Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right now, we're talking about it with a guy who
knows this team inside and out. He's a Carolina Panthers legend,
color analyst on the Panthers Radio Network Hall of Honor
member and a good friend of the station and the show.
Jake DeLoone is back with us for a five o'clock
conversation here on a Tuesday. Jake, it's good to have you, brother.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
How you been I'm great man. How are you guys?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Well, we're fantastic, and I figured you would be too.
Five and four feels pretty good.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
You know.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
I make sure to tune in and I'm in the
press box for home games pretty much every Sunday. But
I've got you guys in the earbud and certainly when
I'm walking up and down the street, and I love
what you're doing. I can feel your enthusiasm for this
team when you're on the mic. I mean, just sitting
here at five and four. Maybe relative to where you
hoped this team would be back in training camp, how
do you feel about where they are as a football team?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Till very good about it.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
I remember in training camp, you know, get a ton
of interviews, and I thought we were Hey, I think
we're a seven win team, but can we all bounce our.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Way and let's get eight to nine.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
I just grow right continue group just so down after
the first two games, it's like, my gosh, like I
know we're better than this, and we just didn't get
to see and so like when we're doing I think
we've gone kind of up and then.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
We've gone down. Right. The thirty one point lost.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Of New England, twenty nine point lost to Buffalo those
two games.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Is kind of like we show something good and then
we go back down. But to go to answering.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Green Bay and that was going into the game when
you think about it, and I.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Always think about the big picture. The six I.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Played sixteen weeks. Right now, it's seventeen weeks, seventeen games.
That's a long season. Man, You're gonna have depths, you're
gonna have valleys. And we didn't play well no phase
of the offense. We struggled offensive legas Buffalo, our defense.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
We didn't play well, especially our run game and special teams.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
We were off, missing extra point just things like that.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
That's a flush game to me.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
And then Green Bay playing in Pittsburgh, Aaron Rodgers down
at half come back play fantastic in the second half
on the road, coming in late overlooking the Panthers.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Panthers have Philly. I mean they have Philly the next week.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
I said, this is a perfect game for us, and
I think we did right from the beginning, Tracy Smith
telling Fanala, pay we win the toss, hit the ball.
This win's gonna play tricky, and sure enough, that's all
they talked about. Then you saw the winds all game long,
and that's what it came down to. But we just
we played our ball and what I mean by that

(02:26):
we made it money for them, right. They didn't like
what we were doing stopping the run.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
You know, we're playing self defense. Yes, that's what this defense.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Is, just to make you drop field. It's just a
big It's very different than the Tony Dungee Tampa two, right,
and that was always Kenneck quarterback just kind.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Of not take the chance and just thinking dunks down
the field. Well, we're a team.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
The thing with the Dungee defense that were quick of
the field, so a big football team you could run
the football and have success. Well, we're big, especially with
ninety five up front, where a big foot ball team,
and we played well and then offensively, I don't think
we threw it the best. I think the weather might
have had something to.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Do with it.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
But Rico o'doo. We got a running back that's on
a heater right now and all the different combinations of online.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
We're running well and we're.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Calling the right plays, and Rico's powerful through the whole
and we're just a top of the football team. Unlike
Philly last year, where we had a chance to win
late in the game, well we came throwing. We won
on the road against the quality football team. This is
not a football team that's struggling. This is a football
team that's a good football team with a good roster.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Love it now. You were on with Mac and Bone
a couple of weeks ago and you shared the story
of Luke I Guess during a break, taking off his
headset and remarking to you about Dave Canalis's play calling right,
and I loved it, I mean, listeners, fans loved it.
And so you know, Buffalo, that stuff kind of goten
forgotten because that was an ugly game. But I think
we were reminded of that this week against Green Bay.

(03:55):
And to your point, Rico was awesome. Derek Brown was awesome,
offensive line good, Trayvon Merrick. Lots of guys played well.
But to me, and I'd love your thoughts on this
Sunday was to like, really about look at this coaching staff,
look at the preparation, look at the game plan. Like
to me, the MVP of Sunday was Dave Kanalis and
Zero Vero and Brad Idzick right behind him. How much

(04:16):
did the coaching staff in particular prove on Sunday?

