker 2 (35:56):
You think Oregon pulls away late? Is that a tight game?
I'm gonna watch it with you tomorrow, But you think
it's tight throughout? What does that one look like?

Speaker 9 (36:02):
I think JM you will give him a scare for
the first quarter.

Speaker 5 (36:06):
And a half early lead.

Speaker 9 (36:08):
Maybe m used a good football team.

Speaker 5 (36:11):
Oh, I agree with that. Barnett's a good good quarterback too.

Speaker 2 (36:14):
Yeah, I do wonder about you know what he looks
like against you know, that's a that's a big road environment. Eugene, Like,
how does Alonza Now? I was gonna say, Alonza, Carter, Alonza,
Taylor Barnett, thank you?

Speaker 3 (36:25):
This will it's lots of Yeah.

Speaker 9 (36:30):
Hey, these kids got nothing to lose.

Speaker 2 (36:32):
I hope they play like it. I'd love I listen.
I'd love to see it because of all, I'm not
even a group of five fans, but kind of feel
bad for how much heat the group of five is taken.
And I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of close games.
All right, fourth and final? Pick what you got?

Speaker 9 (36:45):
All right, dang close to where you live. I've got
the Panther Sunday beating Tampa Bay twenty three to sixteen.

Speaker 3 (36:51):
Let's got twenty three to sixteen. I like it.

Speaker 2 (36:55):
Holding Tampa to sixteen points would be pretty awesome. Twenty
three to see.

Speaker 9 (36:58):
I think they're going to I think they're going to
make Baker's life miserable.

Speaker 2 (37:01):
Sunday boy, I hope, so that'd be great. Twenty three
sixteen Panthers beat the Bucks on Sunday. All right, outside
of the A and M pick, I think we're I
think you're in really good shape.

Speaker 4 (37:12):
Right.

Speaker 3 (37:12):
What's your your big take of the week? What's your big, big,
big opinion?

Speaker 9 (37:16):
All right, we're going to kind of go back to
college football a little bit here, but concern to playoff.

Speaker 8 (37:21):
Now.

Speaker 9 (37:21):
Anybody that knows me and you, I mean everybody down
there knows that I'm a baseball guy, and as far
as I'm concerned, the World Series is the greatest sporting
event in the world.

Speaker 7 (37:32):
Now I know I'm in a minority.

Speaker 9 (37:34):
Of that, not just because the Dodgers won this year,
but the World Series to me is one of the
greatest things on Earth. But the best tournament on Earth
is the is March Madness. Hands down. There's nothing like
March Madness. And that leads me to what I'm trying
to get to. If you don't let the Furmans, the unbc's,

(37:55):
the Miamis of Ohio, if you don't let those guys
in March Madness tournament, I.

Speaker 7 (38:00):
Mean, why why even have it.

Speaker 9 (38:04):
That's the best part of the tournament is letting the
little guys play. So if you can't let the little
guys play in the college football playoffs, there's no point
in even.

Speaker 3 (38:14):
Having a playoff. Just rank them and just.

Speaker 9 (38:17):
Call them whoever's number one at the end of season,
call them national champion.

Speaker 3 (38:21):
I like it just an invitational. If you don't let
them play their.

Speaker 9 (38:24):
Way in yeah, I mean, you got to let these
guys play. And if you want to really do have it,
if you really want to make it fun, just have
a sixteen team playoff and put them all in the
same stadium in the same weekend and let them play
the first round on Saturday and Sunday.

Speaker 5 (38:43):
Oh say, I thought he was going to have all
the games on one weekend.

Speaker 9 (38:46):
Oh God, no, no, no, no.

Speaker 2 (38:49):
Listen, there are a lot of people who are going
to agree with you on that. I just don't think
people will say, well, the G five should have its
own tournament. I don't think anybody wants to watch that,
and I think the G five knows that. And if
we didn't have two teams in this year, they wouldn't
be this much griping about it. But we do, and
so we'll watch them tomorrow. All right, Dad, I think
this was a successful relaunch of the segment. I appreciate you,

(39:14):
and we'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 9 (39:16):
All right, I'll see you tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (39:17):
All right.

Speaker 2 (39:18):
There you go, Dad, with us the Friday Five with Randy,
four picks and a big opinion to wrap up the week.
Good stuff, all right, we go tipping our caps courtesy
of our friends at Neogenics, where they help heal joint
pain naturally with no surgery, no medication, no downtime. And
shout out to both my guy doctor Kuzma at the
Lake Norman location, but also to my buddy Nico Miles

(39:40):
of Neogenics. I don't want to spill the beans, but
I think things are going so well they might be expanding.
That's it's big news. It's because they're effective. It's because
they're good at what they do. Shout out to Neogenics,
smoke what you got.

Speaker 4 (39:52):
Well, Duke plays basketball tomorrow, but they've already won because
guess what.

Speaker 5 (39:55):
Darien Minsa the draft talk, it's over. He's staying at
Duke for one more year.

Speaker 4 (40:00):
Tip it to Captain Dary Minza, excited to see what
he can do in twenty twenty six.

Speaker 1 (40:04):
Love it.

Speaker 2 (40:04):
I'll tip my captain Dad. He was back and he
brought it and I appreciate it. We are off to
the weekend. Don't forget. Countdown to kickoff Sunday morning, ten
am sharp at the WFNZ Doghouse powered by Jack Daniels.
I implore you packed the bank on Sunday please. I
think this has a chance to be a really fun
and special Sunday. If you're on the fence, if you're
thinking about going, just stop thinking and do it.

Speaker 3 (40:26):
Hope to see you out there.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
At ten am Monday morning or Sunday morning for countdown
to kickoff at the WFNZ Doghouse, powered by Jack Daniels
for smoke.

Speaker 3 (40:33):
I'm KB. It's Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ.
