Speaker 1 (00:00):
We had an angry listener that I talked about last
week who said that I and my colleagues here at
wfn Z would continue lying to the audience about the
Panther's ability to compete in the National Football League, that
we were liars, and that we should be more like
Joe Ovius, who does not lie to his audience.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
So we have the honest and.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Truthful Joe Ovius back with us for a Tuesday conversation.
What's up, Joe, how are you?
Speaker 3 (00:24):
You know I'm gonna be honest with you. I'm gonna
be honest with you guys.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
When I saw meow Mix was going to start podcasting again,
I was gonna put all my money on New Orleans
this weekend. But you know what, shame works, Kyle, Yes,
it does. Shame still works. And those guys thought the
stunt would work, it didn't, and we got Icky Aquanta
with others telling you, uh uh, you sit your asses down.
(00:50):
It made my heart swell a little bit. I was
proud to see everybody's shame of podcast back into not talking.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
I'm right there with you.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
I loved it, and they made the right call ultimately,
even if they were shamed into it. Has the Panthers
love and that swelling of the collective Panther Nation heart
reached its way out to the triangle.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
How are the folks feeling out there?
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah, it's interesting.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
It's been somewhat conflicted in how people feel about the Panthers,
and I say shame works. I think there was an
element of not really trusting Dave Canalis when he was
insisting on.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
A running back rotation.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
I think what the green Bay game proved to you
is that you can't trust anybody in the NFL, and
all you can really ask of your coaching staff is
to put your team in the best position to win.
I think that's what made people angry about the Buffalo game.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Andy Dalton the side.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
I think they got the sense that Dave Canals was
not putting this team in the best position to win.
That was clearly the case on Sunday against Green Bay,
and I think he won some people over and how
he went, I find we're gonna go a Rico you
n if he's hurt, We're going to.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Still ride him. And it paid off for him.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
They thought well enough ahead to think about how's the
win going to affect a potential game winning field?
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Goal and obviously Bryce.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
Young not getting in the way again, and that's also
coaching too when he's not one hundred percent. So I
think everybody's ultimately impressed and we'll see how the rest.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Of the season goes.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Yeah, I agree with most of what you said right there.
Sunday to me was about Dave Canalis and a zero
evro and the game plan. Like Greg Olsen did such
a great job of breaking it down. You know, we
had people. Of course, Joe yesterday said well Bryce only
threw for one hundred and two yards. Well, I'm not
going to tell you that was the exact game plan,
but overall that was kind of the game plan. You're
in a windy, cold environment, he's not one hundred percent.
You want to limit possessions. You want to run the football.
(02:27):
Like the week prior, we saw Josh Allen come into
the stadium, James Cook went off, Josh had twelve completions
for one hundred and sixty three yards. Josh Allen was
not the reason they won. And I think we're being reminded,
you've been around for a long time that running the
football and playing defense is still a major key to
victory in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
Yeah, it's kind of like what Dave Dorn was able
to do against Georgia Tech. Huh, Georgia Tech can't stop people.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
All right, let's see who.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Get this thing going, And that's exactly what they did,
and they came away with a wing because all you're
asking in that situation is your own defense to do enough,
which has been something that Nite State's been having problems
with it. But they had a perfect game plan against
Georgia Tech. They executed it to a t and they
got a big win on Saturday. It's been an interesting weekend, man,
there is so much stuff going on and so much
positive to talk about as it relates to football.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
I almost don't know what to do with my answer.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
I'm with you. I was like marveling at it yesterday.
This was one of the great weekends that I've had
in sports in a very long time, and a lot
of folks had a similar experience. Just hey, real quick,
last thing on the Panthers will move on. Nothing done
before the deadlines today at four o'clock. I want them
to make a run to the playoffs. I think that
should always be the goal. But I also think this
is the year before the year and I didn't need
(03:34):
them to do something splashy by four pm today?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
What did you think about that?