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yeah, I think you give you when you give players
a chance to succeed. Players understand that and they know
that right, so that gives the coaches so much credibility.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Whereas Dave I.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Said it last year, I thought he won the locker room.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
When he Bingchbrice after Week two.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
When you do something like that, the number one overall
pick from the year prior, when you do something like
and then I think it just he did it again
this week. Hey, Rico's gonna start, and Rico's gonna play.
I mean, we all know what Tuba means to this
football team. It still does. But he had to make
a decision what's best for this team, and that's exactly

(04:56):
what he did. And that's something that I think it
wins over a team. And sure enough, I don't know
who came up with the idea of switching the green
dot from Rose Boon to Trevin Wallace.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
They seem like different football players.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Now that they've swapped the roles and s's who calls
to play. They're playing so fast and so and then
I go back to Tracy Smith, right, Tracy, Hey, let's
let's think about maybe taking the ball if we win
the toss due to the win. So when you give
you your players that opportunity to win, and players understand
that you can coach the heck out of them, you
can coach the heck.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Out of them, and you respect them, and they believe
in the game, playing weekend and week out.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
And when players believe in it, that's that's a that's
a powerful that's very powerful.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Dos Rico. Remind you of any of the backs that
you played with and and what I mean just in
your own words, what impact has he had on this
locker room?

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Oh that's a great question.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Oh man, maybe maybe the Shawn Foster type.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
DeShawn when he was healthy and he battled through so
many injuries, but he was he was fast, he was
kind of slashy, but he could run through tackles when
he was really really healthy.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
But Rico watching him play man, it's a the first
guy doesn't bring him down. I mean he goes through there,
he runs behind his path extremely well.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Jake Delone hanging out with us here on a Tuesday,
let's go back to the passing attack. You know Bryce
only I'm hearing yesterday. There's still some you know how
they are, there's still some haters out there. Well, you
know they won in spite of Bryce. He only threw
for one hundred and two yards. He had the interception
in the end zone. You know I'd counter that Jake
by saying, he just also pulled off his ninth game
winning drive of his career. Nine of his eleven wins

(06:32):
have featured game winning drives. He makes a lot of
big plays late, like how would you assess the way
that he in the passing game collectively played on Sunday?
Where is he playing well? And where can he get better?

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Well, look, I think we're working progress and that's okay.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
We're in year three, right, I mean, let's just look
at Daniel Jones, Sam Dno and Baker Mayfield. Hey, do
we want to truly rush a judgment right now? On
quarterbacks sometimes it takes a little time.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Listen.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
I thought Bryce one decision the other day.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
I didn't like the interception.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
I don't know if the ball slipped out of his hands,
the winds played a factor in it.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
I know that's not where he.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Was meant to throw the football. It just it looked
funny when he came off of his hands. But other
than that, I think where Bryce to me? And I
thought it was evident against Buffalo. So Andy gets hurt
or breaks the thumb, I think early in the game.
But when Andy got hit from behind and he fumbled
the football, that's not happening with Bryce. You're seeing him
step in the pocket, moving the pocket down the field,

(07:28):
and I stay down the field and make plays. He
made a couple of big first downs with his legs
the other day. That's kind of where I think we
need a lean into Bryce.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
And he's made some plays in the pocket. I have
to give him credit for that. He's made some plays.
But we're dealing with some young wide receivers still, Guys.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
I just I mean, McMillan's been great, and he'll tell
you I can be so much better.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
I think excel it's that's still a work in progress.
Now it's coming, Jimmy Horn.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
I mean like Cocher's just getting undrafted free agent, he's
just coming back.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
We're so young. Evans has been a fine for us.
I just think we're still a work in.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Progress that I'm not trying to put the answer a
hide behind the answer, like, yeah, we're not gonna throw it.
I don't think we're gonna throw it for three hundred
yards every week. That's not who we want to be,
and I don't think that's what we need to be
right now. I think we need to be a running
football team that can convert third downs and kind of
stay on the field, and then we've got to convert
in the red zone. But we do know that our

(08:25):
young quarterbacks, when it's a big moment in the game,
late in the game, third or fourth down, whatever it
may be, he kind of his pull schools down a
little bit. That's one thing you have to admit. He's
not afraid to make a big third or fourth down play.
Go back to the Jimmy Horn his first game ever,
throwing the corner out to complete it on the fourth.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Down to enable us to go win the game a
few weeks back, like the kid does a good job
in fush time. I think we're still a work in progress.
And that's okay, that's okay.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
I'm with you now. You also just touched on something
that I think takes us back to about an hour
and ten minutes ago. NFL trade deadline passes, Panthers don't
do anything, and you just said it. This is a
young team. There are a lot of first and second year,
even third year guys contributing, and in the two years
preceding this season, I think we all came to the
very real realization that this roster just didn't have nearly

(09:12):
enough talent. I mean, it was obvious, and so Dan's
been stacking it and I was completely fine with them
standing pat at the deadline. They've done what they've done
with young contributors, the guys who have been here. They're
not looking to be a super Bowl contender in twenty
twenty five. I think they're more looking toward next year.
Were you hoping they'd do anything of the trade deadline
or are you happy that they stood pat?