Speaker 4 (03:38):
Did none of you learn the lessons of falling for
the Scott Fitter? Laser eyes means you know in every deal,
what did going in on every deal do for you
exactly other than gut your assets that you're still kind
of paying for right now. So hey, guys, enjoy being
(03:59):
above five hundred. Get a true assessment of where you're
at work on it this upcoming offseason, and they will really.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Get a sense of what this team is about.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Sometimes things take a little bit of time. I understand
we don't want that, and it's been a long time
for the Panthers and you want you want.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
It so badly. I get it.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
But let's let's stick with this a little bit and
not give up more assets when we've been complaining about
now having assets in the first place.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
That's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Joe Ovius Ovius and Julie oh Podcast hanging out with
us here on a Tuesday. So uh, Dave dorn Man,
I'm not plugged in like you and Julie o R.
So I'll lean on you. But I've covered this league
for a long time I respect Dave. I've had a
lot of good conversations with Dave over the years, as
you have, probably more than even I have. I like
the guy, I respect him, and there's all these rumors
about him retiring that have been going on throughout the
(04:48):
course of the year. Then we get to last week's
press conference and he says he's not thinking about that,
and maybe that's some subterfuge and you know, sleight of
hand or something along those lines. That's what Chip Patterson
told us he thinks it is. Then they go upset
Georgia Tech, which I I didn't think would happen, not
missing as much as they were missing on Saturday. What's
going on with NC State football? What do you think
is happening both now and a couple of months from now.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
I mean, I think it's as far as it relates
to the retirement talk, I think that requires some context.
My partner, Joe Gillio, if he was still in the
newspaper days, he would tell you that this would be
a report, not conjecture, that he would report that Dave
Dorn had to be talked out of retiring this past offseason. Now,
how does that inform what this upcoming off season will
(05:31):
look like who is to say, but.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Chilio can tell you definitively.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Yeah, those conversations were had, and what he said in
his press availability last week ahead of the Georgia Tech
game and he was asked about retirement stuff didn't really
tell me anything. He's like, I got four years left.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Cool.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
It might not be up to you if you're going
to be at MC state, So I just.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Wanted to put that on the table.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
I do think though, that the Georgia Tech win brings
out the conflicted feelings about Dave Dorn's tenure at EMC
State in that you're telling me that your two biggest
wins this year against top twenty five teams Georgia Tech
and Virginia awesome, but you also have an embarrassing loss
to an interim coach against Virginia Tech at Halton. You
(06:13):
also have a game in which he kind of knows
showed against Pitt. Explain that, right. But Dave's going to
have an opportunity to have a very Dave Doran year
the rest of the way, with winnable games against Miami
and Florida State.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
We know they'll be up for that.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
North Carolina game against Bill Belichick and they can get
to a bowl after that. I think there's going to
be a conversation between Book Oregan and Dave Dorn about
the future of this program and the direction of it.
And I'll say this to kind of wrap my point
at Nancy State. What's going out in NC State with
Dave Dorn is a conversation that's going to take place
at around ninety nine percent of all college football programs,
including your own blood Virginia Tech. What are reasonable expectations?
Speaker 3 (06:52):
What do we want?
Speaker 4 (06:53):
There's not as much money as you think, so I
do think there's a recalibration of expectations and what exactly do.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
You want out of football?
Speaker 4 (07:01):
That have to happen at a lot of places, including
against the State.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
I like that answer. Carolina. They beat Syracuse Friday night.
We all know Syracuse is bad. That quarterback was horrendous,
but it's a win. They've been close to two weeks prior.
Does Bill Belichick finally have this thing moving in a
positive direction?
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Why are we doing this?
Speaker 2 (07:19):
I don't know why we tell me because you're out there.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
I'm not I find it interesting that we treat North
Carolina with kid gloves and Bill Belichick. We keep moving
the goalposts on what Bill Belichick and North Carolina's about.