Speaker 3 (09:32):
I would have been surprised had we done anything, but.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
I think we would have been the recipient of.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Okay, we're a team that's in a dumpster far we
just want to get rid of And Okay, so where
we're going to get somebody that had a connection to
Canalis somewhere in Seattle that somebody might have been there,
or somebody with the rams that EJ had, like our
Dan was with somebody. I thought maybe one of those
but would come up. But a lot of a lot

(10:02):
of it to me is.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Like, but why we're playing these young guys. Yes, we
might have to live with a couple of errors here
or there.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
But watching Nick Gordon play, it's unfortunate Princeley has a
little ankle right now.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
But watching these young.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
Guys play, like, that's what I want to see. I
want to see more of these young guys plays, and no,
can we go?

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Can we move forward with them? Right? That's kind of
I think I would have been surprised. Have we made
him like a splash move?

Speaker 1 (10:29):
What I gotta ask about the defense? Two quick things,
We'll get you out of here. You know, you and
I talked before the season and we acknowledged that Dan
Morgan had come out and said we're keeping as zero evro.
It's my job to get in better players. Clearly Dan
did that and they got Derek Brown back, which we
all knew was a really big deal, But even that
feels like it was a little bit underestimated because that
guy looks like the best defensive tackle in football through

(10:52):
nine weeks. Just your thoughts on this defensive turnaround and
in particular what Derek Brown means to that room.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
File one hundred and three solo tackles as a defensive
lineman in twenty twenty three ull time NFL records Like
the guy.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
We said it last year, probably on this show. If
he would have been a free agent, the number one
free agent right.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Could have been a draft pick where he was number
six last year's draft, he would have been the top
two or three.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Like, this guy is a difference maker. I think we're
starting to see Turk Wharton come around a little bit.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
He battled a couple of injuries and he's finally starting
to kind of come around with what you know.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
I'm disappointed in the Pat Jones.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
I thought Pat Jones was a guy that I thought
we kind of stole him in free agency. He lines
up an outside linebacker, he lined over the three technique
was against Miami to get the final stack of pressure
on two.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
If my memory serves correct, that's like I like some
of the guys that we have in that regard.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
But defensively, I think Dan knew, Hey, I had to
fix so on line two years ago. Now we have
to fix the D line. And that's how you went
consistently in this league.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
You can never have enough Look what's going on our
offensive line. You can never have enough guys.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
And you've got to continue to stack that because that's
gonna give you a chance to be in every game.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
And kind of like what we've done. And I like
that they believe that some of the young guys were playing.
And what game was it?

Speaker 3 (12:14):
Was it after Arizona when Canallis came out and said, yeah,
we just we got to start playing some younger guys.
I think it was Arizona, Like yeah, and you're starting
to see that happen.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Youth is a youth's powerful man.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Youth speak, quickness is very very powerful in this league.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
It is all right, last thing in New Orleans this week,
you know them, well, we all pay attention to what
the Saints are doing. And you know, I've certainly been
doing this long enough to know that you don't take
any game for granted in the NFL, certainly not with
a team that's young and still on the come up.
But the truth is New Orleans is a bad football team,
and Carolina is favored for the first time this season.
And I'm curious what you think Sunday will look like,

(12:51):
both in terms of the matchup, but the game plan.
It's a home game. I mean, the crowd's going to
be at Carolina's back. I mean six and four would
be massive. What are you anticipating, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Massive, But I mean, listen, it's a division game. And
I've always said this, you never take a division game
for granted.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
One thing I.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
Think, and watching the film yesterday of the Rams Saints game,
I came away with saying, you know, it doesn't feel
like when I'm prepared.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
When we were preparing to play.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
The Jets, I just felt we were better than the
Jets and we were going to beat the Jets. I
thought offensively, they couldn't do anything, and I just felt,
we just get a lead and let's just play keep away, right,
That's kind of what I felt. I don't feel that
with the Saints team. The Saints team is not that
bad of a football team. I'd be very honest. I
think defensively they have some pieces. They traded away two

(13:40):
starters on offense today and Trevor Pinning the left goard,
and they also traded away Shaheed.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
So I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
I'm not sure what that does for a young quarterback
and Tyler shut but I thought they've handled him correctly.
He went through camp and he sat for the first
couple of months of the season to really and truly
kind of getting his mind what's going on.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
I thought the kid played okay the other day. I
don't look at this as kind of a walk pushover game.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
This is a it's still a division game. I don't
think this team is that bad, especially on defense. They've
got some pieces on defense they really and truly do.
We just have to make sure we can continue to
establish our run and our defense needs to show up.
Make this team one dimension or don't let them get
started in the run game. And I'm hopeful that's the
case because they're going to be replacing two starting offensive linemen.

(14:27):
In Pluaga, the first round pick last year, he's out
with the high Angel spring. They're starting right tackle in
the left guard pinning.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
So you know this is a.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Don't look ahead to six and four. You got to
go earn it throughout the course of the week and
then make it happen on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
Jake, always enjoyable brother. Thank you for the time. We'll
see you up there on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
Okay, Thank you Kyle, thank you man.