I mean, I'll get comments from listeners saying, I mean,
look at Alabama's first season, Look at Nick Daban's record
at Alabama his first season. As if Nick David and
Alabama and Bill Belichick and North Carolina the same thing. Yeah,
I agree, or the worst one, well, you know they
(07:44):
should be five and three. I mean, look at Dion's
first year at Colorado, as if North Carolina and Colorado
were in the same situations, as if Deon Sanders took
that job as a surefire, multi super Bowl winning coach
that was going to turn this thing around. The Deon
Sanders high was an experiment for a program that had
been irrelevant for decades. North Carolina has been good, okay,
(08:09):
and Mack Brown did not leave that program decimated, for
Heaven's sake. So the amount of goalposts moving for North
Carolina has been interesting to me because this is not
what you signed up for. As one of our listeners
pointed out, these have been some really expensive moral victories
for North Carolina and Bill Belichick. But as always in
(08:29):
the Triangle, every football season comes down to a trio
of games, and that's what we're set up for for
North Carolina. Bill Belichick's year will be decided on how
he does against Wake Forest, against Manny Diaz and Duke
who are in the ACC title hunt, and NC State.
That is what it had ultimately come down to. And
if they lose those games, if they get embarrassed in
(08:51):
those games, those are the three games that are ultimately
going to matter and that will ultimately decide how we
view North Carolina season. Even I will come off my
position if they come out of those games with wins,
if they beat Duke and North n NC State on
the way out, and man tip of the caps for
Bill Belichick. You did get this thing turned around and
we'll see where it goes into the following season. I
(09:11):
don't expect it to happen, but that's where we're at.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
I wanted to pivot to something else because this is
in your wheelhouse YouTube, TV and ESPN.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
It's ugly this week. I mean it.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
They tried to ruin my weekend, that's for sure. I've
been a faithful subscriber for years. I finally abandoned ship
on Friday. I'm over it.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
But what's your take on why this is happening.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
Who's most responsible for this and who's really pulling the
most important levers behind the scenes.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Well, the most responsible party for this are your favorite
sports weeks. The price of the brick for the NFL
must go up. Team valuations must go up, the Hornets,
the valuation must go up, and eventually that cost gets
passed down to you, these sports viewer. So if the
NFL wants to have record breaking TV deals, gets who
(09:59):
pays for it? Well, yeah, broadcaster pays for it, but
who do they get passed down to us? So as
ESPN Disney continues to pay top dollar for the NFL
and other sports properties, well they're expecting more out of
their broadcasters. I'm not positioning this to take sympathy for ESPN.
I'm just simply giving you the cold, hard business truth.
The leagues want more money, ESPN Disney has to pay
(10:21):
up for it, and they have to recoup it some way, somehow,
and that fits into a carriage dispute. I will say this,
though I have very This topic doesn't move me the
same way a carriage dispute would have moved me ten
years ago. And you actually just illustrated the reason Why
How easy was it, Kyle for you to change your plan?
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Very easy, very simple.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Ten years ago, I'd.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Have to get on the phone with a telecom company
and I'd have to go through the phone tree of
hell and then get like, oh, well, you know, if
you stick with us for one more year for fifty
bucks less, how does that work?
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Or if you stick to your guns? Well, no, I
want to get a new deal. Well, you got to canceled,
then you got to send the equipment back. Then you
got to call the other people, and then they got
to set up a guy that might show up between
six am and nine pm. Right, so the hassle as a.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Consumer is no longer there. So you're not.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Happy with this carriage dispute between ESPN and Google.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (11:18):
You know what you could do? Take advantage of any
number of deals that are out there. Your phone carrier
probably gives you ESPN for free and you don't even
know it, you.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Know what I mean. Disney Plus has got a really
good deal right now.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
It's really easy to change. And I think where this
all goes. I don't know if ESPN's ever back.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
On YouTube TV. I wonder that they already have all
their distribution. Why wouldn't you go back to YouTube? Well,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
I jumped to Fubo because it's got everything I need.
My wife informed me last night that Disney owns eighty
percent of Fubo.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
I had no idea.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
Huhy, just like I'm a Hulu subscriber.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
I didn't have any issues.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
So you see what I'm getting at. Yeah, So there
are so there are options out there for you. And
if you prefer the YouTube interface, you know what, give
it a weekend. You'll get used to the Internet the
other interface. Like, we're very, very spoiled in an era
where it's very frictionless to move on to something else.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
I'm not trying to be cavalier about it.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
I'm just simply saying, guys, we got it a hell
of a lot easier now to switch than it was
ten years.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
It's a great point. It's a great point.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
So why I asked you, buddy, I appreciate the time,
Thank you for always joining us, and have a great week.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Take it easy.
